MY 2002 FORD EXPLORER LXT, THE DOOR AJAR LIGHT STAYS ON AND THE DOME LIGHT WILL STAY ON. EVERY ONCE AND A WHILE THE ALARM WILL SOUND FOR NO REASON. THIS IS A SAFETY CONCERN CAUSE WHILE DRIVING AT NIGHT AND HAVING THE DOME LIGHT TURN ON HINDERS YOUR VISION AND COULD CAUSE A TRAFFIC CRASH. HAVING THE LIGHT STAY ON AFTER YOU GET OUT ALSO DRAINS THE BATTERY AND CAUSES PROBLEMS WHEN YOU GO TO START IT UP. *TR
WHILE APPROACHING AN INTERSECTION APPLIED BRAKES AND PEDAL WENT ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR. VEHICLE RAN ON A CURB AND HIT A FIRE HYDRANT. DEALERSHIP WAS AWARE OF PROBLEM.*AK
WHILE PARKED WITH REAR WINDOW OF LIFTGATE RAISED FOR ABOUT 30 MINUTES, IT WAS SHATTERED. OCCUPANT DID GET CUT BY PIECES FLYING OF GLASS. TEMPERATURE THAT DAY WAS ABOUT 70 DEGREES. A WITNESS SAW THE INCIDENT, AND TOLD THE OTHER PARTY THAT THE YOUNG LADY DIDN'T DO ANYTHING TO CAUSE THIS. GLASS/ASSEMBLY IS BEING ORDERED AND GLASS HAS BEEN MODIFIED. A FORD DEALERSHIP TOLD HER THAT THEY HAVE NEVER HEARD OF AN INCIDENT LIKE THIS. PLEASE DESCRIBE DETAILS. *AK PE04045.PCO
MANUFACTURER'S DEFECT WITH PAINT. FAILURE TO PROPERLY APPLY UNDER COAT RESULTING IN PAINT CHECKING AND OXIDATION. ENTIRE CAR WILL NEED TO BE REPAINTED.*AK

LETTER FROM LANDY JOHNSON, III (CA) CONCERNING BRAKE SYSTEM FAILURE. CONSUMER REQUESTED A FULL REFUND. *JB......*AK
THE BRAKES FAILED AND THE VEHICLE STARTED MOVING ON ITS OWN. CONSUMER PRESSED ON THE BRAKES FAST AND IT WAS HARD TO STOP VEHICLE. WHEN CONSUMER CHECKED THE BRAKES, IT WAS NOTICED THAT THE BRAKE PEDAL MOVED OVER ON TOP OF THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. THE PRESSURE FORM THE BRAKE PEDAL CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO MOVE ON ITS OWN. THE BRAKE LIGHTS REMAINED ON AND IN TURN DAMAGED THE BATTERY. CONSUMER WOULD LIKE FOR FORD TO BUY BACK THE VEHICLE. *JG
BRAKES FAILED!!. THE BRAKE PEDAL MOVED OVER AND ON TOP OF THE GAS PEDAL. THE PRESSURE FROM THE BRAKE PEDAL CAUSED THE EXPLORER TO MOVE ON IT OWN, TOWARDS A GROUP OF PEOPLE IN THE DALLAS CONVENTION CENTER PARKING LOT.S. I PRESSED ON THE BRAKES, FAST AND HARD, AND THEN THE EXPLORER STOPPED. MOREOVER, THE EXPLORER PICKED UP SPEED UNTIL I STEPPED ON THE BRAKES. THE 2002 EXPLORER WAS REPAIRED UNDER WARRANTY BY PRESTIGE FORD IN GARLAND TEXAS . I ASKED A REASON FOR THE BRAKE TO FAIL IN A NEW EXPLORER. I STATED THAT MY FAMILY ARE AFRAID FOR LIVES AND NO LONGER WANT THE SUV. RICK BAKER AT PASADENA FORD OFFERED SAFETY INSPECTION, I IN TURN TOOK TO SUV IN FOR AN SAFETY INSPECTION, NOW