TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 FORD FIVE HUNDRED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE HAVING THE VEHICLE SERVICED BY AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR ROUTINE MAINTENANCE, HE WAS INFORMED THAT THE UPPER MOTOR MOUNTS WERE CRACKED. AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WAS NOTIFIED AND THE CONTACT WAS AWAITING A RESPONSE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS THEN NOTIFIED, BUT OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 82,000.
ENGINE SURGES WHEN PARKING,WHEN BACKING SLOWLY WITH FOOT ON BRAKE PEDAL. *TT
05 FORD FIVE HUNDRED, AWD MALFUNCTION LIGHTS STAYED ON, SPEED FLUCTUATION UPWARD RAPIDLY WHEN TAKE OFF CAUSING VERY UNSAFE DRIVING. *TR
VEHICLE WILL INTERMITTENTLY STALL WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A STOP. THE VEHICLE HAS STALLED NUMEROUS TIMES IN THE MIDDLE OF EXECUTING A TURN, LEAVING THE VEHICLE AND OCCUPANTS IN A DANGEROUS SITUATION. A FORD DEALERSHIP DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS BEING THE THROTTLE BODY, HOWEVER, AFTER REPLACING THE VERY EXPENSIVE THROTTLE BODY, THE PROBLEM PERSISTS. A NON-FORD MECHANIC IS NOW SAYING IT IS MORE LIKELY LOOSE WIRING AND IS WORKING TO DIAGNOSE THE EXACT WIRING ISSUE CAUSING THE PROBLEM. THERE SEEM TO BE MANY PEOPLE ONLINE WITH THE SAME STALLING ISSUE. IN ADDITION TO THE STALLING, THE VEHICLE HAS ALSO BEEN SURGING SPORADICALLY. IT SURGES FORWARD (OR BACKWARD) WITHOUT THE ACCELERATOR BEING PRESSED. IT APPEARS THAT MY VEHICLE IS NOT THE ONLY ONE AFFECTED BY THIS PROBLEM. FORD NEEDS TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THE PRECARIOUS POSITION THEY ARE PUTTING VEHICLE OWNERS IN.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 FORD FIVE HUNDRED. WHILE ATTEMPTING TO PARK, THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE SURGED FORWARD. THE FAILURE RECURRED WHEN THE AIR CONDITIONER WAS ACTIVATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTICS WHERE THE TECHNICIAN ADVISED THAT THE THROTTLE BODY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 94,400. A/C COMPRESSOR PROBLEM. AFTER READING NUMEROUS BLOGS, SEEMS TO BE A VERY COMMON PROBLEM FOR THE FORD FIVE HUNDRED MODELS. FORD NEEDS TO RECALL AND FIX. *TR
THE CAR ENTERED ENGINE "FAILSAFE MODE" AND SHUT DOWN WHILE TRYING TO MERGE INTO TRAFFIC ON A BUSY RUSH-HOUR HIGHWAY. AFTER PULLING OVER AND RESTARTING THE ENGINE, OPERATION WAS NORMAL. THIS WAS THE 3RD TIME IN A 2.5 WEEK PERIOD THIS OCCURRED. THE CAR EXPERIENCED THE SAME ISSUES IN JULY 2010 FREQUENTLY (IT HAD EXISTED FOR 2-3 YEAR ON AND OFF BEFORE THEN). FORD APPLIED THE SERVICE ALERT FIX BY REPLACING THE THROTTLE BODY AND REFRESHING THE PCM. THIS FIX HAS NOT WORKED. THE CAR WILL SPORADICALLY ENTER FAILSAFE MODE ON WARM DAYS WHEN TRYING TO ACCELERATE/SHIFT GEARS. THE ORIGINAL FIX IN JULY 2010 WAS COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. IN OCTOBER 2010 THERE WAS A TRANSMISSION CONTROL FAILURE AND THE COMPUTER HAD TO BE REPLACED. THE WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED AND THE FIX COST $2000. OPERATION WAS NORMAL DURING THE WINTER MONTHS, HOWEVER, WHEN THE WARM WEATHER RETURNED SO DID THE PROBLEM. AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC BELIEVES THE FAILSAFE MODE ISSUE WAS THE BEGINNING OF THE TRANSMISSION FAILURE AND FORD SHOULD NOT HAVE CHARGED $2000 FOR A NEW COMPUTER. THE PROBLEM HAS NOT BEEN RESOLVED AND CONTINUES TO OCCUR. THE DEALERSHIP'S SUGGESTION IS TO PULL OVER AND RESTART THE CAR TO CLEAR THE COMPUTER. THE CAR IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE, ESPECIALLY ON MULTIPLE LANE HIGHWAYS. ONCE THE FAILSAFE MODE ENGAGES, THERE IS LITTLE POWER TO GET THE CAR OFF THE ROAD. IF YOU ARE ON AN INCLINE IT WILL STOP ALTOGETHER. THIS IS A DANGEROUS SITUATION AND THE POSSIBILITY OF A REAR END COLLISION IS GREAT. FORD HAS NOT ISSUED A RECALL, ONLY A SERVICE ALERT FOR A FIX THAT DOES NOT WORK. *TR

