NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2017 Honda Civic. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
AC leaking Freon inside cabin. Honda is aware that 2016-2019 Honda civics have a bad A/C systems. Other crucial A/C components, such as the condenser and compressor, are covered by an extended 10-year warranty. However, the evaporator, is not. AC unit leaking Freon right into the drivers face. . Making it extremely dangerous and hazardous to operate the vehicle Many articles about this please help? Honda USA is not helping fix and wants to do outrageous changes to get it fix. It is unfair for Honda to leave the most expensive and labor intensive part of this repair to the customer. My deal quoted me $2672 for this repair.
The drivers seat is loose and wobbles. I first noticed last Monday [XXX]. I keep my car clean & always do routine maintenance. This is a concern incase I get hit seat is already loose. I did research and see it’s an issue for some. There are forums online. It does the same thing wobbles, something is loose near center console under the seat. I took it to the dealer they said my frame broke and it will be 1,200+ to fix… [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
There is paint just falling off the drive door in large chucks, and still getting worse.
I’m having a problem with my steering . It’s like it’s sticky and jerky feeling when driving, causing me to have to overcorrect left or right when making slight adjustments to center. Obviously more noticeable with highway driving. Took to Honda they diagnosed it as VSA Module, got it fixed still having the same issue with sticky steering. I don’t feel safe driving my car
About a week ago my car began going into accessory mode on its own leaving my interior and exterior lights, my dash board lights and my head unit on until i noticed so my car couldve been dead if i wouldnt have seen. also since the car is locked and it goes into accessory mode on its own the alarm starts going off due to the security system thinking its being broken into. ive done my research trying to figure out what the issue is and ive found a huge amount of other people are also dealing with this issue. during my research i found that the cause for the car going into accessory mode and the alarms going off is the body control module. so many people are saying they filed complaints and tried to get a hold of honda to try and get a recall started but nothing has come of it and im hoping that you guys can change that. i looked into the body control module and you cant even get the part right now due to very high demand and the part being on back order indefinitely due to so many people dealing with this issue. i hope something can come of this thank you.
The contact owns a 2017 Honda Civic. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the air condition was blowing hot air. The contact stated that the vehicle was serviced under an unknown recall; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer again, and it was diagnosed that the air condition compressor needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired because the contact was informed that the repair would be out-of- pocket. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.
2017 CIVIC AC INSPECTION FOUND THAT THE AC EVAPORATOR ASSEMBLY FAILED AND THE CAR ONLY 36,000 MILES ONLY, NO WARRANTY BY HONDA AND THE AC HAS FAILED 4 TIMES AFTER THE RECALL FOR AC CONDENSER. NEED HELP TO MAKE HONDA HELD LIABILITY FOR FAIL AC COMPONENTS SINCE IT HAS BEEN TOO MANY FAILURE WITH THEIR CAR'S AC SYSTEM
My vehicles Body Control Module has malfunctioned and now I have to get a new one. When driving my car will begin to flash all of the warning lights including the power steering, break system, TMPS system and the immobilizer light. This is distracting while driving and it makes me feel like I am going to crash and I could injure myself or others on the road when these lights are distracting and I am not in a safe place to pull over. Honda Marysville has inspected the vehicle and has confirmed that the Body Control Module has failed. A bunch of alerts began to pop up and I was unsure of which ones to fix. I checked all my tires and they were within normal range so I was confused why my car was showing me the warning light. There were no other warnings that were shown. My car alarm would go off and the lights on the dash would flash when I turned my car off.
BCM module in the 2017 Civics seem to have constant Parasitic Battery Drain issues that are not being addressed by Honda. My battery died and was replaced, drain continue on a daily basis. Was able to trace to BCM module. checked online to find numerous other people having the same exact issue.
The air conditioning stopped working for the second time. So far the compressor bearing has been replaced as well as the condenser.
The contact owns a 2017 Honda Civic. The contact stated while driving at slow speeds through a parking area, the vehicle inadvertently lost motive power, after which the vehicle failed to restart. The contact stated that the warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and diagnosed with fuel pump failure. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V858000 (Fuel System, Gasoline) but the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 95,000.
