2005 FORD FREESTYLE 53,000 MILES EXPERIENCING LOSS OF POWER WITH WRENCH LIGHT ON INSTRUMENT PANEL ILLUMINATING WHILE DRIVING. FIRST TRIP TO DEALER, THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT REPLACED AIR FILTER INDICATING THAT THE FILTER HAD SLIPPED OUT OF THE HOUSING AND WAS BLOCKING AIR FLOW. WITHIN 2 WEEKS WE HAVE DROPPED THE CAR OFF FOR A SECOND VISIT FOR SAME POWER FAILURE ISSUE. WHEN WILL FORD ISSUE A RECALL FOR THIS WIDESPREAD MECHANICAL PROBLEM? HOW MANY CRASHES, OR DEATHS HAVE RESULTED FROM THIS ISSUE? *TR
THROTTLE BODY FAILURE VEHICLE BEGAN LURCHING FORWARD WHILE IN DRIVE WITH BRAKE APPLIED THIS WAS ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS ESPECIALLY AT DRIVE THROUGH FOOD ESTABLISHMENTS. I REPLACED THE THROTTLE BODY FOR $653.00 AT MY LOCAL MECHANIC. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 FORD FREESTYLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 35 MPH THE VEHICLE SURGED FORWARD AND SHIFTED INTO FAIL SAFE MODE WHICH REDUCED THE POWER OF THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT DROVE THE VEHICLE TO AN AUTO RETAIL STORE FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING AND THE RESULTS INDICATED THAT THE THROTTLE BODY FAILED. THE NEXT DAY THE VEHICLE SURGED AND SHIFTED INTO FAIL SAFE MODE AGAIN. THE CONTACT HAS NOT TAKEN THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER BUT NOTICED NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ON THE THROTTLE BODY. THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER AND SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS OUT OF WARRANTY THE MANUFACTURER COULD NOT PROVIDE ASSISTANCE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 91,346.
2005 FORD FREESTYLE FOR 2 YRS HAVING A PROBLEM WITH FOOT BEING ON BRAKE AND THE THROTTLE WANTING TO GO CAUSING CAR TO SURGE AHEAD - NO ACCIDENT YET - THIS IS OFF AND ON - ALSO IF TURNING HARD WILL SURGE - 2X WENT INTO SAFE ENGINE MODE - CODE P061B AND P2106 THEN AFTER PARKING CAR FOR AWHILE IT WILL BE FINE - ALSO REAR BRAKES MAKING NOISES AND HAVE TO BE REPLACE EVERY FEW THOUSAND MILES - CAR SURGES AND ACCELERATES ON ITS OWN MOSTLY WHEN STOPPED WITH FOOT ON BRAKE ALSO DOES THIS IN REVERSE - CAR HAS ABOUT 120,000 MILES ON IT AT THIS TIME - VERY DANGEROUS - CANNOT AFFORD TO HAVE THROTTLE BODY REPLACED - THIS HAPPENS EVERY DAY PRETTY MUCH - SOME DAYS ONLY ONCE - THIS PAST WEEK EXTREMELY OFTEN AND WENT IN FAIL SAFE MODE - THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL ON THIS DANGEROUS PROBLEM - I HAVE READ MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS - VERY DANGEROUS. *TR
CVT TRANSMISSION VIBRATING EXCESSIVELY AND MAKING LOUD NOISE WHEN SHIFTING OUT OF PARK. CVT TRANSMISSION FAILURE AT 67,000 MILES. HAD TO REPLACE WITH A FORD REMANUFACTURED TRANSMISSION. *TR
