GAS PEDAL STICKS WHEN COLD. THE GAS PEDAL WILL LOCK UP AND NOT UNLOCK. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 FORD ESCAPE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 70 MPH, THE OVER DRIVE WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED AND THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT ACCELERATE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR DIAGNOSIS. THE MECHANIC STATED THE TRANSMISSION WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 80,000. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 FORD ESCAPE. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH, A WARNING INDICATOR TO SHUT THE VEHICLE DOWN ILLUMINATED AND THE VEHICLE STALLED. THE VEHICLE WAS ABLE TO RESTART. THE FAILURE RECURRED ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER, WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE VEHICLE NEEDED TO BE REPROGRAMMED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 90,000.
I WAS DRIVING HOME AROUND 9 PM. IT WAS ABOUT 40 DEGREES OUTSIDE AND THE REAR DEFROSTER WAS ON. MY TWO KIDS WERE IN THE BACK SEAT AND MY HUSBAND WAS IN THE PASSENGER SEAT. THE REAR WINDOW OF MY 2006 FORD ESCAPE JUST SHATTERED. WE PULLED OVER TO SEE IF SOMEONE HAD THROWN SOMETHING AT THE CAR, BUT THERE WAS NOBODY AROUND EXCEPT A FATHER AND HIS YOUNG CHILDREN. HE HADN'T SEEN ANYTHING BUT SAID HE HEARD THE WINDOW BREAK AS WE DROVE BY. THERE WAS GLASS ON THE INSIDE AND OUTSIDE OF THE CAR. I AM THANKFUL THAT MY KIDS WERE NOT HURT, BUT I AM SHOCKED THAT SOMETHING LIKE THIS COULD HAPPEN. I LOOKED THIS UP ONLINE AND HAVE FOUND MANY OTHER COMPLAINTS OF THIS SAME THING HAPPENING TO OTHER PEOPLE. *TR
I WAS DRIVING ABOUT 35 MPH WHEN THE RED "BRAKE" WORD APPEARED, AND THE RED "SERVICE BRAKE SYSTEM" MESSAGE CAME ON. BRAKES SEEMED FINE, SO I CONTINUED DRIVING ABOUT 3 MILES. STOPPED AT A STORE. WHEN I CAME OUT ABOUT 30 MINUTES LATER AND STARTED THE CAR THOSE LIGHT MESSAGES DID NOT COME ON, SO I DROVE TOWARD HOME ABOUT 3 MILES AWAY. AS I WAS ABOUT 3 BLOCKS FROM HOME I DROVE OVER A RECESSED MANHOLE COVER IN THE STREET AND THE RED BRAKE WORD, THE "SERVICE BRAKE SYSTEM" MESSAGE CAME ON AGAIN WHEN I HIT THAT BUMP, AND ALSO A WHITE "ABS" WORD. THE BRAKES IMMEDIATELY FELT LIKE THEY WERE GOING OUT AS I SLOWED DOWN TO TURN A CORNER AHEAD. I DIDN'T ACCELERATE ANY MORE BECAUSE THE BRAKES FELT UNRESPONSIVE, SO I COASTED THE REST OF THE WAY THROUGH THE TURN AND TRIED TO PULL OVER AND STOP IN A SPACE WHERE THERE WERE NO PARKED CARS, BUT BRAKES WERE NOT WORKING AND I REALIZED I WASN'T GOING SLOW ENOUGH TOWARD A PARKED CAR AHEAD. I WAS ABOUT TO SWERVE BACK OUT INTO THE STREET BUT PRESSED THE BRAKE DOWN HARD ALL THE WAY AND FELT IT STOP LIKE A MANUAL BRAKE, AND I STOPPED BEFORE HITTING THE PARKED CAR. *TR
