CAR ACCELERATED ON ITS OWN, APPLIED THE BRAKE IT WOULD SLOW DOWN BUT START ACCELERATING AGAIN WITHOUT TOUCHING THE GAS PEDAL..GOT STOPPED AND PRESSED GAS PEDAL DOWN AND THE ENGINE FINALLY STOPPED RACING. THIS IS THE 3RD TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED IN THE PAST 4 WEEKS. *TR
MY HUSBAND WAS DRIVING OUR 2005 FORD TAURUS WITH THE AIR CONDITIONER ON HIGH, HE HEARD A POP AND THEN SAW FLAMES COMING OUT OF THE ENGINE. HE WAS ABLE TO GET OUT OF THE VEHICLE AND CALL THE FIRE DEPT. THE CAR WENT UP IN FLAMES. THE MECHANIC SAID THE FIRE STARTED IN THE AIR CONDITIONER. THE CAR IS A TOTAL LOSS. *TR
MY WIFE HAD CALLED ME TODAY AND ADVISED THAT THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL HAD STUCK ON OUR 2005 FORD TAURUS AND ALMOST CAUSED HER TO HAVE AN ACCIDENT. WHEN I GOT HOME FROM WORK I TOOK THE TAURUS FOR A TEST DRIVE AND THE PROBLEM REOCCURRED. I WAS ON RT. 145 IN LEHIGH COUNTY PA WHEN MY CAR CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE WHEN I REMOVED MY FOOT FROM THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. I WAS ABLE TO STOP THE CAR BY STANDING ON THE BRAKE PEDAL. WHEN I PUT THE CAR IN PARK THE RPM'S REVED IN EXCESS OF 4000. I TAPPED THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL SEVERAL TIMES AND THE IDLE FINALLY CAME DOWN. AFTER RETURNING HOME I FOUND THE CRUISE CONTROL CABLE HAD BECOME DISCONNECTED FROM THE THROTTLE BODY LINKAGE WHICH PREVENTS THE THROTTLE BODY FROM CLOSING. I WAS ABLE TO RECONNECT THE CRUISE CONTROL CABLE BUT IT BECOMES DISLODGED AS SOON AS THE THROTTLE IS OPENED. THE CLIP ON THE END OF THE CRUISE CONTROL CABLE IS MADE OF PLASTIC AND APPEARS TO BE INTACT BUT MUST BE WORN ON THE INSIDE BECAUSE IT WILL NOT STAY IN PLACE. THIS IS A DANGEROUS FLAW. *TR
I WAS DRIVING MY 2005 FORD TAURUS ON HIGH WAY AT AROUND 60 MPH AND EXITED INTO LOCAL ROADS. AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT, I SUDDENLY NOTICED THAT MY VEHICLE KEPT ACCELERATING BY ITSELF. I WAS PRESSING HARD ON THE BREAK SO THAT I DID NOT RUN A RED LIGHT OR HIT SOMEONE. WHEN I FINALLY FOUND A PLACE TO PARK MY CAR ON THE SIDE OF THE STREET, THE ENGINE SPED UP TO 4000 RPM TILL I PULLED THE KEY OUT. ON MY WAY TO A LOCAL MECHANIC, THE PROBLEM JUST MAGICALLY WENT AWAY. THE SAME PROBLEM HAPPENED TWO MORE TIMES DURING THE PAST TWO MONTHS. I SAW A DOZEN SIMILAR COMPLAINTS ON THE SAME MODEL. HOPEFULLY THERE IS A RECALL BEFORE SOMETHING DISASTROUS HAPPENS. *TR
THIS IS ABOUT THE FOURTH TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED. DRIVING MY CAR AT THE POSTED SPEED LIMIT, THE CAR WANTED TO ACCELERATE ON ITS OWN. I HAVE TO RIDE THE BRAKES GOING DOWN SMALL DOWNGRADES AND GOING UP HILLS I DIDN'T NEED TO APPLY THE GAS PEDAL - IT DID IT - ALL BY ITSELF. BY THE TIME I GOT HOME THE CAR WAS REVVING. I PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL, STOMPED HARD ON THE GAS PEDAL A COUPLE OF