THIS CAR HAS AN APPARENTLY WELL-KNOWN ISSUE WITH THE THROTTLE BODY FAILING, CAUSING: A) SUDDEN UNCONTROLLED ACCELERATION FROM A STOP, AND B) SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER WHEN TRAVELING DOWN THE ROAD AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. MY WIFE EXPERIENCED BOTH PROBLEMS YESTERDAY. FIRST, WITH MY WIFE'S FOOT ON THE BRAKE, THE FREESTYLE LUNGED FORWARD AND ALMOST REAR-ENDED ANOTHER CAR THAT HAD CHILDREN LOADING INTO IT, WHILE IN SCHOOL CARPOOL LINE. THEN, WHILE MAKING HER WAY IMMEDIATELY TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP -- WITH MY TWO CHILDREN -- THIS UNCONTROLLED LUNGING FROM A DEAD STOP CONTINUED AT INTERSECTIONS; AND WHILE TRAVELING AT SPEED, IN TRAFFIC, THE CAR WOULD SUDDENLY LOSE ALL POWER. THE SUDDEN LUNGE MAKES IT LIKELY YOU'LL HIT A PEDESTRIAN OR REAR-END THE CAR IN FRONT OF YOU; THE SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER MAKES IT LIKELY YOU'LL BE THE RECIPIENT OF A REAR-END COLLISION. THE REPAIR IS COSTING US $730. IT'S THE THROTTLE BODY, OF COURSE. AND I'VE ASKED THE DEALERSHIP TO GIVE ME BACK THE OLD PART, SO YES, I SHOULD HAVE THAT AVAILABLE WHEN I GET THE CAR BACK. *** IMPORTANT *** THIS IS A WELL-KNOWN ISSUE TO BOTH FORD AND THE ODI OF THE NHTSA. THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF MATCHING, PUBLICLY FILED COMPLAINTS DOCUMENTING THIS CHILLING SAFETY ISSUE IN THIS VERY SAME ODI DATABASE TO WHICH I AM SUBMITTING THIS MIRROR COMPLAINT. WHEN SHOULD WE EXPECT TO SEE SOME ACTION FROM THE ODI/NHTSA AND/OR FORD ON THIS???????? WHEN AT A DEAD STOP OR ACCELERATING SLOWLY (AS IN PULLING INTO OR OUT OF A PARKING SPACE), THE ENGINE WILL SUDDENLY SURGE, REQUIRING HARD BRAKING. THIS HAS ALMOST CAUSED ACCIDENTS AT MULTIPLE TIMES. THIS HAS BEEN A PROBLEM THIS ENTIRE SUMMER. THE 9/2/10 DATE WAS WHEN IT WAS PARTICULARLY BAD AND PERSISTENT. OMINOUSLY, THE TYPICAL SETTING DESCRIBES THE SITUATION WHEN IN THE LINE OF CARS WHEN PICKING UP OUR DAUGHTERS AT SCHOOL. *TR
2005 FORD FREESTYLE SEL HAS LOST POWER AND TURNED OFF COMPLETELY TWICE. BOTH TIMES, I TURNED THE AC AND RADIO OFF AND IT STARTED BACK UP IMMEDIATELY. I HAVE ALSO EXPERIENCED THE SUDDEN SURGE OTHERS HAVE DESCRIBED WHEN SLOWING AT AN INTERSECTION FOR A STOP SIGN AND IT DOES REQUIRE A QUICK HARD BREAK TO KEEP FROM ENTERING THE INTERSECTION. BOTH OF THESE EVENTS ARE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. *TR
