THE VEHICLE HAS A VIBRATION IN THE POWER TRAIN AROUND THE 45-55 MPH. THE VIBRATION IS PRESENT DAILY AND CAUSES THE ENTIRE VEHICLE TO SHAKE. *TR
I HAVE EXPERIENCED SEVERAL CASES OVER THE YEARS WITH THE 2005 FORD ESCAPE SEEMING TO IDLE VERY-VERY LOW AND WHEN ATTEMPTING TO ACCELERATE (FOR INSTANCE FROM A STOP SIGN) THE ACCELERATION IS VERY VERY SLOW AND THEN RAMPS UP AFTER A FEW SECONDS.THIS OCCURS INTERMITTENTLY BUT REGULARLY AND DESPITE TAKING IT TO SEVERAL REPAIR SHOPS, NONE HAVE MANAGED TO PROVIDE A REASONABLE EXPLANATION BUT HAVE ALL RECOGNIZED IT. RECENTLY I HAVE NOTICED ISSUES, ESPECIALLY AT HIGHWAYS SPEEDS, OF THE VEHICLE "SHUDDERING" AS IF THE BRAKES ARE HAVING TROUBLE SLOWING THE VEHICLE WHICH IM CONCERNED MAY BE FROM THE THROTTLE NOT DISENGAGING PROPERLY WHEN RELEASED (ALMOST LIKE ITS STUCK OR FROZEN). WE HAVE RECENTLY IN MY REGION OF THE COUNTRY BEEN EXPERIENCING A FEW COLD SNAPS AND THAT BRINGS ME TO THE MOST RECENT ISSUE. WHEN ATTEMPTING TO USE THE VEHICLE TODAY, I NOTICED THAT THE ACCELERATOR SEEMED "STUCK" OR FROZEN. I DEPRESSED IT A FEW TIMES, NO LUCK AS IT SEEMED "FROZEN". I TOOK IT TO MEAN THAT THE COLD (IT GOT DOWN BELOW 15* F. IN GEORGIA) AND LET IT RUN FOR A BIT TO WARM. I PUSHED ACCELERATOR AND IT SEEMED UNSTUCK. I PUT IN REVERSE AND ATTEMPTED TO ACCELERATE BACKWARDS. I FOUND THE PEDAL WOULD NOT COME OFF THE FLOORBOARD. I STOPPED THE VEHICLE AND AFTER LOOKING AT THE PEDAL, I WAS ABLE TO MOVE IT FREELY AND LOOKING AT THE CONNECTION I THOUGHT IT HAD BROKEN OR BECAME DISCONNECTED. I CAME BACK FROM WORK AFTER GETTING RIDE FROM WIFE AND WENT TO INSPECT IT. THE PEDAL THIS TIME ACTED AS EXPECTED ALTHOUGH I COULD HEAR SQUEAKING AND IT THUMPED WHEN I HIT THE BRAKES. IT SEEMS THAT THE COD HAD FROZEN SOMETHING OR EXACERBATED WHATEVER WAS CAUSING ISSUES IN GENERAL. I CALLED FORD AND THEY MENTIONED SOMETHING HAD BEEN DONE IN 06 AND THEN I READ ARTICLE ABOUT 17 YEAR OLD WHO DIED AFTER HER ESCAPE THROTTLE BECAME STUCK IN A SIMILAR WAY AFTER HAVING A RECENT REPAIR. *TR
MY 2005 FORD ESCAPE HAS HAD A LOUD BANGING IN REAR PASSENGER SIDE FOR SEVERAL MONTHS. I HAS ASSUMED THAT THE STRUT NEEDED REPLACED. UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION MY MECHANIC AND I NOTICED A TERRIBLE AMOUNT OF RUST AND CORROSION TO REAR PASSENGER WHEEL WELL THAT HAS BOLTS ATTACHED TO STRUT. YOU CAN SEE INTO INTERIOR OF VEHICLE FROM OUTSIDE. I RESEARCHED RECALLS OF THESE PROBLEM AND FOUND NONE, ALTHOUGH THERE WERE SEVERAL OTHER COMPLAINTS FOR THE SAME ISSUE. THIS SEEMS TO HAPPEN ONLY ON THE REAR PASSENGER SIDE ALTHOUGH HAS ME WORRIED ABOUT OTHER COMPLICATIONS THAT COULD ARISE. THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS ISSUE THAT THE FORD MOTOR CO. SHOULD ADDRESS POST HASTE. I FEAR THAT MY FAMILIES AND OTHERS LIVES ARE AT STAKE IF THIS PROBLEM IS NOT TAKEN CARE OF SOON. *TR
