TRANSMISSION NEEDING COMPLETE OVERHAUL AT 55,000 MILES
FATAL ONE VEHICLE ACCIDENT OCCURRED ON JANUARY 25, 2002 INVOLVING THE 2000 DODGE DURANGO RT. CONSUMER LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND HIT A TREE.*MR THE MOTHER OF THE DECEASED RECEIVED A RECALL ALMOST THREE YEARS AFTER THE ACCIDENT ON THE UPPER BALL JOINTS. SHE BELIEVES THAT THE BALL JOINTS IN HER SON'S VEHICLE MAY HAVE BEEN DEFECTED AND CAUSED HIM TO LOSE CONTROL OF HIS VEHICLE. *NM
TRANSMISSION "GRABBING" AND "SLIPPING" IN ALL GEARS. MOST NOTICABLE ON THE HIGHWAY. TRANSMISSION GOES FROM OVERDRIVE TO ONE AND SOMETIMES TWO LOWER GEARS AT HIGHWAY SPEED. VEHILCLE WILL JUMP AND SPUTTER. VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO DEALER WHO DID NOT GET IT REPAIRED. IT WAS ALSO TAKEN TO MY LOCAL MECHANIC, WHO SAYS IT'S A LEMON. (I HAVE NO FAITH IN THE DEALER WHO SOLD ME THE GARBAGE AFTER THEY CLAIMED TO HAVE NOT FIGURED MY FIANANCING CORRECTLY ABD HIT ME WITH A $975 ADDITIONAL FEE.) ELLENVILLE DODGE. *AK

BEGINNING 2002 DRIVER'S SIDE POWER WINDOW WOULD NEVER WORK PROPERLY. CONSTANTLY GETTING STUCK IN THE DOWN POSITION. I HAD IT FIXED IN 2003. NOW THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE POWER WINDOW IS DOING THE SAME THING. IS THIS SOMETHING BEING INVESTIGATED? I KNOW OF TWO OTHER PEOPLE THAT HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THEIR DURANGO. *AK
CONSUMER WAS TRAVELING ABOUT 15MPH ON A HIGHWAY AND WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING TIRE EXPLODED AND BLEWOUT. CONSUMER WAS IN CONTROL OF VEHICLE. GOODYEAR TIRE MECHANIC TOLD CONSUMER THAT THERE WAS A SMALL PUNTCTURE INSIDE OF TREAD OF TIRE. GOODYEAR TIRE EXPLODED, AND CAME COMPLETELY APART ON BOTH SIDES. DEALERSHIP WA SAWARE OF PROBLEM. *AK
TRAVELING WEST ON I-80, APPROX. 10 MILES FROM SHARON PA. THE LEFT FRONT TIRE BLEW UP AND SHREDDED. THERE WAS NO INDICATION OF AIR PRESSURE LOSS (IE; PULLING) PRIOR TO THE BLOWOUT AND UNWRAVELING OF THE TIRE. I HAD ALL I COULD DO TO MAINTAIN CONTROL AND GET TO THE RIGHT SIDE BERM. THERE WERE FIVE OF US IN THE VEHICLE. MY ISSUE IS WITH THE TIRE MANUFACTURER, NOT CHRYSLER CORP. I WAS ADVISED BY THE DODGE DEALER I DID NOT PURCHASE THE EXTENDED TIRE WARRANTY. AS AN OWNER OF A LARGE INDEPENDENT AUTOMOTIVE SERVICE REPAIR AND COLLISION SHOP, WE EXAMINED THE TIRE CLOSELY. WE NOTED A AN OBJECT APRX. 1/4" DIAMETER TAPERING TO A RELATIVE POINT THAT PUNCTURED THE TREAD OF THE TIRE. IT TURNED OUT TO BE A DRIED SMALL ANIMAL BONE. A HUNTER/FRIEND ADVISED ME IT APPEARS TO BE A SMALL BONE FROM A BIRD. WE HAVE SEEN MANY PUNCTURES, BLOWOUTS AT CITY AND HI-WAY SPEEDS, BUT NEVER A TIRE "UNWRAVELED" LIKE THIS. IT LOOKS VERY MUCH LIKE ALL THE PICTURES