OUR FORD WINDSTAR VAN THAT WAS MANUFACTURED IN MAY 2003 WAS MAKING A LOUD NOISE FROM THE REAR. WHEN WE TOOK IT TO THE DEALER THEY SAID THE REAR AXLE WAS CRACKED IN TWO PLACES AND HAD RUST/CORROSION HOLES IN IT. THEY SAID WE COULD NOT DRIVE IT BECAUSE IT WAS UNSAFE AND THEY COULD NOT GET A REPLACEMENT PART UNTIL APRIL 2011. WE LATER FIND OUT THAT FORD WINDSTAR VANS FROM 1999 THRU FEBRUARY 2003 HAVE BEEN RECALLED FOR THIS EXACT PROBLEM. BECAUSE OUR VAN WAS MANUFACTURED MAY 2003 (TWO MONTHS OUTSIDE THE RECALL TIME) THEY WILL NOT COVER IT. WE NOW HAVE A CAR WE CAN'T DRIVE BECAUSE OF SAFETY HAZARD AND EVEN IF WE WANTED TO PAY TO FIX IT, WHICH WE SHOULD NOT HAVE TO, THE PART IS NOT AVAILABLE FOR SEVEN MORE MONTHS LEAVING US WITHOUT A VEHICLE. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 FORD WINDSTAR. WHILE TRAVELING AT ANY SPEED THE CONTACT HEARD A SQUEAKING SOUND COMING FROM THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL MECHANIC WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE REAR AXLE WAS CRACKED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 84000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 FORD WINDSTAR. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH AND THE TRANSMISSION WOULD NOT RESPOND WHEN THE ACCELERATE PEDAL WAS ENGAGED UNTIL AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS. THE ENGINE EXHIBITED AN UNUSUAL INCREASE IN RPMS. THE VEHICLE CONTINUED IN OPERATION WITH THE REPEATED FAILURE AND WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT TRANSMISSION SPECIALIST WHERE THEY INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE CLUTCH AND TORQUE CONVERTER WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED FOR THE MALFUNCTION. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 102,000. UPDATED 5/2/11 *CN UPDATED 05/23/11
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 FORD WINDSTAR. THE CONTACT RECEIVED A RECALL NOTIFICATION ASSOCIATED WITH THE REAR AXLE UNDER THE MANUFACTURER VOLUNTARY RECALL NUMBER 10S13. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER AND THEY INFORMED THAT THE PART WOULD NOT BE AVAILABLE UNTIL 2011. THE CONTACT WAS DISPLEASED TO KNOW THE MANUFACTURER WOULD NOT PROVIDE A REPLACEMENT LOANER VEHICLE EQUAL TO THE OWNER'S VEHICLE DURING THE RECALL REMEDY REPAIR. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE. THERE WAS NO FAILURE MILEAGE.
ABS AND BRAKE LIGHT ON. *TR
2003 WINDSTAR ABS MODULE HAS FAILED, CAUSING BOTH ABS AND BRAKE LIGHTS TO STAY ON AFTER DRIVING ABOUT FIVE MINUTES ONCE MODULE WARMS UP. WHEN SYSTEM FAILS, THE ABS SYSTEM IS DISABLED. TURNING OFF THE ENGINE AND RE-STARTING WILL SOMETIMES CLEAR THE PROBLEM, BUT THEN IT WILL REAPPEAR IN A FEW MINUTES, ESPECIALLY IN WARM WEATHER. THE PROBLEM IS LESS FREQUENT IN COLD WEATHER (TAKES LONGER TO COME ON) BUT STILL OCCURS. REPLACED SENSORS IN PREVIOUS REPAIRS. REVIEWED SYMPTOM ON LINE AND FOUND THEY ARE CONSISTENT WITH DEFECTIVE ABS CONTROLLER PROBLEM CAUSED BY EXPANSION OF THE CONTROLLER HEAT SINK AFTER A FEW MINUTES OF DRIVING, CAUSING A BREAK IN THE ATTACHED CIRCUIT BOARD. MUST REPLACE ABS CONTROLLER TO FIX PROBLEM WITH THIS KNOWN DEFECT. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 FORD WINDSTAR. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE PARKED THE TRACTION CONTROL, ABS, AND EMERGENCY BRAKE WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO TWO DIFFERENT INDEPENDENT MECHANICS FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING WHO WERE UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 98,000.
