NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2011 Ford Escape. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
The car started shutting off when putting gas and all the ABS lights started turning on. Then it escalated to the car shutting off when pressing the brakes. Now it shuts off randomly never while driving at higher speeds. I was driving the vehicle on the highway and it just shut off and I almost crashed onto the side of the highway because the steering wheel was not working. Thankfully I was able to meet be it a bit and avoid an accident but it happened a few times. Found that some vehicles like mine have some recalls and an extended warranty thing on file and when speaking with a rep at the Lincoln/Ford, she agreed that that what I was experiencing had to do with those, but the car dealerships in my area are not wanting to take responsibility and repair my vehicle which at this point is a public safety hazard not only for my family and me but anyone on the road around me. I can't work or take the car anywhere because of this issue and the carelessness and complete disregard from Ford reps is appalling.
The contact owns a 2011 Ford Escape. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 15 MPH, the steering wheel was difficult to turn. The vehicle operated normally after a restart. The dealer was contacted but no diagnostic test was performed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 144,000. Power steering failed twice in November 2021. Diagnostic test in January 2022 by McGovern Ford dealer states: "replace steering column due to internal failure," same failure as covered by Ford recall which does not include my vehicle but should! Recall was for Ford 2011 Escapes built in Kansas City up to Sept. 11, 2010; my car was built in KC in Dec. 2010.
While driving at slow speeds, my Escape has lost power steering. This has happened mostly in parking lots. Today it happened when I pulled out of the parking lot and I almost got hit. I looked up the problem and read about the recall. I entered my VIN and it showed that I have 0 unfixed recalls. If this was not one on the recall list, shame on FORD because it needs to be fixed. If it was on the recall list and was"fixed," the solution was incorrect and needs to be fixed.
The contact's son owns a 2011 Ford Escape. The contact stated after the vehicle was serviced for front brakes at an independent mechanic; while driving 35 MPH, the steering wheel became difficult to turn. The contact stated that the traction control warning light was illuminated. The contact parked on the side of the road and restarted the vehicle. The contact stated she depressed the traction control button and was able to regain control of the steering wheel. The contact took the vehicle to an independent mechanic and associated the failure with NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V284000 (Steering) however, the VIN was not included. The contact called the local dealer and made them aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired but was pending repairs. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 111,982.
The contact owns a 2011 Ford Escape. The contact stated that while driving at 40 MPH, the power steering failed, and the steering wheel was stiff while steering the vehicle. The contact had to manually steer the vehicle to the dealer. The dealer diagnosed the vehicle with electric power steering failure. The vehicle was not repaired and remained at the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to NHTSA. The failure mileage was approximately 160,000.
My power steering went out as I was driving at a slow rate. I managed to get it back home. I looked up the recalls for my vehicle and it stated any 2011 Ford Escapes made in Kansas City was issued a recall. My vehicle was made in that city during that time. I contacted Ford and they stated my vehicle doesn't apply to that recall. I was not aware of the recall because I did not own the vehicle when it was issued. The affected Escapes that were built from August 18, 2006 through September 11, 2010 at the Kansas City Assembly Plant. The contact's significant other owns a 2011 Ford Escape. The contact had taken the vehicle to an independent mechanic where he was informed that the front passenger’s side subframe was severely corroded. The independent mechanic informed him to no longer drive the vehicle due to the failure. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer had been notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 75,000.
The contact owned a 2011 Ford Escape. The contact stated while driving at 35-40 MPH, the vehicle rolled over and crashed into a residence yard. The air bags did not deploy. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact was knocked unconscious and was transported from the vehicle to the hospital with the assistance of emergency units. A police vehicle was filed. The contact sustained fractured vertebrae at the base of the neck, and several lacerations on the buttocks and face. The vehicle was towed to a tow lot, where it was totaled. The dealer was notified of the failure. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 148,000.
