I HAVE BEEN DEALING WITH THIS PROBLEM WITH THE ABS SYSTEM FOR OVER 2 YEARS AND HAVE REPLACED ALL THE SENSORS BRAKES AND HUBS ON MY SUBURBAN, I HAVE BEEN READING ALL THE CUSTOMER COMPLAINTS AND CHEVY IS WELL AWARE OF THIS ISSUE.MY ABS SYSTEM RUNS WHEN IT WANTS PREVENTS MY CAR FROM PROPERLY STOPPING AND WHEN I REPORTED THE ISSUE THEY TOLD ME TO PULL THE FUSE SO THE PUMP WOULD SHUT OFF, SO I AM DRIVING AROUND WITH NO ABS SYSTEM AND WE JUST HAD THE SENSORS REPLACED AGAIN AS WELL AS THE HUB AND THE SAME THING IS HAPPENING WITH THE PULSATING OF THE BREAK PEDDLE AND THE RUNNING PUMP I WOULD THINK CHEVY WOULD DO A RECALL WITH ALL THE COMPLAINTS.. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 CHEVROLET SUBURBAN 1500. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 20 MPH SHE ATTEMPTED TO BRAKE AT AN INTERSECTION AND HEARD A CRANKING NOISE BEFORE THE BRAKES FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A DEALER WHO DIAGNOSE THAT THERE WAS RUST DAMAGE ON THE BRAKE LINES. AS A RESULT, FRONT BREAK LINES NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THREE MONTHS LATER THE REAR BRAKES FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER WHO STATED THAT THE RUST DAMAGE WAS EXTENSIVE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 177,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 179,000. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 CHEVROLET SUBURBAN. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE STALLED WHILE DRIVING BETWEEN 30-60 MPH. A CHARGING LIGHT ALSO ILLUMINATED AS THE VEHICLE STALLED. THE CONTACT COASTED TO A STOP AND WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE THE CRANK SHAFT POSITION SENSOR WAS REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 85,000. .UPDATED 06/18/12 *BF THE CONSUMER STATED WHEN THE ENGINE STOPPED, THERE WAS NO POWER STEERING AND ONLY ONE POWER ASSISTED BRAKE APPLICATION, WHICH ALMOST RESULTED IN AN ACCIDENT. THE ABS LIGHT CAME ON. WHEN THE CAR WAS TURNED OFF, A PUMP OR SOMETHING KEPT RUNNING AND THE SOUND SEEMED TO BE COMING FORM UNDER THE VEHICLE. THE SOUND DID NOT CEASE EVEN WHEN THE CAR WAS TURNED OFF AND THE KEY REMOVED. THIS CONTINUED UNTIL I CHECKED THE FUSES AND TRIED DISCONNECTING THE ABS 60-AMP FUSE FROM THE FUSE BOX UNDER THE HOOD. THE FUSE WAS FINE, HOWEVER WHEN I DISCONNECTED THE FUSE, THE SOUND IMMEDIATELY STOPPED. I RECONNECTED THE FUSE BRIEFLY AND THE SOUND RESUMED, SO I LEFT THE FUSE DISCONNECTED UNTIL A REPAIR CAN BE MAID. *TR
MY WIFE WAS DRIVING OUR 2002 CHEVROLET SUBURBAN 1500 4WD WHEN SHE APPLIED THE BRAKES TO STOP THE PEDDLE WENT ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR. SHE WAS ABLE TO GET THE TRUCK INTO A PARKING LOT WITHOUT INCIDENT. WHEN I GOT THERE TO LOOK AT THE PROBLEM, I NOTICED THE STEEL BRAKE LINE SUPPLYING THE RIGHT FRONT CALIPER WAS SEVERELY CORRODED, WHERE IT RUNS ATOP THE FRAME IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT, TO THE POINT WHERE IT DEVELOPED A PINHOLE TO