NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2019 Ford Expedition. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
In April 2023 the transmission went out w head it replaced under the extended warranty , it continued with the same issues after the repair and one day on may 30, 2024it shut off and would t turn back on it gave the code” low transmission communication voltage” towed it to the dealership they told us it was a dead battery , replaced the battery the car still doing the same thing and now does not have any warranty due to mileage
The transmission has been repaired previously with the valve body replacement. It seems to be better but has hesitation or lag with upshifting still.
The transmission shifting is dangerous. It’s shifting hard, missing gears and when trying to accelerate the engine just rev’s and then slams into gear. It also skips. It’s not even safe to pull out into traffic. I have had it in at a Ford dealership 3 times and it has only gotten worse! I don’t know what else to do as the dealership acts like they have not seen this before and aren’t sure how to fix it.
The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that upon cold starts, there was a loud rattling sound coming from the engine compartment. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who diagnosed that the engine cam phasers had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The contact was informed that the vehicle was previously service under a Manufacturer Extended Warranty Coverage for the failure. The failure mileage was 77,000.
The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated while driving 55 MPH, the vehicle failed to accelerate and lost motive power. While driving uphill, the vehicle failed to accelerate. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed that the cam phaser and the differential pinion seal needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and opened. The contact was then referred to the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.
The car’s touchscreen and buttons on dash and steering wheel stop working sporadically. You can’t control the volume of the radio, hang up/answer calls, control the air conditioning, GPS is wrong on the map, etc. Sometimes the screen is completely blank and/or unresponsive. It is very dangerous as well when the back up sensors and camera don’t work.
In June of 2022 (50,284 miles) we were experiencing hard shifting and noises upon starting. We took it to our local dealership in Virginia who did an upgrade on the powertrain control module and told me what I was experiencing was normal for this transmission and not a concern. In December of 2022 (57,715 miles), my husband was driving our expedition when it suddenly downshifted, would not accelerate, and a warning popped up saying “drive mode unavailable”, in addition to a wrench and engine light displaying on the dashboard. We immediately had it towed to our local dealership where they diagnosed the problem as needing a MAP sensor replacement even though there was no codes showing. In March of 2023 (at 63,20 miles) while traveling with my 2 young children down the highway at 75 mph in a desolate area, my car made a noise, downshifted very hard, and lost ability to accelerate. The same warning popped up stating “drive mode unavailable”. I had to maneuver my vehicle to the shoulder in traffic traveling at a high rate of speed with my children in the car. I again had it towed to a ford dealership where they stated it was due to the previous dealership only replacing one MAP sensor so they replaced both. On October 28, 2023 (at approximately 72,000 miles) while traveling at 75 mph on a highway in a desolate area, my car again downshifted, lost the ability to accelerate, and had the same pop up stating “drive mode unavailable” with the same warning lights as the previous 2 times. I had to navigate across multiple lanes to the shoulder in low visibility pouring rain with vehicles driving at a high rate of speed. My car has been at a dealership for 2 weeks now and they have diagnosed the issue is my cam phasers and the repair is for them to be replaced. I opened a case with Ford customer experience who agreed to pay 40% of the cost. I have been put in dangerous situations due to Ford’s refusal to put out a recall when it is a known issue.
My 2019 Ford Expedition is experiencing engine shudder. This started about 3 weeks ago and is starting to happen more and more.
The transmission in my 2019 Ford Expedition is slipping and having drastic gear changes. Other people with the 10R80 transmission are having similar issues. This car is unsafe to drive.
I had a complete transmission replacement 3 weeks ago and as I was driving down a grade, the car started smoking. I immediately took it back to dealership that had just replaced the transmission. They stated that the new transmission was "factory overfilled" that caused the smoking. They called Ford and now I am on my 3rd transmission. It was covered under the warranty of the transmission I paid 3 weeks ago. This was very scary as we were traveling as a family when the car started smoking. Our car could have started on fire.
Transmission shifts really hard , will not go into gear, and downshifts unexpectedly. Dealership said if they cannot make it happen on test drive nothing they can do. Ongoing problem with thousands of vehicles. 10 speed Transmission is the problem.
