WHILE VEHICLE WAS PARKED A FIRE STARTED UNDER THE HOOD. VEHICLE WAS TOTALED. DEALERSHIP WAS NOTIFIED, BUT DID NOT RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. *AK
2001 FORD F150 CREW CAB. 4.6 V8 HAS A LEAKY HEAD GASKET. FORD IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM BECAUSE THERE IS A SERVICE BULLITEN. ARTICAL NO.03-6-2 DATED 03/31/03. I FEEL IF THERE ARE MANY LIKE THIS WHY IS THERE NOT A RECALL. *AK
THIS IS A 2001 FORD SVT LIGHTNING THAT HAS BEEN A VICTIM OF A BLOWN SPARK PLUG. THIS IS A COMMON FAILURE IN THESE TRITON MOTORS. IN THE NEW GROUPS, IT IS SPECULATED THAT THIS OCCURS FOR TWO REASONS. 1) A DESIGN ERROR IN THE CYLINDER HEAD. IN THE PRE-2003 5.4 MOD MOTOR HEADS, THERE ARE A TOTAL OF 4 THREADS. FORD HAS REALIZED THIS PROBLEM AND CORRECTED THE 2003-LATER HEADS WITH 8 THREADS TO HOLD THE SPARK PLUG IN. THIS PROBLEM EFFECTED ALL TRITON 5.4 MOTORS AND THE PROBLEM HAS SHOWN UP IN 5.4 LITER MOTORS IN OTHER NON-LIGHTNING TRUCKS AND EXPEDITIONS. 2) THERE HAVE BEEN MANY INSTANCES WHERE FORD CUSTOMERS HAVE FOUND THAT THE SPARK PLUGS HAVE BEEN VERY LOOSE IN THESE TRITON HEADS. THIS IS NOT KNOWN WHETHER THIS IS FROM A LACK OF THREADS OR BEING LOOSE FROM THE FACTORY. EITHER WAY, IN THIS DAY AND AGE IN AUTOMOTIVE TECHNOLOGY, THE REQUIREMENT THAT A CUSTOMER HAS TO CHECK THE TORQUE ON SPARK PLUGS IS UNREALISTIC. OTHER FACTORS TO CONSIDER: MY LIGHTNING IS A 2001 MODEL WITH 15,000 MILES ON IT. OBVIOUSLY IT IS INFREQUENTLY USED. THERE IS A PERFORMANCE CHIP THAT DOES NOT ADD BOOST. IN ESSENCE, THIS TRUCK IS PAMPERED. THE HEAD FAILURE OCCURRED DURING NORMAL DRIVING ON A SLIGHT INCLINE GO THE SPEED OF TRAFFIC. APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH. THERE IS NO DETONATION ISSUES WITH THIS VEHICLE. PRIOR TO THIS FAILURE THE POWER TRAIN HAD NO CHRONIC ISSUES SUCH HAS UNKNOWN SUPERCHARGER NOISES, ENGINE TICKS/KNOCKS, IGNITION, FUEL ISSUES OR SMOKY EXHAUST. FORD WILL NOT COVER THIS DAMAGE AND FAILURE EVEN THOUGHT THIS HAPPENS FREQUENTLY IN F-150 FORD TRUCKS RUNNING THIS ENGINE. *NM
FACTORY SPARK PLUG THREADS ARE TOO SHORT FOR CYLINDER HEADS, RESULTING IN THE PLUGS BLOWING OUT.*AK
2001 FORD F150 CAUGHT ON FIRE WHILE PARKED. *MR THE CRUISE CONTROL WENT OUT. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TOTALED BUT THERE WAS EXTREME DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE. THE CONSUMER RECEIVED A RECALL LETTER IN FEBRUARY 2005. RECALL NUMBER 05V017000. (SPEED CONTROL DEACTIVATION SWITCH) *SC *JB
WHILE APPLYING THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL IT STUCK. THIS CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO ACCELERATE UNCONTROLLABLY. VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION, AND MECHANIC DETERMINED THAT THE THROTTLE BODY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. *AK
