NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2019 Ford Expedition. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
Had a passenger in my vehicle and the seatbelt would open/work. I took my vehicle to Confidence Ford in Norman,OK and was told the second row passenger seat lower retractor assembly needs to be replaced and it was not covered by the recall/warranty.
Torch Converter was changed 1 1/2 years ago and now the CDF drum is going out, causing hard shifting and skipping shifts. This dangerous as the primary family driver to transport our children and the pause in shifting attempting to merge on the interstate is very dangerous and could ultimately lead to death if there is oncoming and if shifts hard or pauses with shifting when merging.
My transmission feels as if it is skipping. It feels as if the truck is going to stop while driving. Making it very dangerous and unsafe for my children and myself. The two codes that a scanner gave were P0732:00-6D and P07F7:00-6D. Please help with this. My truck is not even that old nor is high on mileage. Thank you.
Less than a week from purchase , I was on the freeway doing 70 MPH and the sunroof exploded on us for absolutely no reason. I had just dropped off my [XXX] son , Had he been in the vehicle with his [XXX] brother and this happened I would be pursuing a lawsuit ! 10R80 Transmission issues. Hard shifting, lunging forward, irradic shifting on highway, hard shifting between 3rd and 4th gear which causes the vehicle to lunge forward. Near full transmission failure on highway. Excessive loss of power and erratic shifting. Had to pull over in the highway. Mechanic states a new transmission is needed.
I got an oil change 12/20/2025 and was told I have an oil leak coming from under the timing cover. An estimated expense of $4000 to repair. My vehicle is newer, 2019 and only has 77,000 miles on it. This issue shouldn’t be happening to a newer car.
My engine makes a loud rattling noise upon start up and then a more discreet rattling while driving because of the cam phaser.
While driving, the vehicle experiences a sudden loss of power, after which the transmission goes into what feels like a false neutral. It then violently re-engages and accelerates uncontrollably without driver input. This is an extremely dangerous situation and presents a major safety risk to us and to others on the road. Fortunately, we were able to avoid a crash, but this could have easily resulted in a serious accident. The vehicle was initially brought to the dealership for an A/C issue, and at that time we asked that this transmission concern also be inspected. We were informed that the dealership could not replicate the problem. Since then, the issue has become more frequent and more severe. We have now been told that we can drop the vehicle off, but that it may take 3–4 weeks or longer before diagnostics even begin, and that we would be responsible for out-of-pocket rental car costs during this time. We were also told that because the issue could not previously be replicated, this would now be considered customer pay, despite the fact that this is a serious powertrain and safety-related issue. We find this unacceptable. This is not a convenience issue—it is a known concern with Ford’s 10-speed transmissions, and it places our safety at risk every time the vehicle is driven. We have opened a case with Ford in hopes that assistance will be provided, including: Proper diagnosis and repair of the transmission issue Coverage of related repair costs Assistance with a rental vehicle while the SUV is being evaluated, as it is currently unsafe to drive We trust Ford to stand behind its product and take this issue seriously before someone is injured.
The passenger side headlight DRL is fading and does not appear to be as bright and pronounced as the driver side DRL. This vehicle has the LED headlights and fog lights.
Regularly experience violet jerking into gream and slipping/gear hunting. often times on the highway, which leads to unsafe speed changes
The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while driving 50 MPH, the contact heard a loud bang noise coming from the left driver's side, and afterwards her seat belt retracted independently, causing the contact to have bruising to her left collarbone. There was an unknown odor present during the failure. The contact stated that the seat belt performed as if the vehicle were involved in an impact; however, there was no impact. An Independent mechanic was contacted. The vehicle was not taken to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and offered no assistance. The approximate mileage was 93,672.
I have a recall for my seatbelt that my local Ford dealership still has been completed. I've been waiting for months and they tell me the parts aren't available yet. I researched these parts online and they show that they are indeed available for my 2019 Ford Expedition limited MAX. I'm leaving for a 4,000 mile vacation on 2/19/2026 and would like this RECALL taken care of before I leave [XXX] [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, there was an abnormally loud sound coming from the transmission. The transmission was slipping, and the RPM was abnormally elevated. There were several unknown warning lights illuminated, and the engine overheated. The vehicle was driven to the residence. The contact stated that the failure reoccurred. While driving at an undisclosed speed, the engine overheated again. The coolant reservoir was refilled with five gallons of coolant. The engine continued to overheat, and the coolant reservoir was continuously refilled. The contact stated that on one occasion, the contact and her husband were stranded at the side of the road in the freezing cold for two hours. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed with the driver's front wheel bearings and sensors failures. The contact was informed that the wheel bearings failure was the cause of the failure because the transmission was unable to perform as designed. The contact was informed that the driver's side front-wheel bearing, and all the sensors needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, and a case was filed. The failure mileage was approximately 145,000.
