The contact researched online and related the failure to Manufacturer Communication Number: 19-2139 - Coolant Intrusion Into The Cylinders (Engine and Engine Cooling). The failure mileage was approximately 130,000.
The problem first arose as the car started going through engine coolant very quickly. Usually the warning would come up saying the engine coolant was low. I would refill, but the car would need more within a day or two. So, I scheduled an appointment to get it checked. In the meantime, I would refill every time the warning came on. Soon after, as we were waiting for the appointment, and as my wife, infant son, and I were driving (with no warning of low coolant), the engine overheated and the car started shaking and would not respond (with a warning that said to pull over safely). Thankfully, we were on side streets in a neighborhood. But with no warning of low coolant beforehand, this is absolutely a safety issue.
Power steering stopped working instantaneously while exiting the interstate. Narrowly avoided leaving the road thru maximum braking, which nearly resulted in being hit from behind. Vehicle displayed a message saying “Steering Assist Fault Service Required”.
I know there was a cyber-attack, it is all very bad timing. Disclaimer. I did educate myself. Door latch broke on rear drivers side and currently 6/22/2024 my door will not close and it's being held shut with ratchet straps. It did not have a warning beforehand, just a rattle. I thought the rattle was another issue but it wasn't. I was told by my mechanics during inspection there was a recall, also my car insurance. Granted I didn't immediately jump on it. My mother owned the car before me, she took the letters to a Ford Dealership in Barre/Montpelier, she was completely dismissed. After I took the car over a few years ago, I got a couple letters but nothing in the last year. I do take my part of the responsibility for not fixing it sooner. My mom was dismissed so I kind of was weary that I would be too. Now, I feel like it was warranted. 3 out of 4 were NOT able to confirm the recall but the last one I called NuCar in St. Albans VT was able to look it up. Now I question the other dealerships. I called 4 Ford dealerships, ALL but ONE was willing to help me. I am supposed to go Monday 6/24/2024 to NuCar in St. Albans VT. I had to explain it's a safety issue, my child is in the car with me, I drive the interstate to work and I have no other means of travel. I'm a single mother, no money, wasn't even offered a rental. I can't understand why when there isn't a computer, there's no will? Backup protocol? I was offered a courtesy shuttle with no guarantee that I'd get a ride home. I have the ability to work from home, I was asked if I had a laptop, yes I do but I have a [XXX], so TV/food in the waiting room? I understand the logic behind the question, I really do. I'm so beyond hurt/frustrated. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
The contact owns a 2014 Ford Escape. The contact stated while driving 40 MPH, the vehicle briefly jerked and hesitated before returning to normal functionality. Check engine light in 2023 for P1299, Cylinder head overtemperature protection code. Coolant was heavily leaking, and engine overheated while in use on the interstate highway. I had a red error message telling me to immediately pull over and shut the vehicle off, which I did. I called for roadside service and had my coolant topped in a safe location. Car was towed to the dealership where a leak was found as well as a crack in the degass bottle engine mount, which sprayed coolant directly onto the engine. The degass bottle and mount were replaced, and the issue was fixed. Now, in 2024, I pulled a P2681 engine light error for an issue with the coolant bypass valve. I drove the car into the same dealership, where they're currently assessing it for issues. Mentioned that the coolant bypass solenoid is out of spec for a resistance issue and needs to be replaced, otherwise the engine will overheat due to improper temperature regulation. Both issues above have been confirmed by Ford mechanics, and neither issues have pulled recalls, though this seems to be reminiscent of a 17S09 recall with coolant sensor issues, engine cylinder head overheating, and subsequent leaks.
The contact owns a 2014 Ford Escape. The contact stated while the vehicle was parked and running, there was a cloud of gray smoke coming from the vehicle and the engine was overheating. The vehicle was taken to two independent mechanics and was diagnosed a cracked cylinder. The vehicle was not repaired; however, the thermostat and water pump were replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but offered no assistance. The failure mileage was 150,000.
