THE CAR STOPPED MOVING AT THE POSTED SPEED. THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER DISINTEGRATED, AND BLOCKED THE AIRFLOW. THE WARRANTY EXPIRED 4 MONTHS EARLIER. FORD DID NOT SEEM INTERESTED IN EITHER THE ISSUE OR/ HELPING RESOLVE IT. SHOULD THERE BE A RECALL? *TR
SON WAS DRIVING VEHICLE WHEN GAS PEDAL STUCK AND WOULD NOT GO DOWN--HE PUSHED PEDAL DOWN WITH ALL HIS STRENGTH BUT IT WOULD NOT MOVE. *TR
THE PASSENGER-SIDE REAR WHEEL WELL HAS COMPLETELY RUSTED THROUGH TO THE POINT WHERE YOU CAN SEE INTO THE CABIN, AND THE SHOCK/STRUT IS MOUNTED TO NOTHING AND IS POKING INTO MY TRUNK. THE METAL ALL AROUND THE MOUNT (OR WHERE IT SHOULD BE MOUNTED) IS COMPLETELY CORRODED AND RUSTED TO THE POINT OF BEING COMPLETELY DETACHED, AND THE SURROUNDING METAL IS STAMPED SO THIN TO BEGIN WITH THAT IT IS PLIABLE. THE SHOCK IS COMPLETELY INEFFECTIVE, AND MY CAR IS A TICKING TIME BOMB OF SAFETY ISSUES. I HAVE CONTACTEDFORD SEVERAL TIMES, AND FORD CANADA IS DENYING THAT THIS IS A SAFETY OR QUALITY ISSUE AND HAVE TAKEN NO RESPONSIBILITY; THEY REFUSE TO FIX MY CAR. I CANNOT FIND A RECALL AT PRESENT, HOWEVER THERE ARE NUMEROUS PEOPLE REPORTING THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THEIR ESCAPES, 6 ALONE ON [XXX] AND 5 ON [XXX]. RIGHT REAR SHOCK ABSORBER MOUNT IS RUSTING PREMATURELY MAKING THE VEHICLE UNSAFE TO DRIVE. *TR
STARTED HEARING LOUD RATTLING SOUNDS FROM REAR OF CAR , LOOKED AND SAW PASSENGER REAR WHEEL WELL/SHOCK MOUNT RUSTED OUT AND SEPARATED FROM REST OF VEHICLE. *TR
ON 10/18/12 I WAS INVOLVED IN A MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENT WITH MY 2005 FORD ESCAPE. MY VEHICLE SLAMMED INTO AN EMBANKMENT, CRUSHING THE DRIVERS SIDE OF THE VEHICLE, AND THERE WAS A LARGE CRACK NEAR THE LUGGAGE RACK EXTENDING THE LENGTH OF THE VEHICLE ON THE DRIVERS SIDE AT SOME POINTS I COULD VISUALLY SEE INTO THE CRACK AND INTO THE VEHICLE INTERIOR. DRIVERS SIDE OF VEHICLE HIT HEAD ON INTO TREE AT 55MPH, BUT AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. BOTH HEADLIGHTS POPPED OUT, HOOD CRINKLED, AND THERE WAS EXTENSIVE FRONT END DAMAGE. REAR WINDOW ON DRIVERS SIDE BROKEN. VEHICLE WAS TOTALED. *TR
I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM WORK AND THE CAR STALLS OUT OF NOWHERE. THEN THE CHECK ENGINE, OIL, AND ABS WARNING LIGHTS ALL LIT UP. AFTER ABOUT 20 MIN I TRIED STARTING UP THE CAR AGAIN AND IT STARTED UP AND SLOWLY MADE IT HOME. THE FOLLOWING DAY IT HAPPEN AGAIN! LUCKILY NO ONE WAS BEHIND ME, OTHERWISE I WOULD HAVE BEEN REAR ENDED. IMMEDIATELY LOOKED ONLINE DESCRIBING THE ISSUE TO SEE IF I COULD FIND OUT WHAT COULD BE CAUSING THIS, AND COME TO FIND OUT AN OVERWHELMING AMOUNT OF PEOPLE HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME THING! THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD AND HAD I BEEN ON A MAJOR HIGHWAY THE RESULT COULD HAVE DRASTICALLY DIFFERENT. IT IS APPALLING THAT THIS HAS BEEN A KNOW ISSUE AND FORD HAS DONE NOTHING TO REMEDY THE SAFETY OF IT'S CUSTOMERS. *TR
