I PURCHASED A 2006 FORD FREESTYLE IN APRIL 2014. IT HAS BEEN A GREAT TRUCK EXCEPT FOR THE FOLLOWING PROBLEM: WHEN DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEED, THE TRANSMISSION WILL SUDDENLY DROP INTO LOW GEAR. THE TRANSMISSION WILL NOT GO INTO ANY OTHER FORWARD GEAR WITHOUT SHIFTING INTO 'PARK', SHUTTING DOWN THE ENGINE, WAITING A MINUTE, AND RE-STARTING THE ENGINE. THIS CAN BE QUITE DANGEROUS ON A FAST MOVING FREEWAY! IN NORMAL CITY DRIVING, THE TRUCK RUNS FINE. ON LONG ROAD TRIPS, THE TRANSMISSION MAY DO THIS DOZENS OF TIMES BEFORE REACHING MY DESTINATION. IT IS ESPECIALLY A PROBLEM GOING UP LONG GRADES. IT CAN ALSO OCCUR WHEN OVERTAKING A SLOW-MOVING VEHICLE, DECELERATING, AND THEN SPEEDING BACK UP TO PASS. I CHECKED A FORUM FOR FREESTYLE PROBLEMS AND THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL INSTANCES OF OTHERS HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM. SOME PAID HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS TO HAVE THEIR TRANSMISSIONS FIXED, BUT THE PROBLEM PERSISTS. I TALKED TO A FORD MECHANIC ABOUT THE PROBLEM AND HE SAID THAT THE FREESTYLE (MADE ONLY IN 2006 AND 2007) HAS BEEN KNOWN TO HAVE PROBLEMS WITH THE CVT TRANSMISSIONS. HE SAID THERE IS A FAULTY TEMPERATURE SENSOR IN THE HOUSING OF THE TRANSMISSION THAT SENDS A PROBLEM SIGNAL TO THE COMPUTER THAT 'LOCKS THE TRANSMISSION INTO 'LIMP' MODE SO THE DRIVER CAN PULL OVER'. TO REPLACE IT REQUIRES BUYING THE HOUSING BECAUSE THE SENSOR IS PART OF THE HOUSING. BUT, THE COMPANY THAT MADE THE PART FOR FORD WENT OUT OF BUSINESS IN 2008. SO NO PART HAS BEEN AVAILABLE. I WAS TOLD THAT FORD HAD CONTRACTED ANOTHER COMPANY TO MAKE THE PART IN DECEMBER 2014 AND THE PART WOULD BE AVAILABLE IN JUNE 2015. IN JUNE, I CHECKED, AND NOW THE PART WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE UNTIL THE END OF 2015. I COMPLAINED ON THE FORD WEBSITE AND THEY DENY ANY PROBLEMS WITH THE TRANSMISSIONS SO NO RECALL HAS BEEN ISSUED. I CAN'T USE THE CRUISE CONTROL BECAUSE THE TRANSMISSION WILL GO OFF AND THE HIGH RPM CAN BLOW THE ENGINE.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 FORD FREESTYLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT ABLE TO BE RESTARTED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, WHO STATED THAT THE THROTTLE BODY SENSOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE DEFECT. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 147,000.
ON MARCH 15, 2014 WHILE DRIVING MY FORD FREESTYLE MY CAR COMPLETELY LOST POWER ON A 2 LANE STATE ROAD. I LOST POWER STEERING TO BE ABLE TO COMPLETELY GET MY CAR OFF THE ROAD. MY CHILD AND I WERE BROKE DOWN IN THE EVENING 40 MILES FROM HOME AND CARS WERE COMING FAST BEHIND US BARELY GETTING OVER EVEN THOUGH I HAD MY FLASHERS ON. I THOUGHT MAYBE MY GAS GAUGE STOPPED WORKING AND I WAS OUT OF GAS. BY THE GRACE OF GOD SOMEONE WE KNEW DROVE PAST US AND CAME BACK. THEY WENT AND GOT GAS FOR THE CAR THINKING MAYBE THE SAME ISSUE. NOTHING HELPED TO RESTART THE CAR. I HAD IT TOWED TO A MECHANIC THAT WE KNOW. HE PUT IT ON THE COMPUTER AND LOW AND BEHOLD IT'S THE THROTTLE BODY THAT NEEDS REPLACED, THE SAME PART THAT I UNDERSTOOD A YEAR BEFORE WAS REPLACED. I WAS TOLD IT WAS REPLACED BECAUSE THERE WAS A RECALL. I FIND OUT LATER IT WAS NOT REPLACED THAT IT WAS ACTUALLY A CUSTOMER SATISFACTION PROGRAM THAT I CALL IS A CYA FOR FORD. THE ONLY THING REQUIRED OF THE DEALERSHIP IS TO CLEAN AND REPROGRAM, SOMETHING ONLY A FORD DEALERSHIP CAN DO. I THOUGHT IT MUST BE UNDER WARRANTY CAUSE I HAD THE WORK DONE LESS THAN A YEAR. ONLY TO FIND OUT THAT FORD JUST AUTHORIZED A BAND AID FIX AND THAT MY THROTTLE BODY WOULD HAVE TO NOW BE REPLACED AND MY COST. PRIOR TO THIS MY CAR ALMOST LUNGED US INTO THE SIDE OF OUR HOUSE AS I WAS PULLING INTO OUR CARPORT. NOT THE NORMAL BREAKING THAT FORD TELLS NHTSA IN THEIR REPORT. I HAD TO PUT ALL MY MIGHT WITH BOTH FEET ON THE BREAKS TO STOP MY CAR FROM RUNNING INTO OUR HOUSE. ALSO NOT THE OTHER BS LIE FORD TELLS NHSTA THAT THE CAR LOOSES POWER BUT DOES NOT LOOSE CONTROL OF POWER STEERING AND BREAKS. ON BOTH OCCASIONS THAT I HAD A PROBLEM ALL OF WHAT FORD TELLS NHTSA IS NOT AN ISSUE IS DEFINITELY A SAFETY ISSUE. IM APPALLED THAT NHTSA HAS TO WAIT FOR SOMEONE TO DIE TO STOP BELIEVING THE BS LIES FORD IS GIVING THEM. DO SOMETHING.
