Rear axle cracked in multiple locations causes car to sway and tires to turn inward and bald

The contact stated that while his girlfriend was driving approximately 10 MPH and making a left turn, a loud bang was heard from the rear of the vehicle. No warning lights were illuminated. The contact's girlfriend was able to veer to the side of the road and became aware that both the rear driver’s and passenger’s side tires were tilted inward, and the rear axle was fractured. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that the rear axle needed to be replaced. The vehicle remained with the mechanic awaiting the repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. The approximate failure mileage was 159,000.

I pulled up to a stop sign having been traveling at less then 20 mph, and only while the vehicle is in drive but not moving, it was shaking like the motor was going to jump out of the vehicle. I assumed it was the motor mount broken and took it to the mechanic and found out it was the subframe on the front passenger had corroded and had detached from the frame .I need it repaired but I don't know where to begin. Was told that there is a active recalls on this part..

ABS light, brake light came on. The seatbelt unhooks while I’m driving, I was told I had a cracked axle, the wheel bearing was very noisy, I’ve paid a lot of money to get things fixed. The labor was at a ridiculous amount on $25 parts. I’m wondering if I’ve paid to have parts fixed that were under recall. I fix one thing and then there’s another issue. Oil is leaking under the hood and I’m afraid it will catch fire so I’m scared to drive.

The driver called the contact to come to where the vehicle was pulled over to inspect the vehicle. The contact became aware that the driver’s side rear axle was fractured. REAR AXLE BROKE WHEN DRIVING SLOWLY PULLING INTO OUR DRIVEWAY ON STREET.
REAR AXLE SNAPPED IN HALF WITH NO WARNING AS I WAS DRIVING ABOUT 40 MPH ON A BUSY ROAD. VERY DANGEROUS.
ON MY 2001 FORD WINDSTAR FORD INSTALLED THESE BRACKETS ON REAR SUSPENSION SUBFRAME AND ALMOST 2 YEARS LATER MY AXLE HAS SPLIT FROM ONE SIDE ALL THE WAY AROUND TO THE OTHER AND ANY TINY BUMP YOU HIT THE VAN JUMPS ALL OVER THE ROADWAY. THEY WON'T REPAIR THE AXLE BECAUSE THE "BRACKETS " WERE INSTALLED "PROPERLY".
WHILE TRAVELING AT 60 M.P.H. , THE REAR AXLE BROKE ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE VEHICLE WHERE THE AXLE IS WELDED, RECALL NUMBER 10S13 WAS COMPLETED ON THE VEHICLE, WHERE THEY INSTALLED THE SUPPORT BRACKETS SO THE AXLE WOULDN'T BREAK, THE AXLE BROKE AN INCH AWAY FROM WHERE THE SUPPORT BRACKET WAS INSTALLED, THERE WASN'T AN ACCIDENT WITH THE VEHICLE AND NO ONE WAS HURT, BUT THIS COULD HAVE EASILY BEEN AN ACCIDENT,

THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS PREVIOUSLY REPAIRED UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 15V608000 (SUSPENSION) REGARDING THE REAR AXLE HOWEVER, THE FAILURE OCCURRED AFTER THE RECALL REPAIR WAS PERFORMED. JORDAN FORD (609 E JEFFERSON BLVD, MISHAWAKA, IN 46545; (574) 259-1981) WAS CONTACTED AND INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE REAR AXLE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED HOWEVER, THE REPAIR WAS NO LONGER COVERED UNDER THE RECALL. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND CONFIRMED WHAT THE DEALER STATED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 164,952.
THE REAR AXLE SPLIT/BROKE WHILE DRIVING 5 MPH TURNING ONTO A STREET. BOTH WHEELS ARE NOW RUBBING AGAINST THE FRAME.

