NOISY DIFFERENTIAL. CONSTANT WHINING AROUND 50 MPH AND UP. RELUCTANT TO REPORT TO DEALER FOR INDICATIONS OF LACK OF RESPONSE CITED BY OTHER COMPLAINANTS. LIVING WITH PROBLEM UNTIL DIFF FAILS! *NM
2002 FORD EXPLORER XLT. WHEN HAVING BRAKES REPLACED MECHANIC INFORMED ME BOTH REAR SPRINGS WERE BROKEN. IN CHECKING WEB THIS APPEARS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM WITH VARIOUS FORD PRODUCTS. APPROX. MILEAGE 78,000. MECHANIC SAID THE SPRINGS CAN BREAK APART WHILE DRIVING, CAUSING A BLOWOUT. AGAIN, IF THIS IS A KNOWN, COMMON PROBLEM WITH FORDS, WHY HASN'T THERE BEEN ANY RECALL REGARDING THIS? LUCKILY NO ACCIDENT/INCIDENT BECAUSE THE PROBLEM WAS DISCOVERED PRIOR TO ONE OCCURRING. *TR
WE PURCHASED A USED 2002 EXPLORER LTD. IN JULY 2010. THE CAR HAD 62,500 MILES ON IT AND LOOKED TO BE IN GREAT SHAPE. THE PREVIOUS OWNER HAD ALL THE SERVICE PAPERS AND WE CHECKED CARFAX AND WE SAW NO REASON NOT TO PURCHASE THE CAR. WE SHOULD HAVE CHECKED CARCOMPLAINTS.COM THOUGH. AS I WRITE THIS, THE TRANSMISSION HAS FAILED. ACCORDING TO WHAT I READ ON THE INTERNET THIS IS A MAJOR PROBLEM FOR EARLY 2000'S FORD EXPLORERS. HOW CAN I SHELL OUT $2500 OR MORE FOR A NEW TRANSMISSION?? FORD SHOULD BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR PRODUCING THIS LEMON'THAT I HAVE ONLY OWNED 5 MONTHS. WHEN SHIFTING GEAR FROM "PARK" TO "DRIVE" THE COLUMN SHIFTER WAS NOTICABLY DIFFICULT TO MOVE. WITHOUT WARNING , THE COLUMN SHIFTER FELL OFF, RESULTING IN NOT HAVING A CAR TO DRIVE. I AM CURRENTLY TRYING TO HAVE THE PROBLEM FIXED. *JB
2002 FORD EXPLORER, THE BACK LIFT GATE / PANEL DIRECTLY UNDER THE GLASS, CRACKED FOR NO REASON. ONE DAY HEADING TO LUNCH I NOTICED THIS PIECE CRACKED. NOW, I HAVE BEEN NOTICING THIS ON OTHER FORD EXPLORERS AND EVEN FOUND A WEBSITE CONTAINING LOTS OF OTHER 2002 FORD EXPLORER OWNERS COMPLAINING ABOUT THE SAME ISSUE. CONTACTED FORD MOTOR COMPANY ON 12-21-09 AND NO RECALL HAS BEEN MADE ON THIS VEHICLE WITH THIS PROBLEM. CONSUMER STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AND WITHOUT WARNING THE VEHICLE WILL STICK IN PARK AND WILL NOT SHIFT GEARS CAUSING A DISTRACTION TO THE CONSUMER. DEALER NOTIFIED. TS
TIRE PRESSURE IN 2002 EXPLORER STILL SET TOO LOW. THE DOOR PANEL ON MY 2002 EXPLORER SAYS TO INFLATE FRONT TIRES TO 30 PSI, REAR 35 PSI. WHILE SPIN BALANCING I WAS ABLE TO WITNESS THE "CUPPING" OF THE TIRE WHILE IT WAS SPINNING ON THE MACHINE. THIS SHOWED UNEVEN WEAR. THIS WAS ONLY ON THE FRONT TIRES, WHICH, ACCORDING TO THE OWNERS MANUAL AND THE DOOR PANEL, NEEDED ONLY 30 PSI OF AIR. I CALLED THE MANUFACTURER (GOODYEAR) AND THEY SAID NEVER GO BELOW 35 PSI ON ALL FOUR TIRES. I HAVE 16 INCH AP TIRES. HOW FAR IS FORD WILLING TO GO? SMOOTHNESS OF RIDE OVER SAFETY OF OCCUPANTS?