ALLOW A LOSS OF PRESSURE(PEDDLE). THE LINE IS SO CORRODED THAT I CAN'T EVEN CUT OUT A SECTION AND FLARE THE OLD LINE TO INSTALL A REPAIR SECTION OF LINE. I BELIEVE THE ENTIRE BRAKE LINE HAS TO BE REPLACED. AT THIS TIME I HAVEN'T INSPECTED THE REST OF THE LINES, BUT WHEN I CAN I WILL!!!!! I'M READING ABOUT NUMEROUS BRAKE LINE AND OTHER SEVERE CORROSION ISSUES ON THESE MODELS. WE HAVE BEEN LOYAL GM CUSTOMERS SINCE 1976. WE CURRENTLY OWN THE ABOVE MENTIONED SUBURBAN AND A 2008 SILVERADO. THE SUBURBAN IS OUR PRIMARY FAMILY VEHICLE WHICH IS USED TO TRANSPORT OUR DISABLED CHILD. *TR
AFTER SO LONG IGNORING THE SMELL IN MY CAB, I DECIDED TO GET IT CHECKED OUT AT BENNY'S EXHAUST IN BRISTOL, TN, AND FOUND THAT EXHAUST MANIFOLD HEAD BOLTS BROKE OFF ON BOTH SIDES OF ENGINE. 1ST BOLT INITIALLY THEN SECOND BOLT NEXT TO IT BROKE AS WELL. NO WORK HAS BEEN DONE TO MOTOR OR AFTERMARKET PARTS ADDED THAT WOULD AFFECT THIS PART AND CREATE FAILURE. EXHAUST GAS ENTERS THE UNDERHOOD AREA SOMETIME CAN BE SMELLED INSIDE PASSENGER CAB AREA. THE EXHAUST MAKES A BLACK PLUME UP SIDE OF MOTOR ON BOTH SIDES. THIS VEHICLE CAN NOT BE REGISTERED IN ANY STATE THAT HAS EMISSIONS TESTING, BECAUSE IT WILL NOT PASS. I AM FORCED TO REGISTER IT TO NON-TESTING STATES. WHY ISN'T THERE A RECALL ON THIS MATTER. IT APPEARS THAT THIS AFFECTS ALL YEARS. WHAT IS WRONG WITH GM, WHY WON'T THEY TAKE CARE OF THIS MATTER. AFTER SOMEONE SPENDS SEVERAL TENS OF THOUSANDS ON A VEHICLE, WHY ISN'T SAFETY THE STANDARD GM SHOULD MEASURE ITSELF UP TOO. ENGINEERS, ARE YOU MAKING SURE PLANNED OBSOLESCENCE IS BUILT INTO ALL YOUR VEHICLES. I WON'T BUY GM NO MORE AFTER OWNING GM ALL MY LIFE. *TR
WE WENT ON A FISHING TRIP FROM WILSON, NC TO NEW PORT NEWS. I DROVE ALL THE WAY THERE WITH NO PROBLEM. WE ARRIVED AT THE JAMES RIVER BRIDGE AND MY TRUCK CUT OFF. IT CRUNK UP AND ROLLED A LITTLE THEN DIED AGAIN. IT TOOK ME 25 MINUTES TO PARK. I HAD TO WAIT UNTIL IT DECIDED TO STAY ON. WE FISHED THEN WE LEFT THE NEXT MORNING. MY TRUCK DROVE GOOD WITH NO PROBLEM. IT NORMALLY TAKES US 2 HRS. TO GET BACK HOME. MY TRUCK STARED CUTTING OFF AGAIN WHEN WE GOT 40 MILES FROM HOME. IT TOOK 4 1/2 HRS. TO GET HOME FROM 40 MILES AWAY. IT WAS SO HOT. MY FAMILY HAD TO WAIT ALONG A HOT, LONG, LONELY HIGHWAY. IT STARTED CUTTING OFF MORE. I HAD THE FUEL PUMP CHANGED AND ALSO THE FILTER. IT HASN'T CUT OFF TODAY BUT THE ENGINE LIGHT HAS COME BACK ON. IT'S BEEN 3 DAYS SINCE THOSE PARTS WAS REPLACED. I DON'T KNOW WHY MY SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT IS BACK ON. IT WAS OFF BEFORE IT STARTED CUTTING OFF. NOW IT STAYS ON AND NEVER GOES OFF. *TR
THE BRAKES WENT OUT DUE TO A CORRODED FITTING, WHILE BACKING A BOAT TRAILER/BOAT INTO THE WATER. SO NO BRAKES, USED EMERGENCY BRAKE TO STOP. VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A GARAGE AND THE BRAKE LINE FITTING WAS REPAIRED. ON NOVEMBER 10, 2014 THE BRAKES WENT OUT AGAIN WHILE DRIVING IT. AGAIN A CORRODED FITTING. NO ACCIDENTS BUT RESULTED IN VEHICLE BEING TOWED AND NOW AN EXPENSIVE FIX TO REPLACE ALL BRAKE LINES. *TR
