JUST LEAVING HOME TO GO LOOK AT SOME PARTS FOR A POLE BARN AND LEFT DRIVEWAY WENT TO STOP SIGH , I PROCEEDING TO GO DOWN MITCHELL HILL RD AND ON THE SECOND TURN NO BRAKES , LUCKILY I HAVE SOME EXPERIENCE IN THIS AREA AND INSTANTLY APPLIED MY EMERGENCY BRAKE AND PUT TRUCK INTO LOWER GEAR . THIS WAS ENOUGH TO SLOW ME DOWN SO I DIDN'T GO OVER THE GUARD RAIL BUT DID HIT IT ROUGHLY . I MADE IT TO THE BOTTOM AND COASTED TO A STOP . GOT OUT AND LOOKED UNDER HOOD AND TRUCK TO FIND BRAKE FLUID WAS POURING ON TO THE GROUND. I HAD IT TOWED HOME . UPON FURTHER INSPECTION I LOCATED THE CAUSE OF BRAKE FAILURE WAS DUE TO BRAKE LINES BROKE DUE TO HEAVY RUST ALL OVER THEM .. NOW I DO A LITTLE RESEARCH ONLINE FOR REPLACEMENT PARTS AND FIND OUT THAT THIS IS A SERIOUS ISSUE WITH MANY OWNERS OF CHEVROLET SILVERADO'S . WHY HASN'T THEIR BEEN A RECALL . WHY IS BECAUSE OF THE AMOUNT OF MONEY INVOLVED AND GM DOESN'T WANT TO PAY . SO SOMEONE ELSE WILL BE PAID , BUT NOT THE OWNERS . OR A FATALITY WILL HAVE TO OCCUR FOR SOMEONE TO MAKE A DECISION . THAT'S THE WORLD WE LIVE IN NOW ! SAD BUT TRUE . *TR
ON 09/18/2014 WHILE DRIVING IN MY DRIVEWAY I APPLIED THE BRAKES AND THE PEDDLE WENT NEARLY TO THE FLOOR. I WAS ONLY GOING 5-10 MPH AND WAS ABLE TO STOP WITHOUT HITTING ANYTHING. I LOOKED UNDER THE VEHICLE AND OBSERVED A TRAIL OF FLUID AND A PUDDLE OF FLUID UNDER THE VEHICLE AT THE LEADING EDGE OF THE DRIVES DOOR. INSPECTION REVEALED THE BRAKE LINES WERE RUSTED THROUGH. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 2500. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS APPLIED AND THE VEHICLE FAILED TO STOP. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE BRAKE LINES NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THE HOOD LATCH WAS RUSTING AND THE VEHICLE WAS LEAKING DIESEL FUEL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 123,173.
THE INSTRUMENT PANEL GAUGES FAIL AS WELL AS THE SPEEDOMETER. *TR
I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AND MY BRAKES WENT OUT AND ALMOST REAR ENDED THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME. I PULLED OVER AND NOTICED SOMETHING LEAKING FROM MY VEHICLE. I HAD THE VEHICLE INSPECTED AND MECHANIC SAID ALL BRAKE LINES WERE CORRODED AND THAT THEY THOUGHT THAT SEEMED ODD WITH THIS YEAR OF VEHICLE. *TR
BRAKE LINES ARE RUSTED OUT. I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY, COMING TO A STOP LIGHT AND THE LINE LET GO AS I APPLIED THE BRAKES. *TR
LOST BRAKE FLUID, BRAKE LINE UNDER DRIVERS SIDE BLEW OUT LOST ALL BRAKES. WAS ABLE TO STOP USING EMERGENCY BRAKE OR IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A CRASH INTO MY GARAGE! BRAKE LINES ARE ALL RUSTED VERY BADLY. THIS IS A SPARE VEHICLE AND IS USUALLY ONLY USED IN THE SUMMER OR FOR QUICK TRIPS TO TOWN. ALL BRAKE LINES ARE SUSPECT IN MANY PLACES. *TR