I OWN A 2005 FORD FREESTYLE. WE HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING A PROBLEM WITH OUR CAR GOING INTOFAIL SAFE MODE. THIS HAS HAPPEN BACKING UP AFTER FIRST STARTING OUT, BUT HAS ALSO OCCURRED COMING TO A STOP AT INTERSECTIONS. THE VEHICLE LUNGES FORWARD OR BACKWARD AND THEN DISPLAYS THE FAIL SAFE. IN FAIL SAFE, THE VEHICLE WILL NOT ACCELERATE. THE VEHICLE MUST BE TURNED OFF AND RESTARTED TO CORRECT THE CONDITION. THE "LUNGING" AND/OR LACK OF ACCELERATION WHEN NEEDED IN SAFE MODE ARE DANGEROUS SITUATIONS. I HAVE NOT YET SOUGHT REPAIRS. THIS ISSUE HAS OCCURRED QUITE OFTEN LATELY. I WILL BE FORCED TO SEEK PROFESSIONAL ASSISTANCE AS IT BECOMES PROGRESSIVELY WORSE. I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE NEW IN MARCH 2006. THE MILEAGE IS NOW 54,280. THIS CONDITION FIRST BEGAN WITHIN THE PAST 6 MONTHS. *TR
2005 FORD FREESTYLE-THE AC COMPRESSOR AND DRIER WAS REPLACED AT ABOUT 93,000 MILES THROUGH THE EXTENDED WARRANTY. IT ONLY COST ME 75.00 . NO BIG DEAL RIGHT. THE TOTAL BILL WAS NEARLY 1600.00 FOR THE WARRANTY COMPANY. NOW AT 125,000 MILES, IT HAS GONE OUT AGAIN. NO WARRANTY. I'VE TO PAY. IT IS GOING TO COST ABOUT 1600.00. NOW THEY CAN'T FIND A COMPRESSOR AND ARE BACK ORDERED UNTIL APRIL OF 2011. I HAVE NEVER HAD A COMPRESSOR GO OUT ON ANY OTHER CAR I HAVE OWNED. APPROXIMATELY 20 CARS IN THIRTY FIVE YEARS OF DRIVING. SEVERAL WITH OVER 250,000 MILES. IF AC COMPR. ARE ON BACK ORDER, MANY MUST BE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM. I NEED HELP. THIS IS A RIP OFF. *TR

"FAIL SAFE ENGINE MODE" AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ONE BECAUSE OF IT- THEY INSIST THAT IT IS SAFE TO DRIVE (I DRIVE 75 MILES BACK AND FORTH TO WORK EVERYDAY). THE CAR LUNGES FORWARD OR BACKWARD DEPENDING IF YOU ARE IN DRIVE OR REVERSE. IT IS SO FAST YOU HAVE TO BRAKE WITH BOTH FEET AND PULL AGAINST STEERING WHEEL TO STOP CAR. CAR TRIPS INTO FAILSAFE MODE AFTER THIS HAPPENS (WOULD BE TOO LATE, YOU WOULD HAVE HIT SOMETHING BY THEN)DEALER SAYS IT IS THE BAD THROTTLE BODY. SEEMS TO BE A SYSTEMIC PROBLEM WITH FREESTYLE 2005-2007? VERY DANGEROUS A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE SOMEONE IS RUN OVER OR KILLED WITH VEHICLE. *TR
WHEN AIR TEMPERATURE IS HOT THE CAR TENDS TO JUMP A FOOT IN MOVING FORWARD FROM A STOPPED POSITION OR IDLE POSITION OR BACK A FOOT IF MOVING BACKWARD FROM A STOPPED OR IDLE POSITION. *TR
2005 FORD FREESTYLE LIMITED AWD, APPROX 80,000 MILES. WITH FOOT ON BRAKE, CAR SURGES OR LUNGES WHEN NOT PRESSING ON THE ACCELERATOR. THIS IS A DANGEROUS CONDITION THAT NEEDS A RECALL FIX PUT IN PLACE. NOTICED THAT THE RPM GAUGE JUMPS UP ABOUT 200 TO 300 RPM, ENOUGH TO OVERCOME THE BRAKES. THIS HAPPENS IN FORWARD OR REVERSE. THIS IS DANGEROUS TO PEDESTRIANS AND WHEN ENTERING INTERSECTIONS. THIS HAPPENS INTERMITTENTLY, AND HAS OCCURRED WEEKLY OVER THE LAST 3 SUMMER MONTHS FOR US. THE CONSEQUENCES OF FAILURE ARE THAT THE VEHICLE IS NOT UNDER DRIVER CONTROL FOR ABOUT 4 SECONDS, SURGING THE VEHICLE FORWARD OR REVERSE. TO CORRECT THE FAILURE, I HAVE REPLACED THE AIR FILTER (NO EFFECT) AND INSPECTED THE MAF (CLEAN), DONE SOME