The contact owns a 2008 Ford Edge. The contact stated that while his son was driving at an undisclosed speed, the front driver's side wheel hub fractured, and the wheel detached. The driver was able to veer to the side of the road, where the vehicle remained. The contact stated that the failure had previously occurred with the front driver's side wheel hub, and all four of the service wheel hub spindles had been replaced. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was 229,703.
I AM HAVING AN ISSUE WITH MY WHEEL BEARING AND THERE IS A RECALL 270760 AND MY VIN # WAS NOT ON THE LIST. MY CAR WAS RUNNING PERFECTLY FINE AND THEN WHEN I GOT NEW TIRES, THEY TOLD ME THAT MY WHEEL BEARINGS WERE WEAK. IN THE BEGINNING, BEFORE I GOT MY TIRES, THE CAR STARTED VIBRATING AND GRINDING. WHEN I TOOK IT TO THE AUTO REPAIR TO LOOK AT IT, THEY TOLD ME THAT IT MAY BE THE TIRES, WHICH I DID NEEDED TO REPLACE. SO I DID. THE SOUND DID NOT GO AWAY. FINALLY, THEY DID MORE CHECKING AND TOLD ME ABOUT THE RECALL AND THAT I NEEDED TO TAKE TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP TO GET IT FIXED. I CALLED THE FORD DEALERSHIP AND THEY REFUSED TO DO THE WORK. 1. REAR WHEEL BEARINGS HUB ASSEMBLY , FAILURES.. RIGHT FAILED AT NEARLY 58K MILES. OF COURSE AFTER WARRANTY ! LEFT FAILED AT NEARLY 73K MILES. HOWLING SOUND BEING PRODUCED. IT IS COSTING LOT OF MONEY TO REPLACE THESE PARTS. NOT GOOD. I HAVE NEVER HAD A CAR IN THE LAST 40 YEARS WHERE THE WHEEL BEARING ASSEMBLIES HAVE FAILED. REFER TO WSM, SECTION 204-02, FOR REAR WHEEL HUB BEARING AND TRAILING ARM/KNUCKLE REPLACEMENT. ONLY REPLACE THE REAR SUSPENSION TRAILING ARM/KNUCKLE ASSEMBLY AND REAR BEARING HUB ON THE SIDE WITH THE CONCERN. FAILING TO INSTALL A NEW REAR SUSPENSION TRAILING ARM/KNUCKLE ASSEMBLY WHEN INSTALLING A NEW REAR BEARING HUB ASSEMBLY WILL RESULT IN PREMATURE BEARING NOISE/WEAR. FORD NEEDS TO BE RESPONSIVE, ON DEFECTIVE PARTS. I CONTACTED THEM , 11/14 WHEN THE RIGHT FAILED, AND THEIR RESPONSE WAS: SORRY , YOU ARE OUT OF WARRANTY. THEY SHOULD HAVE ISSUED A RECALL IN 2010. WHEN WE WERE NOT OUT OF WARRANTY. POTENTIALLY, WHEELS CAN FREEZE UP.
I HAVE A 2008 FORD EDGE THAT I BOUGHT IN MAY OF 2013. I HAVE BEEN HEARING LOUD GROWLING NOISES FROM THE REAR WHEELS IN THE PAST MONTH (OCT 2014) ALSO THE STEERING SEEMED TO BE EFFECTED BY THE PROBLEM. TOOK IT TO MY MECHANIC AND HE FOUND BOTH REAR WHEEL BEARING ARE SHOT AT 62000 MILES. THEY NEED TO BE REPLACED OF COURSE BECAUSE THE CAR IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE. AFTER HEARING THIS I LOOKED UP OTHER COMPLAINTS FROM OTHER FORD EDGE OWNERS. THIS IS NOT AN ISOLATED INCIDENT AND MOST OF THE FAILURES HAVE OCCURRED AROUND THE 55000 - 64000 MILES. FORD KNOWS THERE IS A PROBLEM AND IS DOING NOTHING ABOUT THIS DANGEROUS CONDITION. SHAME ON FORD! SO IT IS COSTING ME $1200.00 AND SOME CHANGE WHICH I CANNOT AFFORD, TO FIX MY CAR. MY 2008 FORD EDGE HAS TIRE PRESSURE MONITORS WHICH INDICATES MY TIRE PRESSURE IS DANGEROUSLY LOW WHEN I CHANGE RIMS AND TIRES TO MY SNOW TIRES TWICE A YEAR. WHEN I PURCHASED THE TIRES FROM LES SCHWAB TIRES I WAS ASSURED THAT THEY WHERE ABLE TO RESET THIS SYSTEM IF NECESSARY. APPARENTLY THIS IS NOT THE CASE AND THE SYSTEM MUST BE RESET BY A FORD SERVICE. LAST YEAR FORD RESET THE SYSTEM WHICH TAKES ABOUT ONE MINUTE, WHEN I BROUGHT MY CAR IN FOR 5000 MILE SERVICE.. THIS YEAR I WAS TOLD BY LAKE CITY FORD IN COEUR D ALENE, ID WHEN I BROUGHT MY CAR IN FOR SERVICE THAT THERE IS A $24.95 CHARGE TO RESET THE TPM'S. KNOWING HUMAN NATURE IT IS MY BELIEF THAT IF THE CONSUMING PUBLIC HAS TO PAY $25 TWICE A YEAR TO RESET THE SYSTEM THE ADVANTAGE OF HAVING TPM WILL NOT BE OF ANY BENEFIT SINCE MOST PEOPLE WILL SIMPLY NOT HAVE THE SYSTEM RESET AND IGNORE DASH BOARD WARNINGS OF POTENTIAL TIRE FAILURE. THIS IS NOT IN THE BEST INTEREST OF PUBLIC SAFETY AND POTENTIALLY VERY DANGEROUS. A SAFETY SYSTEM SO IMPORTANT AND A ONE MINUTE RESET PROCESS TO RESET IT DOES NOT SEEM LOGICAL TO DISCOURAGE IT'S BENEFITS BY CHANGING $24.95. *TR

THESE WHEELS HAVE A PLASTIC COVER THAT CAN NOT BE REMOVED. THERE IS NO WAY TO INSPECT THE CAST WHEEL BEHIND THE COVER. ALTHOUGH ONLY MINOR IMPACT, THE PLASTIC COVER WAS DAMAGED BY THE CURB.
