TL ' THE CONTACT OWNS A 2013 FORD ESCAPE. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 40 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED AND ALL THE INDICATORS ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE FAILED TO RESTART AND WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE RETURN SPRING ON THE BRAKE PEDAL NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED AND THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 12,000. JCC
ON SAT JUNE 7, 2014 I NOTICED THE DRIVERS SIDE AIRBAG LIGHT WAS SOLID YELLOW AND STAYED ON UNTIL I RETURNED HOME THAT EVENING. ON MONDAY JUNE 10TH, I GOT UP AND WENT TO THE STORE AND NOTICED IT WAS OFF. SINCE THEN IT HAS CAME ON AND WENT BACK OFF AT VARIOUS STAGES OF DRIVING, FROM HIGHWAY SPEEDS TO AN IDLE AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT. ALSO, THE PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG LIGHT DOES DO NOT COME ON WHEN MY GRANDDAUGHTER IS SITTING IN THE FRONT SEAT, SHE IS 14 YEARS OLD AND WEIGHS APPROX 90#. I HAVE TAKEN IT TO THE FORD DEALER IN COOKEVILLE TENNESSEE AND THEY KEPT IT OVER NIGHT AND ADVISED ME THAT THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE ISSUE AND NO REPAIRS WERE PERFORMED. THEY HAVE TOLD ME THAT SINCE THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE ISSUE THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO AND THE VEHICLE WAS "SAFE" TO CONTINUE TO DRIVE AS NORMAL. ON THE WAY HOME FROM THE DEALERSHIP, THE DRIVERS SIDE AIR BAG LIGHT CAME BACK ON AND HAS SINCE WENT OFF AND ON SEVERAL TIMES SINCE THEN. I DO HAVE PICTURES THAT ARE TIME AND DATE STAMPED OF EACH SUBSEQUENT INCIDENT AND THE SPEED AND ODOMETER READING AT THE TIME. *TR
ON THE FIRST INCIDENT I WAS SLOWING DOWN TO MAKE A LEFT TURN IN A BUSY INTERSECTION. THE SERVICE ENGINE NOW DEFAULT LIGHT CAME ON AND THE CAR STALLED. I WAS NEARLY KILLED AS CARS HAD TO SWERVE TO GO AROUND ME. THE SECOND AND THIRD INCIDENTS HAPPENED AS I SLOWED DOWN TO MAKE A RIGHT HAND TURN. THE CAR HAS ALSO STALLED AT STOP SIGNS. *TR
2013 FORD ESCAPE. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO VEHICLE CONTINUOUS TO HAVE ISSUES RELATED TO RECALL. *SMD THE CONSUMER STATED THE RADIO WOULD SHUT OFF AND WOULD NOT TURN BACK ON. WHEN IT SHUT OFF, A 911 ERROR MESSAGE APPEARED. THE SPEAKER VOLUME WOULD GET HIGH AND THEN GO LOW. THE CONSUMER ALSO NOTICED, THE ENGINE COOLANT LEVEL DROPPED BELOW THE MINIMUM LEVEL ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS, WHICH RESULTED IN THE ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATING. THE DEALER FOUND A LEAK, WHICH WAS CAUSED BY THE WASHER NOT SEALING PROPERLY. THE CONSUMER STATED PRIOR TO THE RECALL, THERE WERE NO ISSUES WITH COOLANT LOSS.*JB
FOLLOWING SERVICE PERFORMED FOR RECALLS FOR POSSIBLE COOLANT LEAK / ENGINE FIRE, ENGINE FAULT CODES FOR LOW COOLANT BEGAN TO DISPLAY. VISUAL CONFIRMATION OF LOW COOLANT IN RESERVOIR. ADDED COOLANT TO PROPER LEVEL SEVERAL TIMES AT WEEKLY INTERVALS WHILE DRIVING APPROX. 200 MILES PER WEEK. LOSS OF COOLANT WAS NOT AN ISSUE UNTIL THE RECALL SERVICING WAS DONE. THREE OR FOUR SERVICE VISIT ATTEMPTS TO FULLY DIAGNOSE AND RESOLVE HAVE RESULTED A REPLACED WATER PUMP (THAT LEAKED DURING PRESSURE TEST). THIS MOST RECENT LOW COOLANT ENGINE FAULT MESSAGE OCCURRED AFTER FOUR WEEKS POST-NEW WATER PUMP. I AM RETURNING FOR ANOTHER SERVICE VISIT IN AN ATTEMPT TO FULLY AND FINALLY RESOLVE THE ISSUE. *TR
