WHILE TRAVELING AT 70MPH, VEHICLE SUDDENLY STALLED WHILE DRIVING IN THE CENTER LANE OF A HIGHWAY IN HEAVY TRAFFIC. NO WARNING SIGNS WERE DISPLAYED. AFTER PULLING TO THE SHOULDER, VEHICLE WAS ABLE TO BE RESTARTED AND SEEMED TO BE FINE. SERVICE TECHNICIAN FOUND A FAILURE CODE FOR 'THROTTLE STUCK CLOSED' WITH 'FREEZE DATA' SHOWING IT HAPPENED AT 71MPH. HE INSPECTED THE THROTTLE AND FOUND NO PROBLEMS. AS A PRECAUTION, HE CLEANED THE THROTTLE BLADE WITH A CLEANING WIPE. A WEEK LATER, THE VEHICLE STALLED AGAIN AS I WAS PULLING INTO TRAFFIC. IN ORDER TO KEEP THE VEHICLE RUNNING, I THEN NEEDED TO KEEP MY FOOT ON BOTH THE GAS AND BRAKE WHILE AT STOPS. RETURN TO MY TECHNICIAN AND HE DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS A DEFECTIVE THROTTLE BODY. HE SAID THAT THE COMPUTER DATA SHOWED THE THROTTLE OPEN ONLY 52% WHEN THE THROTTLE WAS WIDE OPEN. VEHICLE HAS NOT YET BEEN REPAIRED. *TR
THE CAR JERKS FORWARD WITHOUT PRESSING THE GAS PEDAL. WHEN SWITCHING FROM REVERSE TO DRIVE IT JERKS FORWARD ALSO. I JUST READ AN ARTICLE THAT TALKS ABOUT THE SAME TYPE OF PROBLEM WITH OTHER FORD ESCAPES. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 FORD ESCAPE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE ATTEMPTING TO EXIT THE VEHICLE, THE SEAT BELT WOULD NOT UN-LATCH. AFTER FOUR MINUTES THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO UN-LATCH THE SEAT BELT AND EXIT THE VEHICLE. IN ADDITION, THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE SEAT BELT COULD NO LONGER BE LATCHED. THE CONTACT DID NOT TAKE THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER NOR CALL THE MANUFACTURER. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 70,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 FORD ESCAPE. THE CONTACT STATED THE INSTRUCTIONS IN THE MANUAL INDICATED THAT IF THE VEHICLE WAS ON THE VEHICLE COULD BE TOWED IN NEUTRAL GEAR FOR SIX AT 65 MPH. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED BEHIND THE MOTOR HOME AND THE TRANSMISSION FLUID AND THE ENGINE OVERHEATED; THEREFORE, THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT START. THE CONTACT INSTALLED AN AUXILARY PUMP TO KEEP THE FLUID FROM OVER HEATING; OTHERWISE, THE TRANSMISSION HAD TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THE PUMP WOULD VOID THE WARRANTY. THE CONTACT STATED THE VEHICLE WAS SOLD AS VEHICLE THAT COULD BE TOWED. THE VEHICLE DID NOT OVERHEAT AFTER THE PUMP WAS ADDED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 65. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 60,000. I HAVE OWNED 2009 FORD ESCAPE LIMITED V-6 LESS THAN TWO MONTHS. WHILE DRIVING 35-40 MPH THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY WOULD NOT ACCELERATE. IT DID NOT STOP RUNNING SO I WAS ABLE TO EXIT THE ROADWAY AND RETURN HOME. IT TOOK SEVERAL MINUTES FOR IT TO RETURN TO NORMAL. I DID NOT GET A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT OR OTHER WARNING. DEALER ADVISES I SHOULD WAIT TO SEE IF IT HAPPENS AGAIN AS IT WOULD BE DIFFICULT TO DIAGNOSE AT THIS POINT. AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT I WAS ON MY WAY TO INTERSTATE HIGHWAY WITH 70 MPH SPEED LIMIT AND A LOT OF HEAVY TRUCK TRAFFIC. I FEEL FORTUNATE INCIDENT HAPPENED WHEN AND WHERE IT DID. *TR
