I HAVE 25,000 MILES ON THESE TIRES AND THEY ARE PEELING APART. AT 20,000 I NOTICED IT AND TOOK TO DEALERSHIP. THEY MADE EXCUSES AND SAID I RAN SOMETHING OVER. THERE ARE OTHER RECALLS ON SIMILAR TIRES. THEY ARE LITERALLY PEEKING APART. THIS VEHICLE IS ONLY 2 1/2 YEARS NEW.
EVEN UNDER WARRANTY THERE WERE SPORADIC TIMES THE FRONT SUSPENSION/STEERING WOULD MAKE A LOAD THUMP NOISE. THIS USUALLY HAPPENED WHEN BACKING OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY AND SOMETIMES WHEN PULLING OUT OF A PARKING SPACE. THE DEALER COULD NEVER DUPLICATE THE NOISE SO THEY FOUND NOTHING WRONG WITH IT. NOW AT 48K MILES AND OUT OF WARRANTY THE SOUND HAPPENS MUCH MORE OFTEN. MY WIFE SAID ONCE THE STEERING APPEARED TO MOMENTARILY LOCK UP AND HAD TO PULL THE STEERING WHEEL PRETTY HARD TO FREE IT UP. I FOUND SEVERAL OTHER INTERNET SITES STATING THAT THE STEERING SYSTEM IS NEEDING REPLACED ON MANY EXPLORERS WITH RELATIVELY LOW MILES AT A COST TO THE OWNERS OF OVER $2000.
The contact owns a 2016 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that after it had rained, water entered the vehicle through the sunroof and would accumulate inside the roof of the vehicle. While coming to a stop while driving, the water would flow to the front of the vehicle and leak inside the cabin through the ceiling light console. The contact had taken the vehicle to a dealer on multiple occasions where they replaced the flooring and the sunroof; however, the failure returned after each repair. The vehicle was also taken to an independent mechanic where the contact was informed that the drain tube inside the sunroof had become clogged which resulted in water accumulation inside the vehicle. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but offered no assistance. The contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was unknown.
CARBON MONOXIDE RELEASE INTO CAR REMAINS EVEN AFTER DEALER REPAIR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2016 FORD EXPLORER. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 70 MPH, THE POWER STEERING FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN TO FLAGSHIP FORD (850 FERN DRIVE, BALDWIN, WISCONSIN 54002, (715) 684-4520) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE POWER STEERING UNIT WAS FAULTY AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO BE REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND STATED THAT THERE WAS NO RECALL ON THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 52,000.
WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD MY POWER STEERING WENT OUT. I HAVE AROUND 50,000 MILES ON MY 2016 FORD EXPLORER. I HAVE HAD IT WORKED ON 3 TIMES AND IT CONTINUES TO HAVE THE SAME ISSUE. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE CAR AND THOSE ON THE ROAD. MANY PEOPLE HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT THIS ISSUE, YET FORD HAS NOT ISSUED A RECALL.
WHEN DRIVING MY FORD EXPLORER 2016 THE STEERING WHEEL STARTED MAKING A SOUND WHEN THE WHEEL WAS TURNED, BOTH WHEN TURNING FROM A STOP OR GOING AROUND A CURVE. IT WOULD ALSO CATCH AND SORT OF STICK WHEN THE WHEEL WAS TURNED AND WOULDN'T EASILY TURN BACK TO NORMAL AFTER THE TURN OR CURVE HAD BEEN MADE. WE TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND THE RACK AND PINION HAS TO BE REPLACED, COSTING $1885. IT WAS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE BC OF THE STEERING WELL STICKING.
POWER STEERING FAILED WHILE DRIVING THE CAR ON A BUSY PUBLIC STREET. EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO MANEUVER THE VEHICLE SAFELY OFF THE ROAD.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2016 FORD EXPLORER. WHILE DRIVING 35 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING AND LOST POWER. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO STEVE ROGERS FORD (LOCATED AT 9760 OH-64, WATERVILLE, OH 43566, (419) 878-8151) TO BE DIAGNOSED. THE MECHANIC WAS UNABLE TO RETRIEVE A FAULT CODE OR DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS INTERMITTENT AND PRIMARILY OCCURRED DURING HOT, HUMID WEATHER WITH THE AIR CONDITIONING ACTIVATED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 72,400.