PARKING BRAKE LIGHT AND ABS LIGHT REMAIN ON WHILE OPERATING--SOFT BRAKES--UNRELIABLE ABS TOOK IN TO DEALERSHIP AND THEY DIAGNOSED CONCERN AS "FOUND ABS ECU CAUSING LIGHT TO COME ON". *TR
FIRST OF ALL THERE IS A SHORT LOCATED BY THE STEERING WHEEL AROUND THE AIR BAG. I THOUGHT IT WAS THE BATTERY SO I CHANGED IT AND A COUPLE OF DAYS LATER MY VAN WOULD NOT START. I TOOK IT TO THE FORD DEALER AND THEY COULDN'T FIND THE PROBLEM, SO I TOOK IT TO AN OLD MAN THAT JUST DID ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS ON AUTOMOBILES. HE SAID IT WAS A BAD WIRE IN THE STEERING COLUMN AND HE SAID TO REPAIR IT WOULD COST A LOT OF MONEY, SO HE BYPASSED SOME WIRES AND I HAVE NOT HAD ANY PROBLEMS SINCE, BUT WHEN YOU OPEN THE DRIVER SIDE DOOR, THE DOOR CHIMES, LIKE WHEN YOU LEAVE THE KEYS IN THE IGNITION. HE ONLY CHARGED ME $75. ALSO I WOULD BE DRIVING AND THE INTERIOR LIGHTS WOULD TURN ON AND OFF BY THEMSELVES. THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING FOR A LONG TIME. ALSO THE ABS WARNING LIGHTS HAVE BEEN ON FOR A WHILE AND MY MECHANIC SAID IT IS A BAD ABS STEERING BOX. TO REPLACE IT WOULD COST AROUND $1000. I HAVE HAD ALSO THE HEAD GASKET REPLACED BECAUSE THE FORD DEALER COULD NOT FIND WHAT WAS WRONG WITH IT WHILE IT WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY. IT WAS IDLING VERY ROUGH WHILE STOPPED AT A LIGHT, ALSO WHEN IN PARKED. IT COST ME ABOUT $600 TO REPLACE IT. I TOOK IT TO PEP BOYS AND THEY FOUND OUT WHAT WAS WRONG WITH IT. I ALSO HAD THE FUEL PUMP REPLACED, BECAUSE IT KEPT SHUTTING OFF WHILE AT THE GROCERY STORES AND HAD IT TOWED BY AAA 3 TIMES IN ABOUT A YEAR. BOTTOM LINE, I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER FORD VEHICLE WHILE I AM ALIVE. THEY ARE GOOD FOR THE FIRST COUPLE OF YEARS, THEN THEY START FAILING. SO SAD, BECAUSE I HAVE BEEN A FORD GUY FOR OVER 35 YEARS. *TR
SPOUSE WAS DRIVING HER 2003, FORD WINDSTAR SE, GOING UP AN ON-RAMP TO A MAJOR HIGH WAY, WHEN THE VEHICLE'S ENGINE REVERED HIGH, SLIPPING OUT OF DRIVE AND THE VEHICLE CAME TO A STOP AFTERWARDS. DRIVE AND OR REVERSE DOESN'T WORK ON THE VAN. VEHICLE HAS ALL THE POWER, BUT ONCE PUT IN DRIVE / REVERSE HITTING THE GAS, YOU GO KNOW WHERE.. *TR
OUR 2003 FORD WINDSTAR HAS BEEN HAVING MECHANICAL FAILURES FOR ABOUT 3 YEARS. WE HAVE HEARD A LOUD GRINDING NOISE FROM THE REAR PASSENERS SIDE OF THE CAR THAT NEITHER OUR LOCAL MECHANIC NOR FORD COULD FIX. WE REPLACED SHOCKS AND MOST RECENTLY THE TIRE RODS ON 9/24/10. WE HAVE HAD NUMEROUS ELECTRONICAL "BUGS" INCLLUDING ABS LIGHTS FLASHING ON AND OFF FOR 2 YEARS REQUIRING MULTIPLE FUSE CHANGES AND ELECTRICAL TESTING. OUR TRANSMISSION WAS REPLACED IN 2009 AT 59,000 MILES. THE POWER LOCKS ON THE PASSENGER SIDE DOOR AND REAR PASSENGER DOORS DO NOT OPEN REMOTELY OR WITH POWER LOCKS, ONLY KEY OR MANUAL LIFTING. NEEDLESS TO SAY, ALTHOUGH WE HAVE NOT HAD ANY PERSON INJURIES, WE HAVE SPENT A FORTUNE TO KEEP THIS CAR RUNNING IN WHAT WE THOUGHT WAS SAFE MANNER. *TR
THE 2003 FORD WINDSTAR, WAS HIT ON BOTH SIDES AND THE FRONT END WAS DAMAGED, THERE IS NO BUMPER, 90% OF THE FRONT END IS GONE. THE AIRBAG DID NOT DEPLOY. *TR
