NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2014 Ford Fusion. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
My 2014 ford fusion eco boost was cranked, a message popped up about overheating and the pedal went out. 2 Car shops later, ive replaced the thermostat, water pump and timing belt to find now it has a cracked engine. I have never missed a oil change and always kept fluids in my car, it has less than 60,000 miles. This a a defective issue in a court case strung out for years about allecoboosts. People are buying these cars like me, i paid $26,000 for mine and having the engine blown shortly after and all ecoboosts are. This is a ford issue and I should not be held responsible to pay for a new engine, esp when it will happen again with the new engine as it is a defect from ford !! See link ! https://fordauthority.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/2020-Ford-Escape-Exterior-021-Titanium.jpg
Coolant intrusion into cylinders two and three. Replacement of full engine required 76k miles. Vehicle stalled on interstate in heavy traffic. Technical service bulletin posted by Ford motor company regarding above issue.
While driving the transmission shifts extremely hard. When you accelerate to pass or speed up the car downshifts the RPMs skyrocket and the cars transmission is stuck causing an extremely dangerous situation. Driving down the road the car jerks or RPMs will go up for no reason. The car recently got stuck at n reverse in a parking garage. Backing up the gearshift went into park and the transmission stuck in revers. Took to dealership and was told they didn’t have time to look at it after having cut for a whole day and half after I had yo pay for my own rental car. She said that’s just how the transmission is.
The contact's daughter owns a 2014 Ford Fusion. The contact stated that while her daughter was driving on the highway, she had to reverse the vehicle. After she shifted the gear shifter into reverse and then attempted shift into drive, the gear shifter would not move after multiple attempts. The contact stated that her daughter then shut off the vehicle. Her daughter was unaware if any warning lights had appeared on the instrument panel prior to the failure. The contact's daughter was able to have the vehicle towed to a dealer where they informed her that there were no recalls on the vehicle. Upon investigation, the contact linked the failure NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V362000 (Power Train). The manufacturer was notified of the failure and offered no assistance. The vehicle had yet to be repaired and remained in the possession of the dealer. The failure mileage was unknown.
Swollen lug nuts. This is being ridiculous that this has not been recalled yet
While driving on the highway last week at around 65 mph (10 minutes into my commute), my car display sensor started indicating that there was a door that became loose and unlatched. I had nobody in the car with me and noticed that the passenger front door popped loose and needed to be pushed closed. I have not seen the incident occur a second time, not has it been inspected.
Driver’s climate fault. Temporary lost communication with the climate system When this happens the a/c goes out and the windows will not roll down. It it way too hot in Texas for me wife and kids to get stuck with the windows up and the a/c not working. We have it at the dealership several time it their fix does not last.
Coolant level low indicator comes on. Checked level and looked low but I take cap off and level normalized as if there was suction on the reservoir. Replaced the cap. Nothing changed. When I would start the car it would run like it’s misfiring and sometimes stall out completely. Check engine light would come on. Kept checking coolant and it wasn’t low. Sounds like a bad sensor, right? I’ve kept up on my recalls and it had been replaced when that recall came out. I told my mechanic about the issue when I brought it to the shop for oil change and brakes/tires/rotors. He could not replicate the problem because the car kept clearing the code and it never misfired when he started it. (I should mention that at first this was an intermittent issue when it started in July.) I had no choice but to drive the car when I went to visit my mom 5 hours away in early august. I went to start the car in her driveway one morning and within seconds the temp gage went all the way to hot. Obviously the car can’t actually overheat that fast, but regardless, it went into limp mode. This time the coolant level actually was low, however not so low as to merit what was happening. I topped off the coolant level. Started it again. Same thing happened again. Called tow truck to bring to the shop. When we loaded it onto the tow truck it started up and didn’t throw any codes. WTF?! So it goes to the shop and again they can’t replicate the problem. Said a mechanic drove it for over an hour and nothing happened. I pick the car up and drive it back home. Coolant low message comes on a half hour from home. I was away for the better part of august so I couldn’t do anything with the car. Dropped it off at Ford last week. They said I have cracks in cylinder walls and there’s significant amount of coolant in the engine. The mechanic said he’s been seeing this happening with a lot of the 1.6 eco boost engines. I’m just past warranty. I just paid this car off last year. I am infuriated.
