DURING INSPECTING OF VEHICLE, NOTICED THAT RIGHT STABILIZER BAR LINK WAS BROKEN, VEHICLE TAKEN TO INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP. DEALER/MANUFACTURER WERE NOTIFIED. *AK *YH
CAUSED LOSS OF CONTROLL OF SUV. *AK
HOW CAN THEY PUT A PLASTIC PIN TO HOLD STABILIZER BAR?*AK
CONSUMER INDICATED THAT FRONT AND BACK ROTORS WERE WEARING OUT PREMATURELY. DEALERSHIP CHANGED THE BRAKES ON FOUR SEPARATE OCCASIONS WITHIN THE LAST YEAR.*AK
WHILE DRIVING VEHICLE WAS MAKING A FUNNY NOISE. VEHICLE WOULD NOT START. TOOK VEHICLE TO A MECHANIC, AND HE STATED THAT IT WAS ONGOING PROBLEM THAT FORD WAS HAVING WITH FUEL PUMP. CONSUMER STATED THAT 56000 MILES LATER PROBLEM WAS STILL OCCURRING. PLEASE PROVIDE ANY FURTHER INFORMATION.*AK
THE SUPPORT BOLT ON THE LEFT SIDE HAS BROKEN AND THE RIGHT SIDE IS BENT AND READY TO BREAK. I DO HAVE PHOTOS. THE SEAT BELTS ARE RIPPING IN HALF AT A POINT WHERE THE BELT IS INSIDE THE REEL. BOTH SHOULDER BELTS ON THE 3RD SEAT HAVE RIPPED AND THE LEFT SIDE 2ND SEAT SHOULDER BELT HAS RIPPED APROX. 3/4 OF THE WAY THROUGH. FORD WILL NOT COMMIT TO REPLACEMENT, WILL ONLY EVALUATE.

VEHICLE DID A 180 DEGREE TURN ON THE RIGHT WING OF AN INTERSECTION, CONSUMER LOSS CONTROL AND VEHICLE CRASHED INTO A CURB, THE REAR AXLE WAS BROKEN WITH IMPACT ON THE REAR LEFT WHEEL, THE ROADS WERE WET AT THE TIME OF OCCURANCE.*JB

WE PURCHASED A BRAND NEW 1998 FORD EXPEDITION IN NOVEMBER OF 1997. THE CAR CAME STANDARD WITH A 3 YEAR "BUMPER-TO-BUMBER" WARRENTY. OUR 3 YEAR WARRANTY EXPIRED IN NOVEMBER OF 2000. ON JULY 19, 2001, WE EXPERIENCED A MECHANICAL PROBLEM WITH OUR VEHICLE AND HAD IT TOWED TO THEODORE ROBINS-FORD IN COSTA MESA, CA. THEY,THEODORE ROBINS INFORMED US THAT ONE OF THE ENGINES CYLINDERS WAS NOT WORKING. NOW, OUR CAR IS A LITTLE LESS THAN 4 YEARS OLD AND HAS ONLY 21,000 MILES ON IT. THEODORE ROBINS-FORD IS REFUSING TO FIX THE CAR FREE OF CHARGE. THE TOTAL COST OF REPAIRS IS ABOUT $1900. THEODORE ROBINS-FORD MAINTAINS THE POINT-OF-VIEW THAT THE WARRENTY HAS EXPIRED. THEY ARE WILLING TO CHARGE US $495 THAT WOULD EXTEND OUR WARRENTY FROM NOVEMBER OF 2000 UNTIL NOVEMBER OF 2002. THIS $495 AMOUNT WILL COVER THE COST OF FIXING THE CAR.*AK
THE BLACK BACKING INSIDE THE SIDE MIRRORS ARE MELTING EXPOSING ALL COMPONENTS INSIDE THE MIRROR. I WAS TOLD BY FORD THA IT IS CAUSED BY THE TURNING SIGNAL LIGHTS IN THE MIRROR. MY TRUCK HAS THE DOUBLE BAND LIGHTS AND THEY NEED TO BE SINGLE BAND.

