IVE FOUND MANY COMPLAINTS ON THIS PROBLEM AND THEY ALL SAID THEY SAME THING THAT THE REPROGRAMMING THE COMPUTER IN THE CAR DONT WORK AND THATS HOW THEY TRIED TO FIX MINE I WISH THEY WOULD HAVE WARNED ME MORE BEFORE BUYING THIS VEHICLE IVE FOUND TOO MANY COMPLAINTS ON THE SAME SITUATION. *AK

BUT THE TAILGATE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE CONTACT CONTACTED THE SERVICE DEALER, BUT THEY WANTED TO CHARGE HIM FOR REPAIRS. HE HAS NOT CONTACTED THE MANUFACTURER.*AK

WHILE DRIVING BRAKES AND STEERING LOCKED UP AND ENGINE SHUT OFF WITHOUT ANY WARNING .DRIVER LOST CONTROL OF VEHICLE, RESULTING IN AN ACCIDENT.*AK THE CONSUMER STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER HAD ISSUED TWO TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETINS ON DEFECTS OF THE VEHICLE, AND THE PROBLEMS OCCURING WERE THE RESULT OF ONE OF THOSE DEFECTS. *YH
CONSUMER SAYS THAT ENGINE HAD SHUT DOWN WITHOUT WARNING AND WITH FOOT OFF OF THE ACCELERATOR WHILE DESCENDING A SHALLOW HILL AT 30 MPH. CONSUMER IS CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY IMPLICATIONS OF LOSING POWER STEERING AND POWER BRAKES WITHOUT WARNING IF HEAVY TRAFFIC. *SCC
2002 FORD ESCAPE WILL STALL WHILE DRIVING. STEERING WHEEL AND BRAKES LOCKED AT THE TIME OF THE STALLING. THE CAR BECOMES UNMANUVERABLE AND THE DRIVER HAS TO PUT THE CAR IN PARK IN MOVING TRAFFIC IN ORDER TO RESTART THE CAR. HAVE BROUGHT THIS CAR IN TO THE DEALERSHIP 4 TIMES NOW. EACH TIME THE DEALERSHIP HAS ATTEMPTED TO REPAIR THE CAR BY "RE-CALIBRATING" WHICH MEANS UPDATING THE SOFTWARE. THE SOFTWARE UPDATES HAVE DONE NOTHING FOR THE CAR AS OF YET. CONFIDENCE IN THE ESCAPE IS NO LONGER THERE AND THE DRIVER(S) ARE STUCK WITH A LEMON THAT FORD WILL NOT BUY BACK. CAR IS VERY UNSAFE FOR DRIVER AND OTHER DRIVER'S ON THE ROAD. MR
WHILE DRIVING DOWN HILL 25-35MPH THE VEHICLE STALLED OUT WITHOUT WARNING. THE DEALER HAS REPLACED THE RELAYS IN THE ENGINE, AND THE PROBLEM HAS REOCCURRED AGAIN. PROVIDE FURTHER INFORMATION. *MR
WE DRIVE A 2002 FORD ESCAPE. IT IS DRIVEN BY BOTH MY HUSBAND (BILL) AND MYSELF. WHILE DRIVING WE STOPPED IN FRONT OF A RESTAURANT TO EAT. WE PULLED INTO PARKING PLACE, FOOT ON BRAKE TO STOP AND CAR SUDDENLY ACCELLERATED AND WE ALMOST WENT INTO THE RESTAURANT WINDOW. MY HUSBAND WAS ABLE TO HOLD THE CAR BACK BY USING A LOT OF PRESSURE ON THE BRAKE. HE THEN REACHED DOWN AND TURNED THE KEY OFF. WE HAVE HAD THIS EXPERIENCE ON 4 SEPARTE OCCASSIONS AND HAD THE CAR IN THE GARAGE ON 6 OCCASSIONS FOR THIS PROBLEM. THE LAST TIME THIS HAPPENED WAS 4 WEEKS AGO. I WAS DRIVING. I PULLED INTO A PARKING PLACE, HAD MY HAND ON THE GEAR SHIFT TO PUT INTO PARK WHEN THE CAR SUDDENLY ACCELLERATED. I WAS NOT ABLE TO PUT AS MUCH PRESSURE ON THE BRAKE AS MY HUSBAND AND WENT INTO A PLATE GLASS WINDOW OF A RESTAURANT THAT FORTUNATELY WAS NOT OPEN AND BEING REMODELED. I DID $4,000 WORTH OF DAMAGE TO THE CAR AND THE RESTAURANT IS CLAIMING $30,000 DAMAGE TO THEIR BUILDING. AGAIN WE HAD IT IN THE GARAGE. THEY CAN FIND NOTHING WRONG WITH IT. IT USUALLY HAPPENS WHEN YOUR FOOT IS ON THE BRAKE. WE HAVE HEARD FROM FORD THAT THEY CAN DO NOTHING ABOUT IT. WE ARE AFRAID TO DRIVE IT AS SOONER OR LATER, WHEN IT HAPPENS, SOMEONE IS GOING TO GET HURT. WE ARE JUST LOOKING FOR A CAR THAT WORKS PROPERLY. OTHER TIMES WHEN DRIVING ALONG IT WOULD ACCELLERATE ON ITS OWN BUT THEN CUT BACK. MOST OFTEN WHEN YOUR FOOT IS ON THE BRAKE FOR SOME REASON. FORD GARAGE CAN FIND NOTHING WRONG AND FORD CO. WHILE DRIVING AT 35MPH ON FLAT SURFACE AND WITH NO WARNING ENGINE WILL STALL, CAUSING CONSUMER TO PULL OVER. DEALER WILL BE NOTIFIED.*AK
