PREMATURE FAILURE OF BRAKE LINES DUE IMPROPER MANUFACTURE / IMPROPER MATERIALS AND CORROSION. BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. NO BRAKING WHATSOEVER. VERY DANGEROUS. *TR
WHILE DRIVING AT SLOW SPEED IN A VERY CONGESTED AREA, THE BRAKE PEDAL SUDDENLY GOT VERY SOFT AND WENT ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR. BRAKING BECAME EXTREMELY LIMITED. WITH THE DRIVERS WINDOW OPEN THERE WAS THE SMELL OF BRAKE FLUID. IF THIS FAILURE HAD OCCURRED 5 MINUTES EARLIER WHILE BRAKING FROM HIGHWAY SPEED IT WOULD HAVE CERTAINLY RESULTED IN A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. ONCE STOPPED, A TRAIL OF BRAKE FLUID WAS APPARENT AND A PUDDLE HAD FORMED ON THE GROUND UNDER WHERE THE DRIVER SITS. CLOSER INSPECTION SHOWED ONE OF THE BRAKE LINES THAT RUNS FROM THE MASTER CYLINDER ON THE FIREWALL TO THE ABS CONTROL UNIT MOUNTED TO THE INSIDE OF THE FRAME RAIL ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE HAD RUPTURED. THIS BRAKE LINE, AS WELL AS THE ADJACENT LINE TO THE ABS CONTROLLER, AND THE LINE FROM THE ABS CONTROLLER TO THE REAR AXLE SHOWED SIGNS OF SEVERE CORROSION. THE SURFACE WAS RED AND LARGE CHUNKS OF CORRODED BRAKE LINE MATERIAL WERE FALLING OFF. THE ABS CONTROLLER, FUEL LINES IN THE AREA, AND THE FRAME RAIL ITSELF SHOWED VERY LIMITED SIGNS OF CORROSION TYPICAL OF A 7 YEAR OLD VEHICLE IN A SALT BELT STATE. 8 MONTHS PRIOR THE VEHICLE WAS SERVICED BY THE DEALER IT WAS PURCHASED AND A REPORT WAS SUBMITTED STATING THE BRAKE LINES WERE IN GOOD CONDITION. *TR
NOTICED COOLANT LEVEL WOULD GET LOW. FOUND WATER PUMP MOUNTING GASKET LEAKING, REPLACED WATER PUMP AND GASKETS, BUT CONTINUED LOSING COOLANT. FOUND OUT THERE IS A KNOW DEFECT WITH CHEVY 4.8 AND 5.3 VORTEX ENGINE HEADS CRACKING AROUND THE MOUNTING BOLT HOLES. CHEVY ISSUED A TSB BUT WILL NOT WARRANTY A KNOW DEFECT. IT STRANGE THEY WILL COVER A HVAC BLOWER MOTOR ISSUE THAT IS KNOW BUT NOT A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH HEADS CRACKING WITHOUT ANY FAULT OF THE OWNER. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 CHEVROLET SILVERADO. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE SPEEDOMETER, FUEL GUAGE, ODOMETER, PRESSURE AND THE HIGH/ LOW BEAM INDICATORS FAILED TO DISPLAY. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THE INSTRUMENT PANEL FAILED INTERMITTENTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHERE THE FAILURE WAS UNABLE TO BE DUPLICATED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,000. UPDATED 08/18/14*LJ UPDATED 09/5/2014 *JS
PICKUP IS ALWAYS GARAGED . AT 30000 MILES HAD TO CHANGE THE FRONT BRAKE SENSORS AS THE ANTI-LOCK WAS ACTIVATING AS THE TRUCK CAME TO A STOP ON DRY PAVEMENT. OCCURRED AT APPROX 5 MPH. HUBS AND SENSORS CHANGED ($600 COST). NOW AT 58000 MILES PROBLEM HAS REAPPEARED. IT APPEARS A RECALL (#05V379000) HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR SILVERADO PICKUPS FROM 1999-2002. I WILL BE CONTACTING DEALER. TRUCK LOCATED IN NORTHERN MINNESOTA.