I'VE OWNED THE VEHICLE FOR APPROX. 10 MONTHS. THE VEHICLE HASN'T STARTED 7 DIFFERENT TIMES. I'VE HAD MINOR HESITATIONS WHEN ACCELERATING FROM AN IDLE. THE VEHICLE HAS FELT LIKE IT WAS GOING TO STALL SEVERAL TIMES WHEN COMING TO A STOP OR ACCELERATING FROM A STOP. THE HORN, ON OCCASION, HAS NOT MADE THE PROPER SOUND. THE DOOR LOCKS DO NOT ALWAYS LOCK OR UNLOCK WITH THE REMOTE. I'VE HAD A BURNING SMELL EMINATING FROM VENTS WITH HEAT ON. I'VE BEEN TO THE DEALERSHIP, JIM KEIM FORD, 3+ TIMES, HAD A DIAGNOSTIC EXAM DONE, HAD THE FORD FLIGHT RECORDER INSTALLED TO ATTEMPT TO REGISTER PROBLEMS. NOTHING EVER FOUND. I'VE DOCUMENTED EVERYTHING FROM THE TIME OF THE INITIAL PROBLEM, JUST WENT THROUGH THE DISPUTE SETTLEMENT BOARD AND HAVE BEEN AWARDED A REFUND OF MONEY OR REPLACEMENT OF VEHICLE. CONSUMER NOTICED THAT THE SRS LIGHT APPEARED ON THE DASHBOARD AND REMAINED ON. VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION, AND MECHANIC DETERMINED THAT THE SRS SENSOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED, AND REPLACED IT FOUR TIMES. HOWEVER, THE PROBLEM RECURRED. *AK
2002 FORD EXPLORER GEAR SHIFT BROKE COMPLETELY OFF WHEN CAST ALUMINUM RING FAILED. I BELIEVE THIS IS A MANUFACTURING DEFECT THAT COULD CAUSE A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY ISSUE IF SOMEONE WERE TO SHIFT UP OR DOWN WHILE THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION. FORDS ESTIMATED COST TO REPAIR IS $2400.00. *TR
DANGEROUS CRACK OCCURRED IN 2002 FORD EXPLORER REAR LIFTGATE IN DEC. 2002, WAS REPAIRED. RECURRED IN SEP. 2005, AND FORD REFUSED TO REPAIR 2 WEEKS AFTER WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED, EVEN THOUGH PART WAS DEFECTIVE AND VEHICLE HAD ONLY 28,000 MILES. APPLIQUE MAY COME OFF, THREATENING STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY OF LIFTGATE AND GLASS. INTERNET SHOWS DOZENS OF CUSTOMERS HAD EXACTLY THE SAME PROBLEM. *JB