WHEN MY TRUCK IS STARTED FOR THE FIRST TIME IN A DAY THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER WILL BE FULLY OPERATIONAL. IF THE TRUCK IS SHUT OFF AND RESTARTED THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FAILS TO COME ON, NO MATTER HOW MANY TIMES I START AND STOP THE TRUCK. IF THE TRUCK SITS OVERNIGHT AND IS RESTARTED THE CLUSTER FUNCTIONS NORMALLY UNTIL THE TRUCK IS TURNED OFF AND RESTARTED, AT WHICH TIME THE CLUSTER FAILS TO COME ON. ALL GAUGES, TACHOMETER, SPEEDOMETER, BATTERY, ENGINE TEMPERATURE, OIL PRESSURE ODOMETER, FUEL GAUGE AND ODOMETER FAIL TO OPERATE AT ALL. ON THE RARE OCCASION WHILE DRIVING THE TRUCK WITH A NON FUNCTIONAL INSTRUMENT CLUSTER THE CLUSTER WILL SUDDENLY TURN ON. IF I TURN THE TRUCK OFF AND RESTART IT THE CLUSTER FAILS TO COME ONLINE. SEVERAL YEARS AGO I HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE SPEEDOMETER NOT WORKING CORRECTLY AND THE CHEVY DEALERSHIP WAS SUPPOSED TO HAVE REPLACED THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER. NOW THIS PROBLEM IS OCCURRING. EVEN THOUGH THE TRUCK RUNS WITHOUT THE CLUSTER COMING ON I CANNOT DETERMINE NECESSARY INFORMATION TO SAFELY OPERATE MY VEHICLE. AND, AS THE MILEAGE IS STORED IN THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER, IT IS PROBABLY NOT REGISTERING MILEAGE WHEN IT IS NON-FUNCTIONAL. *TR
BRAKE LINES WENT OUT WITH NO WARNING - NO LIGHT SHOWING COMPRESSION OR FLUID LEAKING. STILL NO LIGHTS HAVE COME ON. IF WE HAD BEEN GOING FASTER, WE COULD HAVE HIT SOMETHING. LUCKILY MY HUSBAND WAS DRIVING AND HE KNEW HOW TO REACT BY DOWN SHIFTING TO SAVE US. THE BRAKE LINES ARE ALL RUSTED. THE TRUCK ONLY HAS 80,000 MILES ON IT AND HAS BEEN WELL TAKEN CARE OF. WE FEEL THAT GM USED CHEAP METAL FOR THESE LINES AND COULD HAVE COMPROMISED OUR LIVES. *TR
WHILE USING THE TRUCK TO REMOVE A ROOT BALL WE NOTICED THAT THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS GOING TO THE FLOOR. NO BRAKE OR WARNING LIGHTS WERE SHOWING ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. OUR MECHANIC REPLACED FOUR BRAKE LINES DUE TO RUST, CORROSION AND LEAKS. WE ARE EXTREMELY THANKFUL THIS HAPPENED WHILE WORKING IN THE BACK YARD AND NOT WHEN TRAVELING DOWN THE INTERSTATE TOWING OUR 3000 POUND BOAT! AFTER SEEING ALL THE REPORTED PROBLEMS ON THE INTERNET I CANNOT UNDERSTAND WHY THERE HAS NEVER BEEN A RECALL BY GENERAL MOTORS. *TR
ALL SIX BRAKE LINES ROTTED AWAY, LOST 2 LINES WHILE DRIVING HOME AT NIGHT, NO WARNING, THANK GOD I WAS CLOSE TO HOME, 2 FRONT CALIPERS ROTTED SO BAD, I COULD NOT BLEED THE LINES... ALL THIS AFTER THE HEADS LEAKED ANTIFREEZE INTO THE OIL AT 40,000 MILES. I WAS TOLD CHEVY NEW ABOUT THE DEFECTIVE HEADS, BUT DID NOTHING ABOUT IT. INSTRUMENT CLUSTER BULBS BLEW, GAS GAUGE CLUSTER FAILED, PASSENGER DOOR WILL NOT UNLOCK WHEN SHIFTED BACK INTO PARK. SERIOUS FRAME RUST SHOWING.....AND THE HITS JUST KEEP ON COMING!!!!!! *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED, IT TRAVELED ABNORMALLY TO THE FLOORBOARD. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, WHO INFORMED THAT THE BRAKE LINE FRACTURED DUE TO RUST CORROSION CAUSING THE BRAKE FLUID TO LEAK. THE MECHANIC DECLARED THE VEHICLE UNSAFE TO DRIVE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 30,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 CHEVROLET SILVERADO. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH, THE BRAKES FAILED AND THE BRAKE PEDAL TRAVELED TO THE FLOORBOARD. THE CONTACT OBSERVED BRAKE FLUID LEAKING ONTO THE GROUND. THE CONTACT REPLACED THE REAR BRAKE LINE AND NOTICED THAT THE FRONT BRAKE LINE ALSO FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 139,000.
