VEHICLE STALLED WHILE IN MOTION. *AK
PE00-020; CONSUMER WAS TRAVELING ABOUT 65MPH ON THE FREEWAY AND SHE HEARD A NOISE AND FELT VIBRATION . SHE WAS LOSING CONTROL, BUT STEERED VEHICLE TO THE SHOULDERS OF THE HIGHWAY. FIRSTONE WILDERNESS TIRES AT #P23575R15/105S #DOT VDHLAPY029 . TIRE ON THE RIGHT REAR PASSENGER'S SIDE HAD SEPARATED FROM THE RIM AND TIRE EXPLODED. ON THE OTHER THREE TIRES THERE WAS A LINE AROUND THE DIAMETER OF EACH TIRE OF THE BONDING OF THE TIRE TREAD. *AK *SLC
AFTER USING WINDOW WASHER, WIPERS COME ON WHEN USING SIGNALS. HAPPENS ALL THE TIME. *AK
NOTICED CRACKS ALONG RIM OF TIRE WHERE TREAD APPEARS TO BE BEGINNING TO COME APPART. HAVE SHOWN TIRE TO A FIRESTONE STORE AND FORD DEALER AND BOTH AGREE THAT IT DOESN'T LOOK RIGHT. HAD DEALER PUT ON SPARE TIRE. WE NOTICED THIS AFTER HEARING ABOUT PROBLEMS WITH THESE TIRES ON THE NEWS. I BELIEVE WE NOTICED THIS EARLIER BUT DIDN'T REALIZE IT COULD BE A SERIOUS PROBLEM. THE NEAREST FIRESTONE COMPANY STORE IS OVER 60 MILES AWAY. SURE DON'T FEEL COMFORTABLE DRIVING THAT FAR TO GET THEM REPLACED. ALSO, THE DEALER TOLD US IT WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE MANUFACTURER AND GAVE US AN 800 NUMBER TO CALL FIRESTONE (WHERE YOU GOT A RECORDED MESSAGE) AND EVEN THOUGH THE DEALER NEW THERE WAS A SAFETY ISSUE WITH THIS TIRE, THEY CHARGED US $15 TO PUT THE SPARE ON. WILDERNESS AT'S CRACKING - I LIVE IN IN MICHIGAN!! : HI, I'M TRYING TO GET REPLACEMENT TIRES, MINE ARE CRACKING. ON 8-19 I WENT TO TOMMY'S FIRESTONE IN NOVI, MI PER THE FIRESTONE 800 NUMBER. THEY HAD TIRES, BUT WOULD NOT REPLACE, SAID I WOULD HAVE TO PAY $500-$600. MANAGER "TOM" SHOWED ME HOW 2 ON MY TIRES ARE CRACKING ALL THE WAY AROUND. 8-20 I WENT TO CM SUPER TIRE (FIRESTONE) IN LIVONIA, MI AND WAS TOLD "WE DON'T DO RECALLS ON SUNDAYS" AND THEY DIDN'T HAVE TIRES FOR FREE, I WOULD HAVE TO PAY. WHILE TRAVELING DOWNHILL WITH NO ACCELERATION, ALLOWING THE ENGINE TO PROVIDE SOME BRAKING, THE CONSUMER NOTICED THERE WAS NO BRAKING FROM THE ENGINE AND THE TRANSMISSION WAS REPLACED, THE CONSUMER WAS NOT SATISFIED WITH THE REPAIR BECAUSE THE TRANSMISSION WAS REPLACED WITH A REBUILT ONE. NLM
MONDAY, JULY 31, 2000, I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM THE GROCERY STORE AND MY DRIVER SIDE REAR TIRE BLEW OUT, THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE TIRE I WAS HAVING AIR CAPACITY PROBLEMS WITH FOR 2 WEEKS. FORD ROAD SIDE ASSISTANCE CAME AND CHANGED MY TIRE AND PUT MY ORIGINAL SPARE ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE. I WENT TO FIRESTONE AND THEY REPLACED THE TIRE WITH A NEW FIRESTONE WILDERNESS AT ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE REAR AND PATCHED THE FRONT PASSENGER TIRE. WITH THE PENDING FIRESTONE WILDERNESS AT TIRE RECALL ON FORD EXPLORERS, I