I don't know if there's issues with rearing was driving when we felt like another car had puh up forward an happen twice just several minutes apart felt like brakes were stuck while driving or like rear end was shifting weird I can still hear like a tapping somewhere in motor sent it to be fix where we bought it before warranty was expired but they really just screwed up my ac an couldn't fix because warranty expired had to fix it ourself out of pocket money all were asking is for dealers to send there recalls all to have it fixed I don't want to pay for a vehicle we can't trust in town or out of town plus we were at Dr appt in Odessa tx 11/3/2025 an we did notice something like with brakes like licking a little
When you try to accelerate quickly, even when you’re switching lanes on the interstate or just driving down the road, the car will sometimes pop out of gear or something and almost comes to a complete stop causing you to almost get rear ended. I’ve almost been hit several times because the car stops and won’t go.
The contact called on behalf of a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while he was driving his 2017 Kia Rio at 10-20 MPH, and approaching a red traffic light, the 2019 Ford Expedition that was driving approximately 60 MPH crashed into the rear of the contact's vehicle. The contact sustained neck and head injuries and was transported to the hospital by ambulance. The contact was informed that the injuries had aggravated the contact's underlying spinal injury. The contact was advised to undergo an emergency surgery. The air bags of the contact's vehicle did not deploy. The contact's vehicle was towed to a tow yard, where it was totaled. A police report was filed, and the report stated that the driver of the 2019 Ford Expedition advised that the vehicle crashed into the contact's vehicle due to brake failure. The other driver sustained unknown injuries and was also transported to the hospital by ambulance. No further information was available.
The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that after parking the vehicle and with the engine idling, the front passenger side seat belt pretensioner erroneously deployed, causing the passenger to be forcefully retracted into the seat. During the incident, an explosion had occurred, and smoke filled the cabin of the vehicle. The contact sustained an injured neck during the seat belt deployment. No medical treatment was required. After the incident, the air bag warning light had remained illuminated. The cause of the failure was not determined. The contact indicated that the failure had previously occurred on the front driver's side seat belt, also. The manufacturer and local dealer were notified of the failure. The contact was informed that the VIN was not included in the NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V197000(SEAT BELTS). The contact indicated that the vehicle had experienced the same failure listed in the recall. The failure mileage was 135,000.
LED daytime running lights have failed and turned blue on one side. This issue appears to affect many vehicles of the same make and model. DRLs are a piece of safety equipment that makes the vehicle more visible to others, and as such, should be in proper working order.
I was driving and the seatbelt exploded. Started smelling like it was burning super loud explosion It’s a good thing I didn't crash and hit somebody . I’ve never had anything like that in my life happen before.
After Ford Recall 24E13 (Powertrain Control Module reprogramming) was completed on my 2019 Ford Expedition Max, the vehicle immediately developed transmission problems. It began hesitating to go into reverse and then produced DTC P0736 (reverse gear ratio incorrect). Within days, it failed to shift properly and was returned by the dealership. The issue occurred only after the recall repair, indicating a possible calibration or programming fault that affected the powertrain. Ford dealership staff acknowledged metal in the fluid but gave inconsistent explanations and then claimed the transmission had to be replaced. The vehicle also displayed a “Powertrain System Fault” warning. No such problems existed before the recall. This raises a safety concern because transmission malfunction after a recall could cause loss of control or failure to move the vehicle. The vehicle was returned to us on October 7, 2025; it remains unsafe to drive. Ford Corporate has been notified (Case CXH-05773791-T4G0R8), but no resolution has been provided. I am requesting NHTSA review this as a potential post-recall powertrain safety failure related to Recall 24E13.
My 2019 Ford Expedition started making some loud noises while accelerating and wouldn’t accelerate as usual when I pressed the gas pedal — there was a noticeable delay in gear shifting and acceleration. Often when I did shift gears, there would be a very loud clunking sound. It got much worse over the course of several days. At one point, I was on the highway and needed to accelerate quickly to maneuver around other vehicles —I pressed the gas and there was no acceleration— the vehicle just stayed at the current speed and it was a couple beats before the vehicle responded to me pressing down hard in the gas pedal. It did finally accelerate, but it was very delayed. It was a very unsafe experience. I have since learned there is a known issue with the transmission on these vehicles that causes this issue.