THE ABS BRAKES ON MY 4WD 1500 FAILED, WITHOUT ANY WARNING, THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. FORTUNATELY, I WAS ON A 4 LANE UNDIVIDED ROAD WITH LIGHT TRAFFIC AND WAS ABLE TO GET TO THE SHOULDER, PLAY CONTORTIONIST AND APPLY THE EMERGENCY BRAKE TO STOP.UPON INSPECTION I FOUND BRAKE FLUID LEAKING BELOW THE DRIVER DOOR. THE RECOVERY VEHICLE OPERATOR TOLD ME I WAS HIS 3RD TRUCK TOWED THIS YEAR FOR THE SAME PROBLEM. I WONDER HOW MANY BRAKES LINES HAVE FAILED AND HAVE NOT BEEN REPORTED. WITH ALL THE NEWS ABOUT GM RECALLS THIS YEAR, I WONDER IF THIS AN ITEM I SHOULD BRING TO MEDIA ATTENTION? HAVING NO BRAKES IS DEFINITELY NOT SAFE. *TR
WHILE DRIVING DOWN BUSY ROAD, FOR NO REASON ENGINE POWER WAS SUDDENLY REDUCED WHICH COULD HAVE RESULTED IN A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. THIS HAS HAPPENED NUMEROUS TIMES. CALLED GM. NO RECALLS. THIS APPEARS TO BE AN INHERENT PROBLEM, NOT WEAR AND TEAR. THIS NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED ASAP. *TR
YES,I WAS BUYING A NEW TRAILER WHEN I WAS GOING TO STOP AT AN INTERSECTION,THE BRAKE PEDAL, WENT TO FLOOR,LUCKILY USING TRAILER BRAKES,I WAS ABLE TO GET IT STOP,NOTICE LINE BROKE DUE TO RUST,I REPLACED ALL BRAKE LINES WITH STAINLESS STEEL FROM A COMPANY WHO PRE-BEND NEW PIECES THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN INSTALLED IN THIS TRUCK,DUE TO COST,NOW FUEL LINE LEAKING CAUSING BRAKING DOWN ON SIDE OF HIGHWAY,UNTIL AAA CAME BUT HAD TRAILER ON THAT MADE THE SITUATION HARDER,SO AFTER INCONVENIENCE,HAVE TO PUT NEW STAINLESS STEEL FUEL LINES.THANKS FOR THE TIME TO READ[XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR
I WAS TRAVELING ALONG AT 45 MPH., AND GENTLY APPLIED BRAKES AS I WAS NEARING AN INTERSECTION. THE BRAKE PEDAL SUDDENLY WENT TO THE FLOOR, AND I HAD NO BRAKES. LUCKILY I THOUGHT QUICK ENOUGH TO STEP DOWN ON THE PARKING BRAKE, OR THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN A MAJOR WRECK. TURNS OUT THAT A STEEL BRAKE LINE BURST THAT RUNS ALONG THE FRAME IN BEHIND THE FUEL TANK. HAS THERE BEEN ANY RECALLS ON THIS PROBLEM? SEEMS LIKE THEY SHOULD HAVE BEEN MADE OUT OF STAINLESS STEEL SO THEY DON'T RUST. THANK GOD MY 16 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER WASN'T DRIVING WHEN IT HAPPENED! *TR
JUST LEFT HOME AND WAS DRIVING ABOUT 1/2 MILE FROM HOME. CAME TO A TRAFFIC LIGHT AND WENT TO BRAKE FOR A RED LIGHT. THE TRUCK STARTED TO BRAKE AND THEN MY FOOT WENT DOWN TO THE FLOOR WHILE PRESSING THE BRAKE. MY PICKUP DID NOT STOP AND HAD TO GO THROUGH THE RED LIGHT. LUCKILY, I WAS ABLE TO HONK AND WARN THE OTHER CARS GOING THROUGH THE INTERSECTION, THAT I COULDN'T STOP. I HAD TO DOWNSHIFT AND USE THE EMERGENCY BRAKE TO STOP AND PULL OVER. I FOUND THAT THE BRAKES RUPTURED IN TWO DIFFERENT SPOTS. BOTH FRONT AND BACK BRAKE LINES RUPTURED AT THE SAME TIME. *TR
GOING OUT OF DRIVE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO FLOOR. LATER TURNED OUT TO BE A BRAKE LINE RUPTURED FROM BEING CORRODED. TRUCK ROLLED BACKWARDS AND STRUCK A TREE CAUSING MINOR DAMAGE TO THE BUMPER. NOT REPORTED TO INSURANCE BECAUSE DEDUCTIBLE HIGHER THAN DAMAGE. THIS FAILURE OF THE BREAK LINE HAPPENED ONCE BEFORE IN 10/2009. LUCKILY NO INJURIES BUT THE NUMBER OF THESE INCIDENTS POINT TO A HAZARDOUS FLAW THAT GM SHOULD ADDRESS. *TR