DRIVING UP TO A STOP SIGN WHEN I FELT LIKE I HAD NO BRAKE CONTROL TO STOP. I HAD TO DEPRESS THE PEDAL AS FAR AS I COULD AND PRAYED THAT I WOULD STOP BEFORE THE BUSY INTERSECTION. WHEN I CAME TO A STOP, THE SERVICE BRAKE SYSTEM CODE CAME ON AND CHIMED. THE ABS LIGHT WAS LIT, ALONG WITH BRAKE WARNING. LUCKILY WE WERE ONLY A FEW BLOCKS FROM THE HOUSE, THAT WE WERE ABLE TO CAREFULLY MAKE IT BACK HOME. AFTER TAKING THE VEHICLE IN FOR A BRAKE SYSTEM WARNING BEFORE WHERE THEY DIAGNOSED A FAULTY WIRING HARNESS AND REPLACED AT MY EXPENSE. NOW THAT WE WERE ABLE TO GET THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP THEY HAVE STATED THAT THE HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT WAS A PROBLEM AND POSSIBILITY OF THE MASTER CYLINDER. ALL THIS AT A COST OF $4500+ PARTS AND LABOR. AFTER JUST FINISHING PAYING OFF THE VEHICLE LOAN WE OWN A VEHICLE THAT DOESN'T STOP. HAD I CRASHED THE VEHICLE I'D ONLY BE OUT MY DEDUCTIBLE. THANKS FORD! I REGRET PURCHASING THIS VEHICLE AFTER HEARING OF OTHER OWNERS EXPERIENCING THE SAME ISSUE, WITH NO HELP FROM FORD ON REPAIRING A DEVICE THATS MEANT TO PROVIDE SAFETY. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 FORD ESCAPE. THE CONTACT ATTEMPTED TO SHIFT GEARS HOWEVER, THE GEAR SHIFTER FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER OR INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR INSPECTION OR DIAGNOSIS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE ISSUE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60000. *TR
I WAS DRIVING AT 55MPH ON A COUNTY ROAD. ALL OF A SUDDEN THE ENGINE STARTED TO MAKE A BANGING NOISE AND I LOST MOST POWER. I WAS ABLE TO LIMP INTO A OIL CHANGE PLACE. THEY LOOKED AT THE OIL AND IT WAS NEARLY EMPTY. I HAVE ALWAYS CHANGED THE OIL ON TIME AND DONE ALL OTHER MAINTENANCE ON THIS CAR. THERE WAS NO APPARENT OIL LEAK AND NO SIGN OF BURNING OIL. I HAD CHECKED THE OIL ABOUT 300 MILES PRIOR. THE OIL JUST DISAPPEARED AND THE ENGINE THREW A ROD NECESSITATING A NEW ENGINE. ESTIMATED REPAIR COST 5-6K. I HAVE READ OF AT LEAST 21 OTHER PEOPLE WHO EXPERIENCED THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM; THE OIL JUST DISAPPEARED AND THE ENGINE THROWS A ROD. THERE IS OBVIOUSLY A DEFECT IN THIS ENGINE. I WAS LUCKY THAT I WAS DRIVING ON A COUNTRY ROAD AND NOT A FREEWAY AND HAD A PLACE TO PULL OVER. *TR
THE GAS PEDAL STICKS AND COULD NOT BE PUSHED DOWN UNLESS YOU SLAMMED ON IT. THIS OCCURRED SEVERAL TIMES, AND EVENTUALLY STUCK COMPLETELY. THE FORD DEALERSHIP IN LYNCHBURG, VA, REPLACED THE THROTTLE BODY. NOW, TWO YEARS LATER, THE SAME PROBLEM HAS OCCURRED. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 FORD ESCAPE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED. THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL BECAME STUCK AND WAS INOPERABLE. IN ORDER TO STOP THE VEHICLE, THE GEAR WAS SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL AND THE EMERGENCY BRAKE WAS ENGAGED. THE DEALER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE WHO ADVISED THE CONTACT THERE WERE NO RECALLS FOR THE FAILURE AND OFFERED NO FURTHER ASSISTANCE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND A COMPLAINT WAS FILED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 100,081.