INTERNET RESEARCH, AND WILL BE CONTACTING THE FORD DEALER. THE BEST 3RD PARTY DESCRIPTION I HAVE SEEN IS THAT THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE FAILS WHEN VEHICLE IS PLACED IN GEAR WITH THE A/C ON. IN FAILURE MODE, THE THROTTLE HAS BEEN SEEN TO OPEN AT 16 TO 18% WITH NO FOOT ON THE ACCELERATOR. OTHERS SAY FORD HAS A NEWLY DESIGNED THROTTLE PART THAT IS HARD TO GET AND COSTS $800. SOME SAY A COMPUTER FIRMWARE UPDATE IS ALSO NEEDED WITH THE NEW PART TO CORRECT THIS DANGEROUS CONDITION. *TR
THE VEHICLE WOULD EXPERIENCE INTERMITTENT LOSS OF THE ELECTRICAL TO THE GAUGES AND INTERIOR LIGHTING. THE GAUGES WOULD SWEEP TO ZERO AND THEN MOMENTARILY SWEEP BACK. THE LENGTH OF THE LOSS OF ELECTRICAL IS INCREASING WITH EACH INTERMITTENT FAILURE. TWICE NOW THE VEHICLE HAS ALSO LOST ACCELERATION WHEN PULLING OUT OF AN INTERSECTION CAUSING A POTENTIAL COLLISION CONDITION. THE LAST TIME THIS HAPPENED IT ALSO OCCURRED WITH A LOSS OF ELECTRICAL TO THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER AND INTERIOR LIGHTING. THIS IS A POTENTIAL SERIOUS CONDITION AS THE VEHICLE MAY HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN A COLLISION DUE TO THE LOSS OF POWER. THE VEHICLE IS CURRENTLY WITH THE FORD DEALER UNDERGOING DIAGNOSTICS. *TR
PURCHASED A 2005 FORD FREESTYLE TWO YEARS AGO. THIS PAST YEAR (2010) HAVE EXPERIENCED SURGING WHEN PLACING MY CAR IN REVERSE- CONSISTENTLY HAPPENS EVERY TIME I START MY CAR AND PLACE INTO REVERSE. THIS PAST WEEK (8.26.2010) I ALMOST REAR ENDED A CAR WHILE WAITING AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT WHEN THE CAR STARTED SURGING (RPMS WERE GOING UP & DOWN) UNEXPECTEDLY. IT SURGED 4 TIMES THEN THE FAIL SAFE LIGHTS CAME ON AND THE ENGINE CUT OFF. I PUSHED THE CAR OFF THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. AFTER A FEW MOMENTS I RESTARTED- CAR AGAIN SURGED WHILE IN REVERSE AND DROVE IT TO THE DEALERSHIP. AWAITING RESPONSE OF THE PROBLEM. AM VERY AFRAID I WILL END UP BACKING INTO SOMEONE OR REAR ENDING A CAR DUE TO THE OVER REVVING WHILE SITTING IDLE. *TR
FOR THE PAST 3 WEEKS, MY 2005 FORD FREESTYLE HAS BEEN LUNGING FORWARD IN DRIVE W/O MY CONTROL. IN REVERSE, IT LUNGES BACKWARDS. I HAVE SEEN NUMEROUS BLOGS ABOUT THE SAME PROBLEM W/FORD. SOME PEOPLE HAVE ACTUALLY HIT BLDGS & PEOPLE! THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS THAT FORD HAS NOT MADE A RECALL. THIS IS A COMPLETE SAFETY ISSUE. ALSO, AFTER THE CAR LURCHES, IT DIES - WHICH CAN HAPPEN ON A HIGHWAY AS WELL. FORD WILL NOT DO ANYTHING TO HELP. THEY TOLD ME ITS MY RESPONSIBILITY TO GET A REPLACEMENT CAR WHILE I WAIT MONTHS FOR THE PART TO COME IN FROM THE NATIONAL BACKORDER. I OWN A 2005 FORD FREESTYLE AWD WITH A 3.0L V6. I HAVE HAD TO PARK MY VEHICLE AS IT HAS BECOME UNSAFE FOR MY FAMILY