NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2014 Dodge Journey. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
C2200/49 Abs module internal failure code comes, along with traction control comes and goes at the same time and have learned that it is a known issue for my vehicle models from 2009-2020. High failure rate and cost is astronomically high 900 dollars to replace and programming. It all started when I accidentally ran up on a curb in October.
When driving down the road, all of a sudden I felt a huge jerk, and heard a loud noise. I thought that we had got hit from the back of the vehicle. However, we had not been hit. My passenger seat's headrest had deployed. It looks as if the brackets inside had broken. I could have wrecked my car and injured my children inside because it was so sudden and scared me!
ABS module has went bad over 6 months ago and the dealership says it is still on backorder as i have read on many different car manufacturers <BUT they still get the brake ABS for new cars to sell but not for the used ones under warranty,,,and they also told me at that time that they had other vehicles with the same problem and they had already been waiting close to a yr on their parts
The contact owns a 2014 Dodge Journey. The contact stated that the ABS warning light, TPMS, and cruise control warning lights had illuminated on and off. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the ABS sensor was corroded and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 160,000.
no accident but around 3 months ago my abs lights and traction control lights came on took it to my dealership and they scanned it and said abs module internal fault and said to me well that part is on backorder, at least till jan 1 2023, went by there yesterday and they said parts still not in and it might might not never come in.... so much for safety and what good is a warranty if they wont supply parts for the used cars but still building new ones for sale
Front passenger side Seat belt won’t stay fastened. Seat belts continues to pop loose or won’t latch at all.
My abs module went bad showing the brake light, abs ,anti skid, dealership checked it and said we will order you an ABS module but we have other drivers that have been waiting for over 6 months now and still no parts for them and it has been almost 1 yr now that i have been waiting, i can still drive the SUV BUT i don't have the anti sidd system that works on my suv,,,,BUT yet they have enough parts to keep building and selling NEW vehicles...THE Government should make them fix our used cars as well
I PURCHASED THIS CAR IN 2020 THROUGH JD BYRIDER OF JANESVILLE WI, I AM MAKING PAYMENTS CURRENTLY. IN FEBRUARY OF 2022 MY BATTERY LIGHT KEPT COMING ON AND THE RADIO WOULDN'T WORK. I CALLED MY DEALERSHIP AND DUE TO HAVING A 30,000 MILE WARRANTY I TOOK IT IN, AND THEY TOLD ME IT WAS MY BATTERY SO AS FAR AS I WAS TOLD THEY REPLACED WITH A NEW ONE. IT WAS FINE WITH NO ISSUES UP UNTIL A MONTH AGO, MY BATTERY LIGHT COMES ON, I NOTICE THE WIPERS AND THE WINDOWS WORK REALLY SLOW DURING THIS TIME. ONCE I DRIVE FOR A LITTLE BIT IT EVENTUALLY GOES OFF. TODAY WHEN I WENT TO HEAD TO WORK IT WILL NOT READ MY KEY FOB. I HAD TO TOUCH THE TOP OF MY FOB AT THE OPPOSITE END OF THE UNLOCK AND LOCK BUTTONS TO THE START BUTTON TO START MY CAR. I LEFT MY CAR RUNNING AT THE GAS STATION AND IT DID DETECT THE KEY HAD LEFT THE VEHICLE BUT WHEN I GOT BACK INTO THE VEHICLE THE BEEPING DID NOT GO OFF LIKE USUAL WHEN THE KEY IS BACK INSIDE THE VEHICLE. I JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT ALL OF THE RECALLS THAT WERE ON THERE HAD BEEN TAKEN CARE OF. THANKS
While I was driving the car suddenly lost power steering and acceleration, the bolts broke off from the pulley and the serpentine belt came off while driving down a busy street
The contact owns a 2014 Dodge Journey. The contact stated upon starting the vehicle, the brake pedal was depressed but failed to move downward and remained seized. The contact stated that the ABS warning light was illuminated. The contact was unable to restart the vehicle. The dealer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the VIN was not included in a recall. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact referenced NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V675000 (Electronic Stability Control, Service Brakes, Hydraulic). The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.
2014 Dodge Journey front passenger headrest just deployed. After just starting to crank the vehicle.
My ABS traction control and brake lights are all on and im informed that the brake module control is went out . I purchased the car only 5 months prior to this happening
The brake and steering failed while I was attempting to slow down to turn right. The car failed to stop and the car failed to turn so I jumped a curb and caused extensive damage to bottom of car.
The contact owns a 2014 Dodge Journey. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 45 MPH, the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle failed to restart. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where the failure was undetermined. The vehicle was not repaired; however, the failure recurred two days later. The vehicle was able to restart. The vehicle was taken to a different dealer where the failure was undetermined. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 151,978.