TIMES. NOTHING. IT STILL WAS REVVING AT 4000 RPM'S. I SHUT THE MOTOR OFF, WAITED A FEW MINUTES, STARTED THE CAR AGAIN BUT IT STILL REVVED AT 4000 RPM'S. I MADE ARRANGEMENTS FOR THE CAR TO BE TOWED TO A MECHANIC. THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER STARTED THE CAR, SAID "OH MY" WHEN HE SAW THAT IT WAS REVVING TO 4000 RPM'S. HE STOMPED REALLY HARD ON THE GAS PEDAL AND THE CAR FINALLY SETTLED INTO A NORMAL IDLE. HE THOUGHT THE THROTTLE MIGHT BE LOOSE OR SOMETHING. THE MECHANIC AT THE GARAGE CLAIMED THEY COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG AFTER "TEST DRIVING" THE CAR OFF AND ON FOR TWO DAYS. I PICKED THE CAR UP AND BY THE TIME I GOT HOME (ABOUT 10 MILES) IT WAS DOING THE SAME THING. I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE THE CAR. I FEEL IT'S NOT SAFE TO DRIVE BECAUSE I HAVE TO PUT THE BRAKES ON HARD EVEN ON FLAT ROAD SURFACE. ANYWAY, I AM GOING TO CALL MY TOW SERVICE AGAIN AND PAY THE EXTRA TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED TO THE NEAREST FORD DEALERSHIP IN WEXFORD, PA. HOPEFULLY THEY WILL BE ABLE TO FIND WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS CAR. I CANNOT AFFORD TO BUY ANOTHER CAR AS I AM ON A FIXED INCOME AND THIS CAR HAS LESS THAN 74,000 MILES ON IT. I HAVE SEEN ALL THE OTHER REPORTS/COMPLAINTS REGARDING THIS VEHICLE. SEEMS TO ME IT IS A MAJOR PROBLEM AND THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL ON THIS CAR. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 FORD TAURUS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED WITHOUT WARNING. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT AFTER INSPECTING THE VEHICLE SHE NOTICED THAT THE CRUISE CONTROL CABLE HAD DETACHED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND DID NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY, I NOTICED MY CAR ACCELERATE A LITTLE ON ITS OWN. IT ALARMED ME BUT I IGNORED IT, THINKING I MAY HAVE BEEN ON A SLIGHT DOWNGRADE. A MONTH LATER, WHILE DRIVING OVER A MOUNTAIN UPHILL, MY CAR ACCELERATED ON ITS OWN AND I COULD NOT IGNORE THAT. I PRESSED THE BRAKE BUT THE ENGINE KEPT TRYING TO MOVE FASTER. THE ROAD FLATTENED OUT AND I SAW A STOP SIGN. LUCKILY THERE WAS NO ONE IN FRONT OF ME BECAUSE I COULD NOT STOP WITHOUT HAVING TO FLOOR THE BRAKES AND PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL. AS I DID THAT, THE RPMS WENT UP TO 5000. I TRIED TURNING THE CAR OFF AND ON, AND AS IT TURNED BACK ON THE ENGINE REVVED UP TO 6000 AND WOULD NOT GO DOWN AFTER SHIFTING INTO NEUTRAL. I TURNED OFF THE CAR AND HAD IT TOWED BECAUSE I WAS TOO FRIGHTENED TO CONTINUE DRIVING IT ON A NARROW, WINDY ROAD. *TR
WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE STARTED TO ACCELERATE ON ITS OWN. WHEN PUT INTO PARK THE RPM'S WENT UP TO 5,000 IN LESS THAN 3 SECONDS. TURNED THE CAR OFF, THEN BACK ON AND THE RPM'S WENT UP TO 3,000 IN JUST A FEW SECONDS. HAD THE CAR TOED TO THE DEALER. THEY SAID THEY FIXED THE PROBLEM BUT IT HAPPENED AGAIN A LITTLE OVER A WEEK AFTER THE FIRST INCONTINENT. THE SECOND TIME WHEN PUT INTO PARK THE RPM'S WENT UP TO 4,000. *TR