The Cam Phaser failed in 2023 and 2025. It kept the vehicle from starting. The transmission has failed twice in the past two years.
Ford 10 speed automatic transmission. Driving at highway speeds the vehicle suddenly went into limp mode. This dropped the vehicle speed from 70 mph to 20 mph without warning. A flashing wrench indicator light on the dash illuminated. A grinding noise coming from underneath the vehicle occurred. Our vehicle has an extended warranty. The vehicle was dropped off at the dealership it was purchased from. Dealership stated the separator plate inside the transmission was defective and needed replaced. The work was completed and the vehicle has been returned to us. This could have caused a significant accident on the freeway. Luckily with experienced drivers this was avoided.
2019 Ford Expedition Max with the 10R80 transmission experienced severe shifting issues shortly after PCM recall 24E13 was performed. The recall involves PCM/TCM updates and adaptive shift strategy reset. After the recall, the vehicle developed shuddering, harsh shifting, flaring between gears, and delayed engagement. Dealer diagnosis found internal transmission damage including CDF hub sleeve axial movement and No. 3 sun gear shell seal failure, along with diagnostic code P07E6. These failures are known on the 10R80, but the issue escalated immediately after the recall update. Transmission required a full overhaul. Concern that the recall calibration and adaptive strategy reset may accelerate internal wear or exacerbate pre-existing vulnerabilities in the 10R80 transmission.
Yesterday, while I was driving to pick up my kids from school, my 2019 Ford Expedition, the driver’s side seatbelt literally exploded — it went off like it would in a crash (but there was no crash). I was driving when it exploded and tightened so tight on me. Now the seatbelt doesn’t work at all. It was terrifying, so loud and painful. This is part of a known recall issue. When the dealership had my car back in May to replace my cam phasers, they told me the seatbelt recall parts weren’t available yet. Fast forward to now — the seatbelt has gone off, the vehicle can’t be driven safely, and Ford (both the local dealership and customer service) is saying there’s nothing they can do for me right now. The dealership told me I would have to pay to have it towed and pay for a rental. Also, they aren’t sure how fast they can get parts or diagnose it. I’m honestly at a loss. This is a safety recall, and I can’t use my car because of it. I literally just paid $2400 in may for my cam phasers and now this.
The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 35 MPH with the driver's seat belt fastened, she observed a loud explosion inside the vehicle, and then she felt what she thought was an impact to her chest, and the wind was knocked out of her as she began gasping for air. The contact stated that she believed she had been shot. The contact added that she steered the vehicle to the side of the road and where she observed that the driver's seat belt did not extend or retract, and the air bag warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that after 20 minutes, she observed a swollen imprint of the seat belt, which eventually scabbed over. 911 was called, but Medical attention was not needed. The contact stated that she continues to drive the vehicle, but had to buckle the seat belt behind her while driving so that the notification chimes do not go off continuously while driving. The vehicle was taken to a dealer, where it was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 135,000.
Seatbelt pretensioner inadvertently exploded while driving the vehicle and locked the seatbelt
The 10 Speed Transmission, also known as 10R80, is absolutely horrible and should be banned. I have had Ford rebuild the transmission more than once and also fully replaced with multiple shop visit with other trans issues. Constant jerking, poor shifting, delayed gear recognition, slipping gears while going highway speeds, are all causes for great concern. I am worried all the time that I may get in an accident with one of the skipping that occurs several times monthly. This Trans must be fully recalled due to its safety! This is a major safety issue. Who wants to pay $90,000.00 on a car to have constant transmission issues and jerky driving? This jerking has been worsening again lately and worried I need another trans repair. This happened again today which brings me to this complaint as Ford wont fiix the issue, needing a new style trans altogether!
The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while his wife was driving on a neighborhood road at an undisclosed speed, the steering wheel seized. There were no warning lights illuminated. The driver proceeded to pull over, and the vehicle was towed to a local dealer to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the electronic steering control module was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 58,000.
The transmission is clunking and hard shifting causing the car to not just go when you accelerate. The car stutters and takes a minute to actually go when you press the accelerator. This has caused multiple times where pulling out of a parking lot has been dangerous since I can’t properly get up and go when need be. I had a mechanic look at my car and he confirmed my transmission needs to be replaced. There was no warning signs or messages about the failure.
