THE SPEEDOMETER IN MY 2004 CHEVROLET SILVERADO TRUCK IS NON FUNCTIONAL. AT TIMES IT PEGS OUT PAST THE 120 MPH MARK. AT OTHER TIMES IT PEGS BELOW THE 0 MPH MARK AND WILL NOT MOVE. IT HAS COME TO MY ATTENTION (VIA INTERNET SEARCHES ON THE PROBLEM) THAT THIS IS A COMMON MALFUNCTION IN CHEVROLET TRUCKS, YET GM HAS ISSUED NO RECALL. I FEEL THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION AND SHOULD BE REMEDIED BY GM. *JB
SPEEDOMETER ACTING ERRATIC NOW STUCK ON 120 MPH NON FUNCTIONAL NOW VERY EXPENSIVE FIX FROM GM(NEW INSTRUMENT CLUSTER) *JB
I WAS ON INTERNET AND DECIDED TO DO SOME CHECKING ON A PROBLEM I'VE HAD FOR SOMETIME NOW WITH MY TRUCK. MY-O-MY I'M NOT ALONE! SPEEDOMETER WENT FROM 0 TO ABOVE 120 MPH SEVERAL TIMES THEN JUST QUIT. I CALLED DEALER THEY SAID WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED, MONTH WISE, NOT MILEAGE (22,000 MILES!). THIS IS NUTS, THE MORE SOPHISTICATED VEHICLES BECOME THE MORE PROBLEMS THERE ARE! I WAS TOLD ENTIRE CLUSTER NEEDED TO BE CHANGED. I DIDN'T INQUIRE ABOUT PRICE BECAUSE A DEALER WILL "RAPE" ME FOR COST OF REPAIRS. NOW I DRIVE USING MY TACK WOULD BE NICE TO HAVE GM FESS UP TO THEIR HIGH TECH FAILURE AND FIX IT!! *TR
ON FIRST START IN THE MORNING OF THAT DATE MY SPEEDOMETER WENT UP TO 65 MPH AND STAYED THERE EVER SINCE. I HAVE NO WAY TO GO WITHIN THE SPEED LIMIT. *JB
2004 CHEVY TAHOE SPEEDOMETER SUDDENLY READS 120 MPH THEN SETTLES TO 60 MPH WHEN PARKED. GRADUALLY CORRECTS ITSELF WITH STOPS AND STARTS ONLY TO REOCCUR. ITS DANGEROUS NOT KNOWING THE SPEED I'M ACTUALLY TRAVELING ON THE FREEWAY. DEALERS X 3 SAY $500+ TO REPLACE INSTRUMENT PANEL WITH THIS OBVIOUS AND VERY COMMON FACTORY DEFECT. A RECALL IS NEEDED. *JB
SPEEDOMETER BEGAN SHOWING WRONG SPEED. STARTED WITH DISPLAYING 50 MPH WHILE I WAS ACTUALLY TRAVELING 85 MPH OR FASTER. NOW IT DISPLAYS 45 MPH WHILE PARKED IN DRIVEWAY AND 110 MPH OR MORE WHILE TRAVELING DOWN HIGHWAY. *JB
2004 CHEVY SILVERADO SPEEDOMETER WILL NOT RETURN TO ZERO. SPEED READING ARE ERRATIC. YOU DO NOT KNOW AT WHAT SPEED YOU ARE DRIVING. *JB
SPEEDOMETER FREQUENTLY REGISTERS THE INCORRECT SPEED OR ON OCCASIONS, NO SPEED AT ALL. SPEED INDICATED MAY BE SIGNIFICANTLY HIGHER OR LOWER THAN ACTUAL SPEED. I FREQUENTLY HAVE HAD TO RELY ON A GPS TO DETERMINE ACTUAL SPEEDS. RELYING ON THE SPEEDOMETER I HAVE SEEN THE SPEED INDICATED AT 55 MPH WHEN ACTUAL SPEED WAS ABOUT 80 MPH. SHUTTING OFF THE VEHICLE AND RESTARTING IT WILL CAUSE THE SPEEDOMETER TO RESET APPROXIMATELY 5 MPH SLOWER. THIS WILL HAVE TO BE REPEATED UNTIL THE NEEDLE REACHES 0 MPH. ONCE RESET THE SPEEDOMETER WILL TYPICALLY OPERATE NORMALLY FOR SOME RANDOM PERIOD OF TIME. *NM
LIKE MANY OTHERS I HAVE A 2004 SILVERADO AND THE SPEEDOMETER WENT CRAZY REGISTERS WRONG, STATS OUT AT 90 MPH AND GOES OVER A HUNDRED AT ABOUT 20 MILES AN HOUR, I HAVE SEEN THE POSTS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM, LOOKS TO ME TO BE A MAJOR ACCIDENT PROBLEM! MY TRUCK ONLY HAS 30,000 MILES ON IT! MIKE QUEEN . *JB
TOTAL FAILURE OF THE SPEEDOMETER. SEARCH ON THE NET FINDS THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM. RECOMMENDED SOLUTION IS TO REPLACE ENTIRE IP CLUSTER. *NM
I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM AS MANY. THE NEEDLE STARTED STICKING. THEN IT CONTINUOUSLY GOT WORSE. NOW I DO NOT KNOW HOW FAST I AM GOING. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND IT WILL COST 450.00 TO REPLACE. *NM

