TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 DODGE DURANGO. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE STALLED DURING INCLEMENT WEATHER. THE VEHICLE WAS ABLE TO RESTART AFTER NUMEROUS ATTEMPTS. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH, THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVING UNSTABLE AND THERE WAS A LOUD ABNORMAL NOISE. IN ADDITION, THE STEERING WHEEL SEIZED AND THE BRAKE PEDAL FAILED TO RESPOND. AS A RESULT, THE CONTACT LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND SPUN AROUND CAUSING IT TO ROLL OVER. THE CONTACT CRASHED INTO AN EMBANKMENT. THE CONTACT WAS UNCONSCIOUS UPON HITTING HER HEAD ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE WINDOW. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED INJURIES TO THE HEAD, THE CHEST THAT REQUIRED MEDICAL ATTENTION. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 110,890.
WHILE MY WIFE WAS STARTING THE DODGE DURANGO THIS AFTERNOON, A BIG CLUNKING NOISE SOUNDED AND IT CONTINUED ON AS IF SOMEONE WAS THROWING ROCKS UNDERNEATH MY ENGINE. TURNS OUT THAT A ROD HAD BEEN BROKEN INSIDE MY ENGINE. AFTER LOOKING FOR A NEW ENGINE ON THE INTERNET, I AM FINDING OUT THAT THERE ARE SEVERAL COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS HAPPENING TO A LOT OF OTHER PEOPLE. WHY IS THIS NOT BEING INVESTIGATED? I AM NOW PART OF A LONG LIST OF DISSATISFIED CUSTOMER. I WILL NEVER BUY DODGE AGAIN AND WILL RECOMMEND TO ANYONE ELSE TO STAY AWAY. *TR
WHEN TURNING AT LOW SPEED THE WHEELS LOCKED UP AND COULD NOT MOVE. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 DODGE DURANGO. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 55 MPH, ALL OF THE INSTRUMENT PANEL LIGHTS DISENGAGED. THE CONTACT CONTINUED TO DRIVE AND THE LIGHTS ILLUMINATED AFTER APPROXIMATELY FOUR MINUTES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER, BUT THE FAILURE WAS UNABLE TO BE DETERMINED. THE FAILURE RECURRED ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS. WHILE DRIVING IN THE RAIN AT 75 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED AFTER THE CHECK ENGINE AND THE BATTERY WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATED. THE FAILURE RECURRED EACH TIME IT WAS DRIVEN IN THE RAIN AS WELL AS WHEN DRIVEN THROUGH A CAR WASH. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER, BUT THE FAILURE WAS UNABLE TO BE DETERMINED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 103,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 DODGE DURANGO. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WOULD INDEPENDENTLY ACCELERATE (SURGE FORWARD) WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WOULD HAVE TO BE SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL OR THE IGNITION WOULD HAVE TO BE TURNED OFF IN ORDER TO SLOW THE VEHICLE DOWN. THE DEALER COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 110,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 DODGE DURANGO. WHEN THE CONTACT STARTED THE VEHICLE, THE ENGINE STALLED. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE TWO ENGINE RODS FRACTURED DUE TO HYDROLOCK. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 144,000.