WHILE DRIVING TO WORK I PRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL AND IT WENT RIGHT TO THE FLOOR. I QUICKLY PULLING INTO A DRIVEWAY AND SLAMMED ON THE EMERGENCY BRAKE BECAUSE I HAD ZERO BRAKING FROM THE PEDAL. I LOOKED UNDERNEATH THE TRUCK AND SAW A RUSTED BRAKE LINE DRIPPING FLUID. IF I WAS ON THE EXPRESSWAY I WOULD HAVE SERIOUSLY HURT SOMEONE BECAUSE I LOST ALL BRAKING FUNCTION. *TR
WHILE DRIVING AND APPROACHING A READ LIGHT, I DEPRESSED MY BRAKES AND THE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR CAUSING ME NOT TO STOP AND RUNNING A READ LIGHT. I WAS FORTUNATE NOT TO HAVE HIT OR BE HIT BY ANOTHER CAR. I MANAGED TO PULL TO THE SIDE AND LATER WHEN THE TRUCK WAS IN THE SHOP I CAME TO FIND OUT THAT MY BREAK LINES RUSTED THROUGH NEARLY CAUSING A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. THIS KIND OF DEFECT IS COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE. I WAS FORTUNATE NOT TO HAVE BEEN KILLED. WHAT MORE CAN I SAY? *TR
I WAS LEAVING MY PARENTS HOUSE SUNDAY NIGHT AUGUST 24, 2014 AND WHEN I APPLIED THE BRAKES FOR THE STOP SIGN MY BRAKE PEDAL WENT CLEAN TO THE FLOOR BEFORE I FELT ANY BRAKING ACTION. MY BRAKE LIGHT/ALARM WENT OFF INSIDE THE CAB OF MY TRUCK AT THIS TIME SAYING I NEED TO SERVICE MY BRAKES. THANK GOODNESS IT WAS LATE AT NIGHT AND THEY WASN'T ANY TRAFFIC. AFTER INSPECTING THE BRAKE LINES, THE REAR STEEL BRAKE LINE BURST ON THE DRIVE SIDE AND SPEWED ALL OF MY REAR BRAKE FLUID ONTO THE PAVEMENT. *TR
I WAS TRAVELING EAST ON A ROADWAY IN THE TOWNSHIP WHERE I LIVE, AT APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH. WHEN I WENT TO APPLY MY BRAKES ON MY 2003 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500 PICK-UP TRUCK AND THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR AND " I HAD NO BRAKES!" I NEARLY CRASHED INTO ANOTHER VEHICLE THAT WAS TRAVELING THRU THE INTERSECTION. I WAS NEAR MY HOME AND WAS ABLE TO TRAVEL SLOWLY HOME AND DISCOVERED THAT THE DRIVER'S SIDE BRAKE LINE, NEAR THE REAR (BED AREA) OF THE TRUCK HAD EXPLODED DUE TO A HIGH VOLUME OF RUST IN WHICH I DISCOVERED THAT ENTIRE BRAKE LINE WAS COMPLETELY RUSTED. BRAKE FLUID HAD SPEWED EVERYWHERE. I FEEL THAT THIS DEFINITELY IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE AND THAT PEOPLE COULD BE INJURED OR KILLED DUE TO THE ISSUE. I HAVE BEEN DOING SOME RESEARCH AND HAVE LEARNED THAT THIS IS BECOMING A HUGE ISSUE WITH GM TRUCKS AND LIGHT DUTY TRUCKS. THIS SHOULD NOT BE A "NORMAL WEAR ISSUE" FOR A 2003 MODEL. *TR
BRAKE LINES RUSTED SEVERELY. NO FLUID LEAKS OR FAILURES YET, BUT I WENT AHEAD AND BOUGHT NEW BRAKE LINES FROM GM DEALERSHIP TO REPLACE BEFORE THE LINES FAIL. SEVERE RUST, APPROXIMATELY HALF OF THE THICKNESS OF THE LINES IS GONE DUE TO RUST. *TR
BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO FLOOR IN PARKING LOT AND "CHECK BRAKE SYSTEM " WARNING LIGHT CAME ON. WAS ABLE TO STOP USING PARKING BRAKE. FOUND ALL BRAKE LINES SEVERELY RUSTED AND BRAKE FLUID LEAK UNDER DRIVERS SIDE DOOR. *TR
