BROUGHT MY 2003 FORD WINDSTAR IN TO MY LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP BECAUSE IT FAILED STATE SAFETY INSPECTION AS THE ABS LIGHT WAS ON. FORD TOOK THE VEHICLE AND INSPECTED IT BASED UPON A RECALL ON THE REAR AXLE AND SAID THAT IT FAILED. THEY PROVIDED ME WITH A RENTAL. THE NEXT DAY, I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP AND ASKED THEM TO CHECK THE ABS RIGHT AWAY ANYWAY AS IF THEY WERE ABLE TO REPAIR THE AXLE ISSUE SOON, I WOULD STILL NOT BE ABLE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE OFF THEIR LOT AS IT WASN'T SAFE. AT THE TIME, THE SERVICE MANAGER AGREED. I WAITED FOR A CALL BACK AND RECEIVED NONE. A MONTH LATER, I PLACED ANOTHER CALL AND WAS TOLD THAT THERE WAS GOING TO BE ANOTHER RECALL FOR THE FRONT SUBFRAME AND THAT FORD WAS GOING TO BUYBACK VEHICLES THAT WERE ALREADY IN WITH BOTH ISSUES SO I SHOULD WAIT FOR THE RECALL TO BECOME OFFICIALLY IN PROGRESS. I WAITED ANOTHER COUPLE OF WEEKS AND WHEN I HEARD NOTHING, I CALLED BACK AND INQUIRED ABOUT THE STATUS. I WAS TOLD THAT VIRTUALLY NO CARS WERE FAILING THE INSPECTION FOR THE FRONT SUBFRAME, SO I WOULD HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL AN AXLE WAS AVAILABLE FOR ME TO GET MY VAN BACK. I HAVE STILL NOT HEARD THE COST TO REPAIR MY ABS ISSUE, SO MY QUESTION IS, AM I GOING TO HEAR ANYTHING ABOUT THIS BEFORE THEY REPAIR MY AXLE, AS I AM GOING TO BE PAST THE 60 DAYS THAT I AM ALLOWED TO REPAIR THE ABS ISSUE BEFORE MASSACHUSETTS HAS THE RIGHT TO REVOKE MY REGISTRATION FOR NOT RE-INSPECTING MY VEHICLE. I AM GOING TO CALL MY INSURANCE COMPANY TOMORROW TO FIND OUT WHAT I SHOULD BE DOING NEXT, BUT IN THE MEANTIME, I AM LEFT UNKNOWING WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN. AS IT STANDS, I WILL NOT HAVE A SAFE VEHICLE TO DRIVE ONCE THEY REPAIR THE AXLE AS THEY ARE UNWILLING TO DO ANY WORK ON THE VEHICLE UNTIL THEY REPAIR THE AXLE. *TR
ABS LIGHT CAME ON AND WON'T GO OFF. MECHANIC CAN'T FIGURE IT OUT. LAST MONTH THE BRAKE LIGHT CAME ON AND NOW IT WON'T GO OFF EITHER. I DID SOME RESEARCH AND DISCOVERED THIS IS A FAIRLY COMMON PROBLEM, LEADING TO A POTENTIAL FIRE. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 FORD WINDSTAR. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE ABS LIGHT REMAINED ILLUMINATED AND FAILED TO ENGAGE IN A TIMELY MANNER. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR A DIAGNOSTIC TEST AND THEY WERE UNABLE TO LOCATE A FAILURE CODE. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 FORD WINDSTAR. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 55 MPH, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY SWERVED TO THE LEFT AND RIGHT AND THE CONTACT WAS UNABLE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT CRASHED INTO DITCH. THE CONTACT WAS REPORTED INJURED. A POLICE REPORT WAS AVAILABLE (CARROLL TOWNSHIP POLICE DEPARTMENT 10-0910). THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED FROM THE DITCH AND THE TOW DRIVER ADVISED THAT THE STEERING BRACKET WAS FRACTURED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A TOW YARD WHERE THE CONTACT WAS AWAITING THE COMPLETION OF AN INVESTIGATION THROUGH HER INSURANCE COMPANY. THE FAILURE AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WERE 106,000.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR REPAIRS FOR RECALL (NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 10V385000 COMPONENT: SUSPENSION: REAR: AXLE: NON-POWERED AXLE ASSEMBLY) WHEN THE TECHNICIAN STATED THE FRONT SUBFRAME WAS SEVERELY CORRODED AND THERE WAS A HOLE IN FRONT OF THE BOLT THAT HELD UP THE SUBFRAME. THE CONTACT STATED THERE WAS AN OPEN INVESTIGATION ON THAT COMPONENT (NHTSA ACTION NUMBER: EA10007 COMPONENT(S): STRUCTURE: FRAME AND MEMBERS SUSPENSION). THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED FOR THE RECALL BUT WAS NOT REPAIRED FOR THE SUB FRAME. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 105,100. /UPDATED 3/7/11*CN UPDATED 12/7/11 *CN
I UNDERSTAND THERE IS A RECALL ON CERTAIN FORD WINDSTAR MODELS IN THE NORTHERN STATES DUE TO A DEFECTIVE REAR AXLE. I HAVE A 2003 FORD WINDSTAR VAN VIN: [XXX] WHICH WE PURCHASED USED IN JULY 2004. FROM WHAT WE WERE TOLD WHEN WE BOUGHT IT, THE VEHICLE CAME FROM OHIO. ON 12/28/10, I CALLED A LOCAL FORD DEALER WHO RAN MY VIN THROUGH THEIR DATABASE AND I WAS TOLD MY VEHICLE IS NOT PART OF THE RECALL. I WAS TOLD IT WOULD COST $95 FOR THEIR SERVICE DEPT. TO CHECK MY REAR AXLE FOR THE DEFECT SINCE IT ISN'T UNDER THE RECALL. I WANT TO MAKE SURE MY VEHICLE IS OR IS NOT PART OF THE RECALL. I SAW A ABC NEWS REPORT ON DEC. 20TH WHICH MAKES IT SOUND LIKE THE RECALL MAY BE EXTENDED TO CERTAIN VEHICLES. IF MY VEHICLE ORIGINATED IN OHIO, IT SHOULD BE PART OF THE RECALL. 2003 FORD WINDSTAR REAR AXLE COMPLAINT AND TRANSMISSION. FIRST OF ALL, I WAS LEFT STRANDED WHEN THE TRANSMISSION WENT OUT ON CHRISTMAS EVE. MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ME FROM FORD. FORD WANTS $3800 TO REPLACE IT. THE VAN IS ONLY WORTH THAT. THEN I FIND OUT THAT FORD HAS HAD MANY COMPLAINTS AND FAILURES WITH THE TRANSMISSION. WHY DO I HAVE TO PAY FOR THIS. I TAKE CARE OF AND MAINTAIN MY VEHICLES AND I GET THIS HANDED TO ME. THEN THE DEALER TELLS ME THAT THE AXLE NEEDS TO BE REPLACED AND IT MIGHT BE 6 WEEKS BEFORE THE PART EVEN COMES IN. THEY WILL NOT BUY THE VAN BACK BECAUSE IT IS A 2003. I THINK THEY SHOULD. THEY ARE THE ONES WHO SOLD ME THIS VEHICLE AND NOW I HAVE TO DEAL WITH IT. BUY THE TIME THEY PAY FOR MY RENTAL AND FIX THE AXLE, IT WOULD BE CHEAPER TO BUY ME OUT AND SAVE THERE CUSTOMER ALOT OF STRESS. *TR

THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS EXPERIENCING NUMEROUS FAILURES WITH THE ABS, BRAKE LIGHT ILLUMINATION, SLOW GEAR SHIFTING AND POWER WINDOWS AND DOOR LOCK FAILURES. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND ADVISED THAT THERE WERE NO RECALLS FOR THE VEHICLE. THE MANUFACTURER DENIED ANY ASSISTANCE WITH REPAIRS TO THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER TO BE DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 101,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 104,000.
ABS AND BRAKE LIGHT USUALLY STAY ON ALTHOUGH THERE IS NO PROBLEM WITH THE SYSTEM. BOUGHT USED AS FORD CERTIFIED PREOWNED AND CANNOT DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM. AT TIMES THE LIGHT WILL GO OUT FOR A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME BUT NO NOTICEABLE PATTERN HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED. THE LIGHT PROBLEM HAS BEEN ONGOING FOR AT LEAST 3 YEARS. *TR

NOTIFIED BY FORD MOTOR CO. ABOUT A VOLUNTEER RECALL FOR THE INSPECTION AND REPAIR OR REPLACEMENT OF THE REAR AXLE FOR MY 2003 FORD WINDSTAR. DEALER FOUND NO CRACKS AND APPLIED ANTICORROSIVE MATERIAL AND REINFORCMENT BRACKETS. I BELIEVE THAT IT'S POOR DESIGN IS THE SOLE REASON FOR IT'S FAILURE AND THIS "TEMP" FIX IS ONLY PUTTING OF THE INEVITABLE. FORD SHOULD BE MANDATING THAT ALL WINDSTAR'S AFFECTED ON THE ROAD SHOULD HAVE AN AXLE REPLACEMENT FREE OF CHARGE. *LN