MY DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING OUR 2005 FORD ESCAPE ON THE HIGHWAY AT 55 MPH WHEN IT COMPLETELY CUT OFF ON HER. LUCKILY SHE WAS ABLE TO GET TO THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY WITHOUT INCIDENT. SHE GOT THE CAR BACK ON AND MADE IT HOME, HOWEVER, IT WAS JERKING AND MISFIRING ALL THE WAY HOME. WE TOOK IT TO A MECHANIC WHO SAID IT NEEDED SPARK PLUGS AND 2 COILS TO THE TUNE OF $700.00. WHEN WE WENT TO PICK IT UP WE WERE TOLD THAT THE COMPUTER WAS SHOT AND THAT WE HAD TO TAKE IT TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP. THE FORD PLACE IS REPLACING ALL 6 COILS AND THE COMPUTER FOR $2300.00. APPARENTLY THERE IS A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH FORD INSTALLING THE WRONG SPARK PLUGS IN THESE MODELS AT THE FACTORY CAUSING THE COILS AND THE COMPUTER TO GO OUT. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY FORD HAS NOT RECALLED THIS PROBLEM. GOING DOWN A HIGHWAY AT 55 MPH AND YOU CAR CUTS OFF IS A SAFETY ISSUE IN MY EYES!! *TR
I WAS TRYING DOWN THE HIGHWAY DOING ABOUT 55 MPH ALL THE LIGHTS CAME ON THE CAR, I WAS ABLE TO GET TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. I STOPPED THE CAR FOR ABOUT 5 MINUTES WAS ABLE TO RESTART AND DRIVE ANOTHER 1/2 MILE AND IT HAPPENED AGAIN. GOT THE CAR TOWED TO A MECHANIC, WHO PLACED ENGINE ON CODE MACHINE AND STATES MY ENGINE COILS WERE BAD. REPLACED ALL OF MY ENGINE COILS AND THE CAR IS STILL RIDING LIKE A DUMP TRUNK. TOOK DO A FORD DEALERSHIP WHO CHARGED ME 160.00 TO PUT ON MACHINE AND TOLD ME IT WAS MY ENGINE COILS, I HAVE REPLACED ALL THE COILS. I AM JUST AT MY WITTS END. I WILL NOT EVER BUY A FORD AGAIN. AS A SIDE NOTE, I PUT A TRANSMISSION IN THIS TRUCK ABOUT 2 YEARS AGO AND THE DEALER WHO FIXED MY CAR, DIDN'T EVEN GIVE ME A RENTAL TO DRIVE. ITS A NEW AND USED CAR DEALERSHIP AND THEY COULDN'T EVEN GIVE ME ONE OF THEIR CARS TO DRIVE. ARE YOU SERIOUS? *TR
DRIVING AT 55 MPH AND CAR BEGAN TO LURCH AND BUCK. CAR SHUT OFF 3 TIMES IN BUSY INTERSECTION WITH NO WARNING AND ALMOST CAUSED AN ACCIDENT. TOOK TO MECHANIC, AND LEARNED THAT THE COMPUTER SYSTEM HAD SHORTED OUT DUE TO MANUFACTURERS USING INCORRECT SPARK PLUGS. APPARENTLY, THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE WITH THIS YEAR AND MAKE. THIS IS A DANGEROUS PROBLEM, AND CAN OCCUR ANYWHERE, DOING ANY SPEED! THE COMPUTER SYSTEM MUST BE REPLACED AND IT IS VERY EXPENSIVE. *TR
HI- I HAVE A 2005 FORD ESCAPE. I BOUGHT IT USED. JUST RECENTLY I STARTED TO HEAR A BANGING IN THE BACK REAR OF THE CAB PART OF THE CAR. I FOUND OUT THE SHOCK MOUNTS ARE RUSTED OUT, AND I FEEL LIKE THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE DUE TO THE FACT THAT THE CAR COULD FALL APART WHILE DRIVING OR CATCH FIRE. THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL IS VERY DIFFICULT TO PRESS AND SOMETIMES CANNOT BE PRESSED DOWN AT ALL. *TR