The chrome interior trim on the center console (around the drink holder and shifter, as well as the smaller compartments) in the limited edition is defective and edges are lifting to the point that razor sharp edges are exposed and have cut open my hands, as well as the hands of my children. I asked them to replace it under my warranty and they declined. This part is defective and there are reports of others experiencing this online. The material used seems to be lifting and is not adhering properly. The part started lifting around 36,000 miles and continues to lift. The edge, again, is extremely sharp. WE have continually cut ourselves just reaching to grab a drink.
Our 2019 Ford Expedition MAX (75k miles), has a transmission that disengages while driving (wrench light on; powertrain system failure limp mode; incorrect 4th gear ratio error code). A mechanic diagnosed it as an inner sleeve of the C-D-F drum moving out of position needing a full rebuild or new transmission. The vehicle has lost total drive train power while driving in traffic at speed. Whenever there is a need for up shift or down shift, the vehicle will intermittently stutter, slip/grind gears, rev up, or lose power completely. This has put my family in danger on the road. The car is dangerous when attempting to pull onto roads with moving traffic. It is concerning that Ford has not issued a recall.
Hard shifting, getting stuck in high gears while stopped. Vehicle is only at 75,000 miles. Ford service says transmission needs to be replaced and it's extremely expensive.
The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that his wife was unable to unlatch the front driver’s side door. The contact called the local dealer and made them aware of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 32,077.
My 2019 Ford Expedition Max- Limited: Shifting was starting to get rough and car was jerking between gears. It was unsafe as it would not speed up in the highway and it would jerk all of a sudden. Transmission failed at 88K miles. I had to pay over 8K at the Ford Dealership to get a whole new transmission placed after various attempts to deal with issue failed. Ford Company could care less about their faulty transmissions. No warning lights ever came on other than the harsh shifting that suddenly started within a week's time.
The transmission randomly switches gears, both down and up. At times, the car will just downshift and appears to lose power. Especially when attempting to pass other vehicles. This can be a dangerous situation, and has been. It also has caused a near accident on a snow covered road by 'taking off' in a high gear which caused the card to slide into the oncoming lane twice. I have taken this car to the dealership service department 4 times, they say there are no codes or recalls and just reset the computer to have it relearn my driving habits.
Our 2019 Ford Expedition MAX (50k miles on it), has a transmission that disengages while driving. The vehicle has lost total drive train power while driving in traffic at speed. Whenever there is a need for up shift or down shift, the vehicle will intermittently stutter, slip gears, or lose power completely. This has put my family (pregnant wife and two children under 4) in extreme danger on the road. In one incident her only available course of action was to attempt to coast off the road while in the midst of moving traffic with speeds in excess of 50+ miles per hour around her. The car is dangerous, attempting to pull onto roads with moving traffic, is now extremely worrying. It is unconscionable that this vehicle issue has not resulted in a recall.
Both Rear shocks leaked oil at 37k causing vehicle to become very bouncy and unsafe to drive/control
The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated while driving approximately 30 MPH and depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle failed to accelerate as needed. The contact stated that it was as if the vehicle was stuck in second or third gear. The contact stated that when the transmission attempted to shift to the next gear, the engine revved loudly, and the vehicle jolted into gear. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that the failure was intermittent at first but had gradually become constant. The contact had taken the vehicle to a local dealer where it was diagnosed and determined that the transmission needed to be replaced. The contact stated that the dealer had rebuilt the transmission previously. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 83,000.
The rear-view camera does not work 80+% of the time. It usually fails to connect at all and I do not have visibility or access to the rearview camera when backing up (in reverse). This has been ongoing for well over a year now and has been progressively getting worse. Before it would just happen once every 20-30 times or so but now it happens every day I use the vehicle about 80-90% of the time. This has resulted in at least 3 narrow-miss accidents so far as I can't see what directly behind me. On more limited occasions, if the rear camera does show up and connect, it will display the rear image upside down, sometimes it will freeze on the screen and won't go away even when not engaged in Reverse thus not allowing access to the screen. It continues to happen every day I use the car and most days the rear camera will not ever connect.
"SHIFT SYSTEM FAULT" warning comes on dash with a wrench code. This is on my 2019 Ford Expedition Max, with 77000 miles on it. This warning comes when vehicle has been driven and since put in park, then put back into gear. If vehicle is shut off and turned back on code has cleared. Recently also got a "powertrain malfunction" code where then a driver mode became unavailable.