OUR VEHICLE HAS 13451 MILES. THE FACTORY TIRES HANKOOK 255/50R20 105H VENTUS S1 NOBLE 2 ARE SCALING ON ALL FOUR TIRES TO A DEGREE.
SINCE THE VEHICLE HAS REACHED 40,000 MILES WE HAVE NOTICED HARD SHIFTING WHEN ACCELERATING. WHEN PUTTING THE VEHICLE IN REVERSE THERE IS A SOUND LIKE THE ENGINE MAY FALL OUT OF THE CAR.
WHEN CAR DOES A HARD ACCELERATION AN ODD SMELL IS PROJECTED THROUGH THE VEHICLE AND SMELLS LIKE GAS FUMES. WHEN CAR GRADUALLY ACCELERATES THIS ISSUE DOES NOT HAPPEN.
I BEGAN TO NOTICE A STRONG GAS FUME SMELL IN THE CAB WHILE DRIVING. I HAVE SINCE TAKEN THE VEHICLE TO A FORD DEALERSHIP FOR REPAIRS. THE 'RECALL' REPAIR FOR CO CONCERNS DID NOTHING. I CURRENTLY STILL HAVE THE STRONG SMELL INSIDE CAB.
THE TIRES ON THIS VEHICLE HAVE GONE COMPLETELY BALD DESPITE PROPER PRESSURE AND ROTATION. WITH ONLY 22000 MILES ON THIS VEHICLE IT IS MORE THAN CLEAR THERE IS A MANUFACTURER ISSUE WITH THESE TIRES. THERE ARE OVER 2000 ON-LINE ARTICLES REGARDING THIS ISSUE BUT VERY FEW KNOW TO FILE THEIR COMPLAINTS HERE. THE GOVT. NEEDS TO TAKE ACTION ON THIS LATEST EXPLORER TIRE ISSUE BEFORE MORE INJURIES OR DEATHS OCCUR. BOTH THE MAKER AND FORD ARE POINTING FINGERS AT EACHOTHER WHILE I HAVE 10,000 MILES REMAINING ON MY LEASE THE DEALER SAID I CAN REPLACE THE TIRES FOR $500. THAT'S GREAT FOR THEM AND THE NEXT OWNER THEY SELL IT TO, BUT NOT SO MUCH FOR ME.
A WEEK AGO WHILE BACKING OUT OF MY GARAGE THE "STEERING FAULT" ALARM CAME ON MY DASH, SO I STOPPED PUSHED THE OK BUTTON AND IT WENT AWAY. CONTINUED TO BACK OUT AND STEERING THE WAS FINE. THIS WEEK IT HAS HAPPENED TWICE AGAIN ALREADY. ONE TIME WAS WHEN I JUST STARTED THE CAR. I WONDERED WHAT COULD BE GONG SO I TRIED TO TURN STEERING WHEEL WHILE STILL PARKED AND IT WAS A LITTLE MORE DIFFICULT AND I COULD HEAR A GRINDING TYPE NOISE. SO I THEN PUSHED THE OK BUTTON LIKE BEFORE AND THE STEERING STARTED TO WORK PROPERLY AGAIN. THE LAST TIME IT HAPPENED I WAS ACTUALLY DRIVING. I JUST TURNED ONTO A ROAD AND WAS ACCELERATING THEN THE "STEERING FAULT" ALARM WENT OFF AGAIN. AS I SLOWED BACK DOWN AND TURNED TOWARDS THE SHOULDER I COULD FEEL THAT GRINDING IN THE STEELING WHEEL. WHILE STILL ROLLING TO A STOP I PUSHED THE OK BUTTON AND THE ALARM WENT OFF AND THE POWER STEERING STARTED TO WORK AGAIN. THIS CAR ONLY HAS 42,000 MILES ON IT. I FIND IT A BIT RIDICULOUS THAT NOTHING IS BEING DONE ABOUT THIS ISSUE. I CAN ONLY ASSUME THAT EACH TIME IT HAPPENS IT WILL GET WORSE UNTIL EVENTUALLY I HAVE NO STEERING AND POTENTIALLY CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. I ASSUME THAT MOST PEOPLE, LIKE ME, BOUGHT THE EXPLORER BECAUSE IT WOULD MAKE A GREAT FAMILY CAR THAT IS SAFE. NOW I FEEL THAT I HAVE BOUGHT A DEATH TRAP.