Powersteering return line failed In recent Cold weather, causing loss of Powersteering.
Power steering lines rupture in cold weather, causing you to loose power steering when driving.
Rear view camera intermittently displays a fuzzy or upside down screen that limits my ability to view what is behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash. Note, I received recall notice 22S06/NHTSA Recall 22V082 for anther vehicle with the same problem so I'm not sure why there wasn't a recall on the Dodge Journey.
Front passenger seat headrest deployed for no reason. I understand there are thousands of complaints involving this with various Chrysler vehicles, and a recall needs to happen
I had the Cruise Control recall done on my vehicle in 2018, but it never really fixed the issue. I wasn't aware there was only a 2 year warranty on the work done, and that would have put it in 202 when everything was pretty much closed down. I contacted Dodge and they said there was nothing they could do about it. I know another recall was R61 / NHTSA 15V-675 ABS Ground Wiring issue which got "fixed." Now, I am having an ABS, Skid Control, Brake light issue. I took my car to the shop and they are charging me $180 just to find out the issue. I received a call from the mechanic and he proceeded to tell me the parts needed are on backorder and may be available in March 2022, which will cost close to $2k to repair. I was also advised by the mechanic this is a common issue across Dodge, Crystler Jeep. If that is the case, which it seems to be since I have been looking online and there have been a lot of complaints, why is this not a recall? Why, if dodge messed up when producing vehicles between certain years, do the consumers have to pay to get this fixed? I don't think it is right and I think if Dodge isn't going to take responsibility and issue a recall on this then there needs to be a Class Action Suit against Dodge. I intend to start doing some legal research to find out what the process is to do this. I can't believe a dealership can charge someone $180 to run a diagnostics on the vehicle when they know what the issue is, since it is common, plus being able to charge almost $2k to repair. The issue is with the ABS pump and module, and this has to be done at the dealership since it is electrical and needs to be hooked up to the computer to calibrate or what ever.
I was driving and moved the seat back of the car to sit up straighter. When I did I heard a loud noise from what I thought was the back seat and pulled over to check what it was. Upon inspection I noticed the head rest had completely separated. My first thought was that I was happy it didn’t knock me out which is exactly what I said to my daughter who was sitting in the passenger seat. I got online to see how to put it back together and realized this is a common and expensive issue for dodge journeys and that the head rest can’t be pushed back together. I can have it inspected if need be. No warning lamps came on yet.
We noticed the drivers side front headrest was fully extended and had come apart. To be clear, this happened while the car was parked, and there are no signs that our car was struck. There were no warning lights and no reason for it to occur. It had to be component failure. Upon inspection I saw a small piece of broken plastic inside the headrest and I couldn't reassemble it. It looks like a plastic component within the headrest failed and deployed the headrest like it would if there was an accident. Thank heavens this didn't happen while either of us were driving. I did some research and this is a common problem and a huge safety issue, causing drivers to be concussed and, of course, causing accidents. I looked for recalls and to my disbelief, there aren't any. No one has inspected our car but I'm more than happy to have someone look at it. I'm angry that something so dangerous that it would strike the driver of the car randomly isn't being addressed by the manufacturer.
Tipm caused several issues, blown motor, and now is in the dealership shop for an alternator, battery, ground strap and other wiring issues. I haven’t had my car for over a year due to this.
Last year on or about June 17, my transmission gave out completely on me while driving up hill on a 2way road. My vehicle is available for inspection, but the transmission has already been replaced with a used transmission. This event put my life and others at risk because my car completely stopped working on an incline with no indication it was going to give out. My father was actually imjured in his attempt to help me stop the car from rolling backwards. The day it happened I took my car to be assessed at our local Dodge dealership, and had it repaired by an independent contractor. As mentioned before there were no warning signs that it was going to fail. No signs of overheating and/or weird noises.
After getting oil changed/air filter replaced and 4 new tires, vehicle has stalled out every day since while running (less than week) it is now stalling out while driving!! Happened while I was driving on the highway. EXTREMELY dangerous. Car usually will restart. But 95% of the time it continuously sounds like it’s trying to turn over until I push the ignition button to turn off. I am currently stuck on the side of the road for about a half hour because it won’t start back up. I have had this car less than a year!
The contact owns a 2014 Dodge Journey. The contact stated that the air bag warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the seat air bag needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 67,000.