Our escape failed Pennsylvania state inspection due to the front subframe (engine cradle) rusting and cracking at the attachment points with the control arms. Our mechanic invited us to come into his garage and inspect the problem. Upon our personal inspection to the problem we noticed holes, cracks and bending at and near these joints. Our mechanic told us that this problem is a common occurance on the Ford escapes. This item was the first thing he checked in the inspection process. My wife had new tires put on in April. also new control arms were put on to get it lined up at another shop, so apparently they were bad at that time. I checked with one Ford dealer and they said there was no recall for this issue. My wife contacted the Ford dealer where we bought the vehicle and found out the part (subframe) was on back order for weeks. Also both Ford dealers appear to farm out this type of repairs to body shops. After reviewing this issue on line and to find a path forward for repairs I started to find out the extent of the issue with the Ford Escape front frame problems. I did see where a fix to the frame for earlier Escapes was approved for ford to just put a bar from one side of the frame to the other and we’re drilling and attaching to corroded material that should not have been allowed. I feel Ford should be held accountable for the proper repairs to our vehicle as well as the many others and not just try to cover up the fact that this is a major defect in the escapes. The major damage is to the right side frame area of our vehicle but the left side is breaking apart also. The left axil to transmission seal is leaking most likely due to the right side frame bending. We were fortunate in that we did find this before the wheel fell off and someone didn’t get hurt or worse. This repair will most likely be expensive. The part involved is a major structural part to the vehicle. The Frame that holds it together!
When I entered elementary street in Lousville CO, to pick up my three grandchildren, the steering got so hard that I couldn't maneuver between so many cars, I couldn't turn, I was very scared if children started to come out, I got to the parking and parking badly, I called for help, to pick up children, and a man said turn it on again, it will work, my brother took the car to my house, and according to him it worked, I was so scared, that I will not drive it anymore, until I fix it , mechanic said the electric power steering should be changed, in the Ford, they gave a budget for a spare part, I am inquiring about "Recalls" and it says my car has zero, but there is one on # 14S05 and I want to know why this does not apply to me car, can you please help me?
Airbag light on/ flashing. Shop says "passenger side seat belt retractor assembly" needs replaced. I switched it with a known working part, didn't fix the issue. Upon further research I found that it is a known issue. THIS IS A SOFTWARE PROBLEM. *RM I have contacted both local dealerships, as well as Ford corporate. The remedy they all 3 offered: Take it in for diagnostics (I'm already fully aware of the issue) which will cost me around $300, then they will tell me if there's even a possibly solution. They were completely unwilling to tell me if they could fix the software issue without first paying for their diagnostic service, even though it's a known and recorded issue, with the NHTSA ID Number: 10038965 as well as the Manufacturer Communication Number: SIS-21841. Upon researching complaints, I have found that I am by far not the only person who has this exact issue. Note: "date of incident" is when I purchased the vehicle, mileage is the mileage at the time of purchase, it has had the light on since before that date and mileage. I tried to resolve this issue then, and recently have been trying again, in hopes that there has been a fix found finally, to no avail. My 2011 Ford Escape Hybrid lost all braking when the brake peddle went to the floor while in the electronic mode on the battery not with the motor running. The internet has hundreds of ford escape with the same problem. My Ford dealer is not sure what is wrong. Can you please start an investigation to figure out how to fix this problem. I hit my own fence on the driveway after starting the car. Driver seat not function properly the motor operating Has fail
Vehicle lost power steering several times almost caused an accident. When car is restarted it will work again. Ford recalled the power steering control module for some ford escapes of my year yet my vehicle is not included in that recall and from reading forms a lot of other ford escapes are not being covered by this recall. Its expensive to fix and obviously this has been an ongoing safety issue with Ford so what do I do? Keep driving and pray I don't get in an accident? Someone needs to sue Ford.
