WHEN PARKED OR DRIVING AT AN SPEED VEHICLE WILL SHUT DOWN, AND LOSE ALL POWER WITHOUT WARNING. THE DEALER HAS BEEN CONTACTED. *AK
WHILE DEPRESSING THE BRAKES IN A SUDDEN STOP. PEDAL WOULD GO TO THE FLOORBOARD, CAUSING THE CONSUMER TO DEPRESS THE GASS AND BRAKE PEDALS AT SAME TIME. DEALER HAS BEEN NOTIFIED. PLEASE PROVIDE FURTHER INFORMATION. *AK
THE UPPER HINGE ON THE REAR PASSENGER DOOR PRESENTS A DANGER TO A PERSON ENTERING THE FRONT DOOR. I WAS ASKED TO EXAMINE AN EXEMPLAR VEHICLE, ESPECIALLY THE REAR DOOR HINGES WHILE THE FRONT DOOR WAS OPEN. THIS IS IN RESPONSE TO A REPORTED INCIDENT IN LOUISIANA. A CHILD WAS INJURED BY THE UPPER HINGE OF THE REAR DOOR WHILE ENTERING THE DRIVER'S DOOR. THE CHILD'S MOTHER OPENED THE REAR DOOR AS THE CHILD CLIMED INTO THE VEHICLE. EVIDENTLY THE CHILD WAS USING THE EXPOSED REAR DOOR HINGE AS A GRIP. THE HINGE APPEARS TO BE THE SAME MODEL AS USED ON THE FORD RANGER PICKUP TRUCK. THE "STOP" WHICH LIMITS THE DOOR'S MOVEMENT IS A PIECE OF METAL THAT EXTENDS PAST THE PIN ON THE HINGE. THE "STOP" AND THE PORTION OF THE HINGE WHICH IS FASTENED TO THE FRAME HAVE THE SHAPE OF SCISSORS. THERE IS NO BODY PANEL TO LIMIT ACCESS TO THE REAR DOOR'S HINGE FROM THE OPENING TO THE FRONT OF THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT. THE HINGE IF USED ON THE FRONT DOORS OF A VEHICLE IS SAFE AND EFFECTIVE. MY NEW VEHICLE HAS THE FIRESTONE TIRES THAT HAVE CAUSED NUMEROUS DEATHS AND A MAGNITUDE OF ACCIDENTS. WITH SERIOUS INJURY. I CONTACTED MY LOCAL FORD DEALER THAT SOLD ME THE CAR AND THEY DIDN'T EVEN KNOW ABOUT THE PROBLEM. THE NEXT DAY THE DEALER CALLED ME AND SAID THAT THEY ARE GIVING OUT FIRESTONES PHONE NUMBER FOR INQUIRES. I NOW HAVE TWO NUMBERS FOR FIRESTONE TO WHICH BOTH REMAIN BUSY ALL THE TIME. SO I AM UNABLE TO CONTACT THEM. ON THE FRONT PAGE OF THE USA TODAY NEWSPAPER DATED 8/2/2000 IT REPORTS THAT 31 PEOPLE HAVE BEEN KILLED BY THESE TIRES BURSTING. IT REPORTS THAT IN 6 OTHER COUNTRIES FORD MOTOR CO RECALLED THE TIRES. I NEED ASSISTANCE IMEDIATELY AS I AM AFRAID TO USE MY VEHICLE. I CAN NOT TAKE THE CHANCE OF HAVING MY GRAD KIDS KILLED BY FAULTY TIRES. I AM ALSO IN THE PROCESS OF TAKING MY MOTHER EACH DAY FOR RADIATION 50 MILES AWAY. I NEED MY VEHICLE IMEDIATELY. I AMD CONCERENED ABOUT THE FIRESTONE WILDERNESS TIRES ON MY FORD EXPLORER. THERE WAS AN ARTICLE IN MY NEWSPAPER TODAY (8/4/00) ABOUT 21 DEATHS AND 193 CRASHES WITH THESE