LOUD GRINDING NOISE FROM REAR UPON STOPPING AND GOING, AND BRAKES STICKING. THIS IS THE THIRD TIME FIXING AND CHANGING THE PADS AND ROTORS. VERY LOW USE OF VEHICLE AND SHORT TIME BETWEEN HAVING BRAKES DONE AGAIN.
I STARTED TO NOTICE THIS ISSUE MONTHS AFTER PURCHASING IT USED FROM A PRIVATE PARTY. DURING THE WINTER TIME WHEN IT WAS PARTICULARLY COLD OUTSIDE, I NOTICED THAT MY POWER BRAKES WOULD START WORKING WHEN I FIRST START UP THE CAR. EVENTUALLY, I WOULD DISCOVER THAT THE BRAKE BOOSTER CHECK VALVE WAS STICKING AND PREVENTING THE POWER BRAKES FROM BEING ACTIVE WHEN STARTING A VEHICLE IN THE COLD WEATHER. IT WAS VERY CONFUSING AT FIRST BECAUSE THERE WOULD BE STORED POWER BRAKES IN THE VACUUM BOOSTER FROM THE DAY BEFORE THAT WOULD BE USED UP WHEN BACKING OUT OF MY PARKING SPOT. HOWEVER, AS I WAS MOVING FORWARD AND SUBSEQUENTLY WANTING TO APPLY THE BRAKES, I FOUND THAT THE POWER BRAKES WERE NOT WORKING. THE BRAKE PEDAL BECAME HARD AND WOULD NOT GO DOWN AND I HAD TO JAM ON THE BRAKE PEDAL AS HARD AS I COULD TO GET IT TO SLOW DOWN. HOWEVER, ONCE THE CAR ENGINE HAD BEEN ON FOR A WHILE, I WOULD HEAR A CLICK NOISE (PROBABLY THE CHECK VALVE UNSTICKING) AND THEN POWER BRAKES WERE RESTORED FOR THE REST OF THE COMMUTE. I EVENTUALLY HAD THE BRAKE BOOSTER VACUUM HOSE REPLACED (WHICH ALSO CONTAINED THE CHECK VALVE) AND NO LONGER HAD THIS ISSUE. THE MECHANIC WHO REPLACED THE HOSE CONFIRMED THAT THE CHECK VALVE WAS FAULTY BECAUSE THE OLD HOSE WOULD NOT ALLOW AIR THROUGH WHEN THEY TRIED TO BLOW THROUGH IT FROM EITHER DIRECTION.
I DID NOT FINANCE MY 2005 HONDA; I PAID CASH UPFRONT $18,000+. FROM THE BEGINNING I HAVE BEEN REPORTING TO HONDA THAT THERE IS A "MAJOR" PROBLEM WITH THE BRAKES! I BOUGHT THE CAR IN LATE SEPTEMBER 2005;. WHEN WINTER CAME, I NOTICED THAT MY BRAKES WOULD STALL WHEN IT EXTREME WEATHER(SNOW, HEAVY RAIN, EXTREMELY COLD WEATHER)! DURING THESE POOR WEATHER CONDITIONS, WHEN I PRESS ON THE BRAKES, THE CAR WILL NOT STOP RIGHT AWAY. THERE IS A HEAVY PULSATING NOISE AND FEELING GOING ON, AND THE CAR WILL NOT STOP UNTIL I HAVE PRESSED DOWN ON THE BRAKES AS FAR AS I COULD AND THE CAR HAS CONTINUED MOVING FOR A DISTANCE. OVER THE YEARS, I HAVE REPORTED IT AND HAVE TAKEN IT BACK AND FORTH TO THE DEALERSHIP, AND HAVE BEEN TOLD EACH TIME THAT THEY CAN NOT FIND A PROBLEM! I FEEL AS THOUGH THEY DIDN'T TAKE RESPONSIBILITY BECAUSE I DID NOT FINANCE THE CAR.THERE HAVE BEEN TIMES WHEN I THOUGHT THAT I WAS GOING TO DIE, BECAUSE OF THIS CRITICAL BRAKE PROBLEM. TODAY IS MONDAY, JANUARY 11, 2016... THE WEATHER WAS EXTREMELY COLD THIS MORNING (MAYBE AROUND 32 DEGREES), AND THIS SITUATION WITH THESE HONDA MANUFACTURED