THE ABS AND BRAKE LIGHTS COMES ON INTERMITTENTLY. I BROUGHT IT IN FOR REPAIR AND THEY REPLACED BOTH FRONT WHEEL SPEED SENSORS. THE WARNING LIGHTS STILL COME ON INTERMITTENTLY. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 FORD WINDSTAR. WHILE DRIVING 5 MPH, THE CONTACT HEARD A NOISE FROM THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THERE WAS A RACK IN THE RIGHT AND LEFT SIDE OF THE REAR AXLE. THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER WHO STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN RECALL 10V385000 (SUSPENSION: REAR: AXLE: NON-POWERED AXLE ASSEMBLY) AND OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 75,537.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 FORD WINDSTAR. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING 2 MPH AND ATTEMPTING A TURN WHEN SHE HEARD A LOUD, UNUSUAL POP. THE VEHICLE THEN CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP WITHOUT STALLING. THE CONTACT HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE THE VEHICLE WAS DIAGNOSED. THE CONTACT WAS ADVISED THAT THE FRONT AXLE WAS CORRODED AND HAD FRACTURED IN TWO. IN ADDITION, THE REAR AXLE WAS ALSO FRACTURED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CONTACT WAS AWAITING A RESPONSE FROM THE MANUFACTURER TO DETERMINE IF REPAIRS WOULD BE MADE TO THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 78,714.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 FORD WINDSTAR. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE REAR AXLE WAS FRACTURED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER AND THE DEALER ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THE FAILURE UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 10V385000 (POWER TRAIN: AXLE ASSEMBLY). THE DEALER LATER ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT HER VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL BECAUSE OF THE MANUFACTURERS DATE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN AND THE APPROXIMATE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 115,000.
RANDOMLY, BUT WITH INCREASING REGULARITY, THE ABS AND BRAKE LIGHTS COME ON SIMULTANEOUSLY AND STAY LIT. ONLY WAY TO "CORRECT" ISSUE IS TO TURN OFF VEHICLE FOR A PERIOD OF TIME(MORE THAN 10 MINUTES) AND THEN START UP AGAIN. NO "NOTICEABLE" EFFECTS OCCUR WHEN LIGHTS COME ON, BUT I HAVEN'T HAD TO "USE" THE ABS SYSTEM AS IT IS SUMMERTIME AND ROAD CONDITIONS ARE OPTIMAL FOR BRAKING. ALSO, NOT SURE IF IT'S RELATED BUT, RECENTLY USED THE PARKING BRAKE AND EVEN THOUGH IT IS "FULLY RELEASED" INSIDE THE VEHICLE.....THE REAR BRAKES APPEAR TO STILL BE LOCKED DUE TO THE FACT OF VISUAL EVIDENCE OF SMOKE AND ACCOMPANYING BURNING SMELL AFTER DRIVING FOR ANY DISTANCE. *TR

MY 2003 WINDSTAR'S ABS & BRAKE INDICATOR LIGHTS COME ON INTERMITTENTLY. A LOCAL FORD DEALER SCANNED ABS SYSTEM, FOUND (1)CODE C1185 RELAY IN ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE FAILED, AND ASKED $1220 TO FIX IT. *TR