THE CAR STALLS AT LOW SPEEDS, AFTER BRAKING AND THEN TRYING TO ACCELERATE. IT'S HAPPENED AT LEAST 8 TIMES, AND IT'S BEEN TO THE FORD DEALER (VETERANS FORD IN TAMPA) AT LEAST 4 TIMES TO CHECK IT OUT, BUT THE SERVICE DEPT CANNOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. THEY HAVE RUN TESTS, AND CHECKED FOR 'CODES' IN THE ENGINE, BUT NO CODES APPEARED, ALTHOUGH THE LAST TIME, I DROVE IT DIRECTLY TO THE DEALER AFTER IT STALLED. IT ALWAYS RESTARTS, BUT I'M OFTEN IN TRAFFIC AND DANGEROUS SITUATIONS. IT'S VERY SPORADIC, AND THERE IS NO WARNING BEFORE IT STALLS. *TR
MY 2013 FORD ESCAPE STARTED WITH A JOLTING, ROCKING AND ROUGH RIDE. THE ENGINE FAULT SERVICE NOW LIGHT CAME ON. IF YOU TURNED IT OFF AND RESTARTED IT, WOULD BE OK AND LIGHT WOULD NOT COME BACK ON. THIS STARTED AROUND 28,000 MILES. I TOOK TO FORD DEALER AND THEY KEPT FOR A DAY, HOOKED TO COMPUTER AND TOLD ME NOTHING WAS COMING UP AS WRONG. THEY TOOK IT OUT ON THE ROAD AND COULD NOT REPLICATE IT. BUT THEY DID FIX 5 RECALLS ON IT! 4 DAYS LATER WITH THE AIR CONDITIONER ON WHILE MAKING A LEFT TURN ON A BUSY ROAD, THE ENGINE WENT COMPLETELY DEAD. I NEARLY MISSED HAVING A CAR HIT ME BROADSIDE. THEN 5 DAYS LATER AS I WAS MAKING A RIGHT HAND TURN, THE ENGINE ONCE AGAIN COMPLETELY DIED. BY SOME VERY GOOD LUCK THE CAR BEHIND ME WAS ABLE TO GO AROUND ME. I HAD MY SMALL GRANDSON AND GRANDDAUGHTER IN THE BACK SEAT. THEY COULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUSLY INJURED HAD I BEEN REAR ENDED. I CALLED THE FORD DEALER AND WAS TOLD MY THE SERVICE MANAGER WHAT DID I EXPECT THEM TO DO SINCE IT KEEPS TELLING THEM NOTHING IS WRONG WHEN HOOKED TO THE COMPUTER ( IN A VERY SARCASTIC TONE). THEN AGAIN TODAY, THE ENGINE WENT COMPLETELY DEAD COMING OUT OF MY GRANDDAUGHTER SCHOOL IN FRONT OF A SCHOOL BUS!! I THINK FORD IS GOING TO WAIT UNTIL PEOPLE ACTUALLY DIE IN A AN ACCIDENT BEFORE EVEN ATTEMPTING TO TRY TO CORRECT THIS PROBLEM. I AM SO DISTRAUGHT THAT I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO. GM WAITED TO LONG AND LOOK WHAT HAPPENED TO THEM! *TR
CAR STALLED WHILE DRIVING AT 35 MPH WITH NO WARNING, NEARLY CAUSING AN ACCIDENT. *TR
ON 5/31/14, UPON STARTING VEHICLE (2.0 L, SEL), VEHICLE RUNNING ROUGH, SPUTTERING, LURCHING WHEN ACCELERATOR WAS DEPRESSED, ETC. MESSAGE ON DASH SCREEN STATED "ENGINE FAULT - SERVICE NOW". DROVE CAR APPROXIMATELY 8 MILES TO A FORD DEALER I WAS NOT FAMILIAR WITH. TURNED CAR OFF BUT THEN DECIDED TO MOVE CAR. STARTED CAR, ALL ISSUES DISAPPEARED, SO I LEFT AND DROVE CAR 35 MILES TO MY HOME WITH NO ISSUES. DROVE CAR UNTIL 6/20/14 WHEN EXACT SYMPTOMS HAPPENED AGAIN. DROVE CAR WITH SYMPTOMS OCCURRING TO LOCAL FORD DEALER. MECHANIC SUSPECTED COOING SYSTEM PROBLEM, TURNED OFF ENGINE WITHOUT HOOKING UP TO COMPUTER FOR DIAGNOSIS. MINUTES LATER, MECHANIC DECIDED PROBLEM WAS NOT COOLING SYSTEM RELATED SINCE ESCAPE WAS A 2.0 L (COOLING SYSTEM PROBLEMS APPARENTLY OCCUR WITH 1.6 L MODELS), BUT WAS INSTEAD THE MAP SENSOR WHICH WAS REPLACED ON 6/26/14. NEXT DAY (6/27/14) AFTER MAP SENSOR REPLACEMENT, SAME EXACT ISSUES. NO TIME TO TAKE TO A DEALER, SO I SHUT IT