HISTORY: I PURCHASED A CERTIFIED USED 2009 CHEVROLET TRAVERSE ON 10/22/2013 WITH A SERVICE CONTACT. THE VEHICLE HAS 44339 MILES. PRESENT: A FEW DAYS PRIOR TO MY CAR BEING SERVICED BEFORE A ROAD TRIP. I NOTICE WHAT TURN OUT TO BE A RED AIR BAG SERVICE LIGHT SYMBOL ON MY DASH BOARD THAT STAYS ON WHEN THE CAR IS RUNNING. ON JUNE 9TH 2015 AT 6:30 AM I DROPPED OFF MY CAR TO THE CHEVY DEALER'S SERVICE DEPARTMENT. AT 12 NOON I CALLED SERVICE TO GET FEEDBACK ABOUT MY CAR; I HOWEVER, HAD TO LEAVE A MESSAGE REQUESTING AN UPDATE ABOUT MY CAR. I RECEIVED A CALL FROM THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT AFTER 2:30 PM. SHE STATED THAT THERE WAS NO COMMUNICATION WITH THE S.D.M. MODULE AND THAT THEY WOULD NEED TO CHECK FURTHER. SHE STATED THAT TO CHECK FOR THE TROUBLE IT WOULD COST CLOSE TO $600 AND IF THEY HAD TO REPLACE THE SMD IT WOULD COST ME $980.80. I ASKED WHY I SHOULD HAVE TO PAY TO HAVE A DEFECTIVE OR DAMAGED AIR BAG SERVICED OR REPAIRED ESPECIALLY WHEN IT BE IN SAFE WORKING ORDER. THE NEXT DAY I SPOKE WITH A SUPERVISOR AT MY JOB WHO SAID THAT HE HAS THE SAME CAR, SAME YEAR AND THE SAME COLOR AS MY CAR. HE HAD THE SAME EXACT PROBLEM WITH HIS CAR WHILE IT WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY. HE SAID THAT HIS CAR WAS IN THE SHOP ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS WITH MULTIPLE DEALERS THEY NEVER COULD FIND OUT WHAT CAUSED THE AIR BAG LIGHT TO COME ON. HE SAID FINALLY THE AIR BAG LIGHT WENT OFF WITH NO EXPLANATION AFTER BEING SERVICE AT A DIFFERENT REPAIR SHOP FOR A DIFFERENT PROBLEM. NOW THE SIDE AIR BAG WAS RECALL FOR NOT WORKING PROPERLY. HOW CAN I FIND OUT ABOUT THE DEFECTIVE AIR BAG ASSOCIATED WITH THE 2009 CHEVROLET TRAVERSE? OR HOW MANY TIMES THIS CAR HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP FOR THE AIR BAG OR THE HISTORICAL PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH THE TRAVERSE. DEALER: CHEVROLET OF JERSEY CITY 905 COMMUNIPAW AVE. TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL IS SOMETIMES VERY STIFF AND DIFFICULT. FEAR OF AN ACCIDENT OCCURRING DUE TO THIS ISSUE. HAD A CHEVROLET DEALERSHIP LOOK AT THE VEHICLE DURING AN AIRBAG RECALL FIX. NO APPARENT PROBLEMS COULD BE DETECTED BY TECHNICIANS. SEARCHED INTERNET AND FOUND THIS TO BE A POPULAR PROBLEM WITH THIS VEHICLE. *TR
WHILE AT SLOW SPEEDS, TURNING CAN BECOME EXTREMELY HARD. ACTS LIKE THE POWER STEERING HAS QUIT, BUT THEN A FEW SECONDS LATER IT IS FINE. POWER STEERING FLUID IS AT THE APPROPRIATE LEVELS. SEEMS TO HAPPEN MORE OFTEN WHEN YOU ARE DOING FREQUENT TURNING AT SLOWER SPEEDS. *TR
I CALLED TO MAKE AN APPT. FOR AN AIR BAG RECALL WHEN IT STARTED SLIPPING OUT OF DRIVE WHILE DRIVING. I COULD NOT GET ONE FOR FIVE DAYS. I WAS TOLD NOT TO WORRY IT WOULD BE FINE. I BARELY MADE IT TO THE DEALERSHIP, REVERSE WAS GONE AND I HAD TO DRIVE SLOW AND DROP IT INTO LOW, WHEN IT WOULD SLIP OUT OF GEAR I JUST PRAYED THE GUY BEHIND ME WOULD NOT REAR END ME. THEY TOLD ME THAT THIS WAS ALSO ON RECALL AND THEY WOULD FIX IT FOR FREE. THE NEXT DAY THEY CALLED AND TOLD ME I WOULD HAVE TO PAY $6000.00 FOR A NEW TRANSMISSION, WHEN I TOLD THEM I WASN'T PAYING ANYTHING HE SAID HE