NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2016 Chevrolet Silverado. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
Rear defroster where power sliding window meets started smoking while defroster was in use. Reference TSB# n192265660 rear window defroster thermal events . This is a replica of that issue, but have thus far been told by GM corporate that vehicle is not eligible under the released customer satisfaction program.
I was trying to stop in reverse, no pedal on braking...put in drive it had pedal and a light came on in dash to " service brake assist"
The reduced power indicator comes on. The code for this has been p2138 and it keeps saying it’s the pedal and I’ve replaced it twice and it seems to still come out. Looking over the internet it seems that this case has been experienced by so many people. GM needs to take responsibility and fix this problem with not only my vehicle but future ones as well. After this experience I’m really not sure I would want to continue purchasing GMs anymore. You need to have a recall on this issue and have it fixed.
The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that on several occasions while driving at slow speeds, the transmission shifted hard and jerked from the rear. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the transmission value body and wiring harness needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 50,000.
The transmission failed prematurely (just over 95,000 miles). Before i had it rebuilt, It was lurching forward as I was coming to a stop. It also had trouble switching gears (very rough) and a loss of power. I understand this transmission is part of a class action lawsuit. I wanted to make sure my experience was documented with the other cases. General Motors needs to correct this problem and reimburse owners for work already completed. I will dig up my transmission repair documentation and include it with this record. Thank you, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
I have tooken my 2016 Silverado 5.3 that I bought brand new 4 times to get fixed for a brake recall, it is still not fixed even though in their records it’s fixed, I have had several near misses but I am always ready with the e brake. The brakes get super hard out of no where and I can’t brake at all. Recently I hit 2 vehicles because of this recall. I was backing out of my home and when I tried to brake I hit a car parked in the side of the road, if they would’ve been in the car I would’ve killed the owner of the vehicle for sure. I put it in drive to get out of her car and the brake didn’t work again and crashed into the vehicle in front of me again because of the brake recall. I was injured both time and I am paying for these peoples cars and other stuff. I have been talking to several lawyers just haven’t decided which one I am going to go with. I am scared for my life to drive that truck now and it is sacred to me and my family as my dad died from COVID and it was his truck
1. The brake vacuum failed. 2. Mine and other drivers safety was put at risk because the vehicle was unable to come to a complete stop even when brake pedal was fully engaged. 3. The problem has been since fixed by a mechanic, before we knew of a previous recall on this particular issue. 4. There were no warnings displayed.
The trailer brake system dings on the dash board constantly, causing the brakes to malfunction and studder which is causing an increased risk of for safety incidents to happen.
2/18/22- Sanborn Chevy in Lodi, CA Vehicle was towed in for transmission concern found that the transmission pump was whining found 4th thru 6th gear slipping. Dealership had to replace transmission. Upon talking to dealership informed me that they have been replacing a lot of 2015-2016 transmission with the same concern. I did contact GM Corp told me nothing they could do ... Repair order # 26319 the amount paid was $4559.65 Would like this to be investagated for transmission concerns
"Trailer Brake System" (TBS) warning indicator malfunction. Out of nowhere the TBS warning message and chime started malfunctioning. The malfunction is irregular and often so frequent the vehicle is un-drivable. The rapid warning display and chime is very distracting and presents a very significant distraction resulting in unsafe operation of the vehicle. I have multiple videos of the malfunction, ranging from and occasional chime to a constant chime. Unfortunately they are too large to upload.
This morning I turned on my rear defrost, and the rear window shattered. There is a memo entitled "GLOBAL SAFETY FIELD INVESTIGATIONS DCS5273 / N192265660". However, when I contacted GM this afternoon (800-630-2438) they had not heard of this memo.
My vehicle has a very good service record. The transmission failed and had to be replaced at 93,800 miles. My research has revealed this is a common problem with this make/model. The transmission has been replaced and I have filed a claim with GMC. I do not have an extended warranty. However, this appears to be a common problem.
Radiator leaking coolant from the driver side. Vehicle has only 80,000 miles. A/C condenser also leaking driver side crack in condenser. Known issue by Chevy and no recalls have been made.
