TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 FORD EXPEDITION EQUIPPED WITH CONTINENTAL CONTITRAC TR TIRES, SIZED 265/70/R17 WITH A DOT NUMBER OF A3T645RW. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 70 MPH, THE TREAD ON THE DRIVERS SIDE REAR TIRE SEPARATED AND THE CONTACT BEGAN TO LOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. AS A RESULT, EXTENSIVE DAMAGED WAS INFLICTED ON THE REAR BUMPED AND TAIL LIGHTS. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO REGAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THERE WERE NO RECALLS FOR THE STATED TIRES. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 60,000.
WHILE DRIVING MY 2006 FORD EXPEDITION ON THE HIGHWAY, THERE WAS A COMPLETE THREAD SEPARATION IN ONE OF THE REAR TIRES, (CONTINENTAL, CONTITRAC SUV, P265-70R17), THE TRIMMING BEHIND THE TIRE WELL WAS DAMAGED. THE VEHICLE'S ODOMETER REGISTERS 43,993 MILES. *TR
2006 FORD EXPEDITION (LAW ENFORCEMENT PACKAGE) WITH STEEL WHEELS AND APPROX. 120,000 MILES; WHEEL SEPARATION (CRACKED ALONG WELD). PRIOR TO THE FAILURE, THIS VEHICLE WAS USED DAILY FOR ROUTINE LAW ENFORCEMENT PATROL DUTIES. WE HAVE HAD THIS ISSUE ON SEVERAL 2006 EXPEDITIONS. UPON LEARNING OF THE POTENTIAL FOR THE WHEEL FAILURE, WE HAVE IMPLEMENTED PROCEDURES TO INSPECT THE WHEELS FOR CRACKS AND OTHER DAMAGE REGULARLY. IN ALL CASES, THERE HAVE BEEN NO OBVIOUS WARNING SIGNS BEFORE FAILURE. THIS PROBLEM WAS DISCOVERED WHEN THE OFFICER NOTICED A FLAT TIRE PRIOR TO STARTING HIS SHIFT FOR THE DAY. UPON FINDING THE CRACKED WHEEL A NEW REPLACEMENT WHEEL WAS INSTALLED ON THE VEHICLE. *TR

AFTER REPORT 10307412, WE COMPLETED A FLEET WIDE INSPECTION OF FORD VEHICLES WITH STEEL WHEELS. THIS IS THE 4TH INCIDENT OF THIS NATURE TO OCCUR WITHIN 2 YEARS. THE OTHER 3 TIMES THE FAILURE OCCURRED ON OTHER FORD EXPEDITIONS. REPORTS WERE FILED HERE. SEE COMPLAINT 10286279, 10307412. BASED ON PRIOR 3 FAILURES, A UNIT-08 FOREST WIDE INSPECTION OF FORD VEHICLES WITH STEEL WHEELS IS UNDERWAY. I CURRENTLY HAVE TWO RIMS WITH TYPICAL RIM FAILURE AT THE BEAD FACE WELD FROM TWO DIFFERENT VEHICLES. PLEASE ADVISE IF PHOTO DOCUMENTATION IS REQUIRED. AFTER INSPECTION BY FORD TECHNICIAN, ALL 4 WHEELS WERE REPLACED. LOW DRIVER SIDE TIRE INDICATOR SOUNDED A FEW HOURS PRIOR TO ACCIDENT WHERE VEHICLE FLIPPED OVER 4 TIMES 70-80 FEET END OVER END BOUNCED OFF A TELEPHONE POLE THEN LANDED IN THE OPPOSITE LANE BACK WARDS. THE LOW TIRE INDICATOR HAD GONE OFF TWICE TO WHICH THE TIRE WAS TAKEN TO THE STATION TO BE REFILLED UP TO AIR PRESSURE AS RECOMMENDED BY THE SERVICE MANUAL. DRIVING SPEED WAS CLOSE TO 50 MPH ON A SLIGHTLY RURAL ROAD WITH NOT MANY TURNS MOSTLY STRAIGHTAWAYS. JUST COMING OUT OF A SMALL RIGHT TURN THE TIRE MUST HAVE LOST AIR JERKED THE STEERING CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO ROLL OVER END OVER END CARTWHEELING AND LANDING IN 4 SPOTS ACCORDING TO TIRE MARKS ON THE ROAD ITSELF EACH DOUBLE LINED MARK WAS ON THE CENTER LINE OF THE ROAD ABOUT 70-80 FEET APART BEFORE HITTING THE POLE AND BOUNCING THE VEHICLE INTO THE OPPOSITE LANE FACING THE OTHER DIRECTION. WHERE UPON AIDE OF OTHERS IT COULD NOT BE RESTARTED AND THE DRIVERS SIDE TIRE WAS COMPLETELY UNUSABLE. THE VEHICLE BROKE OUT 3 WINDOWS AND THE WINDSHIELD IS WASTED, CAN BE STARTED BUT GRINDS WHEN PUT IN GEAR, CAN NOT BE DRIVEN EVEN AFTER TIRE REPLACEMENT. *TR

A 17" TIRE RIM ON A 2006 FORD EXPEDITION HAS FAILED FOR THE SECOND TIME. THE FIRST FAILED RIM WAS REPLACED BY FORD MOTOR CO. WITH A NEW RIM AND NOW ONLY A COUPLE OF MONTHS LATER THIS SECOND RIM HAS FAILED. THE WELD HAS FAILED ON THE RIM CAUSING SEPARATION AND A SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD FOR ANY VEHICLE OCCUPANTS. *TR

THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE REAR DRIVER SIDE TIRE WOULD CONTINUOUSLY FLATTEN EVEN AFTER REFILLING IT WITH AIR. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE TIRES WERE NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 05T022000 (TIRES:TREAD/BELT) ALTHOUGH SHE WAS EXPERIENCING THE SAME FAILURE. AFTER INSPECTING THE TIRE, THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE SEAM WAS SEPARATING FROM THE TIRE. PRIOR TO OPERATING THE VEHICLE, THE TIRE PRESSURE WAS NORMAL AND THE TIRE TREAD WAS 5/30 SECONDS. THE TIRES HAVE NOT BEEN REPLACED. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 23,000. UPDATED 02/12/08. *LJ THE CONSUMER STATED ALL 4 TIRES WERE REPLACED AND THEY WERE ONLY A YEAR OLD.