WOULD TALK TO GM AGAIN. THEN HE CALLED AND SAID IT WAS $4000.00! I TOLD HIM AGAIN I WASN'T PAYING ANYTHING AND HE SAID HE WOULD TALK TO HIS GENERAL MANAGER. THEN HE CALLED AND SAID THE GENERAL MANGER WOULD OVERRIDE GM AND ONLY CHARGE ME A $500.00 RECALL DEDUCTIBLE. THIS IS CRAZY!! THIS CAR HAS HAD NUMEROUS RECALLS, TIMING CHAIN, AIR BAGS, FAULTY SEAT BELTS, HEATED WASHER FLUID MECHANISM CAUSING FIRES, AND NOW THIS. THE LAST RECALL I TOOK IT IN FOR THEY INFORMED ME THAT THE MASTER CYLINDER IS LEAKING INTO THE POWER BRAKE BOOSTER AND WANT $600.00 TO FIX THAT. HE TOLD ME TO DRIVE IT UNTIL THE BRAKE LIGHT CAME ON AND FIX IT THEN! THIS MODEL ALSO ROLLS IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION OF THE GEAR IT IS IN. I HAVE BEEN TOLD IT IS A "FEATURE" OF THIS MODEL. I HAVE SEARCHED ON LINE AND FOUND SEVERAL COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS FOR OTHER 2009 TRAVERSE'S. SOME STATE THAT IT IS A "CHARACTERISTIC" OF THIS MODEL. THE TRUTH IS IT IS A FLAW. IT CAN'T BE FIXED AND THEY DON'T WANT TO RECALL THE VEHICLE. THEY GAVE ME A LOANER THAT IS A 2013 TRAVERSE AND IT DOESN'T DO IT. I HAVE TO DRIVE MINE LIKE IT IS A STRAIGHT DRIVE. I LIVE IN THE MOUNTAINS AND IF I STOP ON A HILL I HAVE TO LEAVE MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE AND GIVE IT GAS BEFORE I TAKE MY FOOT OFF OR ELSE I ROLL INTO THE CAR BEHIND ME. THIS CAR IS A LEMON, SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE. *TR
I OWN A 2009 CHEVROLET TRAVERSE LTZ.. I HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING STEERING PROBLEMS WITH THIS VEHICLE AT LOW SPEEDS WHEN PARKING IN PARKING SLOTS AND WHEN TURNING AT INTERSECTIONS. WHEN TURNING OR PARKING THE POWER STEERING WILL NOT WORK AND THE VEHICLE IS VERY DIFFICULT TO STEER. I HAVE CHECK THE POWER STEERING FLUID AND THE FLUID LEVELS ARE FINE. I HAVE SPENT OVER $1,200.00 ON TRYING TO REPAIR THE PROBLEM AND THE VEHICLE IS STILL HAVING PROBLEMS STEERING. I HAVE TAKEN THE VEHICLE TO A LOCAL DEALERSHIP AND THE DEALERSHIP ADVISED ME THAT THERE ARE NO RECALLS FOR THIS VEHICLE. MY WIFE IS THE PRIMARY DRIVER OF THIS VEHICLE AND I AM AFRAID IF THE STEERING LOCKS UP WHAT MAY HAPPEN TO HER WHILE SHE IS DRIVING THE VEHICLE. I AM TO A POINT THAT I WANT TO SELL OR TRADE THE VEHICLE BUT I DO NOT WANT TO PUT THE BURDEN OF THIS VEHICLE ON ANYONE ELSE. I HOPE THAT GM HAS A RECALL SOON ON THIS VEHICLE BECAUSE I AM AFRAID WHAT MAY HAPPEN IF THIS PROBLEM IS NOT ADDRESSED. *TR
WHEN OPERATING THE VEHICLE AT SLOW SPEEDS (I.E. BACKING INTO PARKING SPACES, TAKING SHARP CURVES), THE VEHICLE'S POWER STEERING WILL FAIL , MAKING IT NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO TURN THE VEHICLE. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 CHEVROLET TRAVERSE. THE CONTACT RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V118000 (AIR BAGS) HOWEVER, THE PART TO DO THE REPAIR WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER EXCEEDED A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME FOR THE RECALL REPAIR. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE ISSUE. THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCED A FAILURE.