The contact owns a 2016 Ford Escape. The contact stated while driving at 50 MPH, the engine overheated, and the vehicle stalled with the high-temperature warning light illuminated. The vehicle was towed to an independent where the vehicle was diagnosed with a cracked plastic coolant reservoir. The contact was informed that the coolant reservoir needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but the failure persisted. The vehicle was towed to the same independent mechanic where the vehicle was diagnosed as a failure with the coolant tubes. The contact was informed that the coolant tubes needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but the failure persisted. The dealer was not contacted, and the vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 50,768.
I've had the Vapor Canister Purge valve replaced 3 times due to it causing the car to not start. Now I have a broken nipple on the bottom hose. I don't understand why there is a recall for the same problem on 2012-2018 Ford Focus 2.0 due to a potential malfunctioning Canister Purge valve. Ford Reference #18S32. I will now have to get it placed for the 4th time and also the part that the bottom hose attaches to. If it had been recalled and a proper fix in place then I wouldn't be going through this a 4th time. On that recall dealers will reprogram power train control module with new software that will detect a malfunctioning Canister Purge valve and prevent a potential excessive fuel vapor system vacuum condition from occurring. Dealers will inspect and replace the canister Purge valve, carbon canister, fuel tank and fuel delivery module, as necessary. There will be no charge for these services. Why aren't the 2014 Escapes with 2.0 engine being recalled as well? There are many Ford forums with the same Escape problem. When I ask the dealership its always sorry just save your receipts. For what when it doesn't run anymore. Do I get a medal for the most Purge Canister valve replacements. It is really a problem when you're stranded because after you fill up it won't start. I'm sure my car has the rest of the problems of the 2.0 Ecoboost recalls like leaking coolant. But what forever reason its always other models even though many have all the same issues as the lawsuits do.
Coolant leak into engine. Engine replacement needed
Using up coolant/possible coolant intrusion issue, I have owned my 2014 Ford Escape for almost 2 years, and have to top up coolant every 2 to 3 months of daily driving, as low as 10 km a day. The engine itself has not had issues YET, but is using coolant when A. It should not. and B. At an alarming rate. There are also no leaks on my driveway, and dealerships cannot find the issue.
Has to replace the Fan Assembly Coolant sensor three years in a row beginning in 2022, 2023, and 2024. 2023 January, also has the Right Side CV Axcle replaced because a/c coolant was leaking. This leaking went in to the transmission and the transmission also had to be rebuild. Then in 2024 of May the transmission fault service light came on again after being rebuild in January 2023. Took it back to AAMCO and was provided the following codes as errors: P0087- Fuel/Rail system pressure; P0217 engine coolant over temperature; P0219 Engine over speed condition, P0732 gear 2 incorrect ratio, P0733 gear 3, 4, 4 all incorrect ratio. They stated my transmission needed to be rebuilt again and was out of warranty.
The contact owns a 2014 Ford Escape. The contact stated while driving 25 MPH, the engine overheated and the vehicle stalled, nearly causing a crash. The messages "Engine Coolant Low" and “Overheating - Safety Stop" were displayed. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that the cylinder head was fractured, causing oil intrusion in the engine. The contact stated that the mechanic took the engine apart and replaced the cylinder head. Additionally, the contact stated that after refueling the vehicle, the vehicle failed to restart. The contact was able to restart the vehicle after several attempts. The contact activated the hazard lights and drove the vehicle. The dealer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 120,000.
The contact owns a 2014 Ford Escape. The contact stated that while driving approximately 25 MPH, the message "Engine Overheated" was displayed and the vehicle started losing motive power and stalled. The vehicle was towed to the local mechanic who diagnosed and determined that the cylinder head was cracked and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but approximately three months later the failure reoccurred, and the vehicle was towed to the local dealer. The vehicle was not yet repaired. No further information was available. The failure mileage was approximately 120,000.