STARTED VEHICLE IN DRIVEWAY. STEPPED ON BRAKE PEDAL TO SHIFT INTO REVERSE. BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO FLOOR, SHIFTED BACK TO PARK. SHUT OFF ENGINE. LOOKED UNDER VEHICLE AND SAW BRAKE FLUID ALL OVER VEHICLE UNDERCARRIAGE AND ON DRIVEWAY. VEHICLE IS ONLY 8 YEARS AND HAS LESS THAN 30K MILES. *TR
BEGAN TO SLOW FOR UPCOMING TRAFFIC LIGHT WHEN BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. THE LAST INCH OR SO OF BRAKE TRAVEL SEMI-ENGAGED SOME BRAKING ALLOWING ME TO STOP (WHILE APPLYING EXTREME PRESSURE TO THE BRAKE PEDAL). AT THE DEALER WAS INFORMED THAT ONE BRAKE LINE HAD CORRODED SO BAD THAT IT BURST, AND ALL OTHER LINES SHOULD ALSO BE REPLACED AS THEY SHOWED THE SAME RUSTED, CORRODED CONDITION. QUOTED A PRICE OF NEARLY $3000 DOLLARS TO REPLACE THEM ALL. I'VE NEVER SKIMPED ON MAINTENANCE, AND SINCE THIS IS A GREAT VEHICLE (BESIDES THIS ISSUE), I'M GIVING THE GO-AHEAD FOR THE WORK. HAD I BEEN TRAVELING ANY FASTER, OR THERE HAD BEEN MORE CONGESTION, A SERIOUS ACCIDENT COULD HAVE OCCURRED. *TR
STEEL BRAKE LINE FAILED CAUSING A LOSS OF BRAKE FLUID AND HYDRAULIC PRESSURE AND VEHICLE FAILED TO STOP. *JB
COUNTY ROAD (THANK GOODNESS). DRIVING ABOUT 45 MPH WHEN A LADY TURNED OFF A SIDE ROAD IN FRONT OF ME. I STEPPED ON THE BRAKE PEDAL TO AVOID A REAR END COLLISION. THE BRAKE PEDAL HELD MOMENTARILY BUT THEN WENT TO THE FLOOR. I SWERVED RIGHT INTO THE DITCH AND USED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE TO KEEP FROM STRIKING HER CAR IN THE REAR. IN ORDER TO GET THE VEHICLE HOME (APPROXIMATELY 3 MILES), I HAD TO USE THE EMERGENCY BRAKE TO STOP. COULD NOT AFFORD TO GET THE TRUCK TO THE DEALERSHIP (APPROXIMATELY 15 MILES AWAY IN HEAVY SUBURBAN TRAFFIC) FOR DIAGNOSIS AND REPAIR. SAVED UP AND TOOK THE TRUCK TO A LOCAL MECHANIC (09/2012). MECHANIC ASK IF THE TRUCK HAD EVER BEEN UNDER WATER. REASON FOR QUESTION WAS THE BRAKE LINES, FRONT CALIPERS, AND TOP FORWARD FRAME WERE SEVERELY RUSTED. THE BRAKE LINES RUSTED THROUGH CAUSING A BREAK FAILURE. THIS TRUCK HAS LESS THAN 21,000 MILES, NEVER BEEN SUBMERGED IN WATER, OCCASIONALLY DRIVEN IN THE WINTER, WASHED FREQUENTLY (ESPECIALLY IN THE WINTER) AND WAXED, AND HAS ZERO BODY OR BED RUST. AFTER REPAIR, THE ABS LIGHT CAME ON AND STAYS ON. I READ SOMEWHERE ON THIS SITE A BULLETIN REGARDING PREMATURE ABS SENSOR FAILURE AND DEALERS FIXING THE SENSORS BUT I CAN NOT FIND THE ABS BULLETIN NOW. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING 35 MPH WHEN THE BRAKES FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A PERSONAL MECHANIC FOR DIAGNOSIS AND THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THE BRAKE LINE WAS RUSTED COMPLETELY AND THE ENTIRE BRAKE LINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO TO ASSIST. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 79,000. ..UPDATED 09/07/12 *BF THE CONSUMER STATED THE VEHICLE HAD A TOTAL BRAKE LINE FAILURE. ALL LINES HAD TO BE REPLACED. THE MECHANIC INFORMED THE CONSUMER THERE HAS BEEN ALOT OF THIS FAILURE BETWEEN 2000 AND 2005 PICK UPS. UPDATED 09/17/2012 *JS