I WAS DRIVING TO WORK AND THE CAR JUST STOPPED..IT WOULD NOT COME BACK ON, IT WOULD NOT TURN OVER WITH THE KEY, SO I HAD TO TOW IT HOME IT WILL MOVE 12 INCHES FORWARD AND BACKWARD. *TR

CAR THEN BEGAN TO MAKE NOISES OCCASIONALLY UPON START UP SIMILAR TO SOLENOID FAILURE & EXHIBIT "DIESELING" UPON IGNITION. WEATHER RELATED? THEN; 03/2014, ENTERED HIGHWAY, ACCELERATING TO 60/MPH - AT HALF MILE UP, CAR "SHUT DOWN"; RPM FLAT, SPEEDOMETER FLAT, PEDAL NON-REACTIVE, STEERING IMPAIRED, NO ELECTRICITY. COASTED TO DIVIDE IN HIGHWAY; CRANKED VEHICLE, TURNED & CROSSED TO SHOULDER; STOPPING & STARTING SEVERAL TIMES. MOVING 10/MPH TO SAFETY. STILL NO CODES. THOUGHT CLOG IN FUEL SYSTEM/ TRASH IN GAS. NEXT ATTEMPT TO DRIVE, FILLED TANK, NEW GAS; NO INDICATOR LIGHTS, NO PROBLEMS. THEN: INCIDENT:05/2014: CRANKED & BACKED OUT OF DRIVEWAY, PLACED G.SHIFT IN D.. NOTHING...NO MOVEMENT, RPM FLAT,SPEEDOMETER FLAT. SERVICE & ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. ROLLED BACK IN DRIVE, CAR SAT FOR SEVERAL DAYS. CRANKED IT, ENG, & SVC. LIGHTS STILL ON; DROVE TO PARTS STORE. CODES PRESENT INDICATE TB MALFUNCTION. PROBLEM NOT COVERED VIA PURCHASE AGREEMENT. FORD SAYS; "PROBLEM SOLVED". PART/ $500 PLUS LABOR.PAYMENT:$475/MO. AFRAID TO DRIVE IT. PUT CAR IN REVERSE & IT STARTED LUNGING. WRENCH LIGHT CAME ON WHICH INDICATES TRANSMISSION PROBLEM. TOOK VEHICLE TO FORD DEALER AND WAS INFORMED THERE WAS AN INTERNAL ELECTRICAL FAILURE AT THE THROTTLE BODY UNIT AND IT HAD TO BE REPLACED AT THE COST OF $1000.00. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE THE TECHNICIAN CLEANED THE THROTTLE BODY. THE REMEDY FAILED TO REPAIR THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 70,000.

THERE WERE NO WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE VEHICLE OPERATED NORMALLY ONCE THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED. THE FAILURE OCCURRED ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS. THE DEALER COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE FAILURE, BUT STATED THAT THE THROTTLE BODY NEEDED TO BE CLEANED AND THE COMPUTER NEEDED TO BE REPROGRAMMED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 118,000.