The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that an abnormal rattling sound was coming from the engine. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the contact was informed that the cam phasers where defective and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 58,000.
The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that upon purchase of the vehicle, the rear driver’s side strut was replaced. Recently, the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for a routine maintenance check; while being inspected, the contact was informed that the passenger’s side rear and driver’s side front struts had been saturated with oil. The passenger’s side front strut had also started to leak but was not saturated in oil. The dealer was notified of the failure. The manufacturer was also notified of the failure and the contact was provided a case number. The contact was then referred to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 25,870.
Vehicle has harsh shifting mainly gear 3-5 almost like being brake checked. The vehicle revs to 4000 rpm and won’t accelerate then slaws into gear causing the car to lurch forward and illuminate wrench symbol. Latest issue is car accelerates on it’s on and almost drove it on a drainage ditch pulling in my driveway.
It's not just the f150 with transmission issues. My 2019 expedition has had the same transmission issues since I bought it with 48000 miles. Most of the hard downshifts happen at highway speeds, but also occur at other times. I've taken it in at least 6 times for this issue with no remedy before the transmission failed at 102000 miles. That cost me $7100 to repair the transmission and $1000 in rental car costs. I have 113000 miles now and the same issues are occurring.
The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that when the vehicle was started, he heard an abnormal rattling sound. The contact called the dealer and was informed that the abnormal sound was due to failed cam phaser sensors. The vehicle was taken to another dealer where it was diagnosed with failed cam phaser sensors. The contact was informed that the cam phaser sensors needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the check engine and the low oil pressure warning lights illuminated. Additionally, the oil gauge was in the red. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed with a failed oil pump and oil pan. The contact was informed that the oil pump and oil pan needed to be replaced. The vehicle was currently being repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 84,000.
Momentary Neutral-Out Condition In Drive The vehicle has exhibited issues that correspond to other Ford vehicles that share the 10-speed transmission. This includes slipping, jerking, and loss of power to put it simply. A main issue that I wanted to point out is that it has a Momentary Neutral-Out Condition In Drive which means that the vehicle shifts into neutral when driving, thus resulting in a loss of power, suddenly. Consequently, this posses a major safety risk in all roads. There has been no accident that resulted from this. However, this requires a replacement of transmission which is a recall for the F150 but not the Expedition despite it having the same transmission and issues. This issue began around Christmas of 2022.
The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while her husband was driving approximately 40 -45 mph, he collided with a Volkswagen Jetta that cut him off. All the airbags in the vehicle deployed. The contact son was occupying the front passenger seat but the seat belt failed to retract. There were no warning lights illuminated. The steering wheel air bag struck the driver in the mouth. The passenger had scratches, but medical attention was not provided. A police report was filed. There was no reported fire. The vehicle was towed to an independent lot. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified about the failure but provided no additional assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 89,000.
The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, there was a vibration in the front differential. The contact stated that the vehicle felt like it was being driven in 4-WD however, the vehicle was in 2-WD. There were no warning lights illuminated. On another occasion, while driving approximately 30-35 MPH, there was a vibration and shimmy in the steering wheel. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer in July 2021 where it was diagnosed and determined that the failure was due to the front differential. The vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. The manufacturer was contacted, and the contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was approximately 47,000.
The Ford series of Trucks/SUVs from 2018-2022 are equipped with an Automatic Start/Stop feature which turns off the engine when the brake is depressed, and the engine is idling. On 4 occasions in the last month, when releasing the brake to start accelerating from a stop, the vehicle's engine has completely stalled/turned off disabling the vehicle and requiring the vehicle to be shifted in to park, restarted, and then attempted to drive. This causes an obvious safety risk if turning in front of traffic, vehicles behind you moving, etc.. When researching this online there are multiple complaints on this issue, specifically for the F-150 which uses the same components. Ford will not admit there is an issue and refuses to respond to owner complaints on this obvious safety risk. I would ask that the NHTSA looks further into this issue and the risk to consumers.
The vehicle has problem when shifting gears, and complete loss of power occurs. When trying to enter a road or cross a street, the vehicle can start to move then lose power in the middle of an intersection or lane. A loud clicking can also be heard after power is lost.