SAFE .PER FORD , I ALSO STATED MY FAMILY I ARE AFRAID OF EXPLORER, AND WANT OTHER EXPLORER DRIVERS WARNED BEFORE LIVES ARE LOST. PASADENA FORD DEALER, BRAD WILSON SAID THAT HE WILL SUBMIT MY COMPLAINT TO FORDS MOTORS CORP. AND MAIL A COPY TO ME. TO DATE NOT A NO COPY OF THE LETTER, OR REMIBURSMENT FOR OUT OF POCKET EXPENSE. THE TRIP CAUSED EXTREME FINANCIAL HARDSHIP UNABLE TO PAY LEASEING COMPANY. TO THE LEASING COMPANY IS TAKING THE EXPLORER FOR NONE PAYMENT. PLEASE HELP. VIBRATION AND DRONE/ROAR SOUND AT SPEEDS OF 64MPH AND GREATER. 4 ATTEMPTS MADE TO REPAIR, PROBLEM STILL EXISTS. REAR END ASSEMBLY REPLACED AS WELL AS TWO AXLE SHAFTS AND DRIVE SHAFT REINDEXED. *AK
WHILE GIVING ACCELERATION AT ANY SPEED AND NO WARNING ACCELERATOR PEDAL WILL GET STUCK, AND IT WILL BE HARD TO STOP VEHICLE. DEALER NOTIFIED. *AK

THE FRONT PASSENGER-SIDE SEAT BELT UNIT LOCKS UP IN FULLY RETRACTED POSITION, RENDERING IT TOTALLY UNUSABLE.*AK
MY FAMILY AND I WERE TRAVELING ON VACATION ON JULY 20,2002. WE WERE DRIVING OUR NEW FORD EXPLORER XLT. I STOPPED FOR FUEL AND WAS RE-ENTERING THE INTERSTATE. TRAFFIC WAS HEAVY SO I HAD TO ACCELERATE TO ABOUT 60MPH TO ENTER THE TRAFFIC. AS I MADE MY ENTRANCE, I LET OFF THE ACCELERATOR AS I WAS BETWEEN TWO 18 WHEELERS. I REMOVED MY FOOT FROM THE ACCELERATOR AND THE VEHICLE CONTINUED AT FULL SPEED ALMOST REAR ENDING THE SEMI. I WAS APPLYING MY BRAKE WITH ALL MY STRENGTH TO NO AVAIL. THE VEHICLE CHARGED AHEAD. I STEERED TO THE SHOULDER AVOIDING THE SEMI AND BEGAN STOMPING THE ACCELERATOR AT WHICH TIME IT FINALLY RELEASED. MY FAMILY AND I WERE TERRIFIED. I GOT THE VEHICLE BACK TO MY DEALER IN LEXINGTON WHERE IT WAS EXAMINED AND THE POSITION TAKEN THAT THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE. "THE PROBLEM COULDN'T BE VERIFIED". I WAS TOLD TO COME AND GET MY VEHICLE THAT NOTHING IS WRONG WITH IT. MY WIFE AND DAUGHTER ARE TERRIFIED OF THE VEHICLE AND WE CAN GET NO RELIEF FROM FORD. I DID CONTACT FORD IN DETROIT AND GOT THE SAME ANSWER-NOTHING WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE.*AK
I PURCHASED MY '02 EXPLORER NEW. FROM THE BEGINING THE SAME PROBLEM PERSISTS. WITH YOUR FOOT ON THE BRAKE, IF YOU PLACE THE VEHICLE IN PARK AND REMOVE YOUR FOOT FROM THE BRAKE THE VEHICLE WILL ROLL FOWARD APPROX 1-2 FT. IT CONCERNS ME. THERE HAVE BEEN MANY INSTANCES WHEN PURCHASING FUEL THAT I HAVE NEARLY ROLLED INTO A PEDESTRIAN FROM A DEAD STOP. I HAVE ASKED THE DEALER ABOUT THIS PROBLEM ONLY TO BE TOLD IT IS NOMAL FOR THIS VEHICLE. I DON'T THINK ANY VEHICLE SHOULD MAKE THAT PRONOUNCED A ROLL WHEN REMOVING YOUR FOOT FROM THE BRAKE. *AK
VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED IN APRIL 2002. VEHICLE BROKE DOWN IN JULY WHILE CONSUMER WAS DRIVING, ALMOST CAUSING AN ACCIDENT. DEALER ADVISED CONSUMER THAT TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED.*AK
WHEN THE CONSUMER APPLIED THE BRAKES, THE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. *NLM *AK *SCC. THE VEHICLE EXPERIENCED FAILURE ON 3 SEPARATE OCCASIONS, THE DEALER REPLACED THE CALIPERS AND THE FRONT AND REAR ROTORS. *JB

WHEN COMING TO A STOP ON AN INCLINE TRANSMISSION SHIFTS TO NEUTRAL, CAUSING VEHICLE TO ROLL BACKWARDS. DEALER STATED THERE IS A TSB ON THIS ISSUE, TO REFILL TRANSMISSION FLUID. FORD HAS NO REMEDY FOR IT AT THIS TIME. TRANSMISSION FLUID LEAKS FROM CONVERTER HOUSING INTO TRANSFER CASE.*AK
TRANSMISSION FAILURE ON FORD EXPLORER. SELF ENCLOSED TRANSMISSION, NO DIPSTICK FOR CHECKING FLUID LEVELS, POORLY DESIGNED CONCEPT. HERE IS WEBSITE WITH 428 COMPLAINTS AGAINST THIS PARTICULAR MODEL/YEAR. ALL THE SAME ISSUE. *TR
OVERDRIVE LIGHT WAS FLASHING, THEN STAYED ON. DEALER DETERMINED TRANSMISSION HAD TO BE REPLACED.*AK
WHILE DRIVING CALIPERS ARE NOT CATCHING ONTO BRAKES, MAKING IT HARD FOR CONSUMER TO STOP. DEALER NOTIFIED.*AK
LAST SUMMER (JULY 2002) DURING A MILITARY MOVE FROM GA TO AZ I NOTICED THAT MY WINDSHIELD HAD A LARGE PIECE OF GLASS MISSING ON THE OUTTER RIGHT EDGE THAT YOU COULD NOT SEE UNTIL YOU ACTUALLY GOT RIGHT UP ON THE WINDSHIELD. PART OF IT WAS VISIBLE TO AND PART OF IT WAS HIDDEN BEHIND THE RUBBER SEAL THAT IS AROUND THE WINDSHIELD. THIS WINDSHIELD WAS ACTUALLY INSTALLED WITH THIS PIECE MISSING FROM IT WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS BUILT AND SENT TO THE DEALERSHIP. ALSO, THE REAR GLASS HATCH, GAS SHOCK TWISTED FROM ITS ORIGINAL POSITION AND CAUSED THE WINDOW TO BE OFF CENTER BY ABOUT AN INCH OR MORE. AFTER FIXING IT THREE TIMES IT HAD TO BE REPLACED. BOTH OF THESE PROBLEMS (THE WINDSHIELD AND THE GAS SHOCK) HAVE BEEN FIXED BY MY LOCAL DEALERSHIP AND THUS FAR HAVE HELD UP. THERE ARE NUMEROUS OTHER COMPLAINTS THAT I HAVE ON MY VEHICLE THAT INCLUDE THE ELECRICAL SYSTEM NOT FUNCTIONING PROPERLY. WHEN YOU TURN THE TRUCK ON SOMETIMES ALL THE DASHBOARD LIGHTS STAY ON AS WELL AS THE INTERIOR LIGHTS AND YOU HAVE TO SHUT THE TRUCK DOWN AND BACK ON SEVERAL TIMES IN ORDER FOR THEM TO GO OUT. THE TRUCK WILL SOMETIMES STALL AT TAKE OFF OR WILL LURCH WHILE SHIFITING INTO A HIGHER GEAR AND HAS TOTALLY SHUT DOWN WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD ON A FEW OCCASIONS. THE TRIM PAINT ON THE DOORS, BOTH FRONT AND PASSENGER HAS FADED THERE ARE RUSTED SPOTS IN THE PAINT ON THE TOP OF THE VEHICLE, AND THE HOOD HAS A VERY BAD ORANGE PEEL EFFECT ON IT WITH GRIT IN THE PAINT. THE LEFT REAR SPEAKER HAS BUSTED AND THE PANEL ON THE REAR HATCH BELOW HAS BROKEN LOOSE AS WELL AS ONE OF THE PLASTIC BRACKET COVERS ON THE BACK OF THE PASSENGER SEATS. PE04045.PCO
MOUNTING BRACKET ON GLASS LIFTGATE BECAME DETACHED FROM STRUT-LIFT MECHANISM JOINT UPON REACHING MAXIMUM EXTENSION CAUSING GLASS TO FALL ONTO MY HEAD. REPORTED TO DEALER BUT NOT REPAIRED/REPLACED DUE TO PARTS N/A. OFTEN HAVE DIFFICULTY TURNING IGNITION SWITCH AFTER INSERTING EITHER OF THE FACTORY KEYS. IT REQUIRES A "JIGGLING" MOTION TO ENGAGE AND TURN IGNITION. PE04045.PCO
CAR WAS ON A FAMILY TRIP WHEN ABS LIGHT CAME ON FOR NO REASON. DEALERSHIP CAN NOT GET THE LIGHT BACK ON. CAR WAS STARTED IN THE MORNING AND AIR BAG LIGHT FLASHED AND THEN STAYED ON AND THE DEALERSHIP SAID IT WAS DUE TO A SHORT. DAY AFTER IT WAS IN THE SHOP FOR THE AIR BAG LIGHT THE CAR WOULD NOT START. WOULD NOT TURN OVER. IT WILL BE IN THE SHOP AGAIN. FOR THE THIRD TIME IN 6 MONTHS.*AK
MY 2002 FORD EXPLORER WAS PARKED IN AN PARKING LOT. RETURNING TO MY VEHICLE I ATTEMPTED TO PLACE MY ITEMS IN THE BACK SECTION OF THE SUV. WHEN THE HATCHBACK GLASS WAS OPENED THE LEFT HYDRAULIC LIFT SHATTERED THE REAR GLASS. THE GLASS FLEW TO THE FRONT SEAT AND 3 CAR LENGHTS OVER IN THE PARKING LOT. I HAVE TAKEN MY FORD EXPLORER BACK TO THE DEALER FOR REPAIR. THE REAR PANEL WAS REPLACED AFTER A MONTH OF WAITING. BUT WE ARE NOT FULLY SATISFIED WITH THE REPAIR. FORD IS SENDING REPLACEMENT PARTS THAT HAVE A BULDGE IN THE BOTTOM PANELS. SO WE ARE ON OUR SECOND DOOR AND STILL WAITING FOR A NEW PART. IT IS FUNNY HOW YOU CAN BUY A VEHICLE THAT LOOKS PERFECT BUT WHEN YOU GET REPLACEMENT PARTS YOU GET LESS THAN PERFECT. MAKES ME WONDER IF THEY ARE REALLY FORD PARTS. THE PROBLEM WE ARE HAVING NOW IS NOT A SAFETY HAZARD, BUT IT IS A VALUE PROBLEM IF WE SELL OR TRADE IN THIS SUV. WE ARE VERY DISAPPOINTED THAT AFTER BUYING THE VEHICLE WE WHERE NEVER TOLD OF THE RECALL. THIS PROBLEM WAS RECALLED IN APRIL OF 2001.*AK PE04045.PCO
FAULTY ANTI-THEFT MODULE(SHORTING) MAKING VEHICLE UNABLE TO OPERATE. AT THIS TIME FORD IS UNABLE TO REPAIR OR REPLACE MODULE LEAVING OWNER STRANDED. FORD HAS TOLD US THAT THEY ARE WORKING ON A SOLUTION BUT AT THIS TIME THERE IS NOT ONE. HOW MANY OTHERS ARE DRIVING WITHT HIS UNSAFE MODULE?