TL* - THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 CHEVROLET SILVERADO Z71. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE SPEEDOMETER DID NOT ACCURATELY REGISTER THE SPEED BEING DRIVEN IN THIS VEHICLE. EVEN WHEN NOT DRIVING THE SPEEDOMENTER REGISTERED A SPEED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE ENGINE LIGHT HAS BEEN ON 80% OF THE TIME SINCE HE OWNED THE VEHICLE.*AK UPDATED 2/22/2007 - *NM
2004 CHEVY 3500. SPEEDOMETER READS 75 MPH SITTING IN DRIVEWAY. SOMETIMES IT WORKS AND SOMETIMES IT DOESN'T. *JB
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 CHEVROLET SILVERADO. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS WITH THE BRAKES APPLIED THEY EXTENDED TO THE FLOOR AND THE VEHICLE FAILED TO COME TO A COMPLETE STOP. THE DEALER WAS INFORMED ABOUT THE FAILURE AND STATED THAT THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 70000.
MY SPEEDOMETER ON MY 2004 SILVERADO FUNCTIONS INCORRECTLY. IT READS ANYWHERE BETWEEN 30 AND 120 AND I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT MY SPEED IS. APPARENTLY THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS OF OWNERS ARE HAVING THIS PROBLEM. THIS IS APPARENTLY A SAFETY ISSUE AND THERE MOST DEFINITELY SHOULD BE A RECALL. *NM
I HAVE A 2004 SILVERADO 1500, THE SPEEDOMETER STARTED READING LOWER NUMBERS WHILE ON THE FREEWAY. AT 70 IT STARTED TO READ 45, THEN 25, THEN 120. VERY DISTRACTING AND QUITE DANGEROUS. FOUND NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ABOUT GM SPEEDOMETERS ONLINE. NEEDS A RECALL BEFORE SOMEONE GETS HURT. *NM
HYDRAULIC BRAKE SYSTEM IS INEFFECTIVE IN STOPPING THIS VEHICLE. BRAKES ARE SPONGY AND GO TO THE FLOOR WHEN STOPPED OR IF HARD PRESSURE IS APPLIED. THIS VEHICLE WOULD NOT STOP IF A CHILD RAN IN FRONT OF IT. THREE ATTEMPTS TO REPAIR AND NOW WE ARE TOLD IT IS PART OF THE DESIGN AND IF WE USED IT MORE THIS WOULD HELP. THE NEWER MODELS DO NOT HAVE THIS SYSTEM. I WONDER WHY? *JB

PURCHASED A USED VEHICLE AND FOUND OUT IT HAS A PROBLEM THAT IS VERY COMMON AND THE MANUFACTURER IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM BUT HAS DONE NOTHING TO CORRECT THE DEFECT. *NM
MY 2004 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500'S SPEEDOMETER FUNCTIONS ERRATICALLY SOMETIMES STATING THAT I AM GOING 120 MPH OR 0 MPH. I TOOK IT TO MY MECHANIC WHO STATED THAT THEY JUST REPLACED AN INSTRUMENT CLUSTER ON A TAHOE. WAS TOLD THAT THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER WOULD HAVE TO BE SENT TO GM FOR REPAIR AND COST ABOUT $350 OR $400. I HAVE BEEN READING HERE AND ON THE INTERNET AND IT SEEMS THAT A LOT OF FOLKS ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM. CAN A RECALL BE FORCED OR SUGGESTED BY THE GOVERNMENT?*JB
SPEEDOMETER ON 2004 CHEVY SILVERADO 1500 MALFUNCTIONED AND IS NOW STUCK ON 120 MPH. DEALER SAYS IT WILL COST $500 TO REPAIR. CHEVY FORUM BOARDS ON THE INTERNET INDICATE MANY FAILURES FROM 2003 TO PRESENT FOR ALL CHEVY AND GMC TRUCKS. LACK OF A PROPERLY FUNCTIONING SPEEDOMETER IS AN OBVIOUS SAFETY HAZARD AND SHOULD BE RECALLED AND REPAIRED AT THE MANUFACTURERS EXPENSE. *JB