WHILE DRIVING ON US 441. OUR CAR STALLED ON THE MOUNTAIN BETWEEN CHEROKEE, N.C. AND GATLINBURG, TENN. WE PULLED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, TURNED THE ENGINE OFF, AND WERE ABLE TO RESTART IT AND CONTINUE FOR A FEW MILES BEFORE THE PROBLEM RECURRED. THIS STOP AND GO OCCURRED ABOUT 7 TIMES BEFORE WE WERE ABLE TO GET TO SEVIERVILLE, TENN TO GET IT REPAIRED. MY CONCERN IS THAT THERE ARE FEW PLACES TO PULL TO THE SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN, SO IT WAS DANGEROUS FOR US AND OTHER CARS TO STOP AS WE DID. THE DEALER TOLD US THE PROBLEM WAS CAUSED BY A DEFECTIVE THROTTLE BODY. *TR
I WAS DRIVING ON A FREEWAY GOING APPROX 55 MPH. AFTER DRIVING APPROX 6 MILES THE RPM'S STARTED TO REV UP AND DOWN FROM 500 TO THE MAX RPM. I COULD HEAR THE ENGINE REVVING BUT MY SPEED WAS NOT CHANGING. I COULD NOT ACCELERATE, I COULD ONLY BREAK. I QUICKLY PULLED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, SHUT OFF THE ENGINE AND WAITED FOR APPROX. 5 MINUTES. I RESTARTED THE ENGINE, REVVED THE ENGINE A FEW TIMES. ALL SEEMED NORMAL. SO I CONTINUED SLOWLY. NOTHING FURTHER HAPPENED FOR 3 WEEKS. THEN IT HAPPENED AGAIN, ALSO ON THE FREEWAY AT THE SAME APPROXIMATE SPEED. I DID THE SAME THING AND HAD NO ISSUES UNTIL RECENTLY. SINCE THEN MY MPG HAS GONE DOWN FROM AVG 28 TO AVG 24 MPG. THE ENGINE/TRANS? ALWAYS HESITATES TO SHIFT AND OCCASIONALLY THE RPM'S GO HIGHER THEN THEY SHOULD BEFORE THE ENGINE SHIFTS BACK DOWN. TWO DAYS AGO ON 11/22/12 I WAS STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT AFTER GETTING OFF THE FREEWAY (70 MPH). AFTER SITTING THROUGH THE RED LIGHT I ATTEMPTED TO ACCELERATE, MY CAR WOULD NOT MOVE. THE RPM'S DID NOT MOVE EITHER, THEY WERE STEADY AT IDLE RPM OF ABOUT 1500. I HIT THE GAS PEDDLE AGAIN AND FINALLY MY CAR JERKED INTO GEAR AND REVVED UP TO ABOUT 3000 RPM. I TRIED TO REPLICATE THIS AT THE NEXT STOP LIGHT BUT IT HASN'T DONE IT SINCE. I WILL BE TAKING MY CAR IN ON MONDAY TO HAVE IT LOOKED AT BUT FEAR THAT DEALER WILL AGAIN FIND NOTHING WRONG. AFTER MY FIRST INCIDENT I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY FOUND NOTHING WRONG WITH IT. I WAS TOLD IT WAS PROBABLY JUST BECAUSE IT WAS HOT OUTSIDE. *TR
MY FORD ESCAPE IS A 2009, 3 YEAR OLD CAR WITH REGULAR MAINTENANCE CHECKS. ON JULY 12TH, I OPENED AND CLOSED THE DRIVER DOOR AND THE WINDOW SLID DOWN. ONCE TAKEN TO GET DIAGNOSED, I WAS TOLD THE REGULAR CABLE HAD GONE OUT. I HAD IT FIXED AND WAS ON MY WAY. ON JULY 16TH, JUST 4 DAYS AFTER, I WAS PICKING UP DRY CLEANING, I PUT CLOTHES IN THE BACK SEAT, AND ONCE THE DOOR WAS CLOSED, SAME THING HAPPENED, WINDOW SLOWLY SLID DOWN. NO OPENING/CLOSING WINDOWS TO PROVOKE IT. I WAS TOLD ONCE AGAIN IT WAS THE REGULATOR CABLE AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. BOTH PROBLEMS EXACTLY THE SAME, WITHIN 4 DAYS OF EACH OTHER. ALL MECHANICS AND SERVICE REPS TOLD ME IT WAS VERY UNUSUAL THAT THE REGULATOR GO OUT ON SUCH A NEW CAR. CALLED FORD CORPORATE AND WAS UNABLE TO GET ASSISTANCE TO PAY FOR THIS DEFECT. HOW CAN A 3 YEAR OLD CAR WITH NO EXTREME USE OF THE POWER WINDOWS BE CAPABLE OF SUCH PROBLEMS? THE CAR IS DEFECTIVE AND FORD SHOULD'VE PAID FOR THE REPAIR. *TR