AROUND 150,000 MILES THE VEHICLE STARTED STALLING WHEN SLOWING DOWN OR COMING TO A STOP AFTER EXITING THE HIGHWAY, BUT IT WOULD ONLY HAPPEN ON VERY HOT, HUMID DAYS. I TOOK A 2,000 MILE ROUND TRIP DOWN SOUTH AND IT STARTED HAPPENING MORE FREQUENTLY, STALLING AT EVERY TOLL BOOTH, AND DIDN'T NEED TO BE AS HOT OR HUMID FOR IT TO HAPPEN. THEY FINALLY DIAGNOSED IT AS THE TRANSMISSION SOLENOID, WHICH I REPLACED. IT RAN OK FOR A FEW MONTHS, THEN IT STARTED UP AGAIN. THIS TIME THEY SAID IT APPEARS TO BE RUNNING TOO RICH, BUT THEY DON'T KNOW WHY OR HOW TO FIX IT (I HAVE CONSULTED 2 GARAGES). IT INTERMITTENTLY IDLES ROUGH, ACTING AS THOUGH IT WANTS TO STALL OUT AND ACTUALLY HAS SEVERAL TIMES. *TR
WE WERE ACCELERATING TO GET ON THE INTERSTATE WHEN THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY DIED WITHOUT WARNING. NO TELLING WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF WE WERE DRIVING AT FREEWAY SPEEDS. WE COASTED TO THE BREAKDOWN LANE AND HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE FORD DEALER WHO STATED THE COMPUTER (PCM), ALL THE COIL OVER PLUGS (COP) AND SPARK PLUGS WERE DAMAGED AND NEEDED REPLACEMENT. THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE AS IT IS DESCRIBED EXACTLY IN FORD SERVICE BULLETIN TSB 09-2-6. THE SPARK PLUGS IN THE 2005 AND 2006 CAUSE RADIO FREQUENCY INTERFERENCE WITH THE PCM WHICH DAMAGES THE PCM AND THE OTHER COMPONENTS. THE LEAST FORD COULD HAVE DONE WAS NOTIFY US THAT REPLACING THE SPARK PLUGS COULD HAVE PREVENTED THIS VERY EXPENSIVE REPAIR. THE PROBLEMS DON'T END THERE. A FEW DAYS AFTER THE REPAIR WE WERE AGAIN ACCELERATING TO GET ON THE INTERSTATE WHEN THE VEHICLE LOST POWER AND WOULD NOT GO OVER 50MPH. WE BROUGHT THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE FORD DEALER WHO STATED THE CATALYTIC CONVERTERS (THERE ARE 3 OF THEM) WERE CLOGGED DUE TO RAW FUEL COMING IN CONTACT WITH THE CONVERTERS PROBABLY DUE TO THE PREVIOUS ENGINE PROBLEMS. THE COST TO FIX THE CONVERTERS IS EVEN MORE THAN THE COST OF THE INITIAL REPAIR. WE'VE DECIDED TO NOT HAVE THE DEALER REPAIR THE VEHICLE AS THE TOTAL COST OF ALL THE REPAIRS WOULD EXCEED THE VALUE OF THE VEHICLE. WE CALLED FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE AND THEY WERE OF NO HELP IN THIS SITUATION. I THINK FORD SHOULD COVER THE COSTS OF THESE REPAIRS FOR AN ISSUE KNEW EXISTED. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY THERE HASN'T BEEN A RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM AS I SEE THAT IT HAS HAPPENED TO A LOT OF OTHER 2005 ESCAPES LISTED IN YOUR DATABASE. I IMAGINE WE WILL MORE OF THESE FAILURES AS THESE VEHICLES AGE. *TR
WHILE TRAVELING IN THE HIGH SPEED LANE AT APPROXIMATELY 2 AM, THE VEHICLE LOST ENGINE POWER WITHOUT ANY NOTICE AS THE ENGINE SHUT OFF AND THE POWER WAS REDUCED TO MINIMAL POWER GIVEN BY THE ELECTRIC MOTOR. THIS CAUSED AN INABILITY TO MAINTAIN SPEED ON A VERY DANGEROUS OVERPASS CURVE OF THE FREEWAY AND NEARLY CAUSED TWO VEHICLES IN THE IMMEDIATE PROXIMITY TO COLLIDE WITH MY VEHICLE AS SPEED RAPIDLY DROPPED AND THE VEHICLE SAID TO "PULL OVER ANDS SHUT OFF VEHICLE SAFELY". THIS PART OF THE FREEWAY HAD NO PULL OVER SPOT NOR DID IT HAVE AN AREA TO REALLY SAFELY PULL OFF THE FREEWAY. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME THE CAR HAS DONE THIS AT HIGH SPEED WITHIN TWO WEEKS. IT HAS DONE THIS APPROXIMATELY 1-0 TIMES AT LOW SPEEDS ON CITY STREETS. THE CAR IS ABLE TO BE DRIVEN AFTER SHUTTING OFF THE POWER, LETTING IT SIT, AND THEN RESTARTING THE SYSTEM. THERE IS AN ACCOMPANYING OVERHEATING THAT OCCURTS AS A RESULT OF THE ENGINE SHUTTING OFF, CAUSING THE ENGINE TO BE UNABLE TO BE EASILY RESTARTED AT THAT POINT. THIS EVENT GIVES NO WARNING OR INDICATION IT WILL HAPPEN AND IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION FOR ANY DRIVER TO BE THRUST INTO. IF IT HAD BEEN RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC, I AM CERTAIN THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN ACCIDENTS AND VEHICLE COLLISIONS AS A RESULT. *JS
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 FORD ESCAPE. WHILE STOPPED IN A PARKING SPACE, THE CONTACT DEPRESSED THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL BUT NOTICED THAT THE PEDAL HAD BECOME HARD AND WOULD NOT RESPOND. THE CONTACT PLACED THE VEHICLE IN NEUTRAL AND THEN BACK INTO DRIVE WHILE CONTINUALLY APPLYING PRESSURE TO THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. THE VEHICLE JERKED FORWARD AND PROCEEDED TO ACCELERATE. THE FAILURE RECURRED INTERMITTENTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,000.
WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD CAR JUST QUIT TOWED TO DEALERSHIP ONLY TO FIND OUT THE COMPUTER SHORTED OUT WHICH ALSO DESTROYED ALL THE COILS. I JUST PRINTED OUT 13 PAGES OF THIS HAVING HAPPENED TO OTHER ESCAPE OWNERS AND THAT A FORD SERVICE BULLETIN (09-2-6) WAS AT ONE TIME ISSUED--- THIS WILL COST A TON OF MONEY TO CORRECT FOR A PROBLEM FORD HAS KNOWN ABOUT FOR SOME TIME. WHEN MINE QUIT I HAD SMOKE POURING OUT FROM UNDER THE HOOD SO THERE WAS A POTENTIAL FOR A FIRE AND JUST QUITTING WITH NO WARNING-- WHY HAS FORD NOT HAD A RECALL ON THIS ISSUE FOR WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN A LIFE THREATENING SITUATION? *JS
AS I DROVE MY FORD ESCAPE 2005 DOWN A HILL THE BRAKE LINE ON THE PASSENGER SIDE RUPTURED, CAUSING THE BRAKE FLUID TO LEAK WHICH QUICKLY RESULTED IN NO BRAKING ABILITY. I MANAGED TO STOP MY CAR BY DOWN SHIFTING INTO FIRST GEAR AND USING THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. I WAS NOT ABLE TO CONTROL THE CAR BEFORE GOING THROUGH A STOP SIGN, FORTUNATELY, NO CARS OR PEDESTRIANS WERE IN THE WAY. THE MECHANIC WHO FIXED THE PROBLEM REPLACED THE BRAKE LINE ON BOTH THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDES, AS THE DRIVER SIDE BRAKE LINE WAS CLOSE TO RUPTURING, TOO. *JB
MY CAR STALLED ON A MAJOR HIGHWAY. DIAGNOSED WITH A DEFECTIVE PCM. FORD HAS BEEN AWARE OF THIS COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS PARTICULAR VEHICLE. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 FORD ESCAPE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 70 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED AS THE ENGINE WARNING LAMP ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE THE TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED THAT THE PCM AND IGNITION COILS WERE DEFECTIVE AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 190,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 195,000.