MY DAUGHTER OWNS A 2003 FORD WINDSTAR MINIVAN. AFTER HEARING ABOUT THE RECALL OF THESE VEHICLE, WE LOOKED AT HER REAR AXLE AND NOTICED A LARGE CRACK. WHEN WE BROUGHT IT TO A LOCAL FORD DEALER IN HANOVER MASSACHUSETTS WE WERE TOLD THE VIN # FOR HER VAN WAS NOT ON THE RECALL LIST. WHEN WE TOLD THEM THERE WAS INDEED A CRACK IN THE AXLE THEY SAID WE WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR IT TO BE REPAIRED. WE CONTACTED FORD MOTOR COMPANY WHO SAID MY DAUGHTER'S VEHICLE WAS MANUFACTURED IN MAY 2003 AND THE RECALL ONLY COVERED MINIVANS MADE UP THROUGH FEBRUARY OF 2003. WE ARE NOT CONVINCED THAT THE AXLE IN HER VAN IS NOT THE SAME ONES USED IN THE CARS MADE UP THROUGH FEBRUARY. FORD SAID THEY WILL NOT FIX IT. MY DAUGHTER HAS A 2YEAR OLD AND A 4 YEAR OLD AND WE LENT HER ONE OF OUR CARS TO USE BECAUSE WE ARE SO WORRIED ABOUT THE SAFETY OF OUR GRANDCHILDREN. I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT FORD WILL NOT OWN UP TO THIS FAULTY AXLE AND REPAIR IT. PLEASE HELP IF YOU CAN AND LET ME KNOW IF YOU AGREE WITH US THAT FORD SHOULD BE HELD RESPONSIBLE. MY DAUGHTER WORKS SO HARD AND DOES NOT HAVE THE MEANS FOR AN EXPENSIVE REPAIR. SHE HAD TO FIX THE TRANSMISSION NOT LONG AGO TO THE TUNE OF $2000.00. INTERMITTENT ABS & BRAKE LIGHTS ON DASH COMING ON. WHILE THESE LIGHTS ARE ON THE BRAKING IS HARDER THAN NORMAL AND THERE IS NO ABS. THIS HAS BEEN ON & OFF FOR ABOUT 100,000 MILES OR SO. DURING THE WARM WEATHER/SUMMER MONTHS, IT APPEARS TO BE ON MOST OF THE TIME. *TR
BRAKING DISTANCE SUDDENLY INCREASED. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 FORD WINDSTAR. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKE MODULE BURNED OUT ON THE VEHICLE AND CAUSED THE FUSE TO BURN OUT AS WELL. THE WIRING HARNESS BURNED AND NOW THE AIR CONDITIONER AND SPEEDOMETER HAVE FAILED. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN INSPECTED AT THE TIME OF THE COMPLAINT. THE FAILURE MILEAGE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 123000.
MY 2003 FORD WINDSTAR CUTS OFF GOING DOWN THE ROAD , 30MPH TO WHAT EVER YOU ARE RUNNING DON;T CARE. YOU HAVE TO STOP AND COAST OFF THE ROAD BEST YOU CAN PUT IT IN PARK START IT UP AGAIN AND THEN GO ON, MAY DO IT AGAIN OR AGAIN IN A DAY OR SO THIS NEEDS TO BE PLACED ON A RECALL, EVERYONE I TALK TO 6 OUT OF 10 PEOPLE WITH THESE VANS HAVE THE SAME THING AND NO ONE KNOWS WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT, PLEASE HELP BEFORE SOME ONE GETS HURT OR KILLED FOR THIS CRAZY MESS!!!! TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 FORD WINDSTAR. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE STRUTS ON THE FRONT RIGHT END OF THE VEHICLE WERE COVERED WITH RUST AND CAUSED THE RIGHT FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE TO COLLAPSE. THE CONTACT LOST CONTROL OF THE STEERING WHEEL WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY; THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE TIRE TURNED TO THE RIGHT WHEN THE CONTACT MADE A LEFT TURN. THE CV JOINT AND STRUT WERE DAMAGED BY RUST, THEY FELL OFF OF THE FRAME AND DETACHED FROM THE AXLE. THE CONTACT IS A SERVICE MECHANIC AND OBSERVED LAYERS OF RUST UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 156000.