OK LET'S START WITH THE FACT THAT WE'VE HAD STEERING ISSUES FROM THE START WITH THIS VEHICLE. WE PAID $700 TO FIX OR BAND AID THE PROBLEM LAST MONTH. SO, WHEN IT CAME TIME FOR OUR SUMMER VACATION WE ACTUALLY CONSIDERED RENTING A CAR BECAUSE WE STILL DIDN'T THINK IT WAS RIGHT. RENT A VEHICLE WHEN WE HAVE AN ALMOST BRAND NEW VEHICLE IN THE GARAGE WITH A $500 A MONTH CAR PAYMENT?!?! AGAINST OUR BETTER JUDGMENT, WE TOOK IT FROM PA TO FL, WELL ALMOST. ALONG I-95 IN SOUTH CAROLINA AT ABOUT 11PM THE STEERING SEIZED WITH OUR FAMILY IN THE CAR. WE HAD TO GET A HOTEL ROOM, RENT A CAR AND LEAVE THE POS IN SC TO CONTINUE OUR VACATION. IT'S NOW ALMOST 3 WEEKS IN AND IT'S STILL IN SC. WE'VE ALWAYS BEEN FOREIGN CAR PEOPLE. WE HAD A HONDA PILOT FOR 12 YEARS, NEVER A PROBLEM WITH IT. IF THERE WAS A PROBLEM, IT WAS COVERED BY THE AWESOME WARRANTY OR IT WAS A RECALL. LOTS OF RECALLS, MANUFACTURER AND HONDA. WHICH, UP TILL NOW I THOUGHT WAS A PAIN IN THE ASS! NOW, I GET THAT AT LEAST THEY HAVE ENOUGH INTEGRITY TO HAVE RECALLS! FORD MOTOR COMPANY HAS THE WORST WARRANTY AND 0 INTEGRITY! WE LOVED THE LOOK AND FEEL OF THIS VEHICLE. LOOKS DEFINITELY AREN'T EVERYTHING...LESSON LEARNED. WE WILL TAKE THE LOSS ON TRADING IT IN AND GOING BACK TO HONDA, TOYOTA OR NISSAN TO KEEP OUR FAMILY SAFE. I GUESS FORD IS WAITING FOR A FATALITY?!?!
STEER FAULT ASSIST LIGHT CAKE ON GOING DOWN THE HIGHWAY AT 70MPH WHILE ON VACATION. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME WE WILL BE REPAIRING THE STEERING. OUR VEHICLE IS A 2016WITH UNDER 40K MILES ON IT. RIDICULOUS AND VERY DANGEROUS!! WE ONLY OWNED FOREIGN VEHICLES IE. HONDA, TOYOTA AND NEVER HAD ANY ISSUES. THIS VEHICLE HAS BEEN A HEADACHE FROM THE START...WE LOVED THE LOOK AND FEATURES. HONESTLY, YOU CAN'T JUDGE A VEHICLE BUT IT'S LOOK WE SHOULD'VE KNOWN BETTER. ALSO, WE'VE OWNED HONDA'S AND THERE WERE RECALLS ALL THE TIME USUALLY SOMETHING SIMPLE AND EASY TO REPAIR BUT FORD MOTOR CO OBVIOUSLY HAS AN ISSUE WITH STEERING ON THESE VEHICLES AND THE ONLY RECALL WE HAVE IS SOMETHING WITH THE SEAT?!?! THE STEERING MALFUNCTIONING ON THE HIGHWAY IS A LITTLE BIT BIGGER THAN THAT. SO, WE WILL JUST IIGNORE AND LOSE CUSTOMERS TO FOREIGN VEHICLES. SMART FORD!!
