TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1997 FORD F150. THE CONTACT STATED WAS DRIVING 25 MPH WHEN THE VEHICLE EXHIBITED AN UNUSUALLY LOUD NOSE. THE CONTACT THEN DISCOVERED THAT ONE OF THE FUEL TANK STRAPS WAS CORRODED AND SEPARATING FROM THE FUEL TANK. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND ADVISED THAT THE FAILURE WAS NOT RECALLED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 103,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1997 FORD F-150. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FUEL TANK FELL OFF OF THE VEHICLE AS A RESULT OF A BROKEN STRAP. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THE STRAP WAS CORRODED AND THAT NONE OF THE FUEL SPILLED ONTO THE GROUND. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 250,000.
I OWN A 1997 FORD F150 IN WHICH I NOTICED GAS LEAKING AS I WOULD FILL THE TANK. I FIRST NOTICED IT IN JULY AND IT PROGRESSIVELY GOT WORSE. I HEARD THAT FORD WAS SOON SENDING OUT A RECALL FOR REPLACING GAS TANK STRAPS ON VEHICLES SUCH AS MINE. SO I WAITED UNTIL A RECALL WAS SENT TO ME BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO ADDRESS A FIX ON THE LEAK. WHEN I TOOK MY F150 TO THE FORD SERVICE MECHANICS IN OCTOBER, I WAS INFORMED THAT IT WAS THE FILLER NECK FOR THE TANK THAT WAS CORRODED AND THAT THIS WAS NOT PART OF THE RECALL. THEY COULD REPLACE THE STRAPS, BUT ONE OF THE STRAPS WAS BY THE SKID PLATE AND IT WOULD DO NO GOOD TO REPLACE THAT ONE, AS THE SKID PLATE WAS HOLDING THE TANK, AND THE OTHER STRAP WAS NOT IN BAD CONDITION. I WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR THE REPLACEMENT OF THE FILLER TANK ON MY OWN WITHOUT COVERAGE FROM FORD. AND....BY THE WAY....THE FILLER NECK IS NO LONGER MANUFACTURED, SO THE FORD SERVICE GROUP WOULD HAVE TO ORDER ANOTHER COMPONENT AND DO SOME FABRICATION TO REPLACE MY FILLER NECK. I ASKED THE SERVICE TECH WHY MY GAS TANK WASN'T CORRODED, NOR WERE THE STRAPS VERY CORRODED, BUY MY FILLER NECK, WHICH WAS UP UNDER THE TRUCK BOX BODY WAS THE PART THAT WAS CORRODED AND LEAKING. THIS WAS CLEARLY A SAFETY HAZARD, BUT NOT COVERED AS A DEFECT BY FORD.THE TECH GAVE ME HIS OPINION THAT THERE WAS A DESIGN FLAW FOR MY PARTICULAR MODEL IN RELATION TO THE WHEEL WELL, SUCH THAT WHEN DRIVING THROUGH SNOW AND SALT, THE TIRES WOULD OVERSPRAY SNOW AND SALT UP UNDER THE WHEEL WELL AND ONTO HOLDING AREAS AROUND THE FILLER NECK, IN WHICH, AFTER TIME, SALT CORRODED THE METAL AND CAUSED THE CORROSION AND LEAKING. I BELIEVE THAT FORD IS AT FAULT FOR THIS DESIGN ISSUE AND HAD CREATED A SAFETY HAZARD AND SHOULD BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REPLACEMENT OF THE FILLER NECK. I WAS TOLD THAT I NEEDED TO FIX THE FILLER NECK, THAT I SHOULD FILE A COMPLAINT, AND THAT I SHOULD HOLD ONTO MY RECEIPTS. *TR
TRUCK HAD BEEN PARKED FOR SEVERAL MINUTES. WITH NO OTHER EXTERNAL FORCES OTHER THAN GRAVITY THE FUEL TANK STRAPS FAILED AND THE TANK FELL TO THE GROUND. NO DAMAGE OTHER THAN THE STRAPS NEED REPLACING. COULD HAVE BEEN DISASTROUS HAD IT HAPPENED ON THE HIGHWAY. UPDATED 08/11/11 *BF THE CONSUMER STATED THE TANK APPEARED TO BE IN GOOD CONDITION. I LAST DROVE MY TRUCK ON 06/20/2011. WHEN I WOKE UP TO FEED MY ANIMALS I HEARD A SOUND LIKE A BIRD CAUGHT UNDER MY TRUCK. I LOOKED UNDER THE DRIVERS SIDE FENDER AND SAW FLAMES. I POPPED THE HOOD AND SAW THE MASTER CYLINDER WAS ON FIRE. I GRABBED MY FIRE EXTINGUISHER FROM MY BARN AND PUT THE FIRE OUT.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1997 FORD F-150. