ORIGINAL SPEEDOMETER BEGAN ERRATIC OPERATION; REPLACED AT 43, 916 MILES ON 02/01/1997. REPLACEMENT SPEEDOMETER DEVELOPED SAME ERRATIC OPERATION AND WAS REPLACED AT 85,421 MILES ON 08/10/98. THE THIRD SPEEDOMETER DEVELOPED THE SAME SYMPTOMS AT 127,250 MILES IN EARLY NOV OF 1999. WITH ALL THE SPEEDOMETERS, THE PROBLEM ALWAYS IS THAT THE NEEDLE BOUNCES WILDLY BACK AND FORTH BETWEEN 50 MPH AND THE UPPER LIMIT OF THE SPEEDOMETER RANGE AND MAKES A WHIRRING NOISE. THE LOCAL FORD DEALER HAS INFORMED ME THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH ALL PRE-1996 TAURUS. REPLACING THEM OBVIOUSLY DOES NO GOOD; FROM MY EXPERIENCE THEY DON'T SEEM TO FUNCTION PROPERLY AFTER 40,000 MILES. I CONTACTED FORD MOTORS AT THEIR 800 CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE NUMBER ON 11/22/1999 AND WAS TOLD BY "RAJ" THAT THEY WERE SORRY I WAS HAVING PROBLEMS, BUT THEY COULD DO NOTHING TO ASSIST ME. HOWEVER, IF ENOUGH PEOPLE COMPLAINED, THEY WOULD CONSIDER A RECALL. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO TRAVEL UNDER OR AT THE POSTED SPEED LIMIT WITH ANY CERTAINTY WHEN THE MANUFACTURER DOES NOT PROVIDE YOU WITH RELIABLE EQUIPMENT TO DETERMINE WHAT YOUR RATE OF SPEED IS. THIS IS NOT A OWNER MAINTENANCE RELATED PROBLEM. REPLACING THE UNITS WITH A SIMILARLY FAILURE PRONE SPEEDOMETER FROM THE FORD PARTS BIN DOES NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM.

WHEN SLOWING DOWN TO GO INTO (1ST) GEAR THE TRANSMISSION WILL NOT GO INTO (1ST) GEAR, IT GOES INTO NEUTRAL. THE ENGINE HAS TO BE REVD UP TO GO INTO (1ST) GEAR. SCHEDULED TO BE FIXED TOMORROW. *AK

EXPERIENCED LIGHT SWITCH ASSEMBLY FAILURE WHILE DRIVING AT NIGHT. WHEN SWITCHED OFF HIGH BEAM LIGHTS, ALL LIGHTS WENT OUT, DASH/COURTESY AND HEADLAMP LIGHTS, PLAYED WITH UNTIL LIGHTS CAME BACK ON, DEALER. REPLACED SWITCH ASSEMBLY LOOM HEAD LIGHT. *AK
THE HEADLAMP SWITCH OVERHEATED, CAUSING THE HEADLIGHTS TO GO OUT. ADDITIONALLY, THE CONNECTOR IS MELTED. PROBLEM IS THE SAMES AS RECALL #98S01, BUT THIS VEHICLE IS NOT INCLUDED.
TRANSMISSION PLANETARY GEAR FAILURE. *AK
SHOCKS WORN, CAUSING VIBRATION.
RADIATOR FAILED
ANTILOCK BRAKES FAILED.
BRAKE ROTORS RUSTED.
ALUMINUM WHEEL MATERIAL TOO WEAK, ALLOWING SMALL HOLES TO DEVELOP.
HEAD GASKET FAIURE. *AK
TRANSMISSION GEAR LEVER STICKS.
AIR CONDITIONER BLOWER FAN WAS MAKING NOISES AT LOW SPEED. REPLACED BY DEALER UNDER WARRANTY, THEN AFTER WARRANTY EXPIRED, COMPONENT FAILED AGAIN. ALSO, DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR LATCH FAILED, DOOR WOULD NOT CLOSE AT ALL. *AK
BRAKE ROTORS FAILED.
TRANSMISSION FAILED WITHOUT WARNING WHILE ACCELERATING FROM STOP SIGN INTO TRAFFIC , TRANSMISSION BEGAN SLIPPING. THE FAILURE WAS CAUSED BY INADEQUATE LUBRICATION OF THE PLANETARY GEARSET. *AK
WHILE DRIVING VEHICLE, IT SUDDENLY ACCELERATED FOR NO APPARENT REASON, WHILE STOPPING AT LIGHT IT WOULD GO BACKWARDS WITHOUT WARNING, NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE, WOULD HAVE FOOT ON THE BRAKES AT THE TIME. *AK
SHOULDER HARNESS ON CENTURY CHILD SAFETY SEAT TOO LOOSE.