OFF AND RESTARTED IT AND ALL SYMPTOMS DISAPPEARED. DROVE REGULARLY UNTIL 7/16/14, WHEN EXACT SYMPTOMS OCCURRED AGAIN. DROVE DIRECTLY TO LOCAL FORD DEALER, LEFT IT RUNNING. THEY HOOKED UP THE DIAGNOSTIC COMPUTER WHILE RUNNING WHICH SHOWED ERROR CODE RELATED TO MAP SENSOR AGAIN. EXPLAINED TO MECHANIC THAT MY RESEARCH HAS INDICATED THAT TSB 13-12-12 MIGHT ADDRESS THE PROBLEM WHICH IS RELATED TO WIRING IN THE "SIGNAL RETURN SPLICES." HE AGREED. MADE APPOINTMENT FOR NEXT DAY, 7/17/14. UPON STARTING ON 7/17/14, SAME SYMPTOMS. TURNED OFF, RESTARTED, SYMPTOMS CLEARED AND I DROVE IT WITH NO ISSUES TO MY LOCAL FORD DEALER. LOCAL DEALER CALLED AND SAID THEY LOOKED AT THE WIRE SPLICES, MADE SOME "ADJUSTMENTS" (NO NEW PARTS) AND THAT VEHICLE IS READY FOR PICK UP. IF THIS OCCURS AGAIN, WHICH I BELIEVE IT WILL, I WILL ASK FOR WIRE HARNESS REPLACEMENT TO THE SIGNAL RETURN(S). DANGEROUS, WELL-DOCUMENTED PROBLEM. *TR
MY WIFE WAS PULLING OUT OF THE PARKING LOT AT WORK WHEN THE VEHICLE SWITCHED TO A "LOW POWER STATE" AS DESCRIBED BY THE DEALER (SPITTING, SPUTTERING SHAKING. BARELY RUNNING AS DESCRIBED BY MY WIFE) . SHE HAD GET TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD TURN THE CAR OFF THEN BACK ON TO TURN AROUND AND PULL BACK INTO THE LOT. I WENT AND GOT THE CAR. IT RAN OK. AND I CALLED FORD AND MADE AN APPOINTMENT TO GET IN . (4 DAY WAIT OVER HOLIDAY WEEKEND.) OVER THE WEEKEND IT DID IT ONCE MORE. THIS TIME LEAVING A SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT ON. BY THE TIME WE TOOK IT TO THE DEALER IT HAD GONE BACK OFF. THEY FOUND A FAULTY WIRE HARNESS. BUT SINCE THE BUMPER TO BUMPER WARRANTY IS OUT AND IT'S NOT COVERED BY POWER TRAIN. IT COST US $400 FOR THE REPAIR. *TR
AS I WAS SLOWING TO TURN LEFT THE CAR STALLED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE INTERSECTION. AND AGAIN, AS I STOPPED AT THE STOP SIGN, IT STALLED AGAIN. I TOOK THIS CAR INTO THE DEALER ( THIRD TIME) BECAUSE OF THE STALLING ISSUE AND I HAD JUST PICKED IT UP FROM THE DEALER SERVICE DEPARTMENT, (WHO SAID THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING) WHEN THE CAR STALLED A MILE AWAY FROM THE SHOP. IT WAS CLOSING TIME ON A HOLIDAY WEEKEND,WHEN I PICKED IT UP, SO THEY WERE CLOSED BY THE TIME I TURNED AROUND. *TR
1.6L ECOBOOST: SERVICE ENGINE INDICATOR COMES ON. DEALER HAS DETERMINED SEVERAL INSTANCES OF ENGINE MISFIRE. INITIALLY TOO, A MORE URGENT INDICATOR LIGHT CAME ON (AMBER) INDICATING THAT THE COOLANT LEVEL IS LOW. A YET MORE URGENT INDICATOR LIGHT COMES ON (RED) INDICATING THE ENGINE IS OVERHEATING AND THE ENGINE IS REDUCED TO RUNNING ON TWO CYLINDERS. HOWEVER, THIS INDICATION APPEARED ONLY SHORTLY AFTER THE ENGINE WAS STARTED, AND SURELY AT THAT POINT, THE ENGINE WAS FAR FROM OVERHEATING. ON OTHER AND SUBSEQUENT INCIDENCES, ENGINE MISFIRES DURING THE FIRST SECONDS FOLLOWING START-UP. AFTER 3 TO 5 SECONDS, ENGINE USUALLY STOPS MISFIRING. ON A COUPLE OF OCCASIONS, THIS MISFIRE-AT-START-UP EVENT HAS BEEN ACCOMPANIED BY A FAINT ODOR OF ANTIFREEZE. THE MOST RECENT MISFIRE-AT-START-UP EVENT INCLUDED A FAINT SMELL OF SOMETHING/NOT FUEL OR OIL, AND GRAY SMOKE FROM THE EXHAUST. BECAUSE DEALER HAS TESTED THE COOLING SYSTEM (OKAY) AND NO HINT OF COOLANT HAS BEEN FOUND ON THE GROUND OR ENGINE