I have a 2006 Honda Civic GX compressed natural gas vehicle. The problem with the vehicle is the compressed natural gas cylinder that holds the fuel. The cylinders are only certified for a period of time 15 or 20 years. After that the cylinders are considered expired and must be replaced. Once they are expired, they cannot be recertified. The problem I encountered is a complete lack of knowledge of proper maintenance procedures even by Honda dealers that are certified to work on natural gas vehicles (NGV). See Honda Service Bulletin 06-015 1998-2015 Civic GX All and US Dept of Energy, Alternative Fuels Data Center - CNG Fuel System and Tank Maintenance. From the time I bought the vehicle in 2006 until 2024 I regularly took it to a certified Honda NGV service dealer. At no time did they perform any required NGV safety checks. My issue is that there may be many of these vehicles on the roads still that pose a real safety risk to the owner and public if the NGV fuel systems have not been properly maintained. I brought this safety issue up to the Honda dealer and Honda Motor Company and both declined to take any measures to alert current NGV owners or Honda certified NGV service dealers. If expired cylinders are still in service, they are at risk of exploding and causing significant damage and injury.
My fuel tank all of a sudden started leaking. It all started as a gradual issue. Very random and unusual. I always get this car serviced. Honda denies any part of the defect and was informed car does not qualify any warranty at 93k miles. Tank had cracked and this is unusual for a lightly driven car. First signs were gas fumes all over the garage. Consumer had a local shop check the car there were no leaks. Consumer had 0.5 of the tank filled.
GAS TANK STRAPS RUSTED AND THE FUEL TANK FELL ONTO THE GROUND WEARING A HOLE AND EXPELLED ITS FUEL CONTENT.
FUEL PUMPS ARE LEAKING FROM THE TOP OF PUMP HOUSING AND ARE FILLING UP THE CUBBY HOLE THAT THEY SIT IN, WITH GAS. THIS PUMP HAS A ACCESS HOLE UNDER THE REAR SEAT AND FUMES CAN BE SMELLED INSIDE AND OUTSIDE OF THE CARS, WITH SOME LEAKING ON THE GROUND. IT ALSO IS KNOW TO BE ON SOME ODYSSEY AS WELL. IF PARKED IN THE GARAGE OVERNIGHT THE FUMES COULD FILL THE AREA AND BE IGNITED BY A WATER HEATER OR SOME OTHER SOURCE. I HAVE REPLACED MANY OF THESE PUMPS OVER THE YEARS AND HONDA DEALERS ARE DOING THE SAME WITH NO CONCERN THAT THEY ARE A DEFECT AND COULD CAUSE A POTENTIAL SAFETY RISK. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 HONDA CIVIC. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THERE WAS A STRONG GASOLINE FUEL ODOR. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE CONTACT REFERENCED NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 07V512000 (FUEL SYSTEM, OTHER:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY) THAT COULD HAVE BEEN RELATED TO THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND ADVISED THAT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 103,000.
BOUGHT CAR IN MAY 2006, BY AUG 2006 I WAS ONLY GETTING 36 MILES PER GALLON. BROUGHT CAR TO DEALER. THEY SAID THEY REPLACED A PART TO FIX PROBLEM. PROBLEM NOT FIXED! BROUGHT CAR BACK 3 MORE TIMES AND DEALER SAID I WAS DRIVING THE CAR WRONG. I TOLD THEM TO KEEP THE CAR FOR A WEEK, THEY DID BUT STILL COULD NOT GET THE MILEAGE OVER 37 MPG. THEY TOLD US THEY DIDN'T KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS AND THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO ABOUT IT. WENT THROUGH 3 BACK TIRES ON DRIVERS SIDE. THEY STILL WOULDN'T DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT! I HAD TO PAY FOR IT! THE CAR WAS GETTING WORSE AND WORSE. FINALLY WE TOOK IT TO ANOTHER DEALER. THEY FOUND THAT SOMETHING WAS BROKEN BY THE BACK TIRE (WHICH IS WHY I HAD TO KEEP REPLACING THEM) AND I NEEDED A NEW TRANSMISSION. ALL OF THAT WAS COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. THAT WAS IN SEPTEMBER 2010. THEY ALSO TOLD ME THAT'S WHY I NEVER GOT THE MILEAGE I WAS SUPPOSED TO GET. THAT WAS WHEN THEY TOLD ME THAT I NEEDED TO GET THE SOFTWARE UPDATE!! NOW MY CAR IS NOT DRIVABLE! THE BATTERY DOESN'T CHARGE, THE CAR CANT ACCELERATE! THE SERVICE MANAGER AND THE FOREMAN TOLD HONDA AMERICA THAT THE CAR IS NOT SAFE AND HONDA AMERICA DOESN'T CARE! I FILED A CLAIM AND I WAS TOLD THAT THERE IS NO PROBLEM WITH THE CAR. I JUST NEED TO GET USED TO DRIVING IT DIFFERENTLY! WHEN I PRESSED THEM AND TOLD THEM MY CAR IS NOW UNDRIVABLE, I WAS TOLD THAT THEY HAD NOTHING ELSE TO SAY TO ME! HONDA REALLY MESSED THIS ONE UP! PEOPLE ARE GOING TO GET KILLED DRIVING THESE CARS....AND THEY KNOW IT! MY CAR WAS A LEMON SINCE THE DAY I BOUGHT IT! PAID $5,000.00 EXTRA FOR IT , NEVER GOT THE MPG, AND NOW I CANT DRIVE IT! *TR
HONDA HAS PERFORMED A SOFTWARE UPDATE ON MY 2006 CIVIC HYBRID. THE RESULTS ARE TANTAMOUNT TO HAVING REPLACED MY CAR WITH ANOTHER THAT HAS MARKEDLY INFERIOR RESPONSE, PERFORMANCE, AND GAS MILEAGE: * ABOUT 10 MPG DECREASE SINCE THE 8/4/2010 IMA SOFTWARE UPDATE * RARE IVA ASSIST ON STARTING FROM 0, RESULTING IN A NOTICEABLE LAG BETWEEN DEPRESSING THE GAS PEDAL AND MOVEMENT FROM A STOPPED POSITION - THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE. * RESPONSIVENESS OF ACCELERATION AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS INCONSISTENT AND UNPREDICTABLE - SINCE THIS AFFECTS DRIVER REACTION AND RESPONSIVENESS THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE NOTE: THE SOFTWARE UPDATE RENDERS THE ELECTRIC MOTOR PRACTICALLY MOOT. SINCE IN MY CASE THE BATTERY DROPS ITS CHARGE RADICALLY OVER A 24 HOUR PERIOD IF NOT USED, THE UPDATE APPEARS TO BE DOING LITTLE MORE THAN PREVENTING AN ALREADY COMPROMISED BATTERY FROM FAILING. *TR

2006 HONDA CIVIC HAS ISSUES WITH THE GAS MILEAGE, ROAD NOISE, BROKEN GLOVE COMPARTMENT AND VIBRATING LEFT SIDE MIRROR. *NJ THE CONSUMER STATED THE VEHICLE RECEIVED 28-30 MPG GAS CONSUMPTION ON THE HIGHWAY. *JB
