PROBLEM IS ONGOING.WHEN THE GAS TANK IS LESS THAN 1/4 TANK FULL, THE ENGINE HESITATES, AS IF IT'S NOT GETTING ENOUGH FUEL, WHEN I TRY TO RESUME SPEED AFTER DROPPING FROM HIGHWAY SPEED OF 40+ TO ANYTHING BELOW THAT AND THEN TRY TO ACCELERATE AGAIN. PROBLEM TYPICALLY OCCURS WHEN MERGING ONTO A THRUWAY FROM AN ACCESS RAMP. MY MECHANIC SPECULATES THAT FUEL PUMP IN GAS TANK DOESN'T GET ENOUGH FUEL BECAUSE WHAT FUEL IS LEFT SLOSHES AWAY FROM PUMP. PROBLEM IS LONG-STANDING, FUEL FILTER HAS BEEN REPLACED BUT DIDN'T HELP. I CHOSE TO KEEP THE TANK FULL RATHER THAN SPEND $100S OF DOLLARS INVESTIGATING PROBLEM.*AK SPECIAL NOTE: MODEL IS A STATION WAGON WITH A MANUAL TRANSMISSION.
MY KEY WAS STUCK IN THE IGNITION SWITCH. IT DID NOT TURN EASILY. LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO START THE CAR, AND BRING IT TO THE DEALER. THEY REPLACED IGNITION TUMBLER AT 31500 MILES.*AK
CAR MADE SQUEALING SOUND FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. THEY CHECKED, AND FOUND THAT SERPENTINE BELT WAS LOOSE. THEY REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY AT 31500, BUT IT IS TOTALLY RARE FOR A SERPENTINE BELT TO GO BAD THAT EARLY. *AK
CONSUMER STATES IGNITION SWITCH IS NOT WORKING PROPERLY. DEALER NOTIFIED. *AK
I AM WRITING TO YOU IN REGARD TO A HOST OF PROBLEMS I AM CURRENTLY EXPERIENCING WITH MY 2001 FORD FOCUS ZX3.THESE PROBLEMS INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO: (1) GEARS NOT SHIFTING PROPERLY AND SIGNS OF LOCKING UP DURING DRIVING -- AND BRAKE GRINDING SOUNDS; (2) CONTINUOUS "FLICKERING" OF HEADLIGHTS AND DASHBOARD PANEL LIGHTS; (3) AIR CONDITIONING AND HEATING SYSTEMS NOT FUNCTIONING PROPERLY; (4) LARGE POND OF WATER (DURING HEAVY RAINS) IN FLOOR ON FRONT PASSENGER SIDE; (5) PROBLEMS WITH FUEL MODULE AND FUEL MONITOR; AND (6) TRANSMISSION FAILURE IN PROGRESS. TRANSMISSION FAILURE IN PROGRESS -- ECM CODES ERASED BY DEALERSHIP -- FUEL MONITOR AND BAD RUNNING CONDITION VERY EVIDENT. HE FURTHER STATED THE FLUID IS BURNT VERY BADLY, HE CANNOT SERVICE THE TRANSMISSION AT THIS POINT AND THAT THIS VEHICLE IS GOING TO GO DOWNHILL FROM HERE. IN OTHER WORDS, THE 2001 FOCUS THAT I PURCHASED FROM TOWN & COUNTRY FORD, INC. ONLY NINE MONTHS AGO IS NOT DRIVABLE AND IT WILL COST AT LEAST $2,000 TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION. THIS IS CLEARLY A DEFECT. IT HAS TO BE! I CANNOT AFFORD TO REPAIR THIS VEHICLE AND MAKE PAYMENTS ON IT AT THE SAME TIME.

CAR SUDDENLY STALLS WHEN TAKING A SWEEPING RIGHT HAND TURN. POWER STEERING IS INOPERABLE, LEAVING AUTO IN MIDDLE OF ROAD OR HIGHWAY RAMP.