The contact owns a 2011 Ford Escape. The contact stated while driving 25 mph, the steering wheel became difficult to turn. Additionally, the vehicle loss motive power. The vehicle was restarted and normal functionality returned. There was no warning light illuminated. Upon investigation, the contact associated the failure with NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V284000 (Steering) however, the VIN was not included. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The contact was informed that the VIN was not included in the recall. The failure mileage was approximately 147,000.
Vehicle stalled while driving. Was able to pull into a parking lot. Car died and would not start and stay running. Acted as if fuel was not getting to engine. This happened approximately 1 month ago. I had car repaired. A relay was thought to be bad in the fuel supply system. Today the same thing occurs, car stalls and dies in few minutes. Again was able to get into a parking lot before it went completely dead. After stopping car starts up but then stumbles and dies in less than a few seconds. Sounds like it is not getting fuel.
We purchased this car for our youngest son as his first car, he was driving it and complained that periodically it would become very difficult to steer. I would test the car and found it to be operating normally and would check it for the next several weeks with no issues, at this time I wasn't sure what me son was describing. As time went on he described several occasions in which he nearly avoided an accident due to the steering issues. My wife and I began to worry if there was really something wrong with the car, I began to check it more frequently and found that periodically it would lose power steering in the middle of driving from point A to B, this created very difficult driving conditions. We then found through online research that FORD has several issues with the power steering on this vehicle but for some reason our VIN# is not on the recall list. (Recall #14S05) We would like our VIN# to be added to the list of recalled vehicles due to the sheer danger involved with this issue and that it makes sense with the recalled described issues. Once we had our mechanic review the diagnostic codes and report that the system has a defective torque sensor and/or steering column with an extreme parts and labor cost it was decided to move forward with this letter to explain our situation. We currently have a vehicle in which we cannot drive nor repair, we also cannot afford to get it repaired. Please help... have our vehicle added to the recall list. Thank you
The contact owns a 2011 Ford Escape. The contact stated that while driving 50 mph, the electric power steering failed to operate as designed. The steering wheel started shaking and became difficult to turn. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The failure occurred intermittently. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and was diagnosed as a torque sensor and power steering failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to the dealer for assistance. The manufacturer then referred the contact to NHTSA to file a complaint. The contact was relating the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V284000 (Steering). The failure mileage was 208,587.
2011 Ford Escape AWD- passenger side brake issue- after driving and brake/rotor getting hot making the rim even feel hot. My car vibrates when driving down the street because of this problem. It also has very poor stopping and after stop vehicle doesn’t like to move until I hit the gas pedal. I have very poor gas mileage because something is hanging up ( passenger side only ) THIS IS DANGEROUS and no one wants to do a recall- I’ve been having problems since 2020 we have replaced caliper/rotor/brake pads and the rubber brake hose fixes the problem for about 3-4 months then comes back ( I called a FORD DEALER and they no about the issues I’m getting where I don’t feel safe in my own vehicle and FORD doesn’t want to do NOTHING about it. Guess when someone gets hurt/death they will have a law suit on their hands because they know about the problem with the brakes

LOST TOTAL CONTROL OF POWER STEERING AND ALMOST CRASHED. I NOTICED RECALL 14S05 FOR POWER STEERING CONTROL MODULE. IT ONLY COVERS CARS BUILT BETWEEN 2008 AND SEPT 11,2010. MY VEHICLE WAS BUILT OCTOBER 2010 AT SAME PLANT. HOW SURE CAN I BE THAT MY VEHICLE WAS NOT BUILT WITH DEFECTIVE PART. THE COST TO REPLACE THE POWER STEERING CONTROL MODULE IS AMOST $2200. MY CAR IS AT THE FORD DEALER SHIP AT THIS MOMENT. I REACHED OUT TO FORD CUSTOMER RELATIONS, BUT NO SUCH LUCK. I HAPPEN TO OWN 6 FORDS AT T HE MOMENT AND HAVE PURCHASED NOTHING BUT FORDS FOR 20 YEARS.THIS ISSUE COULD HAVE GOTTEN ME KILLED.
