NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2017 Chevrolet Suburban. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
I was driving in [XXX] on 1604 and the car was driving fine and out of nowhere. The car started shaking while on the highway for about seven8 seconds and then I heard an explosion smoke and fire. I pulled to the side. The car was on fire. The whole car was on fire within a minute or two I always took care of the car. Don’t understand how that happened. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
The contact owned a 2017 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact stated that while driving at 40 MPH, another vehicle crashed into the rear driver side of the vehicle, causing him to lose control of the vehicle, collided into the curb, and the two right side tires, both driver's and passenger tires, became blown and damaged. The contact mentioned that after colliding with the curb, he crashed into a tree, which caused the right passenger side rim to detach from the tire. The contact also mention from the impact the whole right passenger side of the completely crushed and was damaged. The contact stated that no air bags deployed in his vehicle. The contact stated that he sustained a concussion to the head from the driver side window, brushing of the right rib, and bruises on both left and right hands. Medical attention was required. The contact stated that a police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to City Towing. The manufacturer was notified of this failure, and they requested information from the contact regarding the accident. The approximate failure mileage was 90,000.
Component or System Failure The vehicle experienced two major mechanical failures. First, the transmission failed and required full replacement shortly after the expiration of the 60,000-mile powertrain warranty. At the time of this failure, the vehicle had approximately 61,000 miles. Second, at 100,119 miles, the engine suffered a catastrophic failure that required complete engine replacement. Safety Risk The transmission failure impaired normal drivability and created a safety risk due to reduced or unreliable propulsion, which could have resulted in loss of power while driving in traffic. The engine failure rendered the vehicle inoperable and could have posed a serious safety hazard if it had occurred while the vehicle was in motion, including sudden loss of engine power. Problem Confirmation and Inspection Both failures were diagnosed and confirmed by dealership service personnel, who determined that full replacement of the transmission and later the engine was necessary. The issues were identified through inspection and standard diagnostic procedures. Warning Lamps or Symptoms There were no clear, persistent, or meaningful warning lamps, messages, or symptoms that would have reasonably alerted the driver to an impending transmission failure prior to it occurring. Any warning indicators appeared at or immediately before the failure. Similarly, there were no significant warning signs that would have predicted the engine failure prior to the need for complete replacement. Additional Information Both the transmission and engine failed at relatively low mileage for major powertrain components. The transmission failure occurred just beyond the powertrain warranty threshold, and the engine required full replacement at 100,119 miles. . These failures suggest a potential defect or durability concern affecting critical powertrain systems.
While driving, the vehicle has repeatedly experienced sudden loss of power and electrical failures without warning. During these events, the dashboard flickers, warning messages appear, and the vehicle shuts off or goes into reduced power mode. When this occurs, steering becomes extremely difficult, braking becomes stiff, and the vehicle cannot accelerate. These incidents have happened multiple times in different driving situations, including: At stoplights While pulling into intersections Backing out of parking spaces Driving on public roads, including dark rural roads Driving with my three minor children in the vehicle On at least one occasion, the vehicle shut off while pulling onto a road with oncoming traffic, leaving us stopped in the roadway with no power and limited steering/braking. This created an immediate and serious risk of collision. The vehicle eventually restarted after several attempts. The problem has occurred repeatedly over many months. Multiple independent repair facilities have attempted to diagnose and repair the issue, but no definitive cause has been identified, and the failures continue. The vehicle has had numerous electrical, sensor, engine, and powertrain-related repairs, yet the loss-of-power events persist. Because the vehicle can suddenly shut down while in motion and compromise steering and braking, I believe this is a serious safety defect that could result in a crash, injury, or worse.
Warning light indicating front passenger airbag inflator which is at risk of exploding during a crash due to propellant degradation sending metal fragments into the vehicle.
The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact stated that while driving 65 MPH, the vehicle started shuddering violently, prompting the contact to discontinue driving over 60 MPH. Additionally, the contact stated that there was an abnormal clicking sound while making right or left turns. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed, but the cause of the failure could not be determined. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 122,000.
The passenger seat belt will no longer just click in. In order for us to get it to latch, you have to push down on the red button as your pushing the seat belt in, then it will latch. We bought this used and within 1-2 weeks this happened. But other things happened with the engine and that took priority. It was in the shop for almost 6 months. I'm not sure if the dealer/ previous seller knew about it and they were able to "fix" it so it worked when we bought it. (We are lied to on a lot of things) I'm afraid that it might not hold up in a crash if it's not buckling right.