Crankshaft sensor failure has failed. It is not covered from the insurance companies and causes other systems to fail. It causes the car to smoke and have a heavy odor (said to be oil by the technician). It also causes the car to have situations with starting, shifting gears and almost cutting off as a person is driving. If speed limit is 60mph it will not transfer gear till it is ready. So imagine going 40mph on a 60mph road and it is in stall mode. Stall mode is when it will not transfer to the 2nd gear. So could you think of if a semi truck being behind you and isn't slowing down? Other system failures are not seen until after the problem comes back. I put my car into the shop on 06/11/2021. Picked it up on 06/15/2021and not even 30 minutes later had to return back to the shop. Now my car is diagnose with larger problems with no reason except the sensor was leaking and insurance would not cover it. Now even the manager was unclear as to why. The only lights that will come on are the malfunction light (it looks like a transmission) and a hazard sign within lines (electrical throttle). They will come and go however the smell will not and sounds (sounds like your engine is about to cut off without warning) will not stop. It also sounds like it is hard to start up (manager referred to it as a misfire). Good way to have a accident without warning and I felt very unsafe. Only to pay 676.00 for the same thing occurring.
fire risk of wiring breaking at upper right corner at liftgate (rear hatch door) wiring is breaking within rubber boot. this cause a fire risk. Other issues is rear lights failure. This hazard has high risk of Rear end collisions. This wire breakage has very dangerous outcome but easy to recall and save lives. I will be fix my wife car before this car gets my family killed. I will also be send the bill for it to maker of the car. This is a noted problem by many dodge owners nation wide. please look into it. SFC[XXX], US ARMY the car number is vin number [XXX]. INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
Front driver side door wiring caught on fire while driving, which now none of the windows work.
Unknown car just stopped working and turned off
HEAD REST BROKE WHEN WE LEANED BACK TO GRAB A TOY. THE LINKAGE TO THE WIPERS (TO SPRAY THE WINDSHIELD) BROKE A FEW DAYS AGO. WE NOTICED IT WHEN SPRAYING THE WINDSHIELD.
A safety recall was made back on 9/7/2017 to Jack Wolf in Belvidere, Illinois in reference to the safety recall steering wheel wiring- The inspection stated they installed a wheel wiring and protection sleeve. The light has started to come back on and sound off and stays on. This should have been taken care of properly back on September 7, 2017 - I should not be having this problem again
THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE HEADREST DEPLOYED RANDOMLY WHILE THE CAR WAS AT REST IN THE CURB LANE. UPON LOOKING AT THE INSIDE OF THE HEADREST, THE PLASTIC BRACKETS THAT PREVENT IT FROM DEPLOYING HAVE CRACKED AND BROKEN.
ON 5/6/21, WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS RUNNING AND STATIONARY, WAITING TO TURN LEFT THROUGH AN INTERSECTION ON CITY STREETS, THE AHR (ACTIVE HEAD RESTRAINT) RANDOMLY DEPLOYED IN THE DRIVER HEADREST. MY HUSBAND, WHO WAS DRIVING AT THE TIME, THOUGHT WE HAD BEEN REAR ENDED DUE TO THE LOUD NOISE IT MADE AND THE FORCE WITH WHICH IT HIT THE BACK OF HIS HEAD. THE VEHICLE HAS NEVER BEEN IN A COLLISION AND IS UP TO DATE ON MAINTENANCE. RESEARCHING THE AHR ONLINE BROUGHT UP DOZENS OF ARTICLES ABOUT THIS PROBLEMS OCCURRING IN DODGE JOURNEYS (YR 2010- 2018) BUT IT HAS YET TO OFFICIALLY BE LISTED FOR RECALL EVEN THOUGH A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT WAS FILED FOR THE ISSUE. WE CALLED OUR LOCAL DODGE DEALERSHIP AND THEY INFORMED US THE HEADREST COULD NOT BE REPAIRED ONCE DEPLOYED AND THAT A NEW ONE WAS NEEDED, QUOTING US ROUGHLY $575.00 TO DO SO.
AIR BAG LIGHT HAS BEEN TOGGLING ON AND OFF FOR LAST TWO MONTHS. DEALERSHIP HOOKED UP TO COMPUTER AND THE AIRBAG/HARNESS MUST BE REPLACED. CAR NOW OUT OF 100,000 WARRANTY. COST ESTIMATED TO REPLACE IS $1200.