8/21/14- LEFT WORK AT 5PM, APPROACHING AN INTERSECTION TO MAKE A RIGHT TURN, TRAVELING APPROXIMATELY 20 MPH, APPLIED BRAKES AND PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. SAFELY TURNED, PULLED OFF THE ROAD AND STOPPED VEHICLE. FOUND BRAKE FLUID POOLING ON THE ROAD UNDER BED OF PICKUP. FOUND A BADLY RUSTED AND BLOWN OUT REAR BRAKE LINE. HAD TRUCK TOWED HOME, REPLACED ALL OF THE BRAKE LINES WITH AFTERMARKET STAINLESS STEEL PRE BENT LINES AS EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM WAS RUSTED. I ALSO HAD TO REPLACE BOTH FRONT CALIPERS AS THEY TOO WERE SO RUSTED THAT THE BLEEDER SCREWS BROKE OFF AS I TRIED TO OPEN THEM. TOTAL COST FOR ME DOING ALL OF THE REPAIRS WAS OVER $500.00 HOW CAN GM CONSIDER THIS PROBLEM "NORMAL ROUTINE MAINTENANCE" ? BELT'S ,HOSES, LIGHTS, BRAKE PADS, THEY ARE NORMAL ROUTINE MAINTENANCE ITEMS, NOT BRAKE LINES. *TR
I WAS APPROACHING THE INTERSECTION AND THE LIGHT TURNED YELLOW I TRIED TO SLOW DOWN AND MY BRAKES WENT DIRECTLY TO THE FLOOR NOT ABLE TO A STOP, I SPEED UP LITTLE TO MAKE IT THRU THE LIGHT AND PULLED OVER IN TO A VACANT LOT TO I CAME TO A STOP. THEN THE ABS LIGHT CAME ON AND SERVICE BRAKES SYSTEM POPPED UP. I GOT OUT MY TRUCK WAS LEAKING BRAKE FLUID FROM DRIVER SIDE UNDER THE DRIVER SEAT. BRAKE LINES BUSTED. *TR
I APPLIED THE BRAKES TO STOP AT A STOP SIGN IN A PARKING LOT. THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. I WENT THROUGH THE STOP SIGN. ANOTHER VEHICLE HAD TO SLAM ON ITS BRAKES TO AVOID HITTING ME. THE EMERGENCY BRAKE IS USELESS FOR STOPPING THE VEHICLE IN THIS TYPE OF SITUATION BECAUSE ITS FOOT PEDAL IS POSITIONED SO HIGH YOU CANNOT STEP ON IT IN TIME. THE PROBLEM WAS CAUSED BY FAILURE OF A RUSTED THROUGH STEEL BRAKE LINE THAT RAN FROM THE ABS MODULE TO THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. IT PROVIDED THE HYDRAULIC PRESSURE FOR BOTH REAR BRAKES.THE POINT WHERE IT RUSTED THROUGH IS ABOVE THE GAS TANK COVER AND NOT VISIBLE FOR INSPECTION. I REALIZE THAT THE TRUCK IS 11 YEARS OLD AND HAS BEEN USED IN THE NORTHEAST BUT IT DOES NOT HAVE ANY SERIOUS BODY RUST AND HAS RECEIVED REASONABLE CARE. IT ALSO HAS RELATIVELY LOW MILEAGE. THE "DUAL DIAGONAL BRAKE SYSTEM" DID NOT FUNCTION TO PROVIDE ADEQUATE BRAKING ACTION. IT PROVIDED NO NOTICEABLE BRAKING ACTION. THIS IS ABOUT AS SERIOUS A SAFETY DEFECT AS I CAN IMAGINE. I AM LUCKY IT HAPPENED AT LOW SPEED AND I WAS NOT INVOLVED IN A COLLISION. *TR
I HAD JUST PULLED OF THE INTERSTATE AND WAS TRAVELING DOWN A SMALL ROAD . I PRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL TO SLOW DOWN TO MAKE A LEFT TURN. THE PEDAL WENT ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR.THANKFULL THERE WAS NO TRAFFIC IN FRONT OF ME. ONCE EMERGENCY BRAKES EVENTUALLY BROUGHT ME TO A STOP,I GOT OUT THE TRUCK AND NOTICED A POOL OF BRAKE FLUID ON THE ROAD. TO MY SURPRISE THE METAL BRAKE LINES HAD COMPLETELY RUSTED THROUGH . THANK GOD I WASN'T ON THE HIGHWAY WHEN THIS HAPPENED. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 CHEVROLET SILVERADO. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 55, THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED AND STUCK TO THE FLOORBOARD. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO BRING THE VEHICLE TO A STOP BY ENGAGING THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE BRAKE LINES CORRODED, CAUSING THE BRAKE FLUID TO LEAK. AS A RESULT, THE BRAKE LINE AND THE MASTER CYLINDER NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 130,000.
