MY 1998 FORD EXPEDITION BLEW A SPARK PLUG OUT OF THE HEAD. I NOW LEARN THAT FORD'S ENGINEERS RECOGNIZED THIS DEFECT IN THE HEAD AND HAVE INCREASED THE THREAD COUNT IN THE HEAD FROM APPROXIMATELY 4 THREADS TO APPROXIMATELY 10 THREADS (PER POWER FORD, TORRANCE, CA). *AK
DRIVING DOWN TO BAKERSFIELD, FOLLOWING A SEVERE SKIING INJURY, MY 1998 FORD EXPEDITION BLEW A SPARK PLUG OUT THE ALUMINUM HEAD, SHEARING OFF THE COIL, AND INCAPACITATING THE CAR. *NM
DRIVING FROM VA TO MI, HIT SNOW IN OH. HIT PATCH OF 'BLACK ICE', SPUN OUT, HIT TRACTOR TRAILER THAT WAS ON THE RIGHTS SIDE OF US WITH THE FRONT OF MY TRUCK(1998 FORD EXPEDITION), ROLLED 3-4 TIMES. SLIDE ABOUT 20 FEET. NO AIRBAG DEPLOYED THROUGH ALL OF THIS.*AK
THE CAR WAS UNDER NORMAL CITY DRIVING CONDITIONS WHEN THE #3 SPARK PLUG WAS VIOLENTLY EJECTED FROM THE ENGINE. ALTHOUGH THERE WAS NOT A FIRE, WITH FUEL AIR VAPORS BEING EXPELLED FROM THE EMPTY SPARK PLUG HOLE AND THE PLUG AND WIRE VISIBLE ARCING IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT, THERE CERTAINLY WAS A POSSIBILITY OF A FIRE. I HAVE CONTACTED FORD MOTORS CUSTOMER RELATIONS DIRECTLY TO REPORT THIS AS A POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS DESIGN FLAW, THEY FLATLY DENY THAT THERE IS ANY PROBLEM. UNFORTUNATELY, THE COST OF THIS REPAIR CAN RUN BETWEEN $3000 AND $6000, WHICH IS PROBABLY WHY FORD HAS CHOSEN TO TAKE THE COARSE OF DENIAL. AT THE SAME TIME THEY ARE DENYING THAT THIS IS A HAZARDOUS DESIGN FLAW, THE HAVE CORRECTED THE PROBLEM IN REPLACEMENT PARTS AND IN LATER MODEL YEARS. *JB

WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED IT CAUGHT ON FIRE, ON ITS OWN. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE. *AK *SC THE CONSUMER BELIEVED THE FIRE WAS A RESULT OF A DEFECTIVE CRUISE CONTROL DEACTIVATION SWITCH. *JB
WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED SMOKE WAS COMING FROM UNDERNEATH THE HOOD. CONSUMER OPENED THE HOOD, AND VEHICLE CAUGHT ON FIRE. CONSUMER WAS ABLE TO EXTINGUISH THE FIRE WITH A FIRE EXTINGUISHER. THEN, VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION. *AK
VEHICLE WAS PARKED IN THE GARAGE AND CONSUMER SMELLED SMOKE. CONSUMER WENT TO THE GARAGE, AND UPON ARRIVING NOTICED THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN ON FIRE AND SMOLDERED OUT. *AK. VEHICLE WOULD NOT STEER. AAA TOWED VEHICLE REPAIR SHOP, AND MECHANIC DETERMINED THAT CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH WIRING BURNED, ALONG WITH FUSE AND BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH. *AK
DT: CONTACT STATED WHILE WIFE WAS DRIVING A 1998 FORD EXPEDITION A SPARK PLUG BLEW OUT FROM ENGINE. THE CONSUMER STATES WIFE HEARD A LOUD NOISE COMING FROM THE ENGINE AND THE VEHICLE KEPT RUNNING, BUT IT LOST POWER AND WAS MISFIRING. A CERTIFIED MECHANIC STATED THE NUMBER FOUR SPARK BLEW OUT ON THE PASSENGER SIDE DUE TO A DEFECTIVE CYLINDER HEAD. AND STATED THERE IS NOT ENOUGH THREAD ON THE BLOCK TO HOLD THE SPARK PLUG IN. THE CONSUMER STATES THIS HAS NEVER HAPPENED TO HIS VEHICLE BEFORE. THE VEHICLE HAS NOW BEEN REPAIRED BY HAVING METAL JACKETS PUT INTO THE CYLINDERS AND ALSO HAD THE CYLINDERS RETHREADED. THE SERVICE DEALER STATED IT WOULD COST APPROXIMATELY $2,000 TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE.