COMPARTMENT, I'M NOW ASSUMING THAT COOLANT IS GETTING INTO ONE OR MORE OF CYLINDERS, EITHER FROM THE ENGINE HEAD OR FROM THE TURBO CHARGER (IT IS WATER-COOLED, I'M TOLD) AND IS THEN COMING OUT OF THE EXHAUST. BOTH TAIL PIPES ARE CARBONED UP. MENTION OF IS MADE ON SEVERAL WEB POSTS AND IS APPARENTLY A COMMON OCCURRENCE WITH ECOBOOST ENGINES?? BASED ON MY VAST (HIGH SCHOOL) KNOWLEDGE OF CHEMISTRY AND THE OXIDATION PROCESS, THAT JUST AIN'T RIGHT. I HAVE ASKED FMC TO REPLACE THE VEHICLE. THEY HAVE THUS FAR DECLINED TO DO SO. *TR
WHILE TRAVELING AT APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH ON MAY 21, 2014 I SUDDENLY HEARD A CHIME AND A MESSAGE APPEARED ON THE DRIVER INFORMATION CENTER ALERTING OF A "STEERING ASSIST FAULT". OUR FORD IS EQUIPPED WITH THE AUTOMATIC PARKING STEERING ASSIST SYSTEM. I THEN FELT THE STEERING LOCK UP AND DRAMATICALLY REDUCE THE ABILITY FOR ME TO STEER THE VEHICLE FROM ONE LANE TO THE OTHER ON THE STRAIGHT AWAY THAT I WAS PRESENTLY ON. THE SENSATION WAS THAT OF TRYING TO DRIVE A VEHICLE THAT COMPLETELY LOST POWER STEERING AND FEEDBACK. AFTER APPROXIMATELY A QUARTER MILE OF EVALUATING THE VEHICLE, I PULLED OVER AND RESTARTED THE CAR, THUS REGAINING NORMAL CONTROL WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT, AND PROCEEDED TO DELIVER THE VEHICLE FOR EVALUATION. THE CAR IS CURRENTLY AT LINDSAY FORD IN SILVER SPRING, MD NOW AND WILL BE EVALUATED 5/22/14. THIS IS AT LEAST THE THIRD TIME I HAVE SEEN THIS FAULT MESSAGE, HOWEVER IT WOULD APPEAR WHEN STARTING THE VEHICLE BUT NEVER ELIMINATE STEERING ABILITY. I BELIEVE THIS VEHICLE TO BE A LEMON IN THE EYES OF THE LAW, I HAVE PREVIOUSLY REQUESTED A BUY BACK FROM FORD BASED ON DISMAL FUEL PERFORMANCE AND OTHER UNRELATED MATTERS. FORD HAS NEGLECTED TO FULLY RESOLVE THOSE MATTERS, AND WITH THIS INCIDENT ON HAND, I AM REQUESTING ANY ASSISTANCE TO ENSURE THAT I OWN A SAFE VEHICLE, BECAUSE MY PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE WITH FORD HAS BEEN UNACCEPTABLE. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2013 FORD ESCAPE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE CHECK ENGINE AND COOLANT INDICATORS ILLUMINATED AND THERE WAS A DRASTIC REDUCTION IN SPEED. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO PULL THE VEHICLE OVER AS IT STALLED. AFTER WAITING A BRIEF MOMENT, THE VEHICLE WAS RESTARTED, BUT WAS NOT ABLE TO BE SAFELY DRIVEN. BOB BELL FORD (7125 RITCHIE HWY, GLEN BURNIE, MD 21061, (410) 766-3600) WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND INDICATED THAT MANUFACTURER RECALL NUMBER: 12S39 AND NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 12V431000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING) WERE ISSUED IN MID 2014. WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE KIT REQUIRED TO SERVICE THE RECALL CAMPAIGN HAD NOT BEEN ADMINISTERED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE INDEPENDENT MECHANIC PROVIDED TECHNICAL DIAGNOSTIC INFORMATION PERTAINING TO WHAT WAS INSPECTED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE INDEPENDENT MECHANIC DID NOT BELIEVE THE REMEDY WAS PROVIDED. THE CONTACT WAS WAITING ON A RESPONSE FROM THE MANUFACTURER TO DETERMINE THE GUIDELINES TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50,000.