At lower speeds the brake pedal become stiff making it extremely difficult to stop. Sometimes the antilock breaks will kick in to help, but sometimes that doesn't even stop the truck. On several occasions I have nearly hit other cars because the brakes fail to engage. On one occasion when parking in a multi story parking garage, the truck almost plowed through the side barrier because it wouldn't stop. The brakes also fail when going in reverse at low speeds. It appears that the brake assist vacuum pump is failing as has been reported by a number of other complaints. The brake pads and rotors are all in good shape and the truck has only 68,000 miles.
At around 80,000 my transmission in my truck started given me problems. I now have to replace the entire transmission. I am the only owner of my truck. One pays a lot of money for a brand new truck only to have to pay $6,000 for a new transmission.
Braking ability significantly decreases when in reverse and also sometimes when traveling at very low speeds like pulling into the driveway or into a parking spot. The brake will be fully applied, and vehicle will continue to move. This can cause a very dangerous collision and potentially cause death or serious injury to the vehicle passengers and/or passengers of vehicles encountered. The 'service brake assist' indicator will light up on the dash at times, other times there is no warning light when it happens. I bought this vehicle a little less than 30 days ago (on 12/20/2021) and have had this happen to me multiple times. I have not had it to the dealer yet, but have an appointment set to have it looked at. My father (a diesel mechanic) seems to think it is due to vacuum loss of the brakes. The vehicle can be available for inspection upon request.
The fuel filler injection port retaining clip became overly worn down & broke with minimal use, thus not holding the fuel spout in its proper place causing it to malfunction. No warning lights. Fuel spout is very loose & could come loose & cause disasters from: personnel injury/death, inhalation from toxic fumes, environmental disasters, etc. The fuel tank was completely replaced in 2016 right after purchase.
While driving slowly in parking lot, lost braking. I had minimal braking for the next 5 minutes. Message on dashboard said SERVICE BRAKE ASSIST. Which indicates a problem with the brake boost assist system. Further investigation indicates a re-programing of the braking software may be needed. i would like to see this issue of re-programing the braking software a re-call on my 2106 truck. Ref: NHTSA - 19V645 & 20V603
I was driving down the road when it sounded like a firearm was discharged in the cab of my truck . I look in the rear view mirror and see the driver's side of the rear window has blown outward. It is a headed glass and the heater, for the glass, was on at the time.
The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that while driving at 10 MPH, the brakes intermittently failed, and the brake pedal was stiff. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. The independent mechanic did not diagnose or repair the vehicle. The dealer was made aware of the failure and scheduled an upcoming appointment. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 145,000.
Loss of brakes at low speeds, may require pumping of brakes. Had an update performed and thought bit was corrected. Have experienced it 4 or 5 times since. Vehicle continues to roll a few feet before stopping. Corrects itself after restart of vehicle.
I have a hard brake pedal at low or idle speeds. First noticed it while trying to park in a parking deck while on vacation. I almost ran into the wall. I looked online for the cause and noticed there is a recall for this issue for our year truck. I contacted the closest dealer but they informed me that my vin number did not pull up the recall. We have a "Texas" edition. I'm wondering if this edition has the same vacuum brake assist pump being recalled but has not been reported.
While sitting in a parking lot with the rear defrost on, the rear window shattered. There were no visible impact marks. My child was covered in small glass shards. I drove home and will be contacting my insurance company shortly.
Hard brakes. If I press on the brake peddle 2-3 times while making a stop the peddle becomes stiff and difficult. ABS kicks in. Truck was taken into the servicing dealership under the recall but was told there was no problem. It has continued ever since. So is this still under the recall or am I on my own?
The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated while driving approximately 5 MPH, the rear windshield exploded without warning. The vehicle was not taken to a local mechanic. The manufacturer was informed of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle was not included in a recall. The failure mileage was approximately 43,205.