Car was in an single car accident. Steering and body damage. All fixed now. Need verification for salvage sticker.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 FORD WINDSTAR. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 51 MPH, THE CONTACT NOTICED A BURNING ODOR ENTERING THE VEHICLE. IN ADDITION, THE CONTACT AND PASSENGERS HEADS WAS HITTING TOWARDS THE WINDOWS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE REAR DRIVER SIDE TIRE WAS BENT IN AND NOTICED THAT THE AXLE WAS FRACTURED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THERE WAS HOLES AND CRACKS IN AXLE CAUSING THE AXLE TO BE FRACTURED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE CONTACT CONTACTED EVANSVILLE FORD 428 N UNION RD, EVANSVILLE, WI 53536 WHERE THEY INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THEY WERE AWARE OF THE HOLE AND CRACKS BUT UNABLE TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT A YEAR AGO THAT THE VEHICLE WAS SERVICED UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 15V608000 (SUSPENSION). THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 143,000.
THE AXLE WAS PART OF RECALL #11S16. AS PART OF THE RECALL THE AXLE WAS PATCHED, BUT THE AXLE IS NOW BROKEN BECAUSE THE "REPAIR" DID NOT CORRECT THE STRUCTURAL FLAWS IN THE AXLE.
I WAS DRIVING MY VEHICLE AND THE REAR AXLE CRACK I WAS DRIVING ON A ON A CITY STREET AND WAS SCARED MY TIRES WAS RUBBING AND SMOKING.
THE REAR AXLE BROKE WHERE FORD REPAIRED IT IN 2011. THEY ARE SAYING THAT MY VAN IS OUT OF WARRANTY ON THE RECALL BECAUSE IT IS OVER 150000 MILES. IF THEY HAD REPLACED MY REAR AXLE IN 2011 INSTEAD OF A BAD PATCH JOB ON THAT RECALL I WOULDN'T BE HAVING THIS TROUBLE. I FEEL THAT SINCE FORD HAD IT UNDER RECALL IN 2011 THEY SHOULD HAVE FIXED IT RIGHT AT THAT TIME. I WENT INTO TOWN ON MONDAY 10/14/19 AND WHEN I CAME OUT OF THE STORE I NOTICED THAT THE REAR WHEELS WERE LEANING IN AGAINST THE BODY.
MOST IMPORTANT IS THE BRAKES HAVE BEEN CHANGED AND CHECKED. ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS THE BRAKES HAVE JUST FAILED AND I WOULD PUMP THEM ENOUGH JUST TO GET IN A SAFE LOCATION. AAA HAS HAD TO PICK ME UP AND WHEN THE BRAKES WHERE CHECKED THEY WERE FIND AND THE FLUID FULL. ALSO THE REAR JUST FELL BUT I HAD THAT REPAIRED BY A LOCAL REPUTABLE SHOP ON CANDLER RD, DECATUR/ THERE IS A RESIDUE ALL AROUND WHERE I PUT THE GAS IN. I'VE HAD THE SAME MECHANIC FOR ALMOST 30 YEARS AND HE SAYS THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKES MAY BE FAULTY. THE BRAKE AND ENGINE LIGHT WILL NOT GO OUT EVEN WHEN REPAIRS ARE MADE ACCORDING TO THE CODES THAT COME UP. THE SCARIEST TIME WAS WHEN I WAS DRIVING ON UNIVERSITY AVE IN ATLANTA AND THE CAR WOULD NOT STOP AT THE LIGHT AT A NORMALLY BUSY INTERSECTION. I BEGAN BLOWING THE HORN AND THANK GOODNESS NO ONE WAS AHEAD OF ME. AAA TOOK THEIR SWEET TIME COMING AND BY THE TIME THEY GOT THERE THE PEDAL WAS BACK UP BUT I HAD THEM TO TOW ME HOME ANYWAYS. MY MECHANIC CHECKED IT AND ALL WAS FIND BUT HE WAS CONCERNED AND SO WAS I. I DID NOT CONTACT FORD BUT IT HAS HAPPENED AGAIN AS I STARTED IT YESTERDAY MORNING AND THE BRAKES WERE ON THE FLOOR. THIS IS JUST TOO DANGEROUS. I TOLD MY MECHANIC NOT TO COME CHECK IT BEFORE CONTACTING FORD.
WHEN I RECEIVED THE RECALL ABOUT THE POSSIBLE AXLE CRACKING DUE RUST I TOOK MY CAR IN AND HAD THE BRACKETS PUT ON AND THEN I RECEIVED A RECALL THE HAVE THE BRACKETS CHECKED WHICH I DID AND THEY WERE CORRECT. TODAY I TOOK MY VAN IN FOR PA INSPECTION AND WAS TOLD MY REAR AXLE ON THE DRIVERS SIDE HAD A CRACK IN IT WHICH YOU COULD SEE THROUGH THE OPENING OF THE BRACKET THEY INSTALLED. WHEN I ASKED THE MECHANIC IF FORD WAS GOING TO PAY TO REPLACE IT NOW SINCE THE BRACKET DIDN'T KEEP IT FROM CRACKING HE SAID NO. THEN I ASKED IF THE BRACKET WAS STRONG ENOUGH TO HOLD IT SO I CAN KEEP DRIVING, HE SAID HE WOULDN'T TRUST IT. I ONLY HAVE A 115,500 MILES ON IT, SO WHAT I'M BASICALLY BEING TOLD IS THE MINUTE THE RECALL WENT OUT I SHOULD HAVE HAD THEM REPLACE THE AXLE, INSTEAD OF THE STUPID BRACKETS WHICH WERE JUST BAND AIDS TO PLACATE UPSET OWNERS. I ONLY HAVE ONE CAR SO I HAVE TO DRIVE IT UNTIL I CAN AFFORD TO GET IT FIXED OR BUY ANOTHER CAR. I'M JUST ONE PERSON, HOW MANY MORE ARE FACED WITH THE SAME SITUATION. I ONLY HAVE UNTIL OCTOBER WHEN MY INSPECTION EXPIRES AND I'M PANICKING TRYING TO FIGURE WHAT I CAN DO. FORD KNEW THOSE BRACKET S AT BEST JUST BOUGHT THE OWNERS A COUPLE OF MORE YEARS BEFORE THEIR CARS COULD AGAIN BE A HIGHWAY HAZARD. IT'S STILL RUSSIAN ROULETTE IN MY OPINION THE AXLE AT A MINIMUM SHOULD BE REPLACE WITH A DISCOUNT TO THE ORIGINAL OWNERS.
FORD AXLE RECALL IN CERTAIN STATES. I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP APPROXIMMENTLY 5 MONTHS AGO. THEY SAID BRACKETS WERE OK. AXLE BROKE 08/26/2019 MILEAGE ON VEHICLE 100607. VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION, VAN ALMOST FLIP. TIRES ARE ANGLED OUT AND RUINED.

THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TOWED TO A DEALER OR AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING OR REPAIRS. THE MANUFACTURER INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE RECALL WAS NO LONGER ACTIVE AND DID NOT OFFER FURTHER ASSISTANCE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 182,000.
GOOD DAY, I WAS DRIVING ON A ROAD GOING 40 MPH WHEN MY REAR AXLE CRACKED AND MY REAR WHEELS CAVED IN. I HAD MY WIFE AND KIDS IN THE VAN WITH ME ON THE WAY TO WORK. IT WAS AROUND 5:45 WHEN THIS HAPPENED. I WAS ABLE TO REGAIN CONTROL. LUCKILY NO ONE WAS HURT. IS THERE'S A WAY I COULD GET HELP??

HE CHECKED UNDER THE VEHICLE AND NOTICED THAT THE REAR AXLE WAS FRACTURED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO A DEALER OR AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER AND WAS INFORMED THAT, DUE TO THE AGE OF THE VEHICLE, THEY COULD NOT ASSIST AND REPAIR THE VEHICLE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 182,000.

THE TECHNICIAN, HOWEVER, STATED THAT THERE WAS NO RECALL. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND STATED THAT THERE WAS NO RECALL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 106,031.
DRIVING UNDER 30 MPH AND NOTICED A STRANGE SOUND PULLED OFF THE STREET AND INSPECTED REAR DRIVERS TIRE WAS LEANING AND DISCOVERED REAR AXLE WAS BROKEN