AC compressor is not working causing the defroster not to work and front wind shield will not defrost during wet /humid weather. Honda's extended warranty bulletin only applies to the condenser not the compressor
This car has an air conditioning issue. Last year the air conditioning stopped working. took it to the honda dealership and they found an issue with the condenser and seals. they fixed it free of charge due to the extended warranty honda put out. not even a full year later the air conditioning stopped working again. took it back to the honda dealership and turns out it's the evaporator. it's not covered by the extended warranty. they quoted me $3,000 to repair it. honda knows the a/c parts are bad. they dont want to cover it.
This vehicle has a defect in the steering rack, specifically the gearbox. Symptoms include sticky or glitchy steering movements of the steering wheel. This cases jerky adjustments in steering the car. Honda has known about this issue with 10th generation civics but has only addressed models 2022-2025 with a recalls. This car is an effort to drive at highway speeds.
Body control module/ECU had to be reset at dealership and possible replacement in near future. Glitch occurred and cut power to hazards, turn signals, lights, door locks, etc. during operation of vehicle.
I was driving on the freeway traveling about or higher than 65 mph with high wind resistance (my opinion) when the front lower bumper shield started dragging under the vehicle causing to pull over in high traffic with my kids. Upon my own investigation the front lower bumper seem to rip and fold down ward causing it to drag.
The seatbelt in our Civic became entangled around our child and locked. The more we tried to get her out, the tighter it became. It was so tight around her waist that it left marks. She unbuckled the seatbelt and let a little more back into the retractor, hoping it would unlock but it only got tighter. We were on vacation and had to find a hardware store to buy a socket set to disconnect the seatbelt from the frame of the car, so at this point has to drive on I-70 with a kid tangled in an unbuckled seatbelt. Once we purchased a socket set, there was plastic obstructing access to the bolt, so we had to then purchase a knife to cut away the plastic to access the bolt. All the while, our kid was tangled up tightly in the seatbelt, squeezing her abdomen. There needs to be an emergency seatbelt lock release button. Had this became tangled around her neck, she could have been seriously hurt or killed.
Sticky steering. Steering wheel sticks in one spot causing you to over correct.
The steering on my vehicle has spots where it sticks and I have to use more force to continue. I took it to my local dealer and was told the rack and pinion assembly needed to be replaced. I was also told the part I needed was out of stock and they did not know when it would be back in stock. They said they would order the part when it became available and I have heard nothing from them. My car has 41,000 miles on it. I researched and found a recall on this issue but was told it did not apply to my car. I contacted Honda and was told they would not cover it due to the year on my car even with the low mileage. The car is not safe to drive. The longer you drive it the more it sticks .
The steering wheel is sticky. While making directional corrections while driving, especially at highway speeds, the stickiness of the steering wheel causes you to make jercky movements causing you to over correct your cars path, which causes you to make another correction oversteering in the opposite direction. This process continues indefinitely as you drive.
The A/c evaporator needs to be replaced. It leaks refrigerant.
Vehicle steering wheel will feel stiff and jerky when travellings at cruise speeds. Tendency to overcompensate corrections. Serious safety threat.
There is no cold air blowing from my AC
Steering wheel sticks while driving typically notice it driving on interstate so likely only when at higher speeds. Becomes difficult to maintain vehicle in straight line. There is recall on other civics for similar issue but none on my VIN. Bit of a safety concern having the vehicle difficult to steer
When driving the car at highway speeds for a number of miles, the steering gets sticky making it hard to maintain lane control. When trying to make minor corrections, the steering wheel will not turn until significant force is used which causes the car to jerk sideways in the lane. This results in having to turn the wheel again to correct again resulting in fighting the steering through the whole drive. The issue is not apparent on short drives or when diving around town making frequent turns. It is only apparent when driving for many miles on the highway. Once it starts, the problem continues until the car is parked for an extended period, such as overnight.
When traveling at highway speeds the steering “sticks”. This requires more force to keep the car going straight in the lane. When correcting the steering overcorrection is a hazard. Very unsafe travel at highway speeds.
We are experiencing a technical issue with the vehicle, which appears to be caused by a software or component error, rather than user error. This situation has led to the car starting unexpectedly and presenting challenges that could compromise safety while driving. Unfortunately, there has yet to be a recall or resolution communicated by the authorities.