HEATER COIL WAS REPLACED FIVE TIMES. THE DEALER STATED THAT RADIO WAS MAKING THE PART DEFECTIVE. THE COIL WENT OUT AGAIN, AND THE VEHICLE WAS DOWN. MANUFACTURER STATED NO MORE REPLACEMENTS. *AK
THE CONSUMER'S 1998 FORD EXPEDITION CAUGHT ON FIRE WHILE PARKED IN THE GARAGE. *NM
BOTH OUTSIDE MIRRORS SEPARATED FROM THE OUTSIDE, MAKING VISUAL CONTACT VERY POOR. OWNER TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP BUT WAS INFORMED THAT BECAUSE THE VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY, THERE WAS NOTHING ELSE THEY COULD DO. *AK SIDEVIEW MIRRORD WERE DELAMINATING,CAUSING POOR VISIBILITY. *AK SIDE MIRRORS ARE DELAMINATING CAUSING POOR VISABILITY.*SB
WHILE DRIVING 5 MPH THE SPARE TIRE LOCATED UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE DISCONNECTED FROM THE VEHICLE AND FELL ONTO THE GROUND. DEALERSHIP WAS NOTIFIED, BUT DID NOT RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. *AK
'98 FORD EXPEDITION - CAR FIRE - CAR DESTROYED. DROVE 1.8 MILES FROM MY HOME AND WENT INTO A STORE. 5 MINUTES LATER I COME OUT TO THE CAR ON FIRE. IT LOOKED LIKE SOMEONE HAD BUILT A CAMPFIRE ON THE ENGINE HOOD RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE DRIVERS SIDE. INSURANCE DID INVESTIGATION BUT COULD NOT PROVE ANYTHING - NOT ENOUGH LEFT TO FIGURE IT OUT. *JB
VEHICLE PARKED APPROX 3 HOURS, FLAMES FRONT OF DASH AT WINDSHIELD, TRIED TO PUT OUT VEHICLE FIRE HIMSELF --- INJURED ---- NO PROBLEMS WITH VEHICLE PRIOR TO VEHICLE FIRE
ENGINE FAILURE. IN MY RESEARCH OF THE TYPE OF ENGINE IN MY VEHICLE, A 4.6L MADE IN THE ROMEO PLANT, HAVE FOUND THAT THERE HAS BEEN NUMEROUS PEOPLE THAT HAD THEIR MOTORS FAIL(BLOWN). I HAVE A FORD EXPEDITION 1998 WITH A 4.6L ENGINE AND THE 8TH DIGIT OF THE VIN # BEING A W FOR ROMEO PLANT. WHEN I CALLED IN EXCESS OF 20+ AUTO SALVAGE YARDS, I HAD GOTTEN THE SAME RESPONSE. THAT PARTICULAR ENGINE FROM THAT PARTICULAR PLANT WAS A PROBLEM. I WAS ALSO TOLD 1997 WAS THE SAME OCCURRENCE. UNFORTUNATELY, I OWE ALMOST $7000.00 ON THIS VEHICLE THAT I NOW CAN NOT DRIVE WITH OUT REPLACING OR REBUILDING THE ENGINE, WHICH WILL BE MORE THAN A COUPLE THOUSAND. I HAVE BEEN TOLD BY THESE MANY SALVAGE YARDS AND MY LOCAL FORD DEALER THE PROBLEM OCCURS WHEN ANTIFREEZE MAKES ITS WAY INTO THE OIL AND BURNS OUT THE MAIN BEARINGS. *JB
I JUST STARTED EXPERIENCING ABOUT 2 YEARS AGO ABOUT THE SAME PROBLEM DESCRIBED IN THE THE ASSOCIATED PRESS ARTICLE ON THE CNBC FINANCIAL WEB PAGE. DURING EXTREME PERIODS RAIN, DAMPNESS OR HIGH HUMIDITY, MY TRUCK WOULD NOT RUN CORRECTLY. IT STARTED OUT WITH THE SPEEDOMETER NOT WORKING (OR THE CRUISE CONTROL), BUT DROVE FINE DOWN THE ROAD. THEN AS TIME & MONTHS WENT ON THE SYMPTOMS SEEMED TO GET WORSE. BESIDES THE SPEEDOMETER NOT WORKING OR THE CRUISE CONTROL WHEN IT RAINED, THE TRANSMISSION STARTED NOT SHIFTING AT ITS NORMAL ''SHIFTING POINTS'' & THE OVERDRIVE LIGHT ON THE GEAR SHIFTER WOULD