2002 ESCAPE STALLED TWICE WITHOUT WARNING - DANGEROUS, AS YOU ARE UNAWARE WHEN THIS HAPPENS EXCEPT THAT THE STEERING BECOMES TIGHT, DIFFICULT TO STEER AND BRAKING IS DIFFICULT. HAPPENS WHILE TRAVELING AT 40 MPH. NO LIGHTS COME ON IN THE DASH TO LET YOU KNOW - VERY SCARY.*AK
ON THREE SEPARATE OCCASIONS WHILE DRIVING BETWEEN 35-40 MPH THE CAR STALLED IN TRAFFIC. THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, THE OIL LIGHT CAME ON AND I LOST POWER STEERING AND POWER BRAKES. EACH INCIDENT OCCURED AFTER THE CAR HAD NOT BEEN DRIVEN FOR A LONG PERIOD. THE FIRST TIME WAS AFTER I HAD BEEN AT WORK ALL DAY AND WAS GOING HOME. THE SECOND AND THIRD TIMES WERE FIRST THING IN THE MORNING AFTER THE CAR HAD BEEN RUNNING APPROXIMATELY 10 MINUTES. THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER HAVE BEEN NOTIFIED.*AK

WHILE DRIVING ON A RURAL ROAD, SPEED 45 MPH, CAR STALLED, LOST BRAKES AND STEERING. PULLED OVER, TURNED OFF KEY AND RESTARTED CAR. CAR RAN FINE ALL THE WAY TO THE DEALERSHIP. DEALERSHIP TESTED "EEC" SYSTEM AND TESTED "OK". RAN MESSAGES AND FOUND TECH SERVICE BULLETIN DATED 2/11/02. REPROGRAMMED PCM AND DID COMPLETE TSB. CAR NOW RUNS OK. I ASKED THEM IF MY COMPANY SHOULD NOTIFY EMPLOYEES WHO OWN THIS VEHICLE AND/OR IF FORD SHOULD BE NOTIFYING THE GENERAL PUBLIC. THEY SAID NO. PROBLEM INTERMITTENT AND NO WAY TO FIND THE PROBLEM UNLESS IT HAPPENS. NOT PLEASED WITH THIS ANSWER. WHAT IF I HAD BEEN ON A HIGHWAY?*AK
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 FORD ESCAPE. IMMEDIATELY AFTER PURCHASING THE VEHICLE IN AUGUST OF 2002, IT BEGAN STALLING AND LOST ALL POWER. THE CONTACT RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE IN APRIL OF 2004 FOR NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 04V165000 (POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:CONTROL MODULE). SHE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A LOCAL DEALER AND RECEIVED HER FREE REPAIR. IN AUGUST OF 2008, THE FAILURE RECURRED. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 10-20 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED AND LOST ALL POWER; HOWEVER, IT WAS ABLE TO BE RESTARTED. ON AUGUST 11, 2008, WHILE BACKING OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY AT AN UNKNOWN SPEED, THE VEHICLE LOST POWER. THE CONTACT LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE RECURRED TWO ADDITIONAL TIMES THE SAME DAY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL DEALER AND A COMPLETE DIAGNOSTIC TEST WAS PERFORMED; HOWEVER, NO FAILURES COULD BE FOUND. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT SINCE THEY ALREADY REPAIRED HER VEHICLE, THEY WERE NOT LIABLE FOR ANOTHER REPAIR. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 51,007 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 200.