DT: THE CRUISE CONTROL QUIT WORKING 6 MONTHS AGO. TOOK VEHICLE TO A LOCAL FORD DEALER, WHO NEVER INSPECTED THE TRUCK, BUT SAID IT WAS PROBABLY A MODULE AND NOT WHAT WAS LISTED AS THE COMPONENT ON NHTSA CAMP ID RECALL 05V017000. THERE WAS A CURRENT RECALL INVOLVING THE CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH BUT THIS APPLIED TO EARLIER BUILD MODELS NOT THE CONSUMER'S VEHICLE. NO REPAIRS WERE MADE. CONTACTED FORD DIRECTLY AND FILED A COMPLAINT AFTER TAKING TO A AN INDEPENDENT SERVICE SHOP. THE MECHANIC NOTED THIS INVOLVED A POTENTIAL FIRE HAZARD ON THE CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH. NO REPAIRS WERE MADE AT THIS SERVICE SHOP AS WELL. NO ALTERATIONS OR CORRECTIONS HAVE BEEN MADE TO THE CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH. *AK *JB

WHILE ATTEMPTING TO TURN INTO THE DRIVEWAY STEERING COLUMN LOCKED AS A RESULT, VEHICLE WAS UNABLE TO TURN IN EITHER DIRECTION. *AK
SPARK PLUG BLEW OUT OF THE HEAD ON THE ENGINE. *JB
VEHICLE WAS PARKED WHEN CONSUMER TOLD THE PASSENGER THAT A BURNING SMELL WAS COMING FROM THE VEHICLE. WHEN CONSUMER AND PASSENGER WERE RESPONDING TO THE SMELL THERE WAS FIRE COMING FROM UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE. CONSUMER CALLED THE FIRE DEPARTMENT THAT RESPONDED IMMEDIATELY. VEHICLE BURNED COMPLETELY BEYOND RECOGNITION. *AK *TT
THE CONSUMER PARKED THE VEHICLE IN THE DRIVEWAY AND HEARD THE HORN HONKING, WHEN THE OWNER WENT TO SEE WHAT WAS HAPPENING, THE ENTIRE VEHICLE HAD GONE UP IN FLAMES. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS NOTIFIED AND THE FIRE CHIEF SAID THE FIRE STARTED UNDER THE HOOD AND THAT IT WAS A MECHANICAL DEFECT WHICH IGNITED THE FLAMES. PROVIDE FURTHER DETAILS. *JB
TIE RODS ARE DEFECTIVE. TRUCK SHAKES VIOLENTLY AND DOES NOT STEER STRAIGHT. THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN DIAGNOSED AS DEFECTIVE TIE RODS, BUT FORD WILL NOT REPLACE AT THEIR EXPENSE SINCE THE VEHICLE MFG WARRANTY HAS EXPIRED. *AK
MY 2001 FORD SVT F-150 LIGHTNING BLEW A SPARK PLUG OUT OF THE CYLINDER HEAD OF THE ENGINE. THERE WAS NO PRIOR WARNING TO THIS HAPPENING. WHEN THIS HAPPENED THE VEHICLE WAS UNDRIVABLE AND I WAS FORCED TO HAVE IT TOWED. FORD TOWING WAS UNABLE TO GET THE VEHICLE UNTIL THE FOLLOWING DAY SO I WAS FORCED TO PAY FOR THE TOW OUT OF MY POCKET. THE FIRST DEALERSHIP I WENT TO SAID THEY WOULDN'T FIX THE TRUCK UNDER WARRANTY. THE SECOND DEALERSHIP THAT IT WENT TO WAS ABLE TO COVER THE REPAIR UNDER WARRANTY. THIS ENTIRE INCIDENT HAPPENED WHY I WAS ON VACATION. I AM A SOLDIER RETURNING FROM IRAQ AND I WAS FORCED TO SPEND A WEEK IN A HOTEL ROOM WHY THEY WAITED ON PARTS TO FIX MY VEHICLE. AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS FIXED I WAS SENT ON MY WAY AND TWO HOURS LATER THE VEHICLE HAD MORE PROBLEMS. SEVERAL OTHER SMALL COMPONENTS WERE ALSO DAMAGED AND I WAS FORCED TO STOP AGAIN. THIS WAS ALSO COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. I THOUGHT THAT THIS WAS UNHEARD OF, BUT AS IT TURNS OUT IS VERY COMMON TO THE FORD TRITON V-8 ENGINES. I AM ONE OF THOUSANDS THAT THIS HAS HAPPENED TO AND I FEEL FORTUNATE THAT I WASN'T LEFT STRANDED IN AN UNSAFE AREA.