DRIVING AT 65 MPH ON HIGHWAY WHEN CAR SUDDENLY LOST POWER STEERING AND POWER BRAKES. CAR THEN RAPIDLY DECELERATED AND I WAS ABLE TO EXIT THE HIGHWAY WHERE THE CAR COMPLETELY DIED. THROTTLE BODY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. *TR
I WAS DRIVING DOWN HIGHWAY IN MORNING TRAFFIC WITH CRUISE CONTROL SET AT 55-60MPH WHEN ALL ACCELERATION CUT OFF AND I HAD TO IMMEDIATELY PULL OVER AND PUT MY 2009 FORD ESCAPE INTO PARK, AT WHICH POINT THE ENGINE WAS SHUDDERING VIOLENTLY AND MY WRENCH LIGHT (POWERTRAIN) APPEARED IN THE DASH. SHUT OFF ENGINE, WAITED 1-2 MINS AND RESTART ENGINE. RAN NORMALLY, PULLED ONTO HIGHWAY AGAIN AND SET CRUISE WHEN THE SAME HAPPENED A 2ND TIME. HAPPENED 3-5 MORE TIMES (WITH & WITHOUT CRUISE) OVER THE NEXT DAY UNTIL I COULD GET MY CAR TO THE FORD DEALER FOR SERVICE. FORD DEALER ADVISED IT WAS THROTTLE BODY IN ADDITION TO OTHER SENSORS. (THE THROTTLE BODY WAS NOT COVERED UNDER POWERTRAIN WARRANTY AND COST ME $300 IN PARTS & LABOR!!) THE ERROR CODES WERE: P0012, P0341, P0346, P2111, & P2112. *TR
WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY THE VEHICLE LOST POWER AND THE WRENCH LIGHT CAME ON. IT WOULDN'T ACCELERATE I WAS ABLE TO COAST TO THE SHOULDER UNHARMED, BUT IT WAS A MORNING COMMUTE AND THE HIGHWAY WAS VERY BUSY I COULD HAVE EASILY BEEN HIT. I TURNED THE CAR OFF AND IT DID START UP AGAIN. THIS HAPPENED 2 MORE TIMES IN THE SAME MORNING. I CALLED THE FORD SERVICE DEPARTMENT AND IMMEDIATELY BROUGHT MY CAR IN PER THEIR INSTRUCTION. AFTER HOLDING MY CAR FOR 2 DAYS AND CHARGING ME $130 FOR SERVICE THEY TOLD ME THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO BECAUSE THE WRENCH LIGHT DOESN'T HOLD CODES. THEY KNEW WHEN I DROPPED IT OFF THE ONLY LIGHT THAT CAME ON WAS NO LONGER ON WHEN I BROUGHT THE CAR IN AND THEY DIDN'T WARN ME IN ADVANCE THAT THEY WEREN'T GOING BE ABLE TO DO ANYTHING WITHOUT IT HAPPENING WHILE THEY HAD IT. MY VEHICLE AT THIS TIME WAS UNDER MAINTENANCE AND POWER TRAIN WARRANTY. SO I TOOK IT HOME AND THIS HAPPENED ABOUT 20 MORE TIMES BOTH ON THE HIGHWAY AND DRIVING THROUGH TOWN OVER ABOUT A 7 MONTH PERIOD. THIS HAPPENED AGAIN 2 DAYS AGO 4 TIMES ON MY WAY HOME FROM WORK ON A VERY NARROW ROAD SO IT WAS VERY DANGEROUS. THIS TIME THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT STAYED ON AND I MADE ANOTHER APPOINTMENT WITH FORD. I WAS TOLD IT HAD THE CODES FOR (THROTTLE BODY STUCK OPEN/CLOSED) THEY WERE ABLE TO REPLACE THE THROTTLE BODY WHICH I HOPE WILL FIX THIS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS PROBLEM. MY CAR IS STILL UNDER POWERTRAIN WARRANTY, BUT I WAS TOLD THAT THIS PART IS NOT COVERED. SO I PAID FULL PRICE FOR THE PART BECAUSE MY SAFETY IS MORE IMPORTANT, BUT THIS SHOULD REALLY BE RECALL. THERE WERE NUMEROUS TIMES I COULD HAVE BEEN IN A VERY SERIOUS ACCIDENT. *TR