MY 2005 FORD TAURUS ACCELERATED ABRUPTLY AT AN INTERSECTION AT 4000 RPM. IF A CAR HAD BEEN IN FRONT OF ME IT WOULD HAVE HIT THEM. THE CAR WAS ABLE TO GET THROUGH THE INTERSECTION AND INTO A PARKING LOT. THE CAR WAS TOWED AND AS THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER STARTED THE CAR IT REVVED UP AGAIN AND HE WAS ABLE TO STOP IT IN TIME. IT IS CURRENTLY AT MY MECHANIC IN POMPANO BEACH FLORIDA. *TR
TUESDAY JULY 10, 2012, WHILE DRIVING HOME FROM WORK, HEADING SLIGHTLY UPHILL AT ROUGHLY 32 MPH, I WAS MESSING AROUND WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL THAT HASN'T BEEN WORKING SINCE SOMETIME IN EARLY DECEMBER. THE DASHBOARD CRUISE CONTROL LIGHT COMES ON WHEN I PRESS ON THEN SET ACCEL TO SET THE SPEED, BUT THE CRUISE CONTROL DOES NOT TAKE OVER THE GAS PEDAL AND MAINTAIN SPEED. IT APPEARS TO SHUT OFF WHEN I DEPRESS THE BRAKE, OR TURN THE CRUISE CONTROL OFF VIA THE STEERING WHEEL BUTTONS. ONCE BEFORE, I NOTICED DRIVING THE SAME PATH THAT THE CAR APPEARED TO ACCELERATE ON ITS OWN. THIS WAS SOMETIME EARLY SPRING 2012. ON TUESDAY, I LET OFF THE GAS PEDAL, BUT NOTICED THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO SLIGHTLY INCREASE RPM AND SPEED ON ITS OWN UP TO ABOUT 44 MPH. I WAS ABLE TO STOP AT THE STOP LIGHTS USING THE BRAKES, BUT THE ENGINE KEPT REVVING SOMEWHAT. PUSHING SOME OF THE BUTTONS AND PULLING UP ON THE GAS PEDAL WITH MY FOOT SEEMED TO RELEASE THE THROTTLE AND GET THE CAR TO ACT NORMAL ONCE AGAIN. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME I HAVE NOTICED THIS HAPPENING IN 8 MONTHS, BUT THE FIRST TIME I HAVE DOCUMENTED THE INCIDENT. *TR
ON TWO DIFFERENT OCCASIONS. FIRST, MY WIFE WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH AND THE CAR RAPIDLY ACCELERATED TO APPROX 55. DIFFICULT TO STOP, ENGINE REVVED UP TO 5K ON TACH. SECOND INCIDENT (NEXT DAY), I WAS DRIVING ON HIGHWAY DOING 65 MPH. CAR ACCELERATED RAPIDLY TO 85 MPH AND WOULD NOT SLOW DOWN UNTIL I THREW THE TRANNY INTO NEUTRAL. CAR WAS REVVING AT APPROX 5K ON TACH. I BROUGHT THE CAR TO MY MECHANIC. CRUISE CONTROL CABLE CHANGED. I HAVE BEEN DRIVING 36 YEARS AND THIS SCARED THE HELL OUT OF ME. NO INSTANCES SINCE. IS FORD GOING TO WAIT FOR SOMEONE TO BE KILLED. MY TWO DAUGHTERS WHO DRIVE THE CAR OFTEN WOULD NOT HAVE KNOWN WHAT TO DO IN THESE INSTANCES. THERE IS NO DOUBT INJURY OR DEATH WOULD HAVE OCCURRED IF WITHER OF THEM WERE DRIVING THE VEHICLE. ARE THERE NOT ENOUGH DOCUMENTED CASES TO REQUIRE FORD/GM TO STEP UP TO THE PLATE? PLEASE HELP US THAT HAVE INCURRED THE EXPENSE AS WELL AS THOSE WHO HAVE YET TO EXPERIENCE WHAT THOUSANDS OF US HAVE. *TR UPDATED 7/31/13 *CN THE CONSUMER STATED THE SUDDEN ACCELERATION OCCURRED AGAIN, THIS TIME WHILE HIS DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING. I HAD NOTICED ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS THAT THE GAS PEDAL SEEMED TO STICK AND THE ENGINE SEEMED TO REV AND THE RPM NEEDLE WOULD INCREASE TO 3500 OR MORE EVEN THOUGH I HAD MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE. AFTER A COUPLE OF MINUTES, THE ENGINE WOULD RETURN TO NORMAL. LAST WEEK, MY CRUISE CONTROL WOULD NOT WORK, ALTHOUGH I WAS ABLE TO TURN ON THE WORD CRUISE ON THE DASH WHEN I PUSHED THE ON AND SET BUTTONS, BUT THE CRUISE DID NOT TAKE HOLD. THE ENGINE CONTINUES TO REV UP WHEN I START THE CAR AND WHEN I BRING THE CAR TO A STOP.. *TR
THE PASSENGER SEAT WEIGHT MONITOR TO ACTIVATE OR DEACTIVATE THE PASSENGER AIRBAG WILL NOT DEACTIVATE PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF LIGHT ONLY COMES ON WHEN YOU START THE CAR AND SHOULD BE ON AT ALL TIMES WHEN THE SEAT IS EMPTY OR A CHILD IS SEATED IN IT. *TR
I WAS TRAVELING ON A CITY ROAD WHEN I NOTICED MY SPEED KEPT INCREASING. I HAD TO KEEP BRAKING TO SLOW IT DOWN. IT HAS HAPPENED MORE THAN ONCE. THE MOST SCARY PART IS WHEN I WAS TRAVELING DOWN A HIGHWAY GOING 60 MPH WHEN IT STARTED SPEEDING UP ON ITS OWN. I EVEN TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE GAS PEDAL AND IT STILL KEPT INCREASING SPEED. IT WAS OVER 70 AND STILL GOING. I MANAGED TO SLOW IT DOWN (VERY HARD TO DO, AFRAID THE BRAKES WOULD FAIL). TURNING IT OFF DID NO GOOD. WHEN I STARTED IT UP AGAIN, IT WAS STILL RACING. I KICKED IT DOWN AND WENT ON MY WAY. I DO NOT USE MY CRUISE CONTROL AT ALL. I HAVE VERY LOW MILEAGE FOR THE AGE OF MY CAR. WHEN I START MY CAR UP AFTER IT'S BEEN SITTING FOR A WHILE, THE ENGINE RACES. I GIVE IT A MINUTE TO REV DOWN AND THEN GO ON MY WAY. THIS HAS HAPPENED AT LEAST A DOZEN TIMES OVER THE PAST TWO YRS. IT MAKES ME AFRAID TO GO FAST AT ALL. *TR
I WAS DRIVING AT 35-40 MPH WHEN THE CAR ACCELERATED ON ITS OWN. I HAVE TO DEPRESS THE BRAKE TO STOP THE CAR AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT BUT THE CAR STILL BATTLED HARD TO GO. I PARKED AT A NEARBY PARKING LOT AND SHIFT TO PARKING. THE ENGINE RPM WENT TO 4000 QUICKLY AND I SHUT OFF THE ENGINE. I TURNED THE ENGINE ON AND OFF A COUPLE OF TIME AND IT DID THE SAME THING EVERY TIME. I TAPPED THE GAS PEDAL REALLY HARD AND IT WENT BACK TO NORMAL. THE DAY BEFORE THIS INCIDENT, CRUISE CONTROL QUIT WORKING FOR ABOUT 3 HOURS AND FUNCTIONED WELL AGAIN. MEANWHILE, THE GAS PEDAL IS REALLY STICKY AND I HAVE VERY ROUGH IDLE IN THE MORNING. I SEARCHED THE WEB FOR SOLUTION AND OBVIOUSLY A LOT OF PEOPLE HAVE EXPERIENCED THE IDENTICAL PROBLEM ALREADY. JUST WANT TO URGE FORD RECALL THIS VEHICLE ASAP. I'M WILLING TO PROVIDE ANY INFORMATION NHTSA IN ORDER TO ENSURE THE SECURITY OF THOUSANDS OF FORD CUSTOMERS. *TR
