WHILE DRIVING ABOUT 65 MPH ON THE HIGHWAY VEHICLE STALLED AND SHUT DOWN DUE TO BATTERY CABLE WIRE MELTING. CONSUMER WAS ABLE TO STEER ONTO THE SIDE OF THE SHOULDER.*AK
WHILE DRIVING DOWN A FREEWAY OFF-RAMP, MY 2001 FORD FOCUS ZX3 STARTED TO BUCK AND HESITATE, EVENTUALLY STALLING AND CAUSING A DANGEROUS CONDITION DUE TO SUDDEN DECCELERATION AND LOSS OF POWER STEERING AND BRAKES. LUCKILY THE VEHICLE HAD ENOUGH INERTIA TO COAST DOWN THE RAMP AND EVENTUALLY I WAS ABLE TO PULL IT INTO AN EMERGENCY LANE USING THE REMAINING ASSIST LEFT IN THE BRAKE BOOSTER. THERE, I ATTEMPTED MULTIPLE TIMES TO RESTART THE VEHICLE AND IT FINALLY STARTED. IT HAD A HALF TANK OF FUEL SO LOW FUEL LEVEL WAS NOT THE CAUSE AND I HAD ONLY DRIVEN 163 MILES SINCE THE LAST FILL-UP SO I KNEW THE FUEL GUAGE WAS OPERATIONAL. I ATTEMPTED TO DRIVE TO THE NEAREST GAS STATION TO FILL UP JUST IN CASE AND AS I AS ABOUT TO TURN IN THE CAR DIED AGAIN. IT RESTARTED AFTER MULTIPLE ATTEMPTS AND I WAITED A LONG TIME FOR TRAFFIC TO GET AS CLEAR AS IT WOULD ON THIS BUSY ROAD. THEN, AS I ATTEMPTED TO TURN IN, CREEPING FORWARD AND FEARING THE WORST, THE CAR DIED AGAIN, BUT LUCKILY I HAD NOT YET BEGUN TO IMPEDE ONCOMING TRAFFIC. IF I HAD BEEN, AN ACCIDENT WOULD LIKELY HAVE RESULTED. AFTER MULTIPLE ATTEMPTS, THE VEHICLE DID START AND I PULLED IN, FILLED UP, AND DROVE HOME UNEVENTFULLY TO DO SOME RESEARCH. ON THE MESSAGE BOARD AT FOCALJET.COM I READ ABOUT OTHER FOCUS CONSUMERS ENCOUNTERING A SIMILAR PROBLEM WITH A DEFECTIVE FUEL PUMP AND SOME SORT OF DEGRADATION OF A MATERIAL LINING THE FUEL TANK CAUSING THE CONDITION I EXPERIENCED. I FEEL IT IS A SAFETY CONCERN OF HIGH PRIORITY AND SHOULD BE BROUGHT TO FORD'S ATTENTION IMMEDIATELY. I AM ANGRY THAT MY LIFE WAS PUT IN DANGER RUNNING THE MOST MUNDANE OF ERRANDS AND I WILL LET THEM KNOW ABOUT IT TOMMORROW.
UPON STARTING VEHICLE STEERING COLUMN LOCKED UP. VEHICLE WAS TOWED THE DEALERSHIP, WHO REPLACED THE IGNITION SWITCH . THIS FAILURE RECURRED TWICE, AND THE IGNITION SWITCH WAS REPLACED TWICE. *AK
MY VEHICLE FEELS LIKE IT'S MISSING OR ABOUT TO STALL AND I HAVE TAKEN IT TO FORD AND THEY SAY THEY CAN NOT DO ANYTHING FOR ME.THEY SAY IT'S A CHARACTERISTIC OF FORD FOCUS 2001 WITH JUST OVER 19,000 MILES. FIRST TIME DEALER REPLACED THE SERPENTINE BELT, AND SECOND TIME DEALER REPLACED NUTS AND BOLTS AND SERPENTINE BELTS. BUT SQUEAKING NOISE STILL OCCURRING. *AK
WAS DRIVING THE TURNER TURNPIKE BACK FROM FUNERAL, CRUISE CONTROL ON AT 76 MPH. BOOM FROM UNDER THE CAR, OIL LIGHT COMES ON, SMOKE BILLOWING OUT FROM UNDERNEATH. I PULLED OVER, TURN THE ENGINE OFF. THE WHOLE ENGINE COVERED IN OIL. BEHIND IS A TRAIL OF OIL FROM OVER THE HILL TO WHERE I HAD STOPPED. I'M PRETTY SURE THE ENGINE IS GONE. NO KNOCKING, TEMP WAS RIGHT, NO WARNING LIGHT, JUST BOOM! DIDN'T EVEN GET TO 50,000 MILES. WHAT A CROCK!