The contact owned a 2017 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact stated while driving 70 MPH on the highway, the contact and his wife noticed an abnormal odor coming from the air conditioning unit. The contact pulled over to a rest stop and exited the vehicle to inspect the front of the vehicle. The contact stated that the vehicle was still drivable, and the contact returned to the residence. An undisclosed dealer was contacted. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the A/C condenser needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired; however, the contact was informed that the dealer was waiting for approval from the manufacturer. The contact related the failure to the Special Coverage Adjustment: 17336(Air Conditioning Condenser (Combi-Cooler) Refrigerant Leak). The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and opened a case. The failure mileage was 50,000.
The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact stated that while driving at undisclosed speeds, the vehicle hesitated to upshift while the accelerator pedal was depressed, and the vehicle experienced a loss of automotive power. Additionally, the contact stated that the vehicle failed to shift into the intended gear while the gear shifter was in use. An unknown warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was towed to a local service center, where it was diagnosed and determined that there were metal shavings in the engine, and the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The transmission had been replaced prior to the failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 105,000.
Transmission failed and needed to be replaced.
The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact stated while the vehicle was taken for a routine oil change at the dealer, the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle received unknown repairs, and an unknown recall repair for the lifters was performed. The contact had retrieved the vehicle and several weeks later, while driving at 35 MPH, the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was then towed to the deale,r where it was diagnosed with engine failure. The contact believed that the recall repair of the lifters had caused the engine failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 90,000.
The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact stated that while driving approximately 10 MPH, the vehicle lost motive power. The contact stated that while depressing the accelerator pedal, the engine revved; however, the vehicle failed to respond as needed. The vehicle was restarted, shifted to neutral(N) and then drive(D) and driven for a short while before the failure reoccurred. The vehicle was taken to a family members’ residence. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 159,000.
When turning the car left, the power to the engine dies. This also happens on many instances that the power has died to the engine mid drive on the road and hwy. Suddenly the forward collision note appears on the dash and other warnings appear after and then the power dies to the engine. Must stop and restart the engine for it to reset. Yes, it is available for inspection. While driving at high speeds the forward collision appears, and the car can suddenly die mid drive. Even at highway speeds. No, they claim that they cannot reproduce the issue. It has been taken to the dealer at least 5 times It appeared after seat heat function went out and was worked on
I purchased this car at CarZone in Riverside This April 2024. I drove home with my kids in the dark and people kept honking. The lights and turn signals did not work. I took the car back in. The back up camera was broken, the safety system is broken, brakes are bad, they put two bald and all four tires with gummy plugs after I brought it back a fourth time. The tires were not fixed. I found out driving on the highway with my daughter. My tires popped. I had to pay for all four to be replaced and the dealership will not take any of my calls. I then had a check oil light. I took the car in. Pep boys discovered they had replaced the oil hose with a different one. It backed up into the engine. I paid for an oil change and was told to keep an eye on it and contact the dealership. They would not respond. I went back to pep boys be my car was completely out of oil one week later and my headlights kept dying and the car wont accelerate. They did another diagnostic and contacted the dealership and warranty saying it needs a new engine entirely. They sent an adjuster who said nothing was wrong and closed it. I have had to take the car back since. The liftgate is zip tied to the tail pipe. I am terrified to drive this car, especially the head light and brakes. I bought new tires bc the dealership would not help even though I have all the text messages they sent about the issues. It no longer accelerates the way it should and I have to put three quarts of oil minimum per week to keep it running at all. I am out so much money that I do not have and I cant drive an unsafe car with my babies in it. Upon further investigation I have found this dealership has done this to many people. I just need help getting them to take this car back or pay to fix it and to make sure they are following safety laws. I feel responsible to report this because I know I wish someone else had and it would be absolutely devastating if someone got injured in a vehicle sold by them.
The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact stated that the vehicle suddenly lunged forward while driving approximately 30 - 40 MPH. The next day while the vehicle was idling at a stop sign, the contact attempted to accelerate however, the RPM increased but the vehicle failed to move forward. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle had not been taken to the dealer. The vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 150,000.