FEEL FORTUNATE THAT I WAS NOT TRAVELLING AT AN EXCESSIVE SPEED ON CENTRAL EXPRESSWAY. I WOULD LIKE THE POTENTIAL DANGER NOTED, I HAD CALLED MY CAR DEALERSHIP WESTWAY FORD AND THEY HAD DIRECTED ME TO FIRESTONE WHO CARRIES THE WARRANTY ON THE TIRES. TIRE CAME APART WHEN SUV WENT ON TO BLACK TOP IN 105DEG. TEMPS. FROM A GRAVEL ROAD. NO SIGN OF PROBLEM ON TIRE UNTIL WE DROVE ONTO ASPHALT. AT THAT TIME WE CAME FROM A FULL STOP AND BY THE TIME WE ACCELERATED TO 30MPG THE TIRE HAD FAILED AND THE TREAD SEPARATED FROM THE CORE. *AK( DOT NUMBER: TIRE SIZE: 255/70R16 )
FIRESTONE WILDERNESS AT TIRE EXPERIENCED TREAD SEPARATION, CONSUMER WANTS REIMBURSEMENT. *SLC
WE HAD COME TO A COMPLETE STOP IN TRAFFIC WHEN WE HEARD WHAT SOUNDED LIKE A "GUNSHOT". THE RIGHT REAR TIRE QUICKLY WENT FLAT AND I ASSUMED FROM THE SOUND THAT WE HAD EXPERIENCED A "BLOWOUT". THE TIRE WAS ABLE TO BE REPAIRED (PATCHED). I REALIZE THAT THE RECENTLY ANNOUNCED RECALL OF FIRESTONE TIRES IS CURRENTLY LIMITED TO 15" TIRES, HOWEVER, THIS IS THE 3RD FLAT TIRE WE HAVE HAD IN LESS THAN A YEAR (2 WERE PUNCTURES WHICH I REALIZE DOESN'T ENTER IN TO THE PROBLEM). I WILL NEVER FEEL COMFORTABLE WITH THESE TIRES OR SAFE. WE WERE JUST LUCKY THAT WE WEREN'T TRAVELING AT A HIGH SPEED WHEN THIS TIRE "BLEW". WE HAVE A SMALL SON AND THIS VEHICLE IS OUR PRIMARY TRANSPORTATION. THE TIRES HAVE MULTIPLE STRESS CRACKS AROUND THE TREAD AREA ON ALL FOUR TIRES. I HAVE BEEN TO 2 FIRESTONE DEALERS AS WELL AS THE CAR DEALER AND THEY WOULD NOT EVEN CHECK THEM. I WAS TOLD THEY WERE NOT INVOLVED IN THE RECALL. I UNDERSTAND THAT THIS IS THE WRONG TIRE NUMBER, BUT MY TIRES LOOK UNSAFE. THIS TIRE HAS BEEN RECALLED IN OTHER COUNTRIES AND OTHER COMPLAINTS HAVE BEEN FILED REGARDING THIS TIRE. I HAVE CONTACTED MANY SOURCES AND WAS TOLD NOT TO DRIVE AT HIGH SPEEDS OR WHEN THE WEATHER IS HOT. THAT IS NOT A SOLUTION. PE00020, TIRE TREAD SEPARATION: WHILE DRIVING ABOUT 65 -70 MPH ALL OF SUDDEN EXPLORER STARTED SWAYING FROM SIDE TO SIDE. AFTER HEARING A LOUD BANK, DRIVER LOST COMPLETE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. AFTER GAINING CONTROL, DRIVER PULLED TO VEHICLE TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, AND SAW LEFT REAR TIRE ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE COMPLETELY DESTROYED. TWO PEOPLE WERE IN THE VEHICLE. NO ONE WAS HURT. PE02000; TIRE TREAD SEPARATION: WHILE DRIVING AT 45 MPH ON WET PAVEMENT, EXPLORER SKIDDED ON THE ROAD AND FLIPPED OVER THREE TIMES. THERE WERE NO OTHER PASSENGER'S IN THE EXPLORER. DRIVER REMAINED IN THE HOSPITAL FOR 3 1/2 DAYS. THREE OF THE TIRES CAME OFF THE RIMS AND WERE COMPLETELY DESTROYED. THE TIRE WERE FIRESTONE, WILDERNESS, ORGINAL EQUIPMENT. THEY REPLACED TIRE FOR MINIMAL CHARGE BY NOW WE'RE VERY CONCERNED AND WOULD LIKE OUR TIRES