THANK GOD MY HUSBAND WAS WITH ME AND KNEW WHAT TO DO. I WAS DRIVING. AS WE WERE GOING DOWN THE INTERSTATE AT 65 MPH WE HEAR A NOISE NOT HAVING A CLUE IN THE WORLD. MY HUSBAND CRAWLS UP UNDER IT TO DISCOVER ALL THE BRAKE LINES ARE RUSTED OUT AND BUSTED. WE PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE THE FIRST OF MARCH 2014 FROM JERRY (TODD) HUNT AUTO SALE IN LEXINGTON NC. HOW COULD HE EVEN BE ALLOWED TO SELL SUCH AN UNSAFE VEHICLE? THAT WAS A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH. HOW CAN CHEVROLET EVEN PUT SUCH BRAKE LINES ON AS THAT? I FOUND ON CONSUMER AGENCY WHERE OUT OF 473 COMPLAINTS 101 WAS THE SAME ISSUE AS MINE THE SAME TRUCKS THE YEARS 1999-2003. I ALSO FOUND IN NEW YORK TIMES WHERE GM ISN'T WANTING TO DO A RECALL CAUSE IT WAS GOING TO COST MILLIONS OF DOLLARS. SO NOW WHAT? WE ALL JUST GET KILLED BEFORE SOMETHING IS DONE? *TR
RUSTED BRAKE LINES CAUSED BRAKE LINE TO BURST AND NO LONGER FUNCTION. *TR
THE 2003 SILVERADO 1500 SHORT BED PU U-JOINTS KEEP GOING OUT. HAVE REPLACED THEM ATLEAST 6 TIMES. PU HAD 30,000 WHEN PURCHASED IN 2006. THERE HAS TO BE SOMETHING IN THE BUILD OF THE PU THAT IS CAUSING THIS PROBLEM, DON'T MATTER WHAT KIND OF TIRES I PUT ON THE PU IT HAS A VIBRATION ALL THE TIME. THE VIBRATION COULD BE WHATS CAUSING THE U-JOINTS TO GO OUT. I HAVE HAD 10 PLY TIRES ON IT FOR OFF ROAD USE AND NOW I'M RUNNING HIGHWAY TIRES AND STILL HAVE THE VIBRATION, SO I DON'T THINK IT HAS TO DO WITH THE TIRES IT'S MORE OF A DESIGN IN BUILD PROBLEM RETHER THAN A MECHANICAL PROBLEM I THINK. *TR
I WAS APPROACHING MD HIGHWAY 97 ON NICODEMUS ROAD WHEN I DEPRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL, WHICH WENT TO THE FLOOR WITH NO BRAKING EFFECT. FORTUNATELY NO VEHICLE WAS COMING AS I COULD NOT STOP. THE PARKING BRAKE WAS INSUFFICENT FOR STOPPING THE TRUCK. I FINALLY HAD TO PUT THE TRANSMISSION IN REVERSE TO STOP. ONE OF THE BRAKE LINES NEAR THE ABS UNIT HAD BURST DUE TO RUST. ALL OF THE LINES AT THAT LOCATION WERE RUSTY. I REPLACED ALL LINES WITH STAINLESS STEEL LINES FROM AN AFTER-MARKET SUPPLIER. I SEE THAT THE FUEL LINES NEAR THAT LOCATION ARE ALSO RUSTY AND WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED.
I WAS BACKING MY BOAT DOWN THE BOAT RAMP WHEN THE BRAKES WENT TO THE FLOOR. PARKED THE TRUCK AND SEEN A PUDDLE UNDER DRIVER SIDE REAR TIRE AREA. DROVE HOME SLOWLY ON BACK ROADS AND PULLED IT INTO MY GARAGE TO SEE WHERE THE LEAK WAS COMING FROM. FOUND THE BRAKE LINE RUSTED ABOVE THE FRAME JUST BEFORE IT TURNS TO COME DOWN TO THE BLOCK THAT CONNECTS TO THE RUBBER LINE. I SPLICED IN A NEW SECTION OF BRAKE LINE, BLED THE BRAKES AND OK AGAIN. TRAVELING AT ABOUT 20 MPH INTO A CONGESTED INTERSECTION APPLIED THE BRAKES AND THE PEDAL GAVE NORMAL RESISTANCE, THE ABOUT A SECOND LATER WENT RIGHT TO THE FLOOR. I WAS ABLE TO USE THE EMERGENCY BRAKE TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THINKING MY BRAKE FLUID WAS LOW, I ADDED 12 OZ OF DOT 3 FLUID, PUMPED THE BRAKES SEVERAL TIMES AND DISCOVERED THAT ALL THE FLUID WAS POURING OUT OF THE REAR BRAKE LINES. HAD TO HAVE THE VEHICLE TOWED TO GET IT HOME. UPON DAYLIGHT INSPECTION FOUND THAT ALL OF THE REAR LINES ON THE TRUCK WERE IN A RUSTED CONDITION. *TR