THIS IS THE SECOND TIME THE DASH CLUSTER HAS FAILED IN MY FORD FIVE HUNDRED. IT WAS REPLACED THE FIRST TIME. WHILE UNDER THE PART WARRANTY OF 12MO/12K MILES, THE CLUSTER FAILED AGAIN. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY PULLED THE IDENTICAL CODES AS THE FIRST TIME THEY REPLACED THE CLUSTER, BUT WOULD NOT REPLACE IT THIS TIME BECAUSE NONE OF THE INDICATOR LAMPS WHERE ON AT THE TIME THEY LOOKED AT IT. NOW THE WRENCH, TRACTION CONTROL, CHECK ENGINE ARE LIT, AND THE DISPLAY READS CHECK ENGINE, CHECK TRANSMISSION, AND TRANSMISSION DATA ERROR. THESE ARE THE SAME AS THE LAST TIME WHEN IT WAS REPLACED. THE CAR WILL NOT ACCELERATE PROPERLY, AND THIS TIME AFTER PARKING THE CAR IT WOULD NOT RESTART. I CAME BACK IN ABOUT 20MIN. AND THE CAR STARTED. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER, NOW OUT OF THE PART WARRANTY AND NOW THEY IMMEDIATELY WANT TO REPLACE THE CLUSTER. SEEMS FORD JUST WANTED ME TO PAY FOR THE REPAIR, AGAIN. *TR
THE VEHICLE LUNGES WHILE HOLDING THE BRAKE WHEN PUTTING INTO REVERSE OR DRIVE AND CONTINUES TO DO SO WHILE WAITING TO PULL INTO TRAFFIC MAKING IT VERY DANGEROUS! IT ALSO DOES THIS WHILE TRYING TO PARK MAKING IT DANGEROUS TO PARK NEAR ANYTHING! I HAVE SEEN SEVERAL COMPLAINTS REGARDING THIS VERY SAME PROBLEM STATING IT IS A THROTTLE BODY DEFECT THAT COSTS AT LOWEST $700.00 TO REPAIR. FRONT SUSPENSION IS SHOT ALREADY WITH LOUD CLUNKING NOISES, VERY ROUGH RIDE! REAR DOORS FILL WITH WATER WHICH WILL RESULT IN RUST HOLES! THE FAILURE OCCURRED WHETHER THE VEHICLE WAS IN DRIVE OR REVERSE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER, WHO WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER HAD NOT BEEN NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. NO REPAIRS WERE PERFORMED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE WAS 106,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN.
WHILE STUCK IN RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC, CAR WAS AT A COMPLETE STOP AT A RED LIGHT. WHEN TRYING TO LET OFF THE GAS, THE CAR LURCHED FORWARD ALMOST PLOWING INTO THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. THIS OCCURRED ON 06/20/2012. DURING SUMMER 2011, THIS SAME TYPE OF BEHAVIOR OCCURRED 4 DIFFERENT TIMES. THE ENTIRE PROCESS BEGINS WITH THE CAR BEING AT A COMPLETE STOP, THEN WHEN LETTING OFF THE GAS, THE CAR'S ENGINE REV'S AND THE CAR LURCHES FORWARD REQUIRING THE DRIVER TO SLAM ON THE BREAKS FROM HITTING OTHER DRIVERS/PEDESTRIANS. WHEN THE VEHICLE DOES THIS LURCHING FORWARD MOTION, SEVERAL RED LIGHTS COME ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL AND ALSO THE COMPUTER READS AN ERROR OF "FAILSAFE ENGINE MODE". POWER STEERING, POWER BRAKES HAVE BEEN LOST WHILE THIS EVENT OCCURS AS WELL. SEEMS AS IF IT COULD BE AFFECTED BY WARMER WEATHER BECAUSE I HAVE OWNED THE VEHICLE TWO YEARS AND HAVE ONLY HAD THIS HAPPEN DURING WARMER (90 DEGREE OR MORE) WEATHER. DURING SUMMER 2011, TWO OCCURRENCES HAPPENED THAT ALSO ALMOST CAUSED COLLISIONS. THE FIRST TIME WAS ON A SUMMER NIGHT IN A PARKING GARAGE. AS I WAS COMING INTO A STOP IN A PARKING SPACE, THE ENGINE LURCHED FORWARD AND CAME APPROXIMATELY 4-5 INCHES FROM HITTING A CONCRETE WALL. DURING THE OTHER OCCURRENCE, I WAS STOPPING AT A RED LIGHT AND CAME CLOSE TO RUNNING OVER A PEDESTRIAN DUE TO LURCHING FROM CAR. WHEN CAR ENTERS "FAILSAFE ENGINE MODE' AND LURCHES FORWARD, CAR MUST BE PARKED AND RESTARTED FOR THE VEHICLE TO RUN NORMALLY AGAIN. ALSO, IT ONLY HAPPENS AT LOW SPEEDS (I.E. WHEN SLOWING THE CAR BELOW 5 MPH OR FIRST BEGINNING TO ACCELERATE THE CAR WHILE STILL BELOW 5 MPH). DIAGNOSED CODE P2106 AND P2135 THROTTLE BODY . OCCURS MORE WHEN A/C IS ON. HAD AIR FLOW SENSOR REPLACED, BUT PROBLEM STILL EXIST. *TR
DURING NORMAL OPERATION THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER GAUGES (SPEEDOMETER, TACHOMETER, ETC..) SWING FROM 0 TO MAX AND THEN DOWN TO 0. THE GAUGES STAY LIKE THAT FOR AWHILE THEN RETURN TO OPERATION. DURING THE GAUGE OUTAGE THE REVERSE LIGHTS ON THE CAR COME ON. THIS COULD LEAD TO AN ACCIDENT IF THE DRIVER BEHIND YOU IS NOT PAYING ATTENTION AS WELL AS POSSIBLE EQUIPMENT VIOLATION TICKETS FROM THE LOCAL POLICE. THERE IS A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN ABOUT THE PROBLEM BUT FORD DOESN'T SEEM TO THINK THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE. THE CAR IN QUESTION IS A 2005 FORD 500 WITH LESS THAN 50K MILES ON IT. THE CAR IS PRISTINE IN ALL OTHER AREAS, WE BABY THE CAR. *TR

THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WOULD ILLUMINATE ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL AND THE VEHICLE WOULD BEGIN TO DECELERATE. WHENEVER THE FAILURE OCCURRED, THE VEHICLE WOULD BE MOVED TO THE SHOULDER AND SHUT OFF. AFTER REPEATED RESTARTS, THE VEHICLE WOULD OPERATE AS NORMAL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE THROTTLE BODY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 61,200.
I PURCHASED A 2005 FORD 500 IN 2010 FROM FREEWAY FORD IN BLOOMINGTON, MN. THE FIRST INCIDENT THAT I HAD WAS WHEN MY BOYFRIEND WAS DRIVING AT SPEEDS OF 70 MPH WHEN ALL THE SUDDEN MY VEHICLE WENT INTO ENGINE FAIL SAFE MODE AND LOST ACCELERATION. WITH SPEEDS OF 70 MPH AND 5 LANES OF TRAFFIC WE ARE LUCKY THAT NOTHING WORSE FOLLOWED. THIS PROBLEM WOULD COME UP AGAIN AT RANDOM TIMES. A MORE RECENT INCIDENT WAS I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP TO HAVE THEM CLEAN THE THROTTLE BODY AND RESET THE MODULE. SINCE THAT WAS TAKEN CARE OF MY CAR HAS NOW WORSENED. IT HAS GONE INTO FAIL SAFE MODE 5 TIMES IN ONE MONTH. MY CAR WILL NOT ACCELERATE NORMAL AND WHEN I START IT THERE ARE TIMES WHERE MY RPM ARE RUNNING HIGHER THAN NORMAL. *TR