DRIVING FORD ESCAPE 2009 AT CONSISTENT HIGHWAY SPEED FOR APPROXIMATELY 20 MINUTES. IPHONE PLUGGED INTO USB PORT, HEAD LIGHTS, AIR CONDITIONING ON AND WORKING. SUDDEN FEELING OF HESITATION AND THEN FLOATING. ORANGE WRENCH LIGHT APPEARED. SUDDEN LOSS OF RPM'S AND ENGINE POWER. SEMI-TRUCK BEHIND ME WEAVED INTO OTHER LANE. I ACTIVATED HAZARD LIGHTS AND COASTED/CHANGED LANES OVER 3 LANES OF HIGHWAY TRAFFIC TO SHOULDER OF EXPRESSWAY. STOPPED AND PARKED CAR. WRENCH LIGHT REMAINED ON. AIR CONDITIONING, MUSIC, AND LIGHTS REMAINED WORKING. I LOOKED UP CODE IN OWNER'S MANUAL AND FOUND "POWERTRAIN" "SERVICE IMMEDIATELY". I TURNED OFF CAR. I TURNED OFF AIR CONDITIONING, UNPLUGGED IPHONE, MUSIC, AND LIGHTS. I RESTARTED CAR. CAR IMMEDIATELY RESTARTED WITH NO WARNING LIGHT. WITH CAR IN PARK, TESTED ACCELERATION, NO HESITATION WITH RPMS. I TURNED OFF CAR AND WAITED 5 MINUTES. I TURNED CAR BACK ON, AGAIN NO WRENCH LIGHT, NO HESITATION WITH RPM/GAS PEDAL TESTED. I TURNED OFF HAZARDS AND ATTEMPTED TO DRIVE. NO FURTHER PROBLEM DRIVING THAT NIGHT OR THE NEXT DAY. ON MONDAY I TOOK CAR TO FORD DEALERSHIP FOR INSPECTION. I WAS CALLED AND TOLD THAT BATTERY NEEDED REPLACEMENT. I EXPLAINED I WAS CONCERNED BECAUSE THERE WAS NO LOSS OF AUXILIARY POWER, RATHER ENGINE POWER. THE SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE STATED THEY WOULD REPLACE BATTERY AT MY AGREEMENT AND CONTINUE TESTING. I WAS CALLED LATER IN DAY AN NOTIFIED THAT THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH MY CAR. WHILE WAITING FOR CALL FROM DEALER, I "GOOGLED" FORD ESCAPE 2009 WRENCH LIGHT. I FOUND MULTIPLE PROBLEMS ATTRIBUTED TO THROTTLE BODY STICKING, WITH INABILITY OF FORD DEALERS ABLE TO IDENTIFY THIS RECURRENT PROBLEM. MY CAR REMAINS AT DEALER. I CALLED FORD DEALER AGAIN TODAY AND WAS TOLD MY CAR WAS FINE TO DRIVE. I AM CONCERNED TO DRIVE THIS VEHICLE ON ANY STREET/EXPRESSWAY WITH THE POTENTIAL FOR THIS TO HAPPEN AGAIN, AS REPORTED BY OTHER DRIVERS. *JS
WHEN SLOWING DOWN ENGINE WOULD STALL AT ANY SPEED. SLOWLY PROGRESSED INTO A HESITATION FROM A RED LIGHT. SPARATIC IDLE AFTER STOPPING. WRENCH LIGHT WOULD COME ON EVERY TIME. NOW CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND WRENCH LIGHT ON TOGETHER. *TT
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 FORD ESCAPE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 30 MPH, THE VEHICLE ENGAGED INTO A ROUGH IDLE AND STALLED. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING LIGHT AND THE WRENCH WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE FAILURE RECURRED MULTIPLE TIMES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER, WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE THROTTLE BODY WAS DEFECTIVE AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF FAILURE WHO FILED A REPORT AND DID NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 51,500 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 52,000.
ESCAPE WAS IN FOR SCHEDULED OIL CHANGE. UPON LEAVING THE AUTHORIZED FORD GARAGE THE VEHICLE STARTED SHAKING AND HAD LITTLE ACCELERATION. I TURNED AROUND AND WENT BACK TO THE FORD GARAGE AND HAD THEM LOOK AT IT. THE PROBLEM SELF CORRECTED WHILE AT GARAGE. THEY SAID THAT IT WAS THE THROTTLE BODY AND ACCORDING TO THE COMPUTER, THERE HAD BEEN ANOTHER INCIDENT RECORDED WHILE UNDER PREVIOUS OWNERSHIP. FORD GARAGE SAID TO REPLACE THROTTLE BODY. I HAVE NOT YET REPLACED IT. *TR