WHILE DRIVING APPROX. 40 MPH, VEHICLE SUDDENLY WENT INTO 4 WHEEL DRIVE LOW RANGE. OCCUPANT WAS WEARING SEAT BELT AND CAR CAME TO AN ABRUPT STOP. ACCIDENT WAS AVOIDED DUE TO LIGHT TRAFFIC THIS DAY. CAR IS @DEALER 4 REPAIR. DEALER CLAIMS COMPUTER THAT SENDS SIGNAL TO 4 WHEEL DRIVE TRANSFER CASE FAILED DUE TO COLD WEATHER AND SENT FAULTY SIGNAL TO ENGAGE 4 WHEEL DRIVE INTO LOW RANGE. TEMP WAS 40 DEG. THAT DAY. I AM CONCERNED ABOUT THE STRESS PUT ON ALL OF THE INTERNAL DRIVE COMPONENTS DUE TO THIS SUDDEN ENGAGEMENT. DEALER SAYS THEY CHECKED FOR OUTSIDE DAMAGE, BUT DAMAGE WILL MOST LIKELY BE INTERNAL I.E. TRANSMISSION, TRANSFER CASE, SHAFTS, ENGINE, DRIVE ASSEMBLYS. THE DAY B4 WE TRAVELED ON THE INTERSTATE AT SPEEDS BETWEEN 60-70 MPH. IF THIS HAD OCCURED AT THIS SPEED IT WOULD HAVE BEEN MUCH WORSE. WIFE WENT FORWARD DURING ENGAGEMENT AND STRAINED HER SHOULDER. SHE WAS WEARING HER SEAT BELT THOUGH. DT
2002 FORD EXPLORER 4.6 V8, APPROX. 78000 MILES. WHILE DRIVING MY SPARK PLUG (UNKNOWN NUMBER - SECOND IN ON DRIVERS SIDE), BLEW OUT. WAS ABLE TO REPLACE IT. NO MORE THEN 30 MINUTES OF DRIVING SAME PLUG WAS SPIT OUT AGAIN. THIS TIME UNABLE TO REPLACE IT. *TR

NAR 06/19/2003. *MR THERE IS A RECCURRING PROBLEM WITH THE BRAKES ON THE CONSUMERS 2002 FORD EXPLORER. THE SERIES OF INCIDENTS OCCURRED NOV 2, 2002, FEB, 2003, MAY 5, 2003, AND THE LAST TIME WAS MAY 17, 2003 TO DATE. IT IS EVIDENT TO THE CONSUMER THAT THERE IS AN CONSISTENT PROBLEM AND NEEDS TO BE FIXED. THE DEALERSHIP CAN'T SEEM TO FIND THE SOURCE OF THE PROBLEM. WHEN DRIVING MY 2002 EXPLORER, THE CABIN HAS A POUNDING SOUND WHEN DRIVING OVER ANY UNEVEN SURFACE, JUST LIKE A BOOMING STEREO. IT DOESN'T EVEVN HAVE TO BE A LARGE BUMP OR BUMPS. AFTER ABOUT 5 MINUTES OF THIS NOISE, I END UP GETTING A HEADACHE. THIS HAS NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE IN ANY OTHER VEHICLE. I CAN ATTACH A LETTER I SENT TO FORD WITH NO REPLY. *AK
TRANSMISSION SLIPS WHEN STOPPED AT A INTERSECTION OR STOPLIGHT. SOMETIMES THE VEHICLE WILL STALL. THE DEALER HAS STATED THEY COULD NOTREPRODUCE THE PROBLEM DURING AND AFTER THE WARRANTY PERIOD. I HAVE FILED SAFETY COMPLAINT WITH FORD MOTOR COMPANY CONSUMER RELATIONS AND THE DEALER HAS ATTEMPTED TO REPAIR WITHOUT SUCCESS. THE DELAY IN THE TRANSMISSION ENGAGING IS A SAFETY HAZARD SINCE THE DELAY IN PULLING OUT INTO TRAFFIC COULD RESULT IN A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. THE PROBLEM IS BECOMING MORE FREQUENT, ALMOST DAILY OCCURENCE.