Vehicle engine stopped and the following warning appeared: Steering Assist Fault Service Required. The vehicle engine would not turn back on. Failure occurred at 97344.8. Vehicle is regularly serviced. Vehicle will be towed to dealer.
Shifter Cable broke. Ford dealership confirmed and fixed with new cable and bushing. This issue was listed under NHTSA Campaign number 19V362000, yet no recall shows for my VIN number. Yet, the break down and fix was exactly the same thing called out in the campaign.
The contact owns a 2014 Ford Fusion. The contact stated that while driving at 65 mph, the vehicle loss motive power without warning. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic and diagnosed as transmission failure. The vehicle was not repaired and remained at the mechanic. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 123,000.
The charger for the plug-in hybrid component of the vehicle started a fire that damaged my property and vehicle. Ford failed to provide a replacement of the recalled charger, including when vehicle was at dealerships, despite my request at the time. Had I not noticed the fire immediately, it likely would have been catastrophic. Fortunately, I was able to use all of a full fire extinguisher to put it out. I contacted Ford about this matter and was told by their corporate customer service that they had no information or assistance of any kind to provide me. I requested a manager call me however I have not received a call back.
It has been reported that the battery in the trunk of the vehicle caught fire and melted down. It is unknown if the vehicle was being operated at the time of the incident. It is unknown if there is a fire or police report available. This is a U.S. Government vehicle owned by GSA and the vehicle is self insured by the government. There was an estimate written by a repair facility and the vehicle has been determined a total loss.
I receive this message sporadically. It disables the heat and air to my vehicle, also the passenger side front and rear window locks. When it's cold the heat does not work and when it's hot the air does not work. Also, when it rains or if it's a muggy day the windows fog up and I'm unable to defrost them. This is a major hazard. Can you please assist?! "Temporarily lost communication with the Climate System"
This is a report of the same issues that have been issued a recall for newer years of the same make and model, the Ford Fusion. The rear backup camera stopped working and directly impedes the safety and visibility when reversing the vehicle. An error/warning comes up to contact the dealership due to the malfunction. The 2014 was excluded from the recent recall for these same backup cameras on the 2016+ models. The recall needs to be extended to ALL years of the Ford Fusion.
I have a 2014 hybrid with 91000. Miles on it and the transmission already went out. That is ridiculous and Ford should have are all on this. It’s 5600 for a new one.
The right front passenger seat belt locks when vehicle is not running or in parked preventing use. Cannot secure passenger before driving. Often happens in warmer weather.
I was driving at reg speed(55) down a flat highway. The warning sound and dash lights came on. Startled me.. the "hill assist does not work at this time"?? Light came on. Also 2 red lights at the bottom. I tried to see what the other lights were after I jumped and floated over to the rumble strips.. just bought the car yesterday.. happened twice today...
While at drive through at Smoothie King, brakes just went out WITH NO WARNING. I had to press the brake pedal all the way to the ground and the car eventually stopped. Noone was hurt, no property or car was damaged (thank goodness) Slowly drove in parking lot and called wife to meet me. Then the indicator "Low brake fluid" flashed. Took other car to auto parts, purchase brake fluid. Went back to car, poured brake fluid in car. Did not help as still had to press brake pedal all the way to floor. Saw puddle of brake fluid on ground. Searched online and saw same issue on Ford Fusion reported as there was no warning. Some people got into an accident, others did not. When I called Ford today at 8:48 am, rep said VIN # not on recall but said there have been brake issues but my VIN # is not on recall. I do not want to pay for the cost as I would have to have the car towed to the Ford shop. I am being proactive to have it reported so it can be repaired at no cost like all of the recalls on my car.