1.) Front suspension cradle system causing the steering wheel to cocked to one side is what failed and pictures have been uploaded for inspection. 2.) This could have been a lot worst had this happened going down the freeway as my wife and I travel a lot. 3.) Not that I am aware of 4.) No it was only inspected by the Brown Motors Dealership 5.) There were no warning lamps before the incident happened.

THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 132,000.
AT 65 MPH ON HIGHWAY I LOST STEERING CONTROL, NO MOVEMENT OF STEERING WOULD CHANGE THE COURSE OF THE CAR

I HIT A BUMP IN THE ROAD AND WHEEL ON PASSENGER SIDE OF VEHICLE WHEN UP INTO WHEEL WELL. ALMOST HIT ONCOMING TRAFFIC WHEN I LOST ALL STEERING. I TOOK IT TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP VIA TOW TRUCK AND WAS TOLD THAT THE FRONT SUBFRAME WAS COMPLETELY ROTTEN AT 87,000 MILES DRIVER SIDE IS NOT FAR FROM BREAKING I WAS TOLD REPAIRS WOULD COST AS MUCH AS THE VEHICLE IS WORTH
DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE WHILE DRIVING 65MPH AND LOST POWER STEERING, (TRACTION CONTROL LED CAME ON) AND RIGHT TURN SIGNAL QUIT WORKING ALL TOGETHER - HAD TO HOLD IT TO PULL OFF THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. I HAVE ALREADY FIXED THIS ISSUE BEFORE, 4 YEARS AGO, FOR $2000. THEY QUOTED ME $2400 AGAIN, EVEN THOUGH THERE SEEMS TO BE A RECALL FOR THIS ISSUE WITH FORD ESCAPES (14S05), JUST NOT FOR MY VIN.
THE POWER STEERING ASSIST FAILED ON MY 2011 FORD ESCAPE. STATIONARY WHEN HAPPENED. SO, FRUSTRATED THAT I CANT STEER IT AND HAVE TWO KIDS I NEED TO TOTE AROUND BUT ITS VERY UNSAFE AND I CANT DRIVE IT WITH MY KIDS IN THE CAR FOR SAFETY CONCERNS. ALSO MY FUEL INTAKE FAILED AND A WARNING LIGHT IS ON FOR IT. I READ THAT BOTH OF THESE EXACT ISSUES HAVE BEEN RECALLED ON THIS MODEL. PLEASE HELP.
MY POWER STEERING ASSIST LIGHT IS ON AND I CAN NOT STEER MY VEHICLE. I GOT IN TO TAKE MY KIDS OUT AND I COULD NOT STEER. ITS TOO UNSAFE TO DRIVE, AND I READ THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH FORD UNDER STEERING ISSUE COMPLAINTS. IF MY VEHICLE IS COVERED TO BE REPAIRED UNDER A RECALL I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW THE NEXT STEP. ITS AROUND $1000 TO FIX AND I CAN NOT AFFORD THIS.
I HAVE CALLED FORD MANY TIMES, AS I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM ALL THE TIME, IT SHOWS THAT MY CAR HAS AN EVAPORATIVE EMISSION SYSTEM LEAK CODE P0457. THIS IS THE 4TH TIME THAT SHOWS THE SAME PROBLEM EVEN AFTER 'FIXING'. FORD ESCAPE HAD THIS RECALL IN 2016 BUT FOR SOME REASON I WAS NOT SENT A NOTICE.