2013 FORD ESCAPE AS I BACK OUT OF PARKING LOT, CAR DIES, ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON AND OIL LIGHT APPEARS ALSO. CAR ALSO SHUT DOWN AT BUSY INTERSECTION. TOOK CAR INTO DEALERSHIP NEXT MORNING, STARTED CAR UP AND IT DIED, DID THIS 3 TIMES AND THE FORD SERVICE MAN WITNESSED THIS. THEY HAVE HAD CAR 4 DAYS IN THE SHOP. SHOP FOREMAN HAS DRIVEN CAR HOME TO SEE IF IT CAN BE DUPLICATED AND CAN NOT. THEY SAY WHEN THEY HOOK UP TO COMPUTER NO PROBLEMS REGISTER. THEY JUST CALLED AND SAID I HAVE TO PICK UP THE CAR TODAY, THEY CAN'T KEEP IT ANY LONGER. IF IT HAPPENS AGAIN, TO BRING IT IN. VERY FRUSTRATED. HOPE I DON'T GET HIT AND INJURED!! *TR
I HAVE HAD 2 INCIDENTS WHERE MY POWER STEERING HAS GONE OUT. THE FIRST WAS AT ABOUT 25 MPH AND THE OTHER ABOUT 15-20 MPH. BOTH TIMES I GOT A MESSAGE ACROSS MY INFORMATION SCREEN THAT SAID "STEERING ASSIST FAULT". IT WAS REALLY HARD TO STEER THE VEHICLE I WAS ABLE TO STOP AND TURN OFF THE VEHICLE SINCE I WASN'T ON A BUSY STREET EITHER TIME. WHEN I RESTARTED THE VEHICLE THE MESSAGE WENT AWAY AND POWER STEERING WAS RESTORED AS IF THE COMPUTER JUST NEEDED TO RESTART. *TR
THE "ENGINE FAULT, SERVICE NOW" LIGHT CAME ON AND THE CAR WOULD NOT ACCELERATE. I HAD TO PULL OVER AND HIT OK IN ORDER TO TURN OFF VEHICLE. WHEN I GOT OUT OF THE CAR IT SMELLED LIKE BURNING IN THE ENGINE. AFTER RESEARCHING THIS ONLINE IT IS WORRISOME THAT THIS IS NOT PART OF A RECALL YET. IT SEEMS THERE ARE MANY OF THESE ESCAPES WITH THE SAME ISSUE, SOME CATCHING FIRE. PLEASE ADVISE! *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2013 FORD ESCAPE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE ROLLED BACKWARD AFTER BEING STOPPED ON AN INCLINE. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT BOTH THE ACCELERATOR AND BRAKE PEDAL NEEDED TO DEPRESS IN ORDER TO ENSURE THAT THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT ROLL BACKWARDS. NO WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE FAILURE RECURRED ON A REGULAR BASIS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THERE WAS NO DIAGNOSTIC TEST COMPLETED ON THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 12,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 15,000.
WHILE TURNING AT A SPEED OF APPROXIMATELY 5 MPH THE CAR STALLED CAUSING THE LOSS OF POWER STEERING AND POWER BRAKES. THIS WAS THE THIRD INCIDENT OF THE CAR STALLING. "WILLIAMSBURG FORD AND PREOWNED" SERVICED THE CAR TODAY AND FOUND NO FAULT CODES. CLAIM THAT THEY CAN NOT SERVICE THE CAR WITHOUT FORD'S AUTHORIZATION VIA "RECALL". THIS VEHICLE IS POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS ONCE A STALL OCCURS TO A DRIVER FROM SIDE OR REAR IMPACT. THIS NEEDS ACTION FROM THE NHTSA AND FORD. *TR