THE LINKS HAVE FALLEN OFF OR SELF DESTRUCUTED 3 TIMES. TWICW ON THE LEFT FRONT, AND ONCE ON THE RIGHT FRONT. THE DEALERSHIP IS FULLY AWARE A PROBLEM EXISTS AS THEY TOLD US A RECALL MIGHT BE FORTH COMING. HOWEVER, AFTER READING IN THE PAPER THAT ONLY 14 PROBLEMS HAVE BEEN REPORTED, I FELT I MUST INFORM YOUR ORGANISATION OF THE CHRONIC FAILURE ON MY EXPEDITION. *AK
WHEN DRIVING AT 35MPH VEHICLE WAS BROADSIDED, CAUSING IT TO GO AIRBORNE, DAMAGING FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. UPON IMPACT, NEITHER DRIVER'S SIDE NOR PASSENGER'S SIDE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED. PLEASE PROVIDE FURTHER DETAILS. *AK
WHILE DRIVING, CONSUMER STATES THAT THE VEHICLE BEGAN DRIFTING, CONSUMER THEN MADE A CORRECTION AND LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE, ONE PERSON WAS INJURED IN THE ACCIDENT, SHORTLY AFTER THE ACCIDENT THE DEALER FOUND SOME ALIGNMENT PROBLEMS. *SLC
WHILE TRAVELING AT HIGH SPEED THE #3 SPARK PLUG ON THE LEFT HAND SIDE OF VEHICLE DETONATED, STRIPPING THE SPARK PLUG THREADS AND INCAPACITATING THE VEHICLE. THE FORD DEALER WANTS TO CHARGE US $2000 TO FIX WHAT IS ESSENTIALLY A KNOWN DEFECT. FORD REDESIGNED THE SPARK PLUG HOUSING WITH A REDUCED NUMBER OF THREADS RESULTING IN THIS CATASTROPHIC FAILURE. THIS DEFECT HAS BEEN DOCUMENTENTED ON A NUMBER OF MESSAGE BOARDS. *AK
WHEN THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED, THE PEDAL PULSATED WHICH CAUSED THE EXTENDED STOPPING DISTANCE. THE CONSUMER TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP ONCE A YEAR DEALING WITH THE ISSUE, HOWEVER THE PROBLEM CONTINUED TO OCCUR. PLEASE PROVIDE FURTHER DETAILS. *JB
PE 01 022; FRONT STABILIZER LINK FAILURE: FRONT STABALIZER BAR BROKE DURING AN OIL CHANGE. VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO DEALER FOR INSPECTION. DEALER INFORMED CONSUMER THAT STABILIZER BAR WAS BROKEN. REPAIRS WERE MADE BY THE DEALER. FEEL FREE TO PROVIDE ANY FURTHER INFORMATION ON THIS MATTER.*AK
WHILE OPERATING THE VEHICLE AT ABOUT 20 MPH, IT DROPED INTO 4 WHEEL LOW RANGE COMPLETELY ON ITS OWN. THE DASH SWITCH WAS STILL IN 2 WHEEL DRIVE. THE TRANSMISSION BEGAN SCREAMING AND GRINDING GEARS AND WOULD NOT COME OUT OF 4 WHEEL LOW. VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO FORD DEALERSHIP WHERE THEY FOUND NOTHING WRONG. AFTER REPORTING THESE NHTSA COMPLAINTS AND SERVICE BULLETINS ABOUT THIS VERY SAME PROBLEM, AND PROVIDING THE SERVICE MANAGER WITH COPIES, THEY SUDDENLY FOUND THE PROBLEM. THEY ARE REPLACING ALL THE COMPONENTS INCLUDING "MODE SWITCH" GEM MODULE, 4X4 SHIFT MOTOR. THEY'LL ALSO CHECK ALL CONNECTIONS, CHANGE ALL FLUIDS INCLUDING TRANSFER CASE AND TRANSMISSION. WE'VE BEEN ASSURED THIS WILL RESOLVE THE SITUATION. WE'LL SUBMIT A FOLLOW-UP REPORT IF PROBLEM RECURS.