THE VEHICLE WAS THEN TOWED TO ANOTHER INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE AND THAT THE FRAME WAS RUSTED. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 FORD WINDSTAR. WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS UNDERGOING A ROUTINE CHECK-UP AT AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC SHOP, THE TECHNICIAN NOTICED THAT THE SUBFRAME WAS RUSTED. THE CONTACT WAS ADVISED NOT TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO BENNA FORD SUPERIOR (715-394-8669, LOCATED AT 3022 TOWER AVE, SUPERIOR, WI 54880) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE SUBFRAME WAS RUSTED OUT AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE AND STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS DUE TO THE AGE OF THE VEHICLE AND THE MILEAGE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 250,000.
THIS VAN LOOKS FINE ON THE OUTSIDE,BUT THE FRAME AND FLOOR ARE RUSTED OUT. I WAS DRIVING ON A CITY STREET WHEN THE BRAKES WENT OUT AND WHEN I TOOK IT TO BE REPAIRED THE MECHANIC AT CARLS BODY SHOP , WHERE IT WAS TI BE REPAIRED TOLD ME IT WAS BEYOND REPAIR AND UNSAFE TO DRIVE. THE VAN IS MADE TO TRANSPORT A WHEELCHAIR AND THE AREA WHERE THE WHEELCHAIR IS RUSTED THE WORST. THE MECHANIC ALSO TOOK PICTURES OF THE UNDER BODY TO SHOW ME HOW BAD IT REALLY WAS.
AXLE SNAPPED WHILE DRIVING ON HIGHWAY REAR WHEELS BENT INWARD.
1. REAR AXLE FRACTURED SEVERELY & BROKE MAKING THE CAR UN-DRIVABLE ON 24 JAN 2019 WHILE IN MOTION DRIVING IN CITY TRAFFIC. FORD PUT BRACES ON THIS VEHICLE UNDER RECALL# 10S13, BUT THEY FAILED TO PREVENT FURTHER CORROSION AND METAL FATIGUE. THE AXLE WAS A BAD ENGINEERING DESIGN FROM THE DRAWING BOARD COMBINED WITH NOT E-COATING THE METAL DURING MANUFACTURING TO PREVENT CORROSION OF THE METAL DUE TO ROAD SALT. THE AXLE FRACTURED NEXT TO THE BRACE ON THE DRIVER SIDE AS SHOWN IN THE 4 IMAGES BELOW. I HAVE ONE TOW BILL (FLAT-BED) TO GET THE CAR OFF THE DOWNTOWN STREET TO MY HOME & WILL HAVE ANOTHER TOW BILL TO TRANSPORT IT TO WHERE I CAN REPLACE THE AXLE. 2. FRONT CRADLE FRAME'S MOUNT RUSTED OFF THAT ANCHORS THE STABILIZER BAR SO THE STABILIZER BAR HAD TO BE REMOVED. THIS HAPPENED SEVERAL YEARS AGO. THE CRADLE FRAME PROBABLE WAS NOT E-COATED DURING MANUFACTURE EITHER. I CAN TAKE A PIC AND PROBABLE HAVE THE REPAIR INVOICE DETAILING THE DATE AND THE MECHANIC'S WORK TO REMOVE THE STABILIZER BAR. TO FIX THE CAR WILL NEED A NEW FRONT CRADLE FRAME, STABILIZER BAR, AND POSSIBLY MOUNT BRACKETS.

THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND DID NOT ASSIST. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 280,000.

REAR AXLE BREAK DUE TO CORROSION OF ACKNOWLEDGED INADEQUATELY DESIGNED AXLE. BREAK HAPPENED IN THE REINFORCEMENT BRACKET INSTALLED DO TO INITIAL AXLE RECALL FOR POTENTIAL BREAK DUE TO CORROSION.. CAR WAS ON CITY STREET IN MOTION TO FREEWAY ONRAMP FORTUNATELY THE AXLE BROKE PRIOR TO ENTERING FREEWAY. AXLE BREAK RESULTED IN SAGGING AXLE AND A WHEEL TILTED INWARD AT ABOUT 20 DEGREES AND WEDGED AGAINST THE INNER WHEEL WELL. TIRE STARTED TO SMOKE. CAR IS UNDRIVEABLE. THE REPAIR IS ESTIMATED TO $1400. FORD WILL NOT ACCEPT ANY FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS BREAK IN THE BRACKETS INSTALLED TO PREVENT THE BREAK. ADDITIONAL COMPONENTS ARE ALSO NEEDING REPAIR AND REPLACEMENT DUE TO THE BREAK OF THE AXLE.