I have been having ongoing steering problems resulting in having to correct my steering when on the interstate. It has been stated as "sticky steering". My 2017 is having the same issue and it is a huge safety issue to myself and others on thr e road. I'm documenting this complaint as if something happens, I will have this for my documents .
In the middle of last year, at 44K miles, I noticed my steering was "twitchy". It feels like a magnet is sticking and results in constant steering inputs. This issue has gotten worse overtime and I took it to the dealer in September. They said there was a recall for steering malfunction on several Honda vehicles, but not mine. Reading information online, there are lots of complaints and concerns for multiple years and Honda models that EXACTLY match what I am experiencing. Why are some VIN's begin recalled but mine when I have the same symptoms??? This issue is dangerous at highway at speed. I just drove 500 miles this weekend and had to constantly move the wheel left/right, left/right to maintain my lane. It's exhausting, the steering feels heavy, twitchy and does not hold a straight line. Sometimes you can feel it twitch sitting at a stop light. My car is in MINT condition, garage kept, perfectly maintained and never abused. This is not a wear item. A steering rack should not be replaced at such low mileage. But most importantly, it is dangerous at highway speed and requires EXTREME FOCUS to keep the car in the lane. I will not let my two boys drive this car. I hope this is addressed by NHTSA to prevent injuries or death.
"sticky steering" issue. The issue is momentary increase in steering effort, mostly at highway speeds causing over steering jeopardizing safety. Honda refuses to acknowledge this issue although honda has issued a recall notice for same issue , same year same model. Honda stating that my specific VIN number is not one that has been recalled although car has same issue that it's being recalled for. Repair costing about $3500 per Honda service.
I am noticing intermittent issues with ADAS with all the following errors pop up at once. The issue comes on randomly and goes back to normal randomly. * Adaptive Cruise Control problem * Collision Mitigation Braking System Problem * Lane Keep Assist Problem * Road Departure Mitigation System Problem * Braking System Error Has not been confirmed by an independent service/dealer/insurance/police. No other warning messages before this.
Paint on roof is peeling off near rear window.
While driving straight there is slippage in the steering that causes the driver to over compensate. Steering feels loose. I think I need to trade this vehicle in before something bad happens. Honda has very poor customer service. The dealerships are aweful and theives.
While driving the steering is “sticking” and feels like there is tension while driving on a straight road and trying to keep the the vehicle straight. The tension in the steering wheel is overcome while trying to keep it straight causing the vehicle to jerk in that direction. You must react in the opposite direction to avoid collision which causes it to jerk in the other direction. It happens at all speeds and most noticeably at 40+ mph making it very concerning to drive and difficult to control the vehicle. My concern is that the vehicle will lose control completely at some point due to this issue.
The steering is sticking and slipping when coming out of a turn. This usually occurs at speeds over 45 mph. When you start to come out of a turn, it’s as if the wheel is momentarily stuck in the turn and then slips 2 to 3 degrees. If feels like the wheel is not responding, and it’s quite frightening not knowing if the car is going to respond to the wheel. It’s hard for the technicians to duplicate, because it does not happen every time (at least for now). This is a huge safety issue that Honda needs to repair. The part was quoted at $2000, and because there are so many vehicles affected, it is on “unknown amount of time” back order. Please NHTSA do something about this.
Steering is “sticking” or momentarily locking. Going straight then initiating a turn, the steering sticks momentarily until it finally “breaks loose”. Results in over-controlling and having to do almost S-turns while trying to keep the car straight. More apt to do so at higher speeds and the traveling faster does exacerbate the over-controlling (over-steering) conditions.
Rear left parking brake actuator warning light
The power steering “sticks” and “requires slight, but manual force” to free it while driving causing the car to unexpectedly lose maneuverability. It has not been inspected yet, but it is easy to confirm as it happens almost all the time.
Sudden loss of acceleration. CVT Transmission failure. Vehicle has been single owner and properly maintained, only 72K miles on it. There have been no issues with the transmission up to this incident. Pulling out of a parking lot the car revved and seemed like it wasn't going into gear. Car came to a complete stop in the middle of the road and could not move in any gear. We had it towed to the garage and they confirmed that the transmission oil was completely burnt and that the transmission needed replaced, which they agreed was completely premature.
