Two separate times, driving at highway speed, the truck shifted into first gear and I had to pull over. A wrench symbol also popped up where the speed is usually displayed.
NHTSA Investigation PE24010 (or related transmission downshift probes.. Safety Risk: the vehicle unexpectedly downshifts and locks rear wheels, creating an immediate life-threatening risk on the highway. Dealer Response: dealer claimed their "computer doesn't pick up anything," as this helps investigators understand that the diagnostic tools are failing to detect the fault. VIN Number: [XXX] Dealer Record: that Grieco Ford performed the recall update and that the issue persists. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Vehicle Information: 2014 Ford F-150 VIN [XXX] Transmission: 6R80 Description of the problem: My 2014 Ford F-150 has a dangerous transmission issue. It suddenly downshifts from higher gears (like 4th or 5th) into 1st gear while driving, without warning. This creates a serious risk of loss of control or rear-end collision. Ford performed the recall for the 6R80 PCM reprogramming, but the issue persists. The problem was not resolved, and the vehicle still downshifts abruptly. My vehicle has over 200,000 miles, so the extended warranty for the lead frame (program 19N01) no longer applies, but this is a serious safety defect that continues after the recall. I’m requesting that the NHTSA investigate this issue, as it seems the recall fix is not effective in all cases. Many other owners report similar symptoms even after the recall. Safety concern: I feel unsafe driving this vehicle. The transmission can cause a sudden deceleration in traffic, and I fear it may lead to an accident. On [XXX], about 20 minutes into my 30-minute commute, while driving at highway speed, my trucks transmission suddenly downshifted dramatically, jerking and throwing me forward in my seat and causing the truck to slow down so abruptly that I was almost rear ended, putting drivers around and behind me at risk of high-speed collisions. Less than 5 minutes later it happened a second time. This is the exact same abrupt transmission downshift issue that happened to me in this vehicle a few times before in early 2024. I received a Safety Recall notice on this known issue about a week after the first incident in 2024. I took my vehicle into the AutoNation Ford Dealer in Littleton, Colorado immediately after I received that notice and they supposedly 'fixed' the issue under the recall 24S37. Obviously, the issue has not been resolved. I am asking for a deeper look into the safety issue as I am sure I am not the only one this is happening to. I am also concerned that there were no warning lamps or messages that would indicate a problem that needed to be addressed! The truck is currently back at the AutoNation Ford Dealer in Littleton and is available for inspection. They are telling me there is no current recall for this issue. How can that be true if it’s the exact same problem and their Safety Recall ‘repair’ didn’t work? I believe the repair was just a software patch, but I can’t be sure. Can you please help me find out what the recall (24S37) was supposed to fix and why it didn’t fix the problem? Their suggestion now is to replace the Valve Body with a cost of $2,554.63 (in addition to a $219.95 diagnostic fee). My concern is that even this expensive repair might not actually solve the problem, and I am truly afraid to drive this vehicle. Ford Motor Company issued a recall for my truck (the transmission could suddenly shift into neutral), stating that they needed to update the PCM, and my local dealership service center said they could send an employee out to fix it remotely. I had not experienced the shifting into neutral prior to the "fix". Less than a week later, as I was driving around 35mph, the speedometer dropped to 0 and the transmission stuck in 3rd gear. I waited until the next stop sign and turned off the engine and started it again and it went back to normal. The next day the same issue occurred. The speedometer would drop to 0 and the transmission would stick in whichever gear it was last in. This time is was 5th gear on a highway. I had to pull over and restart it 3 times before it resumed normal driving. I went back to the dealership and they said the electronic update wouldn't have caused the OSS to malfunction and that it was a coincidence that the exact issue I was having was the same as the cause and reason for the recall. I went to an independent Transmission mechanic to have the OSS replaced and it has now been over a month and the problem has not returned. I don't know if the cause of the OSS malfunctioning was a coincidence or if it was related to a faulty electronic update (like if the Ford mechanic didn't disconnect the battery or overloaded an electric charge when he updated the PCM). The warning sign of a wrench did appear each time the OSS would drop to 0. The check engine light went on the first time but not after that.
We took our truck to the local Ford dealership in regards to recall 24S37. There were no issues with the truck before we took it in. They say it was repaired on 1/7. A couple of weeks later the truck gets stuck in 1st gear and the now and at the same time the speedometer shuts down. We have read that if the program update doesn't fix it then they need to replace the leadframe but now they are saying that will be $2000 for them to fix the issue.
Sanderson Ford in Glendale has no ETA for the defect leadframe in my car. Right now I cant drive my car anymore because the check engine light came on with P0720 - speed sensor error code. When I entered the highway, my truck suddenly shifted from 3rd to 5th so I could not accelerate in a very busy intersection. This because the speed sensor failed. Sanderson Ford does not offer service soon because they dont have an eta for the leadframe. or a loaner vehicle until it can be fixed. What do I do now?
My 2014 F150 was recalled for a software patch pertaining to the lead frame in the transmission because the vehicle would abruptly downshift at any speed. After having the recall performed by a dealership, it continued to have the same issue. I was told by the Service Manager the lead frame was bad but the recall did not cover the repair. For my safety I had the repair done and it cost me $1869.64. I contacted NHTSA and was told the dealership would have to contact Ford Motor Company for a warranty code to cover the cost of the repair. Ford Motor Company said the dealership should pay for the repair up front then get reimbursed by Ford Motor Company. The dealership said only NGTSA can include the lead frame in the recall so I was responsible for the cost of the repair. As of this date (1/7/2025), I'm still out $1859.64. I have the lead frame that was removed from the truck and there are no obvious defects (cracks, buildups, etc) so the issue has to be with the control mechanism within the lead frame that the software patch should have corrected. Why has the recall not been upgraded to include replacing the lead frame?