I have a 2016 chevy silveradi 1550 LT crew cab when you r driving and apply the brakes they get soft and it's hard to stop and gonna cause a accident the brakes go like into anti lock system and hard to come to a stop .already replaced brakes and rotors no help .and the transmission in the truck is slipping and had all service done now in garage cause the torque convertor is going machenic said cause of the cheap material gm is using this is a big health concern .and makes your rpm go up and get like the tranny is slipping no early sign just boom stuck along the highway .transmission only has 98000 on it .something needs to b done about this before alot of people get hurt
Brakes fail at low speed. I have seen numerous reports of this problem dating back to 2018 and nothing seems to be happening with a recall. This is a very danger problem that needs to be addressed immediately. GM service confirmed there is no recall on this common problem. Although there has been no accident, it has been close and pedestrians are at particular risk.
Atmospheric temperature, 33 degrees F. Windows slightly frosted. Remote started vehicle and cleared side and front windshield of frost. Entered vehicle, inserted keys and drove approximately 300 ft to drop off mail. While sitting in the vehicle and the vehicle was in park, and running. I heard a very load pop and and observed left side window had shattered. This is the driver side rear window, left side looking from rear of vehicle. The window was bowed out slightly and some loose pieces of glass were observed. This occurred approximately 3 minutes after the initial start of the vehicle. No other damage observed. This vehicle had been previously subject to a recall regarding the powered rear window defroster circuit. The dealer corrected this recall on February 7, 2020.
Driver complains of fuel leak. Leak at fuel pump. Upon inspection found fuel pump outlet port cracked and leaking. Replaced fuel pump to correct.
The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that while the vehicle was in for routine service, it was discovered that anti-freeze had leaked from the radiator. The radiator and thermostat were replaced, and the failure was remedied. The contact indicated that prior to the repair the thermostat would occasionally over cycle. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 84,204.
There are two problems occuring that seem to be common with this vehicle. First the lifters in the engine have gone bad. Second, there is severe jerking and delays with the transmission going into gear.
The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado HD Crew. The contact stated while driving approximately at 55 mph when the vehicles in front of the contact began to stop abruptly which resulted in the contact crashing the vehicle into another vehicle. The air bags did not deploy. A police report was taken and 2 persons in the contact's vehicle sustained injuries; i.e contact's wife who was a passenger sustained a sprain on the right wrist and right ankle, and whiplash, pain in the right shoulder and neck. The contact sustained pain in the right shoulder and neck. They did not seek medical treatment until a couple of days post-accident. The vehicle was towed to an insurance lot and was awaiting diagnosis. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 34,545.
At 81,000 miles truck started having a transmission shutter at 25 MPH and 45-65 MPH when transmission is at normal temp. Took truck to the dealership and being told I need a new transmission for $5,000.00. There are many documented transmission issues with Chevrolets. Why is nothing being done to help the customers???
Intermittent reduction in braking power while performing parking maneuvers (parallel parking). Feels like loss of power brakes requiring very heavy force to stop vehicle - very unnerving. Vehicle was taken to dealership for inspection and dealer replaced brake pads and rotors on front & back. Dealer claims issue is unrelated to recall 19V645 & 20V603 but I suspect it is as symptoms are identical.
Driver complained of fuel smell. Found fuel leaking at fuel tank. Lower fuel tank to inspect. Upon inspection found fuel port outlet port cracked and leaking. Replaced fuel pump to correct.
82000 miles, hard shifting and jerking. 83000 miles truck will hardly go into gear.
2016 Chevrolet Silverado LT Crew Cab Standard Box A/C Condenser (GM Part Number 84802253) cracked at weld and failed at approximately 63,000 miles, resulting in refrigerant leaking to atmosphere and loss of cooling. The affected component is very similar to the TSB 17336 from GM on like vehicles. There were no warnings or indicators that signaled that this component had failed. Owner located weld failure independently.
THE MYLINK INFOTAINMENT SYSTEMS KEEP GLITCHING CHANGING ON IT OWN. GMC HAS THIS PROBLEMS WITH SEVERAL MODELS OF THIER CARS WITH THE MYLINK SYSTEM IN IT OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS AND THERE HAS NOT BEEN A SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM. THEY EITHER NEED TO CHANGE THE SYSTEM TO A NEWER UPDATED MODEL OR COME UP WITH A SOLUTION.