ACCELERATOR STICKS, WOULD NOT GO DOWN. STARTED STICKING WHEN STARTING ENGINE AND WOULD CONTINUE UNTIL DRIVEN FOR A FEW MILES. CONTINUED TO GET WORSE AND WOULD STICK WHEN PULLING OUT FROM A SIDE ROAD TO A BUSIER ROAD BELOW A HILL WHERE ONCOMING TRAFFIC COULD BE POPPING OVER HILL AND MY VEHICLE WOULD NOT MOVE. WOULD HAVE TO CONTINUE TO STOMP ACCELERATOR, FINALLY WOULD TAKE OFF. STUCK SEVERAL TIMES WHEN DRIVING DURING SNOW STORM, HAD TO CONSTANTLY STOMP ACCELERATOR, WOULD TAKE OFF AT A HIGHER THAN SAFE SPEED AND THEN I WOULD HAVE TO USE BREAK WHICH WAS NOT SAFE ON SNOW COVERED ROAD. STUCK IN MIDDLE OF INTERSECTION. HAD TO CONTINUE TO STOMP ACCELERATOR, FINALLY MOVED BEFORE ANYONE STRUCK MY VEHICLE WAS TOLD BY DEALERSHIP THAT PROBLEM WAS DUE TO COLD WEATHER BUT LAST TIME IT STUCK THE WEATHER WAS WARM. DEALERSHIP FINALLY REPLACED THROTTLE BODY AT MY EXPENSE OF $400 WITH MILEAGE AT 89888.. *TR
WIFE WAS DRIVING HER 2003 FORD ESCAPE 2.3L XLS (FWD, 5-SPD MANUAL) AT 65MPH, PRACTICALLY COASTING DOWN A HILL. 26 MINUTES AFTER ENGINE START SHE HEARD A LOUD BANG AND SUBSEQUENT POPPING SOUNDS. THIS WAS FOLLOWED IMMEDIATELY BY SEVERE POWER LOSS FROM THE ENGINE. SHE DROVE IT TO THE NEXT BEST OFF-RAMP, AN ADDITIONAL 2 MILES. WHEN SHE GOT OFF THE FREEWAY SHE SAYS SHE HAD TO REV IT UP QUITE A BIT TO MAKE AN INTERSECTION TO GET TO THE GAS STATION WHERE THE CAR ROLLED TO A STOP. THAT LOUD BANG TURNED UP TO BE THE NBR 3 CYLINDER BLOWING ITS SPARK PLUG CLEAN OFF THE SPARK PLUG BORE. THE SPARK PLUG BORE WAS COMPLETELY THREADLESS. THE SUBSEQUENT POPPING SOUNDS WERE DUE TO THE SPARK PLUG NOT BEING ON THE NBR 3 CYLINDER AS THE FUEL THAT CONTINUED TO SPRAY INTO THE CYLINDER WAS BURNING OFF. THE IMMEDIATE POWER LOSS IS A DIRECT RESULT OF THE ENGINE LOOSING 25% OF ITS CHUGGA-CHUGGA AND THE LOSS OF THE CHT SENSOR SIGNAL WHICH BOTH THEN CAUSED THE PCM (POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE) TO GO INTO LIMP MODE AND FURTHER REDUCE ENGINE POWER. FIRST THING I DID WAS PLUG IN MY OBDII SCANNER AND CHECK FOR CODES. I FOUND THE FOLLOWING THREE: P0303 - CYLINDER 3 THREE MISFIRE. P0353 - IGNITION COIL 'C' PRIMARY/SECONDARY CIRCUIT. P1289 - CYLINDER HEAD TEMP SENSOR HIGH INPUT. I THEN PERFORMED A KOEO (KEY-ON/ENGINE-OFF) CHECK WITH MY OBDII SCANNER AND FOUND THE FOLLOWING TWO CODES: P0119 - ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE CIRCUIT INTERMITTENT/ERRATIC. P1289 - CYLINDER HEAD TEMP SENSOR HIGH INPUT. THE CHT PROBE (CYLINDER HEAD TEMPERATURE) COVER/BOOT WAS POPPED OFF THE ENGINE CAMSHAFT COVER AND THE WIRES WERE BROKEN OFF THE CHT PROBE ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR. THE SPARK PLUG TERMINAL BROKE OFF. THE IGNITION COIL PACK WAS SEVERELY DAMAGED (LOOKED LIKE AN EXPLODED CIGAR, CARTOON STYLE). *TR
2006 FORD ESCAPE, 52000 MILES ON IT, NO PRIOR PROBLEMS. DRIVING ON EXPRESSWAY AT 55MPH WITH SUDDEN NOISE AND SMOKE COMING FROM UNDER HOOD AND VEHICLE. PULLED TO SIDE OF EXPRESSWAY AND NOTICE TRAIL OF OIL. TOWED TO LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP AND INFORMED THAT ENGINE HAD A HOLE IN IT. GIVEN QUOTE OF $8,000 TO REPAIR. *TR
I AM SITTING ON I-95 IN CONNECTICUT AND ALMOST GOT INTO AN ACCIDENT. MY TRUCK JUST STOPPED. THE RED TRIANGLE WITH THE EXPLANATION POINT CAME ON AND THE CAR FLASHED "STOP SAFELY". ALL SYSTEMS ARE NORMAL. THIS HAS HAPPENED 3 TIMES THIS TRIP AND I'LL BE LUCKY TO GET HOME ALIVE. *TR
GAS PEDAL STICKS, I PURCHASED THIS CAR ONE YEAR AGO. IT HAS CONSISTENTLY HAD A PROBLEM WITH STICKING SINCE I PURCHASED IT. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS 2006 FORD ESCAPE HYBRID. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 70 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE HOWEVER, THE VEHICLE CONTINUOUSLY STALLED WITHIN FIVE MILES OF TRAVEL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO A DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 125,000.