WHILE DRIVING UPHILL ON THE ENTRANCE TO MY COLLEGE CAMPUS THE STEERING WHEEL FROZE AND I LOST ABILITY TO STEER THE VEHICLE. IT WAS VERY DIFFICULT TO TURN THE WHEEL TO GET IT INTO A PARKING SPOT. THANKFULLY I WASN'T ON THE GARDEN STATE PKWY WHEN THIS HAPPENED. I NEEDED TO HAVE IT TOWED BECAUSE IT WAS UNDRIVEABLE TO MY REPAIR SHOP FROM MY SCHOOL CAMPUS IN MONTCLAIR, NJ TO MONROE TWP, NJ. MY MECHANIC DID A DIAGNOSTIC AND ADVISED THERE WAS A RECALL (NHTSA CAMPAIGN 14V28400) AND FORD'S RECALL NUMBER 14S05. AFTER CONTACTING THE DEALER ABOUT THE RECALL I WAS ADVISED THERE WAS NO OPEN RECALL. MY LOCAL REPAIR SHOP ADVISED TO HAVE THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR DIAGNOSTIC. THEY TOO ADVISED NO RECALL AND ADVISED REPAIRS WILL COST $2700. WHY WOULD A RECALL COME UP ON VEHICLEHISTORY.COM AND SPECIFICALLY STATE 2011 FORD ESCAPE AND THIS NOT BE ELIGIBLE FOR MY VEHIICLE.
I STOPPED BEFORE ENTERING A TRAFFIC CIRCLE. WHEN STARTING AND TURNING RIGHT TO ENTER THE TRAFFIC CIRCLE, MY POWER STEERING SEIZED UP. IT DIDN'T JUST GO DEAD -- IT STARTED VIBRATING AND I COULD FEEL THE MOTOR ACTIVELY RESISTING ANY STEERING MOVEMENT. THERE WAS NO AUDIBLE WARNING AND NO WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATED ON MY DASHBOARD. ALL ELECTRONICS SEEMED TO OPERATE NORMALLY. WHEN I TURNED MY IGNITION OFF AND ON AGAIN, STEERING RETURNED TO NORMAL. THIS IS A LIFE-THREATENING SAFETY ISSUE. I HAVE NOT RECEIVED ANY RECALL NOTICES RELATED TO STEERING.

THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN AND THE CONTACT ATTEMPTED TO MAKE A LEFT TURN AND THE VEHICLE LOSS POWER STEERING ASSIST. THE VEHICLE WAS RESTARTED HOWEVER, THE FAILURE PERSISTED. THERE WAS NO WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED NOR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 132,000.
ALL BRAKE/ABS WARNING LIGHTS COME ON AND BRAKE PEDAL GOES ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR ON STARTUP BRAKE SYSTEM FAILURE OCCURS INTERMITTENTLY, AND REPEATEDLY AT ONLY 50K MILES. RESTARTING THE CAR RESULTS IN SOME BRAKE FUNCTION WITH ABS AND CHECK BRAKE WARNINGS. MECHANIC HAS READ THE CODES WHICH INCLUDE EVERY PART OF THE BRAKE SYSTEM. EVERY. SINGLE. PART.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 FORD ESCAPE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT AT VEHICLE START-UP, THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED AND WOULD NOT TURN. THE FRONT SUBFRAME IS RUSTED OUT AND WILL NOT PASS THE PA STATE INSPECTION. THE CAR HAS UNDERCARRIAGE CORROSION PROBLEMS. WE JUST REPLACED THE MUFFLER PIPE FOR SIMILAR ISSUES LAST FALL. THEY CAR HAS BEEN DRIVING IN PA FOR LAST 9 YEARS AND SHOULD NOT BE HAVING THESE ISSUES. THE CAR HAS 89000 MILES. GODSHALLS AUTOMOTIVE CAN GET A USED PART AND LABOR TO FIX WILL BE $1100. THIS SHOULD BE LOOK AT AS A RECALL.
The contact owns a 2011 Ford Escape. The contact stated that while driving into a parking area at a slow speed, the vehicle abruptly lost electric power steering assist. After restarting the vehicle, the vehicle returned to normal functionality; however, the failure recurred and had since become a regular failure. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic to be diagnosed or repaired. After investigation, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V284000 (Steering) however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 95,000.