THIS PAST WINTER THE DRIVERS SIDE EXIT SHAFT SEAL FAILED. THE TRANSMISSION WAS SERVICED BY OUR LOCAL FORD DEALER. UPON RETURN MY WIFE NOTED THE STEERING COCKED TO THE LEFT SLIGHTLY BUT NO OTHER ISSUES, I TOLD HER THAT THEY PROBABLE WERE OFF A TOOTH ON THE PITMAN ARM AND THAT SHE NEEDED TO TAKE IT BACK, SHE HAD NOT. THE DAY IN QUESTION WAS THE FIRST TIME THAT I HAD WITNESSED THE MALFUNCTION. I HAD MADE A TURN OFF A SECONDARY STREET TO ENTER THE HIGHWAY. IT WAS ABOUT A 90 DEGREE TURN, AND WHEN I EXITED THE TURN, THE STEERING WHEEL WAS STILL AT A 45 DEGREE ANGLE OFF NEUTRAL. IT STAYED THIS WAY FOR A FEW SECONDS AS I ACCELERATED DOWN THE ON RAMP, THEN VIOLENTLY RETURNED TO NEUTRAL. I PULLED OFF TO THE SHOULDER AND CHECKED TO SEE WHAT HAPPENED. THIS HAPPENED TWO MORE TIMES THAT DAY AND THE FOLLOWING DAY. I MADE SEVERAL 90 DEGREE TURNS TO SEE IF I COULD DUPLICATE THE ISSUE. MY WIFE LET ME KNOW THAT THIS HAD HAPPENED TO HER, USUALLY WHEN SHE WAS PARKING THE CAR AT SCHOOL. WHEN SHE STARTED THE VEHICLE, THE WHEEL WOULD RETURN TO NORMAL. IT IS CURRENTLY AT THE DEALERSHIP FOR THIS ISSUE. I WAS TOLD THIS MORNING THAT THERE ARE PARTS ON ORDER FOR THE STEERING GEAR AND STEERING POSITION SENSOR. WHEN WE RETURNED HOME, WE WERE IN FT WORTH TEXAS FOR THE WEEKEND IN QUESTION, I CALLED THE DEALER AND WAS TOLD THEY HAD SEEN THIS A FEW TIMES BUT THAT IT WAS OKAY TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE UNTIL IT WAS TAKEN IN FOR SERVICE. I WANTED TO MAKE SURE AND NOTIFY THE NHTSA. *TR

THE CONTACT ALSO MENTIONED THAT THE VEHICLE INTERMITTENTLY STALLED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS FOUND THAT THE THROTTLE BODY HAD FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED ABOUT THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 25,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 FORD ESCAPE. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE SITTING AT A STOP SIGN BOTH SIDE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE INSURANCE COMPANY STATED THAT HE NEEDED TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 63,000.
PULLED OUT ONTO A VERY BUSY SECONDARY ROADWAY...APPLIED PRESSURE TO THE ACCELERATOR AND IT JUST SAT THERE WHILE ONCOMING TRAFFIC CLOSED IN ON ME. THIS WAS THE FIRST OF MANY HESITATIONS THAT NEARLY GOT ME KILLED. TO MAKE IT WORSE...WHEN POWER COMES BACK IT COMES BACK SO FAST IT THROWS YOU BACK IN THE SEAT...ACTUALLY BURNING RUBBER. AFTER A YEAR OF INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS WITH THIS I TOOK IT INTO FORD DEALERSHIP AND THEY DIAGNOSED A FAULTY THROTTLE BODY....TROUBLE CODE P2112. SINCE THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH ROUTINE MAINTENANCE I EXPECTED FORD TO TAKE CARE OF IT. THEY WANT TO CHARGE ME $400 DOLLARS TO FIX A PROBLEM THEY CREATED WITH SUBSTANDARD PARTS. *TR
WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE I SUDDENLY LOST POWER AND WRENCH AND ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. I WAS ABLE TO TURN THE CAR BACK ON AFTER A COMPLETE STOP. CAR WAS TAKEN IMMEDIATELY TO FORD AND THEY SAID NOTHING WRONG WITH IT AND IF IT HAPPENS AGAIN BRING IT IN. AFTER MULTIPLE TIMES ON CITY STREETS AND INTERSTATES WHICH I FEARED FOR MY LIFE, THE CAR WOULD HAVE NO POWER AND THE ENGINE WOULD NOT ACCELERATE WHEN I WOULD STEP ON GAS. I HAD TO PAY OUT OF POCKET DUE TO OUT OF WARRANTY BUT THEY SURELY KNOW THERE IS A DEFECT THERE IN THE THROTTLE BOTTLE AND CERTAINLY AN ENDANGERMENT TO THOSE DRIVING THE VEHICLE AND TO THOSE AROUND THEM. *TR