LOSS OF POWER WITH NO WARNING WHILE TRAVELING AT 50 MPH. "WRENCH" INDICATOR LIGHT COMES ON REPRESENTING "THROTTLE BODY" ACCORDING TO OWNER'S MANUAL. INDICATOR LIGHT FOR "TRACTION CONTROL" ALSO COMES ON. CAR IS TOWED TO NEARBY AUTO MECHANIC. NEXT DAY I AM TOLD THE "MEGATRONICS UNIT" MUST BE REPLACED AT A COST OF $1,775.00 (INCLUDES RECALIBRATING). ONE IS LOCATED AT A DEALER IN CHARLOTTE, N.C. THEY ARE ON BACK ORDER THROUGH FORD. AFTER THE UNIT IS INSTALLED, IT IS DETERMINED THAT THE TRANSMISSION IS NO LONGER FUNCTIONAL AND NEEDS REPLACING. ACCORDING TO THE MECHANIC, THERE WAS NO WAY TO KNOW THIS UNTIL THE MEGATRONICS UNIT WAS REPLACED. IN OTHER WORDS, IT COST $1,775.00 TO FIND OUT IT WOULD TAKE ANOTHER $4,500.00 - $6,000.00 (REBUILT VS. NEW) TO REPAIR. THAT IS MORE THAN THE VALUE OF THE CAR, IF IT WAS IN WORKING ORDER. THE CAR IS LESS THAN EIGHT YEARS OLD AND AVERAGED LESS THAN 10,000 MILES PER YEAR. IT HAS BEEN DRIVEN PRIMARILY BY MY WIFE, A RETIRED SCHOOL TEACHER, AND MOST OF THE MILEAGE HAS BEEN LOCAL DRIVING. THE $1,775.00 PART CAN'T BE RETURNED BECAUSE IT IS NOW CONSIDERED "USED", EVEN THOUGH IT HAS NOT MOVED ONE FOOT. I OWN A CAR THAT HAS NO TRADE-IN VALUE AND WILL MOST LIKELY END UP IN A JUNK YARD. THE MECHANIC TELLS ME THAT EVEN IF I WERE WILLING TO SPEND THE MONEY TO REPAIR IT, NO ONE WHO SPECIALIZES IN TRANSMISSIONS WANTS TO TOUCH IT BECAUSE THEY WORRY ABOUT A REPEAT OF THESE PROBLEMS AND DON'T WANT TO ISSUE ANY WARRANTY WITH IT. I HAVE HAD TO PURCHASE A VEHICLE WITH ABSOLUTELY NOTHING OF VALUE TO TRADE. MY WIFE AND I ARE BOTH IN OUT 60'S AND CERTAINLY DID NOT ANTICIPATE HAVING TO MAKE A PURCHASE OF THIS MAGNITUDE AT THIS POINT IN OUR LIVES. I DON'T THINK IT IS A STRETCH TO EXPECT THE VEHICLE TO HAVE GOTTEN WELL OVER 100,000 MILES BEFORE ANYTHING CLOSE TO A PROBLEM OF THIS MAGNITUDE OCCURRING. INSTEAD, IT GOT 74,342. *TR
AS OUTLINED IN THE CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT AGAINST FORD FILED IN CALIFORNIA, OUR CAR EXPERIENCED A "SUDDEN AND UNEXPECTED CVT TRANSMISSIONS FAILURE". THIS RESULTED IN A "SUDDEN LOSS OF FORWARD PROPULSION AND DELAYED ACCELERATION" WHEN MERGING ONTO A 40 MPH STREET. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, THE WRENCH LIGHT AND THE TRACTION CONTROL DASH LIGHTS CAME ON AND THE ENGINE EXPERIENCED HIGH RPM'S WITH LITTLE FORWARD MOVEMENT. WE TOOK THE PROBLEM TO AUTHORIZED FORD DEALER WHO RECOMMENDED REPAIRS TO THE COMPUTER SYSTEM COSTING US $2,000 EVEN THOUGH IT KNEW ABOUT THE SYSTEMIC TRANSMISSION DEFECT THE FORD GENERAL MANAGER STATED IN A PHONE CALL THIS MORNING (6 13 2014) HIS SERVICE DEPARTMENT HAS HAD TWO OTHER FORD FREESTYLES IN THEIR SHOP PRESENTING THE EXACT ISSUES AS OUR CAR. FOLLOWING FORD PROTOCOL RESULTED IN A "FINAL" DIAGNOSIS OF TRANSMISSION FAILURE. POINT BEING, THE LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP ADMITTEDLY HAD PRIOR KNOWLEDGE OF THE CVT TRANSMISSION FAILURES YET DID NOT RELAY THAT INFORMATION TO US AT THE ONSET OF THE SYSTEMIC DEFECT. THE VEHICLE SITS IN OUR DRIVEWAY. IT IS NOT SAFE TO OPERATE AS WE ELECTED NOT TO REPLACE THE DEFECTIVE CVT TRANSMISSION AT A QUOTED COST OF $5,000 PLUS INSTALLATION. *JS

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER, WHO STATED THAT THE WIRING FROM THE SIDE VIEW MIRRORS HAD FAILED, AND CAUSED THE FUSE BOX AND RELAY TO MALFUNCTION. THE CONTACT WAS ADVISED THAT BOTH COMPONENTS WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 134,000.

THE CONTACT MERGED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND SHUT OFF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS ABLE TO RESTART AND RESUMED NORMAL OPERATION. THE FAILURE OCCURRED INTERMITTENTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO STATED THAT THE TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 120,000.
THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 29,2013 I NOTICED A NOISE IN MY ENGINE COMPARTMENT. I TOOK IT TO MY MECHANIC HE SAID IT WAS THE TRANSMISSION AND TO CALL THE DEALER. WE CALLED THE DEALER THEY SAID TO GET A TRANSMISSION IT WOULD BE A REMANUFACTURED ONE USING OUR OLD ONE FOR THE CORE AND WOULD BE ABOUT 48 HUNDRED DOLLARS HOWEVER THEY CAN'T GET ONE. I NOW HAVE A CAR I CAN'T DRIVE OR SELL. *TR
VEHICLE LURCHES WHEN BRAKES ARE APPLIED IN FORWARD AND REVERSE. HAPPENED MANY TIMES. THE WRENCH INDICATOR LIGHT CAME ON ALSO WHEN THIS HAPPENED. THIS HAPPENED MANY TIMES WHEN WE FIRST PURCHASED THE VEHICLE. I CHECKS THREADS ON THE INTERNET AND SAW THIS AS A COMMON PROBLEM. I PERSONALLY CLEANED THE THROTTLE BODY AS SHOWN ON YOUTUBE BY A GENTLEMAN AND IT FIXED THE PROBLEM FOR AWHILE. THIS HAPPENED RECENTLY TO MY WIFE AS SHE WAS LEAVING HER WORK PARKING LOT AT LOW SPEED. LURCHED WHEN PUT IN GEAR WITH BRAKES APPLIED. CAR FELT UNCONTROLLABLE. WE SEE THAT AN INVESTIGATION ON THIS PROBLEM HAS BEGUN SO I WOULD CONFER WITH OTHER VEHICLE OWNERS. MORE TIMES AND DATES THAN I CAN REMEMBER THAT LURCHING HAS TAKEN PLACE. ONE TIME I HAD TO SLIP IT INTO NEUTRAL TO STOP THE CAR AND APPLY THE BRAKES. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHERE IT WAS ADVISED THAT THE THROTTLE BODY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 121,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 141,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 FORD FREESTYLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 68 MPH, THE CBT TRANSMISSION CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO ACCELERATE WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE PCM TRANSMISSION CONTROL HAD EXCEEDED THE CURRENT CONDITION. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. THE APPROXIMATE MILEAGE WAS 79,957. THE CONSUMER STATED TWO DAYS AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED, THE WRENCH LIGHT ILLUMINATED. SINCE TAKING MY VEHICLE INTO THE DEALERSHIP FOR REPAIRS I HAVE NOTICED THAT MY VEHICLE IS HESITATING. WHEN YOU PRESS ON THE ACCELERATOR THE VEHICLE DOES NOT INCREASE SPEED MORE THAN 8 TO 10 MILES WHEN YOU PUSH THE ACCELERATOR TO THE FLOOR. I HAVE TAKEN THIS VEHICLE TO 2 DIFFERENT DEALERSHIP THAT SPECIALIZE IN FORD PRODUCT BUT NOT THE FORD DEALERSHIP. I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT MY TRANSMISSION NEEDS TO BE REBUILT AND I WAS TOLD AT ANOTHER DEALERSHIP THAT IT WAS IN DESPERATE NEED OF REPLACING OR REBUILDING. I FEEL AS THOUGH FORD KNOWS THE PROBLEMS THAT THE OWNERS ARE FACING AND NEED TO STEP THEIR GAME UP. I HAVE ANOTHER YEAR AND A HALF BEFORE THIS VEHICLE WILL BE PAID IN FULL. I FEEL AT THIS POINT THAT FORD ASSEMBLED ALL OF THESE VEHICLES AND SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR SELLING THESE LEMONS. WHEN YOU START LOOKING AT COMPLAINT AFTER COMPLAINT FROM DIFFERENT CUSTOMERS ALL OVER THE WORLD THEN YOU KNOW THERE IS A BIGGER PROBLEM. I FEEL ALL THE MONEY THAT I HAVE INVESTED AND STILL INVESTING TO SAVE MY CREDIT HAS TURNED ME AWAY FROM FORD VEHICLES OF ANY KIND AT THIS POINT. *TR