5-29 12 FRONT BRAKE LINES LEAKING FLUID IN DRIVEWAY. SEVERE CORROSION ON BRAKE LINES .LOCAL DEALER REPLACED BRAKE FRONT LINES. 5-22-13 DRIVING THE DOWN ROAD ,COMPLETE LOSS OF BRAKES ,EMERGENCY STOP!! REAR BRAKE LINE ON FRAME RAIL HAD BURST DUE TO CORROSION. LOCAL DEALER REPLACED "ROTTED" BRAKE LINES WITH NEW CORROSION RESISTANT LINES. ALL REPAIRS DONE AT DEALER ON FILE. *TR
BOUGHT MY TRUCK NEW IN 2004 AS MY RETIREMENT VEHICLE. I HAVE ONLY 42,000 MILES. I HAD MY INSTRUMENT CLUSTER REPLACED TWO YEARS AGO UNDER A DEALER WARRANTY DUE TO A DEFECTIVE SPEEDOMETER. WITHIN THE PAST WEEK MY TRANSMISSION HAS RANDOMLY SLIPPED FROM A DEAD STOP AS WELL AS DOUBLE CLUNKED FROM A DEAD STOP. MOST RECENTLY, THE AC IS RANDOMLY BLOWING OUT HOT AIR. I SHOULD HAVE BOUGHT A GOLF CART INSTEAD. SINCE THE TRUCK IS NOW 7+ YEARS OLD IT IS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY. I'M HOPING THE TRANSMISSION DOES NOT COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN AND LEAVE ME STRANDED WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE FREEWAY ON A HOT SUMMER DAY. NOTE: I WAS A VICTIM OF THE US FIDELIS EXTENDED WARRANTY SCAM. *TR
WHILE PULLING UP TO A DRIVE UP WINDOW AT A FOOD STORE, THE BRAKES WENT ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR. I HEARD THE PRESSURE RELEASING UNDERNEATH. DISCOVERED THAT THE LEFT SIDE BRAKE LINE FROM THE MASTER CYLINDER TO THE ABS MODULE HAD BURST FROM RUSTING THROUGH. THERE IS HEAVY RUST ON SECTIONS OF ALL OF THE LINES. LUCKILY, I WAS ONLY GOING VERY SLOWLY WHEN IS BURST. *TR
DRIVING 04 SILVERADO NOTICED BRAKES FEELING FUNNY.......DRIVING TO WORK PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR,MADE IT TO WORK AND SEEN BRAKE FLUID POURING OUT OF THE LINE, AFTER CLOSER LOOK REALIZED ALL THE LIBES ARE COMPLETLY CORRODED......UNACCEPTABLE FOR 8 YEAR OLD VEHICAL......SUMTHING SHOULD B DONE. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 CHEVROLET SILVERADO. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING 35 MPH WHEN THE BRAKES FAILED AND THE VEHICLE CRASHED INTO THE WOODS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DESTROYED AND THE BRAKE WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED AFTER THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN TOWED TO THE CONTACT'S HOME. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 93,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 CHEVROLET SILVERADO. THE CONTACT STATED THEY RECEIVED A LETTER APPROXIMATELY ONE YEAR AGO FROM THE MANUFACTURER STATING THAT THE INSTRUMENT PANEL WARRANTY WAS EXTENDED TO SEVEN YEARS AND 70,000 MILES. IN ADDITION, THE CONTACT WAS ADVISED NOT TO BRING THE VEHICLE IN UNDER THE WARRANTY UNLESS THE FUEL GAUGE HAD COMPLETELY FAILED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE SPEEDOMETER HAD BEEN STUCK AT 120 MPH. LATER, THE SPEEDOMETER INDEPENDENTLY DROPPED BELOW ZERO AND REMAINED STUCK THERE. IN ADDITION, THE ENGINE RPM GAUGE WOULD FLUCTUATE SPORADICALLY BUT THE ENGINE WOULD NOT RESPOND. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND WAS TOLD THAT THE FAILURES WERE NOT COVERED UNDER THE EXTENDED WARRANTY FOR THE INSTRUMENT PANEL AND WAS ADVISED THAT THE ENTIRE INSTRUMENT PANEL WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 116,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 117,000. UPDATED 7/18/12 *CN
BRAKE LINE RUSTED AND FAILED WHILE DRIVING. HEAVY RUST ON SEVERAL BRAKE LINES, FRAME, AND CROSS MEMBERS. *TR
DUE TO BRAKE FAILURE ON MY WIFE'S 2003 CHEVY 2500 HD SILVERADO CAUSED BY CORRODED BRAKE LINES, I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE WISE TO HAVE THE BRAKE LINES ON MY 2004 CHEVY 2500 HD SILVERADO CHECKED. UPON INSPECTION OF THE BRAKE LINES BY FITZGERALD AUTO IN FREDERICK, MD (WHERE I BOUGHT MY TRUCK, AND WHERE MY WIFE'S TRUCK HAD JUST HAD ITS BRAKE LINES REPLACED), THE BRAKE LINES WERE SEVERELY CORRODED. SOME AREAS OF THE BRAKE LINES WERE RUSTED SO BADLY THAT THEY WERE FLAKING OFF. I WAS INFORMED BY THE TECHNICIAN AND THE SERVICE ADVISER THAT REPLACEMENT OF THE BRAKE LINES IS IMMINENT. AND WHILE IT WAS ALREADY CLEAR TO ME FROM THE VISUAL INSPECTION, THEY BOTH BELIEVED REPLACING THE BRAKE LINES NOW WAS NECESSARY TO AVOID BRAKE FAILURE IN THE NEAR FUTURE. THE TOTAL COST FOR MY TRUCK'S REPAIR WAS $1408.95. THIS IS AN 8 YEAR OLD VEHICLE, AND THE BRAKE LINES SHOULD NOT BE IN SUCH BAD CONDITION IN SUCH A SHORT TIME. I HAVE INSPECTED MY NEIGHBOR'S 2004 FORD F250 AND HIS BRAKE LINES LOOK BRAND NEW (THOUGH THEY ARE THE ORIGINAL BRAKE LINES). I HAVE INSPECTED A 2007 CHEVY AVALANCHE, AND THAT VEHICLES BRAKE LINES LOOK BRAND NEW (THOUGH THEY ARE THE ORIGINAL BRAKE LINES). WHATEVER MATERIAL WAS USED ON MY (AND MY WIFE'S) MODEL YEAR TRUCK(S), IT WAS SUBSTANDARD, AND CAUSES A HAZARD. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE HAVING THE VEHICLE EXAMINED BY AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, HE WAS INFORMED THAT THE BRAKE LINES WERE SEVERELY RUSTED AND CORRODED. THE ROTORS AND BACKING PLATES WERE ALSO CORRODED. AS A RESULT, THE CONTACT STATED THAT PIECES OF THE BACKING PLATES FRACTURED WHILE DRIVING. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER AND DEALER WERE NOTIFIED, BUT OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 43,000. UPDATED 06/06/12 *JS
OWNER WAS DRIVING ON A MAJOR HIGHWAY WHEN ANOTHER VEHICLE PULLED ONTO THE HIGHWAY FROM THE SHOULDER. DURING THE EMERGENCY STOP THE BRAKES BEGAN TO FAIL, AND COMPLETELY FAILED AT THE CONCLUSION OF THE STOP, WITH THE BRAKE PEDAL GOING TO THE FLOOR. ALTHOUGH THERE WAS NO RESULTING ACCIDENT, THE POTENTIAL FOR A SERIOUS ACCIDENT WAS VERY PREVALENT. UPON INSPECTION, BRAKE FLUID WAS FOUND DRIPPING FROM THE FRAME RAIL JUST BELOW THE MASTER CYLINDER AND BRAKE BLOCK AREA. THE BRAKE LINES HAD RUSTED TO THE POINT OF FAILURE WHERE THE LINES WAS MOUNTED TO THE FRAME AND HELD IN PLACE BY PLASTIC RETAINING CLIPS..ON ADDITIONAL INSPECTION, THE OTHER BRAKE HARDLINES WERE FOUND TO BE RUSTED AS WELL. THE ONLY VIABLE FIX WOULD SEEM TO BE A TOTAL REPLACEMENT OF THE EXISTING LINES, TO PREVENT CONCATENATED FAILURES. *TR