2004 CHEVREOLET SILVERADO - BOUGHT NEW SPEEDOMETER MALFUNCTIONING (NEEDLE HANGS UP, ETC.) AT 45,000 MILES. *JB
MY 2004 SILVERADO JUST REACHED 40,000 MILES WHEN MY SPEEDOMETER STOPPED FUNCTIONING. IT'S STOPPED AT 120 MPH AND WANT GO DOWN. *NM
GM HAS RECALLED 2004 SILVERADO WITH LEATHER SEATS BECAUSE IT CAUSES AIR BAG TO DEPLOY WHEN NOT IN AN ACCIDENT OR NOT TO DEPLOY WHEN IN AN ACCIDENT. THE ONLY REMEDY IS TO BUY BACK THE VEHICLE AT FULL COST PER RECALL ID# 7297, BUT GM HAS REFUSED TO BUY BACK MY VEHICLE EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE THE ONES THAT SUBMITTED THE RECALL. THE DEALER INFORMED THE CONSUMER EVERYTHING WAS WORKING AS DESIGNED. UPDATED 05/26/11 THE CONSUMER STATED ONLY LEASED VEHICLES WERE RECALLED. UPDATED 06/01/11. *TR THE CONSUMER STATED HE WAS INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT AND THE AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. UPDATED 05/16/12 THE CONSUMER STATED ON ONE OCCASION, THE PASSENGER AIR BAG WAS COMING ON AND GOING OFF DURING NORMAL DRIVING CONDITIONS WHILE HIS DAUGHTER WAS SITTING IN THE SEAT. 2004 CHEVROLET SILVERADO Z71 W/ 44,300 MILES IS HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE SPEEDOMETER. THERE IS NO WAY TO TELL HOW FAST I AM GOING. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS AND WIDESPREAD PROBLEM WITH THE NEWER GMS. *NM
SPEEDOMETER SOMETIMES READS 30 MPH MORE THEN ACTUAL VEHICLE SPEED AND SOMETIMES READS LESS THEN ACTUAL VEHICLE SPEED. SPEEDOMETER SOMETIMES NEVER GETS ABOVE ZERO THOUGH VEHICLE IS IN MOTION. *NM

THE SPEEDOMETER ON MY 2004 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 2500HD IS NOT WORKING PROPERLY. WITH THE VEHICLE TURNED OFF IT IS READING 50MPH RIGHT NOW. I ALSO DO NOT GET ACCURATE SPEED READINGS WHILE DRIVING, WHICH COULD LEAD TO ME DRIVING TO FAST/SLOW AND POSSIBLY CAUSING INJURY TO MYSELF OR OTHERS.
TL* - THE CONTACT STATED THAT ON 10/25/05, HE TOOK VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR A FREE OIL CHANGE. HE RECEIVED A REPAIR ORDER AND DIDN'T PAY ATTENTION TO THE ORDER AND FOLDED IT UP AND PUT AWAY IN GLOVE BOX. THE CONTACT STATED THAT ON 12/23/06 A MECHANIC LOOKED AT THE VEHICLE AND TOLD THE CONTACT THAT THE BRAKE ROTORS WERE RUSTED AND CHEWED UP AND THE PADS WERE GONE. WHEN HE LOOKED OVER THE REPAIR ORDER FROM 10/25/06 HE FOUND THAT THEY NOTED ON THE REPAIR ORDER THAT THE ROTORS WERE RUSTED AT THAT TIME. THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER, AND WAS GIVEN FILE # 71-461701161. THE MANUFACTURER CONTACTED DEALERSHIP AND INFORMED THEM THAT THEY MUST RESURFACE THE ROTORS. THE PARTS AND LABOR WOULD BE THE CONTACTS RESPONSIBILITY. THE CONTACT FELT THAT WITH SUCH LOW MILEAGE ON THE VEHICLE BRAKES SHOULD NOT BE REPAIRED SO SOON. UPDATED 02/09/07. *JB
SPEEDOMETER STARTED ACTING ERRATICALLY, SHOWED 90 MPH WHEN REALLY GOING 50 MPH, NOW HAS TOTALLY STOPPED WORKING, PEG AT OVER 120 MPH VERY UNSAFE NOT KNOWING YOUR SPEED. NO REPAIRS HAVE BEEN DONE AT THIS POINT, USING TACH TO GET MY SPEED. *NM
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE TURNING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, THERE WAS A NOISE IN THE STEERING COLUMN. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE THE STEERING COLUMN WAS REPLACED. THE PROBLEM RETURNED A YEAR LATER AND THE STEERING COLUMN WAS REPLACED A SECOND TIME. WHEN THE PROBLEM RETURNED A THIRD TIME, A YEAR LATER, THE DEALERSHIP STATED THE MANUFACTURER AUTHORIZED REPAIR WAS LUBING THE STEERING COLUMN.