THE CONTACT NOTIFIED FOUR DIFFERENT DEALERS REGARDING THE RECALL AND THEY WERE UNABLE TO INSPECT OR REPAIR THE VEHICLE UNDER THE RECALL FOR A PERIOD OF THREE MONTHS DUE TO THE PART UNAVAILABILITY. TRANSMISSION REVERSE FAILURE. I NOW HAVE NO REVERSE. COST TO REBUILD IS $2,200.00 FROM DURABILD TRANSMISSION. I HAVE NOT REPAIRED THE TRANSMISSION FOR I DO NOT HAVE THE CASH TO REPAIR IT AND HOPING THERE WAS A RECALL ON THIS PART ALSO, SINCE THERE IS 5 OTHER RECALLS ON THE 2003 FORD WINDSTAR MINI-VAN. SINCE THIS IS MY ONLY VEHICLE, I'M USING IT CURRENTLY WITH NO REVERSE. I HAVE FOUND OVER 100 OTHER TRANSMISSION COMPLAINTS FOR THIS MODEL AND YEAR LOCATED AT THIS LINK... STOPPED AT TRAFFIC LIGHT. WHEN LIGHT TURNED GREEN VAN WOULD NOT MOVE. THERE WERE NOT ANY NOISES, WARNING LIGHTS OR ISSUES TO INDICATE A PROBLEM. VAN REQUIRED A TOW TRUCK. MECHANIC DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS FAILURE OF TORQUE CONVERTER. *TR

THE CONTACT CALLED THE DEALER WHO STATED THAT THEY WOULD CONTACT THE MANUFACTURER. THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER WHO STATED THAT THE PROBLEM HAD TO BE LEGALLY HANDLED. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 107,000.
MY ABS LIGHTS AND TRACTION CONTROL WARNING LIGHTS COME ON AND ABS SYSTEM SEEMS TO BE ENGAGED WHEN NO BRAKING IS HAPPENING. WHEN BRAKES ARE ENGAGED THE BRAKING SEEMS TO TAKE A LOT LONGER. ABS MODULE HAS DEFECTIVE SOLDER JOINTS CAUSING MANY SYSTEM FAILURES. FAILURE HAPPENS WHEN STATIONARY.
2003 FORD WINDSTAR 3.8L THAT HAS AN ABS/BRAKE LIGHT ISSUE. THE LIGHTS COME ON AT WHAT APPEARS TO BE RANDOM AND STAY ON UNTIL YOU TURN OFF THE ENGINE AND RESTART. MAY GO DAYS OR A FEW WEEKS WITHOUT THIS ISSUE, THEN IT MIGHT POP UP 2-3 TIMES IN ONE DAY. WAS TOLD NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT. *TR

WHILE ACCELERATING FROM A STOP LIGHT, STEERING CONTROL WAS COMPLETELY LOST AT APPROXIMATELY 35MPH. THE VEHICLE TURNED TO THE LEFT, THEN RIGHT, AND RAN OFF THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE ROAD. IT WOULD NOT MOVE IN EITHER FORWARD OR REVERSE. FRONT WHEELS WERE POINTED IN DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS. THE RIGHT FRONT LOWER CONTROL ARM HAD BROKEN AWAY FROM THE FRAME, AND THE RIGHT FRONT HALF-SHAFT HAD PULLED OUT OF THE TRANSAXLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A NEARBY FORD DEALER. AS OF DECEMBER 6, THE DEALER HAS NOT YET INVESTIGATED THE VEHICLE. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 FORD WINDSTAR. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO DECELERATE AND WOULD NOT ACCELERATE WHEN THE PEDAL WAS ENGAGED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING WHERE THE TECHNICIAN STATED THE TORQUE CONVERTER HAD TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE THE SPLINES WERE WORN. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. APPROXIMATELY TWO YEARS AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED FOR THE RECENT FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 100,000. ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON EVERY FEW WEEKS AFTER BEING RESET. CODES ARE FOR LEAN BANK 1, 2. VEHICLE WAS DIAGNOSED WITH AN INTAKE LEAK. MECHANICS HAVE SAID THAT THIS IS A LONG STANDING ISSUE WITH THE 3.8L ENGINE IN THE WINDSTAR. COST OF REPAIR IS $600+. VEHICLE WILL NOT PASS EMISSIONS WITHOUT BEING REPAIRED. *TR
I OWN A 2003 FORD WINDSTAR SE THAT HAS SERIOUS CORROSION WHERE THE PASSENGER SIDE FRONT CONTROL ARM BOLTS INTO THE FRAME. IT HAS NOT FAILED COMPLETELY, BUT I FEEL I SHOULD NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE COST OF THIS REPAIR. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE SUBFRAME CORROSION WAS THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE AND COULD BE REPLACED. THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER WHO OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE APPROXIMATELY 55,000.
INTERIOR LIGHTS COME ON RANDOMLY AND BLINK WHILE DRIVING. SOMETIMES THEY STAY ON AFTER TURNING OFF THE VEHICLE DRAINING THE BATTERY. THE DOOR AJAR STAYS ON WHEN THE DOOR IS CLOSED. ALL CONTACTS CLEANED AND IT STILL DOES THIS. DRIVING WITH A FLASHING LIGHT IN THE VEHICLE IS DISTRACTING AND COULD CAUSE AN ACCIDENT, THIS SEEMS TO BE A PROBLEM IN ALL FORD WINDSTARS AND SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED. *TR
WHILE I WAS DRIVING I HEARD A WEIRD SOUND AND AFTER I CROSSED TRAIN RAILS THE REAR AXEL GOT FRACTURE. *TR