I TRIED TO STOP THE TRUCK AND THE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. MY MECHANIC SAID THAT THE BRAKE LINE RUSTED AND HE NEEDED TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE SYSTEM. *TR
I CAME TO A STOP IN MY DRIVE WAY WHEN MY BRAKE PEDAL WENT COMPLETELY TO THE FLOOR.I KNEW RIGHT AWAY WHAT HAD HAPPENED.I BLEW MY MAIN BRAKE LINE THAT EXITS THE MASTER CYLINDER.I INSPECTED THE BRAKE LINES AND REALIZED THEY WERE ALL CORRODED VERY BADLY.I HAVE NEVER HAD BRAKE LINES CORRODE ON ME SO BADLY IN SUCH A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME.THE VEHICLE IS ONLY A 2004 SILVERADO,IT IS NOT THAT OLD IN MY OPINION.I HAVE HAD SEVERAL VEHICLES,AND HAVE NEVER HAD A BRAKE LINE RUST THE WAY MY SILVERADO HAS.I AM VERY FORTUNATE THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED WHEN THIS OCCURRED,I COULD OF SERIOUSLY HURT MYSELF OR SOMEONE ELSE ON THE ROAD,OR EVEN KILLED SOMEONE DUE TO THIS.FOR WHAT IT IS WORTH,IT SEEMS THAT 99-06 CHEVY SILVERADOS HAVE A LOT OF COMPLAINTS IN REGARDS TO RUSTED THROUGH AND COMPLETE FAILURE OF THE BRAKE LINES. BRAKE LINE FAILED AS I WAS BACKING OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY . FOUND THE CAUSE TO BE SEVERE RUSTING OF THE UNDERBODY I FIND THIS CONDITION UNACCEPTABLE FOR A 30.000 DOLLAR TRUCK WITH THIS MANY MILES. I AM THANKFUL THERE WERE NO INJURIES OR PROPERTY DAMAGE. *JS
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 2500. WHILE DRIVING 20 MPH AND ATTEMPTING TO ENGAGE THE BRAKES, THE BRAKES BECAME INOPERABLE AND ALL OF THE BRAKE FLUID LEAKED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED THAT THE BRAKE LINES NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 90,000.
BRAKE LINES RUSTED AND RUPTURED AT A BEND GOING TO LEFT FRONT WHEEL. THIS TRUCK WAS BOUGHT NEW BY ME IN SOUTH FLORIDA AND NEVER DRIVEN ON THE BEACH OR IN SALTY CONDITIONS. WHY ARE YOU ONLY LOOKING AT 1999 THROUGH 2003 WHEN THEY CLEARLY DID NOT IMPROVE THE BRAKE LINES FOR 2004? THE UNDERSIDE OF MY TRUCK HAS BAD CORROSION. *JS
2004 CHEVROLET SILVERADO HAS SEVERELY RUSTED AND CORRODED BRAKE LINES. MUST BE REPLACED. WITH ALL THE EMPHASIS ON SAFETY IT IS ABSURD THAT THESE VEHICLES DO NOT HAVE CORROSION PROOF ( STAINLESS STEEL BRAKE LINES). *TR REPAIR WILL BE VERY COSTLY. I HAD THREE FORD PICKUPS PRIOR TO THIS CHEVROLET, KEPT THEM FOR A MINIMUM OF 10 YEARS AND NEVER HAD A BRAKE LINE PROBLEM. THESE ARE OBVIOUSLY INFERIOR/DEFECTIVE AND VEHICLE SHOULD BE RECALLED AND THE BRAKE LINES REPLACED AT CHEVROLET'S EXPENSE.