ABS AND BRAKE LIGHT CAME ON. BROUGHT 2003 FORD WINDSTAR LX TO FORD REPAIR SHOP. 1,825 LATER, IM READING THESE COMPLAINTS. VERY EXPENSIVE CONSIDERING I ONLY HAVE 45,000 MILES ON THE VAN. IM VERY DISAPPOINTED IN THE FORD COMPANY FOR NOT ADDRESSING THESE ISSUES. *TR

AFTER TAKING THE VEHICLE TO THE FORD DEALER, WE WERE ADVISED THAT THE ABS WAS NOT WORKING AND IN THE EVENT OF A QUICK STOP BEING NECESSARY, WE SHOULD PUMP THE BRAKES TO PREVENT THE TIRES FROM SKIDDING. REPAIR OF THE VEHICLE WAS GOING TO EXCEED $1200.00. *TR
I BROUGHT MY CAR TO THE FORD DEALER FOR ROUTINE OIL AND FILTER MAINTENANCE AND WHILE ON THE LIFT IT WAS BROUGHT TO MY ATTENTION THAT THE REAR AXLE IS CRACKED AND BARELY INTACT. THIS CAR WAS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE. I HAD IT REPLACED AND $1,300 DOLLARS LATER. THE REPRESENTATIVE STATES THAT MY CAR IS ABOUT THE 4TH IN THEIR DEALERSHIP WITHIN THE MONTH WITH REAR AXLE CRACKED. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL MECHANIC WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED AND THERE WERE NO PRIOR WARNINGS. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 130000.

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 FORD WINDSTAR. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 55 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HE COASTED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. WHEN HE WAITED A FEW MINUTES AFTER THE VEHICLE STALLED AND TURNED IT BACK ON, IT WOULD PERFORM CORRECTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A LOCAL REPAIR SHOP. THE LOCAL MECHANIC ADVISED HIM TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER. THE VEHICLE WAS EVENTUALLY TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE INTAKE MANIFOLD CASKET NEEDED REPLACED. THE DEALER REPLACED THE INTAKE MANIFOLD CASKET, INSTALLED A THROTTLE BODY SPACER AND THROTTLE AIR VALVE ASSEMBLY AND RE-FLASHED THE PCM TO THE COMPUTER AND THE IAC VALVE. THE CONTACT STATED THE FAILURE OCCURRED AGAIN WHILE DRIVING FROM THE DEALERSHIP. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER WHERE THE VEHICLE STAYED FOR TWO WEEKS. THE DEALER THEN INSTALLED A CRANK SHAFT SENSOR AND A WIRE ASSEMBLY. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED FULLY AS THE CONTACT PICKED THE VEHICLE UP BEFORE FINAL REPAIRS WERE PERFORMED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A MECHANIC SHOP WHO RAN A DIAGNOSTIC TEST AND INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT TWO OUT OF THE FOUR ABS SENSORS FAILED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND SHE WAS ADVISED THAT THERE WERE NO RECALLS FOR THE VEHICLE AND OFFERED NO FURTHER ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 86,000.

THE VAN IS GARAGED KEPT . THE VAN WAS BOUGHT FOR MY HUSBAND TO GET AROUND AS HE WAS IN WHEELCHAIR. NOW DECEASED 5 YEARS. *TR
DEFECT IDENTIFIED BEFORE AN INCIDENT OCCURRED. THE DESIGN/MANUFACTURING DEFECT IS AS FOLLOWS: 2003 FORD WINDSTAR FRAME/ENGINE CRADLE RUSTED THROUGH WHERE THE FRONT SWAY BAR ATTACHES TO THE FRAME ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. INITIALLY IDENTIFIED BY OWNER BECAUSE OF A DISTURBING BANGING SOUND OF THE SWAY BAR WHEN DRIVING; AND CONFIRMED BY VISUAL INSPECTION BY OWNER AND A SERVICE MECHANIC. THE FRAME/ENGINE CRADLE CARRIES ALL OF THE LOWER SUSPENSION AND DRIVE TRAIN COMPONENTS/LOADS. IF THIS WERE NOT REPAIRED WHEN IT WAS, A CATASTROPHIC FRONT END FAILURE WOULD HAVE OCCURRED. IF FAILURE OCCURRED AT HIGH SPEEDS OR IN A TURN A TERRIBLE ACCIDENT (& DEATHS) COULD HAVE OCCURRED. I WOULD CONSIDER THIS DEFECT A HUGE SAFETY CONCERN. *TR