BRAKES OCCURRED AGAIN. I WAS TERRIFIED WHEN MY I PRESSED DOWN ON THE BRAKES TO STOP FOR A WOMAN PUSHING A BABY CARRIAGE AT A SCHOOL CROSS-WALK! HONDA HAS AVOIDED TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS HIGHLY DANGEROUS PROBLEM FOR FAR TOO LONG, AND MANY PEOPLE HAVE PROBABLY DIED OR BECOME GREATLY INJURED TO PROBLEMS SUCH AS THIS WITH THEIR HONDA VEHICLES! FROM THIS REPORT I AM HOPING FOR AN IMMEDIATE RESPONSE AND ACTION TO THIS "HIGHLY CRITICAL" MATTER. TODAY, WAS THE FINAL STRAW! HAVE NOTED ON A FEW OCCASIONS THAT THE BRAKE BOOSTER IS NOT ACTIVATED WHEN A CAR HAS BEEN SITTING OVERNIGHT OR FOR EXTENDED DURATION OF TIME. WHAT TYPICALLY HAPPENS IS THAT I START THE VEHICLE AND SHIFT IT INTO GEAR AND PROCEED. HOWEVER, IF I HAVE TO BRAKE WITHIN 1-2 MINUTES OF STARTING THE CAR, THE BRAKE BOOSTER APPEARS TO NOT BE WORKING AND I AM LEFT USING MANUAL BRAKES ESSENTIALLY SINCE THE VACUUM BOOST IS NOT WORKING. ONCE THE CAR HAS BEEN RUNNING FOR A FEW MINUTES, THE BRAKE BOOSTER STARTS WORKING NORMALLY. BECAUSE OF THIS INTERMITTENT BEHAVIOR, I HAVE ALMOST CRASHED INTO THINGS WHILE BACKING UP OR DRIVING FORWARD SINCE THE POWER BRAKES WERE ESSENTIALLY NOT WORKING IN THOSE SCENARIOS. I HAVE CHECKED THE BRAKE BOOSTER SYSTEM AND EVERYTHING APPEARS TO BE NORMAL. BRAKE PEDAL DOES NOT SINK DURING NORMAL OPERATION, NOR DOES THERE APPEAR TO BE A LEAK IN THE BRAKE SYSTEM WHEN I PRIME/PUMP THE BRAKE WHILE THE CAR IS TURNED OFF. AFTER INVESTIGATING THE ISSUE, I HAVE FOUND A TEMPORARY SOLUTION IS TO START THE CAR AND PUMP THE BRAKES FIRST BEFORE GOING. THE BRAKES WILL LOSE THE VACUUM BOOST IN THE INITIAL 2-3 PUMPS AND THEN AFTER A FEW MORE PUMPS WILL GET THE NORMAL VACUUM ASSIST BACK. I HAVE GONE TO MY LOCAL HONDA DEALERSHIP AND ASKED THEM IF THERE ARE ANY TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETINS ASSOCIATED WITH THE ISSUE AND THEY HAVE TOLD ME THAT THERE ARE NONE. I KNOW THAT BECAUSE OF THE HONDA INTEGRATED MOTOR ASSIST IN THEIR HYBRID VEHICLES, THERE IS AN EXTRA VACUUM SWITCH MODULE THAT CONTROLS THE BRAKE BOOSTER SO THAT IT CAN TURN THE ENGINE BACK ON DURING IDLE-STOP TO RESTORE BRAKE BOOSTING. I SUSPECT THAT THERE IS AN ISSUE ASSOCIATED WITH THAT 3-WAY JOINT THAT IS CAUSING INITIAL LOSS OF VACUUM. ONLINE FORUMS HAVE INDICATED POTENTIAL PREMATURE FAILURE IN THE BRAKE VACUUM HOSES. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 HONDA ACCORD. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 20 MPH, THE BRAKE PEDAL FAILED TO RESPOND. THE FAILURE RECURRED ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE TECHNICIAN WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 130,000.