RECALL 13V583 FOR THE 1.6L ENG FIRE WAS ACCOMPLISHED 05-12-14.I DROVE THE ESCAPE HOME AND NOTICED THE LOWER LEFT CORNER OF THE TRIP DISPLAY PAGE,THE HOURS DRIVEN WAS REPLACED WITH MPG DISPLAY. DRIVER WAS PROCEEDING DOWN A RESIDENTIAL STREET WHEN THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY VEERED TO THE RIGHT AND HIT SEVERAL PARKED VEHICLES. THE DRIVER COMPLAINED THAT THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NO RESPONSE FROM THE STEERING WHEEL THE SECONDS PRIOR TO IMPACT. ONCE THE VEHICLE WAS PICKED UP BY THE TOW TRUCK AND THE UNDERSIDE OF THE VEHICLE WAS VISIBLE, THE POINT OF FAILURE WAS QUITE APPARENT. THE BALL JOINT REMAINED COMPLETELY INTACT WHILE THE STEERING KNUCKLE VISIBLY BROKE AT THE POINT WHERE IT MEETS THE BALL JOINT. EVERY OTHER ITEM UNDER THE VEHICLE WAS VISIBLY RIPPED OR BENT EXCEPT THE STEERING KNUCKLE. IT APPEARS AS IF THE STEERING KNUCKLE MATERIAL IS NOT THICK ENOUGH FOR A STRUCTURAL COMPONENT. THE AIR BAG CONTROLLER ON OUR 10-MONTH-OLD 2013 FORD ESCAPE, PURCHASED NEW ON JULY 4, 2013, HAS FAILED. THE AIR BAG INDICATOR LIGHT CAME ON CONSTANTLY. THIS IS THE 3RD MAJOR PROBLEM WE HAVE EXPERIENCED WITH THIS VEHICLE, INCLUDING THE 13S12 FIRE SAFETY RECALL, WHICH ALSO AFFECTED IT. SO, OUT OF THE BLUE, THE AIR BAG STOPPED WORKING ON A NEARLY NEW VEHICLE. THE FORD DEALER DETERMINED THAT THE RCM MODULE (RESTRAINT SYSTEM CONTROL MODULE) HAD FAILED AND REPLACED IT. SINCE THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL PROBLEMS WITH THIS VEHICLE FROM THE BEGINNING, I ASKED IF THERE WAS A RECALL RELATED TO THE AIR BAG CONTROLLER MODULE FAILURE. I WAS TOLD "NO, IT IS LIKELY A 1-IN-1000 TYPE OF FAILURE [SIC]". I SUSPECT OTHERWISE. UNFORTUNATELY, WITH THE 2013 FORD ESCAPE, THE AIR BAG LIGHT CAN EITHER FAIL TO LIGHT, FLASH OR COME ON CONSTANTLY. OURS DID NOT FLASH, AND IS AMBER, SO WE DROVE IT FOR A WEEK BEFORE WE NOTICED THE LIGHT WAS ON. HOWEVER, A PREMATURE FAILURE OF THE RCM MODULE AT 10 MONTHS OF AGE AND 8600 MILES IS INDICATIVE TO ME OF ANOTHER POTENTIAL RECALL ISSUE. I AM ASKING THAT NHTSA INVESTIGATE FURTHER TO DETERMINE IF THERE IS A SIGNIFICANT NUMBER OF AIR BAG RCM MODULE FAILURES ON THE 2013 FORD ESCAPE. THIS IS, IN MY OPINION, A MAJOR LIFE SAFETY HAZARD. The vehicle was towed back to the dealer, where an unknown repair was completed; however, the failure reoccurred. Additionally, the message "Low Coolant" was displayed. The contact stated that she had been adding coolant to the vehicle every month. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer several times, and unknown repairs were completed; however, the failure reoccurred. The dealer diagnosed that the water pump needed to be replaced. The vehicle was then taken to an independent mechanic, where the water pump, several coolant system hoses and clamps were replaced; however, the failure persisted. The independent mechanic diagnosed that there was a coolant leak, but the source of the leak was not determined. The contact stated that the failure had been reoccurring increasingly, and she had been adding coolant to the vehicle every week. The vehicle was not repaired. FORD WOULD TOW THE CAR TO PLEASANTVILLE FORD THEY WOULD FIX (A SENSOR, FILL FLUID, AND GIVE ME THE RUN AROUND) THE FINAL TIME I FILLED A COMPLAINT WITH BBB. THEY GOT A FORD MECHANIC FROM DEER BORN, MI TO LOOK AT THE CAR. HE REPLACED THE RADIATOR AND RIGHT AXIAL. ONLY FOR TWO WEEKS LATER THE SAME "GET TO SAFETY" AND THE CAR DIES AGAIN.