THERE WAS NO ACCIDENT INVOLVED WITH THIS PART FAILURE AS OUR MECHANIC CAUGHT THE PROBLEM BEFORE WE HAD AN ACCIDENT. OUR MECHANIC FELT SINCE THIS IS THE EXACT SAME PART USED IN THE EXPLORER AND MOUNTAINEER AND HAS SINCE BEEN RECALLED, THIS ONE FOR THE EXPEDITION SHOULD BE RECALLED AS WELL. THIS IS THE EXACT SAME PART! FORD WAS OF NO HELP AND FRANKLY FORD NOR THE DEALERSHIP CARED ABOUT THIS PROBLEM. NO SAFETY DEFEC TMENTIONED.*AK
WHILE DRIVING OVER SPEED BUMP AT 2 MPH RIGHT FRONT OF VEHICLE DROPPED. DEALER REPLACED BROKEN RIGHT FRONT TORSION BAR. *AK *SLC
AT 8:30 AM ON A COOL MORNING, THE TIRE SUDDENLY EXPLODED WITHOUT ANY WARNING AFTER ONLY 3 MILES ON I-17, AND A TOTAL OF 16 MILES FROM START UP. THE HIGHWAY WAS DRY AND CLEAN. I COASTED TO A STOP WITHOUT BRAKING, OR ANY STEERING PROBLEM. THE OUTSIDE SIDE WALL IS COMPLETELY SEPARATED 3600FROM THE TREAD. THERE ARE 25 RADIAL SPLITS IN THE SIDEWALL, AVERAGING 3" LONG, ALMOST TO THE RIM. THE TREAD SHOWS NO DAMAGE. THE INSIDE SIDEWALL HAS ONE DAMAGED AREA NEAR THE TREAD. THE TIRE WAS NOT HOT. THE OTHER THREE TIRES APPEAR TO BE OK, BUT SO DID THIS ONE PRIOR TO FAILURE. I HAVE PHOTOS, AND WILL KEEP THE TIRE FOR INSPECTION. THE TIRE WAS MADE IN CANADA. VEHICLE WAS IN GARAGE WHEN I OPENED DRIVERS DOOR AND STOOD ON RUNNING BOARD TO GAIN ENTRY. WHEN I PUT PRESSURE DOWN THERE WAS A POP NOISE AND THE LEFT FRONT CORNER OF THE VEHICLE DROPPED DOWN. IT WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER AND DIAGNOSED AS A LEFT TORSION BAR FAILURE. I HAD THE DEALER GIVE ME THE BROKEN PART AND IT IS OBVIOUS EVEN TO MY UNTRAINED EYE THAT IT HAD A MANUFACTURING FLAW. THE END OF THE TORSION BAR HAD A HOLE INIT WHERE MOISTURE COLLCTED CAUSING IT TO CORRODE AND EVENTUALLY FAIL BY SNAPING IN TWO. I CALLED FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE AND THEY DIDN'T SEEM TOO CONCERNED. THEIR ONLY RESPONSE WAS A CUSTOMER COMMENT CARD IN THE MAIL. I THINK THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A CATASROPHIC ACCIDENT AS THIS VEHICLE IS DESIGNED TO CARRY EIGHT PEOPLE AND PULL RECREATIONAL VEHICLES. IT WORRIES ME AND MY WIFE THAT IT COULD HAPPEN AGAIN AND I THINK SOME RESEARCH ON WHERE THIS PART WAS MADE AND IF IT IS MADE WITH INFERIOR METERIAL OR WORKMANSHIP. HOW MANY MORE EXPEDITIONS ARE OUT THERE WITH TORSION BARS THAT COULD SNAP AT ANY TIME?.
