NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2016 Dodge Dart. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
The contact owns a 2016 Dodge Dart. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V674000 (Power Train); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The local dealer was contacted, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, the gear shifter failed to respond as needed. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 123,938.
In the event of having to panic stop, slamming on the brakes doesn't stop the car. The brake pedal goes all the way to the floor and I have to pump the brake before the car stops. This has happened multiple times with my 2016 dodge dart the last time was 2 months ago. This needs to be a recall.
I am reporting a serious safety concern involving a 2016 Dodge Dart GT (VIN: [XXX] ). The selling dealership represented the vehicle as accident‑free and undamaged, but after delivery I discovered significant, undisclosed front‑end and structural issues. The affected components include the front bumper, radiator support area, subframe, suspension, brakes, and cooling system. These components are available for inspection. My safety was put at risk because the vehicle shows clear evidence of prior impact and improper or incomplete repairs. A mechanic’s inspection documented a salvage‑yard front subframe installed for unknown reasons, a leaking lower radiator hose, rusted struts and shocks, suspension bushings beginning to fail, a bent left‑rear lower control arm, and brakes that “feel like they don’t want to stop the vehicle,” possibly due to rusted rotors and pads. The mechanic also noted alarming rust inside the frame and stated that the rust alone would justify returning the vehicle. All four tires show high/low spots consistent with belt separation, creating a wobble at speed. These conditions create multiple safety hazards: compromised crash protection, potential airbag sensor misalignment from prior front‑end impact, cooling‑system failure risk, loss of braking ability, suspension instability, and possible loss of control due to tire belt separation. The Carfax also shows a radiator replacement shortly before sale, strongly suggesting a front‑end collision that was not disclosed. The problem was confirmed by an independent service center. The manufacturer, police, and insurance have not yet inspected the vehicle. No warning lamps appeared prior to discovering these issues; the defects were concealed and UNKNOWN to me at purchase. I unknowingly operated a vehicle with compromised structural integrity and multiple safety‑critical defects, placing me and other drivers at risk. Transmission shift cable failure occurred on our 2016 Doge Dart. The vehicle was stuck in Drive and we were unable to shift the transmission to Park or Neutral, or to completely turn off or start the vehicle. I had to disconnect a battery to shut off the vehicle. This is part of an unrepaired Manufacturer recall A0C. The vehicle was towed to a dealer for repair; however, the dealer is refusing to repair the issue or replace any parts. The tow truck driver managed to re-attach the transmission cable to force the car into neutral during towing, and the dealer is stating that everything is fine and they will let us know when a remedy will be available. This is unacceptable. There needs to be a difference between a "vehicle may experience a transmission shift cable failure" vs. the vehicle that has already experienced the failure. On top of it the dealer is charging me a fee because they evaluated the vehicle. I contacted Stelantis customer service about the recall and they are basically telling me there is nothing they can do and just deal with it. Stelantis Case# 95608092. This vehicle is unsafe to operate and the manufacturer or the dealer are unwilling to even attempt a repair.
I received a safety recall on my vehicle in October, and it is now almost february and there is still no remedy. This safety recall is the Transmission Shift Cable A0C. The recall states: "This can cause an unexpected and unrecoverable loss of PARK function and/or vehicle movement in an unintended direction which can cause a vehicle crash without prior warning and/or injury to others outside the vehicle." This is putting myself and others at risk. The dealership has confirmed the issue and has no remedy. They informed me to wait for the remedy. My vehicle has been developing the symptoms of this recall for about 3 years. The key gets stuck in the ignition, the car does not go into or out of PARK easily, it sticks. After I park my car rolls backwards. My vehicle does not feel like its in park. The shifter has become stiff and does not want to move. The form says " do not drive" on mopars official recall. I do not feel safe driving this car.
I've noticed a decrease in power. My car won't go over 40 miles an hour; 3,000 Rpms. There had been no warnings prior or any engine codes that had popped up. I'm not sure why it started happening.
Car was wrecked at 85 miles a hour and rolled 7 times and not a single air bag deployed

I came home from work, (drove 18 miles) and parked, walked towards my building and I heard a noise, as if something turned on under the hood. Like a electrical motor spinning. And it was not the fan because that one had already turned off. I walk back to the car and pop the hood, white smoke starts coming out and in less than 2 minutes a huge flame comes straight out from the passenger side of the hood. Called the fire department. Fire was on for 4 minutes, neighbor mechanics came running with fire extinguishers and put out the fire before the firefighters arrived. Too many parts melted and damaged. So far estimate is at $4,000. I do not have the estimate on paper, since at the moment I did not have budget to fix my car. My car was perfectly fine, services got done regularly. Never had issues other than wear and tear. I've had that car for almost 10 years.