While driving back home from work on 07/22/21, I heard a noise on the front side of the car and lost power. I had to pull over to a parking spot in an apartment complex. My car wasn't moving forward or backward, I called Good Sam road assistance to get it towed on Friday, it has been inspected in a repair shop since then and apparently is a transmission issue. Good thing is there were no cars behind or in front of me and avoided a collision.
Check Engine light and Wrench light illuminated on the car Sunday. However, the car was at the dealer twice the same week before this happened. I pulled over because the vehicle was performing rough into a Lowes parking lot. I was within several hundred feet of a Ford dealer and drove it there. The vehicle smelled like smoke and noise from the rear of the vehicle. Service advisor Roxanne Detgen, t. no. 586-840-1086, at Dorian Ford, says that the car likely needs a new engine. She has contacted Ford motor company and then will contact me to authorize a teardown of the engine. The vehicle is a safety risk because it had sudden poor driving performance without the illumination of any lights, loss of power, and is a fire hazard. In fact, it was at the dealer twice the same week this happened and no lights were on.
I was driving and all of a sudden these alerts popped up and my power steering was lost.
While driving my 2014 Ford Fusion SE purchased in Ohio the power steering suddenly went out. This jeopardized the safety of my own children, children playing in my neighborhood, as well as, my own safety when I was left unable to steer the car. An independent mechanic diagnosed the problem. The driving gear was exposed to salt and brine due to the harsh Ohio winters. The sub-quality bolts, used by Ford, corroded and sheered allowing the driving gear to become completely detached. There is already a recall for this very issue, Reference# 19V632000. I ask that my vehicle be added to this recall. Thank you for your dedication to keeping our roads and families safe. In Christ, S. Alex Yates Youth Minister Church of the Holy Angels
I purchased 4 x Michelin Sport A/S Plus 225/50R17's in December of 2017 and have driven those set of tires 30,000 miles on a 45,000 mile tire. My car started wobbling and so I checked the tire and found severe wear in the INSIDE wall/top of both of my rear tires. I had to purchase two new tires because I felt it was not safe to drive. I have included a picture and you will see there is tread left on the tire and worn uneven. I also feel these tires are faulty and could cause an accident.
While I was driving the power steering completely shut down and locked up like crazy. this car only has 60k miles on it. I talked to the dealership and they say they have seen this happen with Ford Fusions with less than 20K miles and it has been quite a problem. I also looked it up, and there are a lot of us that have had this happen with low miles and low years of ownership. This is such an issue that Ford doesn't even replace it with the same part and has a revision they are installing.
The contact owns a 2014 Ford Fusion. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked and attempting to place the rear driver’s side and center seat in the upright position, the seats failed to move. The contact removed the bottom half of the seat bracket to get the seat in the upright position. The contact was however unable to reconnect the seat belt back in the correct position. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximate 70,000.
vehicle lost power steering mid turn almost causing loss of control, found multiple recalls for this issue in other years and models of the Ford Fusion.
I have a 2014 Ford Fusion SE 1.5L . Months ago i had drove it and it over heated and i put antifreeze and it ran right back up , the next day it wouldn’t start went to the shop got it fixed ran for a day then the next day it stopped again . Any suggestions of what’s going on.? They said i would have to replace the whole engine if so how would i know if i have the cylinder temp sensor or not . I see many cases of it so wanted to will Ford be covering for this defect
The contact owns a 2014 Ford Fusion. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle would misfire without warning. The contact stated that the check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was diagnosed and repaired; however, the failure persisted. The manufacturer was informed of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 106,000.
Right and left front rubber/flexible brake line failure. Lines split unexpectedly with no indication of rupture caused by road hazard and brakes failed.