APPARENTLY THIS IS A PROBLEM THAT DODGE HAS BEEN AWARE OF SINCE 2004. THE DESIGN OF THE VEHICLE ALLOWS RAIN WATER TO BE DIRECTED DOWN THE FRONT WINDSHIELD AND INTO THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT WHERE IT IS THEN SUCKED THROUGH THE INTAKE MANIFOLD CAUSING THE PISTONS TO HYDRO-LOCK. IN TURN THE PISTON RODS BEND AND/OR BREAK CAUSING THE ENGINE TO BLOW UP. THIS HAPPENED TO MY VEHICLE WHEN I STARTED IT ON MAY 18, 2014. THERE WERE PIECES OF MY ENGINE BLOCK ON THE DRIVEWAY. THANKFULLY I WASN'T DRIVING AT THE TIME OR I COULD HAVE HAD A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. *TR
JUST BOUGHT VEHICLE FROM A USED CAR DEALER IN NJ. ON DRIVE HOME TO PA, VEHICLE MADE A LOUD RATTLING NOISE, DEBRIS CAME OUT FROM AROUND TRUCK. ENGINE TURNED OFF IN THE MIDDLE OF A BUSY ROAD. LOTS OF SMOKE COMING OUT FROM UNDER THE HOOD AND FROM THE PASSENGER VENTS. ENGINE OIL POURED OUT OF THE ENGINE ONTO THE GROUND. VEHICLE HAD TO BE TOWED HOME. INSTRUMENT CLUSTER GAUGES WERE WITHIN NORMAL READINGS. NO CHECK ENGINE OR OIL LIGHTS ON. VEHICLE COOLANT TEMPS IN NORMAL RANGE ON THE GAUGE. IN PROCESS OF TALKING WITH VEHICLE'S PLACE OF PURCHASE TO FIND OUT HOW TO GET THIS ENGINE FIXED/REPLACED. *JS
I CHANGED THE OIL IN MY DURANGO ON MAY 3 2014. THE SUV THEN SAT IN THE DRIVEWAY FOR TWO WEEKS, DURING WHICH IT RAINED ALMOST EVERY DAY. I WENT TO START THE SUV IT STARTED FINE THEN I HEARD A KNOCK THEN A LOUD TAPPING. THE ENGINE HAS SINCED LOCKED UP AND IS A PAPER WEIGHT NOW. THIS SUV WAS A DAILY DRIVER AND THE TWO WEEKS WAS THE LONGEST THAT IT HAS EVER SAT WITHOUT BEING DRIVEN. UNTIL THIS ISSUE I'VE HAD NO PROBLEM WITH THIS SUV. I'VE SINCE READ HUNDREDS OF SIMILAR CASES ON THIS MODEL SUV. WHAT RECOURSE DO WE HAVE BECAUSE I'M STILL MAKING CAR PAYMENTS. *JS

THE FAILURE OCCURRED ON FIVE SEPARATE OCCASIONS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN.
5.7L HEMI. STARTED IT UP AT HOME AND CLANGING STARTED JUST LIKE THAT FROM THE ENGINE WITHOUT ANY PREVIOUS WARNING. SHUT IT OFF AND CHECKED AROUND AND FOUND PIECES OF THE ENGINE BLOCK ON THE GROUND. CRAWLED UNDER IT AND THERE IS A HOLE IN THE BLOCK JUST ABOUT THE OIL PAN LIP. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 DODGE DURANGO. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH, THE ENGINE STALLED AND THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE CONTROL WARNING LAMP ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHO STATED THAT THE ENGINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THIS FAILURE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 112,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
THE ENGINE HYDRO-LOCKED BREAKING 2 RODS AND BLOWING A HOLE THROUGH THE ENGINE BLOCK. CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO LOSE ALL POWER AND MY WIFE DROVE OFF OF THE ROAD. LUCKILY SHE DID NOT HIT ANYTHING OR GET INJURED. THE VEHICLE NEEDED AN ENGINE REPLACEMENT. THE LOCAL DODGE DEALERSHIP WAS FAMILIAR WITH THE ISSUE AS IT TURNS OUT TO BE VERY COMMON WITH THIS YEAR VEHICLE. THE WINDSHIELD DAM THAT DIRECTS RAIN WATER AWAY FROM THE ENGINE IS POORLY DESIGNED AND IT ALLOWS WATER TO FLOW RIGHT ONTO THE MOTOR. OVER TIME THE WATER RUSTS AND ROTS THE INTAKE MANIFOLD BOLTS EVENTUALLY ALLOWING THE WATER TO FLOW INTO THE ENGINE CAUSING HYDRO-LOCK. THIS IS AN ISSUE THAT CHRYSLER SHOULD HAVE TAKEN RESPONSIBILITY FOR BUT INSTEAD THEY HAVE NOT. MY WIFE COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED AND IT COST ME $6,000 TO REPLACE THE MOTOR.