WHEN IN THE MIDDLE OF AN INTERSECTION, SUDDENLY THE "STOP SAFELY NOW" LIGHT CAME ON AND THE VEHICLE IMMEDIATELY SHUT DOWN. THE SHUT DOWN APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY A FAULTY COOLANT SYSTEM. FROM ONLINE REPORTS, THIS IS A FREQUENT PROBLEM WITH THIS MODEL AND IS VERY UNSAFE. I WAS ALMOST HIT BY SURROUNDING TRAFFIC BECAUSE OF THE IMMEDIATE LOSS OF POWER AND CONTROL. *TR
THROTTLE BODY FAILURE. IT ABSOLUTELY WOULD NOT ACCELERATE WHILE PULLING OUT INTO HEAVY TRAFFIC. IT HAPPENED REPEATEDLY LAST FALL, THEN SUDDENLY STOPPED IN DECEMBER. IT HAS BEGUN DOING IT AGAIN, THIS TIME DECIDING TO ACT UP IN HOUSTON. THERE NEEDS TO BE A RECALL FOR EVERY YEAR MODEL FOR WHICH EVEN ONE INCIDENT HAS BEEN REPORTED AS THIS IS OBVIOUSLY A PROBLEM FOR THESE VEHICLES. *TR
WE WERE TRAVELING ON THE FREEWAY WHEN A WARNING APPEARED ON THE DISPLAY " STOP SAFELY NOW ". THE ENGINE LOST POWER AND WE MANAGED TO MOVE THE CAR TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. I RESTARTED THE CAR AND IT APPEARED TO WORK OK. DROVE ANOTHER 10 MILES AND THE "STOP SAFELY NOW" REAPPEARED AND THE CAR LOST POWER. WE PULLED OVER. WE WAITED FOR 10 MINUTES, RESTARTED THE CAR AND IT DROVE US HOME. LATER WHEN WE WERE DRIVING UP OUR STREET, THE SAME THING OCCURRED. *TR
NOTICED MY GARAGE SMELLED OF GAS. FOUND DRIPS OF GASOLINE UNDER MY 2006 FORD ESCAPE. I FOUND THAT THE FUEL LINE UNDER THE SECOND PLASTIC STRAP FROM THE FUEL TANK, THE LINE HAS A SMALL SLOW LEAK. IT APPEARS THE PLASTIC STRAPS WORE A HOLE IN THE LINE. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 FORD ESCAPE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 70 MPH, THE TRANSMISSION OVERDRIVE WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED AS THE VEHICLE STALLED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A TRANSMISSION MECHANIC TO HAVE A DIAGNOSTIC PERFORMED. THE FAILURE WAS LOCATED AT THE TRANSMISSION, WHICH NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 80,000.