I WAS GETTING READY TO STOP AT A RED LIGHT WHEN THE BRAKES ON THE TRUCK FAILED. THE PEDAL WENT STRAIGHT TO THE FLOOR WHEN PRESSED. AFTER PARKING THE TRUCK AND LOOKING AT THE BRAKE LINE (METAL LINE) ABOVE THE REAR-END HAD RUSTED CAUSING THE TUBE TO WEAKEN AND CRACK. *TR
ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS THE VEHICLE HAS LOST POWER AT HIGHWAY SPEED AND THE ENGINE DIES. AFTER A FEW ATTEMPTS THE ENGINE RESTARTS AND OPERATES NORMALLY FOR AN UNPREDICTABLE INTERVAL. THIS HAS HAPPENED AT LEAST 10 TIMES. THE AUTHORIZED DEALER AND OTHER MECHANIC SHOPS HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE REASON FOR THE POWER FAILURE AS THEY HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO CAUSE IT TO DUPLICATE FAILURE WHEN THEY HAVE IT. THIS SUDDEN UNEXPECTED CONDITION IS VERY DANGEROUS WHEN IT OCCURS AND RENDERS THE VEHICLE UNUSABLE FOR ANYTHING OTHER THAN SHORT USAGE. *JS
MY WIFE AND DAUGHTER WAS WITH ME AND I WAS TOWING MY BROTHER IN LAWS SMALL TRACTOR ON MY DAD'S TANDEM AXLE TRAILER. WE HAD ALREADY DROVE ABOUT 20 MILES AND COMING UP TO THEIR HOUSE TURN OFF. I TURNED INTO THERE DRIVEWAY AND STARTED TO TURN SO WE COULD THEN BACK UP THE TRAILER TO HIS BARN TO UNLOAD HIS TRACTOR. THE TRUCK STOPPED PERFECTLY BUT THE BRAKES FELT WEIRD AT THAT POINT SO WHEN COMPLETELY STOPPED I PUT INTO PARK THEN WE GOT OUT OF THE TRUCK AND UNLOADED THE TRACTOR AND WHEN WE WAS UNLOADING THE TRACTOR I WENT UP TO THE CAB OF THE TRUCK AND OPENED THE DOOR BECAUSE I WAS GOING TO STEP ON THE BRAKE PEDAL SO THE FRONT BRAKES WOULD HELP HOLD MY TRUCK IN PLACE WHEN THE WEIGHT OF THE TRACTOR HIT THE BACK OF THE TRAILER WHICH IN TURN WOULD MAKE THE REAR OF MY TRUCK REALLY LIGHT. WHEN I HIT THE PEDAL IT WENT ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR ABSOLUTELY NO PEDAL AT ALL. THEN I NOTICED THE SMELL OF BRAKE FLUID THEN LOOKED UNDER THE TRUCK AND SURE ENOUGH BRAKE FLUID EVERYWHERE RIGHT UNDERNEATH THE DRIVER SIDE DOOR. I CRAWLED UNDER THE EDGE OF THE TRUCK JUST A BIT AND NOTICE ALL THE BRAKE LINES RIGHT THERE IN ONE AREA BUT THE ONE HAD BUSTED/SPLIT. SO I KIND OF NOTICE ALL THE OTHER ONES ALL IN THAT AREA WERE REALLY RUSTED UP SOME AS WELL. IT ALMOST IN THAT AREA ONLY LOOKED AS IF THE TRUCK HAD 200,000 MILES ON IT BUT JUST ON THE BRAKE LINES NOTHING ELSE. NEEDLESS TO SAY I ONLY HAVE TWO VEHICLES AND I WORKED IN TWO DAYS SO I WENT TO MY LOCAL AUTOPARTS STORE AND BOUGHT WHAT I THOUGHT WOULD BE ENOUGH TO FIX THE TRUCK. GOT HOME AND STARTED IN ON IT. AND REALIZED I DIDN'T HAVE ONE FITTING I NEEDED SO LUCKILY FOR ME MY DAD WAS ALREADY OUT AND HE PICKED UP WHAT HE THOUGHT WAS THE PART. BRAKES GAVE OUT , COULD NOT HARDLY STOP THE VEHICLE , COME TO FIND OUT AFTER DOING A GOOGLE SEARCH THE YEARS BETWEEN 1999 AND 2003 THE ( NHTSA ) IS INVESTIGATING AND HAD OTHER COMPLAINTS ABOUT THESE PROBLEMS. I CALLED TO SEE IF GM HAD A RECALL ON THE THE VEHICLE AND I WAS TOLD THEY HAD NOT. THE GM CUSTOMER ASSIST DEPARTMENT GAVE A CASE NUMBER. REASON CORROSION ON SOME OF THE BRAKE LINES. *JS