REPLACED WITH DIFFERENT BRAND. NOT GETTING MUCH HELP AT THIS END. WE WERE TRAVELING NORTH ON 75 IN RICHARDSON, TX WHEN THE TIRE CAME APART. THE WHEEL IS ALL BANGED UP. WE'RE LUCKY THAT WE DIDN'T GET KILLED OR KILL ANYBODY WHILE TRYING TO EXIT THE FREEWAY. WE CURRENTLY RESIDE IN PUERTO RICO. IN THE SUMMER OF 2000, WE HEARD NEWS REPORTS OF TREAD SEPARATION PROBLEMS POTENTIALLY RELATED TO A MANUFACTURER'S DEFECT AND WARM CLIMATE. WE DETERMINED THAT ALL OF OUR TIRES ON OUR 99 EXPLORER WERE WILDERNESS TIRES. ONLY 1 WAS BEING RECALLED BECAUSE OF THE PLACE OF MFG. WE WERE PUTTING OFF REPLACING THE TIRE UNTIL THE MATTER WAS INVESTIGATED FURTHER. ON JULY 10, 2000 WHILE DRIVING WITH MY SON TO A FOOTBALL GAME WE STOPPED FOR A SODA AND DISCOVERED ONE TIRE SEPARATING. BECAUSE WE ALREADY HAD 36,000 MI. ON THE CAR AND BECAUSE OF ADDITIONAL SAFETY CONCERNS, WE IMMEDIATELY REPLACED ALL FOUR TIRES AT THE PLACE FORD RECOMMENDED. THEY REIMBURSED US FOR THE 1 TIRE RECALLED. NOW THE OTHER THREE HAVE BEEN RECALLED BUT THEY REFUSE TO REIMBURSE US (EVEN THOUGH WE HAVE THE ORIGINAL RECEIPT) BECAUSE IT WAS PRIOR TO AUG. 1, 2000. *AK( DOT NUMBER: )
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 FORD EXPLORER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO SMOKE WHEN THE TURN SIGNALS WERE UTILIZED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER AND THE MULTI-FUNCTION SWITCH WAS REPLACED; HOWEVER, THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE CONTACT RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE FOR NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 00V072000 AND WAS ABLE TO HAVE THE MULTI-FUNCTION SWITCH REPLACED AGAIN AT THE MANUFACTURER'S EXPENSE. THE FAILURE RECURRED A THIRD TIME, BUT THE MANUFACTURER REFUSED TO ASSUME LIABILITY SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS PREVIOUSLY REPAIRED. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE LESS THAN 93,113.
TIRE CENTER SAID COULD NOT FIX AS THEY SAID THE TIRE DID NOT HAVE A HOLE BUT WENT "BAD". TIRE LOOKED NORMAL ON OUTSIDE SO I ORIGINALLY THOUGH I HAD A FLAT. HAD TIRE REPLACED WITH SAME BRAND, SIZE, AND MODEL. ABOUT SAME TIME TOWED A SMALL JET SKI TRAILER AROUND TOWN FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS. FIRST TIME THE TRUCK TOWED ANYTHING. TOOK TIRE TO DEALER FIRST BUT DEALER SAID THEY DON'T FIX FLATS AND DID NOT LOOK AT THE TIRE. DID NOT LOSE CONTROL OF TRUCK WHEN TIRE WENT FLAT. THANKS.( DOT NUMBER: TIRE SIZE: P235-75R15 )