ON 6/3/2014, THE CAR DID THE SAME THING AS I WAS ATTEMPTING TO ENTER INTERSTATE 35 (70 MPH) - AGAIN - BUCKING, LURCHING AND THEN GOING INTO THE "LIMP MODE". THIS IS VERY MUCH A SAFETY ISSUE ESPECIALLY FOR THE AREA THAT I LIVE IN BECAUSE ALL THE ROADWAYS AROUND ME ARE AT LEAST 60 MPH OR HIGHER AND FORD HAS NOT BEEN ABLE TO FIX THIS PROBLEM. THE CAR'S ENGINE IS NOW IDLING VERY ROUGH, TOO, SO THERE ARE OTHER ISSUES WITH THIS ENGINE. *TR
WHEN I TRIED AGAIN TO START UP MY CAR TODAY, THE POWERTRAIN WAS PRODUCING SMOKE. FORD AGREED TO BUYBACK MY CAR IN MID DECEMBER 2013 BUT THEY HAVE STILL NOT BEEN FOLLOWING THROUGH ON THEIR WRITTEN CONTRACT. I HAVE CONTACTED FORD'S RAV DEPT ALONG WITH EMAILING FORD'S TIER1 CUSTOMER SUPPORT EVERYTIME MY CAR HAS CAUGHT ON FIRE. I HAVE ALSO LET THE DEALER KNOW OF MY ISSUES. I HAVE TWEETED TO @FORD, @FORDSERVICE, @FORDESCAPE ABOUT MY CAR. THEY ARE AWARE MY CAR'S OVERHEATING AND TRANSMISSION ISSUES. NO ONE FROM FORD HAS OFFERED TO PUT ME IN A LOANER CAR WHILE THEY TRY TO REISSUE MY 'LOST' BUYBACK CHECK. THEY'D RATHER ME DRIVE AROUND A CAR THAT CATCHES ON FIRE. I SUSPECT THEY ARE TRYING TO HIT A QUARTERLY GOAL AND ARE STALLING TO Q2. I PAID CASH FOR MY CAR SO I'M SURE MY BUYBACK IS IMPACTING THEIR BUDGETING. THE SMOKE FROM THE POWERTRAIN TRIGGERED MY ASTHMA. *TR
ONE DAY WHEN I STARTED MY CAR IT CAME UP WITH THE ERROR MESSAGE "ENGINE FAULT, SERVICE VEHICLE NOW!". I GOT A FRIGHT, RESTARTED THE CAR AND THE ERROR MESSAGE WAS GONE AND I COULD DRIVE IT HOME. THE NEXT DAY THE MESSAGE CAME UP AGAIN, I TRIED TO DRIVE IT AND IT WAS CLUNKY AND WOULDN'T GO PAST FIRST GEAR. I PULLED OVER AND RESTARTED THE CAR AND IT WORKED FINE AGAIN. IT HAPPENED AGAIN THE FOLLOWING DAY SO I TOOK IT INTO THE SERVICE CENTER. THE SERVICE CENTER WAS UNABLE TO RECREATE THE PROBLEM AND COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG IN THE CAR. THEY LOOKED INTO THE CAR COMPUTER'S LOGS AND COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING THERE EITHER. SINCE THEN THE PROBLEM HAS HAPPENED 9-10 TIMES AND IT IS UNSAFE FOR ME AND MY FAMILY TO DRIVE WHEN THE CAR IS REPORTING THE ERROR. WE CANNOT DRIVE IT WHILE THE ERROR IS ON AND THE DEALERSHIP SAY THEY CANNOT FIX IT UNLESS THE ERROR IS SHOWING. *JS
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2013 FORD ESCAPE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 40 MPH, SMOKE WAS SEEN COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD. THE CONTACT EXITED THE VEHICLE AND MOMENTS LATER, FLAMES HAD ENGULFED THE VEHICLE. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS CALLED TO THE SCENE AND EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE . THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED DURING THE INCIDENT AND A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED AT THE SCENE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED BUT NO SOLUTION WAS OFFERED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 33,000.

WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER TO BE INSPECTED UNDER NHTSA RECALL 13V583 WHEN THE ENGINE REACHED 3000 RPM'S HUGE VOLUMES OF BLUE SMOKE CAME OUT OF EXHAUST SYSTEM. WHILE AT THE DEALER THE DEALER PERFORMED THE RECALL INSPECTION AND RELATED TESTS, WHICH RESULTED IN REPLACEMENT OF THE WATER PUMP AND IN THE DEALERS WORDS "ALL COOLANT SYSTEM AND RELATED MODIFICATIONS PER EXTENSIVE RECALL" FORD RECALL 13S12C AND 13S12D. THE DEALER WOULD NOT CONFIRM THAT THE RECALL HAD BEEN REPAIRED OR ELIMINATED FOR THIS VEHICLE AFTER THESE REPAIRS WERE COMPLETED. MOST OF THE PARTS LISTED TO ADDRESS THE RECALL MAKE SENSE EXCEPT THE REPLACEMENT OF THE OIL DIPSTICK. THE DEALER ALSO ADDRESSED THE BLUE SMOKE ISSUE AND IN THE DEALERS WORDS "FOUND EXCESSIVE OIL IN THE TURBO AND EXCESSIVE PLAY