Brought in vehicle for service. Was told the tires couldn’t be rotated because of “swollen lug nuts”. I would be responsible for replacing all 20 at a cost of around $180.00 for the parts. The dealership said if I should happen to get a flat tire, I would not be able to do it and the car would most likely need to be towed. I don’t think I should have to pay for this repair on an item so basic and so important. I have not had an issue until the dealer brought it to my attention. I spoke with Ford customer service and was told this is out of warranty and there was no way to escalate my concern at Ford.
The transmission failed on the highway. I put a lot of money in repairs on this vehicle since purchased in 2022 and stopped working in 2024. The vehicle has the defective 6f35 transmission. Paid almost 5k to repair the transmission alone. Ford has issued no recalls for thos claim but they knew it was defective.
The contact owns a 2014 Ford Escape. The contact stated while driving at approximately 40 MPH, the vehicle was shaking and vibrating abnormally. The contact stated that the check engine warning light was illuminated with the message "Pull Over Engine Overheating" displayed. The contact stated that the failure had reoccurred and had taken the vehicle to an independent mechanic who diagnosed the vehicle and informed the contact that the engine needed to be replaced due to coolant intrusion into the engine block. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that prior to the engine failure the transmission failed. The contact was informed that the transmission needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 220,000.
While driving this vehicle in traffic, the engine began to fail causing the car to abruptly stall. During this incident, the engine light and low coolant indicator illuminated. Vehicles behind my car nearly slammed into the rear of my vehicle due to this engine failure. Upon inspection, two independent certified service centers confirmed engine coolant had been ingested into the cylinder block causing this engine to fail. Upon full investigation, numerous Ford Ecoboost engines have a manufactures defect on top of the cylinder head that causes this problem. This particular engine only has 52,000 original miles.
Steering assist fault. Power steering freezes when car starts. Steering wheel is locked so you are stuck wherever you parked your car. Cannot turn wheels. Very finnicky youtube tutorials to get it “fixed” after 30+ minutes of restarting the vehicle. This is the second time this has happened to me in this car.
The contact owns a 2014 Ford Escape. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed the vehicle lost motive power and the engine overheated, with the check engine warning light illuminated. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was unknown.
Unknown. Something at the backside of the motor caught on fire. The car overheated and would not drive. Pulled over, cooled off, added coolant, drove home. Car won't go over 40, shakes, and makes noises. Took it to automotive place. They took the manifold(?) and stopped! Called and told us there had been a fire in the motor, we need to call our insurance company and take it to a Ford dealership. Warranty and insurance company are both fighting with us. Neither one wants to pay!!! This is total BS!!!! No recalls?! Google this cars problems and their #1 problem is they catch on fire!!! WHY IS THERE NO RECALLS?!?!? Does someone have to die to get a recall?
The contact owns a 2014 Ford Escape. The contact stated while attempting to start the vehicle, the vehicle failed to respond as intended. After several days, while driving, the contact became aware that the engine was misfiring, and the coolant fluid was low. The contact was able to inspect the fluids, and immediately after opening the coolant reservoir, the coolant level went up. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer where it was diagnosed with air bubbles; however, the failure persisted. The local Toyota dealer was contact, and the contact was advised to take the vehicle to a Ford dealer for assistance. The power steering assist has begun to randomly stop working. It has happened 3 times. The first time it happened was as soon as I started the car to move it. I turned the car off and turned it back on and it worked. 5 starts later the same problem occurred and I was able to restart the car and it worked. Approximately 7 starts after that the power steering assist stopped working again, but this time it was not as soon as the vehicle was started. This time it went out mid turn as I began turning onto the road. Each time the warning came up on the dash after the steering became difficult. The power steering assist randomly going out while driving puts the safety of myself, my passengers, and other cars at risk for a crash from the sudden change in ability to steer the vehicle. At this time the vehicle has not been taken into a service center because it is not a consistent problem and if they don't find the problem on the first try they will charge a diagnostic fee to tell me that "everything is fine" or "we can't find the problem" and I am not willing to pay them money for no work. Once was a fluke, twice was a coincidence, three times is a problem that makes this vehicle unsafe to drive. Ford has had a recall on previous model years for this same issue.