INVOLVING THE FIRESTONE/FORD FIASCO. I AM ONLY LOOKING FOR ANSWERS. I NOW HAVE RESERVATIONS IN GENERAL ABOUT THE TIRES. WHILE DRIVING AT 20MPH ABS BRAKES LOCKED UP, CAUSING CONSUMER TO LOSE CONTROL OF VEHICLE. VEHICLE HAD FRONTAL DAMAGE. MY HUSBAND WAS DRIVING OUR CAR AND WAS APPROACHING A RED LIGHT,AT 20 MILES PER HOUR. AS THE LIGHT CHANGED TO RED HE PRESSED DOWN ON THE BRAKES AND IT DID NOT SLOW DOWN ANY, HE PROCEEDED TO GO THROUGH THE LIGHT APPLYING MORE PRESSURE TO THE BRAKES WHICH FAILED HIM. HE LEFT TIRE MARKS ON THE ROAD FOR ABOUT 37 FT AND ENDED UP HITTING A VEHICLE AND IN THE END THERE WERE 4 VEHICLES TOTAL. I HAVE RESEARCHED ON LINE AND HAVE FOUND OUT THAT THERE HAVE BEEN PROBLEMS WITH THE REAR BRAKES ON DODGE DURANGO'S THAT WERE MADE IN 1999. OUR DURANGO IS A 2000 BUT WAS MANUFACTURED IN DECEMBER 1999. WE FEEL THAT IN LIGHT OF THIS INFO, WE SHOULD HAVE RECIEVED SOME FORM OF RECALL LETTER FROM THE DEALERS WHICH WE HAVE NOT AS YET. WE ARE NOT SURE OF THE TOTAL COST OF THE ACCIDENT AS YET, SO THE FIGURES ARE JUST QUOTES SO FAR. *AK

VEHICLE WAS PARKED AND SUDDENLY IGNITED. DEALER WAS CONTACTED, AND STATED COMPONENTS AROUND ALTERNATOR WERE BLEEDING. PLEASE PROVIDE FURTHER DETAILS.*AK
THERE WAS NO WARNING, OIL PRESSURE LIGHT JUST CAME ON AND WE LOST PRESSURE. THEN THERE WAS A KNOCKING NOISE UNDER THE HOOD. WE HAD IT TOWED TO HERB GORDON DODGE, WHICH SAID THE ENGINE WAS A TOTAL LOSS. I HAD TO DRIVE IT HOMEAND THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. I CALLED FITZGERALD TO SEE IF I WAS COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. THEY SAID BRING IT IN, SO I HAD IT TOWED TO THE DEALER. THEY SAID THE WARRRANTY WOULDN'T COVER IT BECAUSE I COULD NOT PRODUCE 15 MAINTENANCE RECEIPTS. I HAD A FULL SERVICE ENGINE FLUSH AT 32,727 MILES. THEY DID NOT CARE, BUT SAID THEY COULD GIVE ME A NEW ENGINE AT $6000 OR A PATCHUP AT $4200. THE SERVICE MANAGER ALSO OFFERED TO PUT ME IN CONTACT WITH A COMPANY THAT WILL FINANCE ENGINES.*AK
WHILE DRIVING, CONSUMER SMELLED GAS AND PULLED OVER, CONSUMER LOOKED UNDER THE HOOD AND THE VEHICLE WAS ON FIRE, CLAIM 75-A422-019. *SLC

WHILE INSURED WAS TRAVELING, HE SMELLED GAS. INSURED EXITED VEHICLE AND LOOKED UNDER THE HOOD, VEHICLE WAS ON FIRE, CLAIM 75-A422-019. *JG
I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AND WITHOUT ANY WARNING THE VEHICLE CAUGHT FIRE UNDER THE HOOD. I LOST STEERING AND BRAKES. WAS ABLE TO RUN VEHICLE INTO CURB AND JUST GOT OUT BEFORE THINGS STARTED BLOWING UP. THE VEHICLE WAS COMPLETLY DISTROYED. I REPORTED THE INCIDENT TO MY INSURANCE AND A FEW DAYS LATER I WAS CONTACTED BY A INVISTAGATOR FROM DAIMLER CHRYSLER WHO STATED THAT THEY WANTED TO REPLACE MY VEHICLE BECAUSE