BRAKE LIGHTS COME ON WHEN VEHICLE IS OFF AND THEY WILL STAY ON AFTER YOU REMOVE YOUR FOOT FROM THE PEDAL. WE HAVE HAD THE BRAKE PEDAL SWITCH REPLACED 2 TIMES ALREADY AND IT KEEPS HAPPENING. IF THE LIGHTS COME ON IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT (HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES), THE VAN WILL NOT START IN THE MORNING. THIS REMAINS AN ONGOING PROBLEM WHICH THE REPAIR SHOP CAN NOT FIX AND RECOMMENDED THAT WE FILE THIS REPORT. THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS. THE VAN SOMETIMES SMELLS HOT INSIDE IF WE CATCH IT BEFORE THE BATTERY GOES DEAD. I'M NOT SURE WHAT TO PUT FOR THE APPROXIMATE INCIDENT DATE SO I WILL PUT TODAY'S DATE SINCE IT DID IT AGAIN TODAY. *TR
I PULLED INTO DRIVEWAY AND PUT CAR IN PARK AND WENT INTO BACK OF MY WINDSTAR TO CHECK TO SEE IF THE AIRCONTIONING VENTS WERE WORKING PER THE REQUEST OF MY SON. I WAS BACK THERE FOR SEVERAL MINUTES. I GOT OUT AND WAS STANDING OUTSIDE THE DRIVERS OPEN FRONT DOOR TO TURN OFF CAR. MY SON WAS IN BACK SEAT WITH HIS DOOR OPEN AND OUT OF SEAT BELT. WHILE STANDING NEXT TO OPEN DOOR MY CAR STARTED TO BACK OUT OF DRIVE WAY WHILE IT WAS IN PARK. I TRIED TO STOP IT WITH MY ARM BY TRYING TO JUMP INTO CAR TO TURN IT OFF SINCE MY SON WAS IN CAR. IT KEPT ROLLING DOWN MY DRIVEWAY AS I TRIED TO CATCH CAR. IT STOPPED BY CRASHING INTO MY NEIGHBOR'S CAR THAT WAS PARKED IN THE STREET. THE CAR WAS STILL IN PARK .POLICE CAME. FILED CLAIM WITH INSURANCE COMPANY. I WENT TO HOSPITAL FOR MY FOOT THAT WAS DRAGGED ON PAVEMENT DURING MY PURSUIT TO CATCH MY CAR. I NOTIFIED THE DEALER AND THEY TOLD ME TO CONTACT FORD DIRECTLY. I FILLED OUT CLAIM AND I JUST RECEIVED LETTER SAYING THEY CAN'T DETERMINE IF THERE WAS A DEFECT. I READ IN THE PAPER LAST WEEK THIS HAPPENED TO A WOMAN WITH A FORD EXPEDITION BUT HER CAR RAN OVER SOMEONE. ALSO A FORD SERVICEMAN JUST SAID KEEP PUTTING EMERGENCY BRAKE ON AND NEVER GET OUT OF CAR WITH CAR RUNNING. I WAS ALSO TOLD I CANT' HAVE IT CHECKED OUT BECAUSE FORD WANTS ORIGINAL PARTS AND WON'T PAY FOR ANYTHING UNTIL WE CAN PROVE A DEFECTIVE PART. I AM VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY OF MY VEHICLE. SINCE THE ACCIDENT, I HAVE BEEN FOLLOWING THE FORD'S SERVICE MAN'S ADVICE BY ALWAYS MAKING SURE PARKING BREAK IS ON AND NOT ALLOWING ANYONE TO GET OUT OF THE CAR UNTIL IT IS TURNED OFF. I HAVE TWO CHILDREN AND NEED MY CAR CHECKED IMMEDIATELY. IT IS VERY FORTUNATE THAT NO ONE WAS OUTSIDE PLAYING WHEN MY CAR STARTING BACKING DOWN THE DRIVEWAY WHILE IN PARK. *TR