ALSO NOV/20/01 MY ELECTRIC WINDOWS STOPPED WORKING ONCE AGAIN.....WARRENTY COVERED THAT.
AIRBAGS DEPLOYED AT MINOR FENDER-BENDER, SO MINOR THAT THERE WAS NO DAMAGE TO EITHER CAR, THE ONLY DAMAGE WAS FROM THE AIRBAGS-CAUSED THE WINSHIELD TO BREAK AND A SECOND DEGREE BURN ON DRIVER'S RIGHT ARM.
THE VEHICLE'S TAILGATE UNLATCHED AND OPENED. THE DEALER WAS CONTACTED. PLEASE PROVIDE ANY ADDITIONAL INFORMATION. *NM
WHEN ATTEMPTING TO START VEHICLE IGNITION LOCKED WITHOUT WARNING. *AK
2001 FORD FOCUS SW RIGHT REAR BRAKE LIGHT QUIT WORKING. TRIED TO FOLLOW THE PROCEDURE IN THE OWNER'S MANUAL TO REPLACE BULB. TOOK THE OPPORTUNITY TO TRY TO REPLACE LEFT BULB. NEITHER BULB SOCKET WOULD COME OUT OF THEIR RESPECTIVE LAMP ASSEMBLIES. ACCIDENTLY BROKE-OFF THE BULB HOLDER FROM THE LEFT SOCKET. THE BULB AND ITS HOLDER FELL INTO THE LAMP ASSEMBLY. THIS EXPOSED THE LAMP ASSEMBLY FITTING TO VIEW. IT WAS MELTED. THEREFORE, IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO CHANGE A BURNT BULB BECAUSE THE LAMP ASSEMBLY WAS TOO DISTORTED FROM MELTING TO FREE THE SOCKET. THE LIGHTS WERE SUBJECT TO NORMAL USE.*AK THE TERMS SOCKET AND LAMP ASSEMBLY ARE AS USED IN THE OWNER'S MANUAL.*AK
I HAVE HAD "BRAKE ISSUES SINCE DAY ONE OF OWNING MY 2001 FORD FOCUS STATION WAGON. FROM THE VERY BEGINNING THERE WAS MOANING SOUNDS WHEN I BRAKED. THE SALESMAN & SERVICE DEPT TOLD ME "IT'S BECAUSE THEY ARE NEW", @ AROUND 13,000 MILES THEY BEGAN TO MAKE MORE PROMINANT "MOANS" I WAS TOLD THAT IT'S "NORMAL". AT 16,500 MILES SEVERE MOANING & GRINDING, THEN NOT BEING ABLE TO STOP EASILY, I BROUGHT IT IN TO AN INDEPENDANT MECHANIC , SINCE MY BUMPER TO BUMPER WARRANTY DOES NOT COVER "NORMAL WEAR & TEAR ITEMS" SUCH AS BRAKES & I WAS TOLD I WOULD HAVE TO PAY A DIAGNOSTIC FEE,ALSO NOT IN MY WARRANTY, TO DETERMINE WHAT THE ISSUES ARE,& THIS MECHANIC TOLD ME THAT I WAS METAL TO METAL, I NEEDED NEW FRONT ROTORS & PADS, $250.ALSO THAT THE FOCUS HAS BRAKE PROBLEMS & WAS NOT DESIGNED WELL. HERE IT IS 3 MONTHS LATER & @19,800 MILES MY BACK BRAKES START SQUEALING & SCREECHING LOUDLY, I BRING IT IN AGAIN & THE SHOES ARE COMPLETELY WORN DOWN & I NEEDED THE ROTORS MACHINED, IT WAS ANOTHER $135 (WHICH WAS I BARGAIN SINCE I CALLED THE FORD DEALER & THEY WANTED @$300 FOR THAT WORK). HE TOLD ME THAT HIS SHOP DOES ALL THE FLEET WORK FOR A NEIGHBORING ENTERPRISE RENTAL CAR OFFICE & THE FOCUS' ARE CONSTANTLY IN THERE FOR BRAKES. I CALLED FORD'S CUSTOMER SATISFACTION LINE & REPORTED THE ISSUE. I AM MAILING A LETTER TO FORD'S DISPUTE RESOLUTION BOARD & I AM HOPING THAT YOU WILL HELP US FOCUS OWNERS WITH BAD BRAKES GET RETRIBUTION FROM FORD FOR THIS FAULTY SYSTEM. THANK YOU