IN THE TURBINE WHEEL". THIS RESULTED IN THE REPLACEMENT OF THE TURBO. PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS ENGINE IS THE TROUBLED 2013 1.6 LITER ECOBOOST ENGINE. THE PARTS THAT FAILED AND WERE REPLACED SHOULD NOT HAVE FAILED ON AN ENGINE WITH ONLY 8449 MILES ON IT. THE VEHICLE WAS IN THE SHOP FROM MARCH 18TH UNTIL APRIL 1ST TO GET REPAIRED. ALSO UNDERSTAND THAT WE DO NOT HAVE AN ISSUE WITH THE DEALER, WE FEEL THEY HAVE DONE WHAT THEY CAN TO RESOLVE THESE DEFECTS IN THIS ENGINE. WE ARE CONCERNED THAT NHTSA HAS NOT DONE ENOUGH TO GET THIS TROUBLED ENGINE OFF THE STREETS AND WE ARE ALSO CONCERNED THAT THERE STILL HAS NOT BEEN FULL DISCLOSURE FROM FORD OF WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS ENGINE THAT IS CAUSING MULTIPLE RECALLS. *TR
MY AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION IS NOT SHIFTING WHEN I DRIVE UPHILL AND IT'S CAUSING THE ENGINE TO REV AT REDLINE. WHEN I WAS DRIVING BACK FROM LA OVER THE WEEKEND, THE CAR STRUGGLED THE ENTIRE DRIVE. SOMETHING WAS BURNING UNDER THE HOOD. THE ENGINE WAS ALSO OVERHEATING WHILE DRIVING UPHILL. FORD AGREED TO BUYBACK THIS DEATH TRAP IN MID DEC 2013 BUT THEY HAVE BEEN STALLING THE ENTIRE PROCESS. APPARENTLY MY CHECK IS MISSING. I DON'T WANT TO BE IN THIS CAR WHEN EITHER IT BURST INTO FLAMES, THE TRANSMISSION OR ENGINE SEIZES. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2013 FORD ESCAPE. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 45 MPH THE HEAT SHIELD TORE FROM THE PIPING DUE TO SNOWY WEATHER CONDITIONS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE THE TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED THE HEAT SHIELD NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 18,000. THE CAR STALLS INTERMITTENTLY. THE FIRST TIME 3/11/2014 WAS THE DAY FOLLOWING MY SERVICE FOR OIL CHANGE AND TIRE ROTATION. I WAS PULLING AWAY FROM MY HOUSE AND THE CAR JUST STALLED. I PUT IT INTO PARK AND THE CAR RESTARTED. THE NEXT TIME WAS 3/17/2014, AGAIN I WAS PULLING AWAY FROM MY HOUSE AND THE CAR STALLED, STARTED BEEPING AND A SERVICE ENGINE NOW LIGHT CAME ON. I RESTARTED THE CAR, PARKED AND CALLED THE DEALERSHIP. A TOWING COMPANY PICKED UP THE CAR AND TOOK IT TO THE DEALER. THE DEALER INFORMED ME THAT NOTHING SHOWED UP IN THE MEMORY AND THEY COULD NOT DO ANYTHING BECAUSE IT WASN'T HAPPENING FOR THEM. THEY KEPT THE CAR FOR SEVERAL DAYS BEFORE I PICKED IT UP. APPROXIMATELY 2 WEEKS LATER THE CAR STALLED AGAIN WHILE I WAS ON THE FREEWAY ON RAMP. I TRIED TO CALL THE DEALER BUT THE PHONE WOULD NOT WORK. FORD TOOK THE CAR AGAIN AND COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING IN THE MEMORY. WITHIN 2 WEEKS THIS HAPPENED AGAIN WHILE GETTING ONTO THE FREEWAY. IN ADDITION TO THE STALLING PROBLEM, THE SYNC SYSTEM HAS RESET ITSELF, THE COMPASSES ARE NOT FUNCTIONING PROPERLY, THE EXTERNAL TEMPERATURE GAUGE DOESN'T WORK ALL THE TIME AND NOW THE PHONE RANDOMLY STARTS CALLING PEOPLE. I WAS GIVEN A PHONE NUMBER FOR CORPORATE BY THE DEALERSHIP. I CALLED AND AFTER PLAYING PHONE TAG FOR SEVERAL DAYS THE REPRESENTATIVE (JOSHUA) TOLD ME THAT IF IT STALLS AGAIN THAT I SHOULD NOT ATTEMPT TO RESTART THE CAR AND I NEED TO CALL THE ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE NUMBER AND WAIT FOR THEM TO COME. IN ADDITION, HE SAID UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD THEY ATTEMPT TO RESTART THE CAR BECAUSE IF THEY DO IT WILL RESET THE MEMORY AND FORD CANNOT FIX THE PROBLEM. I ASKED ABOUT THE RECALLS ON MY CAR AND WAS TOLD THERE WERE NONE; HOWEVER, I WAS ON THE WEBSITE AND THERE ARE 2. I ASKED WHY FORD DID NOT SEND ME A RECALL NOTICE AND HE TOLD ME THAT FORD DOESN'T DO THAT. I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE MY CAR. ITS BEEN TO FORD 7 TIMES NOW. HELP! *JS