WHILE DRIVING FROM FROM GRAND RAPIDS AND ARRIVING TO MICHIGAN CITY, INDIANA, I HEAR A NOISE THAT MIMICKED THAT OF A FLAT TIRE. I IMMEDIATELY MADE A RIGHT TURN INTO THE PARKING LOT TO CHECK EACH ONE OF MY TIRES, BUT NONE OF THEM WERE LOW OR COMPLETELY DEFLATED. I DROVE UP A BIT TO PARK MY VEHICLE, SO I COULD FURTHER INVESTIGATE AND IT STALLED. WHEN I GOT OUT OF THE VEHICLE, I SMELLED A LIGHT BURNING SMELL COMING FROM UNDERNEATH TBE VEHICLE AND I JUST LET IT SIT, WHILE CALLING MY INSURANCE COMPANY'S ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE TO OBTAIN SUPPORT. I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED BACK TO GRAND RAPIDS COSTING ME $401 BECAUSE MY INSURANCE ONLY PAID UP TO 15 MILES FOR TOWING AND THIS DRIVE WAS APPROXIMATELY A 125 MILE DRIVE. DUE TO COVID, I HAD TO PAY OUT OF POCKET FOR A RIDE BACK TO GRAND RAPIDS AS WELL. I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE I PURCHASED THE CAR BACK IN APRIL 2015 AND AFTER THE DELEARSHIP CHECKED TO DIAGNOSE THE VEHICLE, I RECEIVED A PHONE CALL SAYING IT WAS MY ALL WHEEL DRIVE POWERTRAIN UNIT/SYSTEM AND IT HAD BUSTED AND WAS LEAKING FLUID. THE QUOTE THAT THE GENTLEMAN GAVE WAS A WHOPPING $2200 AND SOME CHANGE. I REALLY THOUGHT I REMEMBERED PURCHASING A POWERTRAIN WARRANTY, BUT IS THERE A WAY TO FIND OUT FOR SURE IF I DID? I WOULD APPRECIATE MORE GUIDANCE ON THIS SITUATION BECAUSE I AM OUT OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS AND WOULD LOVE TO HAVE SOME FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE, IF POSSIBLE. ALSO, I WANTED TO INITIATE A RECALL FOR THIS BECAUSE IF I HAD BEEN STILL ON THE HIGHWAY DRIVING, THIS COULD HAVE TURNED OUT WAY DIFFERENT AND I WOULD HATE TO HEAR THAT OTHERS MAY NOT BE AS BLESSED AS I WAS. I DO NOT HAVE MY INVOICE YET BECAUSE THEY ARE WORKING ON FIXING MY CAR STILL. I WILL SAVE IT ONCE I DO, IF NEEDED. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR INVESTIGATING THIS SAFETY CONCERN AND HAVE A GREAT DAY!
WHEN AIRBAGS DEPLOYED, AIRBAG AT FOOT CONTROL PANEL (GAS/BRAKE) DEPLOYS MOVING FEET OFF OF BRAKE PEDAL. THIS REMOVES EMERGENCY CONTROL BY OPERATOR TO STOP VEHICLE. OPERATOR TRIED TO STOP AT INTERSECTION AFTER ANOTHER CAR FAILED TO YIELD/ SLOW DOWN AT INTERSECTION. AFTER INITIAL CONTACT AIRBAGS DEPLOYED AND VEHICLE TRAVELED ANOTHER 50YARDS UNTIL COMING TO STOP IN DITCH. THE LOWER OPERATOR AIRBAG IMPEDED THE USE OF BRAKES BY THE OPERATOR. HAD THERE BEEN MORE TRAFFIC IT WOULD HAVE CAUSED MORE ACCIDENTS.
Due to opening and closing the rear hatch, the wiring harness wires running from the car through the hatch break and fray causing many issues. One being the potential for exposed wires to spark and cause a fire. Others being faulty rear windshield wiper and faulty rear lighting. Brake lights, turn signals, running lights and rear interior lights causing a road hazard.
The contact owns a 2014 Dodge Journey. The contact stated that the air bag warning light would illuminate intermittently. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the driver’s side seat air bag and wiring harness failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure recurred. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the Vin was not under recall. The contact mentioned NHTSA Campaign Number: 17V432000 (Air Bags) as a possible solution to the failure however, the Vin was not included. The failure mileage was approximately 58,000.
WHEN I PLACED CAR IN PARK FEW MINUTES LATER A WARNING LIGHT CAME ON AND THEN WENT OFF BUT KEEPS POPPING BACK LOOKS LIKE A PERSON WEARING SEAT BELT AND BALL IN FRONT THEM
EARLIER THIS YEAR, MY ABS LIGHT CAME ON IN MY CAR. I SCANNED IT AND PULLED A CODE INDICATING THAT THAT RIGHT FRONT WHEEL SPEED SENSOR HAD GONE BAD. I REPLACED THE SENSOR, AND CLEARED THE CODE. A FEW MONTHS LATER, WHILE DRIVING DURING A THUNDERSTORM, THE LIGHT CAME BACK ON. I SCANNED MY CAR AGAIN, AND THE SAME CODE CAME UP. THE NEXT DAY, AFTER THE WEATHER WAS CLEAR, THE LIGHT HAD GONE BACK OFF. NOW, ANY TIME IT RAINS OR GETS VERY COLD, THE LIGHT COMES BACK ON.