[XXX] 2005 FORD ESCAPE XLS, FWD HAD ISSUE WITH THROTTLE BODY. IT GOT TO THE POINT WHERE I WOULD HAVE TO STOP THE GAS PEDAL JUST TO MAKE IT ACCELERATE FROM A STOPPED STATE. THIS FIRST HAPPENED BACK IN NOVEMBER OF 2011, AND NOW I CAN FEEL IT START TO GET TO THAT POINT AGAIN... I WAS ABLE TO CLEAN IT LAST YEAR WITH B-12 CHEMTOOL WHICH TOOK CARE OF IT RIGHT AWAY. IT WAS COMPLETELY GUNKED BUT WORKED LIKE NEW ONCE I HAD IT CLEANED. GUESS IT IS TIME TO DO THIS AGAIN... DRIVING AT ANY SPEED, VEHICLE WILL SUDDENLY LOOSE ENGINE POWER AND ENGINE WILL STUTTER OR SHAKE AS SOMEONE PULLED OUT ONE SPARK PLUG AND VEHICLE IS TRYING TO COMPENSATE. ENGINE LIGHT WILL FLASH DURING THIS TIME APROX 40 SECONDS AND THEN ENGINE WILL CATCH AND RESUME NORMAL DRIVING. DOES NOT MATTER IF ENGINE IS HOT OR COLD, SHORT OR LONG DISTANCE THIS WILL HAPPEN RANDOMLY WITH OUT WARNING. AC OFF HEAT OFF AC ON HEAT ON DOES NOT MATTER. WE ARE NOW TRYING TO GOOGLE THE PROBLEM AND SEE WHAT OTHERS HAVE DONE WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. FORD HAS BEEN NO HELP AFTER READING THE CODES THEY TRY TO FIX WHAT MY PERSONAL MECHANIC HAS ALREADY REPLACED. CODES ALWAYS READ THE SAME THING COILS, FUEL INJECTION ALL HAVE ALREADY BEEN REPLACED AND PROBLEM PERSISTS. HAS BEEN IN TO REPAIR NUMEROUS TIMES AND SPENT 1,000'S OF DOLLARS ON VEHICLE. *TR

SEVERE RUST...HAD TO HAVE THE UNDERCARRIAGE COMPLETELY MODIFIED. SHORTLY AFTER THAT THE BRAKE LINES RUSTED OUT AND HAD TO HAVE THEM REPLACED. NOW I HAVE AN ISSUE WITH BRAKES AGAIN (2 MONTHS LATER). I SAW THE RECALL UP TO 2004 FOR RUST ISSUES BUT MY CAR IS SEVERELY RUSTED AND A 2005. *TR
IT WAS TWO DAYS AFTER I GOT THE CAR, I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM MANASSAS TO FAIRFAX, ALL OF A SUDDEN THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON THE TRUCK STARTED TO SPUTTER AND I LOST ACCELERATION IN MY TRUCK. I WAS ON 495 AT NIGHT AND THE DASH BOARD STATED THAT THE CAR WOULD SHUT DOWN SO THAT THE ENGINE WOULD NOT OVER HEAT. I HAD TO CALL A TOW TRUCK TO PEP BOYS IN ANNANDALE, VA AND THEY FIXED THE PROBLEM. BUT, I STILL HAVE ACCELERATION PROBLEMS AFTER IT WAS FIXED. I WILL TAKE IT BACK TO PEPBOYS TO FIND OUT IF IT IS THE SAME PROBLEM. *TR
WHILE DRIVING, THE GAS PEDAL STICKS. IT FEELS LIKE THERE IS A BRICK UNDER THE GAS PEDAL AND IT WON'T BUDGE. I MASH DOWN ON THE PEDAL AND EVEN STOMP IT. IT WILL DEPRESS AFTER SEVERAL MINUTES OR WHEN IT FEELS LIKE IT. THIS SEEMS TO BE HAPPENING MORE AS THE WEATHER GETS COLDER. WHEN I RESEARCHED THIS ONLINE, I FOUND RECALLS FOR THE 2000 - 2004 FORD ESCAPES EXPERIENCING THIS ISSUE SPEED CONTROL CABLES), BUT NOTHING FOR MY VEHICLE. I HAVE ALSO FOUND, THROUGH A SIMPLE INTERNET SEARCH, THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH FORD ESCAPE OWNERS, BUT FORD HAS NOT DONE ANYTHING ABOUT IT. *TR
WE HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE TRANSMISSION FROM 14000 MILES, WE REPORTED TO DEALER AND THEY NEVER NOTED IT IN THERE COMPUTER.. WE COMPLAINED 6 TIMES WITH IT ONLY GOT PUT IN THE COMPUTER AT THE DEALER TWICE.. FINALLY AFTER IT RAN OUT OF WARRANTY, IT ALMOST KILLED OUR WHOLE FAMILY.. THE TRANY WHEN WE CAME UP TO A STOP SIGN COMING OFF THE FREEWAY STAYED INGAGED AND THROUGH US IN TO A BUNCH OF TRAFFIC, ALMOST CAUSING A HE'LL OF A ACCIDENT.. WE'LL IT ENDED UP RUINING THE TRANSMISSION CAUSE THE TORQUE CONVERTER LOCKED UP AND CAUSED IT NOT TO DISENGAGE.. I