"STOP SAFELY NOW" APPEARS ON SCREEN WITH RED TRIANGLE: CAR GOES DEAD, COAST TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. I CAUSED A BIT OF A MESS OF THE TRAFFIC BUT NO ACCIDENTS: NO WARNING FOR A COOLING PUMP TO KEEP THE BATTERIES COOL. I FOUND THE PROBLEM ONLINE IN 5 MINUTES AND IT WAS CONFIRMED THE NEXT DAY AT FORD. "TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN FOR THIS OVERHEATING PROBLEM. TSB 08-24-5 STATES THAT SOME 2005-2008 ESCAPE HYBRID AND 2006-2008 MARINER HYBRID VEHICLES MAY EXHIBIT A RED TRIANGLE LIGHT AND CODES INDICATING A TRANSAXLE OVERTEMP. THIS CONDITION MAY RESULT IN REDUCED POWER AS THE SYSTEM ACTIVATES FAIL SAFE OPERATION. CODES P1A0E, P1A0F, P0A3C, P0A3E, P0A7A, P0A7C AND P1A0D MAY ALSO BE SET." *TR
WHILE TRAVELING ON AN INTERSTATE HWY AT 70 MPH AND PASSING A SEMI, THE ENGINE SHUT OFF AND THE STOP SAFELY NOW WARNING CAME ON. THERE WAS NO WARNING, I LOST SPEED AND BARELY MOVED OUT OF THE WAY OF THE TRUCK. THIS FAILURE ALMOST COST ME AND MY PASSENGER OUR LIVES. THE CAR STARTED AGAIN ABOUT HALF AN HOUR LATER BUT ONLY RAN LONG ENOUGH TO LIMP TO A GAS STATION. WE CALLED AAA, HAD THE CAR TOWED TO A DEALERSHIP WHERE THEY DIAGNOSED IT AS EITHER THE IGNITION SWITCH OR THE PCM...I HAVE TWO SONS WHO ARE TOP MECHANICS. THIS IS NOT THE PROBLEM. THEY BELIEVE A WIRING HARNESS FOR THE HYBRID BATTERY IS DEFECTIVE, AND THAT THERE WAS A LETTER SENT TO ALL HYBRID OWNERS. I TOOK THIS LETTER TO THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP WHEN I RECEIVED IT. THEY SAID IT DIDN'T PERTAIN TO MY VEHICLE AND DID NOT PERFORM THE REQUIRED MAINT. REALLY? THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD. HOW MANY ACCIDENTS, DEATHS, OR NEAR MISSES MUST HAPPEN BEFORE FORD REACTS AND ACTUALLY OWNS UP? FYI BLOGGING IS OUT THERE FOR US ALL! *TR
DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE AND THE CAR SHUTS DOWN DISPLAYING A STOP SAFELY NOW ERROR.... APPARENTLY A FAULTY PUMP. THE SAME PUMP THAT WE'VE ALREADY REPLACED 3 TIMES..... NOT ONLY IS THIS ANNOYING BUT IT'S A HUGE SAFETY PROBLEM. THE VEHICLE LOSES ALL POWER! *TR
WHILE DRIVING ON HIGHWAY AT HIGH SPEED (55MPH), ENTIRE POWERTRAIN (GAS ENGINE AND HYBRID MOTOR) COMPLETELY SHUTDOWN WITH NO WARNING LEADING TO AN ABRUPT LOSS OF POWER AND CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE, AND WAS UNABLE TO COMPLETELY PULL OFF THE ROAD SAFELY. THE DASHBOARD INFORMATION CENTER JUST DISPLAYED "STOP SAFELY NOW." THERE WAS NO WARNING OF THIS AT ALL. VEHICLE WOULD NOT RESTART. AFTER SITTING FOR ONE HOUR, VEHICLE RESTARTED AND DROVE PERFECTLY FOR ANOTHER 3 DAYS, THEN THE SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN ON LOCAL STREETS, LEAVING THE CAR IN A VERY DANGEROUS POSITION IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET. BROUGHT INTO SHOP AND THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH IT. I AM ALMOST AFRAID TO DRIVE THIS VEHICLE ANYMORE. *TR