AFTER REACHING 43,000 MILES. THE EPAS LIGHT CAME ON AND WAS UNABLE TO STEER SAFELY. 6 HRS FROM HOME. CURRENTLY GETTING REPAIRED TOTAL BILL IS $2000. I WAS DRIVING , PULLED OVER TO GET GAS, KILLED THE ENGINE, GOT THE FUEL, STARTED IT BACK UP AND THATS WHEN THE LIGHT CAME ON FOR THE STEERING ASSIST FAULT. THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD. THERE IS MULTIPLE ISSUES ONLINE ABOUT THIS HAPPENED. A RECALL WAS CREATED ON EARLIER YEAR MODELS BUT NOT THIS ONE. WHY???
THE PROBLEM STARTED WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEED. I CAN BEST DESCRIBE IT AS A "STICKINESS" AT ABOUT 5 DEGREES OFF CENTER. THERE WAS A NOTICEABLE "CATCH" WHERE IT WOULD BECOME DIFFICULT TO TURN AND I WOULD HAVE TO FORCE THE WHEEL TO KEEP TURNING. THIS VERY DISTRACTING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, AND POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS. IN THE FOLLOWING WEEKS, THE PROBLEM HAS GOTTEN WORSE, TO INCLUDE INTERMITTENT SHUDDERING, THAT FEELS LIKE DRIVING OVER RUMBLE STRIPS, SQUEEKING AND CLICKING AT LOW SPEEDS, AND IF LOCKING THE STEERING OUT IN ONE DIRECTION OR ANOTHER THE WHEEL WILL "JUMP" BACK. UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION, THIS SEEMS LINKED TO THE ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING ASSIST, WHICH THOUGH IT HASN'T FAILED COMPLETELY, IS DEFINITELY FAILING. AFTER READING OTHER SIMILAR COMPLAINTS, I NO LONGER FEEL SAFE DRIVING THIS VEHICLE WITH MY THREE KIDS, AND AM NOT WILLING TO PAY THE $2,600 REPAIR PRICE FOR A VEHICLE THAT IS ONLY 2 AND A HALF YEARS OLD. I AM NOW BACK TO DRIVING MY 12 YEAR OLD TRUCK, WHICH WHILE IT HAS IT'S OWN PROBLEMS, AT LEAST IT IS SAFE.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FAILURE OCCURRED EVERY DAY SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED TWO YEARS AGO. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER (DON CHALMERS FORD, 2500 RIO RANCHO BOULEVARD SE, RIO RANCHO, NM 87124) SEVERAL TIMES, BUT THE FAILURE WAS NOT ABLE TO BE DUPLICATED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 25,000.
I LEASED A NEW FORD EXPLORER SPORT MODEL BACK IN MAY OF 2016. AS OF TODAY'S DATE I ONLY HAVE 18,977 MILES ON IT. THE HANKOOK VENTUS S1 NOBLE2 ORIGINAL FACTORY TIRES HAVE ALMOST NO TREAD LEFT ON ANY OF THE 4 TIRES. I PAID NO ATTENTION TO THE TREAD UNTIL I HYDROPLANED ON THE HIGHWAY. A QUICK GOOGLE SEARCH SHOWS THAT SEVERAL PEOPLE HAVE THIS SAME COMPLAINT WITH THESE TIRES. I SPOKE WITH FORD AND THE TIRE MANUFACTURER AND HAVE GOTTEN NO WHERE, EACH BLAMING EACH OTHER. THIS IS A 50,000 MILE TIRE HOWEVER LOSING ALL IT'S TREAD BEFORE 20,000 MILES. THIS IS FRAUD AND A SAFETY ISSUE THAT SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED IMMEDIATELY. THERE HAS BEEN RECALLS ON THIS SAME TIRE HOWEVER NOT FOR THIS SIZE 255/50R20 105H.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2016 FORD EXPLORER EQUIP WITH HANKOOK VENTUS S1 NOBLE 2; TIRE SIZE: 255/50R20-108H AND THE DOT NUMBER: 5MNC 1A H0118. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE INSPECTING THE TIRES, IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE TIRES HAD EXPERIENCED CRACKING AND GUDGES ON THE INSIDE AND OUTSIDE OF THE TIRES. THE FAILURE WAS PRESENT ON ALL FOUR TIRES. THE CONTACT ALSO INDICATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE VEHICLE WOULD SHAKE AND VIBRATE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE LOCAL DEALER AUTONATION FORD LOCATED AT 7700 BLANDING BLVD, JACKSONVILLE, FL 32244 WHO REPLACED ALL FOUR TIRES WITH THE SAME BRAND SIZE AND MODEL TIRES BUT APPROXIMATELY 13,000 MILES LATER THE SAME FAILURE HAD OCCURRED. THE CONTACT WAS UNABLE TO REACH OUT TO THE MANUFACTURER IN REFERENCE TO THE FAILURES. THE VEHICLE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 18,000 AND THE FAILURE TIRE MILEAGE WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2016 FORD EXPLORER. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 70 MPH, THE POWER STEERING SUDDENLY FAILED AND MADE THE STEERING WHEEL VERY DIFFICULT TO TURN. DURING THE FAILURE, THE "STEERING FAULT" AND "SERVICE ADVANCE TRAC" MESSAGES DISPLAYED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE LOCAL DEALER (TOMS FORD, 200 HWY 35, KEY PORT, NJ) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE POWER STEERING ASSEMBLY WAS FAULTY AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 71,000.