PREMATURE BRAKE PAD AND ROTOR REPLACEMENTS ON FRONT OF FORD FOCUS SEDAN. BRAKES REPLACED AT 21,000 MILES. I HAVE NEVER HAD TO REPLACE ROTORS ON ANY CAR THIS EARLY. FORD OWNERS OF FOCUS HAVE LISTED THIS PROBLEM HUNDREDS OF TIMES. YET I KNOW OF NO RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM. SOME HAVE HAD IT IN LESS THAN 10,000 MILES. THIS REALLY NEEDS TO BE LOOKED INTO. *JB
MY FORD FOCUS 2001 SE WILL SUDDENLY LOCK ALL THE DOORS AND I CAN'T GET BACK IN. I BOUGHT THE CAR 3 WEEKS AGO AND WAS ONLY GIVEN ONE KEY. NOW THEY WANT $78 FOR ANOTHER KEY. I THINK IF THAT IS THE ONLY KEY THAT WORKS, I SHOULD HAVE 2. THE DOORS WILL LOCK WITHOUT ME PUSHING THE LOCK BUTTON. *NLM
LEFT REAR HUB SEPARATED, CAUSING WHEEL TO COME OFF CAUSING ACCIDENT.*AK
I PURCHASED A 2001 FORD FOCUS IN AUGUST 2001. IN SEPT. 2001 WITH ONLY 2240 MILES ON THE CAR TRANSMISSION SEEMED TO BE SLIPPING AND THE CAR FAILED TO ACCELERATE PROPERLY. HAD IT TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID THERE WAS A LEAK IN TRANSMISSION LINE. THIS WAS REPAIRED. IN OCT. 2002 AT 16416 MILES HEADLIGHTS WOULD NOT COME ON WHEN I TURNED THE SWITCH. SWITCH WAS REPLACED. ABOUT THIS SAME TIME NEW BRAKE PADS WERE REQUIRED. NOV. 2002 AT 17871 MILES THE IGNITION CYLINDER LOCKED UP. CAR WAS TOWED AND IGNITION CYLINDER REPLACED. AUGUST 2003 AT 26757 MILES IGNITION CYLINDER LOCKED UP AGAIN. ONCE AGAIN THE CAR WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER AND IGNITION CYLINDER WAS REPLACED. NOW I HAVE A BUBBLE IN ONE TIRE AND MY BRAKES ARE SQUEALING. WHAT'S NEXT? NOT ONCE HAVE I PICKED MY CAR UP FROM THE DEALER AND IT BEEN WASHED OR VACUUMED OUT. I BOUGHT A NEW CAR BECAUSE I NEEDED RELIABLE TRANSPORTATION. NOW I FEEL LIKE TAKING IT BACK TO THE DEALER AND LETTING THEM KEEP IT. I WONDER HOW MANY FORD EMPLOYEES WOULD BUY A FOCUS?. *AK
I WAS SITTING AT A RED LIGHT. WHEN THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN, THE DRIVER IN FRONT OF ME MOVED AND I MOVED BEHIND HIM I MUST HAVE SLIGHTLY TAPPED HIS BUMPER. I AM SAYING MUST HAVE BECAUSE THE OTHER DRIVER KEPT ON GOING AS NOTHING HAD HAPPENED. BOTH AIR BAGS DEPLOYED AND THE PASSENGER BAG CRACKED THE WINDSHIELD. THE DRIVER'S AIR BAG GAVE ME 2ND AND 3RD DEGREES BURNS ON MY LEFT ARM. I CALLED FORD TRYING TO GET THEM TO FIX IT FOR FREE BECAUSE I FEEL THAT THE SWITCH THAT ENABLES THE AIR BAGS IS DEFECTIVE AND BECAUSE THE CAR ONLY HAS 40,000 MILES AND THEIR WARRANTY IS 36,000. FORD TOLD ME TO GET MY INSURANCE TO PAY FOR IT. MY CAR HAS NO DAMAGE WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE AIR BAGS AND WINDSHIELD. *NLM