BRAKES FAILED COMPLETELY.... BRAKE PEDAL WENT ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR AFTER PULLING INTO A PARKING LOT AND TRYING TO SLOW DOWN TO PULL INTO A SPOT. ATTEMPTED TO PUMP BRAKES BUT THE PEDAL DID NOT COME BACK UP. HIT CURB AT APPROXIMATELY 10 MPH. TRUCK NEEDED TO TOWED AND MECHANIC FOUND TROUBLE TO BE A BADLY RUSTED THROUGH MAIN FRONT TO REAR BRAKE LINES. MECHANIC FOUND ALL LINES TO BE RUSTED AND REPLACED ALL LINES WITH POLY COATED STEEL LINES. MECHANIC STATED THAT THE FACTORY BRAKE LINES WERE NOT COATED...? IS THIS NOT A FACTORY RECALL ISSUE? *TR
EXHAUST MANIFOLD BOLTS BREAKING LEAVING STUDS IN THE HEADS, HEATING UP ENGINE COMPARTMENTS, RELEASES CARBON MONOXIDE, AFFECTS O2 SENSOR AND CATALYTIC CONVERTER. WILL NOT PASS EMISSIONS IN SOME STATES. GM NOT STANDING BEHIND THIS 1999-2008 ISSUE. IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND IS EXPENSIVE TO FIX. GM MECHANICS DENYING ANY SUCH ISSUES. PLEASE CHECK- IN TO THIS. MICHELIN TIRES SIZE 265/70/15 ARE CRACKING ON THE SIDE WALL AREA ALSO TREAD IS COMING OFF TIRES,I DID PURCHASED THE TIRES FROM COSTCO FIVE YEARS AGO ,BUT THE TIRES HAVE LESS THAN FORTY THOUSAND MILES ON THEM,COSTCO REFUSED TO ROTATE OR WORK ON THEM,THE TIRES ORIGINAL WARRANTY WAS FOR SIXTY FIVE THOUSAND I DON'T THINK THE TIRES ARE SAFE TO DRIVE ANY MORE. *TR
I WAS NEARING A STOP SIGN AT AN INTERSECTION AND APPLIED BRAKES. PEDAL WENT TO FLOOR AND I WENT THROUGH INTERSECTION. ONCOMING VEHICLE HAD TO SWERVE TO MISS ME. INVESTIGATION DETERMINED THAT A FRONT BRAKE LINE HAD RUSTED THROUGH, CAUSING LOSS OF BRAKE FLUID. *TR
THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM ACTIVATED INCORRECTLY AT LOW SPEED ON A STEEP HILL SUCH THAT THE VEHICLE ROLLED INTO THE CROSS STREET WITHOUT STOPPING. VEHICLE WAS IN VERMONT FOR 4 YEARS PRIOR TO THE INCIDENT. *TR
LEFT-SIDE ENGINE MANIFOLD BOLTS BROKE OFF, CAUSING EXHAUST GAS TO ESCAPE INTO THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE FIREWALL FROM THE DRIVER. THE ESCAPING EXHAUST CAUSES A 'TICKING' NOISE, WHICH IS WHAT BROUGHT THIS TO THE ATTENTION OF THE OWNER (ME). THE VEHICLE IS WELL-MAINTAINED AND IS NEVER USED IN HARSH OR DEMANDING CONDITIONS. PRIMARY USE IS TRANSPORTING FAMILY IN URBAN AREA. THERE HAS BEEN NO PRIOR SERVICE WORK THAT REQUIRED MANIFOLD TO BE REMOVED. THE MANIFOLD BOLTS ARE DEFECTIVE. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY AND EPA ISSUE DUE TO EXHAUST GASES BEING RELEASED IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT, AND THE POSSIBILITY OF THE HEAT FROM THE EXHAUST NEGATIVELY AFFECTING SENSORS AND OTHER VITAL ENGINE COMPONENTS. *TR