ENDED UP SPENDING 3500.00 AND HAD THE DEALER PUT A OWN REBUILT IN. LATER I FOUND OUT FORD HAD 4 UPDATED TORQUE CONVERTERS.. WHY WAS THERE NOT A RECALL WHEN IT ALMOST KILLS PEOPLE.. I AM VERY FRUSTRATED WITH EVERYTHING THAT HAS WENT ON WITH THIS VEHICLE.. I AM WILL TO JOIN ANY KIND OF LAWSUIT OVER GETTING THE GOVERNMENT TO TAKE MORE AVASIVE MOVE TO HELP AND PROTECT THE CONSUMER, INSTEAD OF HELPING THESE BIG COMPANIES BEND PEOPLE OVER.. WE PAY A LOT OF MONEY FOR THESE VEHICLES, AND WE GET TREATED LIKE DIRT..
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 FORD ESCAPE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THERE WAS AN OIL LEAK FROM THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE HIGH POWER STEERING HOSE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE CONTACT WAS UNABLE TO HAVE THE VEHICLE REPAIRED BECAUSE THE PARTS NEEDED TO COMPLETE THE REPAIR WERE NOT AVAILABLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 90,000.
I BOUGHT THIS 2005 FORD ESCAPE HYBRID FROM DRIVER'S WORLD IN VIRGINIA BEACH, VA, AND FOUND SERIOUS PROBLEMS WITH THE BRAKES THE MINUTE I DROVE OFF THE LOT. IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE FIRST STOP SIGN LEAVING THE USED CAR DEALERSHIP, I GENTLY PRESSED THE BRAKES TO SLOW DOWN AND FELT AS THOUGH THE ABS WAS LOCKING UP PREVENTING ME FROM EVEN SLOWING DOWN. WHEN I LET OFF OF THE BRAKES AND PRESSED THEM AGAIN, I WAS ABLE TO BRAKE JUST FINE. I FIGURED IT MAY HAVE BEEN A FLUKE, SO I CONTINUED DRIVING FOR 2 HOURS FROM VIRGINIA BEACH TO MIDLOTHIAN. I STOPPED AT A STOP LIGHT IN MIDLOTHIAN WHEN THE BRAKE LIGHT AND THE ABS LIGHT BOTH CAME ON AT THE SAME TIME, AND THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO ROLL. I PRESSED THE BRAKES AS HARD AS I COULD AND THE VEHICLE STOPPED ROLLING. I CONTINUED TO DRIVE FOR 2 MILES IN THIS CONDITION OF HAVING TO PRESS THE BRAKES EXTREMELY HARD TO GET THE VEHICLE TO SLOW DOWN. WHEN I ARRIVED AT MY DESTINATION, I TURNED THE CAR OFF AND BACK ON, AND THE PROBLEM HAD GONE AWAY. I TOOK THE CAR BACK TO DRIVER'S WORLD 36 HOURS LATER. DRIVER'S WORLD KEPT THE VEHICLE FOR TWO AND A HALF WEEKS AND CLAIMED THAT THEY WERE UNABLE TO REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM. THEREFORE, EVEN THOUGH THE VEHICLE IS UNDER THEIR 30DAY/1000MILE WARRANTY THEY WILL NOT MAKE ANY REPAIRS OR GIVE A REFUND. I PICKED THE VEHICLE UP FROM DRIVER'S WORLD, AND AT THE FIRST STOP LIGHT I CAME TO THE BRAKE LIGHT CAME ON. I TOOK IT BACK TO DRIVER'S WORLD, AND THEY WERE ABLE TO FIND ERROR CODES C1471 AND C1472, BUT THEY DID NOT KNOW WHAT THEY MEANT SO THEY TOLD ME TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO FORD'S SERVICE DEPARTMENT. ON THE WAY TO FORD'S SERVICE DEPARTMENT THERE WAS ONE OCCASION WHEN I PRESSED THE BRAKES AND FELT AGAIN THAT THE ABS WAS LOCKING UP PREVENTING ME FROM EVEN SLOWING DOWN. I LET OFF OF THE BRAKE AND PRESSED IT AGAIN, AND I STOPPED JUST FINE. AT THIS TIME FORD STILL HAS THE VEHICLE AND IS ATTEMPTING TO REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM. *TR