INTERMITTENT PROBLEM WHEN DRIVING GAS PEDAL SEEMS TO LOOSE RESISTANCE, VEHICLE STARTS TO SLOW EVEN THOUGH ADDING MORE POWER, AS VEHICLE SLOWS AND APPROACHES 5 MPH IT STARTS TRANSMISSION TO SEIZE AND ENGINE TO BACKFIRE. DURING A COLD START AND VEHICLE IS PUT IN EITHER DRIVE OR REVERSE, THE BRAKE PEDAL IS MOMENTARILY UNRESPONSIVE AND HAS TO BE PRESS EXTREMELY HARD IN ORDER TO ENGAGE BRAKES. AT TIMES THE BRAKE PEDAL HAS TO BE "PUMPED" TO STOP THE VEHICLE. IT FEELS AS IF THERE AREN'T ANY POWER BRAKES. FREQUENCY OF OCCURRENCE HAS INCREASED OVER TIME AT FIRST THE PROBLEM OCCURRED RARELY, NOW MORE OFTEN THEN NOT. THE VEHICLE WAS BROUGHT TO THE FORD DEALER WITH THE ISSUE IN 06/2012, THEY FOUND NO PROBLEM. I AM BRING THE VEHICLE IN AGAIN 12/10/2012. ON 3/29/12 I WAS DRIVING ON A MAIN ROAD AND THE CAR JUST STOPPED WORKING, ALL THE LIGHTS CAME ON AND I HAD NO POWER. I PULLED TO THE SIDE, LUCKILY NO ONE WAS NEAR ME, AND PUT THE CAR IN PARK. I CALLED MY HUSBAND TO COME OVER AND WHEN HE ARRIVED, HE TRIED TO START THE CAR AGAIN AND IT STARTED RIGHT UP. I DROVE IT TO THE FORD DEALER SERVICE CENTER AND THEY DISCOVERED IT WAS THE THROTTLE BODY THAT WAS DEFECTIVE. SINCE THE CAR WAS NOT UNDER WARRANTY I HAD TO PAY. IN DECEMBER 2012 THE SAME THING HAPPENED AND AFTER SEVERAL TIMES I BROUGHT IT IN AGAIN. I WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS MOST LIKELY (THEY ARE NEVER SURE) THE THROTTLE BODY AGAIN BUT THEY WERE NOT SURE. I PAID FOR A REPLACEMENT AGAIN. IN FEBRUARY 2013 AFTER 2 REPLACEMENTS IT IS HAPPENING AGAIN. OF COURSE THEY CANNOT TELL FOR SURE IF IT IS A BAD THROTTLE BODY SO I NOW HAVE A RECORDING DEVICE ATTACHED TO MY CAR SO IF IT HAPPENS AGAIN I CAN PRESS THE BUTTON AND IT WILL RECORD WHAT THE ENGINE WAS DOING. POWER STEERING HAS TURNED OFF WHILE DRIVING .GOING 45 MILES A HOUR AND TURNING ON INTERSTATE AND ALMOST RAN OFF ROAD. STOPPED AND TURN OFF CAR AND RESTARTED, WHICH MADE IT START WORKING AGAIN. NEXT TIME PULLING OUT OF STORE PARKING LOT AND WENT OUT AGAIN, HIT CURB BEFORE I WAS ABLE TO TURN BACK TO STREET.THIS ELECTRIC STEERING IS A DEATH TRAP AND SHOULD BE FIXED BEFORE SOMEBODY DIES.NOW IM AT 90,000 MILES AND IT IS GOTTEN REAL BAD. TOOK IT TO LOCAL DEALER, THEY TRIED TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM WITH NO LUCK, KEPT IT OVERNIGHT TO DRIVE IT THE NEXT DAY IN HOPES IT WOULD DUPLICATE THE ISSUE, BUT, IT DIDN'T. THE DEALER ASSESSED IT AS A COMPUTER MALFUNCTION AND REPROGRAMMED THE COMPUTER. MY WIFE AND I HAVE HAD INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS WITH JERKING UPON ACCELERATING SINCE. TODAY, 4/23/12, I WAS TRAVELING APPROX 40 MPH AND IT STALLED WHILE IN TRAFFIC. I WAS GLAD THE PERSON BEHIND ME STOPPED WITHOUT REAR ENDING ME. THE REAR HATCH ON MY 2009 FORD ESCAPE XLT 4X4 FINALLY QUIT OPENING. I HAVE HAD THE VEHICLE INTO THE DEALER FOR NUMEROUS ISSUES AND ALWAYS MENTIONED A PROBLEM WITH THE REAR HATCH NOT ALWAYS OPENING BUT THEY COULD NEVER DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. I AM NOW 5000 MILES OUT OF THE BUMPER TO BUMPER WARRANTY AND THE HATCH WILL NOT OPEN. IT USED TO 'HANG