The shifter cable on my car has completely worn out so the gear box no longer shifts correctly. I took it to my local dealership, Watsonville Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, in Watsonville California and they said the remedy is not yet available. They also are trying to charge me $800 something dollars for a “temporary fix” and I can maybe apply for reimbursement
The contact owns a 2016 Dodge Dart. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V674000 (Power Train); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that while attempting to shift to park(P), the gear shifter was stuck and failed to move to the intended gear. The contact engaged the parking brake. The failure recurred while attempting to shift to drive(D) or reverse(R), rendering the vehicle undrivable. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact stated that the failure was intermittent, and the gear shifter would respond as intended after several attempts. The dealer was contacted and informed the contact that the vehicle could not be repaired because the part for the recall repair was not yet available. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.
The contact owns a 2016 Dodge Dart. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, the transmission shifter failed to shift out of park. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed with transmission shifter cable failure. The contact was informed that the transmission shifter cable needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The contact later received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V674000 (Power Train); however, parts were not yet available for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, and several cases were filed. The contact inquired about reimbursement for the out-of-pocket repair. The contact was informed that the reimbursement request was denied because the repair was not performed by the dealer. The failure mileage was approximately 54,079.
UNKNOWN. When trying to switch gears from reverse to drive, the gear got stuck in neutral. My gear shift is able to move when pressing on the brake as it is intended to do. However, the actual gear does not change and on the dashboard and the light display from the gear shift still shows "N" for neutral. My brake lights are still working and the solenoid still clicks when pressing on brake. I was able to shift gears manually from underneath the hood. I did a complete complete reset and still the gears do not change. My e-brake is on and the car has not moved due to not being able to shift gears. This has never happened before and there have been no problems with my steering wheel, brakes or gear shift before. There were/are no warning messages or displays. Even though, there is a recall, dealerships have told me that there is nothing wrong with my car and there are no recalls at all. I am currently looking for a mobile mechanic since my car is unable to move. My car has not been seen yet.
Shifting shaft linkage shaft bushing shaft stuck in park won’t shift anymore shaft moves but won’t come out of park
The contact owns a 2016 Dodge Dart. The contact stated that while driving and depressing the brake pedal to come to a stop, the vehicle jerked and hesitated to respond. Additionally, the contact stated that upon shifting to park(P), the vehicle tugged and hesitated while responding. There was no warning light illuminated. The dealer was contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 90,000.
My shifter cable snapped while driving home from work. Found out about the recall trying to get it fixed.
The shifter cable. It is not available for inspection at no cost through any dealership I have contacted through the FCA. This can cause an unexpected and unrecoverable loss of park function and/or vehicle movement in an unintended direction which can cause a vehicle crash without prior warning and/or injury to others outside of the vehicle. I received a letter notification of this recall A0C/NHTSA 25v-674, which applies to my vehicle. Dodge stated that the remedy for this condition is not currently available. The vehicle has not been inspected after the recall was issued. There were no warnings, messages or any symptoms.
Open recall for transmission shift cable failure since October 9, 2025 with no available fix/parts yet. This is my 20 year old's vehicle and we feel this is extremely unsafe and are requesting a manufacturer buy-back immediately.
The contact owns a 2016 Dodge Dart. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V674000 (POWER TRAIN); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The local dealer was contacted. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure.
I have less than 55,000 miles on this vehicle, and my shift linkage bushing has failed, making it so my car is stuck in gear and the shifter inside the vehicle will not work at all. There was a recall in 2019 for this issue, and it seems it hasn’t been satisfactorily remedied and another recall should happen. I purchased the vehicle one year ago (Oct 2024) from a Honda Dealership. This should definitely not be happening with a car less than 10 years old with less than 55,000 miles. It has made my car inoperable. Luckily I was backing into a fuel station spot when this happened, so I was going very slowly. I just was not able to remove my key, start the car, or drive it afterwards.
The transmission shift cable does not work on the vehicle and will not shift out of gear, Unable to use vehicle due to the break in the cable.
I had the recall for the transmission bushing shifter cable fixed at Greenway Dodge. Clearly still a defective piece. It broke again… they’re trying to charge me $850+ to fix it again. I can’t afford that for this car that’s been nothing but a lemon. Why should i have to pay for a repeatedly defective part? It’s wrong.