THE TRUCK WAS PARKED ON THE DRIVEWAY AT HOME AND ON JULY 29, 2014 I WANTED TO DRIVE IT TO A STORE AND COULD NOT TURN THE KEY IN THE IGNITION. THE IGNITION SWITCH DID NOT WORK ANYMORE. THE TRUCK ONLY HAS 93000 MILES AND IN THE PAST 8 YEARS AND WE DID NOT DRIVE IT EVERY DAY. MANY DAYS AND WEEKS WAS JUST PARKED. THEREFORE, THE IGNITION SWITCH DOES NOT HAVE SO MUCH USAGE. *TR
WHILE APPROACHING A LEFT TURN AND APPLYING THE BRAKES TO SLOW FROM 45 MPH THE BRAKE PEDAL DEPRESSED ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR WITH LITTLE FORCE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE BRAKING PROCESS. THE VEHICLE WAS ROLLING AT APPROXIMATELY 15 MPH WHEN THIS OCCURRED. THE VEHICLE WAS ABLE TO SLOW DOWN AND STOP USING THE EMERGENCY BRAKE AND SHIFTING INTO PARK. AFTER INSPECTION OF THE UNDERSIDE OF THE VEHICLE THERE WAS A SMALL HOLE IN THE REAR DRIVERS BRAKE LINE APPROXIMATELY 3 INCHES AHEAD OF THE UNION JOINT JOINING THE FLEXIBLE BRAKE LINE T TO THE STEEL BRAKE LINE RUNNING FROM THE ABS UNIT. THE REMAINING PORTION OF THE LINE AS WELL AS THE REMAINING BRAKE LINES APPEARED TO BE SEVERELY CORRODED AND IN NEED OF REPLACEMENT. *JS
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 2500 HD. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING T 30 MPH, THE CONTACT CRASHED INTO ANOTHER VEHICLE AND THE AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER SUSTAINED INJURIES HOWEVER, THE EXTENT OF THE INJURIES WERE UNKNOWN. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 173,776.
FRAME RUST ENOUGH TO VOID INSPECTION. RUST NOTICED WITHIN A YEAR AFTER PURCHASE. VEHICLE NOW FAILS INSPECTION. I HAVE ANOTHER OLDER GM VEHICLE HOUSED IN THE SAME PLACE, DRIVEN IN THE SAME AREA WITH DOUBLE THE MILEAGE AND THREE YEARS OLDER WITHOUT THIS ISSUE. I FEEL IT IS DESIGN/MATERIALS ISSUE. *JS
I WAS DRIVING HOME IN MY 2003 SILVERADO FROM WORK AND HAD TO APPLY BRAKES FOR A CAR THAT HAD CAME TO A SUDDEN HALT. WHEN I APPLIED THE BRAKES, BRIEFLY THEY CAUGHT AS NORMAL, BUT THEN SUDDENLY THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. WAS TOO LATE FOR ANY WARNING AS IT HAPPENED WITH A CAR IN FRONT OF ME. THANKFULLY I WAS ABLE TO AVOID A CRASH ALTHOUGH NARROWLY. THERE HAD BEEN NO SIGNS OF BRAKE FLUID LEAKAGE OR ANYTHING ELSE BEFORE THE INCIDENT. TOOK TO A MECHANIC WHO INFORMED ME THE BRAKE LINES HAD GIVEN WAY. THIS TYPE OF INCIDENT SHOULD NEVER OCCUR. BRAKE LINES SHOULDN'T SIMPLY RUST AND GIVE WAY. THE LINES SHOULD BE INSPECTED BY GM AND AN IMMEDIATE RECALL MADE. MY CASE IS NOT THE ONLY CASE THAT HAS HAPPENED AS THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL NEWS REPORTS AND MESSAGE BOARDS FILLED WITH SIMILAR EXPERIENCES. I AM A VERY LOYAL GM CUSTOMER, BUT GM OWES IT TO THEIR CUSTOMERS TO ENSURE THEIR SAFETY. THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND VERY WELL COULD LEAD TO DEATH AND/OR SERIOUS INJURY IF HAPPENING AT THE WRONG TIME AND PLACE. *TR
ON JULY 18, 2014 WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH I WENT TO PRESS THE BRAKES AND THE PEDDLE WENT TO THE FLOOR. I PULLED OVER AND LOOKED UNDER MY TRUCK. I NOTICE THAT THE FOUR BRAKE LINE UNDER THE DRIVERS DOOR WERE ALL RUSTED AND ONE BROKE. I SEARCHED THE INTERNET AND SEE THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS TRUCK.