AT 65 MPH ON HWY 5 IN LOS ANGELES THE VEHICLE DIED AND THE " STOP SAFELY NOW" MESSAGE CAME ON. FORTUNATELY, I WAS ABLE TO SAFELY GET FROM THE 3RD LANE TO THE SHOULDER. AFTER PUTTING THE CAR IN PARK AND TURNING OFF THE KEY I WAS ABLE TO RESTART AND CONTINUE. ABOUT 15 MILES LATER IT DID THE SAME THING AGAIN WITH THE SAME MESSAGE. AGAIN ABLE TO SAFELY PULL OFF THE FREEWAY AND AFTER PUTTING IT IN PARK TURNED THE KEY OFF AND BACK ON AND WAS AGAIN ON MY WAY. BOTH TIMES THE CRUISE CONTROL WAS ON SO AFTER THAT I DID NOT USE THE CRUISE AND HAVE NOT HAD ANOTHER OCCURRENCE. *TR

I WAS ABOUT TO EXIT THE PARKING LOT OF A GROCERY STORE WHEN THE BRAKES WENT INTO A NON-POWER BRAKE MODE. I WAS ROLLING TO THE STOP SIGN. I PROBABLY WASN'T EVEN GOING 15 MPH. AS NOTHING HAPPENED WHEN I TOUCHED THE BRAKES, I HAMMERED THEM AND CAME TO A SHARP JERKING HALT. IT WAS A LITTLE FRIGHTENING AS ONCOMING TRAFFIC WAS GOING 45-50 MPH. THEN THE ABS AND BRAKE SYSTEM LIGHTING CAME ON. IF I HAD NOT KNOWN HOW NON-POWER BRAKES FELT, I PROBABLY WOULD HAVE SLID INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN FATAL. I SEE ONLINE A LOT OF COMPLAINTS WITH THIS SAME ISSUE WITH THE BRAKING SYSTEMS OF THE ESCAPE HYBRIDS. I AM NOT SURE WHY IT IS NOT COVERED ON THE 100,000 MILE/ 8 YR WARRANTY AND ALSO, WHY THERE HAS BEEN NO RECALL. I SEE THERE IS A RECALL FOR WINDSHIELD WIPERS. I SERIOUSLY THINK THIS IS A LITTLE MORE OF A SAFETY ISSUE. *TR

I DROVE MY CAR AROUND THE CORNER TO A FRIEND'S HOUSE. I STARTED TO SMELL SOMETHING BURNING. I PULLED INTO MY FRIEND'S DRIVEWAY AND STOPPED, BUT THE CAR WAS STILL RUNNING AND I SAW SMOKE COMING FROM UNDER THE FLOOR AREA AND DASH OF THE CAR. SMOKE FILLED UP THE INSIDE OF THE CAR. I TURNED OFF THE CAR AND OPENED ALL THE DOORS. HAD I NOT TURNED IT OFF, IT WOULD HAVE CAUGHT ON FIRE AS IT WAS SMOKING REALLY BAD AND EXTREMELY HOT INSIDE THE INTERIOR OF THE CAB. THE CAR WAS ABLE TO START BUT NOTHING IN THE DASH AREA WAS WORKING - THE SPEEDOMETER AND GAUGES WILL NO LONGER FUNCTION. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND INSTRUCTED THE CONTACT TO HAVE THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSIS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 60,000.
THE AIR BAG ASSEMBLY ON THE STEERING WHEEL HAS AN EXTREMELY THIN COVER, IT IS MUCH THINNER THAN THE ONE ON MY 2003 FORD EXCURSION OR THE ONE MY 2009 KIA. THE COVERING IS A LITTLE THICKER THAN A PIECE OF PAPER AND IT IS NOW CRACKING. IT CURRENTLY HAS ABOUT A ONE AND A HALF INCH CRACK ON THE COVERING LOCATED ON THE RIGHT SIDE. THIS SEEMS TO BE A SAFETY CONCERN. THIS VEHICLE IS GARAGED AND DOES NOT REMAIN OUTDOORS FOR EXTENDED PERIODS. WHEN IT IS OUTDOORS A SUNSCREEN SHADE IS USED ON THE WINDSHIELD TO REDUCE SOLAR DAMAGE. *TR