On 9/25/2025, I was on my way home from the grocery store, stopped off in a different section of my condo complex to check the mail. I attempted to place the car in park. The handle moved forward but the gears did not shift. I still had my foot on the brakes and put on my the emergency brakes on. I contacted AAA, paid the $100 so AAA could tow the car in front of my property. It was still very hot outside and I did not want the food I just brought to spoil so I took most of the perishable food that I could carry to my home. Once I put all the food away in the fridge the Porter knocked on my door telling me that I could not leave my car near the mailboxes. I let him know I had already contacted AAA and was waiting for them to arrive. Well the porter immediately had my car towed before AAA could get there. My car was towed and is still in the tow company’s possession.
Went to drive home from work. Started car and shifted from park to drive but car stayed in park. Shifted back to park and back to drive and the transmission did shift to drive. Didn’t think much of it until I got home. I attempted to put vehicle in park and the shifter moved up but the car stayed in drive. Big orange D. I was able to turn off while the gear shifter was in the park position but the transmission was still in drive. I googled it and found out shifter bearing failed but I was able to manually shift the transmission into park. This was a recall fix but it failed again.
I am the second owner to own this car had it for 4 months only 27,000 miles i called my dealer to see about the gear shifting cable recall that happened but they said it was fixed in 2019, my car was driving fine now it is no longer shifting out of park i think the recall was not done correctly
My 2016 Dodge Dart had the shift cable bushing replaced under Recall V34 (NHTSA 19V-293) in December 2024. This week (July 2025), the opposite end of the same shift cable assembly failed, leaving the vehicle stuck in Reverse, unable to start or shift. I was stranded with my three children and had to manually override the transmission to transport the vehicle to the dealership. The dealership confirmed the failure was not the recalled bushing, but instead the other end of the same shift cable system, and refused to cover the repair under the recall. This is a clear safety-related issue involving the same defective shift cable design — one that causes loss of control over transmission gear selection, puts drivers at risk of rollaway, and disables vehicle starting. Dodge/FCA refused to cover the repair, claiming the recall only included one specific bushing, but this is a systemic failure of the same critical control system and should be addressed under an expanded or amended recall. This issue is the exact same symptoms of the original reason for the first recall.
Today, 7-12-25, I tried to place my 2016 Dodge Dart in park. The car would not go into park, and I could not get the key out after trying to turn it off. The Shifter would not go into Drive, and was stuck in Reverse. I had the car repaired for a Recall on the Shifter Cable Bushing at my Local Dodge Dealer a few years back, and now it's doing the same thing it was prior to the Recall. Car is now stuck in a parking lot.
The contact owns a 2016 Dodge Dart. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V674000 (Power Train); however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to AutoZone to test the battery, alternator, and transmission fluid. A mechanic diagnosed that the thermostat was sticking. The vehicle was then taken to another mechanic, who replaced an AC cord due to liquid leaking from underneath the vehicle. This mechanic suggested replacing the thermostat if the check engine warning light remained illuminated. While at a stop sign, the vehicle jerked before accelerating, and while driving approximately 35-45 MPH. The vehicle was driven to the mother's residence, where the vehicle remained for 3 days before being restarted. The vehicle remained parked for approximately a week before the contact drove back to the residence, and the check engine warning light and the battery light were illuminated. The vehicle remained parked while the wheel bearing, headlights, and oil change were repaired. A certified mechanic replaced the thermostat, and another inspected the vehicle but could not identify any other failures. After the repair was completed, the contact noticed that the vehicle continued to jerk while driving at various speeds, and the sensation was more prominent whenever the AC unit was activated. While driving approximately 35 MPH and attempting to accelerate, the vehicle decelerated, the battery light illuminated, and the vehicle lost power. The contact was able to restart the vehicle and coast downhill into their grandmother's driveway nearby. After waiting a minute, the contact started the vehicle and was able to drive to the residence, approximately 5 minutes away, at 20 MPH to avoid additional failure. The vehicle was taken to AutoZone, where no battery or alternator failure was found. The mechanic suggested it might be an electrical failure, which was supported by previous window closing and opening failures and key fob failure to lock the vehicle. However, because the key fob battery had been replaced, but the contact did not initially assume the failure could be related to the most recent issue. The vehicle was repaired. The contact continued driving the vehicle with the battery warning light was flashing intermittently. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and confirmed that the part was not yet available. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.