THE SPEEDOMETER ON MY 2004 CHEVROLET SILVERADO DOES NOT WORK PROPERLY. AT TIMES IT WILL SHOW 0 MPH WHEN THE CAR IS BEING DRIVEN. WHEN THE SPEEDOMETER DECIDES TO WORK IT MOVES IN A JERKING FASHION. THE FIRST TIME I REALIZED THERE WAS AN ISSUE WITH THE SPEEDOMETER WAS BECAUSE I WAS PULLED OVER BY THE STATE POLICE ON A RURAL HIGHWAY GOING 26 MILES OVER THE SPEED LIMIT. OTHER GAUGES ALSO DO NOT WORK. THE OIL GAUGE DOES NOT REGISTER AND IS POINTING DOWNWARD. THE FUEL GAUGE NOW DOES NOT WORK AND POINTS OFF THE SCALE. I HAVE SEEN ON THE INTERNET MANY COMPLAINTS WITH SIMILAR ISSUES. *JB

THE SPEEDOMETER ON MY 2004 SILVERADO K1500 IS PEGGED RIGHT NOW AND IS NOT WORKING AT ALL. THIS HAPPENED SHORTLY AFTER THE WARRANTY EXPIRED. I HAVE SEEN MANY SIMILAR COMPLAINTS ONLINE AT WWW.TOPIX.NET/FORUM/AUTOS/CHEVROLET-TAHOE/T2BGKBGI55EKNU77C. THIS IS UNSAFE AND APPARENTLY FAIRLY COMMON WITH GM VEHICLES, YET THERE HAS BEEN NO RECALL ISSUED AS OF YET. *JB
GENERAL AMERITRAC TIRES-OEM TIRES ON MY 2004 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500 EXTENDED CAB, TWO WHEEL DRIVE, WITH 22,000 MILES HAVE TREAD SEPARATION. STEEL BELT UNDER TIRE TREAD IS VISIBLE. *NM

I HAVE A 2004 CHEVY SILVERADO. MY SPEEDOMETER STARTED GOING BAD AFTER 50K MILES (15K PAST WARRANTY) THE SPEEDOMETER DISPLAYS INACURRATE SPEEDS. DRIVING ON THE INTERSATE AT 70MPH, IT READS ANYWHERE FROM 0-15. SITTING AT RED LIGHTS IT STICKS AT 55 OR 40. I HAVE NO IDEAD HOW FAST I AM DRIVING AND I VIEW THIS AS A MAJOT SAFETY ISSUE. IF IT WERE A RARE THING I WOULD CONSIDER THIS A BAD APPLE, HOWEVER, THER ARE MANY MANY THOUSANDS OF OWNERS WHO HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. THERE IS CURRENTLY A LWASUIT IN WASHINGTON STATE PURSUING THIS ISSUE AND ONE IN OREGON WHICH IS TO FOLLOW. IF YOU LOOK AT MYCARSTATS SECTION ON GM WEBSITE, EVERY SINGLE COMPLAINT IN THE MISC SECTION IS ABOUT SPEEDOMETERS. HOW CAN THIS BE ALLOWED TO CONTINUE? WHY HAS A RECALL NOT BEEN ISSUED. I WISH SOMEON WOULD PLEASE EXPLAIN TO ME HOW A COMPANY SUCH AS GM IS ALLOWED TO GET AWAY WITH PUTTING FAULTY SAFETY EQUIPMENT IN VEHICLES. I COULD BELIEVE A QUIRCK ON AN ASSEMBLY LINE CASUING THIS MALFUNCTION IF IT WERE 10-50 VEHICLES BUT WERE ARE TALKING IN EXCESS OF 10,000 VEHICLES.