EVERY TIME I DRIVE IN THE RAIN THE ENGINE STALL AND MAKE A ABRUPT STOP. I HAVE NUMEROUS SERVICE DONE BY THE DODGE DEALER AND MANY AMOUNT OF MONEY SPENT ON TRYING TO CORRECT THIS MAJOR PROBLEM. IN GOOD WEATHER THE SUV DRIVE GREAT IT'S ONLY WHEN IT RAIN WHEN THIS HAPPENS. THIS A MAJOR SAFETY HAZARD ESPECIALLY WHEN YOUR ON A MAJOR HIGHWAY AND CARS ARE DRIVING AT HIGH SPEED BEHIND YOU AND YOUR CAR STOP. IS THE DODGE COMPANY WAITING FOR PEOPLE TO DIE IN ORDER TO CORRECT THIS PROBLEM. I'M THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF THIS VEHICLE AND ALWAYS HAD THE MAINTENANCE SERVICE DONE
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 DODGE DURANGO. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE WINDSHIELD COWL COVERING WAS DEFECTIVE AND THE SEAL WAS REPLACED; HOWEVER, WATER WAS ABLE TO PENETRATE INTO THE ENGINE WHICH REQUIRED IT TO BE REPLACED. WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH, THE ENGINE PRODUCED A LOUD THUD FOLLOWED BY A PRONOUCED TAPPING NOISE. WAS ABLE GUIDE THE VEHICLE OFF THE ROAD. VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO LOCAL GARAGE WHERE THE ENGINE WAS PROCLAIMED "DEAD" - APPEARS TO HAVE THROWN A ROD. VEHICLE WAS WELL CARED FOR WITH DEALER OIL CHANGES EVERY 3K MILES. NO INDICATION OF A PROBLEM PRIOR TO THIS INCIDENT. CHRYSLER / DODGE UNWILLING TO PROVIDE ANY ASSISTANCE OR INFORMATION. *JS
I HAVE A 2004 DODGE DURANGO WITH A 5.7 HEMI. AFTER A RAIN I STARTED THE VEHICLE AND THE ENGINE BLEW. THE DURANGO HAS HAD REGULAR SERVICE. WHEN IT WAS PARKED THE DAY BEFORE IT WAS FINE AND HAD BEEN DRIVEN ALL DAY. I LOOKED THIS UP AND IS A COMMON OCCURRENCE. *TR
MOISTURE ENTERED INTO THE CYLINDERS VIA THAT AIR INTAKE MANIFOLD DUE TO A WATER SEAL DESIGN DEFECT IN THE AREA OF THE WINDSHIELD WIPER ARMS. WHEN THE VEHICLE IS PARKED, RAIN WATER COMING DOWN THE FRONT WINDSHIELD WILL FLOW DIRECTLY UNDER THE COWL AND ONTO THE ENGINE BLOCK. THIS WATER INTRUSION CAUSES UNDUE STRESS ON THE PISTONS, RODS, AND CRANKSHAFT EVENTUALLY CAUSING A ROD TO BREAK AND PUNCTURE THE ENGINE BLOCK. IF THIS HAPPENS AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, THE RESULTS COULD BE DEADLY. THE OTHER KNOWN SCENARIO IS AFTER THE CAR IS PARKED FOR A PERIOD OF TIME (EXPOSED TO RAIN), THE CYLINDER WILL FILL WITH WATER, CAUSING A HYDRO-LOCK CONDITION AND THE VEHICLE WILL NOT START. THE ENGINE USUALLY IS FOUND TO ALSO HAVE A BENT OR FRACTURED ROD AT THIS POINT. THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM BY DODGE / CHRYSLER AND THEY REFUSE TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. AFTER A RAIN STORM WHERE THE 04 DURANGO WAS PARKED SLIGHTLY DOWNHILL I ATTEMPTED TO START THE VEHICLE AND HEARD A HORRID SOUND AS IF METAL PARTS WERE FLYING AROUND IN THE ENGINE. LOOKED UNDER THE VEHICLE AND FOUND SMALL PIECES OF METAL ON THE GROUND. EVENTUALLY FOUND A HOLE IN THE BLOCK AND AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH ONLINE I FOUND THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM. I CALLED CHRYSLER AND THEY WOULD NOT HELP AS THE VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY. *TT