ON JULY 7, 2000, WHILE TRAVELING ON IH-10 FROM SAN ANTONIO, TX TO MY HOME IN KERRVILLE, AT APPROXIMATELY 70 MPH, MY EXPLORER DEVELOPED AN UNCONTROLLABLE WOBBLE, BEST DESCRIBED AS A TIRE LOSING AIR PRESSURE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO KEN STOEPEL FORD INC WHERE SEVERAL TESTS WERE PERFORMED, THE SHORT RACK (PART OF THE POWER STEERING) WAS REPLACED AND THEN THE FIRESTONE TIRES WERE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE CONTINUES TO HAVE A WOBBLE/WANDER PROBLEM AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS AND IT CONSTANTLY PULLS/DRIFTS TO THE LEFT. KEN STOEPEL FORD INC'S RATIONALE FOR FIRST REPLACING THE SHORT RACK WAS THAT THEY THOUGHT THE WOBBLE WAS CAUSED BY AN OVERLY SENSITIVE POWER STEERING PROBLEM. SINCE JULY 7 THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP FIVE (5) TIMES FOR THE SAME PROBLEM,AND EACH TIME, ALL THEY HAVE CHECKED IS THE FRONT END ALIGNMENT. IF ANYTHING, THE PROBLEM IS JUST AS BAD AND MORE CONSTANT THAN THE JULY 7 INCIDENT. A FORD FIELD SERVICE ENGINEER WAS DISPATCHED TO KERRVILLE ON MAY 30, 2001 AND ALL HE CHECKED WAS THE ALIGNMENT AND DID NOT WISH TO CONSULT WITH ME REFERENCE THE STEERING PROBLEM. KEN STOEPEL FORD INC NOW REFUSES TO PERFORM ANY ADDITIONAL WORK ON THE STEERING PROBLEM EVEN THOUGH THE PROBLEM SURFACED WITHIN THE FIRST YEAR OF OWNERSHIP AND THE VEHICLE HAS MORE THAN FIFTEEN (15) MONTHS OF WARRANTY REMAINING. THEY MAINTAIN THE PROBLEM NOW RESTS BETWEEN FORD MOTOR COMPANY AND ME. TO THIS DATE, FORD MOTOR COMPANY IS UNRESPONSIVE TO THIS STEERING PROBLEM WHICH I VIEW AS A SERIOUS SAFETY DEFECT.
DRIVING AT NIGHT. SLOWED DOWN TO EXIT INTERSTATE, APPROX. 55 MPH, WHEN RIGHT REAR TIRE BLEW OUT. WAS ABLE TO GET CONTROL OF VEHICLE TO PREVENT ACCIDENT. SINCE NEWS OF PROBLEMS WITH TIRES BECAME PUBLIC, WE HAVE REPLACED ALL THE TIRES ON THE VEHICLE WITH A DIFFERENT BRAND OF TIRE.L( DOT NUMBER: TIRE SIZE: P235/75R15 )
WHILE DRIVING 35-40 MPH HAD A DIRECT FRONTAL IMPACT WITH A POLE, AND DRIVER'S/ PASSENGER AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY, WHICH DID NOT PROTECT THE OCCUPANTS IN THIS CRASH. IN THE 19 MONTHS THAT I HAVE HAD MY FORD EXPLORE, IT HAS HAD 3 RECALLS. ABOUT 4 MOS AGO I NOTICED A LOUD NOISE THAT SEEM TO BE COMING FROM UP UNDERNEAT THE CAR. YOU COULD HEAR IT WHEN AT A STOPPED POSITION BUT STILL IN DRIVE. I HAD THE DEALERSHIP CHECK FOR IT TWICE AND THEY SAID THEY COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING. ABOUT 6 WEEKS AGO I NOTICED A SLIGHT HESTITATION WHEN ON THE HIGHWAY WHEN ACCELERATING AND IT SEEMED TO DO IT MORE OVER THE LAST 2 WEEKS. JULY 2ND, MY FAMILY WAS TRAVELING HOME FROM NEW YORK AND A NOISE BEGAN THAT COULD HAVE BEEN MISTAKEN FOR SOMETHING DRAGGING UNDERNEATH THE CAR. WE LOST ALL ACCELERATION, COASTED OFF AN EXIT, AND THE GEARS WERE USELESS AND GRINDED WHEN WE TRIED TO SHIFT TO PARK. THE EMERGENCY BRAKE WAS THE ONLY THING HOLDING US THERE. I AM STILL WAITING FOR RESULTS FROM THE DEALERSHIP ON THE PROBLEM, BUT ITS DEFINETELY TRANSMISSION RELATED. I NOW FEAR FOR THE SAFETY OF ME AND MY 2 CHILDREN IN THAT VEHICLE.