MY ESCAPE BEGAN MISSING AND THEN DIED AT 65MPH, NARROWLY AVOIDED ACCIDENT. TOWED TO DEALERSHIP: BAD COILS, BAD COMPUTER. DEALERSHIP REPLACED THESE ITEMS. PROBLEM QUICKLY RETURNED. THIS TIME MORE BAD COILS. (SOME BAD COILS ARE SAME ONES THEY JUST REPLACED). DEALERSHIP REPLACED SPARKPLUGS THIS TIME. PROBLEM RETURNED THE NEXT DAY. DEALERSHIP HAS HAD VEHICLE A WEEK AND A HALF THIS TIME AND HAS NO CLUE HOW TO REPAIR. *TR
FIRST OCCURRENCE OF PROBLEM: 48800 MILES, 5/2012. ENGINE LIGHT ON AND ENGINE MISFIRING. FORD DEALERSHIP DETERMINED FAULTY IGNITION COIL IN # 6 CYLINDER. REPLACED IGNITION COIL AND SPARK PLUG. $295 SECOND OCCURRENCE OF PROBLEM: 74,400 MILES, 11/2013. ENGINE LIGHT ON AND ENGINE MISFIRING. MECHANIC REPLACED SPARKPLUGS IN CYLINDERS # 1-3 ALL AT ONCE SINCE IT IS DIFFICULT TO ACCESS THOSE. $276 ADDITIONAL OCCURRENCES OF SAME PROBLEM: UPON MISFIRING IN 2014 I BOUGHT A CODE READER WHICH INDICATED CYLINDER #5 MISFIRE - REPLACED IGNITION COIL AND SPARK PLUG. MORE MISFIRING INDICATED CYLINDER #4 MISFIRE - REPLACED IGNITION FOIL AND SPARK PLUG. MAJOR PROBLEM UPDATE. 2/2/2015 - TRAVELLING 55 MPH CAR SHUTS OFF, ALL WARNING LIGHTS COME ON, COAST TO SHOULDER. RESTART CAR, SEEMS FINE, NO WARNING LIGHTS. AGAIN CYLINDER # 4 MISFIRING - REPLACED SPARK PLUG. MY RESEARCH INDICATES THE ECM/PCM MAY BE DAMAGED AND THAT THIS IS A VERY FREQUENT PROBLEM WITH THIS CAR, OFTEN MANIFESTING AFTER THE WARRANTY EXPIRES/RECALL MILEAGE, AND COSTS $2000-$3000 OR MORE. I DON'T WAN'T TO PAY TO HAVE IT FIXED BECAUSE MANY PEOPLE HAVE HAD THE PCM FRIED MULTIPLE TIMES BUT I'M SCARED IT WILL SHUT DOWN WHILE DRIVING AGAIN AND THINK THIS SHOULD BE COVERED BY A RECALL. MANY PEOPLE ARE HAVING THIS PROBLEM AND IT APPEARS TO BE CAUSED BY FORD ENGINEERING. PLEASE HELP FORCE A RECALL OR PROVIDE ME WITH INFORMATION FOR A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT. *JS
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 FORD ESCAPE. THE CONTACT STATED THE VEHICLE MADE A LOUD NOISE WHILE DRIVING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL MECHANIC WHERE THE FAILURE WAS LOCATED AT THE PASSENGER REAR WELL AREA, WHICH WAS SEVERELY CORRODED AND CAUSED THE BOLTS AND STRUTS TO CORRODED AND SEPARATE FROM THE WELL. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FRONT AND REAR WHEEL BEARINGS WERE REPLACED BUT WAS UNAWARE IF THE REPLACEMENT WAS DUE TO CORROSION. THE VEHICLE WELL WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 161,000. UPDATED 07/27/12 *BF UPDATED 08/02/12
THROTTLE BODY STICKS WHEN IT'S WET OUTSIDE OR COLD.