WE PURCHASED OUR PRE-OWNED 2004 5.7 LIMITED EDITION IN JANUARY 2007. IT HAD AROUND 40,000 MILES. WITHIN A YEAR OR SO AFTER, THE CD CHANGER STOPPED WORKING, AND THEN THE RADIO WOULD SOMETIMES NOT WORK AFTER HEAVY RAIN. DURING A HEAVY DOWNPOUR THE CAR WOULD SHAKE AND SOMETIMES TURN-OFF, LEAVING ME AND 2 SMALL KIDS STRANDED ON THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY UNTIL THE RAIN LIGHTENED ENOUGH FOR THE CAR TO START AGAIN. WHENEVER WE WOULD TAKE THE CAR IN TO BE REPAIRED FOR THIS PROBLEM, WE WERE ALWAYS TOLD THEY COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG THAT WOULD CAUSE THOSE TYPES OF PROBLEMS, BUT WE HAD NUMEROUS REPAIRS THAT WE NOW THINK WERE PROBABLY RELATED TO THE WATER PROBLEM, SUCH AS A NEW STARTER, REPAIRS FOR A COOLANT LEAK,ETC. IN EARLY 2014 THE CAR BEGAN HAVING PROBLEMS WITH OVERHEATING. A FEW DAYS AFTER A TWO OR THREE DAY PERIOD OF NEAR CONSTANT RAIN I WENT TO START THE CAR AND IT SOUNDED LIKE IT WAS FLOODED OR SOMETHING. THEN THERE WAS A LONG BANG FOLLOWED BY A TERRIBLE NOISE COMING FROM THE ENGINE. HAD IT TOWED AND LOOKED AT BY TWO DIFFERENT MECHANICS WHO SAID THERE WAS A HOLE IN THE BLOCK AND THE ENGINE WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED. I JUST RECENTLY DECIDED TO SEARCH THE INTERNET TO SEE IF ANY OTHER PEOPLE HAD THIS PROBLEM AND HAVE FOUND HUNDREDS OF POSTS BY CONSUMERS WHO HAD THIS VERY SAME THING HAPPEN TO THIS MODEL DODGE DURANGO. IT SEEMS APPROPRIATE FOR DODGE TO BE INVESTIGATED FOR THIS AND PAY US FOR THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS SPENT ON REPAIRS, TOWS, HAVING TO SIT DANGEROUSLY ON THE SIDE OF HIGHWAYS WHEN THE CAR WOULD TURN OF IN THE HEAVY RAIN, AND THE FACT THAT WE ENDED UP JUST HAVING TO JUNK OUR CAR FOR A FEW HUNDRED BUCKS AND WILL NOW HAVE TO PURCHASE A BRAND NEW CAR WE CANNOT AFFORD WHEN WE HAD JUST PAID THIS ONE OFF TWO YEARS PRIOR. THEY SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR BASICALLY SELLING CARS WITH DEFECTIVE COMPONENTS TO UNSUSPECTING BUYERS FOR TENS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS!!! *TR
ON APRIL 11, 2014, MY THREE YOUNG CHILDREN, BOYFRIEND, AND MYSELF(PREGNANT) STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT. AS THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN I BEGAN TO ACCELERATE; THAT'S WHEN I HEARD A LOUD POPPING SOUND. AT FIRST I THOUGHT MAYBE MY TIRE POPPED. I WAS BARELY ABLE TO PULL OFF THE 4 LANE STREET I WAS TRAVELING ON WITHOUT GETTING HIT. ONCE I PULLED OVER I REALIZED OIL LEAKING FROM UNDERNEATH MY TRUCK. I WAS ABLE TO TAKE THE TRUCK TO A SERVICE STATION THAT WAS LOCATED ACROSS THE PARKING LOT AND WAS TOLD THE ENGINE FAILED. THE TRUCK STILL STARTS BUT MAKES A LOUD CLICKING NOISE. THIS TRUCK HAS BEEN WELL TAKING CARE OF AND MAINTENANCE REGULARLY. I HAVE DONE RESEARCH ON THE ISSUE AND HAVE FOUND THIS HAS BEEN AN ON GOING ISSUE WITH CHRYSLER. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY THERE HASN'T BEEN A RECALL ON THIS ISSUE. I HAD NO WARNING SIGNS OF ANY ISSUES WITH MY TRUCK AND NOW THIS. THIS IS SUCH A DISAPPOINTMENT. *TR
