The contact owns a 2007 Honda Accord. The contact stated that after shifting into drive(D) with the brake pedal depressed to the floorboard, the vehicle suddenly accelerated and crashed into nearby vehicles and structures. The contact was able to use the parking brake to stop the vehicle. The contact stated that she had smelled gasoline inside the cabin of the vehicle prior to the failure; however, the contact was informed that the odor was related to a faulty gas cap. No air bags had deployed. No warning lights were illuminated. A Police report was not filed. There were no injuries sustained. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 19E068000 (Vehicle Speed Control) however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 240,000.
I was driving at a high rate if speed on the interstate and the car did not even give a warning before just would not go. It was like the car was not acknowledging the gas pettle. I could have died. It is a very dangerous problem. A friend of mine died from her Honda.
Engine acceleration while braking. After a short 15 min trip I returned home and entered driveway which is sloped down hill. Depressed brake and engine RPM went from about 1000 to over 3000 RPM. Released brake for a sec and tapped accelerator. RPM went back down and brakes returned to normal. I thought that loose carpet on mat may have interfered with accelerator and I removed it. About 5 hr later I was travelling for about 20 min on 55 mph highway and approached a red light. I depressed brake and slowed down to 5-10 mph. Engine rpm again went up to 3000-4000 RPM, I put automatic transmission in neutral tapped accelerator and RPM returned to idle 800. This again occurred for 5 more times before I returned home. When I pulled into my drive way I slowly reached the end and put the car in park, set the emergency brake, and let it idle for about 30 sec. I then depressed the brake a little and the RPM increased from 800 to just over 1000. I then depressed the brake harder and the RPM shot up to about 4000. At no time was the accelerator depressed or moved. I shut off the ignition and attempted to duplicate the error but could not. I also checked all the vacuum lines from the brake booster for leaks. There were no warning lights and a scan did not indicate any trouble codes. I have not brought it to a dealer as I am seeing if I can reproduce and troubleshoot the problem. I am an engineer and have done all my auto service and repairs for close to 50 years. This includes rebuilding engines, transmissions (manual/auto), and electrical troubleshooting. I can assure you this is not due to floor mat interference or incorrect application of pedals.
THIS OCCURRED WHILE THE CAR WAS STILL IN MOTION. WHEN I TRY TO PRESS THE BRAKES TO SLOW DOWN, THE CAR CONTINUES TO ACCELERATE WHILE MAKING A LOUD REVVING SOUND. THIS OCCURS ABOUT TWICE WHILE I AM DRIVING. IT IS AS IF THE CAR DOES NOT WANT TO SLOW DOWN AT TIMES.
WHILE PARKING MY 2007 HONDA ACCORD IN A RESIDENTIAL AREA, I PUT IT INTO REVERSE WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE. THE CAR SUDDENLY ACCELERATED ON ITS OWN, AND THE BRAKES FAILED, CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO CRASH INTO A PARKED CAR WITH ENOUGH FORCE TO MOVE IT ABOUT 3 FEET, PUSHING IT UP OVER THE CURB AND ONTO THE SIDEWALK. A SECOND PARKED VEHICLE WAS ALSO DAMAGED. WITH MY FOOT STILL ON THE BRAKE, I SHIFTED INTO DRIVE, AND THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED FORWARD AT AN ALARMING RATE OF SPEED FOR ABOUT ONE/TENTH MILE, WHERE I WAS FINALLY ABLE TO GET THE CAR TO STOP. THE REAR DAMAGE ON MY CAR WAS SO EXTENSIVE THAT THE CAR WAS DEEMED A TOTAL LOSS BY MY INSURANCE COMPANY. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. MILEAGE ON THE VEHICLE WAS APPROXIMATELY 33,300 MILES. UNEXPECTED ACCELERATION WITH ENGINE STUCK AT FULL THROTTLE.. CONDITIONS AT THE TIME: SNOW ON ROAD; LARGE SNOW BANKS AT SIDES OF ROAD.. I HAD BACKED OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY IN ORDER TO TURN MY CAR AROUND SO AS TO POINT FRONT-OUT.I THEN STARTED TO BACK DOWN THE DRIVEWAY.THE CAR GOT STUCK AGAINST A PILE OF SNOW PART WAY INTO THE DRIVEWAY (WE JUST HAD A SERIES OF LARGE SNOWSTORMS, BUT THE NIGHT WAS CLEAR).I PLACED THE TRANSMISSION IN "'DRIVE"' AND ATTEMPTED TO EXIT THE DRIVEWAY.A WHEEL STATED TO SPIN (I BELIEVE IT WAS THE RIGHT FRONT DRIVEWHEEL), SO I GUNNED THE ENGINE.THE CAR GOT FREE, HEADING TOWARD THE SNOW BANK ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD OPPOSITE THE DRIVEWAY.I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE GAS AND ONTO THE BRAKE, APPLYING FORCE ON THE BRAKE.THE ENGINE REMAINED IN FULL THROTTLE DESPITE MY HAVING MOVED MY FOOT OFF THE GAS AND ONTO THE BRAKE AND MY APPLYING FORCE TO THE BRAKE..THE CAR HAD PROPELLED ITSELF INTO THE SNOW BANK ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE ROAD.THE ENGINE REMAINED IN FULL THROTTLE. I COULD FEEL THE PULSATION OF THE ABS SYSTEM ON THE BRAKE PEDAL UNDER MY FOOT AS I CONTINUED TO TRY TO BRAKE.I FINALLY TURNED OFF THE IGNITION. THE ENGINE STOPPED. I PLACED THE TRANSMISSION INTO "PARK".I THEN TURNED THE IGNITION BACK ON AND STARTED THE ENGINE WITH MY FOOT STILL ON THE BRAKE, AND IMMEDIATELY THE ENGINE WAS AGAIN IN FULL THROTTLE, ALTHOUGH IN "PARK"' -- SO THERE WAS NO MOVEMENT OF THE VEHICLE.I TURNED OFF THE IGNITION AGAIN.I TURNED THE IGNITION BACK ON. MY SON WAS DRIVING MY 2007 HONDA ACCORD. IT WAS APPROXIMATELY 5:00 PM. THE WEATHER WAS CLEAR AND DRY. HE WAS PARKED IN A RESIDENTIAL DRIVEWAY. AFTER STARTING THE CAR NORMALLY, HE PROCEEDED TO PUT THE CAR IN REVERSE AND LIGHTLY PRESSED THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL TO EXIT THE DRIVEWAY. THE CAR BEGAN TO RAPIDLY AND UNCONTROLLABLY ACCELERATE IN REVERSE. HE THEN DEPRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL ATTEMPTING TO STOP THE CAR. HOWEVER, THE BRAKE PEDAL HAD NO EFFECT AND THE CAR CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE THROUGH A 4X4 WOODEN MAILBOX POST AND UPHILL ON THE DRIVEWAY ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE STREET. HE CONTINUED TO DEPRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL, HOWEVER ACCELERATION CONTINUED UNIMPEDED. THE CAR FINALLY CAME TO A STOP AFTER CRASHING REAR-ENDED INTO A HOUSE ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE STREET. ON 4 SEPARATE OCCASIONS I'VE BEEN DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS AND BEFORE ENTERING THE HIGHWAY( AT 25-35 MPH) AND HAVE FELT A LURCH FORWARD MOVEMENT FROM THE VEHICLE ALMOST LIKE A ROUGH SHIFT FROM TRANSMISSION(VEH IS AUTOMATIC)--ITS HAPPENED WHEN I'VE WARMED THE CAR UP FOR LESS THAN MY CUSTOMARY 10 MINUTES . I'VE FELT IT SEVERAL TIMES(4-5) WHILE DRIVING A DISTANCE OF 25 MILES)ON EACH TRIP. I WENT TO THE DEALER/BALANCE TIRES/COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING/TOLD TO BRING BACK WHEN IT HAPPENS/IT HAPPENED AGAIN WHEN IT WAS SNOWING (AND THE OTHER TIMES I'VE NOTICED IT. IT WAS ALSO SNOWING AND THE CAR HADN'T BEEN WARMED UP 10 MINUTES) THE LURCH IS VERY NOTICEABLE WHEN DRIVING ALMOST MAKING YOU FEEL LIKE THE VEHICLE WILL "CONK OUT"--WHICH IS SCARY TO SAY THE LEAST WHEN DRIVING ON A INTERSTATE. *TR