INTERMITTENT STEERING PROBLEMS UNDER 20-25 MPH. FIRST ISSUE WAS INTERMITTENT POWER STEERING WHEN TRYING TO TURN IN TO MY DRIVEWAY OR PARKING SPOT. NOW HAS GOTTEN WORSE TO NOW STEERING WHEEL GETS REALLY HARD TO TURN WHEN MAKING SLIGHT TURN ON TO OFF RAMP OR SIDE STREET. I HAVE TO MANHANDLE THE STEERING WHEEL TO KEEP FROM RUNNING OFF THE RAMP OR RUN INTO OTHER VEHICLES. *TR

THE CONTACT STATED THAT NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V266000 (SEAT BELTS) AND NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V118000 (AIR BAGS) EXCEEDED A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME FOR THE RECALL REPAIR. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE PART WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE DELAY. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCED THE FAILURE. UPDATED 1/21/15*CN
SINCE BACK IN APRIL 2014 I STARTED TO NOTICE THAT AT TIME THE WHEEL WOULD BE HARD TO TURN WHEN PARKING. I CONTACT THE DEALER AND THEY SAID THAT POWER STEERING WAS A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH THE TRAVERSE. JUST RECENTLY IT GOT SO BAD THAT I CAN'T TURN THE WHEEL SAFELY. WHEN MAKING A RIGHT TURN THE WHEEL LOCKED AND I ROLLED INTO THE CURVE. WHEN PULLING OUT OF THE PARKING LOT I HAD TO GIVE IT SOME GAS TO GET THE WHEEL TO TRY TO TURN AND ALMOST HIT A PERSON. WHEN TO TRYING TO BACK THE CAR BECAUSE THE WHEEL IS SO TIGHT I ALMOST HIT SOMEONE AGAIN. I CONTACTED GM AND THEY SAID THEY WOULD OFFER ME COST ASSISTANCE TO GET IT FIX. THE DEALER SAID THEY PUT ALL MY INFORMATION IN SOME CALCULATION SYSTEM AND IT CAME BACK AS THE ONLY COST ASSISTANCE I QUALIFIED FOR IS 100% PARTICIPATION ON MY PART. I HAVE TO COST ASSISTANT TO HELP MYSELF PAY THE BILL. I DON'T WANT TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR HITTING A PERSON OR ANOTHER CAR BECAUSE MY WHEEL IS LOCKING BECAUSE THE POWER STEERING GEAR IS LEAKING AND NEED TO BE REPLACE AND NOW THE POWER STEERING PUMP IS BAD. AND THEY KEEP TELLING ME THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE AND EVERYONE HAS TO PAY FOR GM ERROR. *TR

THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THE FAILURE WAS EXPERIENCED MULTIPLE TIMES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO STATED THAT THE RACK AND PINION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED ABOUT THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 80,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 CHEVROLET TRAVERSE. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 20 MPH, THE VEHICLE LOST POWER AND THE BATTERY WAS COMPLETELY DRAINED. ALL THE LIGHTS ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL ILLUMINATED. ALSO, WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED, IT STARTED TO ROLL AWAY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS WORKING UP TO STANDARDS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE ISSUE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN. UPDATED 1/13/15*CN UPDATED 9/6/2017*CN
I PURCHASED A 2009 CHEVY TRAVERSE NEW IN MARCH OF 2009. THE VEHICLE HAS APPROX 125,000 MILES ON IT & IS OUT OF WARRANTY. RECENTLY THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO LOSE POWER ASSIST IN STEERING AT LOW SPEEDS MAKING IT NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO MAKE A TURN. I HAVE BEEN CLOSE TO STRIKING OTHER VEHICLES AND OBJECTS AS I HAVE TRIED TO TURN. THIS IS INTERMITTENT & I NEVER KNOW WHEN IT IS GOING TO HAPPEN. THIS IS A VERY, VERY DANGEROUS ISSUE & NEEDS TO BE DEALT WITH AS THERE ARE SEVERAL OWNERS OF THIS OR SIMILAR GM VEHICLES THAT HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM, AS INDICATED BY THE MANY INTERNET FORUMS RELATED TO THIS MATTER. PLEASE, PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS BEFORE PEOPLE ARE INJURED OR KILLED. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A LOCAL REPAIR SHOP, THEY SAY IT NEEDS A STEERING GEAR & PUMP AT A COST OF $1,629.58, HOWEVER, AFTER READING SOME POSTS FROM OTHERS WHO HAVE HAD THE REPAIRS COMPLETED, IT DOES NOT APPEAR THIS FIXES THE PROBLEM. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 CHEVROLET TRAVERSE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE STEERING WHEEL BECAME VERY DIFFICULT TO TURN. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE POWER STEERING PUMP WAS DEFECTIVE. THE POWER STEERING PUMP WAS REPLACED AND THE STEERING GEAR TOE WAS ADJUSTED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 93,186.