WE ARE A CALIFORNIA COUPLE IN OUR 70S, LIVING ON SOCIAL SECURITY AND A TEACHERS PENSION. IN 2012 WE BOUGHT A 2006 FORD FREESTYLE FOR $11,000. IT WAS IN IMMACULATE CONDITION AND HAD JUST 26,000 MILES. AFTER LESS THAN TWO YEARS AND AN ADDITIONAL 20,000 MILES, THE TRANSMISSION FAILED SUDDENLY AND COMPLETELY. THE TOTAL MILEAGE OF 46,000 IS BARELY THREE-QUARTERS OF THE WAY TO THE FIRST RECOMMENDED SERVICING, FACTORY-SET AT 60,000 MILES. WE WERE TOLD BY A REPAIR SHOP THAT THERE ARE NO REBUILT UNITS AVAILABLE FOR THIS TRANSMISSION AND A LOCAL TRANSMISSION EXPERT REFUSES TO WORK ON THESE UNITS, A CVT' (CONSTANT VELOCITY TRANSMISSION) AND THE ONLY OPTION IS A NEW REPLACEMENT THAT COSTS $5,000 FOR THE PART AND $1,000 TO INSTALL. A LITTLE RESEARCH REVEALED MANY CASES OF EARLY FAILURE FOR THESE TRANSMISSIONS (USED IN THE 2005 THROUGH 2007 MODEL YEARS), EVEN VERY EARLY FAILURES FOR REPLACEMENT TRANSMISSIONS. IT ALSO REVEALED A CLASS-ACTION LAWSUIT OVER FAILURES OF THESE TRANSMISSIONS. SUCH COMMON FAILURES SEEMS TO MAKE IT INADVISABLE TO INSTALL A TRANSMISSION SALVAGED FROM A WRECKED CAR. HOW HAS FORD DEALT WITH THE PROBLEM? THE LOCAL DEALER HAS BEEN FRIENDLY AND HELPFUL, BUT WE DID NOT BUY THE CAR FROM THEM, WE ARE NO'T THE ORIGINAL OWNERS AND THE SIX-YEARS OF WARRANTY HAD JUST EXPIRED' AND IT IS NO'T A DEALER ISSUE, IT IS A MATTER OF THE POOR QUALITY OF THE MANUFACTURER'S PART. SO HOW HAS THE FORD CORPORATE OFFICE DEALT WITH THE PROBLEM? THEY OFFERED X-PLAN PRICING AND CREDIT FOR TWO MONTHLY PAYMENTS IF WE WOULD BUY A NEW FORD. WE MET WITH A SALESMAN, AND HE SAID HE COULD MAKE A BETTER OFFER SIMPLY THROUGH THE FLEXIBILITY HE HAS IN PRICING. INFORMED OF THIS AND GIVEN AN OFFER TO SHARE IN OUR LOSS BY SELLING A REPLACEMENT TRANSMISSION FOR $1,500, A FORD CORPORATE OFFICE REPRESENTATIVE SAID THEY WOULD NOT BUDGE. *TR

I RECENTLY PURCHASED A 2006 FORD FREESTYLE. SHORTLY THEREAFTER, MY VEHICLE WAS DIAGNOSED WITH A GROWING PROBLEM WITH THE CVT TRANSMISSION. AS I STARTED INQUIRING ABOUT REPAIRS, I FOUND THAT MOST PLACES, INCLUDING SOME FORD DEALERSHIPS, COULD NOT OR WOULD NOT DO THIS REPAIR. THIS WAS DUE TO EVERYTHING FROM HAVING TRIED TO REPAIR THESE AND THE REPAIRS NOT WORKING (EVEN WHEN DONE BY FORD'S GUIDELINES), PARTS NOT BEING AVAILABLE FROM FORD, AND THE LIST GOES ON. IN DOING MORE RESEARCH, I DISCOVERED THIS IS A VERY COMMON ISSUE WITH THESE FORD CVT TRANSMISSIONS, EVEN TO THE POINT OF FORD ACKNOWLEDGING THE ISSUE THROUGH TSB'S. WAS GOING HOME AFTER VISITING WITH A FRIEND AND ON WAY BACK WAS DRIVING NORMAL SPEED LIMIT ON I75 NORTH (65MPH) WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN THE CAR WOULD NOT ACCELERATE AND AC STARTED BLOWING WARM, THE WRENCH LIGHT CAME ON. ABOUT 25~30 MINUTES LATER, I DECIDED TO TRY AND START THE CAR AND SEE WHAT WOULD HAPPEN, THE CAR STARTED RIGHT UP, EVERYTHING WORKED AS NORMAL, NO WARNING LIGHTS AT ALL. WE DROVE IT THE LAST 2 HOURS HOME WITHOUT ANY CONCERNS. WE RAN A CODE TESTER ON THE CAR THE NEXT DAY AND NOTHING CAME UP. THAT WAS IN SEPTEMBER 2013. ALMOST A YEAR LATER, THIS SEPTEMBER 2014, I HAD THE SAME THING HAPPEN AGAIN, BUT I DO NOT REMEMBER THE LIGHT COMING ON THIS TIME AND IT HAPPENED AFTER ONLY DRIVING THE CAR 6 MILES TO MY LOCAL HOME DEPOT. AGAIN ONCE I GOT BACK INTO THE CAR AFTER ABOUT 45 MINUTES, EVERYTHING SEEMED TO BE OPERATING