COMPLETE LOSS OF POWER STEERING WHILE DRIVING MY EXPLORER. WAS DOING 70 ON THE HIGHWAY. 65,000 MILES ON VEHICLE ONLY HAVE HAD THE SUV FOR 2 YEARS. 2300 TO FIX THE PROBLEM. WE WERE DRIVING WHEN WE LOST POWER STEERING CONTROL OF THE CAR WITH MY ENTIRE FAMILY IN THE VEHICLE (WIFE AND 3 KIDS UNDER 12)
AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS (70MPH) POWER STEERING AND TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEMS WENT OUT. DIAGNOSTICS FLASHED ONTO THE DASHBOARD - "STEERING LOSS STOP SAFELY TERRAIN MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FAULT SERVICE ADVANCETRAC HILL START ASSIST NOT AVAILABLE" POWER STEERING AND TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEMS WERE OFFLINE. I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE BACK TO MY HOUSE FIVE MILES AWAY, BUT AM UNABLE TO MOVE THE VEHICLE OUT OF IT'S PARKING SPOT.
WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY (75 MPH), SEVERAL ALERTS POPPED UP OUT OF NOWHERE - HILL ASSIST ERROR, STEERING CONTROL ERROR, TERRAIN ASSIST ERROR, STABILITY ERROR. IT TOLD ME TO PULL OVER IMMEDIATELY. ONCE I STOPPED MY CAR AND RESTARTED IT, MY POWER STEERING WAS NO LONGER WORKING. THIS HAS HAPPENED TWICE NOW - BOTH TIMES ON THE FREEWAY. IT'S EXTREMELY DANGEROUS TO HAVE STEERING GO OUT - I'M CONCERNED FOR THE SAFETY OF THE VEHICLE. THE FORD DEALERSHIP IS TELLING ME THAT I NEED TO REPLACE THE ELECTRIC STEERING COMPONENT FOR $2,000. THE CAR HAS LESS THAN 50,000 MILES ON IT, SO IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE THAT THE STEERING COMPONENT WOULD ALREADY NEED REPLACING.