THE FIRE WAS THERE FAULT. THIS STATEMENT LEAD ME TO BELEAVE DAIMLER CHRYSLER KNOWS ABOUT A PROBLEM AND WANT TO KEEP IT VERY QUITE. I WAS TOLD IF I TALK TO ANY ONE THE DEAL WOULD BE OFF. AS OF NOW I STILL DO NOT HAVE MY REPLACEMENT VEHICLE. DAIMLER CHRYSLER IS INSISTING I TAKE A VEHICLE OF LESSER VALUE THAT MY DURANGO. ANY INFORMATION REGUARDING THIS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRICIATED. I FEEL LIKE I AM AT THE MERCY OF A VERY POWERFUL CORPORATION.*AK
I HAD A LOT OF CHATTERING AND GRINDING NOISES IN BOTH THE FRONT AND REAR DIFFERENTIAL. THE DEALER CHECKED THE PROBLEM AND FOUND OUT THAT THE DIFFERENTIAL FLUID NEEDED TO BE CHANGED DUE TO THE VISCOSITY BEING WEAK AND RECOMMENDED THAT IT BE CHANGED AND ADDITIVE BE DONE. UPON FINDING THIS OUT THEY ALSO SAID THAT THIS FLUID WOULD HAVE TO BE CHANGED EVERY 30,000 MILES. MY COST FOR THIS PROBLEM WAS $400.00. IT WAS NOT SPECIFIED IN THE OWNER'S MANUAL THAT THIS HAD TO BE DONE AT ALL.*AK
I WAS DRIVING MY 2000 DODGE DURANGO ON THE FREEWAY AT APPROX. 70MPH. SUDDENLY, THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED TO FULL THROTTLE ON ITS OWN. THE CRUISE CONTROL WAS NOT ENGAGED. MY FOOT WAS OFF THE GAS PEDAL AND THE CAR KEPT ACCELERATING. I TAPPED THE GAS PEDAL WITH MY FOOT TO ATTEMPT TO RAISE IT WITH NO EFFECT. I DOWN SHIFTED TO SECOND GEAR WITH NO EFFECT. I ENGAGED AND DISENGAGED THE CRUISE CONTROL WITH NO EFFECT. THE ONLY WAY I COULD PREVENT THE CAR FROM CONTINUING TO ACCELERATE WAS TO BRAKE AND RELEASE WHILE I CROSSED THREE LANES OF TRAFFIC. AT NO TIME DID I HAVE MY FOOT ON THE GAS PEDAL. AS I EXITED THE FREEWAY IT BECAME INCREASINGLY DIFFICULT TO CONTROL THE CAR WHILE FIGHTING THE ENGINE POWER WITH THE BRAKE PRESSURE. I SHUT THE ENGINE OFF AND COASTED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. WE COULD HAVE EASILY HAD A COLLISION AND WE ARE FORTUNATE NO ONE WAS HURT AS A RESULT OF THIS VERY SERIOUS SAFETY DEFECT. *AK
CWHILE MOTHER WAS DRIVING ABOUT 15 MPH RIGHT FRONT TIRE COLLAPSED WITH WHEEL DISCONNECTING FROM VEHICLE . HAD TO BE TOWED TO DEALER, AND THEY COULD NOT DETERMINE WHAT HAD CAUSED DISATTACHMENT. ACCORDING TO CONSUMER, THEY JUST FIXED, MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED. PLEASE PROVIDE MORE INFORMATION.*AK EA03-023
WHEN REQUIRING TO STOP QUICKLY, FRONT BRAKES LOCK UP, AND VEHICLE SKIDS, REAR ANTI-LOCKS WORK BUT DONT KEEP VEHICLE FROM SKIDDING. CLICKING NOISE FROM UNDER DASH WHEN THIS HAPPENS. HAVE HAD SEVERAL ACCIDENTS DUE TO THIS PROBLEM. EVEN AT 35 MPH ON DRY STREET THEY STILL LOCK UP. DEALER WOULDNT TALK TO ME, REFERED ME TO DODGE COMPLAINTS, THEY TESTED THE BRAKE SYSTEM AND READ THAT THE COMPUTER SHOWED NO FAILURE IN BRAKING SYSTEM.