THERE IS A LOSS OF POWER STEERING AT LOW SPEEDS WHEN MAKING SHARP TURNS SUCH AS U TURNS AND TURNING INTO PARKING SPOTS. THE POWER STEERING FLUID LEVEL HAS BEEN CHECKED AND IS FINE. PURCHASED THE VEHICLE IN AUGUST 2009. IN LATE 2009/EARLY 2010 THERE WAS A RECALL RELATED TO THE STEERING COLUMN. IN THE LAST FEW YEARS THERE HAS BEEN NOISE EMITTED FROM THE COLUMN, BUT CHEVY DEALERSHIP SAID THIS WAS NOT A SAFETY ISSUE AND IT WOULD COST OVER $1000 TO FIX. HOWEVER, NOW IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND IS GETTING WORSE. THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS ONLINE ABOUT THE SAME PROBLEM. CHEVY SHOULD ISSUE A RECALL BEFORE SOMEONE IS SERIOUSLY INJURED. *TR
POWER STEERING FAILS RANDOMLY AND FOR NO REASON MULTIPLE TIMES. CALLED GM AND THEY HAD NO RESPONSE, SAID THAT THERE WAS NO INFORMATION THAT THEY COULD PROVIDE ME OTHER TO SAY THAT THERE IS NOT AN OPEN RECALL ON MY VIN FOR THIS, AND BASICALLY REFUSED TO EVEN MAKE A RECORD OR NOTE OF THE CONCERNS SO THAT IT COULD BE TRACKED TO CONFIRM THAT THIS IS AN ISSUE FOR THIS VEHICLE. *TR
VEHICLE IS DIFFICULT TO STEER AT SLOW SPEEDS, ESPECIALLY WHEN TURNING A CORNER OR INTO A PARKING SPACE. THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING FOR THE LAST 3-4 MONTHS BUT HAS BEEN MORE FREQUENT LATELY. MY DAUGHTER WILL BE GETTING HER LICENSE SOON AND I AM CONCERNED ABOUT HER DRIVING ALONE AND PANICKING IF THIS WERE TO HAPPEN TO HER. *TR
I AM HAVING ISSUES WITH THE POWER STEERING FAILING ON MY TRAVERSE. AT LOW SPEEDS THE POWER STEERING SEEMS TO GIVE OUT OCCASIONALLY. THIS PROBLEM COMES AND GOES, AND IT IS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO TURN THE WHEEL WHEN THIS HAPPENS AND AM AFRAID OF SERIOUS INJURY IF INVOLVED IN A CRASH BECAUSE OF THIS. CHEVROLET SEEMS TO KNOW THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THIS BUT WILL NOT COVER IT UNDER ANY WARRANTY. *TR
WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE THE POWER STEERING WILL CUT OUT. THE VEHICLE IS VERY DIFFICULT TO TURN AND IT IS DIFFICULT TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. HAS ALMOST RESULTED IN MULTIPLE ACCIDENTS WHEN NAVIGATING PARKING LOTS OR OTHER AREAS AT SLOW SPEEDS AS WELL. *TR
POWER STEERING FAILURE WHILE TURNING AT LOW SPEEDS. PROBLEM IS WORSE AND OCCURS MOST WHEN TRYING TO PARK. YOU CAN BE HALFWAY THROUGH YOUR TURN INTO A PARKING SPACE AND ALL OF A SUDDEN POWER STEERING GOES OUT. HAVE ALMOST HIT SEVERAL PARKED CARS JUST PULLING INTO A PARKING SPACE. ALSO HAPPENS WHEN MAKING LOW SPEED TURNS ON THE ROAD. VERY DANGEROUS BECAUSE YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN THE POWER STEERING WILL STOP WORKING. SO FAR IT HAS NOT HAPPENED AT HIGH SPEEDS AND HOPING IT NEVER DOES. *TR