THE CONTACT STATED THAT AFTER RECEIVING A RECALL NOTICE IN REGARDS TO NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 11V030000(STRUCTURE: FRAME AND MEMBERS:UNDERBODY SHIELDS) AND 10V385000(SUSPENSION:REAR:AXLE:NON-POWERED AXLE ASSEMBLY). SHE TOOK HER VEHICLE INTO THE DEALER NOVEMBER OF 2010 FOR BOTH RECALLS AND THE PARTS WERE NOT AVAILABLE TO PERFORM THE RECALL REPAIRS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THERE ARE NO FAILURES AT THIS TIME.
JUST ANOTHER DAY OF DRIVING DOWN THE STREET ON THE BUMPY ROAD. WHEN I FINALLY PASS THE CONSTRUCTION AREA TO THE NEWLY PAVED ROAD TO COME TO A STOP AT THE LIGHT, CAR STARTED TO SKID LOCKED UP THE FRONT WHEEL. WHOLE VAN SHACK. THEN THE ABS AND BRAKE LIGHT CAME ON. IT WAS A LIFE OR DEATH EXPERIENCE FOR ME! NOW THE ABS AND BRAKE LIGHT LID UP ON THE REGULAR BASES. HELP!! *TR
DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AND ALL OF SUDDEN DOME LIGHTS START FLASHING ON AND OFF. TRY TO TURN THEM OFF WITH THE SWITCH AND THEY STILL KEEP COMING ON. SOMETIMES MY AUTOMATIC WINDOWS WON'T WORK. FIRST IT'S ONE SIDE AND THE NEXT TIME IT COULD BE THE OTHER SIDE. *TR

MOUNTING BRACKET FOR THE LOWER CONTROL ARM ON THE SUBFRAME RUSTED AND BROKE, MAKING TIRE CHANGE DIRECTION WHILE MY WIFE WAS PULLING INTO THE DRIVEWAY. THE AXLE SLID OUT. SUBFRAME HAS TO BE REPLACED. DEALERSHIP QUOTED ABOUT $1500 TO REPAIR. REAR AXLE IS INVOLVE IN RECALL. I BELIEVE THIS SHOULD ALSO BE RECALLED AT IS A SAFETY CONCERN THAT SHOULD NOT HAPPEN TO A VEHICLE ONLY 8 YEARS OLD. *TR