I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY GOING ABOUT 75 MPH. AND THE BRAKES RANDOMLY APPLIED THEM SELF CAUSING MY CAR TO GO FROM 75 TO 60 MPH ALMOST GETTING HIT FROM BEHIND. I HAVE CONTACTED HONDA THEY SAID "SCENE THEY CAN NOT GET THE CAR TO DO IT WHILE THEY TOOK IT FOR A TEST DRIVE THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO.' I HAVE DONE A TON OF RESEARCH ON HONDAS. FROM 2003 TO 2006 THEY HAVE HAD A LOT OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT BRAKE PROBLEMS AND RADIO PROBLEMS . THE RADIO IN MY CAR DOES NOT WORK RIGHT IN ORDER FOR IT TO WORK RIGHT THE WANT ME TO BUY A NEW AUDIO PART. ALL OF THIS ON MY BUDGET. I'VE OWNED MY 4-DR., 6-CYL. EX MODEL SINCE PURCHASING IT FROM A HONDA PARTS DEPT. EMPLOYEE IN JAN., 2007 WITH 24K MILES ON THE ENGINE. IT HAS PERFORMED GENERALLY VERY WELL UNTIL IT DEVELOPED A SAFETY-RELATED, BRAKE SYSTEM PROBLEM THAT HAS GOTTEN PROGRESSIVELY WORSE SINCE IT FIRST OCCURRED-- NAMELY, THAT THE BRAKE PEDAL HAS BECOME PROGRESSIVELY SOFT WHEN APPLIED, AND RECENTLY HAS TO BE APPLIED STRENUOUSLY ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR TO GET EVEN A MINIMAL STOPPING RESPONSE. WHEN THE PROBLEM FIRST OCCURRED, I BEGAN REGULARLY CHECKING THE BRAKE FLUID LEVEL IN MY MASTER CYLINDER. ONLY OCCASIONALLY DID THE CYLINDER REQUIRE SOME MINIMAL, ADDITIONAL BRAKE FLUID--AKIN TO A NORMAL MAINTENANCE AMOUNT. KEEPING MY FLUID TO A MAXIMUM-LEVEL HAS NOT RESOLVED THE PROBLEM. THIS PAST MARCH (2015), I REQUESTED MY WELL-RATED, INDEPENDENT MECHANIC TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM. HE FIRST IDENTIFIED THE SAME 3 EARLIER HONDA SERVICE BULLETINS THAT I HAD (GOING ALL THE WAY BACK TO 2007) THAT ADDRESSED THIS BRAKE PROBLEM, WHEREIN HONDA WAS MOSTLY IMPLICATING A FAULTY ABS (CONTROL) MODULE AS THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM (NOTE: I'VE NEVER RECEIVED A SAFETY RECALL SVC. BULLETIN FROM HONDA FOR THIS PROBLEM). MY MECHANIC ESTIMATED THAT REPLACING MY ABS MODULE WOULD COST OVER $2000, BUT THAT EVEN THEN THERE WOULD BE NO GUARANTEE THAT MY PROBLEM WOULD BE RESOLVED. SO, UNTIL I COULD DECIDE WHAT ACTION TO TAKE, I HAD HIM DO A FRONT BRAKE JOB TO "BUY" WHATEVER EXTRA STOPPING-POWER I COULD ... WHICH TURNED OUT TO BE MINIMAL-TO-NONE! NOT ONLY DOES MY PROBLEM REMAIN, BUT IT IS GETTING RAPIDLY WORSE ... TO THE POINT THAT I'M RELUCTANT MAKE LONG, HIGHWAY-SPEED TRIPS, AND AM DRIVING SUPER-DEFENSIVELY SO AS TO BE ABLE TO STOP THE CAR IN ANY KIND OF RISKY SITUATION. THE LADY IN FRONT OF US CAME TO A DEAD STOP. I WAS WATCHING THE SITUATION IN FRONT OF US AND BEGAN SLOWING DOWN AND BRAKING. I HIT THE BRAKE PEDAL AND THE CAR SLOWED DOWN, BUT DID NOT COME TO A STOP. I THEN APPLIED THE BRAKES AGAIN, PRESSING THE PEDAL TO THE FLOOR, THE CAR STILL DID NOT STOP UNTIL IT HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF US. ON SATURDAY AT 11:50 PM, I WAS CRUISING AT THE 169TH & MAPLE RD, OMAHA, NE PARKING LOT.. AT A FRONT PARKING JUNCTION, I MADE A RIGHT TURN AT ABOUT 2-3 MPH SPEED. I SLOWED AND