I HAD LET MY DURANGO SIT FOR ABOUT 3 MONTHS STARTING IT ONCE A WEEK. ONE DAY I WENT OUT TO START IT WHEN I HEARD A LOUD KNOCKING SHUT IT OFF THEN TRY TO RESTART THE CAR THEN I HEARD A LOUD BANG WITH REALLY LOUD KNOCKING. IMMEDIATELY I KNEW IT WAS A ROD. I AM SO ANGRY WITH DODGE. I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER I TOOK IN TO THE DEALERSHIP MULTIPLE TIMES FOR THE WATER ISSUE AND OF COURSE THEY DIDN'T FIND A PROBLEM OR ONE THAT THEY WANTED TO SHARE WITH ME. OEM CD PLAYER HAS BECOME INOPERABLE DUE TO BATTERY CHANGE. THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH ALL MAKES AND MODELS OF DCC. EVEN NEW 2013 AND 2014 MODELS. DCC REFUSES TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT THIS. DEALERS CHARGE BIG BUCKS TO RE-FLASH CONTROL MODULE SO THAT CD PLAYER IS AGAIN RECOGNIZED BY COMPUTER. WHY SHOULD A VEHICLE HAVE TO BE RE PROGRAMMED EVERY TIME A BATTERY GOES DEAD? THIS IS AN OBVIOUS DESIGN FLAW IN SOFTWARE AND THE PUBLIC SHOULD NOT BE FOOTING THE BILL FOR IT. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 DODGE DURANGO. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE ATTEMPTING TO PULL OUT OF A LANE TO PASS ANOTHER VEHICLE, THERE WAS A LOUD KNOCKING NOISE. THE CONTACT HAD TO REDUCE SPEED AND COAST THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A REPAIR SHOP WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE PISTONS AND RODS HAD BROKEN RESULTING IN DAMAGING THE BLOCK WHICH WOULD REQUIRE THE ENGINE TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS TO BE REPAIRED. IN INCLEMENT WEATHER, DURING HEAVY RAIN THERE HAD BEEN INTERMEDIATE HESITATION AND SPUTTERING IN THE ENGINE WITHOUT WARNING AT RANDOM. DURANGO WAS ALWAYS WELL MAINTAINED AND TAKEN CARE OF. OIL CHANGED EVERY 3,000 MILES. ONE MORNING I STARTED THE TRUCK AND THERE WAS A STRANGE TICKING NOISE. THE NIGHT BEFORE THE TRUCK RAN FINE AS USUAL. IT RAINED HEAVILY THAT NIGHT. I DID NOT USE THE TRUCK AT ALL FOR FEAR OF DOING ANY DAMAGE. I TOOK THE TRUCK TO THE DEALER AND THEY DIDN'T ACTUALLY KNOW WHAT THE TICKING WAS AND WANTED ME TO PAY ABOUT $550 IN LABOR SO THEY COULD TAKE THE MOTOR APART. I DECIDED TO TAKE THE TRUCK HOME TO THINK ABOUT IT BECAUSE THE $550 WAS NOT EVEN FOR A REPAIR , IT WAS ONLY TO GET AN ESTIMATE . I DID NOT USE THE TRUCK AT ALL AND IT WAS JUST PARKED IN MY YARD. WHEN I STARTED THE TRUCK UP TO BRING IT TO MY OWN MECHANIC THE NOISE WAS A HORRENDOUS BANGING SOUND AND THE ENGINE STALLED. I DIDN'T EVEN USE THE TRUCK AT ALL AND A TICKING NOISE NOW TURNED INTO A BANGING SOUND. I HAD THE TRUCK TOWED TO MY MECHANIC WHO INFORMED ME THAT I NEEDED A MOTOR. BROKEN ROD. I DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW A TRUCK IN GREAT CONDITION, THAT LOOKS BRAND NEW, ALWAYS WELL MAINTAINED JUST BLOWS A MOTOR AT 100,800 MILES. I WENT TO ANOTHER DODGE DEALER BECAUSE I DIDN'T CARE FOR THE FACT THAT THE FIRST DEALER DID ABSOLUTELY NOTHING FOR ME. I WENT TO THE SERVICE DEPT. TO FIND OUT ABOUT A MOTOR AND WAS ACTUALLY GIVEN THE NAME OF A CO. THAT SELLS MOTORS BECAUSE I WAS TOLD THAT MY MOTOR IS ON BACK ORDER AND THE DEALER CAN'T EVEN GET ONE . I WAS TOLD THAT THERE IS A SHORTAGE BECAUSE ACROSS THE COUNTRY 18 MOTORS ARE BEING CHANGED DAILY. THAT SEEMS LIKE QUITE A HIGH NUMBER WHEN NOTHING IS BEING DONE FOR THE CONSUMER ABOUT THIS MATTER. IT WILL COST ME ABOUT $5000 TO $6000 TO REPLACE THE MOTOR SO NOW THE TRUCK IS JUST A PAPER WEIGHT IN MY BACK YARD. OWNER DROVE DURANGO TO REPAIR SHOP WHERE HE HAS SERVICED ALL HIS VEHICLES SINCE MOVING TO AREA 11 YEARS AGO. SHOP MANAGER INSPECTED VEHICLE, NOTED CHECK-ENGINE STILL ON AND RECOMMENDED ENGINE DIAGNOSTIC. ON 12/31/13, SHOP CALLED OWNER STATING THAT ENGINE DIAGNOSTIC DID NOT IDENTIFY CAUSE FOR CHECK-ENGINE LIGHT OTHER THAN ISSUE WITH CYLINDER #4. SHOP RECOMMENDED AN INDUCTION SERVICE TO FLUSH CARBON BUILDUP FROM THE ENGINE. SHOP MANAGER CALLED LATER, STATING THAT AFTER ENGINE FLUSH AND DURING TEST DRIVE, THE BOTTOM OF THE ENGINE BLEW WITH HOLES IN BOTH SIDES. ESTIMATE COST FOR REBUILT ENGINE AND INSTALLATION IS $8500. SHOP POINTED OWNER TO AN EDMUNDS FORUM WHERE OWNERS WERE REPORTING SIMILAR AND IN SOME CASES ALMOST IDENTICAL INSTANCES OF BLOWN ENGINES ON THE DODGE 5.7 HEMI ENGINE FOR MODEL YEAR 2004. OWNER RESEARCHED AND FOUND 100S OF INSTANCES WHERE THE DODGE 5.7 HEMI ENGINE BLEW BETWEEN 70K AND 110K FOR MODEL YEARS 2004 & 2005 UNDER SIMILAR CONDITIONS (LOW SPEEDS, LITTLE TO NO WARNING PRIOR TO FAILURE, POSSIBLE ASSOCIATION WITH HEAVY RAINS). THREE INSTANCES INVOLVED HIGHWAY SPEEDS, ONE DOWNHILL AND TWO WHICH NEARLY RESULTED IN ACCIDENTS IN TRYING TO STOP THE VEHICLE. ON 1/8/14, OWNER CALLED CHRYSLER AT 1-800-247-9753 AND SPOKE WITH AGENT FOR HELP IN COVERING COST TO REPLACE ENGINE. OWNER STATED HIS RESEARCH AND WHAT APPEARS TO BE AN OBVIOUS DESIGN OR MANUFACTURING PROBLEM AS EVIDENT BY THE LARGE NUMBER OF BLOWN ENGINES. OWNER EXPRESSED LOYALTY VIA OWNERSHIP OF 1984 RAMPAGE ([XXX]), 1998 GRAND CARAVAN ([XXX]), AND 2004 DURANGO ([XXX]). ON THE MORNING OF 12/30/13, I WENT OUT TO START MY DURANGO TO LET IT WARM UP SOME BEFORE I LEFT. WHEN I TURNED THE KEY THE ENGINE MADE A LOUD CLANGING SOUND (LIKE SOMEONE PUT A FORK IN A GARBAGE DISPOSAL AND JAMMED IT) AND THEN STOPPED. IT WOULDN'T TURN OVER AT ALL AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS. I HAD ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE TOW IT TO A LOCAL DEALER WHO CALLED ME TO TELL ME THE DIAGNOSTIC TEST SAID IT WAS THE STARTER AND STARTER RELAY. THEY PUT THE NEW PARTS ON TODAY (12/31/13) AND THEN CALLED ME TO TELL ME THAT IT WASN'T THE STARTER AND THAT THE MOTOR HAS SEIZED UP. THE SERVICE TECH SAID HE WOULD LOOK IN TO ESTIMATES FOR A RE-MANUFACTURED MOTOR AND A NEW MOTOR . KNOWING HOW MUCH I HAVE BABIED OUR DURANGO (FULL SYNTHETIC OIL CHANGES ON A REGULAR BASIS, OTHER SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE AND ALL RECORDS TO SHOW), I WENT ONLINE TO SEE IF THIS HAS HAPPENED TO OTHERS..BOY OH BOY HAS IT!! APPARENTLY THE COWL DOES NOT LET WATER FLOW AWAY FROM THE ENGINE PROPERLY AND AS THE MOTOR AGES THE INTAKE GASKETS FLATTEN AND ALLOWS WATER TO ENTER THE INTAKE, CAUSING PROBLEMS TO THE CYLINDERS AND SEIZING THE MOTOR. I REALIZED THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED TO OUR DURANGO. ON 12/29/13 WE HAD VERY HEAVY RAIN IN THE MID-ATLANTIC REGION AND THE DURANGO SAT IN FRONT OF OUR HOUSE ALL DAY/NIGHT AS NEITHER ONE OF US DROVE IT. NEEDLESS TO SAY, I LIKE MANY OTHERS AM VERY MAD THAT DODGE/CHRYSLER HAS NOT ACCEPTED RESPONSIBILITY.