WHILE DRIVING TRANSMISSION DISENGAGED AND EXPLODED INTERNALLY. THIS CAUSED DAMAGE TO THE THIRD/FOURTH, AND REVERSE GEARS. VEHICLE DECELERATED, IT WOULD NOT GO OVER 40 MPH. CONSUMER CONTACTED THE MANUFACTURER, WHO SAID THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO. *AK
FRONT TIRES STARTED SHOWING EXTENSIVE WEAR AND A CLUNCK NOISE WHEN TURNING/ ACCELERATING AT 40,000 MILES. TOOK TO LOCAL TIRE STORE AND THEY SHOWED ME THAT BOTH LOWER BALL JOINTS AND THE IDLE-ARM ARE BAD AND MUST BE REPLACED. I WILL BE HAVING THEM REPLACED NEXT WEEK AND GETTING NEW TIRES AS WELL! PARTS WILL BE AVAILABLE!*AK
WHILE PARKED THE VEHICLE CAUGHT ON FIRE WITHOUT WARNING. THE CAUSE HAS YET TO BE DETERMINED. THE VEHICLE WAS CONSIDERED A TOTAL LOSS. *AK
AFTER SITTING UNUSED FOR SIX HOURS IN A LOCKED GARAGE, MY 2001 FORD F-150 BURST INTO FLAMES. THE FIRE INSPECTOR DETERMINED THE FIRE STARTED IN THE AREA WHERE WIRES CONNECT TO THE BRAKE MASTER CYLANDER. MY INSURANCE CO. (ST. FARM) PAID APXIMATELY $6,000 FOR REPAIRS. LUCKILY, I WAS ABLE TO PUT THE FIRE OUT QUICKLY. MY WIFE AND KIDS WERE ASLEEP IN BED. FIRE OCCURRED APXIMATELY 10:30 PM, TRUCK HAD BEEN PARKED SINCE 4:30PM.*AK
I HAVE A 2001, FORD F-150, 2 X 4, 4.6L V-8, 64K MILES. NSTALLED NEW TIRES ON VEHICLE. WAS INFORMED THAT WHEEL ALIGNEMENT COULD NOT BE GUARANTEED DUE TO BAD LOWER DRIVER SIDE BALL JOINT. TOOK VEHICLE TO FORD DEALER FOR SECOND 'EXPERT OPINION" WAS ADVISED BOTH LOWER BALL JOINTS NEED REPLACEMENT. THIS TRUCK HAS ALL HIGHWAY MILES, NO OFF ROAD OR CONSTRUCTION TYPE HEAVY LOAD USE. ALL JOINT FAILURE SHOULD NOT OCCUR AT THIS MILEAGE WITH THIS TYPE OF USE. MY OPINION INFERIOR DESIGN, WORKMANSHIP, OR PROCUREMENT PRACTICE BY FORD. SEEMS TO BE COMMON THREAD OCCURENCE FROM MY RESEARCH.*AK
A TIE ROD FAILURE. CONSUMER WAS HAVING VEHICLE SERVICED FOR OTHER ISSUES WHEN IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE TIE RODS WERE DEFECTIVE. CONSUMER CONTACTED THE MANUFACTURER, WHO WAS NOT WILLING TO DO ANYTHING TO ASSIST HIM WITH THIS DEFECT. *AK A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT HAS BEEN FILED AGAINST THE MANUFACTURER. *NM

MY IGNITION ON MY 2001 FORD FOCUD ZX3 ALSO HAS LOCKED UP AS SO MANY OTHERS. IT HAS DONE THIS MANY TIMES BEFORE AND THIS SATURDAY IT HAS FINALLY GAVE UP, LEAVING ME AND MY GIRL FRIEND STRANDED 25 MILES FROM HOME. I TRIED JIGGLING THE STEERING WHEEL AND KEYS AND SPEND ABOUT 3 HOURS TRYING TO GET THE IGNITION UNLOCKED. THIS IS DEFINENTLY A DESIGN FLAW AND FORD NEEDS TO ADDRESS IT. I WILL DEFINENTLY NOT BE BUYING A FORD AGAIN IF THIS IS HOW THEY TREAT THEIR CUSTOMERS AND DESIGN THEIR SHODDY CARS.*AK