FOR THE PAST SEVERAL YEARS MY VAN HAS HAS INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS WITH THE BRAKE LIGHTS ON DASH APPEARING WHILE DRIVING THE CAR AT VARIOUS SPEEDS. ONCE I STOP THE CAR AND TURN IT OFF THE LIGHTS WILL USUALLY DISAPPEAR BUT SOMETIMES WILL COME BACK WITHIN MINUTES OF RESTARTING CAR. THIS TENDS TO HAPPEN DURING WARMER TIMES OF YEAR VERSUS WINTER. ALSO I HAVE NOTICED A PROBLEM WITH BRAKES EVEN RIGHT AFTER GETTING THEM REPLACED. THE MECHANIC SAYS THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE BRAKES?? AROUND THE SAME TIME THIS STARTED TO HAPPEN MY CRUISE CONTROL STOPPED WORKING. I HAD RECIEVED A NOTICE FROM FORD ABOUT CRUISE CONTROL RECALL BUT WHEN I CALLED THE LOCAL DEALER AND TOLD THEM THAT MY CRUISE CONTROL WAS NOT WORKING AND I WAS WONDERING IF IT HAD SOMETHING TO DO WITH RECALL THEY SAID NO, THAT WAS NOT THE PROBLEM. *TR
FAILURE OF THE ABS MODULE ON MY 2002 FORD WINDSTAR VAN. *TR
2002 FORD WINDSTAR BRAKE WARNING LIGHT ON DASHBOARD AND ABS WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATE AFTER CAR HAS WARMED UP. MECHANICS HAVE CHECKED BRAKES THEMSELVES AND FOUND NO MECHANICAL REASON FOR THESE LIGHTS. ALSO HAVE EVIDENCE OF LEAK IN AREA OF ELECTRIC SWITCH RELATED TO THIS SYSTEM. *TR
I OWN A 2002 FORD WINDSTAR SEL. RECENTLY HAD TWO MESSAGES OF LOW BRAKE FLUID. ABS BRAKE WARNING LIGHTS ALSO COME ON AND OFF ON INSTRUMENT PANEL. CRUISE CONTROL STOPS WORKING FROM TIME TO TIME. THEN ON AUG 4, THE ENTIRE INSTRUMENT PANEL WENT HAYWIRE, AND AIR CONDITIONER STOPPED COOLING. HAVING IT LOOKED AT TOMORROW, BUT THIS SOUNDS LIKE LEAKING BRAKE FLUID FROM BAD SWITCH HAS CAUSED ELECTRICAL MELTDOWN. NO FIRE - YET. *TR
I HAVE HAD A CONTINUAL BRAKE FLUID LEAK ON THIS VEHICLE. IN ADDITION, WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE ON 08/06/2009, THE ABS LIGHT AND BRAKE LIGHT SUDDENLY CAME ON, AND THE SPEEDOMETER, ODOMETER, AND AIR CONDITIONING STOPPED WORKING. MY MECHANIC REPLACED THE #10 FUSE, WHICH FIXED THE PROBLEM FOR ONE DAY, THEN THE FUSE BLEW AGAIN. THE FORD TROUBLE CODE C1185 CAME UP ON THE DIAGNOSTIC COMPUTER, AND MY MECHANIC SUGGESTED I REPLACE THE ABS MODULE. LOOKING AT THE SWITCH IN QUESTION, IT IS COVERED IN BRAKE FLUID. I NOW HAVE NO AIR CONDITIONING, SPEEDOMETER, ODOMETER, OR ABS SYSTEM FUNCTIONALITY, ALONG WITH A CHRONIC BRAKE FLUID LEAK. PLEASE INVESTIGATE THIS AND MAKE FORD RECALL EITHER THE DEFECTIVE ABS MODULE, THE BRAKE DEACTIVATION SWITCH, AND THE LEAKY MASTER CYLINDER! HOPEFULLY, ALL THREE OF THESE ITEMS WILL BE INCLUDED IN A RECALL! *TR
ABS LIGHT AND BRAKE LIGHT COMING ON AND STAYING ON FOR UNKNOWN REASONS. WHEN LIGHT IS ON THE ABS BRAKES DO NOT WORK RIGHT. MECHANIC HAS CHECKED IT MANY, MANY TIMES AND EACH TIME GETS A DIFFERENT CODE. LIGHT COMES ON INTERMITTENT. COMES ON REGARDLESS OF HOW LONG DRIVEN THAT DAY, WEATHER, TEMPERATURE, OR ANY OTHER CHANGES. THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN ONGOING FOR AT LEAST A YEAR. *TR