WHILE TRAVELING AT SLOW SPEEDS THERE IS A COMPLETE LOSS OF POWER STEERING. MY WIFE WAS DRIVING AND NEARLY HIT PEDESTRIANS BECAUSE SHE LOST POWER STEERING, IT IS NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO STEER AT LOW SPEEDS, LIKE PARKING AND TURNING CORNERS. *TR
WHILE TAKING CORNERS AT LOW SPEEDS THE POWER STEERING WILL SUDDENLY CUT OUT. IT DOES NOT HAPPEN ALL THE TIME. I HAVE HAD MECHANICS INSPECT THE VEHICLE AND THEY CANNOT DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM. THIS IS A MAJOR ISSUE THAT NEEDS TO BE DEALT WITH IMMEDIATELY. I HAVE CALLED CHEVROLET'S HELP LINE ONLY TO TELL ME THAT EACH CASE IS DIFFERENT AND I NEED TO PAY TO HAVE THEIR MECHANIC LOOK AT IT AGAIN. WHILE ON HOLD WITH CHEVROLET, A MESSAGE WAS TOLD TO ME THAT LETTERS HAVE BEEN PLACED IN THE MAIL REGARDING THE LOSS OF POWER STEERING! I ASKED THE REPRESENTATIVE AND THAT RECALL DOES NOT INVOLVE THE TRAVERSE. MY MECHANIC SAID THIS HAS BEEN A VERY COMMON ISSUE WITH THESE VEHICLES. *TR
I HAVE NOTICED NOISE IN THE STEERING COLUMN. THE FIRST 2 TIMES I TOOK IT IN FOR SERVICE THE TECH WAS UNABLE TO REPLICATE THE PROBLEM. THE THIRD TIME I TOOK IT IN, THEY HEARD THE NOISE AND DIAGNOSED A PROBLEM WITH THE STEERING RACK. I WAS TOLD THE RACK NEEDS TO BE REPLACED, AND THAT IF I DID NOT REPLACE THE RACK I WOULD AT SOME POINT LOSE POWER STEERING. IF THIS OCCURS, I BELIEVE THAT IT IS POSSIBLE THAT I COULD BE INVOLVED IN A COLLISION. SINCE THE PROBLEM WAS DIAGNOSED, I HAVE NOTICED A VIBRATION IN THE STEERING COLUMN THAT SEEMS TO BE GETTING WORSE. AT THIS POINT, GM IS NOT TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS PROBLEM, ALTHOUGH IT IS SUCH A WIDESPREAD PROBLEM THAT A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT HAS BEEN FILED IN THE FLORIDA COURT SYSTEM. *TR
VEHICLE HAS BEEN EXPERIENCING INTERMITTENT ISSUES WITH STEERING AT LOW SPEEDS. WHILE TRYING TO PARK, PULL INTO TRAFFIC OR MAKE LOW SPEED TURNS, THE STEERING WILL SEIZE. *TR
TURNING DOWN A STREET WHEN STEERING LOCKED ON ME. ALMOST HIT A CAR AND ALMOST LOST CONTROL. I HAD TO STOP AND TRY TO NOT GO UP OVER THE CURB ALL THE WHILE ANOTHER CAR WAS COMING AS I WAS CROSSING. IT CONTINUES TO DO THIS LOCKING WHILE STEERING INTO PARKING PLACES AS WELL. VERY SCARY THAT THIS HAPPENED WHILE MY CHILDREN WERE IN THE CAR. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME IN LOOKING INTO THIS. *TR
IT IS DIFFICULT TO STEER AND MAKES A NOISE WHEN STEERING. HAD THE CAR IN TO THE SHOP AND HE SAID POWER STEERING FLUID IS GOOD AND TO CONTACT THE DEALER BECAUSE THERE ARE 1,000'S OF COMPLAINTS REGARDING THIS SAME VERY DANGEROUS SAFETY ISSUE. CALLED THE DEALER AND THEY CLAIM TO HAVE NOT HEARD OF THIS ISSUE. THIS CAR HAS HAD 6 RECALLS AND NOW THIS VERY DANGEROUS SAFETY ISSUE THAT HAD NOT BEEN RECALLED. GM NEEDS TO TAKE CARE OF THIS. WHEN I ATTEMPTED TO TURN ONTO A BUSY STREET WITH MY WIFE'S 2009 CHEVROLET TRAVERSE, THE POWER STEERING FAILED AND I NEARLY BROADSIDED ANOTHER VEHICLE. FORTUNATELY I WAS ABLE TO STOP BEFORE A COLLISION