CONSUMER WAS SITTING IN A DRIVE-THRU AND HAD PUT VEHICLE IN PARK WHEN IT EXPERIENCED SUDDEN ACCELERATION, CONSUMER STATES IT STARTED SHAKING AND MAKING A LOUD SQUEALING NOISE, THE BRAKES DID NOT WORK AND VEHICLE CRASHED INTO A CONCRETE GUARD POST, THE AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY, CONSUMER SUFFERED A MILD CONCUSSION, FORD STATES THEY CAN NOT FIND ANY CAUSE FOR THE PROBLEM AND CAN NOT HELP CONSUMER ANY FURTHER. *SLC
ON 16 MAY 2001 WHILE TRAVELING SOUTH ON COLORADO INTERSTATE 25 IN DENVER, OUR FORD EXPEDITION STARTED TO CHUG AND SPUTTER. THINKING IT WAS BAD GAS FROM FILLING THE TANK UP AROUND 9:00AM EARLIER THAT SAME DAY, WE TRIED TO CHANGE LANES TO GET TO THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD. THE EXPEDITION THEN STALLED AS WE COASTED TO A HALT ON THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD AT THE UNDER PASS OF I-25 AND US 285. WE THEN TURNED ON THE EMERGENCY FLASHERS. SMOKE WAS COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD. THINKING IT WAS OVERHEATED, WE OPENED THE HOOD TO COOL THE ENGINE DOWN. AS SOON AS THE HOOD POOPED UP FLAMES WERE VISIBLE AND WE PROCEEDED TO EXIT THE EXPEDITION. THE DENVER FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS CALLED AROUND 8:55PM AND PUMPER TRUCK NO. 22 ARRIVED TO SCENE. WHEN THE FIRE DEPARTMENT ARRIVED, THE EXPEDITION WAS FULLY ENGULFED IN FLAMES. AFTER THE FIRE WAS EXTINGUISHED, THE CAPTAIN SHOWED ME WHERE THE FIRE STARTED. ON THE DRIVERS SIDE, A FUEL LINE WAS DETERMINED TO BE FAULTY NEXT TO THE FENDER DUE TO DETERIORATION FROM THE FUEL AND THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE. THIS IS REFLECTIVE IN HIS REPORT #01-23023. HE ALSO TOLD ME THAT I WAS LUCKY THAT THE TANK WAS FULL OF FUEL OTHERWISE THE EXPEDITION WOULD HAVE EXPLODED. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN SERVICED BY FORD UNDER THEIR EXTENDED SERVICE AND MAINTENANCE PLAN. WE UTILIZED THE PLAN UNTIL IT EXPIRED AT 36,000 MILES. AFTER WE NO LONGER WERE UNDER A MAINTENANCE PLAN, WE HAD OUR EXPEDITION SERVICE BY GOODYEAR AND OIL CHANGED AT APPROXIMATELY EVERY 3000 TO 4000 MILES. THE LAST TIME MAINTENANCE WAS COMPLETED UNDER THE HOOD WAS IN MARCH 2001. NO OTHER MAINTENANCE WAS DONE UNDER THE HOOD.
EXTERIOR MIRRORS ARE EXPERIENCEING PEELING FROM INSIDE OF BOTH MIRRORS, AND CAUSING POOR VISIBILITY. DEALER NOTIFIED, AND UNWILLING TO ASSIST IN THIS MATTER. FEEL FREE TO PROVIDE US WITH ANY FURTHER INFORMATION CONCERNING THIS PROBLEM. *AK
VEHICLE DOES NOT HANDLE THE WAY IT SHOULD, IT ACTS LIKE IT'S OUT OF ALIGNMENT AT ALL TIMES. DOES NOT GO WHERE CONSUMER STEERS IT, AND DOES NOT HANDLE WELL. VEHICLE NOT TAKEN TO DEALER YET. *AK
WHILE DRIVING ABOUT 70 MPH FRONT LEFT TIRE HAD A BLOWOUT. GOODYEAR, WRANGLER, P-265/70R17. *AK CONSUMER STATES TIRE WAS TOO BLOWN APART TO DETERMINE IT THERE WAS A TREAD SEPARATION AND FEELS THAT THESE ORIGINAL LIGHT TRUCK TIRES SHOULD NOT BE INSTALLED ON A HEAVY SUV SUCH AS THIS. *SLC
VEHICLE WILL ACCELERATE VERY SLOWLY AND WILL NOT AUTOMATICALLY SHIFT TO NEXT GEAR. FORD DEALERSHIP COULD NOT DETERMINE REASON FOR T DEFECT, AND WOULD HAVE TO TAKE ENGINE APART. PLEASE PROVIDE ANY ADDITIONAL INFORMATION/ATTACHMENTS.*AK