THE PROBLEM IS BRAKE LOSS IN REVERSE. IT HAPPENS INTERMITTENTLY AND INFREQUENTLY OVER THE PAST 7 YEARS. USUALLY WHEN BACKING OUT OF MY GARAGE AND CANNOT STOP IMMEDIATELY. THE PEDAL WILL BE ROCK HARD WHEN THIS HAPPENS AND AFTER A COUPLE OF SECONDS WILL DEPRESS AND BRAKES BACK TO NORMAL. SUMMER OR WINTER OR IN THE GARAGE THIS HAPPENS. I BROUGHT IT TO TWO DEALERSHIPS BUT THEY CANNOT FIND PROBLEM AS IT IS SO INTERMITTENT. IT SEEMS LIKE THE POWER ASSIST IS COMPLETELY GONE.
WHEN THE VEHICLE IS ROLLING, THE RIGHT TIRE LOCKS UP AND STARTS SMOKING, THIS HAPPENS ALL THE TIME. MECHANIC CANNOT FIND IT TO FIX IT IF FIXABLE AND NOT A RECALL? I AM DRIVING CITY STREETS (IN VIRGINIA-SUBURBIA.
WHILE MAKING A RIGHT HAND TURN AT AN INTERSECTION PULLING OUT FROM A STOP SIGN. I WAS TURNING FROM A CITY STREET ONTO A HIGHWAY. THE POWER STEERING STOPPED WORKING MAKING THE VEHICLE HARD TO STEER AND ALMOST HITTING A STONE BARRIER BETWEEN THE LANES. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN PARKED AND TURNED OFF, AND LATER STARTED AND THE POWER STEERING HAD RETURNED. THIS WAS THE SECOND TIME THE POWER STEERING WAS LOST. THE FIRST TIME WAS ON A CITY STREET WHILE PULLING OUT FROM A PARKING SPOT AND VEHICLE WAS THEN PARKED. A SHORT TIME LATER THE VEHICLE WAS STARTED AND THE POWER STEERING HAD RETURNED. THIS HAS NOW HAPPENED A THIRD TIME WHILE BACKING OUT OF A PARKING SPOT THE POWER STEERING STOPPED WORKING , THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED AND SHUT OFF. IT WAS THEN LATER STARTED AND THE POWER STEERING HAD RETURNED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL MECHANIC WHO HOOKED THE VEHICLE TO A CODE SCANNER AND FOUND THE CODE FOR THE POWER STEERING TORQUE SENSOR HAD MALFUNCTIONED.
THE POWER STEERING HAS FAILED MULTIPLE TIMES. IT SEEMS TO HAPPEN WHENEVER I TAKE A HEAVY U-TURN. THE POWER STEERING GOES OUT AND AI HAVE NO CONTROL OVER MY STEERING. ACCORDING TO DEALERSHIPS THE POWER STEERING IS COMPUTERIZED, SO IS QUITE COSTLY TO FIX. BUT THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY HAZARD WHEN DRIVING. THIS HAS HAPPENED ON CITY STREETS ONLY WHEN MAKING U-TURNS.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 FORD ESCAPE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE TRACTION CONTROL WARNING LIGHT AND AN UNKNOWN WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE POWER STEERING CONTROL MODULE WAS FAULTY AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVABLE HOWEVER, THE CONTACT DID NOT FEEL SAFE DRIVING THE VEHICLE. A DEALER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE CONTACT REFERENCED NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V284000 (STEERING) AS A POSSIBLE SOLUTION TO THE FAILURE HOWEVER, THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE APPROXIMATELY 50,000.
MY POWER STEERING ASSIST IS LOST ON MY 2011 FORD ESCAPE. 915,000 OTHER FORDS HAVE HAD THIS ISSUE AND FORD HAS ALLOWED THIS RECALL. MY VIN# DOES NOT MATCH WITH THE CARS THAT FORD ALLOWS RECALLED. FORD TELLS ME THAT MY CAR WAS MFG. IN JUNE 2011 SO THIS POWER STEERING ASSIST WILL NOT HAPPEN. AND YET I HAD MY CAR TOWED BECAUSE MY POWER STEERING ASSIST WAS NOT WORKING. I AM AFRAID OF DRIVING MY CAR AS THIS ISSUE CREATES A DANGEROUS DRIVING SITUATION.
WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE, THE POWER STEERING FAILED. I CONTINUED TO MY DESTINATION USING MANUAL STEERING AND PARKED THE VEHICLE. I COMPLETED MY ERRAND AND WHEN I STARTED THE VEHICLE THE POWER STEERING WAS WORKING. THE FOLLOWING DAY, I DROVE THE VEHICLE TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP WHERE MY WIFE BOUGHT IT TO HAVE IT CHECKED OUT BY THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT AND WAS TOLD THAT THE PROBLEM WAS WITH THE STEERING TORQUE SENSOR AND THAT IT SHOULD BE REPLACED. RATHER THAN REPAIR THE VEHICLE, WE TRADED IT IN FOR A NEW FORD ESCAPE.
WHILE DRIVING, MY POWER STEERING WENT OUT TO WHERE I COULD NOT TURN THE STEERING WHEEL TO TURN A CORNER WHICH ALMOST LEAD TO ME AND MY HUSBAND GETTING HIT BY A SEMI TRUCK. THE CAR HAD BEEN RUNNING AND TURNING JUST FINE UP TO STOPPING AT THE STOP SIGN. ONCE I WENT TO TURN RIGHT, I COULDN'T TURN THE STEERING WHEEL AND WENT STRAIGHT THROUGH THE INTERSECTION INSTEAD WHICH IS WHEN I WAS ALMOST HIT BY A SEMI TRUCK THAT WAS HEADED IN THE OTHER DIRECTION BECAUSE I COULDN'T TURN RIGHT, MY CAR WENT STRAIGHT THE THE INTERSECTION. HAD TO TURN THE CAR OFF SIT FOR A FEW MINUTES, TURN IT BACK ON AND THEN IT WORKED. TOOK IT TO THE AUTO REPAIR SHOP 3 DAYS LATER AND IT HAPPENED AGAIN TO THEM. THE POWER STEERING JUST STOPS WORKING WHILE THE CAR IS ALREADY DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD WHICH IS NOT SAFE AT ALL. THANKFULLY I WAS NOT IN THE HIGHWAY YET. THERE IS A CURRENT RECALL FOR THIS POWER STEERING TORQUE ISSUE AND IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT THE WHOLE POWER STEERING CONTROL MODULE BE REPLACED. WAS TOLD BY FORD THAT THIS IS VIN SPECIFIC. HOWEVER, MY 2011 WAS MANUFACTURED IN KANSAS CITY AND CAME OFF THE MANUFACTURING LINE ON 9/27/2010. RECALL STATES THAT THIS AFFECTED 2011 FORD ESCAPES FROM THE KANSAS CITY PLANT THROUGH 9/16/2010. FORD WOULD NOT TELL ME WHEN THE STEERING COLUMN PORTION OF MY CAR WAS ACTUALLY CONSTRUCTED BEFORE COMING OFF THE LINE ON 9/27/2010 AND COULD NOT VERIFY PARTS THAT WERE USED IN THE STEERING COLUMN MODULE YET THE ISSUE THIS CAR IS HAVING MATCHES EXACTLY WHAT THAT RECALL WAS FOR. I DO THINK THIS RECALL NEEDS TO BE FURTHER EVALUATED AS IT HAS OBVIOUSLY EFFECTED MORE VEHICLES THAN FORD IS WILLING TO ADMIT OR LOOK INTO ESPECIALLY SINCE MY CAR'S MANUFACTURING DATE WAS ONLY 16 DAYS AFTER THE RECALL DATE FROM THE SAME MANUFACTURING PLANT OF KANSAS CITY.