The transmission on my 2014 Ford Escape went totally bad at 91,000 miles. I had to replace the transmission at a cost of $6,780. I have read that this has happened to many 2014 Ford Escapes with low mileage. There should be a recall on this vehicle.
Purchsed a 2014 Ford Escape Titanuim 1.6L Eco Boost in April of 2024. Since then, my vehicle has been to three different mechanics, one was a Ford dealership, because the sensor keeps coming on and coolant keeps leaking out. The first incident occured barely a week after the purchase and I've actually been stranded 2 out of the 3 times. In my research I've learned that Ford is aware of this issue, however, there's no recall on my vehicle.
I purchased the car in April 2023, a few days later the sensor light came on and coolant leaked out and I was stranded. I took it to my local Ford dealership and they "repaired it". About a month ago the same thing happened and I was stranded. Got it towed to a mechanic, was told it's been repaired, a couple of weeks later the sensor came back on, but I was able to make it to the mechanic before I was stranded. He put a mark on the reservoir and told me to add more coolant if it got before that line. I shouldn't have to keep doing this.
veh running hot and low on coolant; took nearly a gallon to set coolant level when checked. after cycling coolant & getting heat into engine found coolant entering the combustion chamber cracked head or gasket. engine misfire upon start up; white exhaust smoke. check egine light also on.
The contact owns a 2014 Ford Escape. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the "Check Transmission" message was displayed, and the vehicle started to hesitate. The contact was on the way to the dealer and heard an abnormal sound and saw black liquid coming from underneath the vehicle. The vehicle driven to the dealer and was diagnosed with transmission failure. The contact was informed that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The contact stated that the air bag warning light remained illuminated. The contact stated that soon after the failure, while driving at an undisclosed speed, the instrument panel displayed an error message "Engine Overheating” and the fuel tank failed to function as need. The message “Turn OFF Engine" prior to the engine overheating. The contact stated that the temperature gauge was extremely elevated, and the vehicle was pulled over to the shoulder. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer and was diagnosed with coolant intrusion. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.
There's coolant intrusion in my engine due to - as best I can figure - a manufacturing defect that Ford acknowledges in their 2.0L EcoBoost engines (per TSB 22-2229), but NOT in their 1.5L and 1.6L EcoBoost engines (mine is a 1.6L and was produced in parallel with the 2.0L, though they later replaced it with a 1.5L). This is an acknowledged defect, plain and simple, and a safety issue because the engine can catastrophically fail during use due to it! The only fix is literally replacing the engine. Ford won't do anything because it's past the drivetrain warranty.
The contact owns a 2014 Ford Escape. The contact stated while driving 60 MPH, the vehicle unintendedly decelerated to 30 MPH. The check engine warning light and an unknown sensor warning light were illuminated. The contact veered to the side of the road. The contact stated that he turned off and restarted the vehicle and was able to continue driving. The contact stated that the failure recurred while driving the following day, and the vehicle decelerated from 65 MPH to 10 MPH, nearly causing a semi-truck to crash into the vehicle. The contact was able to veer to the side of the road and turned off the vehicle for 15 minutes. The contact stated that he restarted the vehicle, activated the hazard lights, and continued driving at 40-50 MPH. The contact stated that the failure mostly occurred while driving and exceeding 60 MPH. The vehicle was taken to the dealer to be inspected. The dealer determined that an unknown sensor had failed, and the failure was related to NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V495000 (Electrical System); however, the VIN was not included. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle was not covered due to the VIN. The failure mileage was approximately 125,000.