FORD MOTOR CO. SENT OUT A PROCEDURE ON HOW TO INSPECT TIE-RODS ON FORD TRUCKS. FTER INSPECTING MINE, THEY NEED TO BE REPLACED.... THERE ARE LOTS OF FORD OWNERS WHO ARE HAVING PREMATURE TIE-ROD FALURES AND HAVE TO REPLACE THEM.... I FEEL IT'S A SERIOUS SAFTY ISSUE... FORD SHOULD ISSUE A RECALL. *AK
2ND SPARK PLUG FROM THE FRONT ON PASSENGER SIDE BLEW OUT OF THE CYLINDER HEAD ON 20001 FORD F-150 LIGHTNING WHILE STOPPED IN TRAFFIC. TRUCK HAS 39550 MILES ON IT. PLUG STRIPPED THREADS OUT OF CYLINDER HEAD. THIS IS 2ND OCCURRENCE. ON JUNE 19 2003 PLUG WAS EJECTED FROM #2 CYLINDER HEAD. TRUCK WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY AND HEAD WAS REPLACED BY FOX LAKE FORD MERCURY. DEALERSHIP DID NOT SAY WHICH PLUG BLEW. A COIL ASSEMBLY ALSO BLEW AND WAS REPLACED BY SESSLER FORD ON JANUARY 7TH 2004. *AK

WHILE DRIVING, THE ABS LIGHT APPEARED ON THE DASHBOARD AND REMAINED ON. THE DRIVER APPLIED THE BRAKES AND THE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. THE DRIVER WAS ABLE TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE CONSUMER DROVE IT TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION. THE MECHANIC INFORMED THE CONSUMER THAT THE PROBLEM COULD NOT BE DUPLICATED. PLEASE FILL IN ADDITIONAL INFORMATION. *JB
JIM LEFT ME A MESSAGE ON 12/7/04 ABOUT A FORD FIRE. TRUCK WAS SITTING FOR 6 HOURS AND CAUGHT ON FIRE IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. THE FIRE OCCURRED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT. MY WIFE SAID SHE HAD HEARD A THUD. WHEN THEY FOUND THE TRUCK IT WAS FULLY INVOLVED. NO PROBLEMS WITH TRUCK. NO AFTER MARKET EQUIPMENT. VEHICLE HAD CRUISE CONTROL. NEVER USED IT, DID NOT KNOW IF IT WORKED. USED A YEAR BEFORE FIRE. VEHICLE FOR LOCAL TRIPS ONLY. VEHICLE WAS INSURED. INSURANCE COMPANY DID A FIRE INSPECTION. THIS FIRE INVOLVED A STRUCTURE FIRE.*AK
WHILE DRIVING HOME FROM WORK TODAY, APPROACHING THE ON-RAMP TO THE 280 ON SAND HILL ROAD IN MENLO PARK, CA. THE 2001 F-150 5.4L PICK-UP WITH 75,000 MILES, STARTED MAKING A LOUD POPPING SOUND WHILE DRIVING ABOUT 35 MPH. I PULLED THE TRUCK OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD IMMEDIATELY AND TURNED THE ENGINE OFF. THE CAR WAS TOWED BY FLATBED TO THE LOCAL SHELL GAS STATION REPAIR SHOP TO BE SEEN BY THE MECHANIC IN THE MORNING. THE MECHANIC INDICATED THAT THE #3 PLUG ON THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE CAR HAD COME OUT OF THE HEAD, THE THREADS TO THE SPARK PLUG STRIPPED. HE WAS UNABLE TO GET A NEW PLUG INTO THE HEAD AND WANTED MY APPROVAL TO SPEND ABOUT 5 HOURS OR $750 TO REMOVE THE HEAD AND INSPECT THE CYLINDER HEAD FOR A POSSIBLE STRIPPED SOCKET. THE FORD DEALERSHIP SEPARATELY QUOTED ME $1,010 FOR A NEW CYLINDER HEAD AND THE FORD SERVICE ADVISER AT THE PALO ALTO FORD DEALERSHIP QUOTED MY AN ESTIMATED 12 HOURS TO TEAR DOWN AND REMOVE THE HEAD FOR INSPECTION. THE HOURLY RATE QUOTED IS $105. I CHECKED WITH ANOTHER LOCAL AUTO REPAIR SHOP, WHERE THE MECHANIC TOLD ME THAT THE BLOWN PLUG AND STRIPPED HEAD WAS A COMMON PROBLEM. HE AGREED THAT THE FIVE HOUR ESTIMATE TO REMOVE THE HEAD SOUNDED RIGHT (WHY IS FORD QUOTING ME 12 HOURS?). *NM