I pulled out of my drive way and immediately the dash board lite up saying hill start assist not available, steering assist fault service required. So I backed up to the drive way and the power steering completely stopped working.
On June 15th, 2021 The APM module stopped working as well as the audio control module in my 2014 Ford fusion. The radio did not work. The phone remained connected, I could call out, people could dial in, people could hear me but I could not hear them. Since my hands-free device no longer worked that put me at a safety risk. I am currently paying for the dealer to replace the APIM module, and they have already replaced the audio control module at my cost. The component is under recall for multiple other Ford Models. There has been a technical safety bulletin on it for my model and they have replaced it up to six years. Mine did not go out until the 7th year.
The contact owns a 2014 Ford Fusion. The contact stated that while his son was driving 45-50 mph, the low coolant warning light illuminated, and the vehicle stalled. The contact stated that his son was able to veer to side of the roadway, where he attempted to restart the vehicle but was unsuccessful. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. The contact restarted the vehicle and the vehicle was then taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the engine coolant was leaking in the engine block. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The contact stated that the failure was related to NHTSA Campaign Number: 17V209000 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 89,471.
The vehicle was taken to the dealer for recalls, I was told all the recalls with a door latch were fixed. Now the door latch won’t close and the door stays open. Reached out to Ford and since it is the weekend ford is ignoring the matter until a dealer is open and it can be towed there. This is a safety matter that ford is ignoring.
I was driving around a 2 lane roundabout when my cars steering wheel lost power steering causing me to Swerve into outside Lane almost hitting another vehicle. There were no other warning lights on before this happened but after the incident I had a steering assist, hill top and advanced traction control lights come on. And now have no power steering
Coolant leaking into engine. Misfires, stalling, white smoke from tail pipe.
The contact's wife owns a 2014 Ford Fusion. The contact stated while his wife was driving 15 mph, the low engine coolant warning light was illuminated and the vehicle went into limp mode. The driver parked the vehicle on the side of the road. The vehicle was not drivable. The contact towed the vehicle to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed with needing the engine to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 69,900.
The contact owns a 2014 Ford Fusion. The contact stated while entering and starting the vehicle she noticed that the center console display screen started flashing with lines and numbers running on the screen before going completely white. The contact stated that the failure stayed that way for a couple of days and went away but the failure recurred several times afterward. The next time the failure occurred, the contact was driving at undisclosed speed at night and the screen was flashing continually which made it difficult for the contact to see anything in front of her vehicle. The contact pulled over and restarted the vehicle and continued driving to the residence. The contact took the vehicle to the local dealer to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the display was defective and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact suffered from epilepsy seizures and was concerned that while driving, the failure could trigger a seizure. The manufacture was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 76,046.
The contact owns a 2014 Ford Fusion. The contact stated upon exiting the vehicle, he noticed pieces of plastic bushings on the floorboard. The contact stated that the brake light was illuminated on the control panel. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer where it was diagnosed with the brake assembly needing to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure and informed the contact that the failure was not covered under warranty. The failure mileage was approximately 34,600.