URCHASED NEW 2016 FORD EXPLORER LIMITED 4WD 4DR IN 2016. THE OEM TIRES ON THE VEHICLE ARE HANKOOK VENTUS S1 NOBEL 2 TIRES, SIZED 255/50R20. THE DOT RATING IS "5MNC 1AH 2715". MY FIRST TIRE WAS REPLACED AT 32,789 AT THE LOCAL FORD DEALER UNDER HANKOOK "WARRANTY" BECAUSE THE FRONT TIRE TREAD WAS "FLAKING/PEELING" ON THE INNER TREAD, MIDDLE TREAD AND OUTER TREAD. THE CHARGE WAS PRORATED, MY PORTION $112 PLUS MOUNTING AND BALANCING AND DISPOSAL. AT 33,817 MILES I NOTICED A SECOND TIRE WAS FLAKING AND PEELING SO I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE FORD DEALER I PURCHASED IT FROM. TIRE WAS REPLACED UNDER HANKOOK "WARRANTY" AT 34,171. CURRENTLY THE 2 OTHER TIRES ARE NOT SHOWING THE SAME DEFECT, YET. MY PRORATED COST FOR THE TIRE WAS $152.00 (TIRE FULL PRICE $212) AND I HAD TO PAY FOR MOUNT, BALANCE AND DISPOSAL. TIRE STILL HAD 3/32 LEFT ON TREAD AND TIRE RATED FOR 50,000 MILES. REPLACEMENT TIRE HAS DOT 5MNC 0318 AND OLD TIRE WAS 5MNC 1AH 2715. DEALER STATED HANKOOK MIGHT NOT PAY FOR PRORATED REPLACEMENT OF THE 2 REMAINING TIRES IF THEY BEGIN TO PEEL OR FLAKE. THE LAST 2 TIRES HAVE 3/32 AND 4/32 TREAD LEFT AND DEALER SUGGESTED REPLACEMENT BUT ONLY IF I PAID THE FULL PRICE FOR THEM. I WILL REPLACE THEM USING A DIFFERENT TIRE MANUFACTURER WHEN THEY REACH END OF LIFE WHICH IS 2/32 AND PURCHASE FROM A DIFFERENT MANUFACTURER. MY WIFE WAS BACKING HER 2016 FORD EXPLORER LIMITED OUT OF THE GARAGE WHEN WARNINGS REGARDING POWER STEERING ASSIST FAILURE, TERRAIN MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FAULT, SERVICE ADVANCE TRAC APPEARED ON THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER AND SHE LOST THE ABILITY TO STEER THE VEHICLE. LUCKILY SHE WAS BASICALLY STATIONARY AT THE TIME. THIS WAS THE FIRST INCIDENT OF THIS TYPE, AND UNLIKE OTHER REPORTS I HAVE READ, RESTARTING THE VEHICLE DID NOTHING TO RESTORE THE POWER STEERING. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE WE WERE TOLD THAT THE EPAS ELECTRONIC STEERING SYSTEM HAD FAILED AND THE ENTIRE RACK AND PINION ASSEMBLY WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE THIS IS AN INTEGRATED SYSTEM. WHEN I TOLD THEM THAT I THOUGHT A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE OF THIS TYPE ON A MAJOR SYSTEM WAS UNUSUAL IN A 21/2 YEAR OLD VEHICLE I WAS TOLD THAT THIS WAS SOMETHING THEY HAD SEEN BEFORE AND NOT THAT UNUSUAL. THIS IS A MAJOR AND VERY COSTLY REPAIR, AND EVEN MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE REPAIR COST IS THE SAFETY CONCERN. READING OTHER REPORTS OF PEOPLE LOOSING CONTROL ON THE HIGHWAY WHEN THIS SYSTEM FAILS MAKES ME WONDER IF I SHOULD LET MY WIFE CONTINUE DRIVING THE VEHICLE AFTER THE REPAIR. THE SERVICE PERSONS AT THE DEALERSHIP ECHOED MY CONCERNS AND GAVE ME A NUMBER TO CONTACT FORD. IT APPEARS THERE IS NO UPDATE TO THE EPAS SYSTEM AND THE REPLACEMENT IS THE SAME AS THE OLD FAULTY ASSEMBLY. WE HAVE OWNED 3 FORD/MERCURY VEHICLES OF THIS TYPE AND IN THE PAST HAVE BEEN VERY PLEASED. IT APPEARS FROM REPORTS THAT FORD IS WELL AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM BECAUSE OTHER VEHICLES FROM OTHER MODEL YEARS HAVE BEEN RECALLED FOR EPAS ISSUES AND FAILURE. UNLESS THERE IS A RECALL AND AN UPDATE TO THE STEERING SYSTEM I MUST CONSIDER REPLACING THIS VEHICLE BECAUSE OF THE SAFETY CONCERN.