TRANSMISSION.SLIPPING .WILL NOT DRIVE ANYMORE CONCERNED AND DANGEROUS .IT HAPPENS WHEN NOT EXSPECTING DROP GEAR AND JUMP BACK .
I was driving about 45 miles an hour and my car suddenly ramps up in rpms. Might’ve been a sudden down shift
This truck is shutting off, especially when I reach a stop and sometimes become hard to start. I take it three times for recall and they refuse to fix the problem. They also charge me and I am at wrist with this vehicle I did because accidental or death and damage properties. I need an immediate solution because it did last had running me around telling me lies. I cannot drive my vehicle and I cannot pass inspection because of this situation. Let me know what I need to do from here .thank you
About 3 weeks ago, I started having issues with the truck where the tachometer would jump to redline at the same time the speedometer would drop to 0 driving at 30-40 MPH. The rear wheels locked up twice. This has happened 3 more times since it started 3 weeks ago. The code that came up on the truck was P0720, which is the output speed sensor. Ford issued a recall on 2011-2013 year models for the exact same issue. Mine is a 2014 model with the same exact transmission (6R80) having the exact same problem as the recall models. Luckily the issue hasn't caused an accident for me. That of course can change if it happens again before I am able to get it repaired. Today when it happened I was on the highway driving 65-70 MPH fortunately the rear wheels did not lock up. A wrench symbol appears on the odometer which is "LIMP MODE" and began decelerating on a highway with moderate traffic that could've caused an accident because I couldn't accelerate. I have 30 plus years of driving experience. This situation is very dangerous especially for inexperienced drivers even worse with drivers being distracted with their phones these days.
The truck will jump from sixth gear to first gear, or will go from first gear straight to fifth and be stuck in fifth , or be stuck in first, the truck will randomly take off on its own or come to a screeching stop on highways going 60 mph, the gear indicator will stop working, alongside all other gauges on the dash, such as gas mileage, RPM, speedometer, heat and oil gauge will all stop working, when the vehicle is pulled over and shut off, it will start normal and run normal for a short amount of time.
I was driving 70mph in the middle lane on the highway and all of a sudden it down shifted resulting in my rear end locking up. I had my three children in the vehicle and the truck gave me no warning signs. I was fishtailing and was extremely lucky we didn’t crash and I was able to gain control of the vehicle again. I took it to the mechanics shop and they told me it was the p0720 output speed censor circuit malfunction and this was causing misfires in my engine as well in cylinder 7 because of the problem in my transmission. I haven’t drove the truck since because I can’t afford to fix a transmission and engine.
The truck alames into 1st gear while driving sticks in 3rd gear as well as 5th gear no miles are being registered Speedometer not working, not registering accurate speed or mileage engine and transmission stop communicating.
I was travelling down the highway at near 60 mph and without warning the truck shuttered and shifted to first gear. This nearly started and chain reaction crash with myself and 3 other vehicles as I was nearly rear ended, I also could've easily lost control. Had I been towing my travel trailer at the time this would have caused a major accident without question. 2 codes were thrown at this time P0720 and P0722, this comes back to a Lead Frame issue with the transmission. I took the truck to my local dealer and they stated they couldn't get the issue to happen again and that there was nothing wrong as they could tell because the codes do not store. The only symptom prior to was all the went blank just before the truck shuttered and went to first gear.
While driving a freeway speed (80 MPH) my vehicle suddenly down shifted without cause. The vehicle had shifted from 6th gear down to 3rd gear while driving at 80 MPH nearly causing an accident. This similar random downshifting occurred several more times before I was able to take my vehicle to my local Ford dealership. The Ford technician diagnosed the issue from the computer logs as a code P0722, Output Speed shaft Sensor fault. The part which failed is on national back order due to the part being on a safety recall for some vehicles. My vehicle is not part of the current safety recall. The Ford dealer will not allow me to drive my vehicle until they have the part to repair it. They said it is not safe to drive with the failing sensor.
My truck appeared to down shift into first gear while driving 50 mph. The RPMs soared and i temporarily lost control of the vehicle and my body slammed forward. Luckily, no other vehicle was adjacent to mine otherwise people could have been severely injured. The event occurred again 5 minutes later. Initial symptoms were an instance where there was no dashboard feedback from my rpm, speedometer and information area. Recall appears to only apply to 2011-2013 model vehicles. Mine is a 2014 however it was manufactured in dearborne in 2013 and the recall applies to f150s manufactured there through October of 2013. Subject part not available and cannot get repaired through the dealer for multiple weeks Failure code of speed sensor in the lead frame was identified by an independent service center
Vehicle down shifted from 6th gear to 1st gear, while going 70. Rear tires locked up and slide. Vehicle repeat the issue after a brief stop on the side of road to check for broken parts and determining there was nothing visually broken and no warning lights, error codes, or weird sounds when cranked. Pulled vehicle over and called for a trailer. Trailered vehicle to residence. Found where Ford has a recall for similar event in the 2011-13 models related to OSS and PCM.
I was driving along and I get a wrench that pops up on my screen saying there's something going on and then I lose all power to my foot pedal and have to pull over immediately as I'm have absolutely no power and I have to get over to the right I later find out it's the throttle body sensor or that's what I've read and it's a major issue safety concern