The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated upon starting the vehicle, he heard an abnormal sound coming from the engine on several occasions. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who informed the contact that the VIN was not included in Customer Satisfaction Program Number: 21N03 (Cam Phaser Replacement). The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 61,900.
FYI re: Request #[XXX] Let me know if you have any info I sent this letter on November 20, 2022 and as of January 10, 2023 I have had no response from Ford Motors: [XXX] Office of the CEO Ford Motor Company 1 American Road Dearborn, Michigan 48126 Re: 2019 Ford Expedition ACC-Cruise Control Potential Safety Problem Mr. [XXX], I wanted to let you know of a bizarre recent ACC cruise control issue with my 2019 Expedition. It has ~30,000 miles on it and has performed very well without problem before and after this incident. Several weeks ago I was driving on an interstate highway in a construction zone with stop and go traffic, and had the ACC on. I slowed down behind a dull colored black Chevrolet pickup that had dark lens covers over the tail lights and a dark cover over the license plate to about 5 MPH. Suddenly the ACC had full acceleration then the auto safety braking slowed me abruptly, then the ACC hit full acceleration again and the auto brake engaged. I turned the ACC off, and then back on, and it did the exact acceleration and safety braking so I turned the ACC off. There was no accident or problem other than this acceleration/braking sequence. When I no longer was behind the pickup I tried and ACC and it has worked perfectly since then, as it had prior to this bizarre issue The ACC seemed to not see this pickup truck but the auto safety braking system did. The pickup was an unusual non factory appearing paint job, dark gray or black not just a primer, and the tail lights and license plates also had some darkening coating. It seemed to be Stealth to the ACC, but not to the braking system. Maybe referred to the Engineering Section of the ACC group to see if they have heard of this before or have any idea what occurred to help prevent any risks involving the Ford ACC system. Again there was no accident or collision, only the sudden acceleration/braking. This only occurred one time on this 2019 Expedition and never on our other Ford products. While driving down the road, my vehicle suddenly drops from a higher gear down to 2nd. When this happens, the RPMs jump very high and the engine revs very high. While this is happening, I have no control and I can't use the gas pedal and am losing speed. The vehicle seems to be stalling. There are two messages that flash on the screen. "Shift system fault" and "see Manual". Neither are in the manual. I have taken it to Ford and after a day, they said nothing is wrong and collect almost $200. I took it in before my 75,000-mile transmission warranty was out. They said they have never heard of such a problem. I have now research it have found many people with the same on expeditionforum.com. It happens on a daily basis now and it's my only car and my learner car for my 15 year old. It WILL cause an accident. I did finally get it on videa and will make another attempt with FORD next week.
When the vehicle has the auto start-stop activated it will randomly kill the engine entirely when you go to drive forward from an auto start-stop stop. You then need to put the vehicle in park and restart the engine. I've taken this into the dealership twice now for this issue, as the first time they tried to fix it with a new battery, which did not fix the issue. It's currently at Ford Service being inspected again. This is unsafe as drivers behind you would be expecting you to move forward when traffic signals allow, and after they see your rear brake lights go off when you try to accelerate.
The vehicle started to rough shift. Then it started to not shift into gear, and the engine will rev as if in neutral instead of in gear. This has resulted in abrupt loss of power and the vehicle actually shutting down completely requiring restart. I called my Ford dealer (Columbia, TN) when it started shifting rough. They told me it was 2mos out for transmission issues. I called another Ford dealer in Franklin, TN whom also said months before they could see it. They referred me to a local transmission shop. That shop Coleman transmission, said these transmission in 2018&2019 are notorious for failing and were redesigned by 2020, that he had many just like mine awaiting rebuild. So I started researching, and I’m not alone, and many have had this exact same extremely dangerous situation of losing power, and car shutting down repeatedly.
The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated while his wife was starting the vehicle, she heard an abnormal sound coming from the vehicle. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact took the vehicle to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed with needing the Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) unit to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 52,000.
The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated while starting the vehicle, the vehicle made an abnormally loud rattling sound. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed with cam phaser failure. The contact was informed that all four cam phasers needed to be replaced; however, the vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, and a case was filed. The contact stated that the failure was like the Manufacturer Recall Campaign Number: 21N03 however, the vehicle was not included in the recall. The failure mileage was approximately 43,000.