DRIVING AT 35MPH I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE GAS PEDAL AND THE CAR CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE. I PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL AND THE RPM'S JUMPED TO 4000. I PUSHED THE PEDAL DOWN TO THE FLOOR AND THE THROTTLE BEGAN TO SLOW DOWN AND RETURN TO NORMAL. NOW RANDOMLY DURING ACCELERATION THE THROTTLE WILL STICK OPEN WHEN I TAKE MY FOOT OFF THE GAS, AND NOT RETURN TO NORMAL UNTIL AFTER PUSHING HARD DOWN ON THE GAS PEDAL. THIS WAS QUITE SCARY BEING ON THE ROAD AND HAVE MY CAR ACCELERATING OUT OF MY CONTROL. I READ THAT A CRUISE CONTROL CABLE CAN BECOME DISCONNECTED THAT CAN BE CAUSING THIS PROBLEM. *TR

THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 20 MPH, THE CONTACT DEPRESSED THE ACCELERATOR AND WHEN HE REMOVED HIS FOOT FROM THE PEDAL, THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO INDEPENDENTLY ACCELERATE. THE FAILURE CONTINUED FOR APPROXIMATELY TWO MILES UNTIL THE VEHICLE STOPPED ACCELERATING INDEPENDENTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A REPAIR SHOP WHERE THEY PROVIDED MINOR MAINTENANCE TO THE VEHICLE SEVERAL TIMES. THE REPAIR SHOP REPLACED THE IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE ALSO BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE REPAIR SHOP ALSO DISCONNECTED THE CRUISE CONTROL AS A PRECAUTIONARY MEASURE. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 140,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 FORD TAURUS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WOULD BECOME STUCK. AS A RESULT, THERE WAS AN INCREASE IN ENGINE RPMS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE THROTTLE BOX AND CABLE WERE FRACTURED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 132,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 132,500.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 FORD TAURUS. THE CONTACT WAS TRAVELING 35 MPH WHEN THE VEHICLE JERKED AND FAILED TO ACCELERATE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A PRIVATE MECHANIC WHERE THE MECHANIC CONFIRMED THAT THE TORQUE CONVERTER NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 110,000. UPDATED 7/23/12 *CN THE CONSUMER STATED THE FORWARD AND REVERSE GEAR WENT OUT ON THE VEHICLE. A MECHANIC INFORMED HER, THE SPLINE ON THE TORQUE CONVERTER FAILED. UPDATED 07/30/12
WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH AND SLOWING DOWN DUE TO TRAFFIC, THE ENGINE STARTED REVVING AT 3,000 RPM'S. I PULLED OVER IN THE NEAREST PARKING LOT AND WHILE THE CAR WAS IN PARK, THE ENGINE WAS STILL REVVING AT 3,000 RPMS. I TURNED THE CAR OFF, WAITED ABOUT 15 MINUTES AND STARTED IT UP AGAIN BUT NOTHING CHANGED. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED IN A PERIOD OF ABOUT A MONTH. IT FEELS LIKE THE GAS PEDAL IS STUCK DOWN BUT IT ISN'T. I DID MANAGE TO DRIVE THE CAR BACK TO WORK BUT IT NEVER FELL BELOW 3,000 RPMS AND FELT LIKE IT WAS JERKING FORWARD AND TRYING TO GO FASTER. WHEN I LEFT WORK ABOUT 3 HOURS LATER THE CAR WAS OK AND DRIVING HOME IT WAS OK ALSO. THE FIRST TIME THIS HAPPENED I TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALER BUT IT DIDN'T HAPPEN SO THEY SAID NOTHING WAS WRONG AND DIDN'T FIX ANYTHING. THERE SEEMS TO BE ALOT OF COMPLAINTS ON THIS ISSUE - HOW MANY MORE DOES THERE NEED TO REPORTED BEFORE FORD WILL STEP UP AND REALIZE THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THIS CAR AND ISSUE A RECALL AND HAVE IT CORRECTED BEFORE SOMEONE IS SERIOUSLY INJURED OR EVEN KILLED! *TT
WHILE DRIVING, THE CAR SPEEDS UP WITHOUT CONTROL OF THE DRIVER. THIS HAS HAPPENED THREE TIMES IN THE LAST MONTH. EACH TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED, THE CAR HAS BEEN BETWEEN 25 AND 40 MPH. THE CAR BEGINS TO SPEED UP OF ITS OWN POWER. THE SPEED WILL CONTINUE TO RISE UNLESS YOU CAN STOP THE CAR WITH PRESSURE FROM THE BRAKES. ONCE THE CAR IS SLOWED BY USE OF THE BRAKES, IT MUST BE PUT INTO PARK. ONCE IN PARK, THE RPM WILL RACE TO 3500-4500. I SWITCHED THE CAR TO REVERSE, AND ONCE MY FOOT IS REMOVED FROM THE BRAKE THE CAR SPEEDS UP. IN MY EXPERIENCE, IT TAKES TURNING OFF AND ON THE CAR A COUPLE TIMES TO CORRECT THE SITUATION. THE CAR IS CURRENTLY AT A LOCAL INDEPENDENT SHOP, AND HAS BEEN FOR THE PAST WEEK. THUS FAR, THEY HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM. PLEASE HELP WITH THIS VERY SERIOUS ISSUE.
MY WIFE AND I WERE OUT DRIVING OUR 2005 FORD TAURUS WHEN THE CAR STARTED ACCELERATING ON IT'S OWN. I WAS TRYING TO BRAKE AND THE CAR CONTINUED TO INCREASE IN SPEED. I WASN'T USING THE CRUISE CONTROL AT THE TIME, I SELDOM DO, BUT THE CRUISE CONTROL DOE'S WORK THOUGH. I WAS TURNING LEFT INTO THE SIDE ROAD LEADING TO MY HOME WHEN THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED. I APPLIED THE BRAKES (TO NO AVAIL) AND THEN SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL. ENGINE RPM EXCEEDED 3000. ABSOLUTELY FRIGHTENING! THIS AFTERNOON A PASSENGER AND I PULLED OUT ONTO THE MAIN THOROUGHFARE WHEN MY CAR (2005 TAURUS) INDEPENDENTLY ACCELERATED AND BEGAN RUNNING/SPINNING AT A HIGH RPM. THE EXPERIENCE WAS NOT UNLIKE A SELF PROPELLED VACUUM WHERE YOU LET GO AND IT WANTS TO RUN OFF BY ITSELF - ONLY THIS IS FAR MORE DANGEROUS HAVING BEEN IN TRAFFIC WITH PRECIOUS LIVES AT STAKE. IT WAS NOT WANTING ME TO BRAKE EITHER. THANKFULLY, I WAS ABLE TO PULL OFF INTO A GRAVEL LOT. I TURNED THE CAR OFF FOR A FEW MINUTES THEN STARTED IT AGAIN ONLY THAT TIME IT WAS RUNNING AT ROCKET SPEED. NEEDLESS TO SAY IT WAS UNSAFE TO DRIVE AT THAT POINT SO I HAD IT TOWED TO THE LOCAL FORD DEALER. THEY JUST CALLED TO SAY IT WAS THE "SPEED CONTROL CABLE" THAT APPEARED TO DISENGAGE AND DO SOMETHING WITH THE THROTTLE. WHILE DRIVING DOWN FIRST STREET IN WINTER HAVEN, FLORIDA THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO ACCELERATE EVEN THOUGH THE CRUISE CONTROL WAS NOT ENGAGED. THE FIRST TIME THIS HAPPENED, I WAS LEAVING THE GROCERY STORE. THE RPM WENT UP