CONSTANT TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS SINCE PURCHASE OF CAR FROM FORD DEALER W/29,000 MILES ON IT. ROBLEMS: TRANSMISSION SHUTTERING, BANGING IN GEAR, BANGING INTO REVERSE(ALWAYS) AND OVERDRIVE LIGHT BLINKS ON AND OFF SOMETIMES. SOMETIMES THE BANGING INTO GEAR FEELS LIKE SOMEONE HAS HIT YOU FROM BEHIND. CAR ALWAYS BANGS INTO REVERSE. SERVICE TO AUTOMATIC AS RECOMMENDED BY FORD MANUAL AND FORD DEALER: WE HAD THE TRANSMISSION FLUID CHANGED, WE HAD THE TRANS. COMPUTER RESET TWICE, AND WE HAD TO FIX THE 4-WHEEL DRIVE THAT BROKE AT ABOUT 40,000 MILES. SINCE NONE OF THESE SERVICES FIXED THE TRANSMISSION, THE FORD DEALER RECOMMENDED A NEW TRANSMISSION FOR ABOUT $3000. WHICH IS RIDICULOUS WHEN THE CAR IS SO NEW AND SO EXPENSIVE.*AK THE CARS TRANSMISSION HAS NEVER WORKED PROPERLY, AND HAS THE SAME PROBLEMS THE 2004 EXPLORER TRANSMISSION HAVE. THE INVESTIGATION IN THE EXPOLORER'S BAD TRANSMISSIONS GOES BACK BEYOND THE 2004 MODELS, BECAUSE OURS IS A 2002 AND HAS NEVER WORKED PROPERLY.
WHILE CLOSING THE REAR LIFT GATE, THE ENTIRE GLASS PORTION EXPLODED. THE CONSUMER DISCOVERED THAT THERE WAS A RECALL AND WAS NEVER NOTIFIED. (RECALL#04V442000) THE CONSUMER REQUESTED REIMBURSEMENT. SCC PE04045.PCO. *JB

VEHICLE BROUGHT TO DEALER AFTER CRAKING NOISES BEHIND DASH AND DRIVER PILLAR. FOUND 15 PLUS BOLTS LOOSE, HOSES INSTALLED INCORRECTLY, ALL PANELS/DOOR/GRILLS ASSEMBLY ON VEHICLE FRONT AND REAR ARE DROPPED OR RACKED OUT OF ALIGNMENT. DEALER UNABLE TO CONCLUDE WHY SO MANY DEFECTS EXIST. DT
I BOUGHT A 2002 EB EXPLORER IN JULY 2002 AND HAVE BEEN HAVING CHRONIC TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS SINCE OCT/NOV 2002. THE TRANSMISSION SHIFTS BETWEEN 2-3 AND 3-4 ARE ROUGH AND IT JERKS INTO GEAR. THE FIRST TIME INTO THE DEALER, THEY "VERIFIED" MY CONCERN AND DID ABOUT $1,000 IN REPAIRS. IT WAS OK FOR ABOUT 3 WEEKS AND STARTED AGAIN. IT HAS GRADUALLY GOTTEN WORSE, AND THE DEALER CLAIMS THEY CAN NOT FIND A PROBLEM. THEY HAVE UPDATED AND REPROGRAMMED THE SYSTEM MANY TIMES, AND NOTHING HELPS. I AM NOW ON MY THIRD TRIP TO THE DEALER FOR THIS. WITH ALL OF THE COMPLAINTS AND FORD'S SERVICE BULLETINS THAT LIST THE EXACT PROBLEMS I AM HAVING, I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY FORD IS NOT DOING SOMETHING ABOUT THIS!! *JB
WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE AT 15MPH THE SPARE TIRE CABLE SPLIT AND THE TIRE COLLAPSE, DEALER HAS BEEN NOTIFIED. NLM
THE TIRE BLEW OUT OF THE EXPLORER GOING 75 MPH ON A MAJOR ROUTE IN MASSACHUETTS. THERE WERE NO INJURIES, BUT I FEEL I SHOULD REPORT THIS DUE TO 6-MONTH OLD VEHICLE WITH LESS THAN 10,000 MILES. THE CONDITIONS THAT DAY WERE VERY HOT, IT WAS ABOUT 90 DEGREES WHEN THE TIRE BLEW OUT NEED TO REPORT. DT