MY 2002 FORD WINDSTAR 'S ABS & BRAKE LIGHT ILLUMINATES ALL THE TIME. SOMETIMES I HIT A BUMP IN THE ROAD AND THE LIGHT WILL GO OUT FOR A TIME AND RETURN AGAIN WITH ANOTHER BUMP OR JUST COMES ON IN ABOUT 20 TO 30 MINUTES. I LIVE IN NC AND I DON'T SEE MY STATE ON THE RECALL LIST. I SEE OTHERS HAVE THE SAME COMPLAINT. THE DEALERSHIP SAYS THE COST IS $1000 TO REPAIR. IT SHOULD BE FREE. HE SAYS A SENSOR IN THE REAR AXLE OR FRACTURE I MAYBE THE PROBLEM. IF THIS IS THE PROBLEM IT COULD CAUSE AN INCREASE OF A CRASH. THE WHEELS ARE PREVENTED FROM LOCKING. *TR
THE SPEEDOMETER STICKS WHEN THE CRUISE CONTROL IS TURNED ON. THE DASH LIGHTS WERE SHOWING THE EXCLAMATION MARK. I AM LOOKING INTO GETTING THIS FIXED BUT IT SHOULD BE TAKEN CARE OF BY FORD. IT IS AN OBVIOUS ENGINEERING FLAW WITH THE BRAKE PRESSURE DEACTIVATION SWITCH. *TR
ABS, TRACTION, AND BRAKE LIGHT COMES ON. *TR
ALL AT ONCE, BRAKE LIGHT AND ABS LIGHT CAME ON, O/D OFF LIGHT FLASHING. SPEEDOMETER AND ODOMETER CEASED TO FUNCTION. CRUISE CONTROL NOT WORKING. OCCURS IMMEDIATELY UPON STARTING VEHICLE. PER MECHANIC, NEEDS NEW ABS MODULE, FUSES HOWEVER NONE ARE CURRENTLY AVAILABLE IN MY AREA. THEY ARE WAITING FOR THE DEALER TO GET A PART - ESTIMATING 2-3 DAYS. *TR
1. NORMAL DRIVING ALTHOUGH PROBLEM INCREASES WITH WARMER WEATHER. 2. ABS AND BRAKE LIGHTS ILLUMINATE CONSECUTIVELY AND ABS BRAKE SYSTEM DEACTIVATES INCREASING STOPPING DISTANCES DESPITE FUSIBLE LINK INSTALLED BY LOCAL FORD DEALER UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER : 09V399000 3. FORD DEALER AND INDEPENDENT SHOP SCAN CODE C1185 HOWEVER PARTS REPLACEMENT DOES NOT REMEDY. *TR
BOTH THE YELLOW AND RED BRAKE LIGHT COMES ON. BAD ANTI-LOCK BRAKE CONTROL UNIT. *TR
PURCHASED A 2002 WINDSTAR XL FROM A DEALER FEB 2009. ALL HAPPENED IN A 12 WEEK PERIOD. ENGINE , ABS, AND BRAKE LIGHTS CAME ON AS I LEFT THE LOT FROM DEALER. WENT TO HAVE CHECKED OUT AND I WAS TOLD I HAD A MISFIRE IN #5 PLUG AND REPLACED INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKETS, NEW PLUGS, WIRES, OIL CHANGED. HAD AN OIL LEAK 2 DAYS LATER AND WENT BACK AND PLUG IN OIL PAN REPLACED. ENGINE LIGHT STAYED OFF 1 WEEK AND THEN STARTED SMELLING ANTIFREEZE THROUGH A/C VENTS. HEATER CORE IS BAD IN IT TOO SO I HAD THE HEATER CORE BYPASSED AS A TEMPORARY FIX. ENGINE LIGHT, ABS LIGHT & BRAKE LIGHT WAS OFF FOR 2 HOURS THEN CAME BACK ON. FOUND THE CRUISE CONTROL DEACTIVATION SWITCH WAS UNPLUGGED AND PLUGGED IT IN AND THEN IT BLEW A RELAY FUSE IN THE BOX NEXT TO THE BATTERY. REPLACED AND LEFT IT UNPLUGGED. THIS CONTROLS THE GAUGES ON INSTRUMENT PANEL, A/C, AND CRUISE CONTROL. I REPLACED THE CRUISE CONTROL DEACTIVATION SWITCH AND IT BURNED THE WIRES WHEN ENGINE WAS STARTED. OVERHEATING OF WIRES CAUSED THE MELTING OF WIRES. I HAD HOOD OPEN SO STOPPED ENGINE BEFORE WIRES IGNITED. *TR
BRAKE AND ABS LIGHTS COME ON IN HOT WEATHER. *TR