The Active Fuel Management valves in cylinder 1,4,6&8 failed prematurely
Both back door rocker panels are rusting
Sitting in my truck and everything just stopped working. Starter was still going even with the key out of the ignition and there was a burn smelling come from under the engine and the truck wouldn't Starter. Had to get it tow from my job. Till this day my truck is still down. Engine be replace and the dealership still don't know why it still wouldn't starter. Also before the electrical problem. Me and my family was come down the highway from a vacation and the engine when i lost acceleration to the engine. The speed limit was 65 I can only do 25 because the engine lost acceleration. I only had the truck for three months. People told me that there was recalls on engine problem with the Chevrolet suburban and Tahoe. I looked it up and it is for 2019 and up. So know i have to pay 3800 to replace everything. I cant afford to replace anything I cant afford I use vehicle. The dealership that I got the vehicle from is closed down because they was lemons to people know everyone is stuck with a vehicle that they still have to pay the bank. And can't drive there vehicle. It's not right they have recalls on vehicles that are 2019 and up. I'm just looking for help. Because to be honest me and my family wouldn't be here because of the engine and electrical problem. So can someone please look in to this from a sincere father, husband, grandfather. The dealership name is Stratum auto group. 2050 Burlington-mount holly
Had to have all lifters replaced even after its a known issue with the manufacturer i had to pay out of pocket with no recall
Moisture in the APP sensor connectors causing reduced engine power code affecting acceleration randomly very dangerous on the road
Transmission failed at 82,000 miles. Had to be completely rebuilt. Paid $5,486.87 out of pocket. (see receipts attached)
FUEL INJECTORS are malfunctioning. Engine light has come on multiple times flashing and goes off. Took it to Ernie Lee's Service Center & told fuel injectors are not functioning properly. I will be glad to allow it to be inspected upon request because they all need to be replaced & told there's a bulletin out but Universal Chevrolet told me it EXCLUDES 2017 SUBURBANS.. It started around 100,000 miles & I only have 125,000 miles on it.
Transmission sudden failure. We were driving down the road when we suddenly lost all power to the wheels. No ability to accelerate or maintain vehicle speed, only coast with the remaining speed we had like it was in neutral. No warnings or trouble light, no noticeable symptoms ahead of time. I would press the gas pedal and the engine would Rev high like it was in neutral. I had just pulled out into the flow of traffic and the cars behind me soon had to all come to a stop because i lost accelaration and had nowhere to go with parked cars along the side of the road. Luckily we were not on a really busy road and could eventually get out of traffic. I can only imagine how bad it could have been if I was in the middle of highway traffic, or going up a snowy hill, or trying to cross a divided highway, etc. The car had to be towed to the nearest dealership and is awaiting repair. The dealer says the torque converter failed and subsequently damaged the transmission fluid pump and will require the entire transmission to be replaced and cost us over $6600. It should be available for inspection but I guess you would need to contact Blaise Alexander Chevrolet of phillipsburg pa. I don't know if anyone else has inspected it. I suspect this is a very well known issue/defect. Other mechanics I talked with instantly guessed the failure before the dealer could tell us. I have the 6 speed transmission and I see there is a class action lawsuit for the similar 8 speed failures.
The brakes fail on a regular basis!! If when backing out of a parking space you lightly press the brake, slightly release and try to depress the brakes again, power braking appears to be completely gone! The same applies moving forward. Especially in high traffic situations. Cars will move forward slowly. As you release the brakes and start to move but need to reapply as traffic starts to slow again the suburban requires maximum effort to press the brake pedal and get the vehicle to stop. I’m 240lbs. I have to press hard! My wife has almost rear ended multiple cars due to this issue. It’s typically low speed so the damage would be minimal to another vehicle. However, my wife is a school teacher! Kids cross the teacher parking lot all the time! If she lets off her brakes to go and a student walks in front of the suburban, the results could be catastrophic! This is a MAJOR safety issue. I see there is already a recall for MANY vehicles just like mine!! Please tell me why this is not being fixed on ours!! The problem can be reproduced on command. It almost sounds like it’s metal to metal contact when it happens. If you let your foot completely off the brake pedal and roll forward it will revert back to normal operation. It is only when there is a gradual release then reapplication of braking pressure applied to the brake pedal. It has not been taken to the dealership as we can’t afford it at the moment. There are no warning lights currently showing on the vehicle display. This has been happening for quite some time. Probably six months or so but the website does not allow for a range of date. I put today’s date as my wife said she almost rear ended someone again today!!
While driving at 70 mph transmission went out. Shifted from N back to D but no response. Coasted to shoulder of interstate and stop. Shut off vehicle and restarted but vehicle would not move. Shut off again and restarted this time if went into D. Could not any faster than 35 mph. Transmission would not shift automatically. Tried manually but same results. Was able to exit interstate. Got vehicle to Chevy dealership and was told I needed a new transmission. Vehicle has 106,000 miles.