I HAVE A 2005 FORD FIVE HUNDRED WITH 68K MILES. I WAS LEAVING A REST AREA AND ACCELERATING ONTO THE INTERSTATE. MY CAR SHUDDERED AND HAD NO POWER. I NOTICED THE ENGINE FAIL SAFE MODE LIGHT. I WENT TO THE SHOULDER AND STOPPED THE CAR. I WAITED A MINUTE AND RESTARTED THE CAR. MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. THIS IS REPEAT OF SYMPTOMS I HAD TWO WEEKS AGO. THE FORD DEALER REPLACED THE THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY TWO WEEKS AGO. AT THAT TIME, I WAS IN LINE AT MY GRANDSON'S SCHOOL. SAME SYMPTOMS EXCEPT THAT THE CAR SHUDDERED AND THEN ACCELERATED. FORTUNATELY, I HAD MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE. OVER THE LAST SIX MONTHS, I HAVE HAD REPEATED ENGINE FAIL SAFE MODES, BUT HAVE ALWAYS RESET WHEN I TURN OFF THE CAR AND WAIT A FEW MINUTES. FORD HAS A SAFETY ISSUE WITH THIS THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY. MINE HAS BEEN REPLACED TWICE. CAR IS IN THE SHOP FOR THE THIRD TIME FOR THE SAME PROBLEM. *TR

THE CONTACT SHIFTED INTO REVERSE GEAR, THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED BACKWARDS AND STALLED. THE FAILURE OCCURRED APPROXIMATELY FOUR TIMES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO STATED THE THROTTLE BODY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND STATED THE REPAIRS WOULD NOT BE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 82,000.

THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER WHERE THEY DIAGNOSED THAT THE THROTTLE BOTTLE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 102, 000.

DASH CLUSTER DISPLAYS CHECK ENGINE, CHECK TRANSMISSION, AND TRACTION CONTROL LIGHTS. THE TROUBLE INDICATORS ILLUMINATE, AND THE VEHICLE WILL NOT ACCELERATE NORMALLY. AFTER TURNING OFF AND RESTARTING VEHICLE MAY OR MAY NOT DRIVE NORMAL WITH TROUBLE INDICATORS STILL LIT. AFTER SHUTTING OFF AND RESTARTING SOMETIMES THE INDICATORS ARE OFF AND THE VEHICLE DRIVES NORMALLY FOR SOME TIME AND THEN THE PROBLEM RETURNS. THIS HAPPENS WHILE DRIVING AND DOES NOT ALLOW THE DRIVER TO ACCELERATE NORMALLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER AND THE DASH CLUSTER WAS REPLACED AND I WAS INFORMED THEY KNEW OF THE PROBLEM WITH THE CLUSTER. THE PROBLEM HAS REOCCURRED A FEW MONTHS LATER. *TR

THE CONTACT CONTINUED TO DRIVE AND THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER BEGAN WORKING A FEW MOMENTS LATER. THE FAILURE OCCURRED INTERMITTENTLY WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INSPECTED OR REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 70,000.

HE THEN NOTICED THAT DURING BELOW FREEZING TEMPERATURES, THE DRIVER AND FRONT PASSENGER DOORS WOULD BECOME UNLATCHED INDEPENDENTLY OR WOULD NOT LATCH AT ALL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER AND THEY ADVISED HIM THAT THEY WERE UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE AND THAT HE WOULD POTENTIALLY NEED TO REPLACE THE LATCHES BUT THE REPAIRS WOULD NOT BE COVERED UNDER THE PREVIOUS RECALL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND THEY OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 138,000.