BRAKED FOR A PEDESTRIAN WALKING ACROSS MY PATH. MY CAR STARTED REVVING AND ACCELERATING RAPIDLY. I IMMEDIATELY PRESSED THE BRAKE PEDALS HARDER. THE HARDER I PRESSED, THE HARDER THE ACCELERATION BECAME. I BECAME VERY CONCERNED AND SCARED THAT THE CAR MIGHT ACCELERATE SUDDENLY AND MAY CAUSE A TERRIBLE ACCIDENT. I QUICKLY MOVE THE GEAR HAND PEDAL SHIFTERS FOWARD TO (P)ARK. THE CAR JERKED FORWARD A BIT AND THEN STOOD STILL; HOWEVER, THE ENGINE STARTED REVVING WITH A LOUD DIN AND THEN BACK TO NORMAL.I STARTED TO SLOWLY MOVE THE GEAR BACK INTO (D)RIVE MODE. THE CAR BEHAVED NORMALLY AND I PARKED MY CAR IN A AVAILABLE PARKING SLOT. PRIOR TO THIS INCIDENT, I HAD A MINOR INCIDENT SIMILAR TO THIS. THIS WAS A ABOUT 2 WEEKS BACK. I WAS SLOWED AND STOPPED AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT TO MAKE A RIGHT TURN TO MAPLE. WHILE IN STOP MODE PRESSING THE BRAKE, THE CAR STARTED JERKING AND ACCELERATING FORWARD SLOWLY. I QUICKLY PRESSED THE BRAKE HARDER AND IT JERKED FORWARD AND STOPPED. AT THAT POINT, I JUST SHRUGGED IT OFF, THINKING THAT WAS UNUSUAL BUT WASN'T REALLY BAD TO TAKE ISSUE. ALL THIS HAPPENED WHEN I CHANGED MY ACCORD HYBRID BATTERY AND A HYBRID CONTROLLER OVER A MONTH BACK WHEN I HAD A HYBRID BATTERY AND THE CONTROLLER THAT NEEDED TO BE REPLACE ON ACCOUNT OF A SAFETY ISSUE WITH THE CAR. THE CAR FELT OK AFTER THE CHANGE. HOWEVER, I HAD THE CAR SINCE 2005 AND NEVER DID I ENCOUNTER A SUDDEN ACCELERATION ON THIS CAR, NOT ONCE UNTIL AFTER THE BATTERY AND CONTROLLER CHANGE. THIS IS AN OTHERWISE WONDERFUL CAR BUT HAS ENOUGH SIBLINGS ON THE ROAD TO PRESENT A CREDIBLE THREAT TO PUBLIC SAFETY. ADDITIONALLY, THE @$1900 I'VE SPENT SO FAR ON BRAKE SYSTEM HARDWARE DOES NOT INCLUDE REGULAR WEAR ITEMS (PADS, FLUID, MISC) WHICH ARE NORMAL REPLACEMENT COST ITEMS. I BELIEVE HONDA SHOULD RECALL THIS MODEL, INSPECT/REPLACE BRAKE COMPONENTS TO ENSURE PUBLIC SAFETY, AND REIMBURSE OWNERS WHO HAVE ALREADY DONE THE RIGHT THING IN REPLACING DEFECTIVE PARTS THAT SHOULD NOT HAVE EVER BEEN ON THE ROAD IN THE FIRST PLACE. *JS

I OWN A 2005 HONDA ACCORD HYBRID AND EVERY WINTER (MN) AT LEAST 6 -10 TIMES A YEAR THE BRAKES DO NOT WORK. THE POWER BRAKING SYSTEM SIMPLY DOESN'T WORK. A FATAL ACCIDENT OCCURRED WHILE DRIVING THIS VEHICLE. MY MOTHER, WHOM IS A PRECAUTIOUS DRIVER WAS DRIVING MY COUSIN TO SCHOOL AND WERE INVOLVED IN A FATAL CAR ACCIDENT. THE HONDA STRUCK A SCHOOL BUS RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE. I BELIEVE THE CAR LIKE ON MANY OTHER OCCASIONS ACCELERATED ON ITS OWN OR THE BRAKES FAILED. I FEEL DEVASTATED THAT I HAVE LOST MY MOTHER AND COUSIN BECAUSE OF THIS ACCIDENT, BUT FEEL THAT MY MOTHER WAS NOT AT FAULT. SHE WAS ALWAYS A SAFE DRIVER AND IN THIS CASE I BELIEVE THE VEHICLE WAS AT FAULT. *TR