WAS DRIVING AND HEARD INCREASING NOISE AND CLUNKING FROM BACK OF VEHICLE. WHEN HOME, PULLED THE RIGHT REAR INSIDE PANEL IN THE HATCH AREA. FOUND RUST PERFORMATION SURROUNDING THE RIGHT REAR SHOCK MOUNT. THIS RUST WAS EXTENSIVE ON THIS ONE ENTIRE PANEL BUT PERFORATED SURROUNDING THE SHOCK MOUNT AREA. I COULD SEE TO THE OUTSIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE SURROUNDING PANELS APPEARED UNAFFECTED. THE CAR WAS TAKEN TO AL PIEMONTE FORD IN ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL. THE RIGHT REAR WHEELHOUSE PANEL HAD TO BE REPLACED AT A TOTAL COST OF $927.97. THIS IS A SIGNIFICANT STRUCTURAL FAILURE FOR A VEHICLE OF THIS AGE. I WAS GLAD I WAS NOT ON HIGHWAY WHEN IT FAILED. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A PRIVATE MECHANIC WHO CONFIRMED THAT THE COILS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 92,000.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION AND THEY STATED THAT THE POWER TRAIN CONTROL MODULE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND THEY STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT UNDER WARRANTY. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 100,000.

THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND ADVISED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 12V353000 (VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL:CABLES). THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 100,000.
9/10/12, WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND MY CAR STARTED RUNNING VERY HARD AND STARTED SHAKING AND I COULD FEEL THE CAR LOOSING POWER. I TURNED THE STEERING WHEEL TOWARDS THE RIGHT TO PULL OVER AND AS I PRESSED THE GAS PEDAL I COULD FEEL THE CAR HAD SHUT OFF. I WAS ABLE TO PULL OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY AND MY CAR SMELL LIKE SOMETHING WAS BURNING. AFTER SITTING FOR ABOUT 15MINS THE CAR STARTED AND I WAS ABLE TO START THE CAR AND DROVE IT AT ABOUT 40 MPH UNTIL GETTING OFF THE EXIT TO GO HOME WHICH WAS ABOUT 10 MORE MILES. I HAD TO CONTINUOUSLY PRESS THE GAS MAKING THE CAR ACCELERATE BETWEEN 30 TO 40MPH BECAUSE THE CAR STARTED TO REPEAT THE SAME THING AS I STATED EARLIER. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE SHOP 9/13/12 (MY CAR HAD 153224 MILES) AND WAS TOLD THERE WAS MISFIRE ON #2 COIL, SO I PAID TO HAVE THE COIL CHANGED. 2/15/13 MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME BACK ON AND THE CAR WAS REPEATEDLY HESITATING, I TOOK IT THE SHOP 2/19/13 (MY CAR HAD 163071 MILES) AND HAD THE SAME MISFIRE CODE, SO I PAID TO HAVE ALL THREE REAR COILS CHANGED, THE OWNER SHOWED ME THE OLD COILS & THE #2 COIL LOOK BURNED AND BURST OPEN FROM THE TOP. THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME BACK ON WITH THE SAME CODE AND I PAID TO CHANGED IT AGAIN 7/12/13 (MY CAR HAD 173095 MILES) AFTER I DROVE THE CAR ABOUT 50 MILES THE LIGHT CAME BACK ON. I HAD THE CODE READ AGAIN ON 7/30/13 (MY CAR HAD 173920 MILES) AND IT GAVE THE SAME CODE FOR A MISFIRE ON COIL #2. THE OWNER OF THE SHOP ADVISED ME TO TAKE THE CAR TO THE DEALER AND EXPLAIN THE PROBLEM AND CHECK IF THERE HAS BEEN A RECALL ON THE 2005 MODEL. I CALLED THE FORD DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD I WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR THEM TO DO ANOTHER DIAGNOSTIC QUOTED AT $140. *TR