MY 2003 FORD WINDSTAR WAS RECALLED FOR REAR AXLE THE DEALER KEPT THE VEHICLE BECAUSE CRACK WAS FOUND, I SPOKE TO THIRD PARTY MECHANIC WHO SPOKE ABOUT FRONT SUB FRAME AS WELL THE THIRD PARTY MECHANIC THEN SHOWED ME THE CRACK IN MY WINDSTAR FRONT SUB FRAME AND INFORMED ME THAT IT COULD BREAK OFF AT ANY TIME . I THEN BROUGHT THIS TO THE ATTENTION OF THE FORD DEALER WHO THEN RESPONDED SAYING ITS NOT PART OF THE RECALL AND REFEREED ME TO FORD CANADA PUBLIC RELATIONS WHO ALSO SAID ITS NOT PART OF THE RECALL AND THAT I SHOULD HAVE IT FIXED AT MY EXPENSE. *TR
THE ABS AND BRAKE LIGHTS ON THE DASHBOARD OF MY 2003 FORD WINDSTAR HAVE BEEN ILLUMINATING INTERMITTENTLY (ALWAYS TOGETHER) FOR THE LAST WEEK. THE LATEST EVENT OCCURRED AFTER TURNING THE VAN OFF FOR A MINUTE OR SO AND RESTARTING. THE LIGHTS WERE OFF (NORMAL) PRIOR TO THE RESTART FOR THE DURATION OF MY FIRST TRIP (ABOUT 15 MINUTES) AND THEN TURNED ON FOR THE DURATION OF MY SECOND TRIP (ABOUT 5 MINUTES). WE HAVE RECENTLY HAD COOLER WEATHER IN THE OVERNIGHTS WITH LOWS IN THE 50S AFTER A LONG HOT SUMMER WITH DAYTIME TEMPERATURES ABOVE 100 F, CONSISTENTLY ABOVE 80 F. NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE TO ATTEMPT REPAIRS AT THIS POINT. *TR

SYSTEM FAILURE, SPEED CONTROL, SPEEDOMETER, ODOMETER, HEATER/AIRCONDITIONER AFTER LOOKING UP ONLINE WHAT CAUSED MY SYSTEMS TO FAIL, I WENT TO SINCLAIR TO PURCHASE THE PART. I WAS TOLD BY PARTS MNGR THAT IT WAS ON RE-CALL FOR THAT AND I WOULD HAVE TO HAVE IT FIXED BY THEIR SERVICE DEPT. THEY CONFIRMED THIS WAS ON RE-CALL AND HAD ME RETURN LATER THAT AFTERNOON. AFTER FOUR AND A HALF HOURS I WAS ASKED TO COME BACK THAT THEY WERE HAVING DIFFICULTY FIXING THE PROBLEM. I ATTEMPTED TO MAKE AN APPT LATER THE NEXT DAY AND WAS TOLD IT WAS TOO LATE THAT I DID NOT BRING MY VEHICLE IN IN A TIMELY MANNER AND THEY WILL NO LONGER FIX MY VEHICLE. THEIR ARE NO EXPIRATION DATES ON THIS RE-CALL. I HAVE RECEIVED A CUSTOMER SERVICE RECEIPT EXPLAINING WHAT THEY DID AND STATING THAT THEY STRIVE TO GIVE THE BEST CUSTOMER SERVICE. WHAT A JOKE, THEY LEFT ME WITH A VEHICLE THAT IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE IN THIS CONDITION, AFTER TAKING UP MY WHOLE AFTERNOON. I RESPONDED WITH A VERY DISHEARTENED LACK OF SATISFACTION AND WAS REFERRED TO FORD HEADQUARTER. I WAS TOLD THAT THIS WAS NEVER A RE-CALL ITEM BY FORD. IF THIS WAS HANDLED ACURATELY THE FIRST TIME, MY CAR WOULD ALREADY BE FIXED. DAVE WOULD NEVER HAVE LET THIS HAPPEN, HE BUILT THIS DEALERSHIP ON THE CONCEPT OF GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE. IF HIS TEAM MADE AN ERROR, HE WOULD FIX IT ON PRINCIPAL EVEN IF IT MEANT HE ATE THE COST. I GUESS HIS REPUTATION WAS BURIED WITH HIM. IN 12/2008 WITH 87,205 MILES THE TRANSMISSION WENT,THAT WAS 2013.00 , THEN IN 3-2009 CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, HAD TO REPLACE GASKETS, THAT COST 500.00,. THEN IN 10/15/2010 I HAD TO BRING VAN IN FOR DIFFERENT SENSORS, AND ABS LIGHT, AND EMERGENCY BRAKE LIGHT KEPT COMING ON. THAT WAS . THAT WAS 232.00. THEN ON 10/19/2010 BROUGHT VAN IN TO THE FORD DEALER, BECAUSE NONE OF MY GAUGES WORK, LETTING ME KNOW HOW FAST I'M GOING, OR HOW MUCH GAS I HAVE. THEY SAY IT IS THE GAUGE CLUSTER, THAT'S 500.00 ALONE NOT INCLUDING LABOR, THEY INFORM ME I HAVE A HOLE IN THE LEFT REAR AXLE, AND I HAVE TO LEAVE THE VAN THERE, AND I MAY ALSO NEED A NEW ALTERNATOR, AND IT MAY TAKES WEEKS FOR THE PART TO COME IN.