FLASH ON & OFF REPEATEDLY. WHEN IT WAS DRY OUT OR IF I USED THE FLOOR HEATER WHEN IT RAIN, IT WOULD RUN OK. THEN ONE DAY IN THE RAIN ALL THE ''IDIOT CLUSTER LIGHTS'' IN THE DASH WOULD ALL START FLASHING ON & OFF WITH A ''CLICKING OR SWITCHING'' SOUND FROM UNDER THE DASH. IT GOT TO A POINT DURING A HEAVY RAIN THAT ALL OF THE ABOVE WOULD HAPPEN AT THE SAME TIME OVER A 40 MILE DRIVE, & THE REAR WINDOW WIPER WOULD STOP WORKING IN MID-WIPE & THE VEHICLE WOULD START LOOSING POWER. AT THIS POINT I TOOK IT TO MY LOCAL FORD DEALER & TOLD THEM THE SAME THINGS. FINALLY AFTER THE 2 VISITS & ANOTHER HOUR TO HOUR & A HALF TO DIAGNOSE & TROUBLESHOOT THE PROBLEM THEY TOLD ME THAT MY WINDSHIELD WAS LEAKING SOMEWHERE & WAS CAUSING THE PROBLEM. THEY SAID FORD HAD A ''TSB'' TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN OUT. THEY FOUND BOTH THE ''GEM & CJB'' MODULES (PART #''S F852-14B205-KA & F752-14AD68-BA) UNDER THE DASH ALL ''WET & CORRODED'' & NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AT A COST OF $589.94 JUST FOR THE PARTS PLUS $74.95 HR. LABOR & A $7.50 HAZARDOUS WASTE FOR A REPAIR ORDER CHARGE. I TOOK MY TRUCK TO A LOCAL GLASS SHOP TO FIND THE LEAK & REPLACE THE SEAL. THEY DISCOVER THAT THE ''SEAL'' FOR THE WINDSHIELD WAS LEAKING AT THE TOP NEAR THE RAIN CUTTERS ON THE ROOF & RUNNING DOWN THE ''A'' PILLARS & WAS ALSO STARTING TO RUST THAT AREA NEAR THE SUPPORT STRUCTURE FOR THE GLASS.
THE ENGINE SHUT OFF WHILE BEING DRIVE. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE ISC VALVE WAS DEFECTIVE. *JB
THE PLUG BLEW OUT OF THE HEAD ON MY 1998 FORD EXPEDITION 5.4 LITER V8. HAS TO GO TO FORD, APPROX 2700 TO FIX, MY EXTENDED 3RD PARTY WARRANTY REFUSES TO COVER BECAUSE THEY SAY IT IS A MANUFACTURER DEFECT. FORD DISAGREES. I WILL HAVE TO PAY THIS. TOO MANY PEOPLE HAVE THIS SAME THING HAPPEN TO THEM . THERE ARE SEVERAL WEB SITES THAT DEAL WITH IT. EVEN THE 3RD PARTY EXTENDED WARRANTY COMPANY SAID THEY SEE IT ALL THE TIME ON THESE ENGINES. *NM
NEVADA TRAFFIC ACCIDENT REPORT. *NM THE CONSUMER WAS INVOLVED IN A ACCIDENT IN WHICH THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. *NM
VEHICLE WAS INVOLVED IN A FRONTAL COLLISION OF 35 MPH AND NEITHER FRONTAL AIR BAG DEPLOY. NO INJURIES WAS REPORTED AT THIS TIME AND THE DEALER WAS NOTIFIED. *NM THE CONSUMER STATED THAT SHE IS EXPERIENCING SOME ON GOING LIGAMENT AND NERVE DAMAGE IN HER BACK AND NECK. *TC
HAVING TROUBLE WITH MY SHIFT CABLE ASSEMBLY ON MY 1998 FORD EXPEDITION. THE NHSTA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 97V17100. I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO ORANGE FORD FOR REPAIRS. I WAS TOLD THAT THERE WAS NO SUCH RECALL ON MY VEHICLE BECAUSE OF THE VIN NUMBER. I CALL THE FORD HOTLINE ALSO AND WAS TOLD THE SAME. SEEMS TO ME IF THERE WAS A RECALL SEEM LIKE ALL FORD LIGHT DUTY TRUCKS AND MULTIPURPOSE PASSENGER VEHICLES WOULD HAVE BEEN INVOLVED.