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT A LOW SPEED, THE VEHICLE HIT A BUMP AND THE FUEL TANK FELL ONTO THE GROUND. THE CONTACT EXAMINED THE VEHICLE AND NOTICED THAT BOTH STRAPS WHICH HELD THE FUEL TANK IN PLACE WERE CORRODED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 176,000. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1997 FORD F-150. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FUEL TANK FRACTURED AND DETACHED FROM THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT FOUND THAT BOTH FUEL TANK STRAPS WERE SEVERELY RUSTED AND DETACHED. AS A RESULT, APPROXIMATELY TWO GALLONS OF GASOLINE WAS SPILLED. THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED BY AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO ADVISED THAT STRAPS, THE FUEL TANK AND THE NOZZLE WOULD NEED REPLACING. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED FOR THE NOZZLE ONLY. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 180,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE. UPDATED 09/07/2011 *LN *TR

THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN FOR ROUTINE MAINTENANCE WHEN THE TECHNICIAN ADVISED THAT ONE OF THE FUEL TANK STRAPS WAS FRACTURED AND THE OTHER SHOWED SIGNS OF SEVERE RUST AND COULD FRACTURE AT ANY GIVEN MOMENT. THE TECHNICIAN ADVISED THE CONTACT NOT TO FILL THE FUEL TANK TO CAPACITY AND ALSO ADVISED NOT TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 140, 000. THE STRAPS HOLDING THE FUEL TANK RUSTED AND SNAPPED CAUSING THE TANK TO DROP FROM THE VEHICLE. I WAS ONLY DOING ABOUT 25 MPH AT THE TIME SO THE TANK DID NOT RUPTURE. I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO A LOCAL FORD DEALER BECAUSE I SAW A NEWS REPORT ABOUT A RECALL OF THE STRAPS. TO MY SURPRISE THERE IS NO RECALL AND I MUST PAY OUT OF POCKET. THE STRAPS WERE RUSTY DUE TO THE AGE AND LOCATION, BUT THIS SHOULD NOT HAPPEN. *TR
WE WERE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AT ABOUT 25 MPH AFTER WE DECIDED NOT TO TAKE THE FREEWAY TO GET TO OUR DESTINATION. WE HEARD A HUGE CLUNK/DROP NOISE AND SEVERE SCRAPING SOUND SO WE PULLED OFF IMMEDIATELY TO FIND THAT THE GAS TANK IN OUR 1997 FORD F-150 HAD FALLEN AND WAS DRAGGING ON THE GROUND. THE STRAP(S) HAD APPARENTLY RUSTED OFF. THE TRUCK WAS TOWED TO A LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP WHERE THE WORK WILL BE DONE ON MONDAY. WE HOPE THAT ONLY THE STRAPS WILL HAVE TO BE REPLACED AND THAT NO DAMAGE TO THE FUEL TANK OR LINES WAS DONE (OR WILL BE DONE) DURING THE MOVING OF THE TRUCK DURING TOWING OR FOR REPAIR. I AM FEARFUL OF WHAT COULD HAVE HAPPENED HAD WE BEEN DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY AT 60-70 MPH AND SPARKS BEEN CREATED. THE GAS TANK WAS ABOUT 3/4 WAY FULL. *TR
FOUND THE REAR GAS TANK STRAP HANGING DOWN. IT HAD RUSTED THROUGH.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1997 FORD F150. THE CONTACT STATED THE FUEL TANK STRAPS WERE RUSTED AND CORRODED, CAUSING THE FRONT STRAP TO FRACTURE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A MECHANIC SHOP FOR REPAIRS WHERE IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE FRONT STRAPS WAS FRACTURED. THE MECHANIC STATED HE WOULD REPLACE BOTH STRAPS AT A COST TO THE CONTACT. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 240,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1997 FORD F-150. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FUEL STRAPS FRACTURED AND CAUSED THE FUEL TANK TO LEAK. THE CONTACT RECEIVED THE RECALL NOTICE ASSOCIATED WITH NHTSA RECALL CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 11V385000 (FUEL SYSTEM: GASOLINE STORAGE TANK: ASSEMBLY). THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR REPAIR. THE MANUFACTURER REFUSED TO REPLACE THE FUEL TANK BECAUSE IT WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 230,000. UPDATED 03/14/12*LJ THE CONSUMER STATED THE TANK FELL OFF IN JUNE AND HAS BEEN LEAKING EVER SINCE. THE STRAPS WERE REPLACED, BUT THE LEAK CONTINUED. UPDATED 03/19/12
I HAVE A 97 FORD F150. I NOTICED YESTERDAY WHEN I LOOKED UNDER MY TRUCK THE FUEL TANK STRAP WAS BUSTED, AND BOTH WERE SEVERELY CORRODED. *TR
ON MAY 31, 2011, I WAS DRIVING MY 1997 FORD F150 2-WHEEL DRIVE PICK-UP TRUCK AND I HEARD A LOUD NOISE BELOW ME FOLLOWED BY A SCRAPING SOUND. AS THERE WAS TRAFFIC AND ROAD CONSTRUCTION, I WAS UNABLE TO STOP FOR APPROXIMATELY 200 YARDS. WHEN I WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER, I SAW THAT THE GAS TANK HAD FALLEN COMPLETELY OFF THE VEHICLE. THE ONLY PART THAT WAS STILL ATTACHED TO THE TRUCK WAS THE FUEL LINE. THERE WAS A LARGE GASH IN THE GAS TANK. SINCE I HAD JUST FILLED THE TRUCK, OVER 23 GALLONS OF GAS WAS LEAKING ON THE STREET. THE LOCAL POLICE AND FIRE DEPARTMENTS WERE CALLED. THE STREET WAS TREATED WITH AN ABSORBENT. FORTUNATELY, THERE WAS NO FIRE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED AND REPAIRED. THE FOLLOWING PARTS HAD TO BE REPLACED: FLEX HOSE, VENT HOSE, FUEL VAPOR VALVE, FUEL TANK TRANSDUCER, GAS TANK STRAP KIT, FUEL TANK, FUEL PUMP AND THE LABOR TO INSTALL THESE PARTS. THE TOTAL FOR THE REPAIR WAS $1,362.93. IN ADDITION, THE TOWING CHARGE WAS $80.34 AND AT LEAST $110.00 OF GASOLINE WAS LOST. THIS VEHICLE DOES NOT HAVE ANY EXTRAORDINARY AMOUNT OF RUST NOR HAS IT SEEN EXTREME SERVICE. IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN GARAGED. I BELIEVE FORD MOTOR COMPANY SHOULD REIMBURSE ME FOR THESE EXPENSES BECAUSE, AS A CONSUMER, I SHOULD BE ABLE TO ASSUME THAT A GAS TANK WILL REMAIN ATTACHED FOR THE LIFETIME OF THE VEHICLE. *TR
WHILE DRIVING ON ROAD GAS TANK DROPPED FROM VEHICLE AND WAS DRAGGED ON ROAD CAUSING HOLE IN GAS TANK AND LEAKED ENTIRE GAS TANK ONTO ROADWAY. FUEL TANK STRAPS RUSTED OR BROKE ON MY 1997 FORD F150 PICKUP TANK FELL TO THE GROUND. *TR
WHILE DRIVING AT 65MPH, OUR FORD F150 TRUCK DROPPED ITS GAS TANK ON THE INTERSTATE. THE STRAPS HAD RUSTED THROUGH. THE DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE STRAPS. THE GAS TANK WAS HALF-FULL AND WE WERE ON A SMOOTH ROAD WHEN THE TANK DROPPED. WE PULLED OVER IMMEDIATELY SO THERE WAS NO FIRE, BUT THE TANK WAS DRAGGING ON THE GROUND AND WE HAD TO BE TOWED OFF THE HIGHWAY. *TR
WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 30 MILES PER HOUR UNDER NORMAL DRIVING CONDITIONS BOTH FUEL TANK SUPPORT STRAPS BROKE ON A 1997 FORD F150. THE RESULT OF THE STRAPS FAILING WAS A DAMAGED FUEL TANK (SEVERAL LEAKS OCCURRED ON THE TANK CAUSING MASSIVE FUEL LOSS), DAMAGED FUEL TANK SENSORS, DAMAGED FUEL TANK HOSES, AND DAMAGED FUEL TANK HOSE CLAMPS. THERE MAY HAVE ALSO BEEN ADDITIONAL DAMAGED CAUSED TO THE VEHICLES EXHAUST SYSTEM. THE COSTLY REPAIRS INCLUDED A NEW FUEL TANK, HOUSES, CLAMPS, SENSORS, AND REPLACING ABOUT 20 GALLONS OF FUEL. ALL REPAIRS WERE DONE AT THE OWNER'S EXPENSE. *TR