WATER LEAKS INTO PASSENGER FLOOR WHEN IT RAINS I HAVE HAD TO DEALER TWICE STILL NOT FIXED NOW WARRANTY HAS RUN OUT. *JB
I PURCHASED A 2001 FORD FOCUS ON MY WAY TO WORK WHILE PULLING INTO MY PARKING SPACE THE CAR ACCELERATED UNEXPECTEDLY THEN THE BRAKES DID NOT WORK. I THEN PULLED ON THE EMERGENCY BRAKES WHICH DID NOT WORK TO IMMEDIATELY STOP THE CAR. I CRASHED HEAD ON INTO THE CAR IN FRONT OF THE PARKING SPACE. ALSO, UPON IMPACT THE AIRBAGS DID NOT INFLATE. THE CAR WAS SUPPOSEDLY TO HAVE FRONT AND SIDE IMPACT AIRBAGS AND ONE IN THE STEERING WHEN AND NOTHING HAPPENED. MY CHEST WENT STRAIGHT INTO THE STEERING WHEEL SO HARD THERE WAS A CIRCULAR IMPRINT AROUND MY CHEST AND STOMACH. AFTER PEOPLE CAME TO SEE ABOUT ME ONE MAN ASKED IF MY CAR WAS OFF. I SAID YES AND HE POINTED OUT THE CAR STILL LOOKED LIKE IT WAS TRYING TO ACCELERATE. THE WHEELS WERE SPINNING FULL FORCE. I TOOK THE CAR BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP I ONLY HAD IT FOR 3 DAYS AND NOTHING WAS DONE TO CORRECT THE FAILURE. THE OWNER OF THE DEALERSHIP SAID SINCE THE CAR WAS IN A WRECK IT WAS WORTHLESS TO HIM AND THERE WAS NOTHING HE COULD DO. HE EVEN THREATENED THAT HE WOULD CALL THE POLICE IF MY FAMILY AND MYSELF DID NOT LEAVE. *JB

BRAKES WERE SQUEALING FROM THE TIME OF PURCHASE (NEW CAR), BUT WE WERE TOLD THAT THEY WOULD "LOOSEN UP" AND BE OKAY --- THEY NEVER DID STOP SQUEALING..WHEN WE INQUIRED ABOUT ANY RECALL, WE WERE TOLD THERE WERE NO RECALLS FROM THE FACTORY WHERE THE CAR WAS MANUFACTURED.*AK
CAR IS A 2001 FOCUS WITH 21,000 MILES. UPON BRAKING, STEERING WHEEL SHUDDERS AND VIBRATES. WAS TOLD THAT CAR NEEDED NEW ROTORS AS THESE WERE WARPED. NO RESOLUTION THROUGH FORD MOTOR COMPANY. NO CAR SHOULD REQUIRE BRAKES AND ROTORS AFTER ONLY 21,000 MILES OF DRIVING. CAR ACTUALLY STARTED DOING THIS AT ABOUT 19,000 MILES AND HAS STAEDILY WORSENED. *AK
BULGE FORMED IN THE SIDEWALL OF THE ORIGINAL FIRESTONE FIREHAWK GTA 02 TIRE, SIZE 205/50R16, AS PROVIDED AS ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT ON MY 2001 FORD FOCUS ZX3. THE BULGE SEEMED TO INCLUDE THE AREA WHERE THE STEEL BELTS JOIN WITH THE SIDEWALL, SO I HAD THE TIRE REPLACED IMMEDIATELY FOR FEAR OF A TREAD SEPARATION EVENT. *NLM

MY 2001 FOCUS ZX3 WILL SPUTTER, LOSE POWER, AND THREATEN TO STALL. THIS OCCURS AT ANY SPEED. IT HAS STALLED AND LEFT ME STRANDED ONCE. WHEN TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP, NOTHING COULD BE FOUND WRONG WITH IT AND SO I WAS CHARGED NOTHING. IT STARTED UP AGAIN JUST FINE, BUT PERIODICALLY THREATENS TO STALL AGAIN. ALSO, THE PAINT OVER THE DRIVER SIDE REAR WHEEL IS BUBBLING UP AND COMING OFF.