TO USE. WHILE DRIVING AT SLOW SPEEDS THE VEHICLE WILL ABRUPTLY SURGE IN DRIVE OR REVERSE. NOW WHEN THIS HAPPENS THE VEHICLE DIES WHERE EVER IT OCCURS. I HAVE KEPT THE VEHICLE FROM HITTING OTHER CARS MULTIPLE TIMES AND YESTERDAY WAS THE FINAL STRAW. I ALMOST HIT A KID AT MY CHILD'S SCHOOL. WAITING IN LINE TO PICK UP MY CHILDREN FROM SCHOOL THE CAR SURGED SO BAD THAT THE BREAKS WOULD NOT STOP IT. I HAD TO THROW IT INTO PARK. I UNDERSTAND THE VOLVO CARS THAT SHARE THE SAME PART HAVE ALREADY BEEN RECALLED. TOYOTA HAD TO EXPLAIN THEMSELVES IN WASHINGTON FOR AN ISSUE NOT UNLIKE MINE. THE FIRST DOCUMENTED COMPLAINT ON MY CAR WAS IN THE SECOND MONTH OF OWNERSHIP. I WAS TOLD THAT UNTIL THE ISSUE BECOMES BAD ENOUGH TO REPLICATE THERE WAS NO WAY TO FIX THE PROBLEM. NOW I HAVE A BROKEN MOTOR MOUNT FROM THE ISSUE AT MY CHILDREN'S SCHOOL AND THE DRIVETRAIN IS MAKING NOISES. GUESS WHAT AS SOON AS MY 3YEAR WARRANTY WAS UP THE ISSUE BECAME MORE REGULAR. NOW IT IS AT MY COST TO FIX AN ISSUE I REPORTED WITHIN THE FIRST MONTH OF OWNERSHIP. THAT IS JUST WRONG! *TR
2005 FORD FREESTYLE. 3 DIFFERENT INCIDENTS WHEN THE CAR WAS STOPPED, LURCHED FORWARD AND THEN THE DASHBOARD LIGHT CAME ON READING "ENGINE SAFE FAILED" TURNED CAR OFF AND RESTARTED. 3RD TIME IT HAPPENED THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT REMAINED ON WITH THE EMISSIONS LIGHT ON THE DASHBOARD. TOOK CAR TO DEALERSHIP TO BE SERVICED. WE ARE NOW TOLD THE THROTTLE BODY NEEDS TO BE REPLACED AND THE ELECTRIC SYSTEM NEEDS TO BE REBOOTED. THE CAR ONLY HAS 58,000 MILES AND WE PURCHASED ONLY 30 DAYS AGO USED. *TR
I OWN A 2005 FORD FREESTYLE AND OVER THE PAST 6 MONTHS IT HAS SURGED UNEXPLAINABLY A DOZEN PLUS TIMES, TO A POINT WHERE MY WIFE IS AFRAID TO DRIVE IT. THIS HAS HAPPENED BOTH SOON AFTER THE CAR HAS BEEN STARTED AND, WITH A FOOT ON THE BRAKE, THE CAR IS PUT INTO D OR R. THANKFULLY THE CAR BRAKE WAS APPLIED. IT HAS ALSO HAPPENED TO ME WHILE BRAKING AT SPEEDS OF 40+ MPH AND HAS MADE IT DIFFICULT TO STOP TO A POINT I HAD TO PPUT THE CAR IN N TO SLOW IT. I HAVE 4 KIDS AND THESE UNEXPLAINED SURGES SURELY ARE OF GREAT CONCERN. I BROUGHT THE CAR TO THE LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID OT WAS THE AFTERMARKET AIRFILTER AND THAT THEY COULDN'T REPLACATE THE PROBLEM. *TR

2005 FORD FREESTYLE LUNGED BACKWARD WHEN PUT IN GEAR. EVEN WITH THE BRAKE APPLIED THE CAR MOVED A FEW FEET. THIS HAS OCCURRED ON THREE SEPARATE OCCASIONS. FORTUNATELY, THERE WAS NO PERSON OR OBJECT IN MY PATH. THE CAR WAS TAKEN TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP AND THE THROTTLE BODY WAS REPLACED. THE CAR HAS 60,700 MILES ON THE ODOMETER. *TR
THE VEHICLE LUNGES AT LOW SPEEDS. THIS ACT HAPPENS AT RANDOM TIMES AND HAS OCCURRED ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS.