PROBLEMS WITH POWER ASSIST, ENGINE AND BRAKES. MR
2002 FORD ESCAPE. WHILE MAKING LOW SPEED TURNS, CLICKING NOSIE COMING FROM FRONT END WHEEL WELL AREA. CLICKING NOSIE SOUNDS LIKE ROTATINING PARTS ARE BINDING. FREQUENCY OF THE CLICKING SOUND IS DIRECTLY RELATED TO VEHICLE SPEED (THE SLOWER THE SPEED, THE LONGER THE TIME BETWEEN EACH SUCESSIVE CLICK). THE SOUND OCCURS WITH EITHER RIGHT OR LEFT TURNS, BUT IS MUCH MORE NOTICABLE WHILE TURNING LEFT. THIS CLICKING IS NOT A HEALTHY SOUND AND I AM WORRIED ABOUT A FAILURE OF THE AFFECTED PARTS.*AK
I PURCHASED A 2002 FORD ESCAPE. IT CURRENTLY HAS 10K MILES ON IT. WHILE GOING DOWN A HILL, THE ENGINE STOPPED, POWER STEERING WENT OUT AND THE POWER BRAKES DIDN'T WORK. LUCKLY I MANAGED TO PULL OVER, PUT THE CAR IN PARK AND RESTART THE ENGINE. THE SAME PROBLEM, SAME SITUATION OCCUR A COUPLE OF DAYS LATER. BOTH TIMES OCCURRED WHILE I WAS GOING DOWN A HILL AT ABOUT 30-35 MPH. I NOTICED THAT THE RPM READING WHEN THE ACCELLERATOR ISN'T DEPRESSED IS VERY LOW. IT SOMETIMES DIPS CLOSE TO ZERO. NORMAL RPM FOR SITTING IN IDLE IS AROUND 1. IT'S CURRENTLY AT THE DEALERSHIP.

FIRST INCIDENT OCURRED MAY 10,2002 DRIVING FROM WORK TO MY HOME. IN A STOP LIGHT, WHEN APPROACHING AN INTERSECTION, SUDDENLY AT THE POWER SYSTEM SHOT OFF AND THE VEHICLE DID NOT RE-START FOR ABOUT 20 MINUTES. PROBLEM WAS REPORTED TO THE DEALER AND NO MAJOR CAUSE WAS FOUND. ONCE AGAIN ON AUGUST 2, 2002 THE SAME THING HAPPENED, DRIVING FROM WORK TO HOME, SUDDENLY THE VEHICLE SHOT OFF ALL, THE SYSTEMS DOWN AND VEHICLE DID NOT RESTART FOR ABOUT 20 MINUTES. VEHICLE IS TAKEN TO THE DEALER AND APPARENTLY THE IS NO MAJOR PROBLEM FOUND. AFTER THAT THERE IS A COMPLAINT WITH THE DEALER CLAIMING FOR A VEHICLE REPLACEMENT. THEY DO NOT FIND THE CONDITION OR PROBLEM.*AK

I HAVE OWNED A 2001 AND 2002 ESCAPE BOTH HAVE ENGINES WITH THE SAME PROBLEM - THE ENGINE SHUTTING DOWN ON A HILL GOING 40 MPH, LOSING BRAKES AND STEERING LEADING TO A LIFE THREATENING SITUATION!!*AK
ON MARCH 30, 2002, I PURCHASED A BRAND NEW FORD ESCAPE XLT AT HAYWARD FORD IN HAYWARD, CA. I HAD TAKEN THE VEHICLE PREVIOUSLY TO THE FORD SERVICE DEPARTMENT FOR A LOUD KNOCKING NOISE THAT THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN MAKING AND FORD WAS UNABLE TO VERIFY MY COMPLAINT. ON JULY 20, 2002, I ATTEMPTED TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE TO LOS ANGELES FOR A FAMILY REUNION WITH FOUR SMALL CHILDREN IN THE CAR WHICH INCLUDED MY TWO DAUGHTERS, MY NEICE AND MY NEPHEW. GOING AT A SPEED OF ABOUT 65 MILES PER HOUR, THE ENGINE CAUGHT ON FIRE AND ALL ASPECTS OF THE VEHICLE SHUT DOWN INCLUDING THE POWER STEERING AND THE BRAKES. I HAD TO STRUGGLE TO GET THE VEHICLE TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE CAR IS NOW SITTING AT MAGIC FORD IN VALENCIA, CA WHERE I HAD IT TOWED. FORD HAS REFUSED TO PAY FOR THE RENTAL CAR THAT I AM FORCED TO DRIVE. FORD HAS NOT BOTHERED TO CONTACT ME. OUT OF CONCERN FOR THE SAFTEY OF MY FAMILY AND OTHERS, THE FORD ESCAPE NEEDS TO BE RECALLED BEFORE SOMEONE IS KILLED OR SERIOUSLY INJURED.*AK