TIRES INVOLVED. I HAVE THES TIRES ON MY FORD EXPLORER AND I SURE DON'T WANT TO HAVE THESE TIRES FAIL. WHAT'S IT GOING TO TAKE AND HOW MANY MORE PEOPLE ARE GOING TO HAVE TO DIE BEFORE SOMETHING IS DONE? PE02000; TIRE TREAD SEPARATION: WHILE DRIVING ABOUT 30 MPH, TIRE ON PASSENGER'S FRONT SIDE WENT FLAT FOR NO REASON. TIRE WAS TAKEN TO BEREKLEY TIRE DEALERSHIP. THIS WAS A FIRESTONE, WILDERNESS TIRE, ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT. PLEASE LIST VIN #, TIRE SIZE/DOT # AND DATE OF INCIDENT. *AK
VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED WITH NO KNOWLEDGE OF THE TIRE RECALL AND FAILURES (FIRESTONE WILDERNESS AT), OWNER IS REQUESTING THAT THE TIRES BE REPLACED WITH OTHER MAKE TIRES AND IS NOT SATISFIED WITH THE RECALL PROCEDURE. *MJS
AS I HAVE A VEHICLE EQUIPPED WITH FIRESTONE WILDERNESS AT TIRES I AM CONCERNED THAT I MIGHT ENCOUNTER A PROBLEM INT HE FUTURE. I UNDERSTAND THAT FIRESTONE IS PLANNING ON ANNOUNCING A "LIMITED" RECALL TO OWNERS OF THE TIRES LOCATED IN SOUTHERN AREAS. MY PRESENT DRIVING HABITS ARE MAINLY TRAVELLING ON THE HIGHWAY AT SPEEDS BETWEEN 55 - 65 MPH FOR EXTENDED PERIODS OF TIME. THIS ALONG WITH WHAT I CONSIDER A LOWER TIRE PRESSURE STATED BY THE MANUFACTURER OF 26 LBS, I BELEIVE THIS CAN CAUSE THE TIRES TO HAVE MORE STRESS ON THE SIDEWALLS WHILE TRAVELLING AND WITH HIGHWAY SPEEDS COULD POSSIBLY CAUSE THE HEATING& BULDGING OF THE TIRES CAUSING MORE STRESS ON THE SIDEWALLS. I'VE NOT HAD A FAILURE BUT IT SEEMS THAT THE 16" TIRE HAS EXHIBITED THE SAME FAILURES AS THE RECALLED 15" TIRE AND FORD VOLUNTARILY REPLACED ALL SUCH TIRES IN TEH MIDDLE EAST. IT SEEMS IMPERATIVE THAT THE NHTSA REQUIRE A RECALL OF THE 16" FIRESTONE WILDERNESS TIRE AS WELL AS THE 15" TIRE. THIS VEHICLE WAS RENTED BY MY SON-IN-LAW FROM ENTERPRISE LEASING COMPANY IN ISSAQUAH, WASHINGTON. IT WAS USED TO CARRY MY 2 DAUGHTERS AND MY 2 GRANDCHILDREN. HE NOTICED THAT THE TAILGATE WOULD NOT LATCH SECURELY. FURTHER INVESTIGATION SHOWED THAT THE LEFT SIDE TAILGATE LATCH HAD NEVER BEEN INSTALLED AT THE FACTORY. THE ORIGINAL PAINT IS UNMARRED AND IS PRESENT IN THE BOLT HOLES AND THREADS. ONE CANNO HELP BUT WONDER HOW MANY OTHER VEHICLES LEFT THE FACTORY WITH THIS MAJOR SAFETY DEFECT. I TOOK PHOTOS OF THIS DEFECT AND HAVE THEM AVAILABLE FOR YOUR RECORDS, INFORMATION, AND INVESTIGATION. I WOULD APPRECIATE BEING CONTACTED AND KEPT UP TO DATE ON YOUR INVESTIGATION. THANKS.