DT: THE CALLER SAID VEHICLE HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE TRANSMISSION. IN SEPTEMBER 2002 AT 4775 MILES WHEN TRYING TO ACCELERATE THE VEHICLE MADE NOISE AND WOULD NOT ACCELERATE. IN NOVEMBER 2003 AT 34,114 MILES THE LIGHTS ON THE DASHBOARD CAME ON. SHE COULD SMELL SOMETHING. BOTH TIMES SHE WAS TOLD NOTHING COULD BE FOUND. CURRENTLY, ALL THE LIGHTS ON THE DASHBOARD CAME ON AGAIN. WHILE GETTING ON THE HIGHWAY THE VEHICLE LOST POWER AND WOULD ONLY GO 20 MPH. DEALER TOLD HER THE TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED, AND THE CALLER WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR IT. *AK
THE SEAT BELT ARRESTOR CHARGE INADVERTENTLY FIRED WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS BEING SHIFTED FROM PARK INTO REVERSE. THE FIRING OF THE CHARGE FILLED THE VEHICLE INTERIOR WITH SMOKE AND HAS RENDERED THE DRIVER'S SEAT BELT UNUSABLE UNTIL REPAIR CAN BE MADE.*AK
GLASS EXPLODED OUT OF THE BACK WINDOW, INJURING MY DAUGHTER. FORD STATES THAT THERE IS A CAMPAIGN, NOT A RECALL. SO I WASN'T NOTIFIED OF THE FAULTY PLUNGER MECHANISM. FORD REPLACED THE GLASS, BUT COULD NOT GUARANTEE ME THAT IT WOULD NOT HAPPEN AGAIN, SO I TURNED IN THE LEASE SINCE THE VEHICLE IS UNSAFE FOR MY FAMILY (4 KIDS). THEY ARE SUING ME BECAUSE I TURNED IN THE LEASE EARLY.*AK PE04045.PCO

SEPTEMBER 2002: FUEL INJECTOR FOR #3 CYLINDER FAILED, CAUSING GASOLINE TO BE SPRAYED OVER ENGINE. DISCOVERED IN DRIVEWAY DURING VEHICLE WARM-UP. NO INDICATION OF PROBLEM EXCEPT FOR SMELL. OCTOBER 2003: FUEL INJECTOR FOR #3 CYLINDER FAILED, CAUSING GASOLINE TO BE SPRAYED OVER ENGINE. FAILURE OCCURED AT SOME POINT DURING DRIVING. DISCOVERED ONLY DUE TO FUEL SMELL. NO OTHER INDICATION. DEALER FIXED BOTH TIMES. CONCERNED ABOUT OCCUPANT SAFETY -APPEARS AS THOUGH FIRE COULD EASILY IGNITE, AND LEAD TO SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. NO WARNING THAT SYSTEM HAS FAILED.
IN THE UNLIKELY EVENT THERE IS A PROBLEM THAT IS TOTALLY "UNFIXABLE" THEN FORD HAS SOLD ME A PRODUCT THAT IS FAULTY, AND THE PRODUCT SHOULD BE REPLACED. HOWEVER, I WOULD LIKE FOR THE CAR TO BE FIXED AND I AM WILLING TO LEAVE IT IN THE SHOP AS LONG AS IT TAKES TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM SO THAT THE CAR WILL BE SAFE TO DRIVE AGAIN. *LA

WATER ENTERING DIFFERENTIAL. COMPLETE DENIAL BY FORD MOTOR COMPANY SITUATION HAS POTENTIAL FOR INJURY. CAVALIER AND ARROGANT ATTITUDE OF FORD MOTOR COMPANY CUSTOMER SERVICE CENTER. ACTUALLY TOLD ME NOT TO WRITE THEM ANY MORE ABOUT THE PROBLEM. DEALER HAS DONE ALL IT CAN AND CONTINUES TO REPLACE PARTS. DEALER AGREES FORD HAS SOMETHING TO HIDE. DEALER CONFIRMS A VERY HIGH FAILURE RATE SPECIFIC TO WET CLIMATES AND THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST. THE ONLY GOOD NEWS DEALERS IN THE AREA STOCK LARGE QUANTITIES OF REPLACEMENT PARTS.