I WAS HEADED HOME FROM WORK AND GOT ON THE FREE WAY I NOTICED WHEN I WOULD ACCELERATE MY CAR WOULD START SHAKING. I CALLED MY MECHANIC AND HE SAID TO TRY AND MAKE IT HOME WHEN MY CAR DIED TWICE BUT LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO GET IT STARTED AGAIN TO MAKE IT HOME. I GOT A DIAGNOSTICS DONE ON IT TO FIND OUT THAT THE COMPUTER HAD BURNT OUT ALONG WITH 4 OF THE 6 COILS. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 FORD ESCAPE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT SHE WAS ATTEMPTING TO EXIT FROM A PARKING SPACE WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL DEPRESSED ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE FLOOR. THE CONTACT WAS UNABLE TO BRING THE VEHICLE TO A COMPLETE STOP. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER, WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE FRONT BRAKE LINSE BROKE AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND FILED A REPORT. THE MANUFACTURER THEN REFERRED THE CONTACT TO NHTSA. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 96,406 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 96,506. UPDATED 05/31/12*LJ
OUR 2005 FORD ESCAPE WAS PURCHASED NEW IN MAY 2005. IT HAS BEEN SERVICED BY FORD TECHNICIANS AT FORD DEALERSHIPS EVERY 5,000 MILES, INCLUDING A RECOMMENDED TRANSMISSION FLUSH LAST YEAR. ON A CROSS COUNTRY TRIP, THE SUV'S TRANSMISSION EXHIBITED A PROBLEM FORD MOTOR COMPANY (FMC) KNOWS AS ENGINE STALLING ON ENGAGEMENT/STOPPING. ACCORDING TO A SERVICE BULLETIN DATED MARCH 19, 2007, SUVS WITH THIS FAULTY TRANSMISSION "EXHIBIT AN ENGINE STALL WHEN COMING TO A STOP OR WHEN ENGAGING THE ENGINE INTO DRIVE OR REVERSE. THE CONDITION MAY BE INTERMITTENT AND OFTEN OCCURS AFTER EXTENDED DRIVES. THERE MAY BE NO DIAGNOSTIC CODES STORED. THIS MAY BE CAUSE BY INTERNAL WEAR IN THE TORQUE CONVERTER WHICH PREVENTS IT FROM LOCKING." THIS EXACT FAILURE CAUSED US TO BE STRANDED IN DANGEROUS HEAT CONDITIONS FOR HOURS AS WE WAITED FOR HELP. HOWEVER, FMC HAS KNOWN ABOUT THIS PROBLEM TRANSMISSION SINCE 2007, YET AS AN OWNER OF A CAR LESS THAN TWO YEARS OLD, I WAS NEVER TOLD ABOUT IT. IF I HAD BEEN INFORMED, I WOULD HAVE TAKEN IT YEARS AGO FOR REPAIR PRIOR TO GOING ON AN EXTENDED TRIP AND PUTTING MY FAMILY IN DANGER. INSTEAD, FMC KNOWINGLY ALLOWED VEHICLE OWNERS TO DRIVE WITH THIS FAULTY TRANSMISSION. FORD-CERTIFIED TECH'S FAILED TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM EVEN THOUGH THEY WERE GIVEN THE EXACT SYMPTOMS AND THE POTENTIAL PROBLEM, THE TORQUE CONVERTER. AFTER TECHS TOLD ME THE TRANSMISSION WAS FINE, THE STALL OCCURRED REPEATEDLY UNTIL TOTAL FAILURE JUST OVER 1,200 MILES LATER, AGAIN, STRANDING MY FAMILY ON THE HIGHWAY. I BECAME AWARE OF THE FAULT ONLY AFTER A SEARCH OF OTHER DRIVERS WHO EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM. FMC BEHAVED NEGLIGENTLY IN FAILING TO INFORM CUSTOMERS LIKE ME, LIKELY TO SHIELD ITSELF FROM COSTLY REPAIRS. IN 2007, MY CAR ONLY HAD 24,500 MILES??WELL WITHIN WARRANTY LIMITS. A RECALL FOR VEHICLES OF THIS MODEL YEAR SHOULD BE ORDERED AND I SHOULD BE REFUNDED COST OF REPAIR. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 FORD ESCAPE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WOULD ILLUMINATE SPORADICALLY. THE DEALER DIAGNOSED THAT THE SPARK PLUGS AND PCM MODULE FAILED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE BUT DENIED ANY ASSISTANCE WITH REPAIR TO THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 82,000.