WE HAVE 2002 FORD EXPLORER SUV WITH ONLY 68K MILES AND WE HAD TO HAVE AN ENTIRELY NEW TRANSMISSION PUT IN IT,JUST A YEAR AND A HALF EARLIER WITH LESS THAN 59K MILES WE HAD A NEW SHIFT SOLENOID REPLACED. A YEAR AND A HALF LATER THE TRANSMISSION STARTED DOING THE SAME THING AGAIN WHICH PROMPTED THE NEW TRANSMISSION .AT THE TRANSMISSION SHOP WE WERE INFORMED THAT THEY HAVE DONE NUMEROUS COMPLETE TRANSMISSION OVERHAULS ON THESE EXPLORERS AND JAGS, WITH VERY LOW MILES, JUST IN THE LAST SIX MONTHS. THIS EXPLORER HAS BEEN WELL MAINTAINED AND NOT DRIVEN THAT MUCH THAT IT WOULD HAVE NEEDED SUCH A MAJOR UNDERTAKING WITH SUCH LOW MILES. WE HAVE BEEN CHECKING AROUND AND TRANSMISSION SHOPS HAVE TOLD US THEY HAVE SEEN ALOT OF THE EXPLORERS LIKE OURS WITH LOW MILEAGE NEEDING COMPLETE REPLACEMENTS DON'T KNOW WHAT IT TAKES TO GET A RECALL INTO EFFECT BUT I AM HOPING THIS MIGHT BE A STEP THAT NEEDS TO BE TAKEN BY INDIVIDUALS. WE HAVE SPENT OVER $3500 IN THE LAST YEAR AND A HALF ON OUR EDDIE BAUER AND REGRET THE DAY WE PURCHASED IT. OUR 1986 CHEVY WAGON WITH 133K NEVER HAS GIVEN US ANY PROBLEM THIS BIG. *NM
LEFT REAR SPRING BROKEN APPROXIMATELY 3" FROM TOP OF SPRING. SPRING PROTECTIVE COATING ONLY 20% REMAINING AND ESSENTIALLY NON FUNCTIONAL. EXTREMELY HEAVY RUST IN THIS REGION OF SPRING. *TR
SHIFTER HANGS-UP WHEN TRYING TO PUT CAR IN PARK. WHEN CAR WAS NEW THE DEALER SAID THEY WOULD HAVE TO PULL THE TRANS. APART TO FIX IT BUT IN A FEW MONTHS THE BURR WOULD WEAR AND IT WOULD WORK FINE.(ANOTHER DEALER LIE). I THINK IT IS GETTING WORSE. THE CAR NOW HAS ONLY 28,000 MILES ON IT. *TR

WHILE TRAVELING ABOUT 65MPH ON HIGHWAY ANOTHER VEHICLE MADE A U TURN. UPON IMPACT, AIRBAGS DIDN'T DEPLOY. DEALERSHIP WAS AWARE OF PROBLEM.*AK CONSUMERS VEHICLE HIT OTHER VEHICLE BROAD SIDE. AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY WITH THE DIRECT FRONTAL IMPACT, THERE WAS ONE INJURY IN THE ACCIDENT. *JG
WINDOW FRAME DOES NOT HAVE A PROTECTIVE SHIELD, IT CRACKED ABOUT 5 INCHES , WITH SMALLEST HIT OF A PEBBLE.*AK
I HAVE THE WARRANTY AND THEY WILL NOT COVER. I AM DRIVING WITHOUT A SPARE TIRE.*AK
WHILE TRAVELING 55 - 65 MPH A HIGH PITCHED WHINNING NOISE WOULD DEVELOP IN THE REAR PORTION OF THE VEHICLE. THE NOISE WOULD SUBSIDE AS THE PEDAL WAS RELEASED. HOWEVER THE NOISE WOULD INCREASE AS THE GAS PEDAL WAS SLIGHTLY PRESSED TO ADVANCE SPEED. TOOK TO DEALER ON 6/11/02. MECHANIC CLAIMS TO KNOW WHAT IS CAUSING NOISE. TRUCK IS SITTING UP ON RACK APART AND THE TOOL TO REMOVE AXLES IS ON NATIONAL BACKORDER. NEEDLESS TO SAY THE LOANER VEHICLE I AM CURRENTLY USING HAS THE SAME SOUND, BUT IS NOT AS SEVERE AT THE MOMENT. I FEEL THIS MAY BE A DESIGN PROBLEM THAT MAY NOT BE FIXED AS EASILLY AS HOPED.*AK

