The contact owns a 2010 Ford Escape. The contact stated while the vehicle was parked, the front driver’s side and passenger’s side windows and the driver’s and passenger’s side rear windows had rolled down while the vehicle was turned off. No warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer and the contact was informed that the cables on the window regulators were fractured and the regulator and motor assembly needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failures reoccurred. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact the vehicle was not under recall and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was 82,703.
I DROVE A SHORT DISTANCE TO A NEARBY PARK, PARKED THE VEHICLE, TOOK MY DOG OUT OF THE BACK, AND CLOSED THE THE REAR LIFTGATE/HATCHBACK IN A NORMAL FASHION. WE WERE JUST WALKING AWAY FROM THE CAR WHEN THE REAR WINDOW EXPLODED. IT WAS A LOUD EXPLOSION WITH FLYING GLASS. THE WHOLE WINDOW BLEW OUT. IT WAS SO EXTREME THAT OTHER PEOPLE IN THE PARKING LOT JUMPED OUT OF THEIR CARS IN ALARM AND CAME OVER TO SEE WHAT HAD HAPPENED. NOTHING HAD HIT THE WINDOW. NOTHING WAS TOUCHING THE WINDOW. THE TEMPERATURE WAS NOT EXTREME--COOL AND DAMP BUT NOT COLD. THERE WAS NO APPARENT CAUSE FOR THIS AND IT WAS VERY DANGEROUS BECAUSE OF THE FLYING GLASS. IF IT HAD HAPPENED SECONDS EARLIER I COULD HAVE BEEN INJURED OR MY PET COULD HAVE BEEN INJURED, OR BOTH. I NOTE THAT I HAD PUSHED THE REAR DEFROST BUTTON WHILE DRIVING TO CLEAR UP SOME FOGGING BECAUSE THE WEATHER WAS DAMP AND THE BIG DOG WAS BACK THERE, BUT THAT WAS NORMAL USE.

THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THERE WERE NO RECALLS ON THE VEHICLE FOR THE FAILURE THAT WAS EXPERIENCED. THE CONTACT WAS REFERRED TO NHTSA FOR ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 190,000.
REAR WINDOW SHATTERED WHEN I CLOSED THE LIFTGATE WHILE IT WAS SITTING IN MY DRIVEWAY! WASN'T SHUT HARD, ACTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO SLAM ONE OF THESE LIFGATES. THERE WERE NO OBSTRUCTIONS TO MAKE CONTACT WITH THE GLASS.

ALSO, THE AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM NEEDED TO BE RECHARGED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO WEST HILL FORD WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE RECEIVER DRYER NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND INFORMED THE CONTACT TO CALL NHTSA. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 133,000. THE VIN WAS NOT PROVIDED.
THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED IN A DRIVEWAY ON A FAIRLY COLD DAY (TEMPERATURES IN THE LOW 30S). AFTER LOADING THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE AND UPON CLOSING THE LIFTGATE, THE REAR WINDOW SHATTERED. PRIOR TO THIS HAPPENING, THERE WERE NO SIGNS OF A CHIPPED/DAMAGED WINDOW. THE LIFTGATE WAS NOT SLAMMED HARDER THAN USUAL AND THERE WERE NO ITEMS BLOCKING IT FROM CLOSING.
WHILE SHUTTING MY REAR HATCH AFTER REMOVING MY RECYCLING, THE REAR WINDOW EXPLODED. THERE WAS NO CONTACT TO THE WINDOW AND IT HADN'T BEEN OPENED. THERE'S NO EXPLANATION AS TO WHY THE WINDOW WOULD JUST EXPLODE ON ITS OWN.

THE REAR WINDOW OF THE CAR SUDDENLY EXPLODED. I CLOSED THE TAILGATE, AND A MOMENT LATER, THE REAR WINDOW EXPLODED WITHOUT PROVOCATION. MORE OF THE SHATTERED GLASS WENT INTO THE CAR THAN WENT OUTSIDE IT. IT DID NOT INJURE ME, FORTUNATELY, BUT HUNDREDS OF SHARDS OF GLASS WENT EVERYWHERE. THE MOST RIDICULOUS THING WAS THAT THERE WAS NO SEEMING CAUSE. NOTHING WAS TOUCHING THE WINDOW. THE TEMPERATURE WAS CHILLY BUT MODERATE (40'S). THERE WAS NO INDICATION THAT ANYTHING WAS AMISS; THE WINDOW JUST EXPLODED. LOOKING ONLINE, IT SEEMS THAT THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN REPORTED IN 2010 AND SOME 2011 FORD ESCAPES, AND THERE WAS EVEN AN INCONCLUSIVE INVESTIGATION IN 2011 BY THE NTSB. BUT AT THIS POINT, THERE IS NO RECALL ON THE WINDOW. *TR

MY CAR WAS PARKED IN FRONT OF A FRIENDS HOUSE AND WE WERE UNLOADING BAGS FROM THE TRUNK. A FRIEND CLOSED THE TRUNK (NOT JUST THE WINDOW, THE ENTIRE DOOR) WHEN THE BACK WINDSHIELD EXPLODED SHOOTING SHARDS OF GLASS ALL OVER THE GROUND, MY CAR AND THE PEOPLE STANDING NEARBY. NO ONE WAS SERIOUSLY INJURED THANK GOODNESS BUT WE WERE ALL SHOCKED. THE DOOR WAS CLOSED IN A NORMAL MATTER BUT IT SOUNDED LIKE A GUN HAD BEEN SHOT INTO THE WINDOW WHEN IT HAPPENED. WE HAD NO IDEA WHAT HAD JUST OCCURRED BUT AFTER LOOKING INTO IT MYSELF, MANY OTHER FORD ESCAPE OWNERS SEEM TO HAVE HAD THE SAME ISSUE WITH THEIR WINDOWS EXPLODING FOR NO APPARENT REASON. THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE AS WELL AS AN INCONVENIENCE. WHAT IF SOMEONE HAD BEEN SITTING IN THE BACK SEAT OR MY DOG HAD BEEN IN THE TRUNK WHERE SHE OFTEN SITS? THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN SEVERELY CUT BY THE FLYING GLASS OR WORSE. FORD IS A LARGE COMPANY AND FOR THE MOST PART HAS A GOOD REPUTATION. WHY WOULD THEY ALLOW AN ISSUE THAT HAS BEEN GOING ON SINCE 2005 GO ON LIKE THIS WITH NO APOLOGY OR RECALL? IT IS SAD THAT LARGE COMPANIES TAKE ADVANTAGE OF CUSTOMERS AND ALLOW THEM TO PAY EXORBITANT FEES FOR A MISTAKE ON THEIR END. SHAME ON YOU FORD. *TR