THE TIRE AND THE BRAKES WENT OUT AND THE CAR STATED SLIDING. AFTER THE CRASH THERE WERE BOLTS THAT WERE FOUND ON THE GRASS WHERE THE CRASH HAPPENED
CONSUMER STATED WAS INVOLVED IN FRONT COLLISION AND NEITHER OF THE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED. DEALER NOTIFIED. *AK
(1) DRIVING ALONG I-80 IN ILLINOIS BETWEEN THE IOWA BORDER AND PERU, ILLINOIS. (2) REAR PASSENGER SIDE TIRE BLEW OUT. IT WAS COMPLETELY SHREDDED. (3) THE TIRE (FIRESTONE FIREHAWK) WAS REPLACED. *LA
VEHICLE ACCELERATED WITHOUT DRIVER TOUCHING THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. OVER $5,000 FOR REPAIR.*AK
VEHICLE SHUT OFF WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED. DEALER HAS INSPECTED SEVERAL TIMES AND COULD NOT DUPLICATE OR CORRECT THE PROBLEM. *AK
THE KEY DIDN'T GO ALL THE WAY DOWN INTO IGNITION. I HAD TO REPLACE THE IGNITION LOCK CYLINDER.*AK
VIOLENT SHAKING OF STEARING WHEEL WHEN BREAKING DUE TO WARPING OF BREAK ROTERS. ROTERS WERE REPLACED AT 5000, 11,000, 20,000 MILES AND RECENTLY TURNRD AT 31,00 MILES. THE RATE OF FAILURE OF THE ROTERS IS UNACCEPTABLE AND A HAZZARD.
I TOOK MY CAR TO SEQUIOA NATIONAL FOREST ON MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND. MY CAR WAS ACTING GREAT TIL I TIL THE GRAPEVINE MY CAR SUDDENLY DID NOT WANT TO CHANGE GEAR IT WOULD GET STUCK MAKING MY RPM REALLY HIGH I WAS AFRAID I WAS GOING TO BURNOUT MY ENGINE AFTER I GOT INTO INTO THE MOUNTAINS THE CAR WAS FINE AGAIN MAYBE CAUSE I WAS DRIVING UNDER 30 MPH BUT AS SOON AS I GOT INTO THE HIGHWAY AGAIN I WAS FINE AS LONG AS KEPT THE SAME PACE OF THE CAR WHICH WAS 80 MPH AS SOON AS I GOT LIKE 85 OR LOWER TO 65 MPH IT WOULD GET STUCK. UNFORTUNETLY ALL OF THIS HAPPEN WHEN MY WARRANTY EXPIRED BY 1000 MILES. I THOUGHT FORD WOULD BE UNDERSTANDING BUT UNFORTUNETLY THEY DIDNT GIVE A RATS BEHIND. SO NOW IM STUCK WITH A "DEPENDABLE" CAR WITH A CRAPPED OUT TRANSMISSION. THANK YOU FORD YOU ALWAYS MAKE GOOD CARS (SARCASM BY THE WAY) NEXT TIME ILL GET A REAL DEPENDABLE CAR LIKE HONDA OR TOYOTA. CAR HAS MANY ISSUES IN REGARDS TO THE BRAKING SYSTEM. CAR HAS BEEN TO THE SHOP ON MORE THAN 10 OCCASIONS. THE FRONT BRAKES HAVE BEEN REPLACED 2 TIMES IN 3 MONTHS. FINALLY I WAS TOLD MY MASTER CYLINDER WAS BAD. IT APPERENTLY WAS REPLACED, WHEN I DROVE THE CAR AFTER THIS REPAIR MY BRAKES 'WENT TO THE FLOOR' I ALSMOST RAMMED INTO ANOTHER CAR. THE BRAKES ARE COMPLETLEY MESSED UP AND A SAFETY DANGER. I WAS TOLD BY BRIAN THE SERVICE ADVISOR AT TITUS-WILL FORD THAT MY BRAKES ARE SAFE, HOWEVER HE WOULD NOT BACK IT IN WRITING. THIS SHOP REFUSED TO SERVICE MY VEHICLE IN REGARDS TO THIS ISSUE ACCORDING TO THEM NOTHING IS WRONG. SO BEWARE IN TACOMA, I HAVE UNSAFE BRAKES. I HAVE BEEN IN CONTACT WITH FORD AND THEY ARE USELESS ALSO. *AK