THE VEHICLE ON A VERY HOT DAY 95 DEGREES OUT WITH THE A/C ON HIGH WAS PUT INTO REVERSE WITH FOOT ON THE BRAKE AND THE CAR SURGED BACKWARDS AND WENT INTO SAFETY MODE. HAD TO DRIVE THE CAR HOME IN SAFETY MODE. MY WIFE SAYS IT HAPPENED A FEW TIMES TO HER ALSO. THE UPPER MOTOR MOUNT ON THE ENGINE HAS TOTALLY FELL APART, THE RUBBER BUSHING DRIED OUT AND IS GONE. CALLED FORD AND THEY TOLD ME THE PART IS $230.00. *TR
AT SLOW PARKING LOT MANEUVER SPEEDS VEHICLE LUNGES FORWARD, USUALLY ON A HOT DAY WITH AIR CONDITIONING ON. AFTER BRAKING ,CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON AND CAR IS SLUGGISH. *TR
WHILE SLOWING DOWN TO COME TO A STOP SIGN AT A CROSSWALK, MY 2005 FORD FREESTYLE'S ENGINE SUDDENLY STARTED RACING AND JERKING FORWARD! PRESSING DOWN AS HARD AS I COULD ON THE BRAKES DID NOT STOP THE CAR AND I HAD TO TURN IT OFF-IF SOMEONE HAD BEEN IN THE CROSSWALK, I WOULD HAVE HIT THEM! NEEDLESS TO SAY, I AM SCARED TO DRIVE MY CAR-IT IS BEING TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP. MILEAGE IS 46,318. *TR

FOR SEVERAL MONTHS WE HAD NOTICED THAT WHEN WE SHIFTED OUR VEHICLE INTO GEAR (FORWARD OR REVERSE) THE CAR WOULD LURCH FORWARD/BACKWARD AS WE CAME OFF THE BRAKE. SEVERAL WEEKS AGO, MY WIFE HAD THE VEHICLE IN LINE AT MY DAUGHTERS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DRIVEWAY WAITING TO PICK HER UP. AS SHE RELEASED PRESSURE ON THE BRAKE, THE VEHICLE UNEXPECTEDLY JUMPED FORWARD AND SHE NEEDED TO SLAM ON THE BRAKES TO STOP IT. THE ENGINE THEN WENT INTO "FAILSAFE MODE" AND RAN ON DIMINISHED PERFORMANCE UNTIL SHE WAS ABLE TO GET THE VEHICLE HOME. UPON EXAMINATION, IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE THROTTLE BODY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED ON A CAR WITH 65,000 MILES. IT WAS THE FAULTY THROTTLE BODY THAT HAD BEEN CAUSING THE CAR TO UNEXPECTEDLY LURCH/SURGE FORWARD. THE FORD DEALER WASTED NO TIME TELLING US THAT THE PART IS NOT COVERED UNDER THEIR EXTENDED POWER TRAIN WARRANTY WHICH I HAD ON THE VEHICLE. QUITE HONESTLY, THAT WAS NOT MY MAIN CONCERN AS A CHILD COULD HAVE EASILY BEEN HARMED BY THIS FAULTY THROTTLE BODY AND THE SYMPTOMS IT PRODUCES. THE DEALER REPLACED THE THROTTLE BODY AND CLEANED THE INJECTORS AND THE VEHICLE IS RUNNING BETTER. *TR