The contact owns a 2014 Ford Escape. The contact stated that the back over prevention camera screen had displayed the message “Rear View Camera Not Available” on a blue screen while attempting to reverse. The contact stated that while shifting into park, the vehicle intermittently displayed a message that the vehicle was not in park. Additionally, while shifting into drive, the RPM increased, and the transmission felt like it was stuck between gears. The contact stated that the vehicle was previously included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V159000 (Back Over Prevention) and 22V413000 (Power Train), and the repairs were completed. The vehicle was not repaired a second time because the VIN was no longer under recall. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 50,100.
My daughter's 2014 Ford escape low coolant light came on today and the thermostat jumped straight to over heating and the check engine light came on. The coolant has been going down very quickly during normal use and she has to continually fill the coolant more and more recently. Today was the first time the light came on and it overheated.
The contact owns a 2014 Ford Escape. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the high engine temperature warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. The contact was informed about NHTSA Campaign Number: 17V209000 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 94,000.
The vehicle engine block has a weak spot in which it has allowed coolant to leak into the number 3 cylinder and thus ruining the engine as my local ford dealer (Greiner Ford. Casper, Wyoming) confirmed. Apparently it's a known issue with ford and they won't do anything to fix it. A check engine light came on and the car started having a bunch of hesitation which led me to the dealership. The issue runs the risk of fire which could cause bodily injury to me and also causes me to be without a vehicle even though I'm currently making payments on it.
The contact owns a 2014 Ford Escape. The contact stated that while starting the vehicle, the engine overheated immediately. The check engine and engine temperature warning lights were illuminated, and the "Low Coolant" message was displayed. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, who advised the contact to tow the vehicle to the dealer. The vehicle was then towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed with coolant intrusion into the engine, and the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. The manufacturer advised the contact to file a complaint with the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was approximately 107,000.
Transmission failed without warning while driving on March 18, 2024. There were no previous issues, warning lights, symptoms, etc. The acceleration suddenly stopped, and the car struggled to move. This put me and other drivers at great risk of physical harm. The problem has been confirmed to be a serious transmission issue by our master mechanic and now needs to be replaced.
Per mechanic, cylinder head crack causing to oil leak
The contact owned a 2014 Ford Escape. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for a service appointment which included a system scan and replacement of the coolant valves. The contact stated that after the repair was completed and the mechanic was test-driving the vehicle, the engine caught on fire. A nearby Police Officer alerted the mechanic to pull the vehicle over to the shoulder of the road because the vehicle was on fire. The mechanic drove the vehicle to the shoulder of the road and exited the vehicle. The Police Officer extinguished the fire by using a fire extinguisher that was in the trunk of the officer's vehicle. No injuries were sustained. The vehicle was towed back to the independent mechanic. The contact was informed that the cause of the fire was the engine and the engine coolant. The vehicle was destroyed due to the fire. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was filed. The failure mileage was approximately 65,000.

My coolant has been leaking starting early this month and I took it to my repair shop. My car has 94,347 miles on it. They told me it could be related to Safety Recall Notice 17S09/NHTSA Recall 17V-209. They put in Stop Leak to help. It did for a while but continues to leak. In searching the internet about this problem, I found that many other people are having this problem and are not getting satisfaction from Ford. In the end, they have to have the engine replaced. I'm worried that this problem will advance to more problems like other people are having. On March 11, 2024, I took the car to my repair shop.
I have an oil and coolant leak in my 2014 Ford Escape. My mechanic said there is a recall for this issue, but It is not coming up under my Vin. My mechanic says the car is dangerous to drive because it can catch on fire. I see that there was a big recall with the Ford Escape for this issue and I am disappointed that my vin # is not included. Very frustrating because this is an extremely serious matter that could result in loss of life and Ford does not want to fix it!!!! The issue has been confirmed with my service garage and online.
My backup camera does not work properly sometimes I get and error messages. Sometimes it shows everything upside down and sometimes nothing at all. It been like this since we got the vehicle from Osborne dealership in [XXX] . They sent us to Ford which across the street to get checked out.