TOWED CAR TO SHOP AND HAD BRAKES REPLACED (@ 5%, SO THOUGHT THIS WAS THE "ONLY" PROBLEM). 2 WEEKS LATER, I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. REPAIR SHOP DID MORE DIAGNOSTICS AND RESEARCH, AND DISCOVERED THE MASTER BRAKE CYLINDER / HCU ISSUE THAT IS FREQUENTLY REPORTED ON-LINE. *TR

HOWEVER, I HAD BEEN COMPLAINING TO MY HUSBAND RECENTLY THAT THE BRAKES DIDN'T SEEM TO WORK RIGHT. I HIT ICE AND THE ABS DIDN'T ENGAGE ..NO LIGHT EITHER..BUT THE GRINDING SOUND ONCE IN AWHILE WAS STILL THERE. SO WE TOOK IT IN AND PUT IT ON THE COMPUTER TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM. CAME BACK WITH 2 CODES U2023 AND C1234. WHICH MEANS THE RIGHT FRONT TONE RING IS BAD. AFTER SEARCHING THE INTERNET, I FOUND THIS TO BE A VERY COMMON PROBLEM. ALSO GOT UNDER THE TRUCK AND SURE ENOUGH THE TONE RING IS CRACKED AND SPINNING AROUND LOOSELY. THE SAFETY ISSUE HERE IS THE ABS WILL LOCK UP RANDOMLY ON DRY CEMENT WHEN YOU START TO APPLY YOUR BRAKES. WHICH THEN YOU CAN'T COMPLETELY CONTROL YOUR VEHICLES DIRECTION AND IF YOU TAKE YOUR FOOT OFF THE BREAK TO CONTROL YOUR VEHICLE, THEN YOU MAY HIT SOMEONE OR SOMETHING. ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS, I WAS GETTING READY TO STOP AND NOTICED THAT THE BRAKE PAD "STUCK." THE PAD WOULDN'T DEPRESS AND I WAS UNABLE TO STOP. AFTER ADDITIONAL EFFORT, I WAS ABLE TO GET THE VEHICLE TO SLOW DOWN AND STOP, BUT I WAS ALREADY AT A REDUCED SPEED SINCE I WAS COMING TO A STOP. I THOUGHT MY CAR MAT HAD JAMMED MY BRAKES, SO I THOUGHT NOTHING OF IT UNTIL IT HAPPENED AGAIN. I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO THE FORD DEALER WHERE I MADE THE PURCHASE. THEY KEPT MY VEHICLE FOR A WEEK TO "REPRODUCE" THE PROBLEM, WHICH THEY DID. I WAS THEN TOLD THAT THE PARTS ALONE WOULD COST $3,000, BUT THAT THE ENGINEERS AT FORD CORPORATE SUGGESTED THAT THE MECHANICS PERFORM AN ELECTRO-MECHANICAL BRAKE BLEED, WHICH SEEMED TO FIX THE PROBLEM, BUT IT DID NOT. THREE WEEKS LATER, THE BRAKES FAILED AGAIN. THIS TIME THE DEALERSHIP KEPT MY VEHICLE FOR TWO WEEKS, BUT WERE UNABLE TO REPRODUCE THE FAILURE. I WAS TOLD THAT THE ONLY WAY TO FIX THE PROBLEM WAS TO COMPLETELY REPLACE THE BRAKING SYSTEM. I ACTUALLY CALLED FORD HQ ABOUT THIS ISSUE. THE PERSON WITH WHOM I SPOKE OFFERED NO REAL RESOLUTION, AND SHE SEEMED UNAWARE OF THINGS. FORD IS VERY AWARE OF THE PROBLEMS WITH THE HYBRID BRAKING SYSTEM. THIS IS A DANGEROUS SITUATION THAT IS A DESIGN FLAW--NOT A MECHANICAL FAILURE COVERED BY A WARRANTY. THERE IS A DIFFERENCE, AND FORD NEEDS TO BE HELD RESPONSIBLE. HYBRIDS ARE VERY EXPENSIVE, AND THEREFORE THE MANUFACTURERS OF THESE VEHICLES SHOULD BE FORCED TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR DESIGN FLAWS THAT ARE AS DANGEROUS AS BRAKE FAILURE. SERVICE REP AND I LOOKED AT THE DEPRESSION MADE IN THE PLASTIC HOUSING TO THE STEERING COLUMN, WHERE PEDAL HARDWARE HAD INDENTED IT. SERVICE SAID ENGINE APPEARED TO BE OPERATING OK; HE TESTED IT BY REVVING THE ENGINE IN THE GARAGE. HE REMARKED THE VISIBLE SYMPTOM WAS THE PEDAL BEING SO LOW THERE'S NO ROOM FOR TRAVEL. I CONTINUED ON 150 MILES BACK HOME AND CALLED FORD TO LOOK AT THE "SPEED CONTROL MALFUNCTION" ISSUE. VEHICLE APPEARS TO ACCELERATE OK WITH CRUISE CONTROL; THE PEDAL IS SITTING SO LOW THERE'S NO TRAVEL TO ACCELERATE. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUSLY DANGEROUS - MERGING IN METRO TRAFFIC IS NO GAME. *TR
DRIVING MY FORD ESCAPE 2005, 35MPH, HEARD A THUMP/BANG THEN VERY LOUD RATTLING FROM THE BACK OF THE VEHICLE. ARRIVED HOME, FOUND THAT THE RIGHT REAR SHOCK, SHOCK MOUNT, AND A DINNER-PLATE-SIZED CHUNK OF WHEEL WELL HAD PUNCHED UP INTO THE BACK OF THE VEHICLE. OPENED THE LIFTGATE, SAW THE SHOCK MOUNT FLOPPING AROUND INSIDE THE CAR AND A DANGLING CLUSTER OF WIRES THAT HAD BEEN SHREDDED BY THE JAGGED METAL. ENTIRE RIGHT SIDE OF THE REAR COMPARTMENT HAD BEEN SHOVED UP 10CM. HUSBAND WAS SHOCKED, SURE I MUST HAVE HIT SOMETHING, BUT I HAD NOT. RIGHT REAR WHEEL WELL HAD COMPLETELY RUSTED OUT UNDERNEATH THE UNDERCOATING. COULD NOT SEE THE RUST FROM THE OUTSIDE, SO DID NOT KNOW IT WAS HAPPENING. CHECKED LEFT REAR WHEEL WELL, SAW NO RUST, BUT UNDERCOATING LIFTS RIGHT OFF TO REVEAL TERRIBLE RUST UNDERNEATH AS WELL. VEHICLE IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE, NO SHOCK, WATER AND ROAD DEBRIS WOULD FLY RIGHT UP INTO THE CAR THROUGH THE HUGE HOLE. THIS KIND OF DAMAGE IS INCREDIBLE. ESTIMATE FOR REPAIR FROM DEALERSHIP (BRONDES FORD, TOLEDO) WAS $5752.34. CERTAINLY CAN NOT AFFORD THAT. RESEARCHED ONLINE FOR REPAIR ALTERNATIVES AND FOUND DOZENS OF OTHER PEOPLE WITH THE SAME TYPE OF DAMAGE TO THE SAME VEHICLE MAKE AND MODEL. REPORTED THE DAMAGE TO FORD CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIP HOTLINE, WAS INFORMED THAT NO RECALL HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR THIS VEHICLE, AND THAT THEY WERE UNAWARE THAT THIS WAS A COMMON, FREQUENT, OR WIDESPREAD PROBLEM. AFTER THEY FIXED THAT, I LEARNED THAT I ALSO HAD TO HAVE THE COMPUTER REPLACED BECAUSE THE ENGINE COILS AND PLUGS CAUSED A PROBLEM WITH THE COMPUTER. I DECIDED TO SEARCH THE INTERNET TO SEE IF ANYONE ELSE WAS HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM. I FOUND MANY WEBSITES AND FORUMS EXPLAINING THE VERY SAME PROBLEM OCCURRING IN OTHER 2005 FORD ESCAPES. IT SEEMS THAT IF THIS MANY PEOPLE ARE HAVING THE SAME EXACT PROBLEM (ENOUGH FOR FORD TO PUT OUT A BULLETIN EXPLAINING HOW TO FIX IT), THEN FORD SHOULD TAKE STEPS TO RECTIFY THE SITUATION. FROM THE INFORMATION I HAVE FOUND, THERE IS A MANUFACTURING DEFECT THAT DOES NOT SHOW UP UNTIL WELL AFTER THE WARRANTY IS NO LONGER GOOD. THIS IS A PROBLEM THAT IS OCCURRING TO MANY PEOPLE WHO HAVE THE EXACT SAME CAR AND FORD SHOULD DO MORE THAN EXPLAIN HOW TO FIX IT. A RECALL IS NECESSARY BECAUSE THE PROBLEM IS THE CAUSED BY FAULTY MANUFACTURING. *TR