I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY IN MY 2006 FORD ESCAPE HYBRID GOING ABOUT 65 MPH AND STARTED TO ACCELERATE TO PASS ANOTHER VEHICLE AND MY CAR SUDDENLY SHUT DOWN. IT WAS AS IF I SLAMMED ON THE BRAKES. AND I COULD NOT PICK UP SPEED AFTER THAT. THERE WAS NO WARNING ON MY DASHBOARD ONLY THE DISPLAY SAYING TO "STOP SAFELY NOW". I PULLED OVER AND LET THE CAR IDLE FOR A MINUTE. THERE WAS STILL NOT OTHER WARNING AND THE CAR WAS NOT MAKING ANY NOISES AND NO STEAM COMING FROM HOOD. I SHUT IT DOWN, WAITED A MINUTE, THEN RESTARTED IT. IT STARTED BACK UP FINE. NOTHING ON THE DISPLAY NOW AND STILL NOT MAKING ANY NOISE. I PULLED AHEAD A LITTLE TO SEE IF IT WOULD MOVE AND IT DID. I LET IT IDLE FOR ANOTHER MINUTE THEN PROCEEDED BACK ONTO HIGHWAY TO TRY TO GET HOME. I GOT UP TO ABOUT 40 MPH AND THE SAME EXACT THING HAPPENED. I PULLED BACK TO SIDE OF HIGHWAY AND CALLED AAA FOR A TOW TRUCK. WHEN THE TOW TRUCK CAME ABOUT 1 1/2 HOURS LATER, MY CAR WOULD NOT START AT ALL AT THAT POINT. TOWED IT TO A SHOP WHO THEN SAID THE CAR'S OIL WAS NOT READING ON THE DIPSTICK. I HAD MY OIL CHANGED IN MARCH BY A REPUTABLE COMPANY AND HAVE ALWAYS HAD MY OIL CHANGED CONSISTENTLY. THEY TOLD ME MY ENGINE WAS GONE AND I NEEDED A WHOLE NEW ONE. I THEN HAD MY CAR TOWED TO A FORD DEALERSHIP, WHERE I BOUGHT, IT FOR A SECOND OPINION AND HE SAID THE SAME THING THAT I NEEDED TO HAVE MY ENGINE REPLACED DUE TO INTERNAL ENGINE NOISE. THEY ALSO TOLD ME I NEEDED THE THROTTLE BODY AND COOLANT PUMP REPLACED. THEY ALSO SAID NO VISIBLE EXTERNAL OIL LEAKS AND NO INDICATION OF INTERNAL ENGINE USE SUCH AS "BLOW-BY". THEIR OVERALL ESTIMATE TO FIX MY CAR, INCLUDING A NEW ENGINE, IS $8000.00. I NEVER HAD AT ANY POINT ANY INDICATION THAT SOMETHING WAS WRONG WITH MY CAR. NO NOISES, NO WARNING LIGHTS. I BOUGHT IT BRAND NEW. I CAN'T AFFORD REPAIRS OF THAT MAGNITUDE. I CALLED FORD AND THEY SAID THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO. *TR
MY 2006 FORD ESCAPE HYBRID CUT OFF THE COMBUSTION ENGINE WHILE TRAVELING DOWN A COUNTRY RD. WAS ABLE TO PULL OFF WITH DECLINING POWER IN THE ELECTRIC ENGINE. DISPLAY READ "PULL OVER SAFELY" AND NOTHING ELSE. I BROUGHT IT IN TO BOTH A FORD DEALERSHIP WHO REFERRED ME TO A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T HAVE ANYONE WHO KNEW ABOUT HYBRID CARS. SINCE THE PROBLEM DID NOT OCCUR AT THE TIME I BROUGHT IT IN AND THERE WERE NO PROBLEMS SHOWING ON A DIAGNOSTIC TEST THEY COULD NOT DO ANYTHING. THE SUV HAS DONE THIS NUMEROUS TIMES SINCE AND SOMETIMES SHUTS OFF BOTH ENGINES IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HIGHWAY. I THOUGHT SPEED AND HARD DRIVING WERE THE PROBLEM WHICH IT TENDS TO HAPPEN MORE SO ON 45MIN OR GREATER DRIVES BUT HAS BEEN KNOWN TO DO THIS AT 15MPH IN RESIDENTIAL AREAS. VERY SCARY, ESPECIALLY ON CROWDED HIGH SPEED ROADS AS YOU CANNOT "PULL OVER SAFELY" WITH NEITHER MOTOR RUNNING. IF THEIR EXCUSE IS ITS A SAFETY FEATURE IT IS NOT VERY SAFE. I CONTACTED FORD VIA E-MAIL AND THEY WERE NICE ENOUGH TO REFER ME BACK TO THE ORIGINAL FORD DEALERSHIP AND SEND THE