The contact owns a 2016 Dodge Dart. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, her son heard an abnormal popping coming from the engine after the vehicle was started. In addition, while attempting to move the gear shifter, the gear shifter failed to function as intended. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed and determined that the shifter cable had fractured and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired due to the cost. Upon further investigation, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V293000 (Power Train); however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was approximately 57,000.
Transmission shift cable
The contact owns a 2016 Dodge Dart. The contact stated that upon arriving to his destination and attempting to shift into reverse, the shift lever failed to move to the desired position. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 60,000.
My windshield wipers stopped working. I have tested the motor and the multi switch. They’re all functioning. There is a recall for windshield wipers just not for my VIN number same make and model
The car keeps stalling and several scans, thousands into repairs to include the dealership itself. I’m convinced that it’s one of the recalls re: power train and engine keeps randomly stalling. This is a huge safety concern that will result in an accident. It happens after start up, at stop lights and signs And randomly throughout driving. I don’t feel safe and I’m taking it back to the dealership to do the job right .
Electrical system crashes which makes the car lose the ability to brake, accelerate, and steer. The center display and general display both go out at random times. Sometimes more issues are prevalent when this happens and sometimes less. I do have several videos of this issue occurring.
The backup camera constantly fails. The possibility of a blackout screen due to the poor connection to the camera keep increasing.
The Dodge dart has a malfunction that might have contributed in many crashes this car has been involved in. The issue is that some darts will experience a malfunction where the lights inside the car will randomly flicker (should they be on), digital dash will also flicker and navigation screen will either restart or just shut off. The biggest problem in all of this is that the power steering will always temporarily shut off and make it extremely hard to steer the car for a few seconds and this can happen during turns. The reset can also happen many times in a row forcing the power steering to be shut down for multiple seconds longer than the avg like 5-8 seconds. within that reset all lights on the dash will flick on and off and if you have cruise control on, it will shut off permanently until you restart the car. Sometimes the reset doesn't successfully turn on and the navigation will remain off indefinitely and will blast hot air into your cabin forcing you to park and restart your car. If your dart slows down to a stop the power steering will shut off forcing you to attempt to park your car with an extremely stiff power steering or you can restart your car for a chance to regain some assitance from the PS. Sometimes putting the car in reverse shuts off the car. The issue that the car displays when these errors occur is "Service Power Steering" or "Service Electronic Braking System" weird request when the braking is just fine. Dealership cannot diagnose this issue because the codes seemingly clear themselves as if nothing has ever happened. I have found a few others with similar issues to mine on Reddit as well as The Dodge dart forums. This issue also happens at random. There isn't a trigger or requirement for it to happen. You can be sitting at a parking lot with the car on in park and it might just reset itself for no reason and give you a stiff wheel.
Brake booster
Since my purchase of this vehicle over two years ago, I have consistently had problems with the card shutting off while driving. It has happened no less than six times, two within the last week. Each time I have been fortunate enough to get the car to the side of the road, restart it and then continue with no immediate shut down. My local dealer has tried without success, to pinpoint the problem, but since no codes show up, they are at a loss as to what the problem may be. My grandfather, who is writing this for me, has found a number of similar complaints with Darts of various years and models. The issue is never resolved by the dealerships and the manufacturer has no known service bulletins on file. We are not sure of any accidents, but a car shutting off without advanced notice and no viable reason for the loss of power looks like a serious safety issue just waiting to claim one or more lives. The insurance company was told, but they won't do anything. If I have an accident I will probably be at fault, especially if I am blocking another vehicle's right of way. I need guidance on what legal recourse, if any that I have. The vehicle does not qualify for the PA Lemon Laws since it was purchased as a new vehicle from the dealer. Please let us know what we can do short of junking an obvious safety hazard that I still owe $13,000 in a car loan. Thank you. Airbags. The light did not come on upon start up of vehicle. Electrical. My radio, display on dashboard and Bluetooth would blink off and on. I think that my sons safety and mine were at risk because of the malfunctioning of the airbags if an accident would have occurred they wouldn't deploy. I took it into the dealer, but they didn't seem concerned. They fixed some things and it costs around $3500. The only thing I noticed was the flashing off and on of the dashboard display which shows your speed and mileage on the vehicle and my airbag light did not display at all. My VIN number was covered up with a sticker on the dashboard of my vehicle as well and the one on the drivers door was missing. My car was stolen from Ohio and I found it in Oregon at Capitol Toyota. Dodge Dart 2016.