Steering is sticky and jerky. Requires additional input to make minor corrections at highway speeds. Causes vehicle to swerve when it frees up.
car alarm going off for an extended period of time caused a short at the battery and caused a fire that destroyed the vehicle.
My Honda recently has had 10 warning lights pop up went in for oil change they couldn’t tell me the issue came back for another diagnosis and they are saying the engine has oil dilution. This is a known issue for this engine. But why does it affect abs, traction control, wiper sensor, auto high beam detection. , all of the lane assist , cruise control, early warning crash detection? This can be dangerous when you can’t quickly get the car into a dealership. And if it’s know issue they need a recall or free fix.
Steering wheel "sticks." I has been doing it since around 40,000 miles. It has gotten worse with time. While driving in straight line after it warms up the steering wheel does not move when trying to make micro adjustments and then when it does it jerks and causes the driver to overcompensate. Makes driving very tiring and unsafe. It is difficult to keep the car driving straight when tis happens. I can see there have been recalls regarding this problem with newer Civics, like 22-23, but mine has been doing it and it is a 2017. Last time it happened was recently while my drive was driving and I was out of town on 3/15/24.
The paint is peeling around the back window. Down to the primer/metal. I first noticed it around 3/15/2022. It first started to bubble. Now it's flaking off. The color of the vehicle is Modern Steel Metallic.
Ac evaporator has failed not allowing windshield to defrost and defog properly. It is know issue at this time ac compressor and condenser are covered under extended warranty but not the ac evaporator.
Everything is good
I am experiencing sticky steering wheel. This is a known issue in Honda vehicles. It causes over correcting to right or left at all speeds, but more prominent during highway driving. Many vehicles have been recalled but for some reason my VIn isn’t listed but clearly has a defect in the steering.
POWER STEERING (EPS) HAS OCCASIONAL STICKING ESPECIALLY AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. ONE HONDA DEALER CONFIRMED BUT NO SERVICE DOCUMENTATION COMPLETED AS VIN NOT ON MANUFACTURER RECALL. HONDA HAS SHOWN ZERO INTEREST NOR CONCERN OF VEHICLES NOT COVERED UNDER A RECALL OR TSB OF STEERING RACK ISSUES. HONDA DEALERS PREFER NOT TO BE BOTHERED BY CUSTOMERS WHO SHOW CONCERN FOR A POTENTIAL SAFETY ISSUE ON STEERING RACK ISSUES, YES, EVEN IN MY CASE EITHER REFUSING TO INSPECT VEHICLE OUTRIGHT OR REFUSING TO DOCUMENT IF A PROBLEM IS FOUND. ADD THIS, BECAUSE VIN IS NOT ON LIST OF AFFECTED VEHICLES, DEALERS LEAVE IT UP TO AMERICAN HONDA TO HANDLE, WHICH THEY DO NOT. I HAVE BEEN TOLD NOT TO BRING MY VEHICLE BACK AS DEALERS WILL REFUSE TO ACCEPT IT IN THEIR SERVICE DEPT.
Steering wheel has become very "sticky". Minor steering adjustments are now very hard to make, causing a jerking motion of the wheel while just trying to maintain a straight lane. These kinds of motions can cause safety concerns for those driving the car as well as others on the road as jerky movements can result in crash. I have found several other accounts of this same issue with a very simple internet search. Seems like something Honda needs to fix.
I have 2017 Honda Civic. March 2023 the electronic power steering was faulty, and the dealership replaced it under warranty. February of 2024, the replacement EPS rack showed signs of sticking and jerking the same manner the original EPS did. Throughout the last year, the steering sticks when driving in curves. Same local dealership that did the first replacement while it was under warranty, now cannot find anything wrong when they drive it and put it on the diagnostic machine. In freezing temperatures of 32 degrees and below, the steering doesn't stick, but temperatures above 45 degrees, the steering sticks every time in a curve. There is something wrong with these EPS racks and I believe when they replaced the original rack, they replaced it with another faulty rack and I am having the same problems and I drive in fear daily and no one is listening to us. I've read the other same exact complaints on this website regarding this issue and most of them are within the last several months. I need someone to help me before the steering rack causes me to crash.