I HAVE A FORD FOCUS SE 2001 AND THERE IS A DESIGN FLAW IN THE FRONT BRAKE PADS. THE PADS ARE NOT SUFFICIENT ENOUGH TO SUPPORT THE WEIGHT OF THIS VEHICLE, THEREFORE THE BRAKES ARE WEARING AT A RAPID RATE IN 8 TO 10,000 MILES. I HAD AN ACCIDENT IN JULY OF 2003 BECAUSE THE BRAKES WORE ALMOST GONE AND I COULD NOT STOP IN TIME AND HIT A VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME. THE BRAKES ON THE FOCUS NEED TO BE INVESTIGATED AND I AM SURE I AM NOT THE ONLY OWNER WHO IS HAVING PROBLEMS. SO FAR FORD HAS REPLACED MY BRAKES TWICE AND MY CAR HAS 33,000 MILES. NOW THEY ARE LYING TO ME AND TELLING ME MY BRAKES ARE FINE AND I KNOW THAT THEY NEED TO BE REPLACED, BUT THEY WON'T DO IT AGAIN UNDER WARRANTY. I HAVE SERVICE RECORDS TO PROVE THAT THE BRAKES HAVE BEEN A PROBLEM SINCE I BOUGHT THE CAR. PLEASE INVESTIGATE THIS PROBLEM THESE SHOULD BE RECALLED AND FORD NEEDS TO DESIGN A BRAKE PAD TO SUPPORT THE WEIGHT OF THIS VEHICLE. THIS IS A SERIOUS ISSUE AND I COULD NOT PROVE MY ACCIDENT WAS A RESULT OF THESE FAULTY BRAKES.*AK
ENGINE STALLS AND POWER LOSS AND BRAKES NOT RESPONDING RESULTED IN REAR END COLLISION WITH ANOTHER VEHICLE. *AK
CAR LOST FUEL PRESSURE AND WOULD NOT DRIVE. AFTER WAITING UNTIL CAR COOLED DOWN CAR WILL START AND DRIVE. CAR ONLY HAS THIS PROBLEM WHEN THE TEMPATURE IS ABOVE 90 DEGREES.*AK
WHILE DRIVING AND MAKING A LEFT VEHICLE MAKES NOISE AND IS HARD TO CONTROL THE STEERING. DEALER NOTIFIED. *AK
CONSUMER STATES THAT WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED AND WITHOUT WARNING VEHICLE WILL STALL, AND IT WILL BE HARD TO START UP THE VEHICLE AGAIN. DEALER NOTIFIED. *AK
WHILE DRIVING AND TURNING TO THE LEFT STEERING WHEEL MAKES NOISE. DEALER INSPECTED SEVERAL TIMES AND COULD NOT DUPLICATE OR CORRECT THE PROBLEM. *AK
MY 2001 FORD FOCUS ZX3 HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE FUEL PUMP PICKUP BEING CLOGGED WITH DEBRIS FROM THE INSIDE OF THE GAS TANK. THE CAR WAS STALLING AND LOSING POWER ON RIGHT HAND TURNS. DEALER REFUSED TO FIX, SO I DID IT MYSELF; FOUND THE FUEL PUMP SCREENS VERY CLOGGED. CAR RUNS FINE NOW. *PH
THE CONSUMERS VEHICLE REAR ENDED ANOTHER VEHICLE AT 5 MPH AND BOTH AIR BAGS DEPLOYED SHATTERING THE WINDSHIELD. THE POLICE STATED THAT THE AIR BAGS SHOULD NOT HAVE DEPLOYED BECAUSE THERE WAS NO DAMAGE TO THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE. *AK *NLM
THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED FOR ABOUT FIFTEEN MINUTES IN FRONT OF A RESIDENCE AND IT CAUGHT ON FIRE. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE. THE PROBLEM WAS NOT DETERMINED. VEHICLE CANNOT BE USED. *AK
SIX MONTHS AGO I HAD MY 2001 FORD FOCUS IN THE SHOP. THE COMPLAINT WAS THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON AND I WAS HAVING TROUBLE STARTING MY CAR. IT WAS LIKE THE CAR HAD RUN OUT OF GAS AND IT WOULDN'T START TILL YOU FILLED IT UP. I COULDN'T LET MY GAS GO BELOW 1/4 OF A TANK. THE CAR DEALERSHIP HADN'T FOUND ANY PROBLEMS AT THE TIME BUT OVER THE NEXT SIX MONTHS IT KEPT GETTING WORSE. EVENTUALLY YOU HAD TO HAVE AT LEAST 1/2 A TANK OF GAS IN ORDER TO NOT HAVE A PROBLEM STARTING IT AND IT BEGAN SPUTTERING AND BOGGING OUT. EVENTUALLY IT GOT TO THE POINT THAT EVEN WITH A FULL TANK OF GAS THE CAR WOULD NOT RUN RIGHT MEANING IT BOGGED OUT AND JERKED AND SPUTTER EVERYTIME YOU PUSHED THE GAS TO GO UP HILLS OR WHEN YOU FIRST PULLED OUT SOMEWHERE. IT FINALLY LET ME SITTING IN PITTSBURGH GOING THROUGH OAKLAND I STARTED TO PULL OUT FROM A STOP LIGHT AND WHEN YOU GAVE IT GAS IT JUST MADE ALL THESE FUNNY SOUNDS AND IT TRIED TO MOVE BUT WOULDN'T THEN SHUT OFF RIGHT THERE IN TRAFFIC. I HAD IT TO THE SHOP AND THEY FOUND OUT THAT THE FUEL PUMP WENT BAD AND IN MY HOME TOWN THEY DON'T EVEN HAVE THE PART IN STOCK ANYMORE BECAUSE THEY HAVE CHANGED SO MANY OF THEM IN THE LAST FEW MONTHS.*AK
2001 FORD FOCUS BUCKED SEVERELY SEVERAL TIMES THEN LOST POWER AT 65 MPH ON INTERSTATE IN TRAFFIC. I WAS ABLE TO MOVE TO BREAKDOWN LANE FROM PASSING LANE AND CONTINUED AT A MAXIMUM OF 30 MPH OFF THE INTERSTATE, CAR WAS STILL "BUCKING". THE CAR THEN COMPLETELY LOST POWER, UNABLE TO ACCELERATE ON BRIDGE. COASTED TO SIDE OF ROAD, CAR WOULD NOT RESTART. TOWED TO DEALERSHIP. SERVICE DEPT ADVISED THEY COULD NOT RECREATE THE SITUATION AND NO CODES SHOWED ON COMPUTER. MECHANICS BEST GUESS WAS IT WAS A FUEL PUMP FAILURE. CAR HAS 57000 MILES, IS STILL UNDER EXTENDED WARRANTY PLAN. FORD REFUSES TO REPLACE FUEL PUMP. CAR IS BEING RETURNED TO ME WITH INSTRUCTIONS TO RETURN IT IF PROBLEM OCCURS AGAIN. I'M FILING THIS COMPLAINT BECAUSE THIS SEEMS TO BE A VERY SERIOUS PROBLEM TO LEAVE "UNDIAGNOSED" AND HAVE SEEN A NUMBER OF SIMILAR COMPLAINTS ON THIS WEBSITE. FORD NEEDS TO DO SOMETHING TO RECTIFY THIS PROBLEM.*AK