THE TRANSMISSION GEAR IS NOTB SHIFTINGB AND THE CAR IS CUTTING OFF OIN THE FREEWAY AND ALSO AT STOP SIGNS AND STOP LIGHTS. OIL CHANGES AND TRANSMISSION FLUIDS HAVE BEEN CHECKED AND CHANGED PROBLEM STILL HAPPENING.
Gear jumped into neutral and then reverse while driving and got stuck in reverse .
Was stopped, with foot on brake dropping kids off at school Heard a pop and hiss. Brake pedal became rock hard, and car rolled into kids crossing road for the school. I seen this issue is for 2013-2014 It should be extended to include 2015-2016 also. As they continued to install parts with known issues until the car was dissolved. I have attempted to source parts. All brake boosters for this car have been recalled, with no timeline for remedy. Part 77215 I have also tried the dealership, they said none available and don't offer a timeline. This car is still financed, and now unrepairable. How is that even a thing?
This complaint is additional information for original complaint 11535053 7/28/2023 I have diagnosed the issue I have taken pictures of the entire brake booster that failed, and have held on to the parts for the investigation. The vehicle had the updated vacuum line. Still oil present in brake booster.
Oil contamination was found it then take booster and check valve causing low brake pedal and the brake pedal to fall to the floor. The 2013 and 2014 dodge darts with a 2.4l engine had a recall. Recall number R63 / NHTSA 15V-800. “The brake booster on your vehicle may experience engine oil migration from the vacuum pump, through the vacuum supply tube, and into the brake booster. Prolonged brake booster diaphragm exposure to engine oil could cause the diaphragm to fail. This could lead to a loss of brake booster assist and/or an air leaking sound. A loss of brake booster assist could require the driver to apply additional brake pedal force to stop the vehicle. The lack of brake booster assist could change the braking characteristics of the vehicle and cause a crash without warning.” This recall needs to be extended to the 2016 models. I no longer feel safe driving this vehicle and there are no brake boosters available through the dealerships or after market.
The contact owns a 2016 Dodge Dart. The contact stated that while depressing the brake pedal, the brakes failed to stop the vehicle immediately. The vehicle proceeded forward while making a clunking sound before coming to a stop. The ABS failed to respond as needed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the brake booster was contaminated with oil. The contact was informed that the brake booster vacuum line and pump needed to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 42,000.
I purchased a 2016 dodge dart 1.4l turbo with 6 speed manual transmission from carvana 2 years ago they gave me a carfax for the vehicle but I've been having multiple issues with the vehicle in the past year so I purchased my own carfax and while lookin it over I noticed there r several things that were replaced on the car the the original carfax didn't show but did show some maintenance done on the same day.on my new carfax it shows the clutch assembly was all replaced right before the previous owner sold the vehicle upon further research I've come to find out that the dart models with the c635 engine and transmission combo has a factory defects, there was only 38,000 miles on the car when the previous owner had these parts replaced and at the moment the car has 75,000 miles and the clutch system is not functioning again. I don't understand why this vehicle was not recalled with the others of its kind
The contact owns a 2016 Dodge Dart. The contact stated while at a stop light and shifting into drive(D), the vehicle failed to shift into gear. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, who informed the contact that the vehicle needed to be inspected prior to completing the recall repair under NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V293000 (Power Train). The contact related the failure to the recall. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was approximately 90,000. Parts distribution disconnect.
The contact owns a 2016 Dodge Dart. The contact stated that while shifting into reverse, the accelerator pedal was depressed, and the engine revved; however, the vehicle failed to respond. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to Tires Plus where it was diagnosed, and it was determined that the clutch had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unavailable.
There was no accident in this case. We lost brakes with no warning and the brake pedal got hard to press. So we changed brake pads and calibers in rear because had not be but few months on front brakes. Still no brakes they was then bleed to be sure and had little brakes and drove it home and the abs code came up and brakes went to floor. I then took it to mechanic and they check code and was abs service and he check abs brake module and was fine he then replaced the vacuum pump and still a hard brake pedal with further investigation he says the master cylinder and brake booster needs to be replaced. In doing some research on the dodge dart there is a recall for 2012-2014 dodge darts brake system which involves the vacuum pump and master cylinder and brake booster. We was able to avoid a accident but what if there are other darts the same year as ours with same issues and aren’t as lucky.