WHILE PULLING INTO THE STREET FROM A PARKED POSITION A SPARK PLUG BLEW OUT. DEALER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. *AK
TRAVELING ON NEW PORTION OF I-670 MY REAR TIRE BLEW OUT. SUV HAS 52,000 MILES ON IT, THE TIRE THAT BLEW WAS THE ORIGINAL AND IT HAD 6,000 MILES ON IT. SPARE WAS PUT ON SUV OCT 30, 2003.*JB
WHILE PARKED VEHICLE CAUGHT ON FIRE IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. *AK
WHILE MY 1998 FORD EXPEDITION WAS PARKED IN DRIVE WAY, IT CAUGHT ON FIRE UNDER THE HOOD WITHOUT ANY TYPE OF WARNING. THE FIRE WAS PUT OUT BY MY HUSBAND AND OUR NEIGHBORS, ONLY TO REIGN NIGHT AGAIN. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS CALLED TO THE SCENE AND WAS ABLE TO PUT IT OUT FOR GOOD.*AK
RECALL CAMPAIGN 05V017000 CONCERNING CRUISE CONTROL FIRE. VEHICLE WAS PARKED IN THE DRIVEWAY WHEN THE NEIGHBORS INFORMED CONSUMER THAT THE VEHICLE WAS ON FIRE. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT RESPONDED, AND THE VEHICLE WAS TOTALED. THIS VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL DUE TO VIN. *AK *TT
THE TURN SIGNAL INDICATORS FAILED. A RECALL WAS ISSUED. HOWEVER, THIS VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL DUE TO VIN. *AK THE VEHICLE'S WIPER ALSO FAILED. *NM
WHILE DRIVING 55 MPH OR MORE VEHICLE COMMENCED TO LOSE STEERING CONTROL. VEHICLE HAD BEEN TO THE DEALER ON TWO SEPARATE OCCASIONS. DEALER REPLACED COMPRESSOR PUMP TWICE, BUT PROBLEM RECURRED. *AK
1998 EXPEDITION. FIRE CONCENTRATED IN LEFT REAR CORNER OF ENGINE COMPARTMENT IN VICINITY OF CRUISE CONTROL DEACTIVATION SWITCH. THE 15 AMP FUSE FOR THAT CIRCUIT WAS BLOWN. XRAYS OF THE SWITCH HEAD SHOWED TOTAL DESTRUCTION OF THE BRASS CONTACTS INSIDE EVEN THOUGH THE OUTER SHELL WAS STILL RELATIVELY IN TACT.