BEGAN EMERGENCY BREAKING AND EVASIVE MANEUVERS. SHORTLY AFTER BEGINNING TO TURN, THE ABS LIGHT CAME ON AND ALL 4 WHEELS LOCKED. THE RESULT WAS A 180 DEGREE SPIN ACROSS 5 LANES OF I30 JUST SOUTH OF DOWNTOWN DALLAS. WE ALMOST AVOIDED ANY COLLISION, BUT IT COULD HAVE BEEN HORRIBLE AS WE WERE CLOSE TO HITTING AT LEAST 7 TO 10 VEHICLES WITH SPEED DIFFERENTIALS OF ABOUT 50MPH WHILE OUT OF CONTROL. THE FAILURE CODE WAS THE EBCM RELAY, AND THE SYSTEM WORKS IF THE AMBIENT TEMPERATURE IS COLD ENOUGH, THOUGH IT FAILS ON BUMPS SOMETIME. TYPICAL BAD SOLDER JOINT BEHAVIOR. MANY PEOPLE ARE REPAIRING THESE MODULES BY RE-SOLDERING THE RELAY CONNECTIONS. *JS
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 CHEVROLET SUBURBAN. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 10 MPH, THERE WAS A VERY LOUD NOISE COMING FROM THE REAR. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE SWAY BAR LINK WAS FRACTURED AND NEEDED TO BE WELDED BACK TOGETHER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE WHO DID NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 49,000.
BRAKE FAILURE, ABS KICKS IN UNDER 5 MPH. LOST BRAKES ONCE. UPON REVIEWING THIS TOPIC ON THE BELOW WEBLINK, FOUND OUT I AND A MULTITUDE OF OTHER CHEVY TRUCK OWNERS HAVE IDENTICAL ISSUES. BASED ON READING THE BELOW LINK, I'M FEARFUL OF LETTING MY WIFE/KIDS IN THIS VEHICLE THAT A POSSIBLE CAR ACCIDENT MAY HAPPEN IF THE BRAKES DON'T WORK WHEN NEEDED. PLEASE INVESTIGATE THIS, I AND MANY OTHERS PAID A SUBSTANTIAL AMOUNT OF MONEY FOR PRODUCTS THAT ARE DEFECTIVE/LIFE THREATENING AND CHEVY REFUSES TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE ATTEMPTING TO PARK WITH THE TRAILER ATTACHED TO THE VEHICLE, THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED TO THE FLOORBOARD AND THE EMERGENCY BRAKE ALSO FAILED. HARD BRAKE LINES FAILED, RESULTING IN LOSS OF HYDRAULIC PRESSURE FOR SERVICE BRAKES. *TR
I OWN A 2002 CHEVROLET SUBURBAN WHICH WHEN BRAKING AT LOW SPEEDS THE PEDAL DROPS NEAR THE FLOOR AND THE ABS CAUSES IT TO KICK BACK AND PULSATE THIS HAPPENS ON AN INTERMITTENT BASIS CAUSING GREATLY INCREASED STOPPING DISTANCES. THESE SYMPTOMS ARE CONSISTENT WITH A RECALL WHERE THEY SPRAYED ANTI CORROSION STUFF ON AN ABS SPEED SENSOR AS A FIX. THIS RECALL WAS PERFORMED ON MY VEHICLE 3 YEARS AGO AT 40K MILES NOW I AM EXPERIENCING THE SAME PROBLEM AGAIN @ 78K MILES AND GM SAYS THEY ARE NOT OBLIGATED TO PERFORM IT AGAIN OR COME UP WITH A MORE PERMANENT FIX. *KB
WHILE PARKING A TRAVEL TRAILER INTO A STEEPLY-SLOPED DRIVEWAY AFTER A 300-MILE TOW WITH THE WHOLE FAMILY ABOARD, NOTICED THE BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL WAS UNCOMMONLY LONG. FOLLOWING DAY, DEPARTED WITHOUT THE TRAILER FOR A SHORT DRIVE AND AGAIN NOTICED A LOW PEDAL. DROVE ABOUT THREE MILES WITH EXTREME CAUTION, AND ON ARRIVAL FOUND BRAKE FLUID FLOWING FROM BEHIND THE DRIVER'S-SIDE ROCKER PANEL. SLOWLY NURSED THE TRUCK TO THE LOCAL DEALER; DURING THIS DRIVE THE BRAKE ALARM LIGHT ILLUMINATED. NO COLLISION OR INJURY IN THIS CASE. BRAKE PIPES WERE FOUND TO BE ALL DEEPLY CORRODED AND BREACHED; ELECTED TO REPLACE ALL AT A COST OF $1130. SUBMITTED AS A CASE IN EA11001: VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED IN NOV 2001 IN NORTHERN VIRGINIA, WHICH IS PROPERLY INCLUDED IN THE SALT BELT WITH WEST VIRGINIA AND DC/MARYLAND, AND HAS BEEN IN NEW JERSEY FOR THE PAST FOUR YEARS. *KB