I HAVE A 2001 FORD FOCUS ZX3, AND JUST HAD TO HAVE THE FUEL PUMP REPLACED. UPON INVESTIGATION ON THE INTERNET, I FOUND THAT THIS IS A COMMON AILMENT FOR FORD FOCUSES, AND IS CURRENTLY UNDER INVESTIGATION AT NHTSA AS A FAULTY PART. I WISH TO ADD MY COMPLAINT TO THE DATA ACCUMULATING ON THIS SUBJECT, IN HOPES THAT FORD DOES A RECALL FOR THIS MECHANICAL FLAW. MY DEALERSHIP SIMPLY TOLD ME THAT THE PROBLEM WAS THAT THE 'FUEL PUMP WENT BAD' AND NEEDED REPLACING. *NLM
I HAVE 22,000 MILES ON MY 2001 FORD FOCUS, I HAVE JUST BEEN INFORMED THAT I NEED TO REPLACE THE BRAKES AND ROTORS. THAT'S RIDICULOUS FOR SUCH LOW MILES. AFTER A LITTLE RESEARCH, I SEE THAT THERE IS A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT AGAINST FORD. THE LAWSUIT IS FOR EXACTLY MY PROBLEM. *NLM

FUEL PUMP PROBLEMS RELATED TO 2001 FORD FOCUS ZX3. BEGAN TO STUMBLE WHEN AT 1/4 TANK AND TURNING RIGHT AND HAS PROGRESSED THAT AT ANY TIME IM AT 3/4 TANK OR LESS I CAN NOT TURN RIGHT AT ANY REASONABLE SPEED WITHOUT FUEL CUT. THIS IS RELATED TO A KNOWN DEFECT OF FUEL TANK LINER THAT THEY REFUSE TO WARRANTY OR RECALL. HAS LEFT ME MANY TIMES MERGING ONTO HIGHWAY WITH NEARLY STALLED ENGINE. FORD IS AWARE AND ISSUES BULLETIN TO DEALERSHIPS BUT REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE PROBLEM TO PUBLIC. *JB
AFTER CAR HAS WARMED UP FOR 30 MINUTES APPROX. IT RESTARTS AFTER TURNING ENGINE OFF BUT WILL NOT IDLE ON IT'S OWN. THE DRIVER MUST KEEP THERE FOOT ON THE GAS PEDAL AT ALL TIMES, EXCEPT WHEN CAR IS MOVING AND ENGINE IS ENGAGED. THE CAR HAS A STANDARD TRANSMISSION. THIS DOESN'T HAPPEN EVERYTIME. BUT AFTER CAR HAS WARMED UP AND HAS HAD THE ENGINE TURNED OFF 2 OR 3 TIMES THIS ACCORES. IF THE ENGINE IS ALLOWED TO COOL DOWN FOR 15 MIN. TO 45 MIN. THE CAR WILL IDLE AGAIN. THE TIME IS DEPENDENT ON THE OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE. *TR
FRONT BRAKE HAS A SQUEAKING NOISE WHILE APPLYING THE BRAKES WITH A JERK. *AK
THE LEFT SIDE BUMPER PLASTIC RATTLED AND THE TAIL PIPE HIT THE BUMPER WHICH MADE A RATTLE NOISE. THE DEALER PLACED A RUBBER SPACER BETWEEN THE BUMPER AND THE BODY, THE BUMPER WAS NOW LOWER AND HITTING THE TAIL PIPE EVEN MORE BECAUSE OF THE RUBBER SPACER, WHICH WAS FALLING OUT. THE SCREWS WHICH HELD THE BUMPER AND BODY TOGETHER WERE VISIBILE. FINALLY THE CONSUMER WAS TOLD IT WAS THE DESIGN OF THE VEHICLE AND THE PROBLEM COULD NOT BE CORRECTED. *SCC *JB