UP AND NOT OPEN ON OCCASION, BUT NOW APPEARS TO BE PERMANENT. WHEN I CALLED MY DEALER THEY TOLD ME IT WAS OUT OF WARRANTY AND THEY HAD OTHER CUSTOMERS THAT HAD THE SAME PROBLEM, UNFORTUNATELY, THOSE CUSTOMERS PAID BETWEEN $250.00 AND $700.00 TO HAVE IT FIXED. I CONTACTED FORD DIRECTLY REQUESTING THEY REPAIR THE LIFT GATE SINCE IT HAD BEEN REPORTED WHEN ORIGINALLY UNDER WARRANTY, ONLY TO BE ADVISED TO PAY TO HAVE IT REPAIRED AS IT IS NOW OUT OF WARRANTY, AND SAVE MY RECEIPTS IN CASE THERE EVER IS A RECALL. (I FIND THIS STATEMENT INTERESTING BECAUSE IT MEANS THEY ARE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM). THE ONLY LATCH ON THE LIFT GATE IS A BUTTON ABOVE THE LICENSE PLATE, THERE IS NO LATCH INSIDE THE VEHICLE OR GLOVE COMPARTMENT THAT WOULD ALLOW YOU TO MANUALLY OPEN IT. WITH NO WARNING ENGINE POWER JUST GOES AWAY, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND NO MATTER HOW MUCH THE GAS PEDAL WAS PUSH THERE WAS NO POWER FROM ENGINE, HURRIED AS IT SLOWED DOWN TO THE RIGHT LANE AND WAS ABLE TO EXIT. SHUT OFF ENGINE FOR 5 MINUTES STARTED IT UP AND ALL WAS GOOD. 2ND TIME WAS LIGHT CAME ON AND ENGINE JUST FLUTTERED, SERVICE TECH STATED THAT THE CODES IN COMPUTER WERE THROTTLE ACTUATOR OPEN. *TR

ALL THE EXPOSED METAL COMPONENTS INCLUDING THE TRACKS FOR THE FRONT SEATS, THE UNDERSIDES OF THE SEATS, THE BOLTS HOLDING THE SEATS IN PLACE, AND ANY PIECES OF METAL ON THE INTERIOR OF THE CAR THAT ARE EXPOSED ARE COMPLETELY RUSTED OUT. THE CAR WAS TAKEN INTO THE DEALER AND I WAS TOLD THAT FORD DOES KNOW ABOUT THIS "PROBLEM" AND IT IS BECAUSE ALL OF THE METAL ON THE INSIDE OF THE CAR IS UNTREATED METAL AND THIS WILL RUST. I WAS FURTHER TOLD THAT THIS IS A "COSMETIC" PROBLEM AND BECAUSE THE CAR IS STILL FUNCTIONING THEN THEY ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR FIXING THE PROBLEM. THE INTERIOR OF THE CAR LOOKS LIKE AN OLD, NEGLECTED CAR INSTEAD OF A TWO YEAR OLD PRISTINE LOW MILEAGE CAR THAT IT IS. FORD REFUSES TO FIX THIS PROBLEM UNTIL THE MECHANISMS COMPLETELY RUST OUT AND FALL APART. *TR

I FIRST PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE IN SEP 2010. THE PROBLEM WAS WHEN I WAS STOPPED OR MADE A TURN COASTING SLOWLY, WHEN I ATTEMPTED TO ACCELERATE THE ENGINE DID NOT KICK IN FOR A SECOND OR TWO. WHEN IT DID IT JERKED HARD AND FELT LIKE IT SLAMMED INTO GEAR. THE DEALER COULD NEVER ID THE PROBLEM AND PUT IT OFF AS NORMAL. THEN VERY RECENTLY I HAVE HAD THE VEHICLE NOT RESPOND TO THE GAS PEDAL. IT KEEPS THE RPM'S AT AN IDLING LEVEL BUT DOES NOT RESPOND TO THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL-LIKE YOU PUT IT IN NEUTRAL. THIS HAS HAPPENED TWICE NOW. WHEN I SHUT THE ENGINE OFF AND RESTART IT APPEARS TO SELF CORRECT. THIS HAPPENS WHILE I'M DRIVING SLOWLY ONCE AND AGAIN WHEN I WAS AT A STOP AND TRIED TO ACCELERATE. I HAVE NOT YET TAKEN TO A DEALER YET. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 FORD ESCAPE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE FAILED TO ACCELERATE FROM A COMPLETE STOP. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A DEALER AND THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 22,741 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 22,800.