I WAS TRAVELING AT APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH, HEARD AN UNUSUAL NOISE, FELT LIKE I HIT A BUMP, MOMENTARILY LOST CONTROL OF VEHICLE, TRAVELED APPROXIMATELY 50 MORE FEET TO SIDE OF ROAD WITH ALL KINDS OF INTERMITTENT BUMPING, SCREECHING AND UNUSUAL SOUNDS. I GOT OUT AND SAW MY DRIVER'S SIDE REAR TIRE FOLDED INTO THE WHEEL-WELL. I SAW THE SAME THING ON THE OTHER SIDE. HAD TO HAVE A FLATBED TAKE IT TO A GARAGE. REAR AXLE HAD BROKEN IN TWO AND WILL BE REPLACED. THERE IS SOME OTHER POSSIBLE DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT NEAR REAR AXLE THAT HAS YET TO BE DETERMINED. *TR
REAR AXLE BROKE, WHICH COULD HAVE CAUSED A SERIOUS ACCIDENT IF I WERE ON THE HIGHWAY. I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD, EVERYTIME I TURNED TO THE RIGHT I WOULD HEAR A SQUEAKING NOISE. I DID NOT THINK MUCH OF IT UNTIL I STARTED TO SMELL SOMETHING WHEN I LOOKED IN THE REAR VIEW MIRROR I NOTICED SMOKE COMING FROM THE REAR DRIVER'S SIDE WHEEL. I PULLED OVER AND CALLED AAA. THANK GOD, WHEN THE VAN WAS LOOKED AT WE FOUND THAT THE REAR AXLE WAS BROKEN AND THE WHEEL WAS RUBBING AGAINST THE INSIDE OF THE WHEEL WELL. WHEN STOPPED THE TIRES ON THE BACK OF THE VAN LOOKED AS THOUGH THE TIRES WERE BENT IN AS A DIRECT RESULT OF THE BROKEN AXLE. I AM SO HAPPY MY CHILDREN WERE NOT IN THE VAN BECAUSE THIS COULD HAVE RESULTED IN A VERY BAD ACCIDENT. FORD NEEDS TO STEP UP AND FIX THIS PROBLEM, I HAVE SEEN QUITE A FEW COMPLAINTS REGARDING THIS ISSUE. *TR
WHILE DRIVING HOME ONE NIGHT HEADLIGHTS, AND SIGNAL LIGHTS STOPPED WORKING (LIGHTS IN BACK CONTINUED TO FUNCTION) ODOMETER STOPPED ILLUMINATING, AND MESSAGE PANEL DISPLAYED INCONSISTENTLY. ABS LIGHT CAME ON RANDOMLY AT TIMES, AND EVENTUALLY, THE SPEEDOMETER STOPPED WORKING. AFTER SEVERAL HOURS OF LABOR TRACKING DOWN THE PROBLEM, THE G.E.M. MODULE WAS REPLACED (AT GREAT COST). AFTER REPLACING THE G.E.M. MODULE, IT BECAME APPARENT THAT THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER WAS BAD AND NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. UNFORTUNATELY, THESE PARTS ARE ON BACKORDER AND OUR ONLY CAR HAS NOW BEEN IN THE SHOP FOR MORE THAN TWO WEEKS AND NOBODY CAN GIVE US ANY IDEA WHEN THE PART WILL BE AVAILABLE AND WHEN THE CAR WILL BE REPAIRED. FURTHERMORE, THE FORD DEALERSHIP WHERE OUR CAR SITS IN AN UNDRIVABLE STATE (THE REPAIR DEPARTMENT TOLD US THAT THERE IS A RISK OF FIRE IF WE WERE TO DRIVE IT) TOLD US THAT THERE ARE THREE OTHER WINDSTARS THERE WAITING FOR THE SAME PART, AND AGREED WITH US (OFF THE BOOKS) THAT CONSIDERING THE QUANTITY OF PROBLEMS THEY ARE SEEING WITH THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER THERE SHOULD HAVE BEEN A RECALL. *TR
SUDDEN ACCELERATION AT A STOP LIGHT ON 2 OCC. *TR