2016 FORD EXPLORER KNEE AIRBAG INJURY-ON 7/13/2018 WHILE DRIVING ON A CITY STREET, A LOW SPEED/LOW IMPACT COLLISION OCCURRED (<10 MPH), IMPACT TO THE RIGHT FRONT TRIGGERING PASSENGER KNEE AIRBAG TO DEPLOY CAUSING SERIOUS LEG INJURIES TO PROPERLY BELTED 72 YEAR OLD FEMALE PASSENGER. THE FORCE OF THE AIRBAG BLEW THE SKIN AND TISSUE OFF THE PASSENGER'S LEGS RESULTING IN FLESH WOUNDS AND MOBILITY IMPAIRMENT. PASSENGER WOULD NOT HAVE OTHERWISE BEEN INJURED IN THE CRASH. BLACKBOX DATA WAS RETRIEVED AND VEHICLE INSPECTED BY EXPERTS, INCLUDING FORD. FORD CLAIMS THE AIRBAG OPERATED AS DESIGNED. FORD REFUSED TO PRODUCE ANY SAFETY TESTING RESULTS FOR THIS TYPE OF AIRBAG AND INJURY. INJURED PARTY REMAINS IN WOUND CARE (PIGSKIN HAS BEEN APPLIED) AND PHYSICAL THERAPY. SHE SUFFERS PERMANENT NERVE DAMAGE AND SCARRING.
OEM HANKOOK TIRES TIRES HAVE BEGUN DISINTEGRATING AROUND 20K MILES

THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO STEER THE VEHICLE TO A CIRCULAR RAMP OFF THE HIGHWAY AND PARKED THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT RESTARTED THE VEHICLE AN HOUR LATER AND THE POWER STEERING RETURNED TO NORMAL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER (VARSITY FORD, 3480 JACKSON RD, ANN ARBOR, MI 48106, (734) 996-2300) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE STEERING GEAR HAD AN INTERNAL FAILURE AND THE RACK AND PINION NEEDED REPLACEMENT. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 46,000.

ONE OUT OF THE CAR I'M FRESH AIR FOR SEVERAL HOURS, THE SYMPTOMS SLOWLY DISSIPATED. WISH I HAD HAD A CO METER IN THE CAR. I HAD MILDER SYMPTOMS ON SEVERAL TRIPS (4-7HRS DRIVING IN ONE DAY) IN THE WEEKS BEFORE THIS LONGER TRIP. THESE WERE ALL HIGHWAY DRIVING AND CAR DID NOT IDLE WHILE SITTING.

HE HOOKED MY TRUCK UP TO THE COMPUTER BUT COULD NOT GET ANY TYPE OF ERROR CODE TO COME BACK AND SUGGESTED I FOLLOW UP WITH FORD TO HAVE THEM LOOK AT IT BUT ALSO SUGGESTED THAT I CONTACT SOMEONE TO SEE IF THIS HAS SOME TYPE OF RECALL BECAUSE IN HIS WORDS "THIS IS GOING TO KILL SOMEONE". ORIGINAL HANKOOK FRONT TIRES WERE REPLACED AT ABOUT 10K MILES DUE TO PREMATURE WEAR AND CHUNK OF TIRES PEELING OFF. DEALER STATED THAT IT WAS DUE TO POOR ALIGNMENT. I PAID FOR 2 NEW TIRES. FORD EVENTUALLY REIMBURSED US FOR ONE OF THEM. NOW, 8K MILES LATER THE TIRES ARE JUST AS BAD AS THE ONES THAT WERE REPLACED. THE REAR ONES ARE ALMOST SMOOTH. HANKOOK IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM AND THEY HAVE INSTRUCTED THE DEALERS TO REPLACE THEM WITH A DIFFERENT MODEL YET MY DEALER WILL NOT DO IT.

GETTING READY FOR A ROAD TRIP AND DECIDED IT WAS TOO MUCH OF A SAFETY ISSUE TO IGNORE. FORD DEALER SAID THE PROBLEM WAS WITH THE POWER STEERING RACK AN PINION WITH A REPAIR COST OF $2100. IT HAS TO BE FIXED SO THE VEHICLE IS SAFE TO DRIVE ONCE AGAIN.

TOOK VEHICLE TO FORD DEALER WHERE PURCHASED AND WHO IS A HANKOOK DEALER. MY PRORATED COST FOR THE TIRE WAS $112.40 FOR MOUNT AND BALANCE. RETAIL COST OF TIRE WAS $214.00. TIRE STILL HAD 3/32 LEFT ON TREAD AND TIRE RATED FOR 50,000 MILES. REPLACEMENT TIRE HAS DOT 5MNC 1AH 5117 AND OLD TIRE WAS 5MNC 1AH 2715.