IM COMPLAINED THAT THE STEERING WAS TOO SENSITIVE. I SWERVED TO AVOID A TIRE IN THE ROAD AND LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICEL. TOOK CAR TO DEALED WHO FOUND NO PROBLEM. DAYS LATER I RECEIVED A CALL FROM THE DEALER THAT THEY HAD A FACTORY REP COMING TO TEST MY CAR. (WHY IF THERE IS NOTHING WRONG) THE FACTORY MAN SAID HE ROAD TESTED THE CAR AND PUT IT ON A LIFT. HE FOUND NO PROBLEM THAT IS THE WAY A SHORT WHEEL BASE SHOULD DRIVE. FORDS BIG EXCUSE WAS THERE IS A STICKER ON THE SUN VISOR THAT READS "AVOID ABRUPT MANOUVERS" THE REP EVEN WROTE ON MY SERVICE TICKET THAT THE LABLE WAS IN PLACE. THE CAR CAN FLIP OVER BUT WE TOLD YOU SO. I DONT THINK THIS IS SAFE AND IT IS NOT RIGHT FOR FORD TO KNOW THEY HAVE ANOTHER PROBLEM AND WASH IT AWAY WITH A LABLE. DRIVE DOWN A HIGHWAY AND TELL ME IF YOU CAN AVOID ABRUPT MOVES. HOW COME AIRLINES DONT PUT STICKERS ON THE SEATS THAT THIS PLANE MIGHT FALL FROM THE SKY. FORD HAS A PROBLEM AND THE PUBLIC WILL PAY WITH THEIR LIVES.*AK
DT: THE ABS LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE DASHBOARD PANEL WITHOUT ANY ACCIDENT. THE OWNER'S MANUAL STATED IF THE LIGHT ILLUMINATED THE ABS WAS NOT WORKING. THIS HAPPENED IN THE PAST, THERE WAS A REPAIR ON THE AXLE SPEED SENSOR OF THE ABS. THIS LASTED A YEAR, AND LATER VEHICLE HAD TO BE TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER FOR THIS AND THE SENSOR MOUNT, CONTACT POINT WAS CLEANED, AND CLEARED" THE FAULT WARNING CODE ON THE COMPUTER. NOW THE ABS LIGHT WAS ON AGAIN. *AK
I HAVE HAD 4 WHEEL BEARING/HUB ASSEMBLY UNITS FAIL ON MY 2002 FORD EXPLOYER. THE FIRST TO GO WAS AFTER ONLY 20K MILES. THE CAR NOW HAS ~70K MILES AND IN THE SHOP NOW FOR THE SAME REPAIR. A VERY COSTLY REPAIR AND VERY DANGEROUS SITUITION. FORD WILL NOT EVEN ACKNOWLEDGE IT IS A PROBELM BUT UNDERSTAND IS HAS BEEN AN ON-GOING PROBLEM WITH MANY CUSTOMERS.

WHILE DRIVING AT 45MPH, WAS INVOLVED IN A REAR END COLLISION. UPON IMPACT, NONE OF THE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED. *AK THE SENSOR WAS BENT UP AND SIDEWAYS. THE SEAT BELT ALLOWED CONSUMER TO SLIDE UNDER. BOTH KNEES HIT THE DASHBOARD. CONSUMER SUFFERS FROM UPPER AND LOWER BACK PAIN AND SORE KNEES. CONSUMER IS NOT SURE IF THERE IS AN AIRBAG IN THE VEHICLE. *JG