WHILE PARKED THE CONSUMER'S 2001 FORD 150 SUPERCREW CAUGHT ON FIRE. THE CONSUMER ASKED THE DEALER WHAT THE CAUSE WAS AND HE WAS TOLD IT WAS THE BRAKE DEACTIVATION SWITCH FOR THE CRUISE CONTROL. *NM *NM
TRUCK WAS PARKED FOR APPROX 2 HOURS WHEN IT CAUGHT FIRE AND TOTALLY BURNED.
WHILE DRIVING SEAT BELT BUCKLE DISCONNECTED CONTINUOUSLY RECALL 01V227001 WAS ISSUED FOR THE TRW SEAT BELT BUCKLES. CONSUMER CONTACTED THE DEALER, WHO TOLD CONSUMER THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO. HOWEVER, PROBLEM STILL EXISTED. *AK

I RECENTLY BOUGHT A 2001 FORD F150 SUPER CAB TRUCK,AND I SAW THAT IT DOESN'T HAVE ANY HEAD RETRAINTS IN THE BACK SEATS,AND ALSO FOUND OUT THAT THERE HAVE BEEN ABOUT FOUR COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS MATTER AND NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE ABOUT IT,ALSO HAD MY TRUCK IN THE DEALER SHOP FOR FOUR DAYS FOR A WATER LEAK,AND WAS GIVEN TO ME,PAID BY THE DEALER A FORD F150 SUPER CAB 2005 RENTAL,UNTIL MY TRUCK WAS FIXED,AND I SAW THAT THIS TRUCK DID HAVE THE BACK SEATS RESTRAINTS,SO I BELIEVE THIS IS A VERY UNSAFE,NOT TO HAVE THESE RESTRAINTS ON THESE OTHER YEAR TRUCKS.I HOPE THAT SOMETHING CAN BE RESOLVE ON THIS PROBLEM,BECAUSE I HAVE GRANDKIDS,AND IT COULD BE VERY UNSAFE.AND THIS MY FIRST TIME BUYING A FORD.PLEASE REPLY TO ME SOON.THANK YOU VERY MUCH. *AK

THE CONSUMER PARKED THE VEHICLE AT 6:00 PM AND ABOUT 10 MINUTES LATER THE TRUCK CAUGHT ON FIRE. THE FIRE WAS COMING FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT ON THE DRIVERS SIDE. THE VEHICLE HAD CRUISE CONTROL. THE CRUISE CONTROL WAS ONLY USED ONE TIME BEFORE THE FIRE LIKE 6 OR 7 MONTHS AGO. WILL E-MAIL PICTURES TO BRUCE YORK. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INSURED. *AK ANOTHER VEHICLE WAS PARKED BESIDE IT AND CAUGHT FIRE. *SC *JB
CONSUMER HAD TO REPLACE BALL JOINTS AFTER ONLY 70,000 MILES. *AK
WHILE BACKING OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY THE TIE ROD ENDS SEPARATED WITHOUT WARNING. AS A RESULT THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE TIRE WAS PUNCTURED. THE CAUSE HAS YET TO BE DETERMINED. PLEASE PROVIDE ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.

THE CONSUMER WAS MADE TO PAY FOR THE SERVICE RENDERED ON THE WIPER MOTOR. TWO YEARS LATER THE WIPER MOTOR CAUGHT FIRE AND DID CONSIDERABLE DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE. *TC