WHILE SITTING AT IDLE, THE ENGINE BLEW A SPARKPLUG FROM THE CYLINDER, COMPLETELY STRIPPING THE THREADS AND REQUIRING AN ENTIRE NEW HEADER ASSEMBLY ($1800 REPAIR). I HAD NEVER HEARD OF SUCH A FAILURE BUT THE DEALER HAS SEEN IT ON OTHER EXPEDITIONS/NAVIGATORS AND F-150 PICKUPS. THIS SUV IS USED AS MY WIFE'S "MINI VAN" AND DOES NOT PULL TRAILERS OR GO OFF-ROAD. THERE HAS TO BE A MANUFACTURING DEFECT WITH THE ALUMINUM HEAD.*AK
IF VEHICLE HITS A SLIGHT BUMP IN ROAD IT WILL VIBRATE. CONSUMER IS RESPONDING TO A CURRENT INVESTIGATION CONCERNING STABILIZER BAR. CONSUMER HAS TO SLOW DOWN TO GET CONTROL OF VEHICLE. *AK
I AM WRITING IN RESPONSE TO A NEWS ARTICLE I SAW REGARDING NHTSA INVESTIGATIONS OF 1997 AND 1998 FORD EXPEDITIONS, IN PARTICULAR FAILURES OF THE FRONT STABILIZER BAR LINKS. I AM CREATING THIS DEFECT REPORT BECAUSE I BELIEVE MY 1998 FORD EXPEDITION MAY ALSO SUFFER FROM A DEFECT WITH THE FRONT STABILIZER BAR LINK. THE STABILIZER BAR CONNECTS THE LEFT AND RIGHT FRONT WHEEL CONTROL ARMS AND IS SUPPOSED TO HELP IN CONTROLLING THE PITCH OF THE VEHICLE IN TURNS. WHEN DRIVING, IF I DRIVE OVER THE SLIGHTEST OF IMPERFECTIONS IN A PAVED ROAD, THE FRONT WHEELS START TO VIBRATE AND I HAVE TO SLOW DOWN TO REGAIN CONTROL AND TO MAKE THE WHEELS RIDE CORRECTLY. ALSO WHEN EXITING OFF A RAMP FROM A HIGHWAY (MEANING A VERY GRADUALLY RIGHT EXIT, NOT A SHARP RIGHT TURN), THERE IS A LOUD THUMPING SOUND AND THE WHEELS AGAIN SEEM TO LOSE CONTROL AND START TO VIBRATE. LIKEWISE, WHEN MAKING A SHARP LEFT OR RIGHT TURN, THERE IS A LOUD THUMPING SOUND AND THE WHEEL SEEM TO LOSE CONTROL AND START VIBRATING. I HAVE TO PRESS THE BRAKES TO SLOW THE VEHICLE IN ORDER TO REGAIN CONTROL. THIS IS MORE THAN JUST A MATTER OF GETTING MY 'ALIGNMENT FIXED.' PLEASE NOTE: I THINK THIS IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM WHICH NEEDS MORE INVESTIGATION BY THE NHTSA. THIS BEHAVIOR STARTED ABOUT APRIL 2001. THIS HAS GRADUALLY GOTTEN WORSE AND WORSE. IT NOW OCCURS EVERY TIME I DRIVE THIS FORD EXPEDITION. THIS VEHICLE HAS NEVER BEEN IN ANY TYPE OF ACCIDENT TO MY KNOWLEDGE. ON INTERSTATE AT 70MPH VEHICLE BECAME HARD TO CONTROL FOR ABOUT 2-3 MILES. AS WE SLOWED DOWN THE TIRE BLEW OUT. TIRE WAS SMOKING AND SHREDDED IN SEVERAL PLACES. WHEN RETURNED HOME WE TRIED TO GET MEDFORD LINCOLN DEALERSHIP IN DOTHAN, AL TO REPLACE THE TIRE. THEY STATED IT WAS A ROADHAZARD AND WOULD SELL US A TIRE FOR $135. WE TOOK THE TIRE TO A GOODYEAR DEALERSHIP IN DOTHAN, AL AND THAY STATED THEY FOUND A PIECE OF PLASTIC IN THE TIRE AND SAID THAT WAS WHAT MADE IT SHRED AND GAVE US A PIECE OF PLASTIC HE SAID WAS LYING IN THE TIRE. WE TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK TO MEDFORD AND THEY SAID THEY SAW THE PLASTIC THE DAY BEFORE BUT NEVER SAID ANYTHING ABOUT IT TO US. WAS THERE REALLY A PIECE OF PLASTIC IN THE TIRE AND IF SO HOW DID IT GET IN THE TIRE AND WHY DIDN'T MEDFORD LINCOLN DEALERSHIP IN DOTHAN, AL MENTION IT WAS IN THERE, OR WAS THIS JUST A COVER UP ON THERE PART?