RIGHT REAR LOWER CONTROL ARM/REAR TRAILER ARM BROKE IN HALF, NEAR THE REAR RIGHT WHEEL, OF MY FORD FOCUS 2001 AFTER DRIVING ON SANDY ROAD DURING A RAIN SHOWER.
DT: CONTACT COMPLAINED ABOUT A FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM PROBLEM. WHEN THE CAR CAME TO A FULL STOP THE ENGINE TURNED OFF. AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC ADVISED THE CONTACT TO TAKE THE CAR TO THE DEALER, WHICH SHE HAS NOT DONE. ADDITIONALLY, THE TURNING LIGHTS WERE NOT RETURNING TO THE ORIGINAL POSITION WHEN USED. SHE PURCHASED THE CAR FROM A FAMILY MEMBER. THEREFORE, SHE DID NOT KNOW THE DEALER'S NAME.*AK
MY 2001 FORD FOCUS ZX3'S COIL SPRINGS BROKE ,CAUSING ME TO HAVE TO REPLACE THE COIL SPRINGS, STRUTS, AND GET AN ALIGNMENT DONE. I NOTICED THAT THE 2000 FOCUS HAS A RECALL FOR THE COIL SPRINGS, BUT THE 2001 DOES NOT. I HAVE NOTICED MULTIPLE COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE 2001 FOCUS AS WELL AS THE 2000 DURING AN INTERNET SEARCH. I WOULD LIKE REIMBURSEMENT FOR THE ITEMS LISTED ABOVE FROM FORD DUE TO THE DEFECTIVE COIL SPRINGS.*AK
FORD FOCUS SPED UP FOR NO REASON AND THEN VEERED TO LEFT CROSSING LEFT LANE AND WENT INTO DITCH WHICH HAD A CULVERT AND THE CAR THEN BOUNCED INTO A CORNFIELD. AIRBAGS DEPLOYED FOR BOTH DRIVER AND PASSENGER. DRIVER HAD BROKEN RIBS AND OTHER BRUISES. PASSENGER HAD CHEST INJURIES FROM WHICH HE DIED COUPLE HOURS LATER. THE INSPECTING OFFICER SAID WITNESSES INSISTED THEY DID NOT SEE BRAKE LIGHTS, AND IF THERE WAS ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR THE DRIVER WOULD HAVE HIT THE BRAKES. DRIVER REMEMBERED THE ACCIDENT, AND WAS AWAKE AND TALKING TO PASSENGER. SHE WAS HOSPITALIZED AND HAD NEUROLOGICAL TESTS AND DID NOT HAVE A STROKE. *AK
FRONT BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS FOR MY 2001 FORD FOCUS WAGON NEED TO BE REPLACED AFTER JUST 37,700 MILES. THE BRAKES ON THE CAR HAVE SQUEALED ALMOST SINCE DAY ONE (WE PURCHASED IT NEW IN AUGUST 2001), HAVE HAD IT IN TO THE DEALER FOR CHECKING AND REPAIRS NUMEROUS TIMES (MCMAHON FORD, NORWALK, CT) AND THEY SAID IT'S NORMAL FOR BRAKES TO SQUEAL, OR THAT THEY CAN'T REPLICATE THE PROBLEM, OR THAT IT'S DUE TO DUST, OR DENIED THAT THEY SQUEALED AT ALL. THE REPAIR PLACE SAYS THE ROTORS CANNOT BE TURNED AND THAT THE BRAKES WERE MADE TO BARELY MINIMUM STANDARDS. THEY ARE RETURNING THE WORN PARTS. THERE WAS NEVER ANY INDICATION THAT THE BRAKES WERE FAILING (FOR ONE THING, BECAUSE OF THE PERMANENT SQUEAL) AND THE DEALERSHIP DID NOT FIND THIS PROBLEM THE LAST TIME WE HAD IT IN FOR A CHECKUP BEFORE IT WENT OUT OF WARRANTY, WHICH IS OF THE MOST CONCERN TO ME. *JB