DURING TIRE CHECK, DEALER DETECTED THAT WIRES WERE STARTING TO COME OUT OF THE SIDEWALL OF LF TIRE, FROM THE POINT WHERE THE TREAD MET UP WITH THE TIRE. THE VEHICLE ONLY HAS 6600 MILES ON IT. MY TIRES (DOT 8XHL) ARE NOT RECALLED BY FIRESTONE, BUT I FEEL THAT THIS IS IRRESPONSIBLE GIVEN THE NATURE OF THIS DEFECT. I HAVE CHANGED ALL OF MY TIRES TO A DIFFERENT BRAND AT MY OWN EXPENSE, BUT WOULD LIKE TO BE COMPENSATED FOR THE DEFECTIVE TIRES AND MY REPLACEMENT COST FOR THE NEW TIRES.( DOT NUMBER: 8XHL TIRE SIZE: P235/75R15 )

LIGHT TRUCKS CRASHING INTO CARS ACCOUNTS FOR THE MAJORITY OF FATALITIES IN VEHICLE-TO-VEHICLE COLLISIONS 2,000 PEOPLE WOULD STILL BE ALIVE IF THEIR VEHICLES HAD BEEN HIT BY A HEAVY CAR INSTEAD OF AN SUV 80 PERCENT OF CAR AND SUV OWNERS STRONGLY THAT AUTOMAKERS SHOULD MAKE SAFETY CHANGES TO SUVS THAT WOULD MAKE THE ROADS SAFER FOR CAR OCCUPANTS ARE SUV'S SAFE? OVERALL SAFETY ON AMERICA'S ROADS HAS INCREASED OVER THE LAST DECADE. HOWEVER, SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES (SUVS) THREATEN TO REVERSE THE TREND. THERE IS INCREASING EVIDENCE THAT SUVS ARE NOT AS SAFE AS THEY APPEAR. RECENT STUDIES SHOW THAT SUVS POSE A SIGNIFICANT THREAT TO DRIVERS AND PASSENGERS OF OTHER CARS ON THE ROAD. IN ADDITION, THERE ARE INDICATIONS THAT SAFETY PROBLEMS THREATEN PASSENGERS AND DRIVERS OF SUVS THEMSELVES. MOST DRIVERS WANT TO FEEL SAFE ON THE ROAD, BUT CHOOSING AN SUV FOR SAFETY MAY BE MAKING THE SITUATION WORSE. PARTLY, IT'S AN ISSUE OF ESCALATION. LIKE AN ARMS RACE, AS MORE DRIVERS CHOOSE HEAVIER CARS, THOSE WHO CHOOSE LIGHTER CARS ARE IN MORE DANGER. THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION, THE GOVERNMENT AGENCY STUDYING THE SAFETY OF SUVS, DESCRIBES TWO CHARACTERISTICS OF SUVS AND OTHER LIGHT TRUCKS THAT HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO INCREASE FATALITIES: ROLLOVER PROPENSITY AND CRASH COMPATIBILITY.(1) ROLLOVER AND UNSAFE FEATURES THE PROPENSITY OF SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES TO ROLL OVER IS MAJOR SAFETY CONCERN. SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES ARE MORE THAN THREE TIMES MORE LIKELY TO ROLL OVER IN CRASH THAN NORMAL PASSENGER CARS. THE HIGHER ROLL-OVER PROPENSITY MAY ALSO LEAD TO HIGHER FATALITIES. SUVS ARE HEAVIER AND RIDE HIGHER THAN REGULAR CARS. THE HIGH RIDE CONTRIBUTES TO A PROPENSITY OF SUVS TO ROLL OVER IN ACCIDENTS. ACCORDING TO NHTSA, SUVS ROLLOVER IN 37 PERCENT OF FATAL CRASHES, COMPARED TO A 15 PERCENT ROLLOVER RATE FOR PASSENGER CARS. ROLLOVER CRASHES ACCOUNTED FOR 53 PERCENT OF ALL SUV OCCUPANT DEATHS IN SINGLE VEHICLE CRASHES IN 1996.
YOU ARE GIVING THE PUBLIC A FALSE SENCE OF PROTECTION, THEY THINK AFTER THE TIRES ARE REPLACED ON THE FORD EXPLORES THEY WILL BE TOTAL SAFE. YOU SHOULD BE RELEASING INFORMATION ON FORD EXPLORERS THAT ROLLOVER WITHOUT THE TIRE FAILURE. YOU KNOW THAT DAM VEHICLE DID NOT MEET THE ROLLOVER TEST AND IT WILL CONTINUE KILLING PEOPLE, NOT ONLY PEOPLE DRIVING THE VEHICLE BUT PEOPLE LIKE ME THAT HAPPENS TO BE NEAR ONE WHEN IT ROLLOVER.