THE FIRST INCIDENCE (MAY-2002), WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 40 MPH THE ENGINE SHUT-OFF AND THE STEERING LOCK. LUCKILY THE VEHICLE CAME TO A STOP AT THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WITH NO INJURIES. THE VEHICLE EVENTUALLY RESTARTED AND WAS RETURNED TO THE DEALERSHIP. THEY REPROGRAMMED THE PCM AND SAID THE PROBLEM WAS FIXED. THE SAME THING HAPPENED ABOUT 6-WEEKS LATER ALONG THE SAME STRETCH OF ROAD, AND LUCKILY AGAIN NOBODY WAS HURT. THE VEHICLE WAS AGAIN RETURNED TO THE DEALER. THIS TIME THEY SAID THAT THEY CAN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG AND GAVE IT BACK TO US WITHOUT A FIX. I AM AFRAID THAT NEXT TIME IT HAPPENS IT WILL BE IN TRAFFIC AND SOMEONE WILL BE INJURED OR KILLED. THIS VEHICLE SHOULD NOT BE ON THE ROAD.*AK
DRIVING AT APPROX. 35 MPH, ENGINE STALLED, LOSING CONTROL OF STEERING, BRAKES, AND ACCELERATION. HAPPENED ON 2 SEPERATE OCCASIONS, WITHIN ABOUT 1 MONTH. CAR HAS BEEN TAKEN TO DEALERSHIP TO INVESTIGATE PROBLEM, DEALER COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG.*AK
DURING COLD WEATHER A WHITE SUBSTANCE WILL BUILD UP INSIDE FRONT WINDSHIELD, MAKING IT HARD FOR CONSUMER TO SEE WHILE DRIVING. DEALER NOTIFIED.*AK
THE VEHICLE HAS A TENDENCY TO STALL WHILE IT IS BEING DRIVEN, CREATING AN UNSAFE SITUATION. ON THREE OCCASIONS I HAVE TAKEN MY ESCAPE BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP TO HAVE THIS PROBLEM ADDRESSED, AS PER THE MANUFACTURERS WARRANTY. EACH TIME I AM TOLD THAT THERE IS NO GUARANTEE THAT THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN FIXED AND THAT IT MAY HAPPEN AGAIN. TO DATE, OVER THE SPAN OF MY OWNERSHIP, THE VEHICLE HAS DEMONSTRATED THIS PROBLEM SIX TIMES. EACH TIME IT HAS CREATED AN UNSAFE CONDITION FOR MY FAMILY AND ME. THIS A VERY SERIOUS ISSUE WHICH THE SERVICE STAFF CANNOT SEEM TO FIX. THE STALLING DOES NOT OCCUR WITH ANY PARTICULAR FREQUENCY. IT HAS OCCURRED WHILE DRIVING HOME, WHILE DRIVING TO WORK, WHILE APPROACHING A STOP SIGN, AND WHILE DRIVING DOWN A HILL APPROACHING A BEND IN THE ROAD. SINCE I AM NOT ABLE TO USE THIS VEHICLE SAFELY AS INTENDED WHEN I PURCHASED IT, DUE TO A MANUFACTURERS DEFECT, I AM SEEKING A REMEDY OTHER THAN SERVICE DEPT APPOINTMENTS. FORD HAS LEFT ME WITH NO CHOICE BUT TO REQUEST A REMEDY, AS PER SECTION 59.1-207.13 OF THE VIRGINIA LEMON LAW.*AK
ON TWO OCCASIONS, MY 2002 FORD ESCAPE HAS STALLED FOR NO APPARENT REASON. THE FIRST TIME THE VEHICLE STALLED I WAS SLOWING DOWN FROM APPROXIMATELY 45 MILES AN HOUR. THE SECOND TIME IT HAPPENED I WAS EXITING THE INTERSTATE. BOTH TIMES THE VEHICLE STALLED I LOST THE POWER STEERING CAPABLILITES, BUT WAS ABLE TO IMMEDIATELY RESTART IT. THIS MATTER NEEDS AN IMMEDIATE INVESTIGATION BEFORE INJURIES OR FATALITIES ARE REPORTED. I HAD HEARD NUMBEROUS COMPLAINTS BEING FILED WITH THE NHTSA ABOUT THIS PROBLEM, AND I HAVE CONTACTED FORD ABOUT THE PROBLEM ONLY TO BE TOLD FORD IS NOT AWARE OF ANY PROBLEMS. *AK

MY 2002 FORD ESCAPE WAS LESS THAN TWO MONTHS OLD AND HAD LESS THAN 1000 MILES WHEN I RETURNED TO THE DEALER FOR REPAIR. I HEAR A LOUD CONTINUOUS CLICKING NOISE WHEN I TURN THE STEERING WHEEL TO THE RIGHT. FORD HAS ISSUED A SPECIAL SERVICE MESSAGE (#16016) DESCRIBING THIS PROBLEM WITH 2001-2002 ESCAPES.