OCCURRED. WHEN I GOT HOME I CHECKED THE POWER STEERING FLUID AND IT WAS JUST UNDER THE MAX LEVEL. MY WIFE SAID SHE HAS EXPERIENCED THE SAME THING WHEN PULLING INTO A PARKING SPACE OR JUST TURNING AT SLOWER SPEEDS BUT IT HASN'T BEEN CONSISTENT. NOW IN THE LAST COUPLE MONTHS THE PROBLEM HAS BECOME CONSISTENT. I HAVE READ MANY COMPLAINTS ONLINE OF THE SAME PROBLEM WITH NOT ONLY THE TRAVERSE BUT WITH GMC ACADIA'S AND BUICK ENCLAVES. *TR
2009 CHEVY TRAVERSE LOST STEERING CONTROL ON THE FREEWAY ALMOST MAKING THE VEHICLE UNCONTROLLABLE AS EXITING THE OFF RAMP. HAD CARE BEEN DRIVEN BY MY WIFE, SHE WOULD NOT HAVE HAD THE STRENGTH TO GET THE VEHICLE UNDER CONTROL AND LIKELY WOULD HAVE RESULTED IN A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. SUBSEQUENT INVESTIGATION ON THE INTERNET REVEALED THAT HUNDREDS AND HUNDREDS OF OTHERS HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME MALFUNCTION. THE SUV JUST BARELY TURNED 5 YEARS OLD AND HAS ONLY BEEN USED IN NORMAL DRIVING CONDITIONS. THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS COMPONENT DEFECT THAT WILL ULTIMATELY COST LIVES, IF NOT ALREADY. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 100,000.
WHILE DRIVING MY CAR THE POWER STEERING ABRUBTLY STOPPED WORKING. I WAS COMING UP TO A STOP SIGN AND THE STEERING WHEEL BECAME VERY HARD TO TURN. IT TURNED OUT THAT THE POWER STEERING PUMP HAD FAILED. LUCKILY I WAS ON A RURAL ROAD WITH NO TRAFFIC AROUND ME. I TOOK IT TO THE CHEVY DEALER AND THEY REPLACED THE PUMP AT A COST OF $650. MY CONCERN IS WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF I WAS IN BUSY TRAFFIC AND THE POWER STEERING UNEXPECTEDLY STOPPED WORKING? THE OUTCOME MAY HAVE BEEN A LOT DIFFERENT.I HAVE BEEN ON SEVERAL CHEVY TRAVERSE FORUMS AND I AM AMAZED AT HOW MANY OWNERS HAVE HAD THE SAME ISSUE WITH THEIR VEHICLES. THE PASSENGER SIDE REAR COIL SPRING BROKE. THIS HAPPENED WHILE SITTING STILL IN TRAFFIC, I HEARD AN LOUD NOISE --- LIKE A FASTENER BREAKING AND THEN VEHICLE ROCKED. I PULLED OVER VERY SHORTLY AND CHECKED TO SEE IF A LUG NUTS OR TIRE BLEW AND DIDN'T SEE ANYTHING UNUSUAL. I JUST HAD MY TIRES ROTATED (4-2-14 ) AT LOCAL SHOP AND TOLD THEM ABOUT THE INCIDENT AND THEY FOUND THE TOP PART OF COIL SPRING -- APPROX. 3 TO 4 INCHES HAD BROKEN OFF. I GOT AN EST TO REPAIR AND WAS TOLD THAT THEIR PARTS SUPPLIER HAD OVER 150 UNITS OF THESE SPRINGS IN STOCK.( VERY UNUSUAL TO HAVE THIS MANY PCS IN STOCK UNLESS THERE ARE PROBLEMS W/ IT ) I ALSO THEN WENT HOME AND CHECKED ON INTERNET AND THERE ARE LOTS OF GMC & CHEVY VEH'S OF THIS TYPE THAT ARE HAVING SIMILAR PROBLEMS / ISSUES W/ THE COIL SPRING BREAKING. I CHECKED TO SEE IF ANY RECALL OR ADVISORY WAS LISTED -- NOTHING. THIS IS SOMETHING THAT SHOULD NOT BE HAPPENING -- I DRIVE MAY ROAD MILES AND THERE CERTAINLY IS NO ABUSE TO THIS VEH. I NOW MAY BE STUCK W/ A $ 300.00 PLUS REPAIR BILL WHICH IS