NORMAL AGAIN. THIS IS NORMALLY MY WIFE'S GRANDSON MOBILE, SHE NOW SAYS THAT THERE IS OPPORTUNITIES WITH SURGING WHILE STOPPING AND TAKING OFF AND THE AC IS BLOWING WARM WHEN SHE IS AT STOPS OR NOT DRIVING WITH ENGINE RUNNING. I OWN A 2006 FORD FREESTYLE WHICH I PURCHASED IN 2006. I HAVE HAD SOME PAST EXPERIENCES WITH WHAT APPEARED TO BE THE TRANSMISSION SLIPPING WHEN MILEAGE WAS AROUND 50,000. THE WRENCH LIGHT WOULD COME ON, BUT THEN THE CAR WOULD RESUME AS NORMAL AND THE WRENCH LIGHT WOULD GO OFF. MY FREESTYLE NOW HAS 108,000 MILES AND THIS MORNING I WAS ON THE HIGHWAY TO WORK, THE TRANSMISSION SLIGHTLY SLIPPED AND THEN WHEN I ACCELERATED, I HAD NO POWER. I WAS ABLE TO ROLL TO A SIDE ROAD FOR SAFETY. I TURNED MY AUTO OFF AND THEN ON, PUT IT IN DRIVE AND REVERSE AND NEITHER GEARS WORKED. MY AUTOMOBILE WOULD NOT MOVE. I HAVE TALKED TO TWO FORD DEALERSHIP SERVICE DEPARTMENTS AND THEY TELL ME IT WILL BE AROUND $6000 (GIVE OR TAKE) TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION. THEY SAID THAT NO ONE WILL "REPAIR IT" DUE TO THE "CVT" TRANSMISSION. I HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED AND MISSED WORK BECAUSE OF THIS. FORD SHOULD PAY, NOT THEIR CUSTOMERS. I WANT RESTITUTION. FORD NEEDS TO RECALL THESE AUTOMOBILES AND REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION WITH ONE THAT THEY KNOW IS NOT FAULTY. VEHICLE RPMS SURGED TO ~2000RPM AND VEHICLE ACCELERATED IN THE REVERSE DIRECTION RAPIDLY. VEHICLE WAS HALTED BY A HARD BRAKE RESPONSE. I NEARLY COLLIDED WITH ANOTHER VEHICLE. LEAVING THE VEHICLE IN REVERSE AND HOLDING THE BRAKE FIRMLY, RPMS OSCILLATED BETWEEN 800-2000 REPETITIVELY (APPROXIMATELY 1-2 SECONDS PER OSCILLATION). VEHICLE EVENTUALLY STALLED. I HAVE NOTICED THIS BEHAVIOR FREQUENTLY, AND FOUND IT CAN OCCUR IN THE FORWARD OR REVERSE DIRECTIONS. FORDS CLAIM THAT RPM ONLY FLARES ~1300 IN WORST CASE IS FALSE. THE CLAIM THAT A THE VEHICLE WILL ONLY ACCELERATE TO 4 MPH IS FALSE. THE ACCELERATION EXPERIENCED BY THIS FLAW IS VERY ACUTE AND COULD EASILY RESULT IN INJURY AND/OR DEATH; ESPECIALLY GIVEN THE AGGRAVATING FACTOR THAT IT OCCURS MOST FREQUENTLY IN LOW SPEED AREAS (DRIVEWAYS, PARKING LOTS WITH PEDESTRIANS, TRAFFIC STOPS, ETC...). *TR
MY FORD FREESTYLE 2006 WITH 30,000 K MILES HAD A TRANSMISSION FAILURE WITH MY DAUGHTER DRIVING ON AN 5 LANE INTER-STATE HIGHWAY WHEN IT FAILED AND LOST POWER. MY DAUGHTER HAD TO NAVIGATE 3 LANES OF TRAFFIC AS THE CAR WAS STOPPING. THANK GOD SHE GOT SAFELY OFF THE ROADWAY. SHE COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED. AFTER READING THE INTERNET I AM CONVINCE THAT FORD'S DESIGN IS FAULTY AND FORD IS NOT TAKING ANY RESPONSIBILITY FOR CORRECTING. *TR
THE PASSENGER SIDE PUDDLE LIGHT UNDER THE MIRROR WAS SMOKING. I'D HAD THE DRIVER SIDE DOOR AND TRUNK OPEN FOR JUST ABOUT THREE MINUTES WHEN SOMEONE PASSING BY BROUGHT IT TO MY ATTENTION THAT THE RIGHT SIDE MIRROR WAS SMOKING. YOU COULD SMELL PLASTIC BURNING AND FEEL THE HEAT WHEN YOU TOUCHED THE MIRROR. AFTER A PERIOD OF TIME IT STOPPED SMOKING. THE FOLLOWING DAY JULY 3RD IT HAPPENED AGAIN. I DECIDED NOT DRIVE THE CAR FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS RATHER THAN CHANCING ANY ADDITIONAL DAMAGE. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE LINCOLN DEALER ON MONDAY WHERE THEY CUT THE WIRE FOR THE PUDDLE LIGHT AND SHOWED ME THE DAMAGE TO THE UNIT. I WAS TOLD THAT TO REPAIR THIS I WOULD HAVE TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE MIRROR ASSEMBLY AT A COST OF $500.00. AT THIS POINT I AM UNDECIDED AS TO WHAT I WILL DO. APPARENTLY THIS IS A PROBLEM THAT FORD KNOWS ABOUT, BUT I COULD NOT FIND ANY TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETINS. I DID FIND NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS PARTICULAR PROBLEM WITH THE PUDDLE LIGHTS NOT JUST LIMITED TO THE FREESTYLE. *TR
HAD GONE THRU FAST FOOD DRIVE THRU AND PARKED BRIEFLY TO EAT. LEFT VEHICLE RUNNING WITH A/C ON. PUT VEHICLE IN REVERSE TO BACK OUT OF PARKING SPACE. VEHICLE LUNGED BACKWARDS ACROSS THE DRIVEWAY. HIT BRAKES QUICKLY AND DID NOT HIT ANYONE OR OTHER CARS. THEN WHEN PULLING OUT ONTO MAIN ROAD, VEHICLE ALTERNATELY RACED AND SPUTTERED. TOOK TO FORD DEALERSHIP WHERE THEY REPLACED THROTTLE BODY FOR $905.30. REQUESTED REFUND OF REPAIR CHARGE UNDER CUST SAT PROGRAM 12N03. DENIED BECAUSE DEALERSHIP DID NOT NOTE 'SURGE' IN WORK ORDER OR INCLUDE ANY TROUBLE CODES ON INVOICE. *TR
I TURNED LEFT AT THE TRAFFIC LIGHT AND THE CAR WAS HAVING TROUBLE ACCELERATING. THEN I NOTICED THE WRENCH SYMBOL ON THE DASH BOARD LIGHT UP. ALTHOUGH THE CAR WAS MOVING FORWARD IT WAS NOT DOING SO AS IT WOULD HAVE NORMALLY. WENT HOME AND TURNED IT OFF. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY HAVE TOLD ME I NEED A NEW THROTTLE BODY. THIS WILL BE THE SECOND REPLACEMENT OF THAT PART SINCE WE HAVE OWNED THE CAR( IT WAS PURCHASED NEW IN APRIL OF 2006). SO IT WILL BE THE THIRD THROTTLE BODY IN THAT CAR IN SEVEN YEARS. WHETHER THIS IS A PART FLAW OR A DESIGN FLAW ON THE PART OF FORD OR IT'S MANUFACTURING FACILITIES SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE ABOUT THIS. I HAVE READ SO MANY COMPLAINTS ONLINE ABOUT THIS PROBLEM IT SEEMS IT WOULD BE TIME FOR THE GOVERNMENT TO STEP IN AND MAKE THEM PAY FOR THE REPAIRS, AS I'M SURE THERE ARE MANY. IT WAS NICE OF THE TAX PAYERS TO BAIL OUT THE AUTO INDUSTRY WHEN THEY NEEDED IT, SO WHAT ABOUT US , THE CONSUMER, DON'T WE COUNT. THIS CAR HAS A KNOWN ISSUE, WHICH I EXPERIENCED, WHERE CARBON DEPOSITS IN THE THROTTLE BODY CAUSE IT TO SURGE OR STALL UNEXPECTEDLY. THE REMEDY AS GIVEN BY FORD IS TO HAVE THE THROTTLE BODY CLEANED AND THE COMPUTER (PCM) REPROGRAMMED. LOOKING IN TO VARIOUS FORUMS FOR INFORMATION ON THE TOPIC, SUCH AS EDMUNDS AND FREESTYLE OWNER FORUMS, MANY OWNERS REPORT THE PROBLEM RECURRING AFTER THIS FIX HAD BEEN IMPLEMENTED, MOSTLY A FEW 10'S OF THOUSANDS OF MILES LATER. OTHERS, WHO HAD THEIR THROTTLE BODIES COMPLETELY REPLACED, WITH A THROTTLE OF NEWER DESIGN, REPORT NO FURTHER ISSUES AT ANY REPORTED RANGE. I AM ASKING WHY FORD IS ALLOWED TO TEMPORARILY BANDAGE A KNOWN SAFETY ISSUE, THAT IS ALSO KNOWN TO RECUR AFTER THIS FIX HAS BEEN IMPLEMENTED, RATHER THAT APPLYING WHAT SEEMS TO BE A PERMANENT SAFETY FIX, REPLACEMENT OF THE THROTTLE? THE SURGING IS BAD ENOUGH THAT HAD I NOT EXPERIENCED IT PREVIOUSLY, AND BEEN SEMI-ANTICIPATING IT, I WOULD HAVE BEEN PUSHED INTO AN INTERSECTION AND INTO TRAFFIC. NONETHELESS, THE