THIS IS TO REPORT A RECENT ISSUE WITH MY 2009 FORD ESCAPE. I WAS DRIVING 65 - 70 MPH WHEN SUDDENLY MY ACCELERATOR DIED. IT IS LIKE LOSING THE BRAKES BUT THE OPPOSITE. PRESSING THE ACCELERATOR DOES NOT DO ANYTHING AND YOU HAVE TO GO ON THE SIDE FOR EMERGENCY STOP. THIS IS A SAFETY CONCERN GIVEN THAT IT IS A POSSIBLE CAUSE OF A CRASH WITH ANY VEHICLE AROUND YOU AT THE TIME OF SUDDENLY LOSING YOUR SPEED IN A HIGHWAY. THE DASH SHOWED A WRENCH LIGHT, WHICH TELLS ME TO BRING THE CAR TO DEALER. THE DEALER ON THE OTHER HAND WILL NOT FIX IT BECAUSE THEY CANNOT FIND A SERVICE CODE FROM COMPUTER. IT HAPPENED 4 TIMES AND I HAVE TO BRING THE CAR THE 2ND TIME, THEN THEY REPLACED THE THROTTLE BODY EVEN WITHOUT GETTING A SERVICE CODE. SO FAR NO REPEAT OF THE PROBLEM. BUT I THINK FORD SHOULD INVESTIGATE THIS FOR RECALL ISSUE AND FOR SAFETY REASON SINCE I SEE SIMILAR DISCUSSIONS FROM OTHER CUSTOMERS IN THE WEB. *TR
I WAS DRIVING AT 60 MPH UP THE HILL AND WAS TRYING TO PASS A VEHICLE. I TRIED TO INCREASE THE SPEED TO 70 MPH AND THERE WAS SUDDEN SHIFT OF GEARS; IT WENT FROM HIGH TO LOW AND THEN HIGH AGAIN. I FELT SUDDEN JERK AND THE POWERTRAIN LIGHT CAME ON. THIS THING HAPPENED ONCE MORE AFTER THAT INCIDENT. I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND IT HAS BEEN THERE FOR LAST 4 DAYS. THE LATEST I WAS INFORMED IS THAT, THEY WILL REPLACE IT. THE REASON I AM WRITING THIS IS THAT, THIS IS NOT ONE SPORADIC ISSUE. I KNOW AT LEAST 2 PERSONS WHO HAD THE SAME ISSUE WITH 2009 ESCAPES. FORTUNATELY FOR ME, THE TRANSMISSION DID NOT DIE, BUT FOR THEM, IT DIED ON THE FREEWAYS. NOT A VERY SAFE SITUATION TO BE IN. THANKS FOR READING. *KB
FALL OF 2011, I NOTICED THAT MY GAS PEDAL WAS NOT ALWAYS RESPONSIVE. COMING OFF A STOP OR LOW SPEEDS, THE GAS PEDAL WOULD NOT RESPOND UNTIL AFTER I HAD PUMPED IT AND PRESSED IT NEARLY TO THE FLOOR, THEN MY ESCAPE WOULD TAKE OFF, SQUEALING TIRES AND ALL. I NOTICED IT A COUPLE TIMES ON THE HIGHWAY AS WELL, SLOWING FOR A CURVE AND THEN UNABLE TO PROMPTLY ACCELERATE COMING OUT OF THE CURVE. THEN ONE DAY I WAS ON THE HIGHWAY AND THE GAS PEDAL WAS COMPLETELY UNRESPONSIVE, AND MY CAR JUST COMPLETELY SHUT OFF. THIS WAS REALLY BOTHERING ME BECAUSE THERE WERE MULTIPLE TIMES I FELT LIKE I WAS GOING TO GET HIT WHEN I COULDN'T ACCELERATE OUT OF AN INTERSECTION. I TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK TO HASTINGS FORD, AND AFTER MULTIPLE APPOINTMENTS AND KEEPING MY VEHICLE FOR SEVERAL DAYS, THEY WERE UNABLE TO CONFIRM OR REPAIR ANYTHING. I KEPT DRIVING IT FOR A WHILE, THE SAME ISSUES STILL HAPPENING, AND THEN AFTER THE SECOND TIME THE CAR SHUT OFF ON THE HIGHWAY, AND AFTER CONSULTING A RELATIVE WHO IS A FORMER FORD MECHANIC, I BROUGHT IT TO ANOTHER DEALERSHIP. THEY KEPT THE CAR THE MAX NUMBER OF DAYS THEY WERE ALLOWED TO WITHOUT REPAIRING ANYTHING, AND FOUND ON THE LAST DAY THAT IT WAS A FAULTY THROTTLE BODY. THE REPLACED THE THROTTLE BODY BUT THE ISSUE STILL LINGERS. AND I ALSO FEEL A SHORT VIBRATION IN THE PEDAL NEARLY EVERY TIME I ACCELERATE FROM A SLOW OR STOP. I STILL DO NOT FEEL THE ISSUE IS FULLY RESOLVED. I STILL CONSIDER MY THROTTLE BODY TO BE DEFECTIVE.