DEALERSHIP THE E-MAIL I HAD SENT TO THEIR CUSTOMER SUPPORT IN CONFIDENCE STATING I DID NOT TRUST THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY SHOULD INVESTIGATE THEIR PRACTICES (FOR PREVIOUS REASONS RELATING TO OTHER CAR ISSUES). SAW MANY POSTS IN FORUMS THAT THIS PROBLEM RELATES TO THE COOLING PUMP FOR THE ELECTRIC MOTOR. I WAS DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 40 MPH ( 40-65 MPH INTERVALS BETWEEN HIGHWAYS) FOR ABOUT 20 MINUTES WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN MY CAR IS LOOSING POWER, SO I STEPPED ON THE GASOLINE PEDAL A LITTLE MORE TO KEEP THE SPEED. THE CHECK BRAKE SYSTEM MESSAGE APPEARS IN MESSAGE SYSTEM ON 2006 FORD ESCAPE HYBRID, WITH THE ACCOMPANYING BRAKE WARNING SYMBOL LIGHT COMING ON. THE BRAKE PEDAL SEEMS TO LOSE SOME PRESSURE IN THE PEDAL AND GOES FURTHER TO THE FLOOR. THE BRAKE FLUID RESERVOIR IS FULL, SO THE BRAKE FLUID IS NOT LOW. THIS HAS HAPPENED ON AND OFF NOW FOR THE LAST FEW DAYS. I HAD A BRAKE JOB DONE ON THE REAR BRAKES 2 MONTHS AGO, AND THE DEALERSHIP SAYS THE FRONT BRAKES ARE FINE. THEY RECOMMEND REPLACING THE MASTER CYLINDER FOR 1300 DOLLARS, AND THEN STATE THAT IT MIGHT NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM AND THEY WOULD THEN HAVE TO REPLACE A CONTROL MODULE FOR ABOUT 4500 TO 5000 DOLLARS. I NOTICED ONLINE THAT A LOT OF PEOPLE SEEM TO BE HAVING THIS SAME PROBLEM WITH THE FORD ESCAPE HYBRID FROM 2005 TO 2006, AND THEY ARE INCURRING THE SAME COSTLY REPAIR. THE TECH SAID THAT FORD HAD REDESIGNED THE REAR DOOR LATCH AND THAT IT REQUIRES A NEW CABLE WHICH WILL COST ME $404.00 TO REPLACE. NEEDLESS TO SAY MY JAW HIT THE FLOOR, BECAUSE THAT WAS JUST ONE DOOR. APPARENTLY, AFTER SEARCHING ONLINE FOR A CHEAPER SOLUTION, I CAME ACROSS SO MANY COMPLAINTS OF THE SAME PROBLEM SINCE 2001. EVIDENTLY FORD HAVE NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM. IT'S A SAFETY HAZARD. IF THE REAR DOOR LATCH IS LIKELY TO GO BAD THEN IT'S JEOPARDIZING THE SAFETY OF THE CHILDREN THAT'S REQUIRED TO SIT IN THE BACK SEAT. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A MECHANIC HOWEVER, THE TECHNICIAN WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM IS UNSTABLE AND IS TRIGGERED RANDOMLY. THIS IS AN ONGOING PROBLEM WITH THIS VEHICLE AND HAS BEEN REPORTED WIDELY AMONG OTHER OWNERS OF FORD ESCAPE - MODEL AND YEAR ARE VARIED. THE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM IS TRIGGERED BY NO EXTERNAL CAUSE BUT DOES SEEM TO REACT STRONGLY TO HEAT. ALTHOUGH LATELY THIS IS NOW HAPPENING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT. FORD CHARGES EXCESSIVELY FOR DIAGNOSES AND REPAIR AND IT IS GENERALLY FOUND TO BE A PROBLEM WITH AN ACCESS POINT SENSOR. THIS IS A SYSTEMIC PROBLEM WITH THE FORD ALARM SYSTEM AND SHOULD NOT BE THE CONSUMER THAT BEARS THE BRUNT OF RESPONSIBILITY FOR A DEFECT THAT THE CORPORATION IS BUILDING INTO ALL YEARS OF THE FORD ESCAPE.