Driver complained of fuel smell behind cab. Fuel leak on top of tank. Inspected and found fuel pump outlet port cracked and leaking. Replaced fuel pump to correct leak.
Transmission Failure. Truck starts to jerk violently.
The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that when the vehicle was started, the air conditioner was engaged but failed to produce cold air. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the condenser had failed and needed to be replaced. The contact stated the vehicle was not repaired. The dealer and manufacturer were not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 74,000.
I have a 2016 Silverado which was purchased new, the vehicle has now 35K miles. Recently the radio display which contains the intelink and other adaptive controls began randomly going through multiple screens on my dashboard, and touch screen radio screen including digital speedometer turning off and going to random music stations, the radio flickering as if searching for different signals , and going through different screens, blue tooth, ac, radio volume going extremely loud, driver info screen going blank , etc... causing a horrible distraction , and will not turn off a search on the internet shows multiple GM vehicles for the years 2016-2020 with the same problem I have contacted local dealer who states car is not under warranty anymore. This is definitely a safety issue on this vehicle and I would like to report this to the NHTSI
The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that while driving at 35-45 mph, the vehicle would jerk forward, then decelerate, and jerk forward again. The vehicle was awaiting diagnosis by an independent mechanic. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 89,000.
I am writing in concern to a brake pump malfunction and air bag sensor failure. The vehicle is available for inspection and has been inspected/confirmed by dealerships. The brake pump is bad and falls under the recall by GM but because it was over the mileage threshold, it didn’t qualify. The brakes don’t work well at all. The air bag sensor in the passenger seat went bad and now shut off all my airbags and GM won’t add my vehicle to the recalls they have already issued on other vehicles for the same issues. My safety is at risk with my lack of air bags for us. Others’ safety is risk due to the bad brake pump that I cannot guarantee will continue working, especially upon an immediate need to brake in any emergency situation. I have contact the manufacturer 2 separate times and they refuse to include my vehicle in their safety recalls. This is a serious matter. Someone could get hurt or worse. I had no warnings or indications that these were issues until they became one. I had to get quotes of $1200 to get these two issues resolved and don’t understand how this is a known problem but they refuse to help me in any way. I’m not asking for a replacement truck or engine. Just functioning safety features!!! The truck is only 5 years old.
Operator complained of fuel smell. Found traces of fuel on center of fuel tank. Lower fuel tank for inspection and found fuel leaking from fuel pump port. Replaced fuel pump to correct. The same failure has happened and is still happening. All fuel pumps fail the same area. A list of the VINs and date of failure. The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that while driving approximately 75 mph, the message "power steering fault drive careful" suddenly displayed and the steering wheel became firm and was more difficult to turn in either direction. After restarting the vehicle, the failure was remedied but recurred moments later. The vehicle was taken to an unknown dealer who diagnosed that the steering rack was faulty and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 40,000.
Engine overheating when pulling a trailer uphill. A simular problem also occurred with the transmission fluid reaching 212 degrees. Both incidents did occur on a hot days in California. Responded by turning on the heat in the summer time which solved the temporary engine overheating problem. Engine coolant was at the proper level and had not exceeded the manufactures 5 year 50,000 mile life time. This despite the truck being sold specifically rated for trailer towing with me neither overloading, exceeding tow rating or exceeding 55 mph. When this occurred.
Driver seat belt will not click in rendering the seat belt unusable.
The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that while coming to a stop and depressing the brake pedal, the vehicle started to lose motive power. The vehicle lost motive power and the steering wheel seized. The contact stated that after several seconds the vehicle regained motive power. The failure recurred approximately 5-6 times. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer who was unable to identify the cause of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 83,000.
1) Brake system, yes. 2) The vehicle did not stop when the brake pedal was depressed (known issue with GM). 3) Yes, GM provided an independent investigator and confirmed the brake system failure. 4) Yes. 5) No. On May 29, 2021, at approximately 9:35 AM, I was traveling Northbound on Interstate 5 and exiting the freeway on Highway 46. As I exited the freeway, there was slow moving traffic, I began to brake and experienced no braking at all and the ABS kicked in. At that time, I was traveling at approximately 10 miles an hour when the impact accorded with the vehicle in front of me.