REAR AXLE IS CRACKED AFTER BRACKETS WERE PUT ON DUE TO RECALL. WE NOTICED THIS IS AN OLD CRACK AND SAW IT WHILE CHECKING FOR THE CAUSE OF A RATTLE NOISE. WE HAVE NO IDEA WHEN THE CRACK OCCURRED BUT THE RECALL BRACKETS WERE PUT ON SEVERAL YEARS AGO BY KELLER BROS. FORD LEBANON, PA. THEY REINSPECTED THE BRACKETS AND SAID THEY WERE PUT ON CORRECTLY. IF THAT'S THE CASE; WHY DID THE AXLE CRACK? WHY WON'T FORD PAY TO HAVE IT FIXED IF IT'S KNOWN TO HAVE A PROBLEM CRACKING?
DRIVING HOME I HEARD A THUD AND MY 2001 FORD WINDSTAR SPUN OFF THE ROAD. TURNS OUT THE AXLE CRACKED IN HALF AND ALMOST KILLED ME. TOWED THE CAR INTO THE FORD DEALERSHIP AND EVEN THOUGH THERE IS AN OPEN SAFETY RECALL ON MY WINDSTAR AND FORD KNOWS OF THOUSAND OF AXLE PROBLEMS THEY SAID THAT IT IS NOT COVERED. FORD'S WAY OF GETTING PUT OF IT EVEN THOUGH MY BROTHERS 2003 WINDSTAR AXLE FAILED AND YET FORD COVERED THAT ONE. THIS IS NOT RIGHT. THEY KNOW THERE AXLES ARE BAD AND HAVE HAD THREE SAFETY RECALLS ON THESE AXLES.
THIS VAN WAS RECALLED FOR KNOWN ISSUES WITH THE REAR AXLE CORRODING. THIS RECALL INVOLVED INSTALLING SUPPORT BRACKETS ON THE AXLE. THE AXLE HAS NOW CRACKED ALMOST ALL THE WAY THROUGH NEXT TO THE BRACKET. THIS HAPPENED WHILE GOING OVER A SPEED BUMP SLOWLY. FROM MY RESEARCH ONLINE, THIS SEEMS TO BE A COMMON ISSUE WITH THE REPAIR THAT WAS ISSUED IN THIS RECALL.
REMOVED SUBFRAME TO REPLACE FAULTY TORQUE CONVERTER. FOUND SUBSTANTIAL RUSTING AT FIREWALL END OF SUBFRAME ON BOTH "ARMS", REQUIRING REPLACEMENT OF SUBFRAME. CALLED LOCAL DEALERS, NO "OPEN" RECALL (OVER 15 YEAR-OLD VAN) AND $4,900 NEW SUBFRAME QUOTE PROVIDED, WITH NO DEALER OR MANUFACTURER COVERAGE, AFTER CALLING NATIONAL AND CANADIAN MFCTR RECALL NUMBERS. MFCTR/DEALERS OF NO ASSISTANCE, WHATSOEVER. PART NOT ACTUALLY AVAILABLE.
BRAKES CONTINUALLY HAVE FAILED CAUSING ACCIDENTS. PEDAL GOES ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR BEFORE AND AFTER NEW BRAKE PADS AND BRING BLED.THROTTLE IDLE SENSOR CAUSES VEHICLE TO STALL WHILE DRIVING. ABS LIGHT AND BRAKE LIGHT AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT KEEPS COMING ON. NOW THEY JUST STAY ON. I NEED TO KNOW WHAT,IF ANY RECALLS HAVE BEEN REPAIRED OR ANY OPTIONS THAT MAY BE AVAILABLE.

THE LOCAL DEALER CONTACTED THE MANUFACTURER AND WAS INFORMED THAT THEY WOULD COVER THE INSPECTION; HOWEVER, THE VEHICLE REPAIRS WOULD BE THE CONTACT'S RESPONSIBILITY. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN.