MY BRAKE PRESSURE DEACTIVATION SWITCH HAS FAILED AND IS ALLOWING BRAKE FLUID TO LEAK FROM MY MASTER CYLINDER ONTO MY ABS SYSTEM. MY CAR IS A 2002 FORD WINDSTAR VAN. I NOTICED IT ABOUT 3 WEEKS AGO WHEN I HAD TO ADD FLUID TO MY MASTER CYLINDER (THE BRAKE LIGHT ON THE DASH CAME ON). THIS FIXED THE PROBLEM FOR A FEW DAYS BUT THEN THE LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN. I HAVE BEEN ADDING FLUID, BUT THE BAD SWITCH ALLOWS IT TO LEAK OUT EVERY COUPLE OF DAYS. TO BE SAFE, I AM REPLACING THE SWITCH AND THE MASTER CYLINDER. I WILL HAVE THE OLD SWITCH AVAILABLE. *TR
ABS AND BRAKE LIGHTS KEEP COMING ON. CRUISE CONTROL NOT WORKING. SPEEDOMETER, ODOMETER AND AIRCONDITIONING HAVE ALSO STOPPED WORKING. DUE TO SHORT IN THE CRUISE CONTROL DISABLE SWITCH AKA BRAKE PRESSURE DIFFERENTIAL DEACTIVATION SWITCH LOCATED UNDER THE MASTER CYLINDER CAUSED FROM BRAKE FLUID LEAKING ONTO IT. THIS IN TURN BLEW THE #10 FUSE. THIS SWITCH IS COVERED WITH BRAKE FLUID AND COULD START A FIRE AT ANY TIME. I HAVE STOPPED DRIVING IT UNTIL I CAN REPLACE THE SWITCH AND CLEAN OFF THE BRAKE FLUID. *TR

WE HAVE A 2002 WINDSTAR WITH 165K MILES. THE ABS /BRAKE LIGHT HAS INTERMITTENTLY COME OFF AND ON FOR THE LAST 2 YEARS. I NOTICED THAT LAST YEAR MY CRUISE CONTROL BEGAN TO PERIODICALLY WORK. ON WEDNESDAY JULY 8TH I STARTED THE VAN AND NOTICED WHITE SMOKE POURING FROM THE HOOD. I IMMEDIATELY SHUT THE VEHICLE OFF AND TRACED THE SMOKE TO THE BRAKE PRESSURE DEACTIVATION SWITCH. I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT IT WAS UNTIL I READ THIS ARTICLE WWW.FORDWINDSTARRECALL.INFO THIS WAS EXTREMELY HELPFUL AND SAVED ME TIME ON ESTIMATING THE PROBLEM. THE SWITCH HAD BURNED AND THE PLASTIC SWITCH WAS DRIPPING THE MELTED FIRE PLASTIC INTO MY MOTOR! *TR
ABS AND BRAKE LIGHT ON INTERMITTENTLY. TOOK TO DEALERSHIP AND TOLD THAT THE FOLLOWING CODES WERE SHOWING UP: C1185, C1242, C1198, C1254, C1250. THEY REPLACED THE BA CONTROL AT A COST OF $981.21. *TR

BRAKING DISTANCE HAS SUDDENLY INCREASED ALONG WITH ABS AND BRAKE LIGHT INTERMITTENTLY ON. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 FORD WINDSTAR. THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE INSTRUMENT PANEL LIGHTS AND THE POWER LOCKS WERE FAILING. HE REPLACED THE FUSE SEVERAL TIMES AND SMELLED A BURNING ODOR UNDERNEATH THE HOOD OF THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT FOUND FLUID LEAKING FROM THE VEHICLE, WHICH ORIGINATED FROM THE CRUISE CONTROL. THE WIRING HARNESS WAS DAMAGED. THE DEALER REPLACED THE CRUISE CONTROL WIRING HARNESS, SWITCH, AND THE SPEEDOMETER WIRING HARNESS AT THE COST OF $888. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 07V336000 (VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL); THEREFORE, THEY WOULD NOT ASSIST. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 80,000.