The first problem that happened with the 2017 Chevrolet Suburban was we were driving and the 1 of 2 brake boosters gave out. We had to contact with customer service of Chevrolet of informed them about what happened. We took the vehicle to a local dealership to have fixed, then after that we started to have problems with the transmission, fuel pump and the air ride. With the transmission/electrical system you would be driving down the road, the next thing that you will know is that the door locks will lock then unlock, then the vehicle will would let a big amount of smoke out of the vehicle, and then the vehicle would power down to 20mph. You would have to drive 20 for 5 miles until the vehicle would quit and you could drive normal. I was going to go for my mandatory user maintenance and I did not get 2 miles out of town and the transmission went out of the vehicle.
Transmission failure. loss of movement into intersections causing dangerous situation for my family. problem has been reproduced by local independent auto tech. I am about to go through my insurance since there is no recall on this apparent known issue by GM. no warning light to notify me of any issues.
6L80 transmission failure at only 82k miles. This is a known Chevrolet fail point on all vehicles equipped with this transmission yet Chevrolet does nothing to recall or repair the issue. Customer absorbs full cost of repair ($6k) and chevrolet acts like they know nothing about it. This happens on the highway at speeds and vehicles suddenly have no drive putting occupants at risk of other traffic and trying to get off the roadway where there may be no safe zone to stop.
The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact stated while driving 70 MPH, the vehicle was smoking from the rear, and the ABS failed to operate as designed, causing the wheels to lock-up. The contact stated that the failure occurred on several occasions. The service stabili-trak warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that the wheel speed sensor had failed. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer who stated that the transmission had failed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was approximately 117,000.
1 vehicle electronic panel not working properly.. transmission making loud noise and now slipping due to normal driving unsafe while at traffic light locks lock and unlock by themselves vehicle now unsafe at 5;000 miles felt strange shifting now I had to spend 1900 dollars for broken motor mounts I believe these motor mounts were already broken I bought this vehicle with 3500 miles on it I believe the motor mounts were already broken now 140;000 miles and transmission is either done or electrical issues
While driving on interstate 465 in Indianapolis on Tues 9/12/23 my 2017 Chevy Suburban completely lost any ability to accelerate. Fortunately I was able to coast over to the shoulder and have the vehicle towed to the closest Chevy dealership. The dealership determined it was a catastrophic failure of the transmission and recommends full transmission replacement for the vehicle to be drivable again.
A Chevy Suburban is a vehicle made to transport large families. You would assume these are made with true utmost safety precautions in mind to protect families. At just over 47K miles on my vehicle, our transmission went out, even though we have regular maintenance completed on our vehicle. The check engine light came on while driving on the highway. Was able to make it to a shop who verified it was the transmission. Took it to the dealer who also confirmed it is the transmission, and their 4th one on a newer Chevy Suburban to come in just today. They said they have 37 on the lot with transmission issues on newer Chevys, and some blew out while driving. We were very fortunate it did not blow out while driving, but it’s unacceptable for a family car’s transmission to go out with so little mileage. This has to be a major defect and cause for concern.
The factory exterior paint is failing. Most notable on the hood, roof and back passenger side lower quarter panel area. I just got an estimate to just repaint the hood through the dealership and it was over $3,000.00 (estimate attached) and ballpark estimate to repaint the entire car was around $10,000.000. They indicated that they were not aware of any factory recalls for the failing paint. I've heard that other car owners have experienced the same issue.
The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle inadvertently jolted forward. The vehicle was able to stop while the brake pedal was depressed. No warning light was illuminated. The failure recurred while the contact was driving to the residence. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and confirmed that there was no recall associated with the VIN. The failure mileage was approximately 40,000.
Despite replacing Throttle Body and Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor, I continue to have my Suburban go into Reduced Engine Power without much warning. It is very dangerous when you are driving on the freeway and your vehicle suddenly will not do over 35mph with the engine revving to 4000+ RPM. I've spent nearly $1000 at repair shops and have found that nothing they attempt will fix the problem. I cannot trust vehicle with my wife and kids riding any distance in it.
The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact stated while operating the vehicle, there was an abnormal gasoline odor inside and outside the vehicle. The vehicle was examined by an independent mechanic who determined that while the engine was turned on fuel was leaking from the fuel line connected to the fuel pump and that the fuel line needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was contacted but no assistance was offered. The local dealer was not notified. The failure mileage was 120,000.