CAR DID MOVE FORWARD SEVERAL FEET. THIS WAS ON MY TRIP TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP (24 JUNE 2013) TO HAVE THE PRESCRIBED FIX APPLIED. I DO NOT BELIEVE A TEMPORARY FIX, ONE THAT ALLOWS TO PROBLEM TO RECUR, IS IN THE BEST INTEREST OF PUBLIC SAFETY, AND THAT FORD SHOULD, INSTEAD, FOCUS ON A PERMANENT FIX TO ITS SAFETY ISSUE. I WOULD LIKE TO NOTE, THOSE WHO HAVE HAD THEIR THROTTLES REPLACED STATE THE NEW ONE IS OF A DIFFERENT DESIGN. FOR EXAMPLE: THE NEW ONE IS A NON-HEATED BODY, VS THE PREVIOUS DESIGN WHICH HAS A HEATED BODY, WHICH IS SUSPECT TO FAILURE. THE OLD THROTTLE (5F9Z-9E926-AA) VS THE NEW ONES (6F9Z-9E926-A) ARE DESIGNATED BY THE DIFFERENT PARTS NUMBERS PROVIDED, FURTHER SHOWING FORD'S KNOWLEDGE THE OLD (HEATED) VERSION OF THE THROTTLE IS, ITSELF, CAUSING THE SAFETY ISSUE, AND THAT THEIR ONE-TIME FIX IS ONLY TEMPORARY. *TR
THE VEHICLE WAS IDLE WHILE I WAS WAITING TO ENTER INTO TRAFFIC AND IT LUNGED FORWARD MULTIPLE TIME. I SHUT THE CAR OFF AND WHEN I STARTED IT AGAIN IT DID NOT RESPOND WHEN I PLACED IT IN DRIVE OR REVERSED. AFTER THAT IT SEEMS TO LUNGE FORWARD WHENEVER IT WANTS TO WITHOUT ANY REASON. IN CA FOR FUNERAL, CHECK ENGINE (WRENCH) LIGHT CAME ON. WE BROUGHT THE CAR TO KEN GRODY FORD IN BUENA PARK. THEY AT FIRST SAID TRANSMISSION COULD BE FIXED, BUT DURING NEXT DIAGNOSTICS, THE TRANSMISSION FROZE. REBUILT TRANS ORDERED FROM FORD. CAR LEFT THERE, WE RENTED ONE AND CAME HOME. OUR DAUGHTER DROVE THE CAR HOME ON 7/3/13, GOT 300 MILES IN TO TRIP, TRANSMISSION LOCKED UP, NO POWER. TOWED TO BERGE FORD IN MESA, AZ WHERE WE LIVE. A SECOND TRANSMISSION PUT IN. SEVERAL INCIDENTS OF LEAKAGE, THEN PICKED CAR UP ON 8/1/13, GOT ONE MILE ON FREEWAY, SMOKE COMING OUT OF BACK END. VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION NOW TWICE FOR THIS TRANSMISSION. IT IS NOW 8/6/13, CAR STILL NOT FIXED. *TR
AFFECTED PART: THROTTLE BODY. TWO YRS AGO WE HAD OUR CAR REPAIRED FOR A THROTTLE BODY ISSUE OUR CAR WAS LUNGING FORWARD AGGRESSIVELY AND SOMETIMES STALLED. IT WAS A TERRIBLE SAFETY ISSUE, B/C IT WAS ALSO HAPPENING WHEN MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE. THERE WAS NO RECALL AT THAT TIME WHEN WE TOOK THE CAR TO ONE FORD DEALERSHIP. THEY REPAIRED THE THROTTLE BODY AND THE CAR RAN FOR 2 YRS WITHOUT THE SAME PROBLEM. UNFORTUNATELY, HERE WE ARE 2 YRS LATER, & OUR CAR IS AT ANOTHER FORD DEALERSHIP THE THROTTLE BODY NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. WE HAVE SPENT SO MUCH ALREADY, AND NOW WE HAVE TO PAY $1700 TO FIX THE THROTTLE BODY & ALSO THE ALTERNATOR. THERE ARE SO MANY FORD FREESTYLE OWNERS WHO HAVE HAD THIS SAME ISSUE WHY HASN'T A RECALL BEEN ISSUED? I JUST FOUND OUT TODAY THAT THERE WAS A CUSTOMER SERVICE SATISFACTION PROGRAM FOR JUST A CLEANING BACK IN NOV 2012. I DID NOT RECEIVE THIS LETTER, BUT IT WILL NOT HELP US ANYWAY SINCE THE THROTTLE BODY IS NO LONGER USABLE. *TR

THE VEHICLE MAKES A LOUND RUMBLING NOISE AT LOW SPEED. DEALER (LINDSAY FORD OF SILVER SPRING, MD) HAS HAD THE CAR FOR 2 DAYS AND DID NOT DIAGNOSE OR REPAIR. TECH SAYS IT'S BECAUSE OF TRANSMISSION GOING BAD BUT THEY ARE NOT SURE. THEY SAY THEY ARE UNABLE TO PROVIDE PARTS OR SERVICE AND CAR MAY BREAK DOWN ANYTIME. *TR