The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition Max. The contact stated that after the wife started the vehicle and while the gear shifter was in the parked position, the front driver's side seatbelt pretensioner erroneously deployed. During the incident, the wife sustained a left shoulder abrasion, which required medical treatment. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, but the cause of the failure was not yet determined. The contact was informed that the VIN was included in the NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V099000(SEAT BELTS). The contact indicated that the vehicle had experienced the same failure listed in the recall. The failure mileage was 90,000.
The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated while driving 50 MPH, there was a rattling sound coming from the engine. The contact pulled over to side of the road, turned off and restarted the vehicle and the vehicle started to operate as intended. The check engine warning light was illuminated. An independent mechanic was contacted. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed and determined that the cam phaser needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but offered no assistance. The contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 150,000.
On [XXX], the seatbelt pretensioner on my 2019 Ford Expedition MAX Platinum suddenly discharged without warning while the vehicle was stationary. It emitted a loud noise, caused the seatbelt to lock, and released a strong burning smell, consistent with prior reports linked to recall 24V099 / 25V197000. I purchased this vehicle used on [XXX] from Taverna Infiniti of North Miami (FL). At the time of sale, the dealership: •Did not disclose any active recalls •Provided an inspection form stating the seatbelt and warning systems were “OK” •Sold the vehicle with an illuminated airbag (SRS) warning light •Delivered the vehicle with a non-functional driver-side tail light Four days later ([XXX]), the dealer sent me a Carfax report showing the vehicle had an active NHTSA safety recall (24V099), issued in February 2024, with a known remedy available. The dealership knowingly sold a vehicle with an unrepaired safety defect, and the defect has now resulted in an actual pretensioner discharge — which could pose a fire risk and compromised occupant protection. I am currently working to have the vehicle serviced at a Ford-authorized dealer. I am reporting this event to document: •The failure of the seatbelt pretensioner •The dealer’s noncompliance with safety disclosure obligations •The risk posed to other consumers INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Passenger air bag light came on and passenger seat belt locked up also the transmission had to be fixed
The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while starting the vehicle, there was an abnormal clattering and clanking sound coming from the engine. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact stated that the failure was a known issue with the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed with engine failure and cam phaser rattle. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and opened a case. The failure mileage was approximately 115,000.
Catalytic converter signaled efficiency is low after the Emissions Recall 24 E 13 had been fixed 2025. There are 5 other expeditions in the dealership with the exact same problem. Had recall fixed one month later check engine light came on. Same problem emissions signal. Ford won’t fix it as they claim “it would have been caught during inspections of the vehicle when they run codes during any kind of service.” Even though it would not have been because the recall just came out May 2025 for it to correctly issue said signal.
July 17th on highway going near highway speed of 65-70mph in congested heavier traffic, person merging from on ramp caused abrupt slow to stop and rear ended a F250 truck causing MAJOR front end damage, couldn’t get front doors open, frame bent, vehicle totalled with $22k or more in damages. Seatbelt locked and air bags NEVER deployed. Ford dealership and insurance company very very suprised that given impact, speed, etc airbags never went off. Also emergency braking system did give collision detection warning and then seemed to entirely take over braking as I attempted to brake very hard nothing seemed to be happening for brakes. Seemed crash could have been entirely avoided. Vehicle totalled and gone to salvage yard. Thank goodness no injury very badly bruised
I was driving and felt a clunk in transmission and lost power and almost got rear ended. The wrench light came on so I pulled over and turned off the vehicle. I restarted and it ran fine but the transmission is dangerous, I don't want that to happen again. The transmission constantly hard shifts. This was at 2am in the morning when I was driving from FL to MD.
I took the car for a recall due OBD issues and reprogramming shortly after that 3 days after it was at redrock ford in Williston North Dakota is giving me Emergency brake malfunction in middle of driving car on cruise control this warning came on with a lightning symbol in red and circle around it disengaging cruise control on its own and also no showing speed cruise control is set for this is the 3rd time I take this car due to recalls they also just did seatbelt tensioners on front driver and passenger sides and is listed again for it and status on it is that no remedy is available due to parts not available I called the dealer after the OBD RECALL REPAIR and associate is stating I have to pay a diagnostic because is not related to EMERGENCY BRAKE ISSUES mentioned above I didn’t have this ebrake issue before u til oil took it to them now thanks to this I have a broken front right passenger wheel bearing most likely it engage ABS SYSTEMS AND MY WHEEL LOCKED WHILE DRIVING WITH MY Family and my kids now I have to buy a new driver side wheel bearing most likely have a mechanic installed also with a price of labor cost on top
The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle briefly hesitated and failed to properly shift into gear. The vehicle returned to normal functionality, but the failure became a regular occurrence. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the transmission. The contact was informed that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was 99,500.