THE CONTACT WAS CONCERNED THAT THE FUEL TANK WOULD DETACH FROM THE VEHICLE AND POSSIBLY CAUSE A FIRE WHILE DRIVING. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 117,000. UPDATED 09/14/11 *BF THE STRAPS HAD COMPLETELY ROTTED AWAY FROM THE POINT IT STARTED TOUCHING THE GAS TANK ALL THE WAY AROUND UNTIL IT CLEARED THE GAS TANK ON THE OTHER SIDE. THE BREAK COULD HAVE HAPPENED ALL THE WAY AROUND AS THERE WAS NOTHING BUT ROTTED AWAY THIN RUST LEFT. THE STRAPS WERE BROKEN COMPLETELY AND THE GAS TANK WAS LAYING ON THE SKID PLATE. THE CONSUMER REPLACED THE STRAPS AT HIS EXPENSE. UPDATE 09/21/11
OUR MECHANIC NOTICED THAT ONE OF THE STRAPS AT THE REAR OF THE GAS TANK WAS MISSING, AND WHEN FILLING UP OUR 1997 FORD F150, THE TANK WAS GETTING CLOSE TO BEING FILLED, GAS STARTED SPEWING OUT OF THE FILL TUBE. WE LOOKED UNDER THE TRUCK AND NOTICED THAT THE FILL TUBE HAD SHIFTED DUE TO THE REAR STRAP BEING BROKEN. *TR

THE CONDITION OF THE STRAPS WERE UNKNOWN. THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN HOME AND PARKED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND A CLAIM WAS FILED. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THERE WERE NO RECALLS AND THE CONTACT WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REPAIR COST. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE PERFORMING ROUTINE MAINTENANCE ON THE VEHICLE, HE NOTICED THAT ONE OF THE STRAPS WHICH HELD THE FUEL TANK IN PLACE WAS FRACTURED AND THE SECOND STRAP WAS SEVERELY CORRODED. THE VEHICLE WAS IN THE PROCESS OF HAVING BOTH STRAPS REPLACED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 91,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1997 FORD F150. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING 25 MPH WHEN THE FUEL TANK STARTED DRAGGING ON THE GROUND DUE TO THE FUEL TANK STRAPS FRACTURING. 1997 FORD F-150 . THE GAS TANK STRAPS HAVE BEGUN TO ROT AND HAVE CHAFFED THE GAS TANK TO THE POINT THERE ARE SOME GAS VAPORS ESCAPING. NOT A FULL BLOWN LEAK AT THIS POINT. I WILL BEGIN THE PROCESS OF REPAIRING TO AVOID FIRE/EXPLOSION. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1997 FORD F-150. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE HE WAS DRIVING, ANOTHER VEHICLE CUT HIM OFF WHICH CAUSED HIM TO APPLY EXTREME PRESSURE TO THE BRAKES IN ORDER TO STOP THE VEHICLE. UPON DEPRESSING THE BRAKES, HE NOTICED THAT THE SEAT BELT LATCH WAS VERY LOOSE, AND CAUSED HIM TO LUNGE FORWARD INTO THE STEERING WHEEL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL MECHANIC WHO INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND FOUND ONE OF THE FUEL TANK STRAPS WAS CORRODED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND THE CURRENT MILES WERE 147,008. UPDATED 06/17/11 *BF THE MECHANIC STATED THE GAS TANK HAD RUSTED WHERE THE FUEL STRAPS BROKE. THE SPARE TIRE FELL OFF DUE TO CABLE FAILURE. ALSO THE HEAD GASKET HAD TO BE REPLACED DUE TO ANTI-FREEZE LEAKING INTO IT.

THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT HE WAS ABLE TO EXTINGUISH THE FIRE WITH A WATER HOSE. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS NOT CONTACTED AND NO INJURIES WERE REPORTED. PERIODIC INSPECTION OF THE TRUCK REVEALED THE ROTTED STRAPS HOLDING THE GAS TANK. CALLED THE LOCAL FORD DEALER TO SEE IF THEY WOULD FIX IT AND THEY SAID THEY WEREN'T AWARE OF THE PROBLEM OR ANY RECALL. WE THEN SCHEDULED AN APPOINTMENT TO HAVE IT FIXED AT A LOCAL AUTO BODY SHOP SINCE FORD WOULD NOT COOPERATE.

I WAS DRIVING MY 1997 FORD F-150 WHEN THE STRAPS FOR THE GAS TANK SUDDENLY BROKE AND GAS STARTED LEAKING. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE.