THE SPEEDOMETER CABLE HAD TO BE GREASED.
VEHICLE STALLED WITH NO PRIOR WARNING AND NO ABILITY TO RESTART, VEHICLE RESTARTED THREE HOURS LATER.
WHENEVER ABS BRAKES ARE APPLIED, VEHICLE WOULD START TO SHIMMY. TOOK TO DEALER & WAS TOLD THE ROTORS NEEDED CHANGING. PROBLEM HAS REAPPEARED. *AK
INTAKE MANIFOLD PITTED, CAUSING COOLANT LEAK.
VEHICLE EXPERIENCING PROBLEM WITH SPEEDOMETER OPERATING ERRATICALLY. REPLACEMENT HAVE BEEN MADE ON TWO OCCASIONS WITHIN 30,000 MILES. BUT PROBLEM REOCCURRED PRESENTLY AT 68,000 MILES. DEALER NOTIFIED,AND REFUSED TO REPAIR UNLESS COST GOES TO CONSUMER. *AK
POOR VENTILATION SYSTEM, CAUSING UPPER RESPIRATORY PROBLEMS.
INTERMITTENTLY IN EXTREME HOT CONDITIONS THE VEHICLE WILL STALL WITHOUT WARNING WHICH ALMOST CAUSED AN ACCIDENT. WILL NOT START UNTIL THE VEHICLE COOLS DOWN. CAUSE UNKNOWN. DEALER CANNOT DETERMINE PROBLEM. PLEASE PROVIDE DETAILS. *AK
WHEN COMING TO A STOP AT AN INTERSECTION BRAKES FAILED. *AK CONSUMER STATES VEHICLE HAS BEEN IN SHOP FOR BRAKE PROBLEMS PRIOR TO ACCIDENT FROM BRAKE VIBRATION TO THE ANTI LOCK BRAKE DASH LIGHT COMING ON WHILE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION, THEREFORE NEW ROTORS, PADS AND SHOES WERE PUT ON VEHICLE.*JB
WHILE DRIVING VEHICLE ABOUT (20-30) MPH IN RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC THE VEHICLE SLOWED DOWN SUDDENLY AND CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP BECAUSE OF THE MELTING OF THE ALTERNATOR. THE ALTERNATOR WAS REPLACED. *AK
TRANS AXLE FAILURE; FIRST COMMENCED AT 19,000 MILE OF WEAR. DEALER NOTIFIED, AND REPLACED IT WITH THE SAME MODEL( # F4DZ7000BRM) UNDER WARRANTY WITHIN ONE WEEK OF REPAIR, TRANS AXLE SEAL FAILED. FOUR YEARS LATER WITHIN 68,000 MILES, PROBLEM REOCCURRED. DEALER REFUSED TO REPAIR / REPLACE TRANS AXLE BECAUSE WARRANTY EXPIRED. PROBLEM WAS DUE TO THE SAME FAULTY PARTS. *AK

AUXILIARY ENGINE COOLING SYSTEM OCCASIONALLY CAUSES ENGINE TO STALL, CAUSING FAILURE OF ALL POWER ASSISTED FUNCTIONS. *DH
UPON FRONTAL COLLISION, DUAL AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. ESTIMATED SPEED OF IMPACT 30 MPH. PLEASE DESCRIBE DETAILS. *AK

AXLE SHAFT REPAIRED DUE TO OIL LEAK. *SD
VEHICLE WAS PARKED AND CONSUMER NOTICED THE OIL LEAKING OUT OF THE VEHICLE. THE CONSUMER HAD THE VEHICLE IN REPAIR SHOP ON THREE DIFFERENT OCCASIONS, AND THEY REPLACED THE HEAD GASKET. HOWEVER, THE THE PROBLEM HAS REOCCURRED. WHEN DRIVING ON NOV 30, THE OIL LEAKED ONTO THE ENGINE AND IN ANOTHER PART, CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO STOP WIHTOUT GIVING ANY PRIOR WARNING. THE CONSUMER SAW SMOKE AND COULD SMELL THE OIL ON THE ENGINE. *AK
FRONT END FAILED, CAUSING LOSS OF CONTROL OF VEHICLE/ACCIDENT. *DSH
TRANSMISSION/CLUTCH FAILURE.
BRAKE LIGHTS NOT ILLUMINATING WHEN DEPRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL. *AK
DRIVER SEAT/TRACT AND ANCHORS, CAUSING THE DRIVER SEAT NOT TO STAY IN POSITION, AND CAN NOT USE REAR SEAT BELT. *AK
VEHICLE CAUGHT ON FIRE TWICE. FIRST TIME THE FIRE ORIGINATED UNDER THE HOOD; SECOND TIME, ENGINE COOLING FAN MOTOR FIRE, EA96-24 ACTIVE, IN FOR REPAIRS. *AK
THE VEHICLE WAS IN REVERSE AND THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WAS STUCK AND THE CAR ACCELERATED. PLEASE DESCRIBE. *AK