2002 FORD WINDSTAR YELLOW ABS LIGHT ON WITH RED BRAKE LIGHT INTERMITTENTLY, STARTED LAST WEEK. CHECKED WITH ALL BRAKES WITH NO PROBLEM. BOTH BRAKE AND ABS WORK JUST FINE. *TR
2002 FORD WINDSTAR SE REAR AXEL SEVERED....BASED UPON MY RESEARCH MANY OTHERS HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME ISSUE BETWEEN 2000 AND 2003. I ALSO CONTACTED SEVERAL FORD DEALER WHO HAVE INFORMED ME THAT THEY HAVE SOLD AN EXTRAORDINARY AMOUNT OF THESE REAR AXLES. PLEASE MAKE FORD ISSUE A SAFETY RECALL ON THESE AXLES. THEY WILL NOT TAKE VOLUNTARY RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS OBVIOUS DEFECTIVE PART. SOMEONE IS GOING TO GET KILLED IF THIS DEFECTIVE PART FAILS AT 65 MILES PER HOUR. YOU WILL ALSO BE RESPONSIBLE IF YOU DO NOTHING ABOUT THIS! *TR
RECENTLY PURCHASED 2002 FORD WINDSTAR MINI VAN. UPON RESEARCH FOUND THAT THE PREVALENT PROBLEMS WITH THIS MODEL COULD RESULT IN BRAKE DAMAGE, FIRE, AND LOSS OF VEHICLE. TOOK VEHICLE IN FOR BRAKE DIAGNOSTIC TEST AND FOUND THAT IT HAS THE SAME ISSUE AS MANY OTHERS OF THIS MODEL. QUOTED $2100.00 REPAIRS. WHY IS FORD NOT RECALLING THESE VANS? *TR
THIS HAPPENED TO MY 2002 FORD WINDSTAR MINIVAN. I PULLED IN MY DRIVE WAY AND MY CAR WAS POURING DARK GRAY SMOKE. I TURNED OFF THE CAR AND POPPED THE HOOD. THE SMOKE BEGAN TO DISSIPATE AND I DISCOVERED THE SOURCE OF THE SMOKE WAS COMING FROM A "PLUG" UNDERNEATH THE MASTER CYLINDER FOR THE BRAKES. IT CONTINUED TO SMOKE FOR ABOUT AN HOUR THEN IT STOPPED. WHEN I TRIED TO START THE CAR AGAIN THE ODOMETER WAS BLANK, THE SPEEDOMETER WOULD NOT REGISTER AND ALL THE BRAKE LIGHTS (ON THE DASH WARNING LIGHTS) WERE ON. IT IS AT THE SHOP, THEY SAY FUSES ARE ALSO BLOWN AND I AM ALREADY $180.00 INTO THE REPAIR, BUT IF THE ABS COMPUTER DOES NOT GO BACK ON I WILL HAVE TO TAKE IT TO THE DEALERSHIP!!!! *TR
I HAVE A PERSISTENT PROBLEM WITH THE RED BRAKE LIGHT AND THE ABS LIGHT ILLUMINATING ON THE DASHBOARD OF MY 2002 FORD WINDSTAR. THROUGH ON LINE RESEARCH I HAVE DISCOVERED THAT THE ISSUE IS LEAKING BRAKE FLUID THAT CAN CAUSE A FIRE. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY FORD HAS NOT RECALLED THE VEHICLES TO REPAIR THE PROBLEM. I CONFIRMED WITH FORD TODAY THAT THERE IS NO SUCH RECALL. I AM HAVING THE PROBLEM REPAIRED TOMORROW AND WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE NHTSA TAKE ACTION AGAINST FORD ON THIS ISSUE. *TR
FORD / WINDSTAR ABS & BRAKE LIGHTS COME ON WHEN OUTSIDE TEMPERATURES ARE WARM. THE FORD DEALERSHIP TELLS ME THE ABS MODULE IS DEFECTIVE AND NEEDS TO BE REPLACED AT A COST OF AROUND $600.00 FOR PART AND LABOR. THOUSANDS OF WINDSTAR OWNERS ARE HAVING THIS SAME PROBLEM! I HAD THE CRUISE DEACTIVATION SWITCH REPLACE AND THE NEW HARNESS INSTALLED. HOWEVER THE ABS & BRAKE LIGHTS ARE STILL ON BECAUSE THE ABS MODULE IS DEFECTIVE. 