THE THROTTLE BODY IS DEFECTIVE AND NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. THE SYMPTOMS ARE VERY DANGEROUS: THE CAR GOES INTO FAIL SAFE MODE AND CANNOT ACCELERATE. ON ONE OCCASION THIS HAPPENED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD; FORTUNATELY IT WAS A QUIET STREET AND I WAS ABLE TO COAST TO THE SIDE OF THE STREET. IF THIS HAD HAPPENED ON A BUSY STREET IT COULD HAVE CAUSED INJURY OR DEATH. SEVERAL MECHANICS DID DIFFERENT KINDS OF REPAIRS, BUT THE PROBLEM KEPT RECURRING. WE ARE NOW GETTING THE THROTTLE BODY REPLACED AND HOPE THIS IS THE FINAL REPAIR THAT REMOVES THE PROBLEM. NUMEROUS OTHER FORD FIVE HUNDRED OWNERS HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS (PER INTERNET RESEARCH). THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 79,000.

EXISTING RESEARCH BY NHTSA INDICATES EXTERIOR LIGHTING WORKING ON PREVIOUS COMPLAINTS. INTERNET RESEARCH INDICATES TURN SIGNALS AND REVERSE LIGHTS DO NOT OPERATE WHEN CLUSTER FAILS. THE PROBLEM IS A FAULTY SOLDER JOINT AND THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. THIS IS NOT DUE TO NORMAL WEAR FROM DRIVING BUT FROM POOR DESIGN AND SHOULD BE RECALLED. FORD SHOULD CORRECT THEIR MISTAKES.

NOT LONG AFTER PURCHASING MY VEHICLE MY HUSBAND AND I WERE DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL ON AND THE TRANSMISSION STOPPED WORKING. THE PROBLEM IS STILL THERE AND SEEMS TO BE GETTING WORSE. THE DASH WILL LIGHT CHECK TRANSMISSION, TRACTION CONTROL AND SOMETIMES CHECK ENGINE. ONCE THE CAR IS TURNED OFF AND BACK ON IT IS FINE FOR A WHILE, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT TAKES SOME TIME TO GO OFF. IT IS GETTING SO WE ARE AFRAID TO DRIVE IT, SOMETIMES IT DRIVES FINE AND OTHERS THE TRANSMISSION QUITS. THE OTHER DAY I WENT TO PASS A CAR AND THE LIGHTS CAME ON AS I HAD MOVED INTO THE LANE TO PASS ON THE INTERSTATE. ONCE I WAS IN MY LANE AGAIN A FEW MINUTES LATER IT DOES IT AGAIN AND THIS TIME A BIG MAC TRUCK IS COMING UP ON ME. I HAVE READ OF SEVERAL PROBLEMS OF THIS WITH THIS SAME CAR AND IT HAS BEEN SAID THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE THROTTLE BODY AND/OR ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. APPARENTLY, I AM NOT THE FIRST PERSON TO BRING THIS ISSUE TO THE NHTSA'S ATTENTION. I LIKE SO MANY OTHER, HAVE ALSO HAD A PROBLEM WITH MY INSTRUMENT PANEL ON MY FORD FIVE HUNDRED. I WOULD LIKE FOR A RECALL TO BE ISSUED AS IT HAS NEARLY CAUSED ME AN ACCIDENT TODAY, AND CAN LEAD TO OTHER HAZARDOUS DRIVING CONDITIONS FOR OTHERS. THE INSTRUMENT PANEL ON MY CAR HAS FAILED COMPLETELY, AND MY SPEEDOMETER, ODOMETER, AND ALL OTHER GAUGES SHUT OFF. WHENEVER I DRIVE MY CAR, THE REVERSE (OR WHITE) LIGHT TURNS ON DESPITE THE FACT THAT I MIGHT BE DRIVING FORWARD AT 55MPH ON A HIGHWAY. I THINK CORRECTIVE ACTION SHOULD BE TAKEN TOWARDS A RESOLUTION.