The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the cam phaser adjuster needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was advised to call the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 103,000.
All four struts are leaking and causing erratic handling when rough roads are encountered. FORD has known of this problem for several years and refuses to replace after their base warranty, even though I have a full coverage extended warranty. If a consumer doesn't realize they have a defective suspension it could lead to their death. FORD has a service bulletin out on this problem. - strut, yes -yes -yes -yes -no, leakage of oil on garage floor
The main interface screen for GPS, Radio, Bluetooth (hands free phone operation), backup camera, and other vehicle settings, is malfunctioning and frequently non-responsive. This is tied to a faulty ACCESSORY PROTOCOL INTERFACE MODULE (APIM), also known as the SYNC 3 Module. Research on the issue shows this is a common issue with Ford Vehicles. The fixes reported in TSB 20-2255 05 August 2020 have been completed, the issues are persisting. The failure of this item creates safety issues with operating the vehicle. Similar issues have been reported in 11321932, 11300724, 11052887.
Rear struts failed at approximately 36, 000 miles - the vehicle was unsafe driving down the interstate at speed due to the bouncing. Independent mechanic confirmed rear strut failure on driver and passenger side. Additionally, front driver side strut failed. In addition to bouncing, this made rear brakes wear out unusually quick. Steering became light due to the front strut. There was no warning lights to indicate an issue. Took to independent mechanic due to unavailability of maintenance appointments at Ford.
The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the transmission malfunctioned, and the vehicle hesitated while accelerating and changing gear. The vehicle was taken to the local mechanic who diagnosed the vehicle and determined that the transmission had overheated. The contact was made aware of an unstated TSB for the failure. The vehicle was later taken to the local dealer who determined that the transmission was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 60,000.
In April 2021 while driving, the car abruptly when into low power mode. I drove it straight to ford. They pulled the codes and said there was nothing wrong. Ever since then, the car will randomly make a grinding sound, lose power, a wrench flashes and then it goes back to normal. It has done with several times on the freeway upon acceleration. The dealerships cannot replicate.
The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that he had noticed oil leaks on his garage floor. The contact took the vehicle to a dealer where he was informed that all four of the struts on the vehicle had leaked oil and needed to be replaced. The service advisor also informed him that the warranty provider was contacted and informed the dealer that the cost of the repair would not be covered. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but was not offered any assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 59,584.
a message on the instrument panel, and a red braking warning light the breaking start to get havey risking car crashing. Similer to issue NHTSA campaign number: 22V150000.
Our SUV has had problems in trying pick up speed. It started a few years back when I was taking a right turn and as I pushed on the gas pedal the SUV would not take off. We took it into the dealership but they could not recreate this problem. Yet, the problem persisted for us so we took it again to a different dealership and again they could not recreate the problem. Now our check engine light is on and the problem is getting worse. I called the dealership last week to bring it in and they could not get me in until mid-Septmember. One major incident occured when we were merging on the highway with lots of traffic and the SUV would not pick up speed. Some warning lights came on our dashboard and we had to immediately pull over to the side because the SUV would not pick up speed and it starting puttering. We were almost hit from behind by another vehicle due to the SUV not picking up speed. This problem has progressively been getting worse and I am afraid to drive the vehicle anywhere. I could be driving as slow as 30mph and trying to speed up causes the SUV to shake and putter. Now, when this happens the A/C does not cool. It feels like the SUV will shut off while I am driving. Plus, now the Engine Start/Stop feature no longer works. We have 4 kids and I am scared to drive this SUV as I feel this may cause us to be in a car accident. This is a major safety issue that needs to be addressed.
On multiple occasions while driving at freeway speeds, there have been sudden episodes of power loss and rapid loss of speed associated with harsh transmission downshifts. These events sometimes occurred on slight uphill grades and also on flat highway. At other times, the transmission will fail to shift into higher gear and seem to slip, resulting in loss of speed. A warning indicator appeared on the last occasion (8/27/22) with a wrench icon, and the FordPass app told me to have vehicle serviced. Vehicle is at dealer now.
Driving 70 miles per hour part of the roof rack blew off the vehicle; the molding and front cap on the driver side of the vehicle. The roof rack had never been used. A Ford dealer inspected the area where the parts were and could not determine what caused the failure.