AROUND 30,000 MILES, NOTICED INNER TREADS OF FRONT TIRES WERE GETTING LOW. HAD ALIGNMENT DONE AROUND 20,000 MILES AND THEY SAID IT WASN'T NECCESSARY. WENT FOR ANOTHER ALIGNMENT AT 44,000 BECAUSE INNER TREADS WERE NOW BALD. REPLACED TIRES AND HAD ALIGNMENT DONE. PROBLEM, RIGHT BALL JOINT IS JUST ABOUT HANGING OFF. BOOT COVER IS FULLY STRETCHED. MECHANIC CAN'T DO ALIGNMENT. DODGE SAYS NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR (OUT OF WARRANTY). I DON'T THINK SO, NOTICED ALIGNMENT PROBLEM FROM START. SEEMS DODGE FEELS PULLING IS NORMAL WHEN DRIVING.*AK
I HAVE TAKEN MY 2000 DODGE DURANGO TO FOREST LAKE DODGE DEALER FOR A CLUNKING NOISE IN MY FRONT END OVER YEAR AGO. I HAD A NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS. THEY SAID AT THAT TIME THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG. THEY COULDN'T HEAR ANYTHING. AGAIN WITHIN A COUPLE MONTHS I RETURNED WITH THE SAME PROBLEM ALONG WITH MY PASSENGER WINDOW NOT GOING UP OR DOWN CORRECTLY. ONCE AGAIN THEY SAID OH YOU NEED SHOCKS AND YOU NEED YOUR SERVICE OF WARRENTY PROFORMED OR YOUR WARRENTLY WONT BE ANY GOOD, SO I SAID YES DO WHAT IS UNDER WARRENTY NOTHING ELSE UNLESS I SAY IT OK, WILL MORE WORK WAS PROFORMED AND I ENDED UP PAYING HUNDRED PLUS DOLLARS OUT OF POCKET. AGAIN THEY SAID THERE WAS NO CLUCKING NOISE NOTED AND THAT THE PASSENGER WINDOW ACCORDING TO THE COMPUTER SAID IT FUNCTIONS CORRECTLY. WILL TO THIS DAY OVER A YEAR LATER, THE CLUCK IS THERE AND SHOCKS AND OTHER MAINTENCE WAS COMPLETED, THE PASSENGER WINDOW MOVES SO SLOW THAT WE DONT USE IT AS IT HAS AND STILL DOES QUIT WORKING. INSIDE WHERE THE 4 WHEEL DRIVE COMPOTENT ALSO COMES LOOSE FROM THE MAIN FLOOR. I WAS TOLD THAT I WOULD HAVE TO PURCHASE A NEW MANTO WHICH SCREWS TO THE FRAME OF THE DURANGO. I HAD SIDE STEPS PUT ON AFTER PURCHASE BY CHRY. DODGE IN FORREST LAKE AND DRIVERS SIDE WITHIN IN ONE AND HALF YEARS FELL LOOSE AND THEY SAID I JUST NEEDED TO HAVE SOMEONE PUT IN NEW SCREWS THAT IT WASN;T COVERED. YET WHEN I PURCHASED THEM THEY SAID THAT IF THEY DID IT, ANYTHING THAT MAY HAPPEN WOULD BE COVERED BUT IF SOMEONE ELSE DID IT THEY WOULDNT COVER ANYTHING THAT HAPPENED.*AK
WARPED FRONT BRAKE ROTORS ARE CAUSING SEVERE VIBRATION IN THE BRAKE PEDAL. DEALER DOES NOT RECOMEND RESURFACING BECAUSE THERE IS INSUFFICIENT MATERIAL AND THINNING THE ROTORS WILL COMPOUND THE PROBLEM. DEALER SAYS REPLACEMENT PARTS WILL LAST JUST AS LONG BASED ON DRIVING HABITS. NAPA SELLS ROTORS WITH A LIFETIME WARRANTY. THE ROTORS FROM THE FACTORY ARE A SAFETY PROBLEM THAT DODGE IS PASSING OFF ON THE CUSTOMER. NO WELL MAINTAINED VEHICLE SHOULD NEED TO HAVE NEW ROTORS INSTALLED AT JUST OVER 20,000 MILES.
WHILE PARKED AND IDLING A 3YEAR OLD CHILD WAS ABLE TO SHIFT VEHICLE OUT OF PARK INTO DRIVE, AND WITHOUT APPLYING BRAKE PEDAL, VEHICLE WENT INTO A CORN FIELD BEFORE STOPPING; DEALER WAS NOT NOTIFIED AT THIS TIME. FEEL FREE TO PROVIDE ANY FURTHER INFORMATION ON THIS MATTER.*AK
SEPTEMBER 13, 2001 MY HUSBAND CURTIS JOYNER WAS KILLED IN A CRASH IN HERNANDO, MS DUE TO POOR WHEEL BASE STRUCTURE AND POOR WHEEL BALANCE STRUCTURE OF DURANGO'S OF HANDLING CURVES, WAS STATED BY ACCIDENT RECONSTRUCTING CREW THAT'S WHAT CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO ROLLOVER IN CURVES. I HIRED ATTORNEY MCGRAW OF OLIVEBRANCH, MS; WHO LATER STATED HE DID NOT HAVE THE TIME TO PUT INTO THIS MATTER, BUT WAS CERTAINLY A GOOD CASE. I EMAILED DATELINE REGARDING THIS MATTER ALSO. I SAY ONE NIGHT ON THEIR SHOW WHERE THEY SHOWED HOW THE DURANGO'S DID NOT PASS THE CRASH IN CURVES OR ON THE ROAD. *NM