I HAVE A 2005 HONDA ACCORD HYBRID. I WAS DRIVING MY VEHICLE AWAY FROM MY HOME AND HAD TROUBLE PRESSING ON THE BRAKE PEDAL. THE BRAKE PEDAL WOULD NOT DEPRESS AND I COULD NOT USE THE EMERGENCY BRAKE TO STOP EITHER. THE BRAKE WAS HARD AND SEEMED AS IF IT WAS FROZEN OR STUCK IN PLACE. WHEN I PULLED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE LEVER ALL IT DID WAS BEEP AND FLASH THAT I HAD PULLED IT, IT DID NOT SLOW ME DOWN OR STOP ME. I HAD GONE THROUGH 2 STOP SIGNS AT THIS POINT. I FINALLY WAS ABLE TO GET THE CAR INTO REVERSE SO THAT THE ENGINE WOULD REV AND THE BRAKE PEDAL WOULD FINALLY DEPRESS. THAT WAS THE ONLY THING THAT WOULD WORK. THE CAR DID NOT GO IN REVERSE BUT IT DID STOP ENOUGH FOR ME TO ACTUALLY USE THE BRAKE. I CALLED HONDA DIRECTLY AND BECAUSE NO COMPLAINTS WERE PREVIOUSLY ISSUED THEY COULD NOT HELP ME. MY LOCAL DEALERS WERE TOO BOOKED UP TO HANDLE THE ISSUE AS WELL. AFTER IT HAPPENING A TOTAL OF 4 TIMES I WAS FINALLY ABLE TO GET IN TOUCH WITH A MECHANIC WHO WILL BE CHECKING OUT THE VEHICLE. I AM VERY LUCKY THAT THIS DID NOT END UP IN A CRASH OR FATALITY. I HAD MY 3 YEAR OLD SON IN THE CAR AND I AM PREGNANT WITH OUR SECOND CHILD. SYSTEMS SHOULD BE IN PLACE TO HELP PEOPLE OUT IN SITUATIONS LIKE THIS AND THERE WERE NOT. FOR THIS REASON I WOULD NEVER BUY A HYBRID NOR A HONDA AGAIN. IM HOPING THE MECHANIC I FOUND CAN FIX THE PROBLEM OR ATLEAST FIGURE OUT WHAT IT IS BEFORE MYSELF OR SOMEONE ELSE GETS HURT WHEN MY BRAKE PEDAL DECIDES TO FAIL AGAIN. I HAVE TRIED LETTING MY CAR WARM UP BEFORE LEAVING MY HOME TO ENSURE THAT MAY HELP AND IT DOES NOT. IT ACTUALLY MADE IT WORSE AND INSTEAD OF IT ONLY HAPPENING ONCE ON THAT TRIP, IT HAPPENED TWICE. WHEN THE PEDAL IS STUCK I CANNOT STOP, I CAN SLOW DOWN BUT NOT ENOUGH TO STOP. SOMETHING REALLY SHOULD BE DONE ABOUT THIS BEFORE IT HAPPENS TO ANYONE ELSE. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 HONDA ACCORD. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS SPEED WITH THE BRAKE PEDAL ENGAGED THE VEHICLE JERKED VIOLENTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE ROTORS AND BRAKE PADS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE REMEDY FAILED TO REPAIR THE PROBLEM. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 65,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 77,000.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHO STATED THAT THE FRONT AND REAR ROTORS AND RIGHT REAR CALIPERS WERE COVERED WITH RUST AND COULD NOT BE ROTATED. THE ENTIRE BRAKE SYSTEM HAD TO BE REPLACED. THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER AND RECEIVED A CASE NUMBER BUT WAS OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 39,700. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 39,640. UPDATED 10/20/10 *BF THE CONSUMER STATED THE ROTORS COULD NOT BE TURNED. ALL FOUR ROTORS HAD TO BE REPLACED INCLUDING THE CALIPERS. UPDATED 10/21/10
I BROUGHT THE CAR IN APRIL WHILE DRIVING HOME FROM THE DEALER I NOTICED THAT WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKE (SLOWLY) BEFORE COMING INTO A COMPLETE STOP THE BRAKE PEDAL WOULD LOCK UP, RELEASE AND THEN COME TO A COMPLETE STOP SLOW ACCELERATION I WASN'T ABLE TO PICK UP SPEED ONCE IT DID THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WOULD COME ON CODE P0122 THROTTLE PEDAL POSITION SENSOR. *TR