THE ABS LIGHT CAME ON AND THE SKIDDING LIGHT CAME ON AND IT SAID TO CHECK THE AWD IVEHICLE WAS IN MOTION ON A CITY STREET AND WOULDN'T GO OVER 10 MILES PER HOUR.GARAGE PUT TESTERS ON IT SAID SENSOR WAS BAD- WE REPLACED IT AND THEN IT HAPPENED AGAIN AND THE TESTER SAID IT WAS THE AXLE (LEFT FRONT). REPLACED IT- STOPPED AGAIN . CHECKED THE WIRING AND THE TESTER SAID IT WAS OKAY BUT IT IS STILL STOPPING WHEN I AM DRIVING IT.
WHILE DRIVING THE ANTI SKID SHOWED ON INSTRUMENT PANEL AS OFF THEN A LIGHTNING SYMBOL CAME IN AND CAR WENT INTO LIMP MODE NIT LETTING ME ACCELERATE MUCH AT ALL SO I WAS FORCED TO PULL OFF THE ROAD. AS IT WENT INTO LIMP IT DEACCELERATED VERY QUICKLY CAUSING A TRAFFIC PROBLEM BEFORE I COULD GET OFF TO THR SIDE.
WHILE DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY GOING STRAIGHT AT 60 MPH MY VEHICLE SHUTS OFF. WE THEN HAVE TO STOP THE VEHICLE TO RESTART IT. THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING ABOUT 1X A WEEK FOR ABOUT A MONTH. THERE ARE NO CODES AND ALL ENGINE INFORMATION READS FINE.
I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM SHOPPING, AND THE TRAC CONTROL, AND A LIGHTING BOLT LIGHT CAME ON, AND I HAD NO ACCELERATION POWER, I WAS NEARLY HOME, SO I DROVE ON TO MY HOUSE AND PARKED IT.
WHILE DRIVING A SHORT DISTANCE, 36 MILES, THE DODGE STARTS TO OVERHEAT. IT HAS BEEN IN SERVICE THREE TIMES FOR THIS ISSUE AND NO DIAGNOSIS HAS BEEN MADE. UPON STARTING THE CAR, IT SHAKES AND AFTER A MINUTE IT SUBSIDES WITHIN MINUTES OF STARTING THE OIL TEMP JUMPS TO 231 DEGREES OR HIGHER. I HAVE HAD TO DRIVE WITH THE HEAT ON HIGH IN ORDER TO BRING THE TEMPERATURE DOWN AND EVEN WITH IT ON THE LOWEST TEMP IS STILL 226 AFTER 10/15 MINUTES. THIS ISSUE HAS BEEN ONGOING SINCE JULY 2020.
DRIVER'S HEAD REST AIR BAG BLEW OUT WHEN NO ONE WAS IN THE CAR. THE CAR WAS STATIONARY IN THE DRIVEWAY. WE WERE JUST GETTING IN THE CAR AND NOTICED IT. THAT WOULD HAVE TURNED OUT VERY GOOD IF MY WIFE WAS DRIVING. I HAVE PHOTOS IF THEY ARE NECESSARY.
WE WERE HIT ON OUR ENTIRE PASSENGER SIDE BY AN OUT OF CONTROL DRIVER, THE SIDE OR FRONT AIRBAG DID NOT DEPLOY, MY WIFES HAND WAS BROKE AND MY SONS HEAD BOUNCED OFF THE BACK PASSENGER WINDOW.
unknown ,check engine light came on the screen blacked out and began to stall out on freeway doing 55 . was afraid of getting rearended.
GOODYEAR ASSURANCE ALL-SEASON TIRE INCURRED A BLOWOUT WHILE OPERATING THE VEHICLE. THE TIRE WAS NEW WITH APPROXIMATELY 100 MILES OF USE. THERE WAS NO OBSERVATION OF MATERIAL IN THE ROADWAY AND NO OBJECT FOUND IN THE TIRE.
PUT CAR IN REVERSE. BACKING OUT OF DRIVEWAY. HEADREST EXPLODED INTO MY HEAD. POPPED OUT ABOUT 3 TO 4 INCHES. PUSHED MY HEAD FORWARD A FOOT. CAR WAS IN MOTION. NO CONTACT WITH ANYTHING.