MY BRAKES HAVE A VERY HARD PEDAL FROM TIME TO TIME. REQUIRING ME TO PUMP THE BRAKES TO STOP. MY FORD DEALER TELLS ME IT IS THE MASTER CYLINDER AND IT WILL COST $3000.00 TO REPAIR. THEY ALSO STATE THAT THEY ARE NOT SURE THIS WILL FIX THE PROBLEM. (REMEMBER THIS IS A HYBRID AND BRAKES ARE DIFFERENT) SECOND ISSUE IS THE ELECTRIC DRIVE TRAIN DOES NOT ALLOW THE ENGINE TO SHUT DOWN UNDER 30 MPH LIKE IT IS SUPPOSED TO DUE UNDER 30 MPH. AT TIMES THIS REQUIRES EXTRA BREAKING BECAUSE THE ENGINE DOES NOT IDLE DOWN LIKE IT SHOULD. FORD SEEMS TO BE AWARE OF THESE PROBLEMS. I FOUND SEVERAL COMPLAINTS ON THE WEB DESCRIBING THE SAME PROBLEMS. IT SEEMS FORD HAS DONE VERY LITTLE TO ASSIST THE CUSTOMERS, OR TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. *TR

WAS ABLE TO START THE CAR AGAIN BUT THE RUMBLING CONTINUED AND THE CAR HAD NO PICK UP. TOOK VEHICLE TO MY MECHANIC. MACHINE INDICATED A AND C COILS WERE BAD. REPLACED A AND C COILS, PROBLEM STILL. MECHANIC SAID IT MIGHT BE THE COMPUTER BUT SAID TAKE CAR TO FORD DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC CHECK TO BE SURE. TOOK CAR TO A FORD SERVICE DEPT. FOR DIAGNOSTIC. WAS TOLD THAT THE PROBLEM WAS IN THE A AND C COILS AND PLUGS. WHEN I SAID I ALREADY HAD THOSE REPLACED, HE IMMEDIATELY SAID "THEN THOSE PARTS MUST BE BAD AND/OR THE WIRES ARE BAD AND THEY WOULD HAVE TO TRACE ALL WIRES TO FIND BAD ONES AND REPLACE THEM". THE ESTIMATED COST FOR THE REPAIR $1100. I ASKED IF THE PROBLEM COULD BE THE COMPUTER. SERVICE REP SAID, "OH, NO COMPUTER IS NOT THE PROBLEM". PAID $100 FOR DIAGNOSTIC CHECK. TOOK CAR BACK TO MY MECHANIC, HE TRACED ALL THE WIRES AND DID NOT FIND A SINGLE BAD WIRE. ACCORDING TO MY MECHANIC, THE ONLY OTHER THING IT COULD BE, BASED ON THE WAY THE CAR IS ACTING, IS THE COMPUTER. I PRICED A COMPUTER. IT COSTS ABOUT $495. SO THE QUOTE FROM THE DEALERSHIP NOW MAKES MORE SENSE CONSIDERING THAT THE COST OF THE COMPUTER IS ABOUT HALF OF THE $1100 THEY SAID IT WOULD COST TO TRACE WIRES AND REPLACE PLUGS AND COILS. SO BASED ON THE FORD SERVICE DEPT DIAGNOSIS, CONVERSATION AND QUOTE, FORD KNOWS THIS IS A PROBLEM WITH THE 2005 FORD ESCAPES. OUR 2005 FORD ESCAPE HAS BEEN METICULOUSLY MAINTAINED AT THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS PURCHASED. THIS CAN BE VERIFIED BY CHECKING THE SERVICE RECORDS AT DALE JARRETT FORD, INDIAN TRAIL, NC. ON 2/25/12, THE VEHICLE WAS DIAGNOSED AS HAVING AN OIL LEAK BETWEEN THE MAIN ENGINE BLOCK AND THE CRANKSHAFT CRADLE. THE SEAL BETWEEN THESE TWO FOUNDATIONAL STRUCTURAL PARTS OF THE ENGINE IS A SIMPLE APPLIED BEAD OF SILICONE SEALANT, RATHER THAN A FIXED GASKET. BECAUSE OF THE LOCATION OF THE LEAK, WE WERE TOLD THAT THE MOST COST EFFECTIVE REPAIR IS TO COMPLETELY REPLACE THE ENGINE, RATHER THAN INCUR THE LABOR CHARGES OF TOTALLY DISASSEMBLING THE ENGINE TO REPAIR THIS SEAL. THE PROJECTED COST FOR THIS REPAIR IS $4,000.00 TO $5,000.00. WE FEEL THIS IS A PREMATURE AND CATASTROPHIC FAILURE OF A DESIGN COMPONENT OF THE VEHICLE'S ENGINE. FORD MOTOR COMPANY, BY DIRECT COMMUNICATION, HAS OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE IN THE REPAIR OF THIS PROBLEM, PER THEIR COMPANY