CONSUMER HEARD A SOUND WHILE STEERING THE VEHICLE. IT WAS A THUMPING SOUND. DEALER STATED THAT IT SOUNDED LIKE TIE ROD FAILURE . DEALER ADVISED CONSUMER THAT TIE ROD WAS DEFECTIVE AND WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED.*AK
CONSUMER'S VEHICLE WAS INVOLVED IN A COLLISION AND THE PASSENGER'S SEAT BELT DID NOT HOLD. THE PASSENGER SUSTAINED A SHOULDER INJURY.*AK
MY COMPLAINT IS THAT I OWN A 1998 EXPEDITION AND IT IS NOW IN THE SHOP BECAUSE I HAD TO HAVE THE TRANSMISSION REBUILT, IS THERE OR WAS THERE EVER A RECALL ON THESE TRANSMISSIONS. I AM SURPRISED THAT THE TRANSMISSION WOULD HAVE TO BE REBUILT IN THIS CAR.*JB

THIS VEHICLE EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM AS MENTIONED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN 97V171000. LIGHT DUTY PICKUP TRUCKS AND MULTI-PURPOSE PASSENGER VEHICLES. IF THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SHIFT CABLE ASSEMBLY WAS NOT FULLY ATTACHED TO THE STEERING COLUMN BRACKET, THE SHIFT CABLE ASSEMBLY CAN COME OUT OF THE BRACKET. DEALERSHIP INDICATED TO THE CONSUMER, YES YOU HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM DUE TO VIN NOT BEING INCLUDED IN THIS RECALL. *AK
WHILE PARKING SPARE TIRE RACK BOLTS LOCATED UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE SNAPPED. THIS CAUSED THE SPARE TIRE TO FALL TO THE GROUND. DEALERSHIP WAS NOTIFIED,BUT DID NOT RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. *AK
WHILE VEHICLE WAS PARKED REAR PASSENGER SIDE TIRE BLEW OUT. DEALERSHIP WAS NOTIFIED, BUT DID NOT RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. BIG-O, LT26570R17. *AK
ENGINE AT IDLE FOR A PERIOD OF TIME HEARD A POP AND FOUND THAT SPARK PLUG HAD BLOWN OUT OF THE HEAD UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION FOUND OUT THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE FORD TRITON V8 ENGINE. *JB
WE WERE ON VACATION JUNE 27, 2004 AND OUR 1998 FORD EXPEDITION BROKE DOWN 15 MILES OUTSIDE OF FLAGSTAFF, AZ. WE WERE TOWED TO AAMCO TRANSMISSIONS, WHOM AFTER GETTING AUTHORIZATION FROM OUR SERVICE CONTRACT TO CHECK OUR TRUCK FOUND THAT A SEAL GASKET IN OUR TRANSFER CASE HAD MELTED AND ALL THE OIL RAN OUT. THESE ARE SUPPOSED TO BE COVERED FOR 150,000 MILES, OUR TRUCK IS AT 92,184 MILES. I HAVE A SERVICE CONTRACT COVERING ME FOR 96,000 MILES. THEY REFUSED TO FIX IT BECAUSE THEY SAID IT WAS TAMPERED WITH FIRST, THEN THEY SAID THE TRANSMISSION WASN'T COVERED, THEN IT WAS BECAUSE WE DROVE IT WITH NO OIL. AAMCO TOLD THEM US THE PART WAS COVERED UNDER OUR SERVICE CONTRACT BUT THAT THEY GET THIS ALOT FROM SERVICE CONTRACTS WHERE THEY DON'T WANT TO PAY FOR THE WORK. AAMCO ALSO SAID THAT THESE TRUCKS DO NOT HAVE INDICATORS ON THE TRANSFER CASES TO SHOW THAT ANYTHING IS GOING WRONG OR THAT OIL IS LEAKING. WE HAVE NEVER HAD PROBLEMS. OUR R OIL LEVELS WERE CHECKED ON JUNE 25TH BEFORE TAKING OFF FOR VACATION AND EVERYTHING WAS FINE. WE HAVE NEVER HAD LEAKS. WE HAD 3 OF OURYOUNG GRANDCHILDREN WITH US. WE WERE DRIVING ON A FREEWAY AND OUR TRUCK JUST STARTED SLOWING DOWN REALLY FAST AND WERE LUCKY THERE WERE NOT MANY CARS AT THAT TIME SO WE COULD PULL OFF THE SIDE OF THE