The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact stated that while her husband was driving approximately 60 MPH, the speed inadvertently decelerated to 30 MPH. The contact then stated that her husband depressed the accelerator pedal; however, the vehicle failed to respond. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed and determined that the transmission failed and needed to be replaced or repaired. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 106,000.
While driving the Suburban in the early morning of Sunday, March 26, our Suburban's started on fire from under the front hood. The fire quickly engulfed the entire vehicle within minutes, destroying everything inside of it.
Service Trailer Brake System light keeps coming on even after replacing the unit it self.
The brakes will sometimes not work properly. When the brake pedal is pressed when parking or coming to a stop, it takes longer for the vehicle to stop. The brake pedal will also vibrate when coming to a stop and "roll" to a stop. We have had our brakes checked twice in the last 3 months at the Chevrolet dealership and they say the brakes are fine. We now had an incident where we were parking in a parking garage and nearly hit the wall in front of us because the brakes did not stop the car properly. We had the vehicle towed to the dealership to have the brakes checked again (February 3rd, 2023). We were afraid to drive it ourselves on the freeway. Since it is the weekend, we have to wait until Monday (2/6/2023) for them to check our vehicle. We are going to let the dealership know what we have found online with the "recall" of certain 2017 Chevrolet Suburbans about a defect in the Brake Assist and Power Brake Vacuum Pump. This has been an ongoing issue we've had since we purchased the vehicle (new purchase in 2017), but it has progressively gotten worse.
The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact stated while driving 5 MPH and exiting a parking lot, while depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle failed to properly accelerate as needed. The contact stated that the check engine warning light was illuminated. The contact was able to shift into low gear and continued driving to his residence. The vehicle became undrivable. The contact called the local dealer and made them aware of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact towed the vehicle to the independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed with needing the transmission to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 43,684.
The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact stated while driving 75 MPH, the vehicle started shaking forcefully. The contact stated that the check engine warning light was illuminated. The contact took the vehicle to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed with needing the engine to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 61,000. The contact noted that the failure speed was approximately 65 mph, not 75.
The electrical system has gone out completely comes back a few seconds later with different icons saying to roll driver side window down then up, or stabiltrax. It has also caused complete electrical failure being on a road while driving. This has also cause my wheel to jerk taking out the power steering and the engine has shut off completely to the point where I have to wait a few minutes to even turn it on. This has happened while reversing in to a parking spot and the whole car dies. It kills power so much that I have no hazard lights. When I’m able to get it to come Back on it’s like it reset its self. I have taken it to the shop and they have said the battery cables and the mega fuse above the battery. I know this is a known issue in other like vehicles.
My transmission failed and I had to get a new one on my trip.
Transmission went out at 5 years
I was driving on the highway at 50 mph with my 3 kids and my vehicle stop accelerating . I almost got in a major Car accident . I had no warning lights at all . I contacted the dealership to tow Car and the transmission failed internally, I ask for Assitance since the 8 speed transmission has a class action lawsuit and Chevy denied Assitance since I have a 6 speed transmission. I believe this is a safety issue that may cause fatalities driving with children and no acceleration at 50
At 105000 miles the torque converter on the 6L80 transmission failed. I am having my transmission rebuilt.
antilock brake system makes it hard to press brakes mostly traveling at lower speed like when i’m parking. previously had it reprogrammed because of a recall but it continues to have this issue periodically. now i’m being told I need to replace to brake vacuum?
What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The transmission had a failure. The torque converter along with a valve assembly failed which caused metal to go everywhere inside of the transmission case. Per the transmission shop that completed the rebuild, they have seen this exact problem numerous times before and have fixed it. Rebuilt kit included cooling bypass, billet torque converter and other parts to rebuild transmission. Vehicle only had 85K miles on it and is a 2017. Price to rebuild was $4000, and dealership quoted almost $6000 for a reman. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? Vehicle transmission disengaged while attempting to merge into traffic on busy road. Vehicle was stuck in middle of intersection with 3 small children in the back while vehicles were passing at high rates of speed on a 45mph limit roadway. The vehicle was unable to be safely moved until good Samaritans were able to push the vehicle in neutral to the side of the roadway. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? The vehicle transmission was inspected by both a local Southern NV Chevy dealership as well as a Transmission shop and was confirmed to need replacement due to the damage from the vehicle. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? The parts that were removed from the vehicle were not inspected by any of the above parties. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No error codes or MILs were present before, during, or after the transmissions failure. Repair invoice available upon request.