POLICY. IN ORDER TO GET TO THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD I WAS FORCED TO CUT ACROSS A LANE OF TRAFFIC WITHOUT WARNING AND WITHOUT POWER. NO OTHER WARNING LIGHTS OR SIGNALS DISPLAYED. HAD THERE BEEN NO SHOULDER, I COULD EASILY HAVE BEEN A HIGH-SPEED CRASH. THE ENGINE STARTED AGAIN AS SOON I TURNED THE KEY AFTER STOPPING THE VEHICLE, BUT STILL NO WARNING LIGHTS OR EXPLANATIONS DISPLAYED. THIS HAPPENED THREE TIMES DURING A 3-HOUR TRIP ACROSS MARYLAND, AND IT HAPPENED AGAIN ONCE ON THE RETURN TRIP TWO DAYS LATER. AN INTERNET SEARCH REVEALS THAT THIS IS NOT AN UNCOMMON PROBLEM WITH FORD HYBRIDS, YET NO RECALL HAS BEEN ISSUED TO REMEDY THIS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS DEFECT. *TR

A PROBLEM IDENTIFIED BY FORD BUT NOT MADE PUBLIC. I CONTACTED DEALER; HE WAS AWARE OF SRB BUT DID NOT ACT ON IT OR INFORM US ABOUT IT. WE ARE NOW FACED WITH A BILL 2X LARGER THAN IT WOULD HAVE BEEN IF DEALER WOULD HAVE FOLLOWED SRB. HE PUT MY WIFE AT RISK (NEARLY HAD A FEW ACCIDENTS) AND FORD AND THE NHTSA ARE PUTTING PEOPLE AT UNDUE RISK BY NOT MAKING THIS INFO. PUBLIC AND SPECIFIC TO OWNERS OF THESE VEHICLES. THE FRONT BRAKE HOSE THAT CONNECTS THE BRAKE LINE TO THE BRAKE CALLIPER ON THE PASSENGER SIDE BEARST A HOLE IN THE BRAKE HOSE CAUSING THE SUV TO LOOSE ALL BRAKE FLUID AND TO SMASH INTO TO VAN INFRONT OF US. THE HOSE BROKE AT THE TOP HALF OF THE HOSE BETWEEN THE BRAKE LINE AND THE BRAKE HOSE STRUT MOUNT. THE OUTER RUBBER BRAKE HOSE COATING LOOKS TO HAVE DRY ROTTED AND THE INNER LINE THEN BROKE SOMETIME LATER. THE HOSE LOOKS TO HAVE SEVERAL OTHER SPOTS THAT ALSO LOOK ROTTED. I REPLACED FRONT BRAKE LINE AND WAS BLEEDING THE BRAKE LINES WHEN I FOUND THE DRIVERS SIDE LOOKED LIKE IT WAS READY TO BEARST AT ANY TIME INCLUDING SEVERAL ROTTED SPOTS AT THE UPPER PART OF THE HOSE. I REPLACED BOTH FRONT BRAKE LINES IN THE FRONT. TWO DAYS AFTER BUYING THE BRAKE LINES, I RETURNED TO THE AUTO PARTS STORE TO PURCHASE PARTS FOR ANOTHER TRUCK WHEN THE SALESPERSON TOLD ME THE NEXT DAY AFTER I BOUGHT THE BRAKE LINES THAT ANOTHER PERSON HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH HIS ESCAPE. THE SALESMAN WAS NOT SURE OF THE YEAR THAT FORD ESCAPE WAS. I SAVED THE BRAKE LINES FOR FURTHER INSPECTION/INVESTIGATION AS TO THE REASON THEY FAILED. HE TOLD US THAT FORD KNOWS OF THIS PROBLEM AND THAT THEY HAVE INSTALLED TWO NEW PROCESSES ON THE PRODUCT LINE TO FIX IT. HE SHOWED THE PICTURE TO THE ESCAPE ENGINEERS AND THEY AGREED THAT IT IS A DESIGN FAULT AND FORD IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE UNSAFE STATE THAT IT'S IN. UNFORTUNATELY NONE OF THEM WILL PUT IT IN WRITING, IN FEAR OF LOSING THEIR JOBS. WE ALSO WROTE AN EMAIL TO THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRANSPORTATION SAFETY DEPARTMENT IN WASHINGTON DC AND STILL HAVE NOT HEARD ANYTHING FROM THEM. WE GOT QUOTES FROM DIFFERENT BODY SHOPS IN THE AREA, BOTH AT $1200.00. AND THEY HAVE REPAIRED OTHER FORD ESCAPES WITH THE SAME DEFECT. THE REPAIR HAS TO BE DONE FROM THE INSIDE TO REPLACE THE FENDER WELL. THUS ALL THE INTERIOR TRIM HAS TO BE REMOVED AND WELDING BLANKET USED SO THEY DON'T BURN