ON SATURDAY MARCH 3, 2012, MY SON WAS BACKING THE TRUCK OUT OF A DRIVEWAY WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. INVESTIGATION SHOWED THAT BRAKE FLUID WAS SQUIRTING FROM A BROKEN BRAKE LINE UNDER THE BED OF THE TRUCK AND ABOUT 6 - 8 INCHES REARWARD FROM THE BACK OF THE CAB. SUBSEQUENTLY, I FOUND THAT ALL BRAKE LINES ARE DEFECTIVE AND THERE WILL BE A COST IN THE AREA OF $1600 TO REPAIR THESE ITEMS. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500 HD. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 25 MPH WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS ENGAGED AND FAILED TO RESPOND. THE VEHICLE CONTINUED THROUGH AN INTERSECTION. THE BRAKE WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED AT THE TIME OF FAILURE. THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO SLOW DOWN TO A COMPLETE STOP AFTER APPLYING THE BRAKE SEVERAL TIMES. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO RESUME DRIVING AT AN EXTREMELY SLOW SPEED. THE VEHICLE WAS ALSO INSPECTED BY THE DEALER. THE CONTACT PLANNED TO EVENTUALLY HAVE THE FOUR BRAKE LINES REPLACED DUE TO A SIGNIFICANT CONCERN OF A POTENTIAL SAFETY HAZARD. ON FEB..9 2012 I WAS IN A DRIVE THRU AUTOMATED CAR WASH, WHEN DRIVING OUT I WENT TO STEP ON BRAKE & THE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. I PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE LIFTED THE HOOD & CHECKED THE MASTER CYLINDER & SAW THAT IT NEEDED FLUID, I WENT INTO THE CONVENIENCE STORE & BOUGHT A PINT OF BRAKE FLUID, I FILLED THE MASTER CYLINDER, IT TOOK THE WHOLE BOTTLE OF FLUID, I WALKED TO THE SIDE OF THE TRUCK TO TEST THE BRAKE PEDAL & NOTICED THE FLUID LEAKED RIGHT OUT ON THE GROUND WITHOUT STEPPING ON THE BRAKE PEDAL. I HAD THE TRUCK TOWED TO MY REPAIR SHOP, WHEN PUT ON LIFT THE MECHANIC POINTED OUT THE ROTTED OUT BRAKE LINE BY THE MODULAR VALVE PLUS THE OTHER THREE LINES WERE ROTTED & WERE UNSAFE, FOR A TEMPORARY FIX I HAD THE ONE LINE FIXED BY REPLACING A PIECE OF THE BROKEN LINE. IT WAS BROUGHT TO MY ATTENTION ABOUT THE ONGOING INVESTIGATION WITH NHTSA. I PURCHASED THE TRUCK IN NOV. 2003. *TR

MY HOME WAS APPROX 3MILES AWAY. USED LOWGEAR, AND PUT IT INTO 4 WHEEL DRIVE LOW TO GET IT HOME. HAD I TTOWED TO MONROE MUFFLER SHOP. STEEL BRAKE LINES RUSTED OUT, HAD FRONT BRAKE LINES REPLACED. AFTER RETURNING TO THE TRUCK FROM AN ERRAND I STARTED THE ENGINE AND, UPON DEPRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL TO PUT THE VEHICLE IN GEAR, THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. NO WARNING LAMPS OF ANY SORT WERE ILLUMINATED PRIOR TO THE BRAKE PEDAL GOING TO THE FLOOR. PUMPING OF THE PEDAL DID NOT