MY VEHICLE HAS CRACKING NOISES BEHIND DASH THAT UNCOVERED 15 PLUS BOLTS LOOSE, IN ADDITION THE DEALER NOTICED THE FRAME LOOKED RACKED. WHILE OPENING THE REAR TOP HATCHBACK, THE REAR WINDOW EXPLODED IN MY WIFE'S FACE WHILE MY 4 YEAR OLD SAT IN THE REAR SEAT. MY WIFE RECEIVED MINOR SCRATCHES FROM THE FLYING GLASS. MY SON WAS SHAKEN BUT NOT INJURED AS THE SHATTERED GLASS FLEW APPX 15 FEET OUTWARD AND TO THE LEFT AND RIGHT. SINCE THE BOTTOM PANEL OF THE TOP HALF OF THE REAR GATE IS ONLY ATTACHED TO THE CAR BY THE GLASS AND THE DEFOGGER CABLE, THIS FOUR FOOT BY SIX INCH METAL PANEL SLAMMED TO THE GROUND JUST MISSING MY WIFE'S LEGS. I WAS IN THE HOUSE AT THE TIME AND HEARD WHAT SOUNDED LIKE A SMALL EXPLOSION WHEN IT BURST. IT WAS TERRIBLY FRIGHTENING TO MY WIFE AND SON. I BROUGHT THE CAR TO THE DEALER WHO AT FIRST TOLD ME THAT IT WAS NOT A WARRANTY ISSUE AND I SHOULD GO TO A GLASS REPAIR SHOP. I REFUSED AND ASKED THEM TO FIX IT AND INPECT THE WORK. THEY TOLD ME THEY HAD "ONLY" THREE OR SO REPORTED INCIDENTS OF BREAKAGE IN PAST YEAR AND THAT THE PREVIOUS RECALL NOTICES I RECEIVED FOR THE REAR WINDOW HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH WHAT HAPPENED. THEY SAID MY CAR WAS FINE AFTER IT WAS CHECKED FOR THE RECALL NOTICE TWO PREVIUOS TIMES PRIOR TO THIS INCIDENT. I AM WAITING FOR THE CAR TO BE REPAIRED.*AK PE04045.PCO
NHSTA#01I010000 REF. 2002 FORD EXPLORER REAR WINDOW LIFT ARM TWISTING AND CAUSING THE REAR WINDOW TO BREAK. I HAVE OWNED THE CAR FOR 1.5 YEARS AND THE WINDOW HAS BROKEN TWICE AND THE ARM TWISTED A THIRD TIME. WHEN WE GOT THE VEHICLE BACK THE SCREWS WERE STRIPPED AND THE LIFTGATE WAS DAMAGED. MY DAUGHTER WAS STANDING BELOW THE WINDOW WHEN IT BROKEN AND GLASS FELL ALL OVER HER. LUCKILY NO GLASS GOT INTO HER EYES OR MOUTH BUT I BELIEVE THE REAR WINDOW BRACKET IS A SAFETY HAZARDS WHICH DEMANDS CORRECTING. I KNOW THAT FORD DID RE-ENGINEER THE REA WINDOW FRAME AND LIFT BRACKETS. BECAUSE THERE HAS NOT BEEN A FORMAL RECALL, I CAN NOT GET THE NEW REAR LIFT GATE BUT RATHER THAY KEEP REPLPACING THE BROKEN WINDOWS. MEANWHILE I KEEP PAYING FOR THE VEHICLE TO BE IN THEIR SHOP.