WHILE DRIVING HOME FROM WORK, I WENT TO ACCELERATE. UPON REACHING 40. I HEARD A SUBSTANTIAL BACKFIRE NOISE, AND THE ENGINE SHUT OFF IN THE MIDDLE OF A BUSY ROAD CAUSING ME TO BLOCK TRAFFIC AS I COASTED ALMOST INTO A BUSY INTERSECTION. I WAS ABLE TO PUT IT IN NEUTRAL AND RESTART THE ENGINE AFTER COASTING FOR 100+ FEET. AFTER WHICH, THE ENGINE BEGAN RUNNING VERY ROUGH AND RUGGED NEVER BEING ABLE TO ACCELERATE ABOUT 30 MPH AND CAUSING MAJOR TRAFFIC PROBLEMS. I TOOK IT TO A DEALERSHIP (VARSITY FORD IN ANN ARBOR, MI) AND HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT MY 2005 FORD ESCAPE WAS IN TROUBLE. APPARENTLY, MY SPARK PLUG AFTER BEING CLOGGED, CAUSED A BACKFIRE WHICH BLEW MY IGNITION COILS AND SPARKPLUGS AND MY PCM. I AM BEING QUOTED $2,200. AT MY LAST OIL CHANGE (3 MONTHS AGO) VARSITY FORD TOLD ME I WAS GETTING CLOSE TO NEEDING A TUNE UP BUT IT WAS NOT NECESSARY THAT DAY AND THAT I COULD WAIT UNTIL MY NEXT OIL CHANGE. I WAS PLANNING ON GOING THIS WEEKEND BECAUSE I WAS HEADING OUT OF TOWN. HAD I BEEN TOLD THE RISK WAS A $400 TUNE UP VS. A $2,200 BLOWN ENGINE, MAYBE I WOULD HAVE CHANGED THE SPARK PLUGS. I'M VERY DISTRAUGHT AT THE FORD DEALERSHIP, AND NOW AM QUESTIONING WHETHER I WILL EVER BUY A FORD OR WORK WITH A FORD DEALERSHIP. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 FORD ESCAPE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 60 MPH, SHE HEARD A GRINDING NOISE COMING FROM THE WHEELS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC AND THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE FRONT DRIVER'S WHEEL BEARING NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS IN THE PROCESS OF BEING REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 30,167.
I WAS DRIVING ON A ROAD WHERE THE SPEED LIMIT WAS ABOUT 45 MPH AND I WAS GOING ABOUT 30 MPH WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN A RED LIGHT CAME ON WITH THE ABS WARNING MESSAGE ON IT AND THE CAR TURNED OFF. I TRIED TO HIT THE BRAKES BUT THE PEDAL WENT ALL THE WAY TO THE GROUND AND I COULD NOT STOP THE CAR. FORTUNATELY, A CAR WAS NOT IN FRONT OF ME AND I CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP AND PUT MY HAZARD BLINKERS ON. AFTER WAITING A FEW MINUTES I RESTARTED THE CAR AND IT STARTED AS NORMAL AND THE BRAKES WORKED AS NORMAL. THE NEXT DAY I TOOK THE CAR TO THE SHOP TO GET THE BRAKES CHECKED OUT AND THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE BRAKES. THANKFULLY, THE PROBLEM HAS NOT HAPPENED AGAIN. I AM VERY FORTUNATE THAT A CAR WAS NOT IN FRONT OF ME BECAUSE I WOULD HAVE SURELY HIT IT. *TR
WHILE DRIVING ON THE EXPRESSWAY, MY GAS PEDAL SNAPPED FORWARD BY ITSELF AND ACCELERATED MY CAR. THEN SNAPPED BACK AND HIT MY FOOT IN THE POSITION IT WAS ALREADY IN. THIS HAS HAPPENED BEFORE, SEVERAL TIMES OVER THE COURSE OF MY OWNERSHIP OF THIS CAR. (I BOUGHT IT NEW) I IGNORED IT THE FIRST FEW TIMES BECAUSE I THOUGHT IT WAS RELATED TO BEING ON CRUISE CONTROL, BUT THIS WAS NOT ALWAYS THE CASE. I SAW ON FOX NEWS THAT THERE IS AN ONGOING INVESTIGATION; AND CALLED FORD TO SEE IF THEY WOULD REPAIR MY CAR AND THEY SAID NO. I AM HOPING THEY WILL HAVE A RECALL, BECAUSE I PLAN ON KEEPING THIS CAR FOR AWHILE, AND DON'T WANT TO PAY FOR THE REPAIRS. THANKS. *TR