WHILE TRAVELING AT 65 MPH VEHICLE RAN OFF THE ROAD AND INTO A TREE HEAD-ON, BUT SEAT BELT DID NOT WORK PROPERLYAND DID NOT RESTRAIN CONSUMER. CONSUMER WAS INJURED, AND VEHICLE WAS TOTALED. PLEASE PROVIDE MORE INFORMATION.*AK

SQUEAK NOT HEARD CONSTANTLY BUT IS HEARD MORE THAN PERIODICALLY. *AK

MY 2YR OLD DAUGHTER WAS SEATBELTED IN MIDDLE SEAT IN A CAR SEAT. WHEN I HAD THE WRECK, THE SEATBELT THAT WAS HOLDING THE CARSEAT CAME UNBUCKLED. WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED, CONSUMER CAN HEAR A CLICKING SOUND COMING FROM THE FRONT WHEELS. A MECHANIC EXAMINED THE VEHICLE AND FOUND THAT THE BALL JOINTS WERE WORN ON BOTH SIDES. THE CONSUMER ALSO FOUND OUT THAT THE CLOCK SPRING IS DEFECTIVE IN THE VEHICLE. *LA *TS
PULLED INTO GARAGE AND CAR WOULD NOT GO INTO PARK, REVERSE, DRIVE, ETC. - DIGITAL GAUGE ON THE DASH SHOWED THAT THE CAR WAS IN GEAR 1. THE CAR FELT LIKE IT WAS IN PARK ALTHOUGH WE HAD A DIFFICULT TIME TURNING THE CAR OFF SINCE GEARS WOULD NOT WORK PROPERLY. EVEN THOUGH THE CAR WAS IN PARK, IT WAS ABLE TO BE ROCKED BACK AND FORTH AS IF IT WAS IN NEUTRAL.WE HAD IT TOWED AWAY ON A FLATBED TO THE DEALER SINCE WE WERE NOT ABLE TO DRIVE IT. WE WERE TOLD THAT A PART SNAPPED IN THE STEERING COLUMN. WE'VE COMPLAINED TO DEALER ON TWO SEPARATE OCCASIONS (MILEAGE 5963 AND 14120) ABOUT THE PROBLEMS IN THE STEERING COLUMN PORTION OF THE VEHICLE - THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT COULDN'T DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM, AND TOLD US NOT TO WORRY ABOUT IT... IT MAKES ME WONDER WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF I WAS DRIVING (WITH MY TWO SMALL CHILDREN) WHEN THIS PART SNAPPED??*AK

CONSUMER'S CHILD WAS ABLE TO TAKE VEHICLE OUT OF PARK AND PUT IT INTO REVERSE WHILE SHE WAS BEING BUCKLED INTO A CHILD SAFETY SEAT. VEHICLE STARTED ROLLING BACKWARDS. CONSUMER WAS ABLE TO STOP VEHICLE. PLEASE PROVIDE ANY ADDITIONAL INFORMATION/ATTACHMENTS. *AK
ENGINE HAS HAD A MISS IN IT SINCE WE PURCHASED THE CAR. WE HAVE TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALER 3 TIMES COMPLAINING, WITH THE FIRST ONE WAS BEFORE IT HAD 2000 MILES ON THE CAR. THE DEALERSHIP TOLD US THE FIRST TIME THAT IT WOULD/DID NOT SHOW UP ON THE COMPUTER UNTIL IT HAD OVER 2000 MILES ON THE CAR. SO DRIVE IT UNTIL THEN, AND IF IT STILL DID IT BRING IT BACK IN. WE BROUGHT IT BACK IN AT 3,803 MILES,7,596 MILES AND THEN AT 18,275. AT 7,596 MILES THEY REPROGRAMMED THE CAR AND TOLD US TO USE UNLEADED PLUS GAS INSTEAD OF REGULAR. IT DID NO GOOD TO CHANGE THE GRADE OF GAS. THEN WE BROUGHT IT BACK IN AT 18,275 MILES WITH 4 DIFFERENT PROBLEMS AND THEY CHANGED THE FAN CLUTCH. THE CAR STILL MISSED AFTER THIS. THE DEALERSHIP TOLD US AT THIS TIME THAT THEY HAD 3 OTHER CARS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM AND THAT CHRYSLER DOES NOT KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM IS AND CAN NOT FIX IT. AS FAR AS THE CLOCK SPRING, THEY WERE GOING TO REPLACE IT, BUT CHRYSLER TOLD THEM INSTEAD TO CHANGE OUT THE STEERING COLUMN INSTEAD.*AK