I OWN A 2004 CHEVY SILVERADO. ABOUT 2 YEARS AGO, MY INSTRUMENT PANEL QUIT WORKING. BECAUSE MY MILEAGE EXCEEDED THE NUMBER SET BY GM, GM WILL NOT HONOR THE RECALL ON 2003-2005 GM VEHICLES. MY WIFE HAS EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM. *CN
2004 SILVERADO DRIVEN BY MY SON EVERYDAY TO HIS CLASSES HAS A SPEEDOMETER PROBLEM. THE SPEEDOMETER DOES NOT WORK AT ALL. I HAVE HAD TROUBLE GETTING SOMEONE FROM PELTIER CHEVROLET TO CALL BE BACK AFTER LEAVING MESSAGES. THIS IS A DANGEROUS CONCERN. I NOTICED THAT THERE ARE RELATED COMPLAINTS ALREADY ON THIS SPEEDOMETER BUT SEEMS LIKE NOTHING IS BEING DONE ABOUT IT. I OWN A 2004 CHEVY SILVERADO Z71 4X4 WITH 5.3L V8. AT APPROXIMATELY 50K MILES I STARTED HAVING ERRATIC/INCORRECT SPEEDOMETER READINGS AND THE SPEEDOMETER STICKS AT VARYING LOCATIONS ON THE PANEL. I MUST GAGE SPEED BY USING THE TACHOMETER. I HAVEN'T ATTEMPTED TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM YET AS THE COST WILL BE 500.00 PLUS. *NM
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED AFTER TURNING THE IGNITION SWITCH TO THE OFF POSITION, THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO RUN. THE BATTERY CABLES AND THE FUSES WERE PULLED AND THE ENGINE CONTINUED RUNNING FOR ANOTHER 45 MINUTES. AS THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN TO THE DEALER THE TRANSMISSION WOULD NOT SHIFT OUT OF THIRD GEAR AND THE DASHBOARD LIGHTS ILLUMINATED. THE DEALER DETERMINED THE PROBLEM WAS IN THE IGNITION SWITCH AND THE SWITCH WAS REPLACED. UPDATED 10/30/2006 - *NM
I HAVE A 2004 SILVERADO S71. IT HAS 35K MILES ON IT AT THIS TIME. IN SEPT. OF 2006 I NOTICED THAT THE SPEEDOMETER WAS NOT RETURNING TO ZERO MPH SMOOTHLY. IT WOULD DROP IN STEPS. IT IS NOT INDICATING THE CORRECT SPEED, SOMETIMES IT IS HIGH AND OTHER TIMES IT MAYBE LOW OR NOT WORKING AT ALL. NOW THE TACH IS ALSO ACTING ERRATIC. SOMETIMES IT WORKS AND OTHER TIMES IT DOESN'T, AT TIMES IT DOES NOT RETURN TO ZERO WHEN THE ENGINE IS TURNED OFF OR IT HANGS AT SOME ARBITRARY POINT. (1) EVENTS LEADING UP TO THE FAILURE - NONE. (2) FAILURE AND ITS CONSEQUENCES - RECEIVED SPEEDING TICKET. (3) WHAT WAS DONE TO CORRECT THE FAILURE; I.E, PARTS REPAIRED OR REPLACED (AND IF OLD PART IS AVAILABLE) . - NONE AT THIS TIME. *NM
THE BRAKES ON MY 2004 SILVERADO K1500 ARE VERY POOR. I HAVE HAD IT IN 3 TIMES, BUT EACH TIME I HAVE BEEN TOLD THE BRAKES ARE FINE. THE 3RD TIME IN THEY TOLD ME THE BRAKES WERE IN GM SPECS, BUT THEN TOLD ME HOW TO FIX THEM. THAT TELLS ME THERE IS A PROBLEM AND THEY ARE IGNORING IT. *JB

THE SPEEDOMETER WOULD INDICATE THAT THE VEHICLE WAS TRAVELING 35 MPH WHEN IT WAS IDLE. THE DEALER STATED THAT THERE WAS A DEFECT WITH THE ELECTRONIC SPEEDOMETERS. THE DEALER DID NOT PERFORM THE REPAIR. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THE REAR DOOR LOCKS ARE INOPERABLE. THE DEALER HAS INSPECTED THE VEHICLE. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT MILEAGE IS 53,500 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 47,000.