FREEWAY. SO YOU CAN SEE THAT THIS THING COULD LEAD TO ACCIDENTS IF SOMEONE IS DRIVING AND ALL OF A SUDDEN YOUR VEHICLE SLOWS DOWN IN HEAVY, FAST TRAFFIC BECAUSE YOU HAVE NO WAY OF KNOWING THIS IS HAPPENING OR ANYTHING IS HAPPENING WITH YOUR TRUCK. WE ARE HAVING THIS FIXED AT OUR EXPENSE, SEAL GASKET IN THE TRANSFER CASE?, $1700 + $240 LABOR TO CHECK IT AND TAKE IT APART. I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER SERVICE CONTRACT AFTER THIS ON A USED VEHICLE. I BOUGHT MY TRUCK FROM CHAPMAN CHEVROLET WHO SINCE CHANGED THEIR NAME TO FREEWAY CHEVROLET IN CHANDLER, AZ AND THEY WERE NOT WILLING TO HELP ME WITH THIS SERVICE CONTRACT WHICH I BOUGHT FROM THEM.*AK
ON MY 1998 FORD EXPEDITION THE SPARK PLUG BLEW OUT OF THE ENGINE. THE FORD COMPANY WILL NOT SAY THAT THE ENGINE HAS A DEFECT. THE SPARK PLUGS ARE STILL THE SAME ONES THAT CAME WITH THE TRUCK NEW. I HAD MY INFANT SON IN THE CAR WHEN THIS OCCURRED, AND THIS MISHAP PUT US IN NEEDLESS PERIL. CAR IS IN REPAIR STILL AND FORD IS NOT TREATING THIS LIKE AN ENGINE DEFECT. I SEE MANY ONLINE POSTS FROM OTHER FORD OWNERS WHO EXPERIENCED THIS SAME PROBLEM. THIS SITUATION COULD HAVE CAUSED DEATH OR SERIOUS INJURY. GASOLINE WAS FUMES WERE STRONG AND THE ENGINE COULD HAVE CAUGHT ON FIRE. *AK
ON JUNE 23, 2004 MY 1998 FORD EXPEDITION WAS TOWED TO A DEALER BECAUSE I BLEW A SPARK PLUG. I WAS TOLD THAT IT WOULD COST OVER $2700.00 TO GET IT FIXED. THEY SAID IT WAS BECAUSE THE SPARK PLUG WOULD ONLY BLOW OUT AGAIN AND I NEEDED A NEW HEAD COVERING. THE SERVICE MANAGER SAID THAT THIS WAS A COMMON OCCURRENCE ON THE ALUMINUM HEADS. MY QUESTION OR RATHER MY COMPLAINT IS THAT I AM ANGRY ABOUT THE RESPONSE FROM THE SERVICE MANAGER AND FROM THE FORD FRONT OFFICE. IF FORD KNOWS THAT THIS IS A COMMON OCCURRENCE THEN WHY SHOULD THE CONSUMER BE LIABLE FOR SOMETHING THAT FORD KNOWS IS A PROBLEM. AM PRETTY UPSET ABOUT THIS AS FORD KNOWS THIS HAPPENS AND THERE HASN'T BEEN A RECALL. WHY ISN'T THERE A RECALL IF THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE HEAD COVERINGS?? THE VEHICLE STARTED TO MAKE A NOISE, WHEN THE CONSUMER WAS DRIVING. THE DEALER STATED THE UPPER CAMSHAFT SENSOR HAD BROKEN. THEN A MONTH LATER THE LOWER CAMSHAFT SENSOR BROKE. THE MANUFACTURE STATED THE WARRANTY DOES NOT APPLY AFTER MILEAGE HAS BECOME TO HIGH. *NM *NM
SEPARATION OF TIRE TREAD FROM TIRE LEADING TO SUBSTANTIAL CAR BODY DAMAGE. AK
WITHOUT WARNING VEHICLE STALLED. CONSUMER HAD TO COAST OFF THE ROAD. CONSUMER HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE DEALER, AND MECHANIC DETERMINED THAT ENGINE HEAD GASKET FAILED, CAUSING THE ENGINE TO MALFUNCTION. *AK BOTH HEAD GASKET BLEW AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. *TS
WHILE DRIVING CONSUMER HEARD A LOUD KNOCKING NOISE COMING FROM THE FRONT. THE CONSUMER WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER AND INSPECTED THE VEHICLE. THE CONSUMER NOTICED THAT THE SPARK PLUG FROM THE PASSENGER SIDE BLEW OUT. THE CONSUMER CONTACTED THE DEALER, AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE CYLINDER HEAD NEEDED TO BE REPLACED DUE TO A BLOW OUT. *AK THE CONSUMER FOUND THAT MANY OTHERS EXPERIENCED THIS SAME PROBLEM WITH THE 5.4 AND THE 4.6 FORD ENGINES. THE PROBLEM WAS FOUND TO BE A DEFECT IN THE HEADS NOT HAVING ENOUGH THREADS TO HOLD THE PLUGS IN. FORD WOULD NOT ASSIST IN THE REPAIR, EVEN THOUGH THEY RECENTLY REDESIGNED THE HEADS TO PREVENT THE PROBLEM. *SC