NOT SOMETHING I'M LOOKING TO DO BECAUSE IT'S RECOMMENDED THAT BOTH COIL SPRINGS BE REPLACED BECAUSE WITH ONLY PUTTING ON 1 IT WILL BE STIFFER THAN THE ONE ON DRIVERS SIDE AND MOST LIKELY IT WILL BREAK ALSO BECAUSE OF THE SHIFT IN WEIGHT FROM THE NEW ONE. THIS TYPE OF POWER STEERING FAILURE HAS HAPPENED BEFORE.THE CHEVROLET DEALER SHIP SAID WE COULD HAVE THE RACK AND PINION REPLACED BUT COULD NOT SAY IT WOULD FIX IT AND IF YOU READ THE OTHER COMPLAINT ON HERE IT DIDN'T EVEN FIX THE PROBLEM SO I DIDN'T HAVE $1500 TO THROW AWAY. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. IT WOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE TO AVOID AN ACCIDENT BY TURNING THE VEHICLE. YOUR ONLY OPTIONS ARE TO STOP AND "MAN HANDLE" THE TRAVERSE INTO POSITION. AN ELDERLY PERSON OR A SMALLER PERSON WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO CONTROL THE VEHICLE AT ALL. GM HAS RE-DESIGNED THE NEWER TRAVERSE/ENCORE/ACADIA STEERING SYSTEMS, SO THEY KNOW A PROBLEM EXISTS. ONE DAY SOMEONE WILL GET KILLED FROM THIS STEERING PROBLEM AND EVERYONE WILL WONDER WHY A RECALL WASN'T ISSUED. SOME TYPE OF ACTION NEEDS TO TAKE PLACE WITH THIS PROBLEM. *TR
THE STEERING IS SOMETIMES VERY DIFFICULT TO TURN AT LOW SPEEDS ESPECIALLY WHEN PARKING, MAKING A TURN INTO DRIVEWAYS OR AT INTERSECTIONS. THE PROBLEM IS INTERMITTENT BUT ANNOYING AND CONCERNING ENOUGH THAT MADE IT DIFFICULT FOR ANYONE ELSE IN THE FAMILY TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE. I AM A STRONG INDIVIDUAL AND IT IS EMBARRASSING WHEN YOU TRY TO PULL INTO OR OUT OF A PARKING SPOT AND ALMOST SWIPE A VEHICLE BECAUSE OF THE STEERING DIFFICULTY. I HAVE SIPHONED AND REPLACED THE FLUID MULTIPLE TIMES AND IT SEEMS TO HELP A BIT BUT NOT ENOUGH TO WARRANT A PIECE OF MIND. I HAVE TALKED WITH THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY INDICATED THE POSSIBLE OPTIONS FOR THE FIX MAY BE IN THE $1000 TO $1400 RANGE. I WAS PLANNING TO HAVE IT FIXED; HOWEVER, BASED ON SOME OF THE POSTS, I AM HESITATING TO HAVE ANYTHING DONE IF THE ISSUE SEEMS TO COME BACK SHORTLY AFTER AS SOME INDICATED. GM WANT TO CHARGE 1300 TO FIX, BUT BASED ON OTHER COMPLAINTS, THE WORK THEY WANT DOES NOT SOLVE THEIR ISSUE. WITH GM'S TRACK RECORD OF HIDING THE TRUTH AND THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE REPORTING THE SAME ISSUE, THIS SHOULD BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY. ASSUMING THE PROBLEM WAS A LACK OF STEERING FLUID, I WENT TO A LES SCHWAB TO HAVE IT CHECKED AND FILLED, BUT THAT WASN'T THE PROBLEM. THE NEXT DAY I TOOK IT TO A SHOP AND THE MECHANIC BELIEVES THE PROBLEM TO BE THE POWER STEERING SENSOR?? THE CAR IS THERE NOW SO I DON'T KNOW THE RESULTS YET. PRIOR TO THIS INCIDENT, I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE FREEWAY AND WHEN CHANGING LANES THE STEERING STIFFENED AND RESISTED ALMOST CAUSING ME TO HIT THE MEDIAN.