2002 SUBURBAN JUST STOPS WHILE DRIVING, NO WARNING NO LIGHTS ON THE DASH OR NOTHING IT JUST STOPS. AT DIFFERENT SPEEDS. CHANGED INJECTORS FUEL FILTER PUMP AND STILL THE SAME PROBLEM EVEN CHANGED THE FLEX FUEL SENSOR. SOME ONE WILL DIE BECAUSE OF THIS IN THE FUTURE IF THEY HAVEN'T DONE SO YET. I HAVE RESEARCHED THIS ON THE INTERNET AND A LARGE NUMBER OF PEOPLE ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM. MAYBE ITS A COMMUTER PROBLEM OR SOMETHING ELSE BUT IT NEEDS TO BE LOOKED AT SOON. THANK YOU *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 CHEVROLET SUBURBAN 2500. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH WHEN THE ENGINE STALLED, FOLLOWED BY THE BATTERY WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATION. THE FAILURE OCCURRED EIGHT MORE TIMES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO WAS UNABLE TO LOCATE A PROBLEM. IN ADDITION, THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR A DIAGNOSTIC TESTING WHICH DETECTED A TROUBLE CODE WITH THE CRANK POSITION SENSOR. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THERE WAS A RECALL RELATED TO THE DEFECT UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 07V521000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING). THE CONTACT NOTIFIED THE DEALER CONCERNING THE RECALL. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 70,000. UPDATED 09/21/11*LJ THE CONSUMER STATED AFTER WAITING 15-30 SECONDS, THE ENGINE WOULD START IMMEDIATELY AND RUN SMOOTHLY. UPDATED 10/26/11
BRAKES FAILED PREMATURELY DUE TO RUSTING BRAKES LINES FROM MASTER CYLINDER WITHOUT WARNING ON I-94.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 CHEVROLET SUBURBAN 1500. THE CONTACT STATED THE BRAKES ARE FAILING DUE TO THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM. WHENEVER THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED THE ABS VIBRATED EXCESSIVELY CAUSING THE OCCUPANT TO APPLY MORE PRESSURE TO THE BRAKES IN ORDER TO STOP THE VEHICLE. NHTSA RECALL CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 05V379000, SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC: ANTI-LOCK WAS RELATED TO THE FAILURE WHICH WAS REPAIRED BY THE DEALER. THE DEALER REMOVED THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR AND THOROUGHLY CLEANED THE SENSOR MOUNTING SURFACE ON THE WHEEL BEARINGS, APPLIED RUST INHIBITOR AND GREASED THE MOUNTING SURFACE. THE MANUFACTURER ADVISED HER THAT SINCE THE RECALL REPAIR WAS PERFORMED THEY ARE NOT OBLIGATED TO REPAIR IT A SECOND TIME. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 160,000. UPDATED 07/21/11 *BF THE CONSUMER STATED THE RECALL WAS PERFORMED BY THE DEALERSHIP IN 2005 WITHOUT HER CONSENT. THERE WERE NO PROBLEMS WITH THE ABS UNTIL 2011. THE ABS WOULD ENGAGE WHEN IT WAS NOT NECESSARY. THE INITIAL RECALL HAS NOT BEEN FIXED. UPDATED 07/29/11