YOUR VEHICLE UP. 2005 ESCAPE WITH A RUSTED OUT RIGHT REAR FENDER WELL AND SHOCK MOUNT. I CHECKED WITH ATCHINSON FORD ABOUT ANY RECALLS, NONE. I CALLED A COUPLE BODYSHOPS IN THE AREA. THEY KNOW OF THIS PROBLEM AND COULD QUOTE ME THE TWO PARTS NEEDED, ALONG WITH THE 15 HOURS TO REPLACE/REPAIR IT. THEY SAID THAT THEY FIXED 2004, 2005, & 2006 MODELS WITH THIS PROBLEM. TODAY I WENT OUT INTO OUR WORK PARKING LOT AND LOOKED AT OUR Q.C. MANAGER'S 2005 ESCAPE. AND WE FOUND THE SAME THING HAPPENING TO HIS. IF I COULD ATTACH PICTURES I WOULD. MY ESCAPE IS 7 YEARS OLD AND HAS 115,000 MILES, HOWEVER I DON'T THINK THAT THE BODY STRUCTURE SHOULD CORRODE AWAY, LEAVING THE TOP SHOCK MOUNT READY TO BREAK FREE MAKING THE VEHICLE UNSAFE TO DRIVE. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 FORD ESCAPE. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING 50 MPH WHEN THE ENGINE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A PRIVATE MECHANIC FOR A DIAGNOSTIC TEST. THE MECHANIC STATED THAT THE SPARK PLUGS WERE INSTALLED INCORRECTLY AND AFFECTED THE ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 127,000.
THE BRAKES FAILED WHILE ATTEMPTING TO STOP AT A STOP SIGN. THE CAR WENT THROUGH THE STOP SIGN. A FEW MINUTES LATER WHILE DRIVING, THE ABS AND SERVICE BRAKES LIGHT CAME ON. I DROVE THE VEHICLE DIRECTLY TO THE DEALER. THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO LOOK AT IT UNTIL TWO DAYS LATER. I WAS TOLD THE BRAKE HOSES NEEDED REPLACING. I REPLACED THEM. THE BRAKES SEEMED TO BE WORKING. A FEW DAYS LATER, I GOT THE SERVICE BRAKES WARNING, AS WELL AS THE SERVICE 4X4 WARNING IN THE INFO SCREEN. THE BRAKES SEEMED TO BE WORKING. THIS TIME THEY REPLACED THE WHEEL SENSOR AT THE DEALER. ABOUT A WEEK LATER, I NOTICED THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS HARD WHEN INITIALLY PRESSED AND SOFTENED WHEN THE CAR WAS TURNED ON. I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD ABOUT 35 MPH WHEN THE SERVICE BREAKS AND ABS WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON AND THE BRAKES ONLY WORKED IF I PRESSED REALLY HARD TO THE FLOOR AND THEN IT WAS JERKY. I DROVE A SHORT DISTANCE TO RETURN FROM WHERE I STARTED AND TURNED OFF THE CAR. WHEN I TURNED IT ON AGAIN A FEW MINUTES LATER, THE WARNING LIGHTS WERE OFF AND I HAD BRAKING POWER AGAIN. I DROVE A FEW MILES TO THE DEALER AND WHEN I PULLED INTO THE PARKING LOT TO PARK, THE BRAKES FAILED AGAIN AND WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON. THIS WAS A SUNDAY. THEY LOOKED AT THE VEHICLE ON MONDAY AND NOTICED THE HARD BRAKE PEDAL, BUT HE LIGHTS WERE NOT ON. THEY LOOKED AT THE COMPUTER SERVICE CODES AND INFORMED ME I NEEDED TO REPLACE THE HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT/ABS MODULE AND POSSIBLE THE MASTER CYLINDER AT A PRICE TAG OF $4300 - $5500+. THE PROBLEM SEEMS TO BE INTERMITTENT, BUT THE VEHICLE IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE. I KNOW I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE WITH A 2005 HYBRID THAT HAS EXPERIENCED THIS MAJOR SAFETY PROBLEM. *TR CONSUMER DOES NOT OWN THE VEHICLE ANYMORE. IT WAS ABOUT 5 YEARS AGO SHE HAD A BRAKE FAILURE.