STABILIZER BAR BROKE WHILE BACKING OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY. AS A RESULT, THE FRONT END COLLAPSED TO THE GROUND. *AK
1998 FORD EXPEDITION SPARKPLUG EJECTION. *TR
FORD NEEDS TO RECALL THE 1998 YEAR EXPEDITION. I BOUGHT MY VEHICLE NEW AND HAVE TO DATE REPLACED A BLOWN SPARK PLUG AND APPROXIMATELY 5 BLOWN COIL PACKS. FORD TELLS ME THE INSTALLATION OF THE COIL PACKS WERE NOT MOISTURE PROTECTED THEREFORE WHEN THE COIL RECEIVES MOISTURE THEY BLOW. THERE IS 8 COIL PACKS IN A VEHICLE AT A COST OF APPROXIMATELY $377 PER COIL. HOW CAN WE GET THESE RECALLED? IF YOU DID A SEARCH OF ALL FORD DEALERSHIPS AND SEE HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE HAD COIL PACKS AND SPARKS PLUGS REPLACED YOU WOULD SEE THERE IS A DEFINITE PROBLEM. PLEASE HELP WITH THIS! *LA
WHILE DRIVING 30 MPH, A LOUD KNOCKING NOISE WAS HEARD COMING FROM THE FRONT, THEN VEHICLE STALLED. CONSUMER TRIED TO RESTART VEHICLE BUT WAS UNABLE TO DO SO. CONSUMER HAD VEHICLE TOWED TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION, AND MECHANIC DETERMINED THAT THE THIRD SPARK PLUG BLEW OUT, AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. DRIVER INFORMED THE MECHANIC THAT THIS PROBLEM OCCURRED MORE THAN ONCE. *AK
DRIVING ONE DAY AND HEARD A LOUD POP THEN NO RESPONSE OR POWER FROM THE ENGINE.A CERTIFIED MECHANIC SAID THAT THE 3RD SPARK PLUG WAS BLOWN OUT OF THE HEAD AND THE ACKNOWLEDGED THAT THIS IS A COMMON THING IN THESE TYPE OF ENGINES. I ALSO TALKED TO THE DEALER THAT I BOUGHT THIS JOKE OF A VEHICLE FROM AND THEY SAID THAT THEY GET THESE KIND OF REPAIRS IN ALL THE TIME - DOMINO FORD IN MIDLOTHIAN IL. I TALKED TO FORD MOTOR CO. CONSUMER COMPLAINTS AND ALL THEY SAID WAS "SIR THERE IS NO RECALL ON YOUR'E VEHICLE AND THEY SAID HAVE A NICE DAY. THE MECHANIC SAID THEY WOULD PUT IN A INSERT OR HELI COIL AND THAT IT MIGHT WORK BUT AFTER SCANNING THE INTERNET THERE IS ALL KINDS OF COMPLAINTS OUT THERE WITH THIS EXACT KIND OF PROBLEM WITH THE FORD PICKUPS , VANS AND SUV'S THAT HAVE THIS TRITON ENGINE. FORD WON'T ACKNOWLEDGE THIS BECAUSE THEY KNOW THAT UNDER A RECALL IT WILL COST THEM A LOT TO FIX THIS OBVIOUS MANUFACTURER DEFECT. OF THE COMPLAINTS THAT I READ AND TALKING TO MY MECHANIC THEY ALL MENTION THAT THE THREADS THAT HOLD THE SPARK PLUGS ARE NOT LONG OR DEEP ENOUGH TO CONTAIN THE SPARK PLUG FOR GOOD. FOR 40K PRICE TAG FORD MOTOR CO. SHOULD REPLACE THE ENGINES IN THESE VEHICLES. DO WE HAVE TO WAIT FOR SOMEONE TO SACRIFICE THEIR LIFE FOR THIS TO GET RECTIFIED? JUST LIKE THE TIRE ISSUES. IF SOMEONE DOES DIE DUE TO THIS DEFECT I WILL BE THE FIRST TO COME FORWARD ON THIS ON WHEN I COMPLAINED AND THAT NOTHING WAS DONE. PEOPLES LIVES SHOULD NOT BE RISKED TO LINE FORDS POCKETS. IF YOU SUE THEM THEY WILL DRAG IT OUT SO LONG BECAUSE THEY MADE 40K A VEHICLE ON THIS MODEL ALONE AND THEY WILL DRAG IT OUT UNTIL YOU CAN'T PAY FOR HELP ANYMORE.