THE DEALER CHANGED THE FRONT AND REAR BRAKE 3 TIMES , THE ROTORS. TWICE, HOWEVER THE PROBLEM CONTINUED. CONSUMER INDICATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY. MULTIPLE PROBLEMS WITH VEHICLE. *AK *CB. THE HUB CAP WAS LOOSE AND FELL OFF, THE CLOCK SPRING WAS REPLACED, THE TURN AND BRAKE LIGHTS WERE INOPERATIVE, THE EXHAUST SYSTEM MADE A LOUD NOISE, THE DEALER REPLACED THE PIPE AND GASKET, THE SEAT BELT BUCKLE WAS REPLACED, BECAUSE THE SEAT BELT LIGHT FAILED TO GO OUT. *JB
FIRST, MY REAR PASSENGER WINDOW WOULD NOT SCROLL UP AND DOWN. THIS IS AFTER HAVING MY 2001 FORD FOCUS FOR 2 YEARS. I RARELY USE MY REAR WINDOWS. I THOUGHT IT WAS A MOTOR PROBLEM. WHEN I OPENED THE DOOR AND CHECKED BY MYSELF, I WAS SHOCKED TO SEE THAT IT WAS NOT THE MOTOR BUT THE REGULATOR WHICH IS MADE OF PLASTIC. I THINK FORD DID THIS INTENTIONALLY. AFTER A FEW MONTHS, THE DRIVERS SIDE REAR WINDOW ALSO WOULD NOT SCROLL UP AND DOWN. I IMMEDIATELY KNEW WHAT THE PROBLEM IS, THE PLASTIC REGULATOR. SO WHAT I DO IS TO PULL THE WINDOW UP AND HOLD IT TO THE FRAME USING A PIECE OF PAPER. TO FIX THIS PROBLEM WOULD COST ME $300 A PIECE. THAT IS $600 TOTAL TO PUT IN ANOTHER PLASTIC THAT WILL EVENTUALLY FAIL. TO MAKE MATTERS WORSE, TODAY MY FRONT PASSENGERS SIDE WINDOW ALSO WENT DOWN. SAME PROBLEM. WHITE PLASTIC REGULATOR. THAT PUTS MY TOTAL COST OF FIXING THIS TO $1200. I HAVE DECIDED NOT TO BUY A FORD AGAIN IF THIS PROBLEM CANNOT BE FIXED. THEY NEED TO RECALL THE FORD FOCUS EXHIBITING THIS PROBLEMS AND FIX IT. IT IS SIMPLE, STOP USING THE PLASTIC AS THE REGULATOR. THE FUNNY THING IS THAT YOU CAN'T PURCHASE THE REGULATOR ON ITS OWN. YOU HAVE TO BUY IT PLUS THE MOTOR WHICH I DO NOT NEED. EVERY FORD FOCUS OWNER IS HAVING THIS PROBLEM. MY CAR IS PAID OFF AND I DON'T THINK I WILL BE LOOKING AT A FORD AGAIN IF THIS IS NOT RESOLVED. *TR
PROBLEMS SIMILAR TO EA02-022. STALLS (ENIGINE SHUTS OFF) WHILE DRIVING ON FREEWAY OR AT ANY SPEED. FAILS TO START IN DRIVEWAY OR PARKING LOT, THEN CAR GETS TOWED TO REPAIR SHOP AND CAR WORKS FINE WITH NO PROBLEM FOUND. REPLACED FUEL FILTER WITH NO EFFECT ON PROBLEM. VERIFIED SPARK WORKS AND RELAYS ARE CLOSING WHEN CAR WOULD NOT START. HAPPENS VERY FREQUENTLY. ABOUT ONCE PER WEEK. CAR NOW HAS 58,000 MILES ON IT AND PROBLEM STARTED TO OCCUR AROUND 32,000 MILES. PLEASE FIX THIS IS DANGEROUS!! STALLS OCCUR WITHOUT WARNING. STALLING THIS OFTEN MAKES THIS PROBLEM HIGHER RISK THAN AN OCCASIONAL STALL.*AK

IGNITION SWITCH FROZE AND WOULD NOT TURN. HAD TO BE TOWED TO DEALER AT COST OF $50. SWITCH HAD TO BE DRILLED OUT AND REPLACED ALONG WITH AN INNER PART AT A COST OF AROUND $250. CAR HAS 54,000 MILES. *NLM