I PURCHASED MY 2001 FORD FOCUS ON AUGUST 6 2002. IN THE LAST YEAR I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE ALL BRAKES AND NOW MY IGNITION IS STUCK. I TOOK THE CAR TO MY DEALERSHIP (CITRUS FORD IN ONTARIO CALIFORNIA) AND AFTER SPENDING AN EXTRA 1200 ON AN EXTRENDED WARRANTY WHEN I PURCHASED THE CAR, THEY TOLD ME THE IGNITION CYLINDER WAS NOT COVERED UNDER MY WARRANTY. HAVE THEY LOOKED AT THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE THAT ARE HAVING THIS PROBLEM. I AM NOW SPENDING ABOUT 595.00 FOR A NEW IGNITION CYLINDER. THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM FOR ALL FOCUS OWNERS. WHY HAS THERE NOT BEEN A RECALL OR AT LEAST AN AMENDMENT SO THE WARRANTY WILL COVER THE COST.*AK
FUEL PUMP FAILED ON 2001 FORD FOCUS Z AFTER ONLY 48000 MILES. STRANDED IN DESERT NEAR BARSTOW CALIFORNIA. THIS IS A KNOIWN AND COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE FOCUS.*AK
IGNITION CYLINDER BROKE WITHOUT ANY SIGNS, AND WAS STUCK WITHOUT A CAR FOR A WEEK. *AK
CONSUMER EXPERIENCED SUDDEN LOST OF POWER AND SURGING AT DIFFERENT LEVELS OF SPEED. *PH THE CONSUMER RECEIVED A RECALL REGARDING THE FUEL PUMP, THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED AND IT WAS DISCOVERED THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE PUMP. THE CONSUMER WAS INFORMED THE PART WAS NOT AVAILABLE AND HAD TO BE ORDERED. THE CONSUMER WAS TOLD THE PUMP AND FILTER WOULD BE REPLACED, HOWEVER THE FILTER WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL AND WOULD COST $40.00. THE CONSUMER REQUESTED REIMBURSEMENT. *JB
THE FUEL FILTER GETS CLOGGED WHICH BLOCKS THE FLOW OF FUEL TO THE ENGINE, CAUSING STALLING. THIS IS THE THIRD TIME THAT THE FUEL FILTER HAD TO BE REPLACED. MY 2001 FORD FOCUS SE 4DR TENDS TO STALL OUT AFTER USING THE AIR CONDITIONER. THE STALLING BEHAVIOUR STARTS AFTER THE A/C HAS BEEN ON FOR A WHILE AND CONTINUES AFTER THE A/C IS TURNED OFF. THE ENGINE SPUTTERS AND WILL STALL WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS.*AK
CONSUMER STATES THAT SINCE PURCHASING THE VEHICLE REAR BRAKE PADS WORE OUT AT 8000 MILES. FRONT ROTORS AND PADS HAVE BEEN REPLACED TWICE. ONCE AT 12000 MILES, AND 34000 MILES. NEEDS TO REPLACE THEM AGAIN.*AK