VERY HIGH, AND I COULD NOT CONTROL THE SPEED OF THE CAR. IT WAS VERY SCARY. I HAD TO PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL, WITH ENGINE STILL RUNNING, TO CONTROL IT AT STOP LIGHTS. FOR A LONG TIME, THIS WAS A CONSTANT PROBLEM, BUT I LEARNED HOW TO CONTROL IT. I COULD NOT AFFORD TO TAKE MY CAR IN TO HAVE IT CHECKED. I LEARNED THAT IF I HIT THE ACCELERATOR HARD & QUICK, IT WOULD UNSTICK. I CAN ALWAYS FEEL IT UNSTICK, AND CAN SOMETIMES EVEN HEAR A POPPING NOISE WHEN IT UNSTICKS. AS TIME WENT ON, THIS HAPPENED LESS AND LESS OFTEN. IT STILL HAPPENS NOW, BUT INFREQUENTLY, PROBABLY LESS THAN ONCE A WEEK. IN THE BEGINNING, HOWEVER, IT HAPPENED EVERY DAY AT SOME POINT DURING THE DAY. THIS IS OBVIOUSLY A HUGE PROBLEM FOR THE 2005 MODELS AS WELL AS OTHERS, AS I CAN SEE OTHERS ARE POSTING THIS SAME PROBLEM. THE WORST CASE INVOLVED AN APPROACH TO A RED TRAFFIC LIGHT AND THE BRAKES HAD TO BE FORCED AND THE AUTO PLACED IN NEUTRAL, WHERE RPM WAS OVER 3000 ON ITS OWN. NEXT DAY, NO ABNORMAL BEHAVIOR. PRIOR TO THIS MOST SERIOUS ISSUE, THE CAR HAS OCCASIONALLY STAYED AT SPEED ON THE HIGHWAY OR ACCELERATED ON ITS OWN WITHOUT THE GAS PEDAL PRESSED AND NO CRUISE CONTROL ENGAGED. WHEN I LET MY FOOT OFF THE GAS PEDAL THE ENGINE CONTINUES TO ACCELERATE. I THOUGHT IT WAS THE FLOOR MAT CATCHING ON THE GAS PEDAL. ON SATURDAY MAY 12 I WAS COMING UP MY STREET AT ABOUT 25 MPH AND THE CAR WOULDN'T STOP AND I CAME ZOOMING INTO MY DRIVEWAY. LAST WEEK MAY 24 2012 MY WIFE USED THE CAR AND SAID SHE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AND IT WASN'T THE FLOOR MAT. YESTERDAY MAY 28, 2012 AS I APPROACHED A BUSY INTERSECTION WITH A STOP SIGN I LET MY FOOT OFF THE GAS PEDAL AND THE CAR CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE INTO THE INTERSECTION. BY THE TIME I COULD REACT I WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE INTERSECTION. I JUST BARELY AVOIDED A COLLISION WITH POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY. THIS WAS THE LAST STRAW WITH THIS DANGEROUS PROBLEM, SO I PUT THE CAR IN MY GARAGE AND TOOK THE COVER OFF THE ACCELERATOR CONTROL LEAVER. I FOUND THE PROBLEM QUICKLY. THE CAUSE OF THIS UNINTENDED ACCELERATION IS THE CRUISE CONTROL CABLE HAS BECOME DISCONNECTED FROM THE THROTTLE LEAVER AND IS CATCHING ON THE THROTTLE LEAVER, SO THE LEVER CAN'T RETURN. I TRIED TO RECONNECT THIS CABLE BUT THE PLASTIC RETAINER ON THIS CHEAP CABLE HAS BECOME DEFECTIVE AND WILL NOT RECONNECT. I HAVE NOW TIED THE CABLE BACK SO IT CAN NOT INTERFERE WITH THE THROTTLE LEVER. I HAVE CONTACTED FORD ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND ISSUED A COMPLAINT. THERE ARE NO RECALLS REGARDING THIS ISSUE. THIS PROBLEM IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE AND BEYOND THE SCOPE OF VEHICLE MAINTENANCE. THIS ISSUE COULD CAUSE A FATAL ACCIDENT TO AN UNSUSPECTING DRIVER. I HAVE DOCUMENTED THIS ISSUE WITH PHOTOGRAPHS.