MY 16 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER CONTACTED ME SAYING HER CAR WOULD NOT 'GO', THAT SHE WAS DRIVING AND IT JUST DROPPED DOWN TO 20MPH AND ALTHOUGH SHE WAS ACCELERATING, NOTHING WAS HAPPENING, THE RPMS WERE NOT INCREASING. SHE TURNED OFF THE VEHICLE AND THEN TESTED DRIVING THROUGH A NEIGHBORHOOD BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO DRIVE HOME AS SHE WAS IN ANOTHER CITY. EVERYTHING SEEMED WELL SO SHE BEGAN HER JOURNEY BACK HOME, ONLY TO MAKE IT ABOUT 2 MILES AND THE CAR WAS LOSING THE ABILITY TO ACCELERATE AGAIN. SHE WAS ABLE TO PARK IT IN A NEIGHBORHOOD AND WAS GIVEN A RIDE HOME. WE THEN WENT TO HAVE THE VEHICLE TOWED AND UPON ARRIVING, I NOTICED THE BRAKE LIGHTS WERE ILLUMINATED, BUT THE CAR WAS OFF. I DECIDED TO TRY TO DRIVE IT HOME SO THAT I COULD CONFIRM AND EXPERIENCE WHAT SHE DESCRIBED. I MAINTAINED A LOWER RATE OF SPEED, AROUND 40MPH. I DECIDED TO TRY TO PUT ON CRUISE CONTROL, BUT IT WOULD NOT WORK. AT ONE POINT WHERE THE CAR WAS LOSING THE ABILITY TO ACCELERATE AND WAS ACTIVELY DECELERATING, I PULLED IN TO A CONVENIENCE STORE. I THEN NOTICES A 'HILL PARK ASSIST' WARNING LIGHT COME ON. I DID FINALLY DRIVE IT THE REMAINDER OF THE WAY HOME. ONCE HOME, I BEGAN RESEARCHING THE POSSIBLE ISSUES AND FOUND THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH FORDS. THERE WAS A SUGGESTION TO LOOK AT THE FLOOR BOARD, UPON DOING SO, I FOUND BROKEN PIECES OF A SILICON TYPE BUSHING. IN SUMMARY: THE 'BRAKE SWITCH ENGAGEMENT BUSHING' BROKE AWAY. THIS CAUSES THE BRAKE LIGHTS TO REMAIN ILLUMINATED, THE CRUISE CONTROL DOES NOT ENGAGE, HILL PARK ASSIST WARNING LIGHT COMES ON, BUT MOST CONCERNING IS THE VEHICLE STOPS ACCELERATING AND LOSES THE ABILITY TO MAINTAIN SPEEDS ABOVE 20-40MPH, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A DANGEROUS SCENARIO IF TRAVELING ON AN INTERSTATE.
A warning message appeared referring to the steering system and hill assist. I have had the vehicle since 2017 and kept up maintenance as recommended by Ford. The steering becomes difficult at low speeds but improved with acceleration. This is a safety hazard because when slowing down to make a turn the delay from the struggle to turn the steering wheel could result in a collision. I have had the vehicle towed to the dealership for service. When checking recalls on the NHTSA app by YEAR/MAKE/MODEL, I discovered that this issue is common for drivers of my particular vehicle. See info below from www.NHTSA.gov: “ Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ vehicles manufactured February 3, 2012, to March 20, 2015, and 2015 Ford Edge vehicles manufactured February 26, 2015, to February 28, 2015, and originally sold, or currently registered in, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. In the affected vehicles, snow or water containing road salt or other contaminants may corrode the electric power steering gear motor attachment bolts.” I live in NC and the vehicle has been through 3 Winters which could be responsible for the issue since salt is constantly spread on the roads to make driving conditions safer when ice and snow are present; however, NC is not one of the states being included in Recall number 15S14. I feel that NC should be included considering salt is used during winter.
Yes check engine light came on. On the high way and my car started jerking back and forth out of control I could have been rear ended and my car started to slow down my gas peddle would not allow me to accelerate I did get to side of high way and had to figure out where to get a tow truck i put my car in shop I’ve been told I need a new transmission and I wasn’t able to fix that on my own ford has sent me a recall letter but only to fix half of my transmission and also my brake peddle got recalled I really need these problems fixed and done right not sure who I’m suppose to reach
I WENT TO HAVE MY CAR INSPECTED AND IT PASSED BUT THEY GAVE ME A FORM WITH 4 RECALLS I NEED TO HAVE REPAIRED AT NO CHARGE ASAP PLEASE

I AM A FULL TIME COLLEGE STUDENT AND JUST WANT IT REPAIRED, NEED HELP!
The yellow air bag light remains on constantly, indicating that there is an air bag malfunction. I believe there was an airbag recall on this vehicle, but I don't remember since I had five cars at one time.