I noticed that the car would make a clunking noise changing Drive to Reverse (vice versa) and had informed the dealership upon getting car checked up for cold start rattle issues that sounded like stemming from cam phaser. Dealer didn't comment on it. Over time, I felt it getting worse. Now at about 51,400 on my drive home on the freeway close to my exit, luckily, I felt the car vibrantly shaking (during drive and slow down). After exiting the freeway, I noticed car (and steering wheel) shaking vibrantly when going 25 mph and over. After taking it to a local mechanic, they found that the driveshaft was about to come off missing a part.
Was returning home from a drive on a freeway and noticed that car started shaking violently on right side rear of vehicle, like tires were loose, when I was close to the exit. Upon exiting freeway I noticed that vehicle at 20mph speeds+ (more noticeable at 25mph+) the car began shaking. Car shakes as well throughout braking. I took it to the tire shop to see if it was a tire issue or a balance issue, but the shop informed it wasn't a tire issue but possibly a CV related. Because I'm feeling the vibrations more from one side of vehicle, thinking it could be related to the toe link. Seeing car parked on driveway, it does seem to be leaning more to the right in the rear of the vehicle
Engine rattle during start up
Transmission 10R80 2017-2023 is prone to jerking, sudden power loss, complete failure, hard shifts and random downshifts. Ford knows that this issue exists but fails to issue a recall. The main issue is with the CDF drum. Ford came out with a new CDF Drum in 2023 to remedy the issue. But fails to cover any costs to fix it. To get to the CDF drum a complete transmission tear down is required. Ford is involved in multiple class action lawsuits and has even issued a TSB (22-2428) but again, fails to cover any costs.
The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that when the vehicle started, the driver's side front seat belt retractor fractured. The contact noticed an extremely loud pop and a burning odor. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or the dealer. In addition, the contact stated the vehicle was taken to the dealer in May 2025, prior to the failure; however, the contact was informed that parts were not available. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V099000 (Seat Belts); however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue and a case was filed. The failure mileage was 73,065. Parts distribution disconnect.
Transmissions CDF Drum is failing annd causing my transmission to go out of gear and slam into first and I just preformed “cam phaser” repairs exceeding $3400. A vehicle this new should not need these repairs. There’s 1000s of complaints online and it’s sick and twisted that Ford is not forced to recall these issues.
Expedition with 60k miles needing timing chain, cam phasers, 4 camshafts, valves and rockers. This has been a on going issue with 3.5 ecoboost engines. Ford needs a recall and reimbursement to owners for these costly repairs.
We purchased the 2019 Ford Expedition Limited from Interstate Ford in Miamisburg, OH, for $49,500 in 2023. The vehicle had roughly 47k miles on it at the time; it now has 69k. I started noticing that it was downshifting when I pulled out of my driveway and got about a block away from home shortly after our purchase. I reported this to the dealership several times, and they said they could not get it to replicate the problem. I explained that it was only happening when the engine was cold. Fast forward to June 2025, I was at the intersection one morning, and the vehicle would not move forward. Then it lurched forward suddenly, from that point, I started having more issues with 1st & 2nd gears. I took it to Germain Ford in Beavercreek, and they evaluated the issue and determined that I need a new transmission. This was submitted to Ford, and the replacement was approved, but it appears my extended warranty will have to cover the charges. I have noticed that several other people have reported the same issues with their 2019 models. Ford should cover this repair at no cost to us; that's just my opinion.
My transmission started losing power on acceleration, hard jerk/bang when shifting into gear, transmission slipping, loss of power between shifts
The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated while driving 40 MPH and depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle failed to respond as indented and started to decelerate unintendedly. The contact became aware of a rattling sound coming from underneath the vehicle. Several warning lights illuminated. The contact stated that the failure had occurred on several occasions. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for repair under a recall; however, the contact was provided the cost for a diagnostic test. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified on the failure, and informed the contact that the vehicle was included in Technical Service Bulletin: 22-2428 (Automatic Transmission - Harsh-Delayed Engagement). The approximate failure mileage was 50,000.