PRODUCE ANY RESISTANCE. AFTER A FEW MINUTES THE BRAKE FLUID LEVEL WARNING LAMP CAME ON. BRAKE FLUID WAS ADDED BUT DID NOT RESULT IN ANY RESISTANCE FROM THE PEDAL. HAD TO HAVE THE TRUCK TOWED HOME WHERE IT THEN SAT OVER-NIGHT. THE NEXT MORNING I OBSERVED A LARGE WET SPOT ON THE DRIVEWAY JUST BELOW THE DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR. I LOOKED UNDERNEATH AND SAW THAT ALL OF THE BRAKE LINES GOING INTO OR OUT OF THE ABS MODULE WERE SEVERELY CORRODED AND AT LEAST ONE HAD OBVIOUSLY BEEN LEAKING BRAKE FLUID. THE TRUCK WAS TOWED TO A CHEVROLET DEALER. I ARRIVED AS THEY WERE RAISING THE TRUCK ON A LIFT. EVIDENTLY THEY ALSO ADDED SOME BRAKE FLUID BECAUSE QUITE A LARGE PUDDLE WAS FORMING ON THE SHOP FLOOR BELOW WHERE THE BRAKE LINES ENTER THE ABS MODULE. THE TECHNICIAN, THE SERVICE CONSULTANT, AND I ALL OBSERVED THE RUSTED BRAKE LINES, AND FLUID WAS LITERALLY DRIPPING FROM ONE THAT HAD OBVIOUSLY BURST. THE DEALER ADVISED THAT GM DOES NOT MAKE REPLACEMENT STEEL BRAKE LINES SO ALL THE LINES WOULD NEED TO BE HAND FABRICATED BY THE TECHNICIAN. DEALER ALSO ADVISED THAT THE ABS MODULE MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE OF HOW CORRODED THE BRAKE LINE FITTINGS ARE (FITTINGS ARE STEEL, ABS MODULE IS ALUMINUM) WHERE THEY SCREW INTO THE MODULE. WE ALSO OBSERVED THAT THE FUEL LINES WERE SEVERELY CORRODED. I HAVE OWNED MANY VEHICLES FAR OLDER AND WITH FAR MORE MILEAGE AND HAVE NEVER HAD TO REPLACE THE STEEL BRAKE LINES. I BELIEVE THE DESIGN IS FLAWED (THE ROUTING AND PLACEMENT OF LINES AND MODULE) OR THE BRAKE LINE MATERIAL (STEEL, INSTEAD OF STAINLESS STEEL) IS INSUFFICIENT. I HAVE PHOTOS AND THE OLD PARTS. *TR

WENT TO USE THE TRUCK AND BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOORBOARD. LOOKED UNDER THE TRUCK AND FLUID HAD SHOT OUT EVERYWHERE. TWO BLOWN BRAKE LINES DUE TO ROTTED OUT CONDITION OF THE LINES. REPAIR TOTAL OF $411.68. 2 LINES PLUS FITTINGS PLUS NEW BLEEDER SCREWS. THE MECHANIC TELLS ME THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH GM PICK-UPS AND THAT THE OTHER BRAKE LINES ARE ON THE EDGE OF GOING ALSO. THESE LINES TOO ARE ROTTED AND NEED TO BE REPLACED ASAP. I SEE THAT THERE IS AN INVESTIGATION WITH THE NHTSA ACTION NUMBER OF EA11001. THE INVESTIGATION SHOULD BE EXPANDED TO INCLUDE ADDITIONAL YEARS FOR VEHICLES BEFORE 1999 AND AFTER 2003. I WAS LUCKY MY INCIDENT HAPPENED IN THE DRIVEWAY AND NOT DOING 70 MPH OUT ON THE HIGHWAY. I AM LOOKING AT AN ADDITIONAL REPAIR BILL OF ABOUT $750-$800 TO REPLACE THE OTHER LINES. NEEDLESS TO SAY I AM DISTRESSED TO BE IN THIS POSITION DUE TO THE MATERIALS USED AND INSTALLATION POSITION OF THESE LINES. *KB