2002 FORD WINDSTAR KEEPS DISPLAYING CHECK ABS OR CHECK TRACTION CONTROL ON THE MESSAGE CENTER. THEN THE ABS OR TRAC LIGHT TURNS ON THE DASH. AFTER CAR IS RESTARTED THE MESSAGES GO AWAY. I OWN A 2002 FORD WINDSTAR AND A COUPLE MONTHS AGO MY VAN ALMOST CAUGHT FIRE BECAUSE OF THE BRAKE DEACTIVATION SWITCH UNDER THE MASTER CYLINDER SHORTED OUT. IT STARTED LEAKING BRAKE FLUID IMMEDIATELY. I TOOK IT TO MY MECHANIC TO HAVE IT FIXED AND HE TOLD ME THEY WERE HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THESE SWITCHES SHORTING OUT AND CATCHING THE AUTOMOBILE ON FIRE. A MONTH AGO MY ABS BRAKE LIGHT CAME ON AND A FEW DAYS LATER THE # 10 FUSE BLEW AND SMOKE STARTED COMING OUT FROM UNDER THE VAN. WE IMMEDIATELY DISCONNECTED ALL THE FUSES ASSOCIATED WITH THE ABS BRAKE MODULE. I DO NOT HAVE ABS HOOKED UP NOW AND I DO NOT FEEL VERY SAFE DRIVING AROUND WITHOUT IT BUT I DO NOT HAVE THE MONEY TO PUT IT IN THE SHOP AGAIN FOR THE SAME PROBLEM. I WOULD LIKE FOR FORD TO RECALL AND TAKE CARE OF THIS VERY FAULTY ABS BRAKE SYSTEM. *TR

THIS ALL STARTED ABOUT A YEAR AGO WITH A BRAKE FLUID LEAK AND AN INTERMITTENT AMBER AND RED ABS AND BRAKE WARNING INDICATORS ON THE DASHBOARD INDICATING A FAILURE OF THE ABS SYSTEM. IT IS NOW TO THE POINT THAT THE LIGHTS ARE ON ALL THE TIME. I HAD THE RECALL 09S09 WORK COMPLETED BY FORD AND THEY SAID THAT THE MODULE IS CAUSING THE PROBLEM BUT THEY WOULD NOT COVER IT UNDER THIS RECALL. FORD RECOMMENDED THAT IT BE FIXED BECAUSE IT IS A SAFETY HAZARD AND WILL CAUSE INCREASED BREAKING DISTANCES. BASED ON THIS FEEDBACK FROM MY LOCAL FORD DEALER I AM SUBMITTING THIS COMPLAINT. *TR
2002 WINDSTAR - BRAKE AND ABS INDICATOR LIGHTS ON DASHBOARD INTERMITTENTLY ACTIVATED. LIGHTS WILL COME ON AT RANDOM, SOMETIMES AT ENGINE START, OTHER TIMES WHILE DRIVING. BOTH LIGHTS WILL ILLUMINATE AT THE SAME TIME. TURNING THE ENGINE OFF AND ON WILL CAUSE THEM TO GO OUT. *TR

THE FIRE DEPARTMENT ARRIVED AND DISCONNECTED THE BATTERY. THEY STATED THAT AN ELECTRICAL FIRE HAD OCCURRED. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED BY AN INSURANCE ADJUSTER, WHO DETERMINED THAT THE REAR WINDOW WIPER MOTOR FAILED AND CAUSED THE FIRE. THE VEHICLE WAS LABELED AS DESTROYED DUE TO THE COST TO CLEAN THE CHEMICALS OUT OF THE VEHICLE, WHICH WAS MORE THAN THE VEHICLE'S WORTH. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL REPAIR SHOP. THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE WINDOW WIPER MOTOR CAUSED THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER AND HER VIN WAS REQUESTED. SHE WAS LATER INFORMED THAT SHE NEEDED TO CALL HER INSURANCE COMPANY FOR FURTHER ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 82,241.
THE BRAKE LIGHT AND EMERGENCY BRAKE LIGHT CAME ON ALL OF A SUDDEN AND THE BRAKING PERFORMANCE DEGRADED AND THE BRAKING DISTANCE REQUIREMENT IS LONG. THIS COULD BE A SAFETY ISSUE. AS I UNDERSTAND, THE ISSUE IS THE DEFECTIVE SENSOR WITH THE SOLDIER DISTANCE EXPANDED DUE TO THE HEAT. *TR
